Standing stock and size composition of the zooplankton comunity (>100 m) were studied in four depth strata of the upper 200 m of the water column during a Meteor cruise to the central Red Sea and Gulf of Aden in spring 1987. The central Red Sea was divided into a northern area of higher salinity and a less saline southern part. Both areas exhibited significant differences in zooplankton abundance and standing stock. The latter increased by the ratio 1:2:3 from the northern central Red Sea to its southern part and further south to the Gulf of Aden. For size structure analysis samples were fractionated into three size classes (100 to 300, 300 to 500, 500 to 5000 m). In the central Red Sea the smallest size was dominant whereas in the Gulf of Aden the largest size fraction played a greater relative role than in the central Red Sea. This shift in size structure of the zooplankton community from the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden is apparently primarily related to ecosystem difference between both areas, leading to a change in species composition. In addition, size reduction of individual species common to both seas may be of some significance in the extreme environment of the Red Sea.  相似文献

The rate of the primary production of the phytoplankton community in the Petalion Gulf, Aegean Sea, was studied from January 1970 to May 1971, at a station situated at approximately Latitude 37°54N; Longitude 24°11E. A variety of physical and chemical parameters such as chlorophyll, primary nutrients (N,P,Si), temperature, salinity, oxygen and light penetration were also studied simultaneously. The rate of the gross primary production varied from 40 to 200 mg C m-2 day-1, with a mean value of 90 mg C m-2 day-1. The annual gross primary production was calculated to be 33 g C m-2, which is the minimum known value in the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas. Maximum production was found at the depth of 20 m on the average, mainly due to high light intensities. Petalion Gulf supports a small photosynthetic biomass, as indicated by the low seasonal values of chlorophyll a (0.01 to 0.18 mg m-2), the highest values being found in the summer. The low production rate noted may have been due to the low nutrient concentrations found: N, 0.04 to 0.32 g-at/1; P, 0.00 to 0.15 g-at/1; Si, 0.45 to 2.25 g-at/1. It is suggested that inorganic phosphorus and nitrogen may alternate in limiting primary production rates in these oligotrophic waters. The temperate waters of the Petalion Gulf are stratified in summer (15.5° to 24.7°C) and well-mixed in winter (12.9° to 15.0°C); they are oxygen-saturated throughout the year, and of high transparency, with 86 m depth for the euphotic zone on the average yearly. The Petalion Gulf is therefore characterized as a typical oligotrophic biome in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean Seas.  相似文献

In the period from 1980 to 1984 organic phosphorus, nutrients, primary production rates (14C), chlorophyll a (chl a) standing crops, and basic oceanographic parameters were measured during 23 cruises at six stations in the open waters of the northern Adriatic Sea. These waters are significantly influenced by polluted Po River discharge. Organic phosphorus was correlated with several parameters which characterize phytoplankton activity and organic matter decomposition processes. In the late winter-spring period, organic phosphorus is produced during phytoplankton blooms. It is hypothesized that microzooplankton grazing is the main factor increasing the organic phosphorus concentrations in summer (up to 1.1 mol 1-1). Fall and winter had much lower values (below 0.3 mol 1-1) due to remineralization processes and an increased water mass exchange between the northern and central Adriatic regions. The direct contribution of organic phosphorus by freshwater discharge was not found to be significant. The higher organic phosphorus concentrations that can occur in low salinity waters are most likely due to their increased capability to support primary production.  相似文献

Particulate organic carbon (POC) and nitrogen in sea water were measured in samples collected in the adjacent seas of the Pacific Ocean during the cruises of T. S. Oshoro-Maru (1969, 1970) and the R. V. Hakuho-Maru (KH-70-4, KH-72-1). High values were obtained in the northern North Pacific and the Bering Sea, the concentration of particulate carbon in the upper 50-m layer ranged from 35 to 550 g Cl-1. In the deep waters of these area, values above 50 g Cl-1 were frequently observed. The lowest values in the surface layer and deeper layers were obtained in the Japan Sea (23 gCl-1) and in the South China Sea (7 g Cl-1) respectively. A consistent minimum was located in the intermediate waters (100–400 m) throughout the entire region studied. Variation with depth was generally irregular with marked peak values in different layers. The POC distribution consited of these peak values and a relatively uniform background concentration. These background values slightly decreased with increasing depth and were different locally. Correlation analysis between carbon concentration and apparent oxygen utilization (AOU) of ambient water for the samples in the Japan Sea and the Sulu Sea showed that there was no systematic decrease of particulate carbon with increasing AOU. In these areas, the carbon concentration scattered in the higher AOU domain ranged from 10–100 g Cl-1. These observations support the conception that downward transport of particulate matter from the overlying surface layer in the adjacent seas of the Pacific Ocean may be fairly rapid.  相似文献

Results from the Continuous Plankton Recorder (CPR) survey for 1966 and 1967 are used to describe seasonal changes in abundance, size and aspects of the population structure of Thysanoessa inermis (Krøyer) and T. raschi (M. Sars) at a depth of 10 m in the North Sea and in American coastal waters from the Grand Banks to the Gulf of Maine. Production and dry weight were estimated from these data. Two year-groups were usually present in the breeding population, the proportion surviving into a second year being higher in American waters than in the North Sea. Annual production for each species was within the range 0.69 to 4.66 mg m-3 and the ratio between production and biomass (P:B) was between 1.3 and 4.2; values outside these ranges were obtained only for American coastal waters in 1967, when the frequency of sampling was low.  相似文献

The distribution of the main herbivorous fishes (Acanthuridae, Scaridae, Siganidae) was studied across a coral reef of the Jordanian coast in the Gulf of Aqaba (Red Sea). Visual counts were realized by diving along transects (200 m long and 5 m wide), parallel to the shore, at 10 stations located from the lagoon to 40 m deep on the outer reef slope. Herbivorous reef fishes reach their highest abundance on the reef front, where 234 fishes were counted per 1,000 m2. Their density decreases on the reef flat, with an average of 150 fish 1,000 m-2, and is lowest on the outer reef slope (69 fish 1,000 m-2). Surgeonfishes form 63% of the herbivorous ichthyofauna, parrotfishes 35%, and rabbitfishes 2%. Families and species display different distributions according to biota. The Acanthuridae dominate on the reef flat, whereas the Scaridae are more numerous on the outer reef slope. The evolution of the social structure of the main species was observed: the adults generally school in the lagoon and on the reef flat, but are mainly solitary on the reef slope. The distribution of juvenile individuals is more restricted: they are concentrated on the reef front and on the upper part of the reef slope. This study is part of a cooperation programme between the University of Nice (France) and the University of Jordan, to study the ecology of the coral reefs and the surrounding waters of the Jordanian coast (Gulf of Aqaba, Red Sea)  相似文献

An investigation was undertaken to determine the distribution and activity of the heterotrophic microplankton associated with particles from a Georgia salt marshestuarine ecosystem to the western edge of the Sargasso Sea. Heterotrophic activity was determined by the uptake of 14C-glucose. More than 80% of the activity was associated with detritus greater than 3 m in creek, river and coastal (within 4 km of shore) waters. In the Gulf Stream, approximately 80% of the heterotrophic activity was in the fraction less than 3 m. In the estuary, total heterotrophic activity fluctuated with the tides; the greatest activity occurred near low ebb tide at all locations. The lowest activity was measured at slack low and high tides. In creek water most of the heterotrophic activity was associated with particles between 14 and 180 m, whereas in coastal waters (less than 4 km from shore) most of the activity was in the fraction greater than 180 m.Contribution No. 331 from the University of Georgia Marine Institute, Sapelo Island, Georgia 31327, USA.  相似文献

During the expedition of RV “Meteor” in 1964/1965 a population of Pseudeuphausia latifrons (G. O. Sars, 1883) was found in the Persian Gulf; this population is isolated and morphologically different from a population of the same species in the Arabian Sea. The adults of the Persian Gulf population are between 7 and 16 mm long which means that they are considerably larger than those found elsewhere. Morphological differences of the copulatory appendages of the male specimens from the Persian Gulf can only partly be regarded as allometric, which may be due to the abnormal length of these specimens. It is possible that isolation and the particular ecological conditions in the Persian Gulf have led to genetic changes in this population so that it can be regarded as a distinct geographical variation. Comparative analysis has shown that Pseudeuphausia colosii Torelli, 1934, described from the Red Sea, is synonymous with Pseudeuphausia latifrons (G. O. Sars, 1883).  相似文献

Molluscan assemblages were studied on fringing reefs (reef flats, Millepora-fringing reefs, fringing reefs with massive corals) and fore-reef hard substrata (coral patches, coral carpets and small patch reefs) in the Gulf of Aqaba at water depths ranging from the intertidal to 26 m. A total of 1,665 molluscan individuals from 51 taxa was counted on 44 transects, which covered 220 m2 at eight diving sites. The most important molluscs in the assemblage were the parasitic gastropod Coralliophila neritoidea, the encrusting gastropod Dendropoma maxima and the coral-associated bivalve Pedum spondyloideum. The dead assemblage, in contrast, was dominated by encrusting bivalves (Ostreoidea, Chamoidea, Spondylidae) and the coral-predating gastropod Drupella cornus. Distinct molluscan assemblages inhabit each of the three fringing reef-habitats and most of the important depth-related community changes occurred within the uppermost 5 m. In contrast, the three deeper fore-reef habitats are characterized by a more uniform molluscan composition. Molluscan assemblages were more dependent on substrata and their coral associations than on water depth. Comparisons with other published studies indicate that reefoidal hard substrata in the northern Red Sea are largely characterized by similar species-abundance patterns. The minor differences to other Red Sea studies probably reflect the northern, isolated position of the Gulf of Aqaba, the lack of certain molluscan habitats, and the differential impact of anthropogenic influences. Strong differences between living and dead assemblages in Aqaba are similar to those observed in other regions and are due to distinct biases in the dead assemblage. Molluscs closely associated with living corals (mostly bivalves and Dendropoma) can easily be overgrown after death and are thus undetectable in visual censuses. Some gastropod taxa are preferentially transported into surrounding soft-substrata postmortem or redistributed by hermit crabs. Such complex relationships between ecology and taphonomy are crucial in evaluating the quality of the molluscan fossil record in coral reef environments. The comparison of our results with literature data documents an increase in coral predators during the last two decades in the northern Red Sea. Due to the greater mollusc biodiversity in the shallower Aqaba reef habitats, damage to this coral reef zone would have the greatest impact on the overall mollusc community.  相似文献

The deep scattering layers of the North Atlantic, including the Irminger Sea, contain many predators of the key copepod species Calanus finmarchicus. Previous seasonally restricted studies have described the deep acoustic scattering layers of the Irminger Sea as ubiquitous. They have shown that the intensity of the acoustic backscatter varies across the region, and so, by implication, the potential predation pressure on C. finmarchicus also varies spatially. This paper reports observations of the distribution of epi-pelagic (0–200 m) and meso-pelagic (200–1,000 m) acoustic backscatter in the Irminger Sea, made using a scientific echosounder operating at 38 kHz during four seasonal (winter, spring and summer) cruises. Our study demonstrates that the intensity of the backscatter varies seasonally in regionally distinct ways across the Irminger Sea. The mean acoustic backscatter, both in the upper 800 m and upper 200 m of the water column, varied significantly between the northern, central and southern areas of the central basin (open ocean), and within each area between the Greenland shelf slope, open ocean and Mid-Atlantic Ridge subregions. Different patterns of seasonal change in the acoustic backscatter between the upper 800 m and upper 200 m were also seen, indicating both persistent differences in the underlying amount of backscatter in each area, and varying patterns of seasonal increase in the near surface backscatter in the different areas and subregions. These observations could be related to the different oceanographic regimes encountered in each location, and are discussed in terms of their implications for potential predation pressure on C. finmarchicus.Communicated by J.P. We estimated primary productivity and distributions of carbon in the phytoplankton, micro-zooplankton, and suspended and dissolved matter in various areas of the World Ocean to increase our information about the organic carbon cycle in the surface layer of the sea. Primary productivity ranged from about 0.1 gC m–2 day–1 in the Gulf of Mexico to 9 gC m–2 day–1 in nutrient-rich water off Peru. Phytoplankton carbon ranged from less than 10 g/l in the former to 750 g/l in the latter and in nutrient-rich water off southwest Africa. Micro-zooplankton carbon usually was less than 50 g/l in all waters, and was dominated by ciliates, copepodids, and copepod nauplii in all areas. Concentrations of particulate carbon ranged from 12 g/l off the east coast of South America to 850 g/l off southwest Africa. Concentrations of dissolved organic carbon varied between 0.5 and 1.5 mg/l in all areas except off Peru, where maximum values of 4.5 mg/l were observed. Turnover rates of carbon by small standing crops of micro-flagellates (1 to 5 longest dimension) and dinoflagellates in nutrient-poor waters were lower than those by large standing crops of diatoms and micro-flagellates in nutrient-rich waters. Concentrations of phytoplankton usually accounted for 20 to 55% and micro-zooplankton for 2 to 30% of the particulate carbon in the surface layer of the sea. Concentrations of dissolved organic carbon were not related to concentrations of particulate carbon in most waters except off Peru, where they appear to be directly related.  相似文献

Net-zooplankton biomass of the Adriatic Sea   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
On the basis of 1 107 plankton samples collected during 1971–1981 in the different parts of the Adriatic Sea, the horizontal distribution of net zooplankton biomass, expressed as dry weight and ash-free dry weight, is discussed. The northern Adriatic combined with the Gulf of Trieste usually had the highest standing crop of zooplankton. Biomass in other regions was lower and more uniform. In general, the highest zooplankton stocks came from the shallow regions close to the coast where the sources of enrichment from the land (fresh water inflow, land drainage. pollution where it exists) and the shallow sediments are the highest. We believe the elevated zooplankton biomass encountered in the north Adriatic to be due to proliferation of tolerant non-selective feeding zooplankton species, such as copepods, which can use detritus as a major fraction of their diet. The northern Adriatic is rich in living and non-living suspended particles throughout the year and can thus maintain high zooplankton biomass. This conclusion is probably valid for similar regions of the Mediterranean Sea.  相似文献

Recruitment rates of stony corals to artificial substrates were monitored for 2 years at 20 sites along the coast of Eilat, northern Red Sea, to compare with those recorded at other coral reef locations and to assess variation in recruitment at several spatial scales. Coral recruitment was low compared to that observed on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, but was similar to levels reported from other high-latitude reef locations. Pocilloporids were the most abundant coral recruits in all seasons. Recruitment was twofold higher during the first year than during the second year of study. There was considerable spatial variability, with the largest proportion of variance, apart from the error term, attributable to differences between sites, at a scale of 102 m. Spearmans ranked correlation showed consistency in spatial patterns of recruitment of pocilloporid corals between years, but not of acroporid corals. During spring, when only the brooding pocilloporid coral Stylophora pistillata reproduces at this locality, most coral recruitment occurred at central and southern sites adjacent to well-developed coral reefs. During summer, recruitment patterns varied significantly between years, with wide variation in the recruitment of broadcasting acroporid corals at northern sites located distant from coral reefs. Settlement was low at all sites during autumn and winter. This work is the first detailed analysis of coral recruitment patterns in the Red Sea, and contributes to the understanding of the spatial and temporal scales of variation in this important reef process.Communicated by O. Mesopelagic fish were collected from a cruise with the R.V. “Dr. Fridtjof Nansen” to the northern Red Sea and the interior Gulf of Aden off the Republic of Djibouti in March 1981. Off the Republic of Djibouti five species of mesopelagic fishes were caught and in the Red Sea six species. Benthosema pterotum (Alcock) were dominant in both areas. In the Red Sea Maurolicus muelleri (Gmelin) were also abundant. The mesopelagic fish caught in the Red Sea showed a pattern of vertical migration similar to that observed in other areas, in spite of the special hydrographical regime. The number of gill rakers of B. pterotum caught in the Red Sea differed significantly from that of all other populations studied. The number of photophores of M. muelleri apparently do not differ much from other populations. B. pterotum from the Red Sea mature at a larger size than other populations, while M. muelleri mature at a smaller size. The relative fecundity of M. muelleri is higher in the Red Sea than in other regions studied, while no significant difference was observed in B. pterotum. Both species appear to be opportunistic feeders. Their feeding chronology in the Red Sea seems to be similar to those observed in other areas.  相似文献

The stable carbon and oxygen isotopic compositions of the massive coralPorites lobata collected from the Gulf of Eilat, Red Sea, in May 1987 were measured along the vertical growth axis. The isotopic compositions show annual periodicity. The variations along the isotopic profile, compared with the X-radiography, indicate that the high-density bands are enriched in18O and deposited during the season of lowest water temperature (winter). In contrast, the low-density bands are depleted in18O and deposited during the warmest seawater temperatures (summer). The stable carbon and the oxygen isotopic ratios are negatively correlated with a shift in phase. During the season of higher water temperatures and light intensity values (summer), the skeleton is depleted in18O and enriched in13C and vice versa for the winter time. The shift between the carbon and the oxygen isotopic curves reflects the shift between the seasonal light intensities and seasonal temperature variations in the shallow water. The oxygen isotope ratio was used to detect the seasonal variations in seawater temperatures. The coral aragonitic skeleton is depleted in18O compared to apparent equilibrium with ambient seawater. The disequilibria range from (ca.) -3.10 to -3.50 with an average value of 3.40. The isotope fractionation behavior during skeleton precipitation is discussed in light of the environmental variables.  相似文献

Relation of fish larvae and zooplankton biomass in the Gulf of Aden   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
This study is based on zooplankton samples collected in the upper 50 m by the F.R.V. Manihine in the Gulf of Aden during October–November, 1966 and February–March, 1967. Generally, the displacement volume of zooplankton varied between 20 and 67 ml/m2. Some higher values, up to 100 ml/m2, were also observed. The number of larval fish in positive hauls ranged from 2 to 282 larvae/m2. An inverse relationship between the number of larval fish and the accompanying volume of zooplankton was noted. This relationship is discussed. It is hypothesized that larval mortality due to predation in the Gulf of Aden during the northeast monsoon (November, February and March) was very high.  相似文献

A comparison of biological and hydrographical factors was carried out in the surface waters of the Etang de Berre near Marseille. The following parameters were compared: primary production, chlorophyll a, seston, particulate carbon and albumin as biochemical indicators; temperature, salinity, oxygen, alcalinity and nutrients (phosphate, nitrate, nitrite and silicate) as physico-chemical parameters. Furthermore, quantitative and qualitative determinations of phytoplankton and zooplankton were made. During the investigations a negative correlation was found between the content of oxygen and the concentration of dissolved phosphorus. In the northern part of the area under investigation a vertical movement toward the surface exists, which can be explained by winds from the north (Mistral). The primary production and others biological factors are ten times more intensive than in the Mediterranean Sea. This fact may be due to eutrophication. In regard to the plankton, the diatoms —especially Nitzschia delicatissima CLEVE — are dominant. A relation between the percentage composition of phytoplankton and the copepod Acartia latisetosa was found.  相似文献

Large (>64 µm) protozooplankton (radiolarians, thecate dinoflagellates, foraminiferans, and tintinnid ciliates) and copepod nauplii were sampled at six stations located in sea-ice-covered waters, using a multinet at five depth intervals between the surface and 1000 m depth during a late winter expedition of R.V. Polarstern on a west-east transect across the Weddell Sea in 1989. Large (>400 µm) phaeodarian radiolarians contributed more than 98% of the carbon in the large protozooplankton fraction; large protozooplankton represented ca. 38% of the total protozooplankton carbon during late winter under the close pack ice in the upper 250 m. Large protozooplankton may therefore be an important food source for small particle-feeding zooplankton in the upper 250 m, and a modest food source down to 1000 m. Phaeodarian species distributions showed a distinct vertical pattern. Except for spumellarian and nassellarian radiolarians all other protozooplankton (foraminiferans, thecate dinoflagellates, tintinnids) were most abundant in the upper 250 m. The horizontal variation showed a western, central and eastern pattern most probably due to the differing regional hydrography. Feeding ecology of the dominant species of phaeodarians was examined using transmission electron microscopy of contents of feeding vacuoles. The 58 specimens were trophic generalists. The predominance of silica fragments and amorphous material in vacuoles and the similarity of vacuole contents of specimens from three depth zones suggest that phaeodarians in late winter may have fed on organic aggregates.Publication no. 469 of the Alfred-Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research  相似文献

Abstract:  The utility of a species can be divided into its direct, indirect, and options values. In the marine environment, direct consumptive values predominate and often lead to overexploitation at the expense of significant options values derived through bioprospecting for natural products. We surveyed the waters of the Egyptian Red Sea coast (Gulf of Aqaba [north] and the Red Sea [south]) for species of sea cucumbers and analyzed extracts from species for a range of bioactivities with potential biomedical applications. All habitat types were surveyed within these regions. We found 22 species of sea cucumber of which two, Holothuria fuscogilva and Holothuria flavomaculata , were recorded in Egypt for the first time. Although none of the species identified were unique to the Gulf of Aqaba, 10 species were only found in the Red Sea sector. Bioassay results showed that although no species had antibacterial activity, most extracts exhibited activity against Candida and Leishmania but were most active against a LoVo mammalian carcinoma cell line. Our most significant finding was the intraspecific variation in bioactivity in individuals collected from different habitat types and sectors of the coast. This variation may reflect the effect of environment on secondary metabolite production or may indicate significant genetic diversity between populations within a species. Our results indicate a potentially significant options value to sea cucumbers through bioprospecting. Given the importance of economic development in countries such as Egypt and the perceived low conservation value of invertebrates such as sea cucumbers, the linking of these factors to conservation is vital for the maintenance and sustainable exploitation of these animals .  相似文献

The complete larval development of Euphausia pacifica in the Yellow Sea is described and the stages are compared with larvae of E. nana. Euphausiid larvae examined in the present study were collected at 30 stations in the Yellow Sea in 1989. During the stages of Calyptopis III to Furcilia II, E. pacifica larvae are smaller than E. nana larvae but they are larger from Furcilia III onward. There are geographical variations in body size of Calyptopis III among the southern California waters, the eastern Japan waters, the Japan Sea, and the Yellow Sea; body size is smallest in the Yellow Sea and Japan Sea, while it is largest in southern California waters and intermediate in eastern Japan waters. Segmentation of antennal endopods was observed in the 56 to 51 furcilia forms in the Yellow Sea population, suggesting that this characteristic is not as reliable for identification of furcilia stages as the pleopods and terminal telson spines. Thus, we propose here that there are six furcilia stages of E. pacifica, instead of the seven previously reported by Boden (1950).  相似文献
