Rock outcrops represent an extensive, commercially important habitat along the southeast coast of North America, supporting large abundances of algae, invertebrates and fish. These rock outcrops have often been viewed as largely self-supporting systems, but some studies have suggested that the fish and invertebrate predators that use the ledges for shelter are strongly dependent on food from adjacent, soft-bottom habitats. We examined benthic macrofaunal abundances along two 75-m transects away from a rock ledge near Wrightsville Beach. North Carolina (depth ca. 30 m) in July 1990 and April 1991. The July 1990 samples indicated significantly higher abundances of total infauna, and of polychaetes, bivalves, isopods, and scaphopods, at a distance of 75 m from the rock ledge. In April 1991, when macrofaunal abundances were generally higher than in the previous summer, distributions of major taxa with distance from the rock ledge were more variable. Caging studies on macrofaunal abundances 10 m from the ledge, and video observations of fish abundances at 10 and 75 m from the ledge, provide support for a trophic link between the rock ledge and the adjacent soft-bottom communities. Our studies suggest that there are potentially important indirect effects of predator-prey interactions among the rock ledge-associated predators and soft-bottom prey. 相似文献

The Fraction I hydrocarbons (containing alkanes, some alkenes, cyclo-alkanes or-alkenes) in the top 2 cm of sediment, in two species of deposit feeders (the holothurian Holothuria atra and the gastropod Strombus luhuanus), and in their feces were analyzed. Collections were made at Heron Island in December, 1982, and analyses were completed in January 1983. On the basis of their relative concentrations in whole samples, and in the lipid fractions of sediment and animal tissue, the Fraction I hydrocarbons were placed in three categories. Some compounds give evidence of passive movement from a high concentration in sediment lipid into an area of lower concentration in animal lipid fractions. Others may be selectively excreted and/or degraded by animals; while still others appear to be selectively accumulated and/or produced in animal tissue. The relatively short-chain n-alkanes, mono-olefins and C25 cyclo-alkanes or alkenes in sediment and feces showed a net loss from sediment on its passage through the animals, whereas C22 to C32
n-alkanes, showed a net production in the guts of the animals and contributed to the pool of these compounds in sediments. About 40 to 55% of the group of short-chain n-alkanes, mono-olefins and C25 cyclo-alkanes or alkenes in sediment are converted into long-chain n-alkanes as the sediment passes through the guts of H. atra and S. luhuanus. H. atra remove about 0.2% of the standing pool of short-chain n-alkanes, mono-olefins and C25 cyclo-alkanes or alkenes in an average square-metre of sediment, of 2 cm depth, per day, and they contribute an amount of n-C22 to n-C32 alkanes equal to about 1.1% of the standing pool of these compounds. 相似文献

Artificial reefs have been constructed throughout the world, but their effects on adjacent soft-bottom communities are largely unknown. In December 1986, we investigated the influence of Pendleton Artificial Reef (PAR) in Southern California on the abundance of infauna in the surrounding sand bottom. PAR was constructed in 1980 of quarry rock placed in eight piles, or modules. The artificial reef altered the grain-size distribution of sediments around the reef; sediments close to the modules were coarser than those 10 or 20 m away from the modules. Densities of one of the two most common species, the polychaetePrionospio pygmaeus, were lower near the reef, perhaps due to foraging by reef-associated predators or because the habitat near the reef was less suitable. We found no evidence that foraging by reef-associated fishes caused a widespread reduction in infaunal densities near the reef, and in fact the other most common taxon,Spiophanes spp., had higher densities near the reef. The most conspicuous effect of the artificial reef concerned the tube-dwelling wormDiopatra ornata, which only occurred in close association with the modules. In addition, total infaunal density and the densities of decapods, echinoderms and sipunculids were higher withinD. ornata beds than outside the beds. These results indicate that the densities of some species were enhanced, and others depressed, around the reef, but that the overall effect of the artificial reef on the surrounding infauna was limited to a small area near the modules. 相似文献

The feeding biology of the deposit-feeding amphipod Corophium volutator is compared to that of the coexisting, deposit-feeding prosobranch Hydrobia ulvae. Regarding ingestion of particles, both forms show size selection which alone can explain their coexistence. Particle size-selection also explains some qualitative differences in the composition of the food of the two forms; thus, diatoms play a relatively larger role in the diet of H. ulvae than in the diet of c. volutator, whereas bacteria are probably relatively more important for the latter. Results of experiments with feeding of C-14 labelled microorganisms are in accordance with the findings on particle size-distribution of the gut contents, and show that (1) C. volutator can only utilize bacteria adsorbed to particles within the size range 4 to 63 (this is why the presence of clay and silt particles in the sediment are necessary for efficient feeding of this amphipod); (2) C. volutator can utilize bacteria suspended in the water pumped through its burrow for respiration if silt and clay particles are present in the sediment. (3) H. ulvae can utilize large particles, and also browses on surfaces, and some evidence is brought forward that it also utilizes mucus for trapping microorganisms. The coexistence of deposit-feeding animals is discussed. It is concluded that the number of coexisting, closely related species is usually small, and that their resource partitioning is probably mainly based on particle-size selectivity. In the case of unrelated forms (e.g. H. ulvae and C. volutator, a number of behavioural, physiological and morphological differences, and also the widespread ability of deposit feeders to utilize alternative feeding mechanisms may also lead to resource partitioning. Thus, there are often several niche dimensions related to feeding allowing a certain diversity of coexisting deposit feeders. 相似文献

Measurements of the filtration rate and oxygen consumption of the bivalve Mercenaria mercenaria (L.) have been made using flowing water systems, and then combined with growth and survivorship data to construct an energy budget for a tidal-flat population in Southampton Water. Estimated consumption (1292 kcal m-2 year-1) is mainly deposited as faeces and pseudofaeces (759 kcal) or excreted (160 kcal); 29% (374 kcal) is assimilated, of which 241 kcal are used for respiration, 72 kcal for flesh production and 61 kcal for gamete production. M. mercenaria contributes significantly to other trophic groups in Southampton Water; predators remove an estimated 55 kcal m-2 year-1, and 829 kcal pass to the scavenger/decomposer chain. 相似文献

Aspects of activity pattern, mating, breeding behaviour and reproductive organs were studied in Sesarma intermedia (de Hann) along the Tatara river estuary, Hakata Bay, western Japan. Activity started from early May after a six-month hibernation period. The daily activity pattern was bimodal with one peak after sunset and another before sunrise. Mating started after emerging from hibernation and was ended by July. Practically no mating was seen in August and thereafter, by which time most of the females were carrying eggs. Larger males mated more frequently with any sized adult female. Copulation seemed to take place both in the burrow and on the surface of natural shelter. Females began to carry eggs from mid June on the estuarine habitat, whereas on the coastal habitat ovigerous females could be seen from mid-May. Multiple ovipositions of eggs were realized. Females were able to oviposit three times without any repeated mating. It took about 30 d to incubate one egg mass and less than one week to spawn again. The release of larvae was not sporadic but rather took place within a limited time interval. Sunset seemed to have a great influence on larvae release along the seashore. Energy allocation for reproductive purposes seemed to start before crabs awoke from the hibernation period. Towards the end of the breeding period there was a drastic decline in ovarian development with a remarkable gain in hepatopancreas, a reservoir for energy. 相似文献

Sediment samples were collected from different stations of the Vellar estuary for isolation of total actinomycetes and phosphate solubilizing actinomycetes. Phosphatase activity in the sediments was also investigated Consistently a higher number of actinomycetes, phosphate solubilizing actinomycetes and phosphatase activity were recorded from the clay sediments than the sandy sediments at all the stations. In all, 7 strains showed positive phosphatase activity. Among them, one strain PS-3 exhibited good activity and was further investigated for optimum phosphorus solubilization at different pH (6, 6.5, 7, 7.5 and 8) and incubation (1st day to 20th day) periods. The solubilizing activity was maximum at the pH 7 and an incubation period of 13 days was required for an appreciable quantity of phosphorus to be leached into the medium. Based on the chemotaxonomical and conventional methods of identification, the strain PS-3 has been tentatively identified as Streptomyces galbus. The present study indicates that phosphatase enzyme and S. galbus along with other actinomycetes species would play a major role in solubilizing the phosphate in the estuarine ecosystem and increasing the soluble phosphate concentration thereby enhancing the productivity 相似文献

A computation scheme, which involves multi-step computation of the decoupled mass-balance equations in water quality models, was proposed by Park and Kuo (1996. Water Res. 30, 2255–2264). Using a simple hypothetical model, they explained the concept and demonstrated the accuracy and computational efficiency of the multi-step scheme. This paper describes the concept and the implementation of the multi-step computation scheme in a more generalized format for both intratidal and intertidal estuarine water quality models. The scheme is applied to a prototype estuary using a laterally-integrated two-dimensional intratidal model. The computational efficiency of the scheme is demonstrated by comparing the model results using the multi-step scheme with those using the traditional single-step explicit numerical solution of the kinetic processes. 相似文献

The effects of prior exposure to unlabelled naphthalene on the processes of uptake, tissue distribution and elimination of [1-14C] naphthalene by mussels (Mytilus edulis) were examined. Mussels collected from Whitsand Bay (S. W. England) in October 1980 were either held unexposed or exposed to unlabelled naphthalene (0.5 μg 1?1) for 4 wk, prior to receiving a 4 h pulse of [1-14C] naphthalene in the medium (7 μg 1?1). After 4 h exposure to [1-14C] naphthalene, the major tissues (digestive gland, gills, kidneys, mantle and remaining tissue) showed exponential depuration curves which could be resolved into two statistically significant components. The kinetics of elimination and the biological half-times of [1-14C] naphthalene in the tissues were determined. Mussels pre-exposed to unlabelled naphthalene had a significantly higher rate of elimination of [1-14C] naphthalene from the gills and kidneys. These results indicate that the toxicant, naphthalene, is actively excreted from the body by the gills and kidneys and the process is enhanced by prior exposure to the toxicant. 相似文献

Estuarine barriers may significantly reduce the upstream migration of diadromous fish species like the European eel (Anguilla anguilla L.). Previous research showed that limited barrier opening during tidal rise was a cost-efficient and effective mitigation option to improve upstream glass eel migration, without significant intrusion of sea water. This paper aims to optimise this adjusted barrier management to improve eel passage at a tidal barrier complex at the mouth of the River Yser, Flanders, Belgium, one of the most important migration routes for glass eel in Flanders. Specifically, three hypotheses were tested. The first hypothesis analysed the impact of the number of barriers opened on the upstream glass eel migration. The second hypothesis evaluated the relation between the size of the barrier opening and glass eel migration. Finally, we tested whether the suggested adjusted barrier management may lead to a significant increase in conductivity in the River Yser. Increased opening of one barrier appeared more efficient than opening several barriers slightly. Conductivity increased during periods of extreme drought and at base flow, but decreased within 24 h after the first peak flow. This indicates that adjusted barrier management does not entail salt intrusion in the Yser basin, as long as this management is not applied in extremely dry periods. Since the adjusted barrier management is easily implemented and could be applied on numerous tidal barriers, the presented results may contribute to restoration of eel populations worldwide and be of interest to a wide range of river managers and stakeholders. 相似文献

We are studying a diverse infaunal benthic community that exists in the fine sand sediments of a shallow (16 m) natural oil seep near Santa Barbara, California, USA. The study area and sampling methods are described in this introductory paper. Data presented indicate the adequacy of sampling in revealing horizontal patchiness and vertical faunal distributions. The infauna of the seep and of a nearby comparison area, without seepage but of similar depth and sediment type, are compared. The data indicate a consistently larger but fluctuating density of organisms at the seep station. However, Shannon-Weaver diversity (H=1.6 to 1.7), Peilou's evenness (J=0.80 to 0.81), and measures of dominance-diversity with estimates of graphical skewness (0.66 to 0.68) and kurtosis (1.2 to 1.4) are all similar for the two stations. The rank correlation of common species at the stations is significant according to Spearman's rho. Species common to both stations account for 85 to 95% of the individuals, further indicating the high degree of similarity between stations. Denser populations of oligochaetes and the maldanid polychaete Praxillella affinis pacifica suggest some advantages for deposit feeders at the seep station. Mats of the bacterium Beggiatoa sp. are associated with localized intense oil seepage. Hypotheses suggesting trophic enrichment and biochemical adaptation at the seep are presented. 相似文献

Above and below-ground biomass and nitrogen and carbon composition ofSpartina maritima, Halimione portulacoides andArthrocnemum perenne, dominating species in plant communities of the lower, middle and higher salt marsh, respectively, were compared in an estuarine
salt marsh in Portugal. Plant and soil nitrogen and carbon pools were estimated. For all three species root biomass was significantly
higher (70–92% of total biomass) than above-ground biomass. The percentage of root biomass was related to the location of
the plants in the marsh: higher values were found in plants growing in the lower salt marsh where the sediment was more unstable
and subject to tidal action, which stresses the role of the roots as an anchor. For all three species nitrogen concentrations
were highest in leaves, reflecting the photosynthetic role of the tissue. For carbon higher concentrations were found in the
stems, with the exception ofS. maritima. In general, lower nitrogen concentrations were found in summer, which can be explained by dilution processes due to plant
growth. For both nitrogen and carbon, higher concentrations were found in the soil surface layers. Higher soil nitrogen and
carbon levels were associated with higher organic matter contents. Most of the nitrogen in the salt marsh occurred in the
sediments (0–40 cm) and only ca. 5.7–13.3% of the total was found in the plants. The greater portion (76.5%–86%) of carbon
was found in the sediment. 相似文献

Comparison of bacterial and algal utilization of orthophosphate in an estuarine environment 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Bacterial utilization of orthophosphate in an estuarine environment has been differentiated from algal utilization by using flow-filters of 5.0, 1.2 and 0.45 m poresize. Examination by light microscopy showed that most of the bacterial population passed through a 5.0-m filter, whereas most algae were retained. In all experiments, bacterial and algal cell numbers and biomass were estimated. P-uptake by algae and bacteria was closely correlated with cell biomass. P-uptake by algae was high only in the summer months, whereas P-uptake by bacteria was high throughout the year. Neither algal nor bacterial P-uptake, however, was correlated with temperature or dissolved orthophosphate, total organic phosphate or total phosphate concentrations. Cell biomass of algae at a given time had a high correlation with dissolved organic phosphate levels in 2 weeks prior to sampling (r=0.830) and a low correlation in the 2 weeks following sampling (r=0.0005). Algal cell numbers had a high correlation with bacterial cell numbers (r=0.950). The biomass of algae and bacteria also had a high correlation (r=0.902). The rate of P-uptake from the water by algae and bacteria varied with season and with the species composition of the natural population. 相似文献

Five field surveys were conducted in an estuarine intertidal sandflat of the Seto Inland Sea (Japan) between April 1994 and April 1995. Chlorophyll a, pheopigments, total organic carbon and acid-volatile sulphides (AVS) of surface and subsurface sediments, and macrofaunal assemblages were investigated in parallel at 15 stations. Monthly hydrological data of low-tide creek water adjacent to the flat were used as a complementary environmental characterisation of the study area. Strong temporal changes were found among sampling dates, most remarkably in autumn with a major increase of algal detritus and AVS, a sharp reduction in macrofaunal abundances and species richness, and a massive mortality of the clam Ruditapes philippinarum. This dystrophic event was preceded by a photoautotrophic and hypertrophic spring–summer characterized by abundant fresh (i.e., living) algal material, including microphytobenthos and macroalgae (Ulva sp.). In summer, abundant macrofaunal assemblages reached the highest biomass values (455 g wet weight m−2 or 60.6 g ash free dry weight m−2), with a major contribution of filter-feeding bivalves Musculista senhousia and R. philippinarum. These are among the highest values reported in the literature for sedimentary shores. From autumn, there was a progressive recolonisation of macrofauna, initiated by few opportunistic polychaetes (e.g., Cirriformia tentaculata and Polydora sp.), apparently promoting a fast sediment recovery in winter, and followed by new bivalve recruits in the next spring. This study provides the first evidence of significant and interlinked within-year changes in chemical characteristics of sediments and macrofaunal assemblages in an estuarine intertidal flat at a small spatial scale (i.e., tens of meters). This demonstrates the high temporal variability of species–environment relations in these systems and a close relationship in seasonally driven trophodynamic processes among primary producers and benthic consumers. We conclude that a thorough parallel evaluation of the temporal changes in chemical characteristics of sediments should be taken into account in assessing the year-round distribution and changes of intertidal macrofauna, particularly in eutrophic, estuarine intertidal flats. An erratum to this article can be found at 相似文献

Accumulation of the bi-cyclic aromatic hydrocarbon 14C-1-naphthalene in adult female Calanus helgolandicus Claus and adult female Eurytemora affinis Poppe in sea water concentrations of hydrocarbon ranging from 0.2 to 992 g/l was studied during exposure periods of up to 15 days as part of an investigation of the possible effects on marine zooplankton of persistent exposure to low levels of petroleum hydrocarbons. With both species the body levels of radioactivity increased rapidly during the first few days of the exposure period, but after exposure for 7 to 8 days to sea water containing 50 g hydrocarbon/l an equilibrium condition was approached; in some experiments where E. affinis was exposed to 1.0 and 10 g hydrocarbon/l for 15 days there was no further increase in body levels of radioactivity after 7 to 8 days. Using a low concentration of hydrocarbon (1 g/l), the quantity of radioactivity accumulated after 10 days was found to be nearly fifty times greater in the smaller species, E. affinis, than in C. helgolandicus, when expressed in terms of body weight. After they had been exposed to the hydrocarbon for several days the copepods contained a considerable proportion of radioactivity that was no longer identifiable as naphthalene and was presumably present as metabolites. Radioactivity accumulated in the copepods after several days was rapidly lost after they were transferred to uncontaminated sea water: e.g. C. helgolandicus lost nearly 90% of its body level of radioactivity in 24 h. Thereafter the rate of loss was greatly reduced, and 5% of the original body level of radioactivity still remained in the copepods at the end of 11 days. Experiments on the breakdown of naphthalene added at low concentrations to sea water samples containing natural microbial populations indicated degradation rates of 0.1 to 0.2 g/l/24 h in oceanic water, and 2.6 g/l/24 h in inshore water samples. The results are discussed in terms of the possible transfer of hydrocarbon to a higher trophic level in areas subjected to constant low-level inputs of petroleum hydrocarbons. 相似文献

The diet of the Neotropic cormorant (Phalacrocorax brasilianus) was studied by analysing 289 regurgitated pellets collected from a roosting site at Lagoa dos Patos estuary, southern Brazil,
between November 2001 and October 2002 (except April to June). In total, 5,584 remains of prey items from 20 food types were
found. Fish composed the bulk of the diet representing 99.9% by mass and 99.7% by number. The main food items were White croaker
(Micropogonias furnieri) (73.7% by frequency of occurrence, 48.9% by mass and 41.2% by number), followed by Catfish (Ariidae) and anchovies (Engraulididae).
In Lagoa dos Patos estuary the generalist Neotropic cormorant fed mainly on the two most abundant demersal fishes (White croaker
and Catfish), which accounted for the low niche breadth calculated. The total length of all fish preyed varied from 27.2 to
318.3 mm (113.5 ± 48.0 mm), and preyed White croakers’ size differed between months. Neotropic cormorants seem to prey on
most abundant class sizes of White croaker instead of selecting similar prey size throughout the time. However, temporary
changes in diet in terms of food items, abundance and prey size were detected, revealing a high ecological plasticity of the
species. Individual daily food intake of Neotropic cormorants estimated by pellets and metabolic equations corresponded to
23.7 and 27.1% of their body mass, falling in the range of other cormorant species. Annual food consumption of the population
estimated by both methods was 73.4 and 81.9 tonnes, comprising mainly immature and subadult White croaker and Catfish which
are commercially important. Temporal variations in diet composition and fish size preyed by Neotropics cormorants, a widespread
and generalist species, suggest shifts according to fluctuations in the abundance of prey. The plasticity of this cormorant
is also revealed by their ability to adjust feeding behaviour in response to temporal or local changes in the environment,
from a generalist at the species level to a specialist at the individual or local population level. 相似文献

Diurnal vertical migration of an estuarine cladoceran,Podon polyphemoides,in the Chesapeake Bay 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Populations of the marine cladoceran Podon polyphemoides (Leuckart) in the Chesapeake Bay (USA) zooplankton typically occur in large patches, extending the length of the estuary. These patches are characterized by well defined maxima, which do not move seaward during a given season. During the day, the bulk of the population is situated in the upper part of the two-layered estuarine circulation, where it is subjected to transport by net non-tidal seaward current. One mechanism for maintaining the population within the estuary is provided by the diurnal behavior of the podonids, which migrate to deeper water during the night. The landward advection of the deeper currents, thus, helps to counterbalance seaward population loss during the day. The extent of the vertical movement of the population can be modified by various environmental factors, but a suggestive correlation with light was found. It is thought that the downward component of the migration is due to passive sinking. 相似文献
