A study of rhythmicity of larval release in three species of intertidal brachyuran crabs, based on laboratory and field experiments, was undertaken at Inhaca Island, southern Mozambique, using Leptodius exaratus and Macrophthalmus grandidieri from December 1994 to January 1995, and Arcotheres palaensis from April to July 1995. L. exaratus and M. grandidieri showed a semi-lunar cycle in larval release. The release of larvae for L. exaratus, a species having conspicuous larvae, occurred in the first half of the night, after the post-crepuscular high tide, which suggests maximisation of protection of larvae from visual predation. The larval release activity matched the late spring and early neap tides. Results from the field were similar to those from the laboratory. M. grandidieri, having inconspicuous larvae, did not show a pattern related to the light–dark cycle and hatched during spring tides (around full and new moons) to maximise larval dispersion. A. palaensis, living inside the host mussel which inhabits the lowest section of the intertidal zone, did not show a relation with moon phase, tidal or light–dark cycles. The association between sponges and the crab Inachus aguiarii Brito Capello, 1876 was studied by analysing the relationships between sponge distributional patterns on the crab carapaces and several morphological and biological crab parameters. Juveniles, mature females and mature males were differentiated on the basis of sex dimorphism and terminal pubertary moult. All three groups were fouled to different degrees by sponges. Percent sponge cover was related to carapace size only in mature males whereas mature females, all but one of which were ovigerous, were extensively covered regard-less of their size. It is proposed that some behavioural patterns unique to females, such as long resting periods in sponge-rich microhabitats, are responsible for these high sponge covers in females. Sponges showed two trends in the colonization of the carapace, leading to either a monopolizing or a sharing of the available carapace surface. The sponge species found on the carapaces studied are not obligatory epibionts of crabs, but are believed to reflect the sponge population characterizing the crab home range.  相似文献

Summary Experiments were conducted in aquaria to test the hypothesis that females of the snow crab,Chionoecetes opilio, release a sex pheromone to attract mates. Males exhibited significantly increased activity to water from a source aquarium containing recently-moulted pubescent females, egg-stripped multiparous females and recently-moulted immature females than to water from an aquarium containing berried multiparous females, eggs alone, adolescent males or an empty aquarium. Males without their cephalic chemoreceptors maintained low activity levels in the presence of recently-moulted pubescent females, whereas maxilla-ablated males reacted as strongly as intact males. These findings are discussed within the context of the ecdysteroid-sex pheromone hypothesis, proposed by Kittredgeet al. (1971) and Kittredge & Takahashi (1972), but subsequently rejected. We propose that ecdysteroids from both pubescent and multiparous females may elicit male search-and-clasp behaviour inC. opilio and that the reproductive biology of species used to refute the hypothesis was inappropriate to test the role of ecdysteroids as a cue in the mating process.  相似文献

Snow carb Chionoecetes opilio zoea I and zoea II larvae, hatched from females in a controlled mating experiment, were reared in the laboratory at 10.1 °C and 28.0 salinity, to resolve the patterns of growth (dry weight [DW]) and change in energy reserves (triacylglycerols [TAG]) within a given moult cycle. The patterns of growth and change in TAG reserves were similar in each zoeal stage. Following hatching or a moult, the zoeae entered a phase of rapid size increase, i.e. high daily growth rates (5.5 to 12.8% DWd-1), for 1/3 to 2/5 of the duration of the moult cycle. During the same period, the zoeae accumulated TAG reserves until a maximum (TAG DW-1) was reached at the end of the phase of rapid growth. The period of high growth rates and of TAG accumulation is interpreted as the required time for the zoeae to reach a point in development [i.e. point of reserves saturation (PRS); Anger and Dawirs (1981)] where sufficient growth and energy reserves allow moulting to the next stage. Following the phase of rapid growth and TAG accumulation, the zoeae entered a phase of low daily growth rates (0 to 1% DWd-1) during which the TAG reserves decreased to a minimum at the end of the phase. Prior to, and during the moult to zoea II, a phase of negative growth was observed in the zoea I larvae. We conclude that measurement of zoeal size and TAG content, along with morphometric criteria (e.g. epidermal retraction), can be used to assess growth and nutritional condition of C. opilio zoeal stages from the sea.  相似文献

Changes in lipid class, fatty acid, fat-soluble vitamins, amino acid and minerals were studied during larval development of Maja brachydactyla Balss, 1922 in order to provide information of its ontogeny and evaluate possible dietary deficiencies and constraints. Four different batches were analyzed from hatching to metamorphosis using enriched Artemia as food. Cultured larvae were in a good nutritional condition as confirmed by the continuous lipid accumulation throughout ontogeny. A regulation of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) occurred during development in order to maintain adequate basal levels of ω-3 fatty acids (likely through a retro conversion of C20 and C22 into C18 PUFA). Variations in the tocopherol levels indicated its possible role in PUFA protection against oxidation. Essential amino acid balance during development was not correlated with the Artemia feeding regime, but rather reflected inherent variations of the own species ontogeny. Larval requirements in essential minerals were fully supplied by the enriched Artemia.  相似文献

Gravid female Uca pugilator (Bosc) maintained in conditions of 14h L: 10h D light regime and constant temperature without simulated tides showed a significant positive correlation between time of hatch and time of the nighttime high tide. Light: Dark experiments showed no entrainment by LD cues. Larval hatching was delayed until dark when high tide occurred between 1900 and 2130 hrs. Hatch time was a positive linear function of the time of the nighttime high tide when high tide occurred after 2130 hrs. Time of hatch was delayed by the light period on days lacking a nighttime high tide. Experiments conducted under constant light (LL) and temperature, without simulated tides, indicated a persistent free-running rhythm of approximately 25 h 03 min, suggesting an endogenous timer. Rhythmic larval release on the nighttime high tide may be adaptive as a predator-avoidance mechanism for adult gravid females.Contribution No. 366 from the Belle W.  Mud crabs of the family Panopeidae are common organisms in coastal soft-bottom, vegetated, rubble, and oyster-bed communities along the temperate and tropical coastlines of the American continent. Similar morphology among many species renders their distinction and classification difficult. Here, we present phylogenies of western Atlantic Panopeidae based on DNA sequences of the mitochondrial large subunit rRNA (16S; 529 basepairs) and cytochrome oxidase I (COI; 640 basepairs) genes. Results suggest that the speciose genera Panopeus and Eurypanopeus are not monophyletic and that their taxonomy does not accurately reflect evolutionary partitions. In two cases (P. herbstii complex and E. depressus and allies), the molecular findings strongly support sister-species relationships that differ from previous morphology-based assumptions. We suggest that convergence or morphological stasis are responsible for the phenotypic similarities between divergent evolutionary lineages. Received: 23 July 1999 / Accepted: 5 April 2000  相似文献

The burrow living ocypodid crab Ilyoplax pusillus (De Haan, 1835) sometimes plugs the burrow of neighbors situated from 1.0 to 8.3 cm away with surface mud, while the neighbor, termed the pluggee, is in the burrow. Most pluggers were large males, whereas pluggees were smaller than pluggers and had a sex ratio close to 1:1. After being plugged, most pluggees usually reemerged on the surface within 5 min, but occasionally took up to 77 min to do so. The plugger always foraged or performed waving displays around the burrow of the pluggee while the pluggee stayed inside the burrow. Although the activity site of the pluggee was originally directed toward the burrow of the plugger or the adjacent area, after reemergence its activity site was oriented toward another direction. From these observations, it is suggested that neighbor burrow-plugging is a behavior adopted mainly by large males as a means of maintaining the area of their surface activities against smaller neighbors. My observations were made from June 1984 to June 1985 at Fukuro River Estuary, central Japan.  相似文献

The ocypodid crab Ilyoplax pingi, observed in Kanghwa I., Korea in 1992, builds a mound at the burrow entrance, by piling mud dug out from the burrow. The mounds were made by both waving and non-waving males, and by both ovigerous and non-ovigerous females. The burrow diameter at the widest part tended to be larger in crabs with mounds than in crabs without mounds, whereas the burrow depth was not different between them. The mound density increased in the late exposure period, when the crabs' surface activities declined. Mound removal and rebuilding experiments revealed that the presence of the mounds has the effect of keeping neighboring crabs away.  相似文献

We examined the mating behaviour of the New Zealand ocypodid crab Macrophthalmus hirtipes in the laboratory between February and June 1998. This species has a discrete breeding season. Mating and moulting were not linked and only intermoult females with mobile gonopore opercula were attractive to males. Allometry and compatibility of gonopods and gonopores of different-sized crabs was investigated. Under laboratory conditions, the opercula of intermoult females remained mobile on average for 11.4 d, but the duration of receptivity did not appear to be under female control. The operational sex ratio in the laboratory fluctuated greatly, but was always male-dominated. During the period of opercular mobility, females mated many times with several different males. Matings in the absence of burrows were relatively short (mean duration = 23 min, max. = 122 min) and the mating behaviour of M. hirtipes lacked courtship and mate-guarding. Males used a search-intercept method to acquire mates, with very low levels of intrasexual competition. There was no evidence of mate preference in M. hirtipes, and males spent just as long mating with ovigerous females as with non-ovigerous ones. Although M. hirtipes has ventral-type spermathecae, as do several other ocypodid crabs, it is unclear whether this promotes last-male sperm precedence. The role of burrows in modifying the mating behaviour of M. hirtipes in the field remains to be established. Received: 7 January 2000 / Accepted: 5 June 2000  相似文献

Two behaviorally distinct forms — courtship signal — (Form L and V) of Macrophthalmus japonicus (De Haan) are known. Monthly samples of each form were collected from two areas in Japan: Form L from Amakusa, western Kyushu, between April 1985 and February 1986; Form V from Fukuoka, northern Kyushu, between November 1982 and December 1983. Life-history traits were compared between two populations and discussed. Individuals from the Amakusa population grew more slowly and matured at a smaller size than those from the Fukuoka population. Maturation period and longevity did not differ significantly. In the first year of reproduction, females in the Fukuoka population produced more, and larger broods than those in the Amakusa population and crab mortality was higher in every age group. Egg size did not differ significantly. The major environmental factors — air-temperature, nitrogen content of the surface mud and period of aerial exposure were similar in both areas, and it is suggested that the differences in life-history exhibited by these crabs are genotypic, and perhaps related to their different form.  相似文献

Sperm competition in horseshoe crabs (Limulus polyphemus)   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Male horseshoe crabs have two mating tactics. Some males come ashore attached to a female (clasping the posterior margin of the females' carapace with their modified pedipalps) and nest with her on the intertidal portion of the beach during the high tide. Other males come ashore unattached and crowd around nesting couples. Fertilization is external and unattached males that are in contact with a pair, i.e. satellite males, release sperm, so the assumption has been that they are fertilizing eggs. We conducted a paternity analysis to determine the proportion of eggs fertilized by attached and satellite males. Pairs with one satellite were observed during nesting on beaches in Florida and Delaware and their eggs were collected and reared to the late trilobite or first instar horseshoe crab stage. DNA was extracted from these offspring and from each adult (female, attached and satellite male) for use in paternity analysis. A Limulus-specific hypervariable microsatellite locus was identified and primers were constructed to amplify this locus via the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Genotypes of putative parents and offspring were determined by resolving length variants of these PCR products on acrylamide gels. This allowed us to determine parentage of the offspring. We demonstrate that satellite males fertilized 40% of the eggs on average, attached males fertilized 51% and 4% of the eggs that were laid by the female were fathered neither by the attached male nor by the satellite (and 5% could not be determined unambiguously). There is high variability in the success of satellite males, ranging from 0 to 88%. Part of this variability can be explained by the position of the satellite relative to the attached male. We discuss the mechanics of fertilization and the possible advantages for multiple mating in this species.  相似文献

Larvae of the xanthid crab Pilumnoides perlatus (Poeppig, 1836) have been reared in the laboratory at 3 different temperatures (10.2°, 15° and 20°C) from hatching to megalopa stage. The 5 zoea stages and the megalopa, as well as the setation of the functional appendages are described and illustrated. The main characteristics useful to differentiate the larval stages of P. perlatus from those of Homalaspis plana, the other Chilean species of the same family so far reared, are discussed. Data on duration of zoea development, length of moulting intervals, and mortality at the 3 test temperatures are also given. This study was partially supported by the Chilean National Commission for Scientific and Technological Research (CONICYT).  相似文献

The larvae of Ocypode quadrata (Fabricius) have been reared in the laboratory, from hatching to megalopa stage, at 35 S, 25°C. The five zoeal stages and the megalopa are described, including functional appendages of each stage. On the basis of morphological characteristics, the first zoeal and megalopa stages of O. quadrata can be distinguished from similar stages of closely related Ocypodinae. At 25°C, the megalopa appeared in a minimum of 34 days following hatching.  相似文献

The mouthparts of the Australian semaphore crabHeloecius cordiformis (H. Milne-Edwards, 1837) are described. Male and female semaphore crabs were observed and collected from mangrove swamps around the south side of Botany Bay, Australia between 1983 and 1987. Semaphore crabs inhabit mangrove mud/sand flats between the midlittoral intertidal zone and the supralittoral fringe of bordering saltflats. Scanning electron micrographs provide detailed pictures of mouthpart morphology and the setae present on the third, second, and first maxillipeds; the second and first maxillae; and the mandibles. Amongst other setal types, spoon-tipped, corn, and bottle-brush setae are described. While semaphore crabs are primarily deposit feeders (microphagous), they have well developed mandibles and are, therefore, also able to eat larger plant and animal material (macrophagous). A brief comparison is made between the mouthparts of semaphore crabs and fiddler crabs (Uca spp.), since the two genera are closely related, occupy similar niches, and resemble each other in appearance. This comparison reveals that while the second maxilliped setal morphology differs between the two genera (Heloecius possesses corn setae,Uca possesses spoontipped setae) these setae may have similar functions. The feeding behaviour ofH. cordiformis is related to substrate composition, burrow construction and various mouthpart specialisations. It is conlcuded that, within the context of the present study, certain structural e.g. mouthpart modifications allowing both scavenging and deposit feeding, and behavioural modifications e.g. mound building in wet muddy habitats, enable semaphore crabs to occupy a wide range of habitat types within the mangrove. Please address all correspondence and requests for reprints to Dr Maitland at his present address at the University of the Witwatersrand  相似文献

Distribution, abundance, and resistance adaptations to higher temperature and desiccation of three species of intertidal mussels (Mytilus edulis aoteanus, Perna canaliculus and Aulacomya maoriana) were studied in New Zealand. M. edulis aoteanus generally was more abundant upshore, with P. canaliculus dominating downshore. M. edulis aoteanus was more common than P. canaliculus on the outside of mixed-species clumps. Abundance of A. maoriana was variable, with individuals favouring damp habitats such as inside mussel clumps. In moving air at 75% relative humidity and at 20°C or 30°C, median lethal levels of water loss were similar for P. canaliculus and M. edulis aoteanus but lower for A. maoriana. Rates of desiccation varied inversely with size and were higher for P. canaliculus, due mainly to valve gaping with resultant loss of water from the mantle cavity. M. edulis aoteanus was more tolerant of higher water temperatures than were the other species. Success in colonizing upshore or more aerially exposed habitats seems to be related to ability of small mussels to tolerate desiccation, especially during hot, windy weather.  相似文献

Larvae of the spider crab Inachus dorsettensis were reared in the laboratory at constant 12 °C. Development lasted 8 to 10 d in the Zoea I, 10 to 12 d in the Zoea II and 14 to 20 d in the megalopa stage. During this time, larval growth was measured in samples taken every 2 to 4 d as dry wt (W), carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and hydrogen (H); energy content (E) was calculated from C. Biomass and energy (per individual) increased in each larval stage as a parabola-shaped function of age, which could be fitted by a power equation. C, H, and E show a higher percentage gain (relative to the initial values at hatching) than W or N, suggesting that proportionally more lipid than protein is accumulated during larval development. There are cyclical changes in the relative (per unit of W) biomass and energy figures, corresponding to the larval moult cycles: immediately after each ecdysis all these values decrease, presumably due to rapid uptake of water and minerals, then they increase again due to tissue growth and remain high until the next moulting occurs. Cyclical changes in the C/N ratio suggest that proportionally more lipid than protein is accumulated during the initial (postmoult) phase of the moult cycle, followed by a period of balanced or protein-dominated gain during the intermoult and premoult phases. These patterns of growth and elemental composition observed during the complete larval development and in single moult cycles of I. dorsettensis are compared with those described in the literature for other decapod species. This comparison suggests a high degree of similarity in biochemical composition and growth characteristics of larval decapod crustaceans.  相似文献
