Sabella spallanzanii (Gmelin) is one of the best known and widely distributed Mediterranean polychaetes, but available data on its general biology has been inferred mostly from populations recently introduced to Australia. In the present paper, data on gametogenesis and larval development of a Mediterranean population from the Gulf of Taranto (Ionian Sea, Italy) are reported. Histological and electron microscopical analysis of gametogenesis showed that oogenesis, a long process beginning soon after spawning in February, is of extraovarian type. By contrast spermatogenesis is a very fast process lasting from September to December, when the coelomic cavity is completely packed with mature gametes and almost devoid of coelomocytes. During the period of spawning, some experiments of in vitro fertilisation were performed, always without success, while some of the collected females naturally spawned fertilised eggs (100%). Particularly interesting was the discovery of a small percentage of eggs which appeared fertilised but unspawned within the coelomic cavity of female. Investigation of the S. spallanzanii life cycle, from the naturally spawned fertilised eggs to embryonic and juvenile stages, was performed by daily microscopical observations and by SEM. Despite the presence of large eggs giving rise to a lecithotrophic larva, a long pelagic phase was observed, the longest found among Sabellidae. The larval development pattern is also described. Settlement began after about 2 weeks; metamorphosis occurred 10 d after settlement, when mucus was secreted abundantly and an external tube was formed. The long larval pelagic period and the development pattern, suggesting a high potential for dispersal, support both the introduction and invasive behaviour of the species in Australian waters. Introduced and cryptogenic species in Port Phillip Bay, Victoria, Australia   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Port Phillip Bay (PPB) is a large (1,930 km2), temperate embayment in southern Victoria, Australia. Extensive bay-wide surveys of PPB have occurred since 1840. In 1995/1996 the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) Centre for Research on Introduced Marine Pests (CRIMP) undertook an intensive evaluation of the region with the aims of developing a comprehensive species list of native and introduced biota and contrasting previous bay-wide assessments with a current field survey in order to detect new incursions and discern alterations to native communities. Two methods were used to meet these aims: a re-evaluation of regional museum collections and published research in PPB to identify and determine the timing of introductions; and field surveys for benthic (infauna, epifauna and encrusting) organisms between September 1995 to March 1996. One hundred and sixty introduced (99) and cryptogenic (61) species were identified representing over 13% of the recorded species of PPB. As expected, the majority of these are concentrated around the shipping ports of Geelong and Melbourne. Invasions within PPB appear to be increasing, possibly due to an increase in modern shipping traffic and an increase in aquaculture (historically associated with incidental introductions); however the records of extensive biological surveys suggest that this may, in part, be an artefact of sampling effort. In contrast to Northern Hemisphere studies, PPB (and Southern Hemisphere introductions in general) have significantly different suites of successfully invading taxa. PPB is presented as one of the most invaded marine ecosystems in the Southern Hemisphere.Communicated by M.S. Johnson, Crawley  相似文献

Seagrass beds are highly productive ecosystems and a decline in this habitat has become a global concern in recent decades. This study mapped seagrass at three sites in Port Phillip Bay between 1939 and 2011 and reviewed possible influences on seagrass cover changes. Historical aerial photographs from multiple sources were digitally scanned and orthorectified. Automated image processing techniques incorporating an unsupervised classification combined with minor editing in a GIS were applied to map seagrass cover and analyse variations in the size and distribution of seagrass beds. Large declines in seagrass cover were observed at all three sites after 1998. In contrast to other world-wide observations, these recent declines were preceded by a period of sustained seagrass expansion between the 1960s and 1990s and lower levels of seagrass cover were observed in the 1930s/40s. The recent and earlier low levels of seagrass cover coincided with extended droughts characterised by large reductions in nutrient inputs to the Bay. However, recent declines were not consistent across the Bay with three other sites remaining relatively stable during this period. The sites with large declines are all subject to longshore drift and changes in nearshore sediment transport driven by variations in weather patterns coinciding with extended periods of drought may be important influences on seagrass cover at these locations.  相似文献

Specimens of Spirographis spallanzani (Polychaeta: Sabellidae) were collected in the Gulf of Taranto, Italy, in 1991, and their mucous secretion was examined. The mucus possesses thermolabile biologically active proteins which produce hemolysis in vertebrate erythrocytes. The molecules are ineffective against both unfertilized and fertilized echinoid eggs and spermatozoa. The lytic reaction against rabbit erythrocytes varies as a function of cations, pH and temperature, and displays a fast time-course. No immunological cross-reaction could be demonstrated between hemolysins of S. spallanzani and Eisenia foetida andrei. SDS-PAGE analysis of mucus proteins reacting with sheep erythrocytes revealed that at least three major (16, 22 and 40 kDa) and two minor (29 and 34 kDa) components interact with membrane targets.  相似文献

Larval development in Amphiglena mediterranea is direct in the parental tube, and larvae crawl away as young juveniles with a radiolar crown capable of feeding. The non-feeding larvae of A. nathae are initially brooded in the parental tube, and then have a swimming phase before settling and developing a radiolar crown. Developmental data and reproductive features such as sperm structure are combined with other morphological data for an assessment of the cladistic relationships of the species in the genus Amphiglena. Two species of Laonome are included as part of the ingroup. Six genera, representing a sister group to the Laonome/Amphiglena clade, are used as an outgroup. Two most-parsimonious cladograms were found, and the evolution of reproductive features are discussed. The monophyly of Amphiglena is indicated by features previously identified, as well as two features based on sperm morphology. At present a plesiomorphic larval form cannot be identified for the genus Amphiglena. Received: 16 June 1997 / Accepted: 29 January 1998  相似文献

The pelagic larvae of the polychaete Marenzelleria viridis (Verrill, 1873) are newcomers among the meroplankton of the Baltic Sea, where they sometimes achieve an abundance of up to 21x106 ind m-3 near the coast, especially in late autumn and even in winter. Benthos samples were collected in the Darss-Zingst bodden chain from April 1992 to 1993 and used to ascertain the reproductive stages of individuals. Development from fertilized egg to benthic juvenile is described on the basis of field material. Details of the morphology of various pelagic stages and the young benthic worm are presented as drawings and scanning electron microscope photographs. In 1992, development of the gametes started in mid-May. The individuals reached maturity in late September after about 20 wk. The first planktonic stage was the fertilized egg. The larvae have initially one and later two pairs of black eyes and, in the 2nd segment, a ciliated pit. Gastrotrochs are present on the third and thereafter every alternate segment. Neuropodial setae develop once the 7-setiger stage is reached. Palps appear at the 10-setiger stage, and neuropodial bidentate hooks from the 10th to 11th setiger on. Metamorphosis into the juvenile benthic stage takes place at the earliest when the 15-setiger stage has been reached. The reproductive seasons of various populations of M. viridis and the developmental patterns of their larvae are discussed, and differences are compared with relevant findings for the spionids.  相似文献

To investigate the life-history adaptations of a brackish-water population ofNaineris laevigata Grube, a population from Acquatina lagoon near Lecce (Italy) was studied. Benthos and plankton samples were collected monthly over a period of ca. 2 yr (1989–1990). Observations of gametogenesis indicate that oogenesis is intraovaric, probably with autosynthetic yolk formation. Oogenesis takes about 7 mo, from November to April–May, for both proliferative and vitellogenetic phases. Reproduction is synchronized within the population. Spawning has also been obtained under laboratory conditions where larval development and post-larval growth were studied. Eggs measured 240 µm in diameter and were spawned within a gelatinous mass. The lecithotrophic pelagic stage was very short. Reproductive effort was high, probably because of high food availability and low level of competition. One of the most interesting findings was the probable presence of a resting stage in the life-cycle. The adaptive significance of enclosing the eggs in gelatiuous masses and of reducing the duration of the pelagic stage is discussed.  相似文献

The reproduction of Crepidula fornicata was studied in the Bay of Brest in order to characterise the first step of the reproductive cycle of this invasive species. The survey was carried out from 2000 to 2003 and different parameters were measured, namely, the percentage of the different sexual stages, the straight length of the shell and the percentage of brooding females using a survey of the embryonic development and the fecundity. The juvenile frequency increases generally from mid-June or mid-August, depending on the year. In 2001 and 2003, a first peak was observed as early as May, but it was followed by a rapid disappearance of the individuals. The sex-ratio female/male increased from 0.22 to 0.46 between 2001 and 2003. The sex change between intermediates and females took place mainly in summer and was well marked in 2001 and 2003. The survey of the embryonic development in the egg capsules brooded by the females provided an annual phenology of the laying and hatching processes. The laying period extends from February to September with three to four major periods of egg-laying per year and corresponding hatching periods about 1 month later. Each female lays two to four times per year on average. The first egg-laying concerned fewer females than subsequent ones, except in 2003, and exhibited a higher fecundity. The annual mean of the number of eggs for each stage was not significantly different, thus indicating no significant mortality rate during embryonic development. For the C. fornicata population in the Bay of Brest, several reproductive characteristics tend to highlight its invasive capacity: (1) a long reproductive period, (2) reproduction in a ‘multi-trials’ process equivalent to a spreading out of the risks and (3) a relatively high fecundity.  相似文献

The gametogenic cycles of Nephtys hombergii Audouin et M. Edw. and N. caeca Fabricius are described. Both species are polytelic (=discrete, iteroparous) and breed in their second and subsequent years. They spawn in May in the Tyne estuary. After spawning, N. hombergii retains a large number of gametocytes, which are ultimately resorbed. A new generation of gametocytes is proliferated by September and mature gametes accumulate during the winter months. Gametic development is not well synchronised.  相似文献

Pholoë minuta (Fabricius) is a prominent member of the Amphiura filiformis (O.F. Müller) subcommunity in Galway Bay, Ireland. The aim of the present investigation was to study the population dynamics and reproductive cycle of P. minuta in this area. Monthly sampling over a 2 yr period (November 1978–October 1980), at a permanent station (18 m) with a fine sand substrate, revealed a mean density of 96 individuals per 0.1 m2. The width of the fifth elytron was correlated with total body length and was used as a basis for analysing population structure. Four distinct year classes were evident and estimates of recruitment levels and growth rates were calculated. P. minuta is polytelic and reproduces for the first time when approaching 3 yr of age. Spawning occurred in March—April and appeared to be associated with a seasonal low in bottom-water temperature.  相似文献

Ceratonereis limnetica Hutchings and Glasby was collected from Lower Portland, Hawkesbury River, New South Wales, Australia, from March 1982 to September 1983. C. limnetica is one of a relatively few polychaete species in which the adults normally tolerate reverine conditions. Reproduction in this species has been modified accordingly, differing from the common pelagic spawning of many nereidids. Adults of both sexes remain essentially unmodified and spawn on the bottom. Embryos and larvae are brooded in specially constructed tubes in the sediment by the female. Both sexes have a life span of about 1 yr, dying soon after spawning. The morphological and reproductive behavioural similarities between C. limnetica and C. aequisetis are considered to indicate a close phylogenetic affinity.  相似文献

A high-density population of the polychaeteMelinna palmata Grube was the focus of a two-year study at a shallow-water location in Inner Galway Bay on the west coast of Ireland. Mean densities were highest in the second year of the study following successful recruitment. Size-frequency analysis of population structure (April 1983 to March 1985) revealed the presence of four cohorts, with the 1983 settlement becoming the dominant modal class. Size comparison of this cohort with the 1982 settlement showed that growth rates were lower and mortality higher in the 1983 settlement, which may be related to density dependent intra-specific competition.M. palmata at this location live for 2 to 2.5 yr with a small number surviving to 3 yr of age.M. palmata in Galway Bay is dioecious and has an even sex ratio. Reproductively mature worms were approximately 2 yr old when they first spawned. Spawning took place between May and July, when mature oocytes had a modal size of ca. 290µm. Proliferation of previtellogenic oocytes (ca. 10µm) from the gonads occurred following spawning. Growth over the winter was slow and was followed by a period of rapid growth between March and May, coincident with rising water temperatures. The presence of mature unspawned oocytes, which were resorbed after commencement of new proliferation, was taken as evidence of the species propensity for polytely. However, post-spawning mortality appeared to be high, so that only a small number of individuals survived to spawn the following year. The highest abundance of mature males was encountered between May and August, but lower levels of mature stages were present throughout the year.  相似文献

The reproductive cycle of Bispira volutacornis, a dioecious polychaete, was followed over two spawning periods in Lettercallow Bay, on the west coast of Ireland. In the younger generation of sexually mature adults, gender can be determined on the basis of colour, the dorsal aspect of the males being cream at maturation, whilst the females are pink at the previtellogenic stage and an olive green at maturation. An annual reproductive cycle of 12 months shows that oocyte/sperm maturation is extraovarian. The male reproductive cycle proceeded at a more rapid pace than that of the female cycle, with sperm maturing earlier. Spawning in B. volutacornis occurred between late July and early September. B. volutacornis is a polytelic species, surviving spawning and releasing all gametes in a single batch, with a mean spawned oocyte diameter of 118 m. The reproductive cycle appears to be regulated by a seasonal change in water temperature, and spawning is timed to produce larvae during the autumnal planktonic bloom in Lettercallow Bay.Communicated by J.P. The sabellid polychaete Sabellastarte spectabilis (Grube 1878) was collected at approximately monthly intervals from January 2002 to December 2003 from intertidal and subtidal reefs near the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology in Kane’ohe Bay, Hawaii, USA (21°N, 157°W). Gametogenesis and spawning periodicity were investigated using histological techniques and induction of spawning trials. Worms were characterized into four discrete reproductive stages based on histological evidence: (1) No evidence of reproductive activity in the coelom (sex cannot be determined), (2) Only coelomocytes present in the coelom (sex cannot be determined), (3) Some gametes present in the coelom (sex can be determined) and (4) Coelom densely packed with gametes (sex can be determined). The small hermaphroditic portion of the population was not used in this study. Stage 4 worms were present over an extended period of time (females, March–December and males, March–November) indicating a potentially broad reproductive season. No correlation between day length and maturation stages in S. spectabilis was detected. However, the statistical model Y = ([394.26 × X] − [7.793 × X 2]) − 4960.781 where Y the % frequency of Stage 4 worms and X the mean monthly water temperature explained 44% of the variation between water temperature and % frequency of Stage 4 worms. Maturation appeared to coincide with water temperatures of 24–25°C (March–September) after which there is a reduction in the % frequency of stage 4 individuals. Induction of spawning trials conducted between May and January showed the month of October with a significantly higher percent success than any other month investigated. According to all available information (e.g., natural spawning in water tables, histological data, induction of spawning trials, correlation of maturation stages with observed changes in average monthly water temperature.), there is an apparent peak in reproductive activity (spawning) within a broad maturational season, which may be influenced by water temperature.  相似文献

Pholoe minuta is a numerically dominant member of the Amphiura filiformis subcommunity in Galway Bay. A longterm (5 yr) assessment of its population structure highlighted the shortfall in information regarding juvenile stages in the post-spawning months. Additional remote and in situ sampling programmes (including the use of a Muus sampling device), covering two successive postspawning periods, were undertaken to provide information on the juvenile recruits. Estimates of density levels (130 to 680 m-2), growth rates (doubling in size in 2 mo) and mortalities (80%) were calculated for the newly settled P. minuta. Mean monthly densities, seasonal population structure, recruitment levels (21.1%), growth (1 mm per annum) and survivorship patterns of the adult population were evaluated using the dorsal width of the fifth chaetiger, which is shown to be a suitable parameter of total body size. The success of grab sampling as a method for examining early settlement of P. minuta is critically reviewed, and a recommendation for future benthic population studies is proposed.  相似文献

Vertical distributions of the larval stages of Euphausia nana Brinton and E. similis G. O. Sars in Sagami Bay and Suruga Bay, Central Japan were studied. Most of the metanauplius larvae of E. nana occurred between 25 and 80 m depth, and they were found at greater depths than the eggs and calyptopis larvae. The nauplii and metanauplii of e. similis were mainly found between 50 and 100 m depth, and they also occurred deeper than the eggs and calyptopes. The larvae of the two species from calyptopis I demonstrate diurnal vertical migration. However, this phenomenon was not clear in the season (March) when a seasonal thermocline was absent. Calyptopes and fruciliae of E. similis occurred deeper and migrated over greater vertical distances than those of E. nana. The distance of migration of furcilia I larvae of E. similis was estimated to be about 200 m.  相似文献

Oogenesis in polychaetes has, in most species, two main phases: a coelomic phase during which vitellogenesis occurs, and an ovarian phase. Details of the latter are known in very few species. Efficient reproduction requires coordination between these two phases of oocyte differentiation. The ovaries of Cirratulus cirratus (O. F. Müller) occur 2/segment throughout the fertile region of the body; 5 main stages of oocyte differentiation can be recognised on them: stem cells, oogonia, premeiotic oocytes, early oocytes and terminal oocytes. A quantitative study of the composition of the ovary throughout the reproductive cycle shows that the ovary size is approximately constant, but that the percentage of cells in the terminal oocyte stage is reduced to zero prior to spawning. This stage in oocyte differentiation is therefore a critical one, at which oogenesis may be arrested. The ovary alternates between a proliferative phase when the terminal oocytes are present, and a non-proliferative phase when they are absent. The overall rate of germ cell production for each ovary is low, less than 1 cell/ovary/day, and the, ovary tissue turnover time is greater than 2 years. A qualitative model describing the production of oocytes is presented, and the implications of the low rate of germ cell production are discussed. A low rate of germ cell proliferation, as in Cirratulus cirratus, implies that the rate of oocyte output into the coelom will be controlled by factors influencing the later stages of ovarian oocyte differentiation.  相似文献

The bloodworm Glycera dibranchiata Ehlers, 1968 accumulates cadmium through the general body surface and the intestine. Absorption through the gut accounts for cadmium which rapidly binds to coelomic proteins. Intracoelomic injection of 109Cd demonstrates that cadmium binds readily to hemoglobin and other proteins. The degree of cadmium binding is pH-dependent. The apparent pK of binding sites in body wall and musculature homogenates is 5.39. Cadmium ions injected into the coelom at 7 g g-1 tissue increase proline incorporation rates into the positively charged hemoglobin (cathode fraction) by 15-fold in 3 days. A 3-fold increase of proline incorporation was observed in the anode hemoglobin fraction over the same time period. Radioactivity in various protein fractions decreases at different rates after injection of 109Cd. Comparisons between the function of mammalian metallothionein and the coelomic fluid proteins of G. dibranchiata as a detoxification mechanism are discussed.  相似文献

Reproductive effort in terms of fecundity and energy allocation was studied in Ophryotrocha labronica La Greca and Bacci, 1962 a small, semicontinuous iteroparous species. In O. labronica fecundity is more or less constant throughout life, and the total fecundity of the 64 couples examined in this experiment only declined by 12% from the first to the last spawning. No linear relationship was found between fecundity and body size.␣The energy content of germinal and somatic tissues was determined by differential scanning calorimeter. The␣reproductive effort and a reproductive index based on the fifth spawning were evaluated to compare the␣patterns of energy allocation of a semicontinuous iteroparous species with semelparous and annual iteroparous species. The reproductive index ranged from 0.20 to 0.77, with an average of 0.480. The average reproductive effort was 0.840, ranging from 0.60 to 0.96. These figures highlight the enormous amount of energy that O. labronica allocates to reproductive tissues. Received: 23 July 1997 / Accepted: 20 October 1998  相似文献
