In demersal fish species with a pelagic larval stage, settlement patterns may be a consequence of variations in larval supply, habitat selection at settlement, and processes acting between the time of settlement and the time of benthic sampling. This study describes temporal (1994-1998) and spatial variation in plaice (Pleuronectes platessa L.) settlement densities in four semi-isolated nursery areas with similar habitat characteristics, in the non-tidal Gullmarsfjord on the west coast of Sweden. Juvenile abundance varied by a factor of ten, both among years and among nursery grounds. For the 3 years when larval sampling was undertaken (1994-1996) and all nursery areas, there was a significant positive relationship between larval supply and juvenile abundance (linear regression: r2=0.45, n=24, P<0.001). On the southern side of the fjord, a significant positive relationship between larval and juvenile abundance was found in one area (r2=0.62, n=6, P<0.05). The absolute mortality rate of plaice after settlement was related to the initial settlement density (r2=0.95, n=20, P<0.001), and to the abundance of predatory shrimps Crangon crangon (r2=0.44, n=20, P<0.01). Plaice otoliths were found in 6% of the shrimp stomachs analysed from an area with high density (13.3 m-2) of newly settled plaice. The present study suggests that the density of juvenile plaice was limited by larval supply to the nursery grounds. Consistency in the relative abundance of juveniles among nursery grounds between years also suggested that some nursery areas may be in the settlement shadow of others. The irregular nature of the coastline in combination with larval depletion could thereby cause small-scale (103-104 m) variation in settlement densities of the same order of magnitude as the inter-annual variability in recruitment to individual nursery grounds.  相似文献

The nature and speed of intraspecific genetic differentiation between the Artemia population native to San Francisco Bay (SFB) and populations resulting from introduction of SFB material into Vietnam (Vinh Chau, VC) have been investigated from a multidisciplinary perspective using reproductive characters, allozymes and mitochondrial DNA. Rapid divergence between SFB and VC Artemia is evident from an analysis of five reproductive traits at the temperatures of 26°C and 30°C. The VC strain seems to be better adapted to high temperature, as gauged by the significantly higher reproductive output displayed compared with SFB Artemia. Analysis of variance confirms the existence of a strong genetic component involved in the determination of encystment. Allozyme analysis (20 loci) of the same strains reveals considerable genetic differences between samples, cultured at the above temperatures. Combined probability values for tests of allele frequency homogeneity pooled over all polymorphic loci, at 30°C as well as between temperatures, are 0.015 and 0.026, respectively. In addition, cluster analysis shows evidence of differentiation of Vietnamese Artemia from the wild (SFB) stock as early as within a year after inoculation. Mitochondrial DNA RFLP markers show similar patterns of genetic differentiation to those seen with allozymes and reproductive traits. However, unlike allozymes, there is strong evidence of a reduction in haplotype diversity from 40.6% in SFB Artemia to 10.5% in the established VC strain. Although genetic drift could account for much of the depletion in gene diversity, firm indications are obtained of selective forces shaping the gene pool in the tropical conditions of Vietnam. The brine shrimp is an invaluable genetic system for fine-scale studies of microevolutionary divergence, and multidisciplinary studies are likely to be of both fundamental and practical value for such inquiries.Communicated by O. The establishment and spread of a non-native species in an introduced range depends to a large extent on the performance of the species under the prevailing environmental conditions. The spawning, larval and spatfall periods of the invasive gastropod Crepidula fornicata were monitored in the intertidal zone at its northernmost range in Wales, UK, between February 2010 and January 2011. The duration of the reproductive season was similar to that recorded from more southerly European populations. Spawning and larval release occurred throughout most of the year even at low seawater temperatures of <7 °C, but benthic recruitment was observed over a much shorter period at seawater temperatures >16 °C. Recruitment was low and likely controlled by post-settlement mortality. These observations suggest that C. fornicata’s northwards spread in Welsh waters will not be limited by seawater temperature negatively affecting reproduction, but by processes acting after larval release. These data show the importance of incorporating settlement and post-settlement processes into studies on recruitment success when aiming to predict the potential spread of a potentially harmful invader such as C. fornicata.  相似文献

The structure of the larval fish assemblages in Independencia Bay on the coast of Peru was examined using a combination of univariate and multivariate techniques. The plankton of Independencia Bay was sampled during 2000, to ascertain ichthyoplankton composition, abundance, and seasonality. These data were used to assess the function of the bay as spawning and nursery grounds and were related to the regional oceanography. In total, 16,156 fish larvae, representing 34 families, 48 genera, and 48 species were collected. Engraulidae, Normanichthyidae, Blenniidae, Gobiesocidae, Haemulidae, Labrisomidae, Pinguipedidae, and Atherinidae comprised 96.8% of the larvae captured; the remaining 3.2% included 26 families. Greatest mean larval fish densities, 319–1,381 per 100 m3, were recorded between September and November, suggesting a major spring spawning period. The most abundant fish larvae during this period were preflexion stage mote sculpins (Normanichthyidae) and newly hatched and preflexion stage anchovies (Engraulidae). A second, smaller summer peak was dominated by preflexion stage anchovies, followed by preflexion stage mote sculpins. The occurrence of high larval fish densities and the wide range of larval stages suggest that Independencia Bay is a regionally important spawning and nursery ground for marine fish. The principal component analysis showed that temperature and salinity were the dominant variables within the first two principal components, which accounted for 74.4% of the variation in environmental conditions. These conditions varied over time, station, and depth; however, interaction terms could not clearly be identified. Fitting a multinomial logistic model showed that larval fish assemblages and environmental conditions were associated in a complex way. The spring and summer ichthyoplankton abundance peaks in Independencia Bay coincided with high zooplankton standing stock and also coincided approximately with the periods of increased upwelling in the area.Communicated by O. Juvenile weakfish, Cynoscion regalis (Bloch and Schneider, 1801), exhibit significant spatial diffrences in growth rate and condition factor among estuarine nursery zones in Delaware Bay. The potential influence of temperature and salinity on the suitability of estuarine nursery areas for juvenile weakfish was investigated in laboratory experiments by measuring ad libitum feeding rate, growth rate and gross growth efficiency of juveniles collected in Delaware Bay in 1990 (40 to 50 mm standard length; 1.4 to 2.1 g) in 12 temperature/salinity treatments (temperatures: 20, 24, 28°C; salinities: 5, 12, 19, 26 ppt) representing conditions encountered in different estuarine zones during spring/summer. Feeding rates (FR) increased significantly with temperature at all salinities, ranging from 10 to 15% body wt d-1 at 20°C to 33–39% body wt d-1 at 28°C. Specific growth rates (SGR) ranged from 1.4 to 9.4% body wt d-1 (0.3 to 1.5 mm d-1) and gross growth efficiencies (K 1) varied from 13.6 to 26.4% across temperature/salinity combinations. Based on nonlinear multiple regression models, predicted optimal temperatures for SGR and K 1 were 29 and 27°C, respectively. Salinity effects on SGR and K 1 were significant at 24 and 28°C where predicted optimal salinity was 20 ppt. At these warmer temperatures, SGR and K 1 were significantly lower at 5 than at 19 ppt despite higher FR at 5 ppt. Therefore, maximum growth rate and growth efficiency occurred under conditions characteristic of mesohaline nurseries. This finding is consistent with spatial patterns of growth in Delaware Bay, implying that physicochemical gradients influence the value of particular estuarine zones as nurseries for juvenile weakfish by affecting the energetics of feeding and growth. Laboratory results indicate a seasonal shift in the location of physiologically optimal nurseries within estuaries. During late spring/early summer, warmer temperatures in oligohaline areas permit higher feeding rate and faster growth compared to mesohaline areas. By mid-late summer, spatial temperature gradients diminish and mesohaline areas provide more suitable physicochemical conditions for growth rate and growth efficiency whereas oligohaline areas become energetically stressful. Substantial mortality occurred at 5 ppt and 28°C, providing additional evidence that oligohaline conditions are stressful during late summer. Furthermore, juveniles provided a choice among salinities in laboratory trials preferred those salinities which promoted higher growth rates. The extensive use of oligohaline nurseries by juvenile weakfish despite the potential for reduced growth rate and growth efficiency suggests this estuarine zone may provide a substantial refuge from predation.  相似文献

A laboratory-based study was performed to assess the impact of climate warming on the recruitment of the endangered population of the European lobster (Homarus gammarus) at Helgoland (North Sea, German Bight). Egg-bearing females collected in situ just after spawning in late summer were subjected to various seasonal temperature regimes. Regimes with elevated temperatures (mild winters) resulted in a strong seasonal forward shift of larval hatching. Hatching took place at significantly lower temperatures than under regimes with normal winters. Experiments on larval development across a range of constant temperatures showed that no successful larval development occurred at temperatures below 14°C. Larval survival increased from 9% at 14°C to 80% at 22°C, while duration of larval development decreased correspondingly from 26 to 13 days. We hypothesize that an ongoing warming of the North Sea will strongly affect the recruitment success of the Helgoland lobster, mainly resulting from a decoupling of the seasonal peak appearance of larvae from optimal external conditions (temperature, food availability) for larval development.  相似文献

The pelagic yellowtail kingfish Seriola lalandi has become a target species for aquaculture in Asia and Australasia. Australasian production is reliant on larviculture from eggs of captive brood stock; however, knowledge regarding the nutritional requirements of larvae of this species is still scarce, particularly in relation to lipids. As a first step in establishing these requirements, eggs and larvae from captive S. lalandi brood stock were examined for differences in total protein, total lipid and lipid classes between individual spawning events, over the spawning season, and during larval development from fertilisation to 15 days post hatch. Results indicate that total protein egg−1 varied significantly between individual spawning events within a season, but neither total lipid nor total protein egg−1 varied significantly across the spawning season. Brood stock egg lipids were made up of approximately 60% phospholipid, 25% wax and/or sterol esters (WE), 15% triacylglycerol (TAG), and small amounts of sterols and free fatty acids. During the early larval period, both WE and TAG were utilised concurrently for energy. The larvae experienced very high mortality around 5–7 days post hatch, which coincided with very low levels of all neutral lipid classes. Although many other factors may also influence larval mortality, these results indicate that lipid provisioning may be an important factor in larval survival during the critical period around first-feeding in this species. Examination of ratios of TAG:ST, often used as a condition index in fish larvae, suggested that some of the larvae were suffering from starvation. However, as egg-derived WE appears to provide a significant source of energy during the early larval period in S. lalandi, it is suggested that WE should be included in any index of larval nutritional state.  相似文献

Summary Maternal modification of the larval environment was studied in the bromeliad crab, Metopaulias depressus (Decapoda, Grapsidae). The bromeliad crab breeds in rain water stored in the leaf axils of large Jamaican bromeliads. The physico-chemical water conditions are highly unfavorable for the development of the larvae. Water in nursery axils contained no leaf litter and up to 14 empty snail shells, whereas other axils were partly or completely covered with leaf litter and rarely held snail shells. Mother crabs removed leaf litter from nursery axils, and occasionally from neighboring axils. Nursery axils contained twice as much dissolved oxygen (DO2) at night when DO2 is at a minimum, and less dissolved carbon dioxide (DCO2) than axils unattended by a crab. The higher DO2 content in nurseries meets the respiratory needs of an average sized brood, but the lower concentration in axils with litter may not. It is suggested that the higher DO2 and lower DCO2 concentrations in the nursery axils result from a water circulation produced by the mother and her leaf litter cleaning behavior. The low pH and the Ca2+ content in the water of unattended bromeliad axils are unfavorable for development of larvae and young. Mother crabs significantly increased pH and Ca2+ by adding empty snail shells to the nursery-axil water. In experiments where the brood was transferred to other axils, mothers switched from the nursery axil to the new axil containing the brood, and there continued caring for their offspring.  相似文献

Juvenile movements are rarely considered in studies of connectivity. This study investigates movements in juvenile and adult life stages of an ecologically important temperate piscivore, the whiting (Merlangius merlangus). Adult movement was assessed from tag-recapture data collected between 1958 and 1980 around the coast of Scotland. Displacement distances ranged from 53 to 123 km. Adults rarely dispersed offshore in the North Sea, and exchange with the west of Scotland was negligible. Connectivity between nursery and spawning grounds was investigated using otolith microchemistry. Five juvenile nursery areas were discriminated with an accuracy of 75–85%. Comparing isotopic signatures of adults and juveniles indicated that several nursery areas contributed to each spawning aggregation. The lack of evidence for return migrations suggested an opportunistic and non-philopatric recruitment strategy within a single population unit. Differences in the proportion contribution of juveniles to adult aggregations also indicated that the “value” of nursery areas differed and the Scottish west coast could be viewed as a net source of recruits to the North Sea. Given the extent of juvenile dispersal, this study highlights the fact that all stages of the life cycle should be considered in studies of connectivity.  相似文献

The global decline in reef health has prompted the need for effective management methodologies, including the development of active restoration measures. One such approach is the ‘gardening concept’ that involves use of underwater nurseries where coral fragments are farmed before their transplantation into denuded reefs. Here we document enhanced sexual reproduction in colonies of the coral Stylophora pistillata cultured in mid-water floating nursery situated in nutrient enriched water, near the fish farms in Eilat, Red Sea. We found that after 2 years of nursery, the average number of oocytes per polyp in farmed colonies was ca. 35% higher than in corresponding naturally growing colonies. Small branches in the nursery developed gravid colonies that released equal (or more) numbers of planula larvae as compared to similar size, 5-year old naturally growing colonies. These nursery-borne planulae possessed more zooxanthellae and contained more chlorophyll per larva. While settled and metamorphosed in equal rates compared to planulae originated from reef-grown colonies, the nursery borne planulae developed faster growing young colonies. We estimate that a coral nursery could generate, during the reproductive season, tens of millions of planula larvae and therefore should be regarded as a ‘larval dispersion hub’ that can be used as a management tool for natural recruitment enhancement.  相似文献

Lingcod, Ophiodon elongatus Girard, have a 3-month pelagic larval stage and are an important recreational and commercial species on the west coast of North America. Cytochrome-c oxidase I sequences from tissue samples were used to characterize population structure and infer patterns of gene flow from California to Alaska. No significant genetic structure was found when estimates of Wright’s F ST (i.e., ΦST) were generated among all populations sampled. Nesting populations within regions, however, indicated that the inner coast of Washington State is distinct, a result corroborating previous allozyme work. Coalescent-based estimates of gene flow indicate that although migration can be high from an evolutionary perspective, nearly half of all comparisons among populations showed no gene flow in at least one direction. From an ecological perspective, moderate migration rates (Nm < 10) among most populations provide surprisingly limited connectivity at large (∼ 1,000 km) and small (∼100 km) spatial scales. Coalescent-based estimates also show that gene flow between the inner and the outer coasts is asymmetric, a result consistent with prevailing surface currents. Because the expected inter-locus variances for coalescent-based estimates of gene flow are likely large, future work will benefit from analyses of nuclear DNA markers. However, limited demographic connectivity on large spatial scales may help explain why stock recovery has been uneven, with greater recovery in the northern (87% rebuilt) than in the southern (24% rebuilt) fishery region, supporting a regional management strategy. These results suggest that despite a 3-month pelagic larval stage, some areas may be effectively closed with respect to both population dynamics and fishery management issues.  相似文献

Studies conducted at Kwajalein Atoll (9°N; 168°E) in early 1988 reveal that marine organisms are commonly rafted into the area on drift pumice, drift wood and other flotsam. Coralskeletons on pumice provide the most useful quantitative data because they persist after rafted motile organisms have departed and rafted sessile forms have decomposed or been scavenged. The estimated minimum number of pumice fragments carrying corals into Kwajalein Atoll during its geological history is on the order of 109, with a more realistic estimate in excess of 1011. The estimated number of coral colonies rafted into the atoll would probably have to be increased several-fold if rafting on floating organic materials such as wood, charcoal, nuts and seeds could be determined. In the present study, a typical sample of beached pumice from Kwajalein Atoll contained 103 coral colonies per m3 of bulk pumice fragments. Major pumice rafting episodes frequently result from volcanic eruptions. Estimates based on the observed K wajalein coral fouling rate and literature values for drift pumice production suggest that 105 colonies could be rafted through the tropics by the smallest reported pumice-producing events and up to 1012 colonies for large events. In the present study, most of the rafted corals that were recovered belong to species of the genus Pocillopora, but speccics of Porites and Millepora were also collected. Analysis of surface-current data and reported drift patterns for pumice, logs, drift bottles and wrecks suggests that movement of rafted corals and drifting larvae is predominantly from peripheral areas of low coral-species diversity into centers of high coral diversity. Coral diversity centers might be viewed as areas of coral species accumulation rather than centers of coral species origin.  相似文献

This study provides a comprehensive examination of the life cycle dynamics of the brown shrimp (Crangon crangon L.) in the Mondego estuary, Portugal, a habitat located near the southern edge of the range of this species in European waters. The phenology of all life stages was documented (from the occurrence of ovigerous females, developing embryos, planktonic larvae and benthic post-larvae), and migration patterns of larvae into and out of the estuary were examined. Temperature-dependent functions of egg and larval development were combined with data on field abundance to predict the timing and magnitude of occurrence of larvae and recruits. Compared to brown shrimp at higher latitudes, southern conspecifics grow slower, mature earlier and have smaller brood sizes, and larvae have a more protracted settlement period. The Mondego estuary, besides acting as nursery area, is a dynamic platform for C. crangon to use in different stages, sizes and seasons.  相似文献

Northern shrimp Pandalus borealis (Krøyer) larvae hatch in the northern Gulf of St. Lawrence from early May to the end of June, and larval development occurs over a range of relatively cold water temperatures. Because of the long duration of the pelagic phase and the difficulty of sampling all successive larval stages at sea, we used laboratory experiments to assess the effects of water temperature on larval development and growth. In spring 2000, P. borealis larvae were reared from hatching to the first juvenile stages (i.e., stage VI and VII) at three temperatures (3, 5, and 8°C) representing conditions similar to those in spring in the northern Gulf of St. Lawrence. Larval development and growth were dependent on temperature, with longer duration and smaller size (cephalothorax length, CL, and dry mass, DM) at 3°C relative to the 5 and 8°C treatments. There were no significant differences in the morphological characters of the different stages among treatments, indicating that regular moults occurred at each temperature. The results suggest a negative impact of cold temperatures (lower intra-moult growth rates and smaller size) and, possibly, higher cumulative mortality due to longer development time that could affect the success of cohorts at sea. However, CL and DM for stage III and later larvae were smaller than those of larvae identified at the same developmental stage in field locations. It is possible that the diet offered to larvae in this experiment (Artemia nauplii, either newly hatched nauplii or live adults, depending on the developmental stage) was not optimal for growth, even though it is known to support successful P. borealis larval development. In the field, there is the possibility that phytoplankton contributes to the larval diet during the first stages and stimulates development of the digestive glands. Furthermore, the nutritional quality of the natural plankton diet (e.g., high protein content, fatty acid composition) might be superior and favourable to higher growth rates even at lower temperatures.Communicated by R.J. The effect of temperature on yolk utilization, initial growth and behaviour of larvae of four species of marine fishes, i.e.,Acanthopagrus schlegeli, Engraulis japonica, Pagrus major andParalichthys olivaceus, was investigated under laboratory conditions at Hiroshima in 1989. The yolk sac was absorbed earlier with increasing temperature for all species. Morphological characters such as pectoral fin appearance, mouth opening and eye pigmentation differed from species to species over the range of experimental temperatures, and the sequence of development of these characters varied with temperature even within the same species. Temperature did not have a large influence on the maximum growth of unfed larvae, but had a clear effect on the time to starvation, occurring earlier at higher temperatures. Larval behaviour as indicated by time spent moving was also influenced by temperature; behavioural activity was greater at higher temperatures for all species examined. The effect of temperature on the early stage of larval life is discussed in terms of behavioural and morphological developments, as well as on yolk utilization, and its influence on larval survival in nature and under rearing conditions is evaluated.  相似文献

Young-of-the-year (YOY) Sebastes inermis use Zostera and Sargassum beds as nursery grounds, although it is not known which habitat YOY prefer. In this study, YOY S. inermis were accurately assigned to Zostera or Sargassum beds by two approaches: the width and length of the otolith nucleus and the composition of trace elements in otoliths. The otolith nucleus was initially opaque and then showed a marked shift to hyaline deposition once YOY settled in the nursery grounds. The first hyaline zone (FHZ) was deposited earlier in Zostera beds (from mid-May to early June) than in Sargassum beds (around mid-summer). Likewise, irrespective of settlement year, the FHZ was formed at both significantly younger ages and shorter back-calculated sizes (total length, TL) in the Zostera bed (overall mean: 131±3 days; 2.5±1.7 mm TL) than in the Sargassum bed (overall mean: 158±12 days; 61.3±1.00 mm TL). YOY collected in the Zostera bed were born earlier (mainly in January) than YOY from the Sargassum bed (mainly in February). In addition, a significant linear relationship was found between the age at formation of the FHZ and nucleus dimensions, suggesting that nucleus dimensions were a reliable macroscopic indicator of the time of formation of the FHZ and, consequently, also an indicator of the nursery where YOY grew. Linear discriminant function analysis (LDFA) based on the width and length of the otolith nucleus could distinguish juveniles from Zostera (88–96%) and Sargassum (96–97%) beds with a high degree of accuracy. In the other approach, six detectable trace elements (Li, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Ba) in otoliths of YOY collected in the nursery grounds were measured by high-resolution, inductively coupled mass spectrometry. LDFA based on the trace elemental composition separated YOY from three nurseries with 100% of accuracy. Findings suggest that both the trace elemental composition and nucleus dimensions of otoliths can be used as natural tags of the nursery grounds of S. inermis, offering a considerable potential for answering questions on habitat use and the contribution of nursery grounds to the adult stock.Communicated by T. Larvae of Pleuroncodes monodon (Milne-Edwards, 1837), a red crab of commercial importance in South America, were reared in the laboratory at 2 different temperatures (15° and 20°C), from hatching up to the last larval stage. The 5 typical stages, with their corresponding functional appendages, are described and figured. The main characteristics useful in differentiating larvae of P. monodon from those of the other Chilean species of Galatheidae and its northern congener P. planipes are discussed. Feeding ecology of Greenland halibut (Gr. halibut) (Reinhardtius hippoglossoides) and sandeel (Ammodytes sp.) larvae on the West Greenland shelf was studied during the main part of the productive season (May, June and July). Copepods were the main prey item for larval Gr. halibut and sandeel, constituting between 88 and 99% of the ingested prey biomass. For both species, absolute size of preferred prey increased during ontogeny. However, preferred copepod size in relation to larval length differed markedly. In Gr. halibut, the relative size of the prey declined during growth of the larvae, while it remained constant for sandeel at a level of 2.7% of larval length. This led to a reduction in prey niche overlap between the two species. The available prey copepod biomass differed distinctly across the shelf area. In May, the prey density of Gr. halibut was the highest in the off-shelf area in Davis Strait. In June and July, the prey-rich areas for both species were mainly located at the slopes of the banks and at the shelf break area. Gut fullness was higher in these areas than in neighbouring areas, suggesting that the larval food resource could be scarce. The feeding ecology of Gr. halibut and sandeel could explain why larval abundance indices of the two species have historically shown opposite responses to yearly environmental conditions and total zooplankton occurrence.  相似文献

Larval settlement in the marine polychaete Hydroides elegans (Haswell) is induced by certain bacteria in marine biofilms. The exact nature of the settlement cue that larvae of H. elegans receive from these bacteria remains unknown. In this study, we revealed some properties of the bacterially derived larval settlement cue by investigating the larval settlement inductive activity of two bacterial strains after various treatments. These two bacterial strains, Roseobacter sp. and an α-subclass Proteobacteria, are highly inductive to larval settlement of H. elegans. The larvae responded similarly to Roseobacter and Proteobacteria in all the larval settlement bioassays, suggesting that the larval settlement-inducing substances produced by these bacteria may share common characteristics. First of all, the larvae did not settle in the seawater conditioned by the bacteria attached as a film or by the bacteria that were freely suspended in seawater. The results suggest that the putative larval settlement cue is not released into seawater and, therefore, should be associated with the surface of the bacteria. Secondly, formaldehyde treatment entirely eliminated the larval settlement induction activity of the bacterial films, and streptomycin treatment reduced the percentage of larval settlement on the bacterial films in a concentration-dependent manner. Since both treatments can kill bacteria with little damage to the surface chemistry of bacterial cells, the decline in larval settlement is suggested be due to a reduction of the viable bacterial population in the bacterial films. In fact, the reduction of larval settlement in the streptomycin treatments coincided with the decrease in viable bacterial populations in broth cultures containing respective concentrations of streptomycin. These results suggest that the viability of Roseobacter and Proteobacteria is important to their settlement induction effect. Since the larval settlement induction activity of the bacterial strains appears to correlate with their viability, we suggest that the putative larval settlement cue is derived from a metabolic pathway in the bacteria and that the cue is exported to and concentrated at the extracellular polymer matrix of the bacterial cell, at which the larvae establish contact with the bacteria. The larval settlement cue may be highly susceptible to degradation so that a metabolically active bacterial film is needed to maintain the putative cue at a concentration that surpasses the threshold for induction of larval settlement. Ostrea edulis larvae from an adult stock maintained in a raft in the Ría of Arousa (Galicia, Spain), were cultured in 1988 under four different food regimes:Pavlova lutheri, Isochrysis galbana, Phaeodactylum tricornutum andSkeletonema costatum. Growth, mortality, percentage of eyed larvae in each tank, as well as the biochemical composition of larvae at different stages of development were also studied. Protein and carbohydrate levels increase during larval development. Total lipids also increase from liberation to Day 8, and increase slightly or decrease from Day 8 to the beginning of metamorphosis. Since lipids are the main energy reserve in larvae, it is very plausible that they are being consumed during development, especially when metamorphosis begins. Data on growth, survival and biochemical composition of these larvae, which spawned 4 d after transfer of parental stock to the conditioning circuit, are compared with unpublished data on larvae from a laboratory conditioned broodstock.  相似文献
