Seagrass and algal beds showed a variety of reponses when the water column was treated with low level additions of ammonium, nitrate and phosphate. The nutrients were added separately to 3 uniform seagrass beds of a temperature coastal lagoon during 1979 and 1980. (1) Ammonium caused the production of dense mats of free-floating green algae Enteromorpha plumosa and Ulva lactuca. It also stimulated growth in both the leaf and root-rhizome fractions of Zostera marina. This growth response in Z. marina was greater in the area where current reached 12 cm · s-1 than in the area with little or no current. The concentration of nitrogen in the tissue did not change. In contrast, where current was lacking, Z. marina growth increase with ammonium was small, but the concentration of nitrogen in the tissue doubled over that in control plots. The growth of Ruppia maritima was inversely related to the growth of green algae in the same plots. The red alga Gracilaria tikvahiae did not grow better in ammonium, but its tissue reddened. (2) Nitrate additions enhanced the growth of the green seaweeds Enteromorpha spp. and U. lactuca, but not Z. marina or R. maritima. G. tikvahiae, when fertilized in isolation from other plants, showed a marginal response to this nutrient, and the tissue always reddened. (3) Phosphate enhanced growth in Z. marina and R. maritima exposed to moderate current. G. tikvahiae growing alone showed a small growth response to phosphate. The phosphate made no difference in the growth of the green seaweeds. (4) None of the nutrient supplements noticeably altered the species composition of either epiphytic or planktonic algae associated with the beds, although we did detect small increases in their numbers. The rapid and dense growth of green algae in nitrogen-enriched water probably limited growth of adjacent seagrasses and red algae. Because these seaweeds did not use the phosphate, it became available to other plant components. The overall floral response to nutrient addition in seagrass communities depends, therefore, upon the particular nutrient supplied, the ability of alternate species in the area to compete for that nutrient and the velocity of current in the specific area. 相似文献

Sea otter, Enhydra lutris, predation had no detectable effect on abundance and size distribution of deep-burrowing bivalve prey in the Elkhorn Slough, California, USA. Up to 23 otters were present for 6 mo of the study period (March 1984 through April 1985). This is in contrast to previous studies of sea otter predation, especially on the shallow-burrowing Pismo clam Tivela stultorum, which can be found along the wave-exposed coast near the slough. The deep-burrowing clams Tresus nuttallii and Saxidomus nuttalli made up 61% of the prey taken in the slough, and are more difficult for otters to excavate than Pismo clams. The occurrence of foraging otters was highest in an area where the two bivalve prey were extremely abundant (18 individuals m–2). However, the otters did not selectively prey on the largest clams available within the study sight, but foraged preferentially in a patch of smaller individuals where bivalve burrow depth was restricted by the presence of a dense clay layer. This foraging strategy maximized the amount of prey biomass obtained per unit volume of sediment excavated. Our findings suggest that in soft-sediment habitats deep-burrowing bivalves may be more resistant to otter predation than shallower burrowers. 相似文献

Coastal biodiversity is threatened worldwide by both direct and indirect anthropogenic activities. To more effectively manage and protect coastal biodiversity, accurate assessments of genetic, species, and ecosystem level diversity are required. We present the results from an assessment of the aquatic species diversity of a small (3?km2), shallow, mangrove-fringed Bahamian lagoon (the North Sound) subject to ongoing anthropogenic development. The assessment was conducted through a collation of field observations and data in published literature. We found that eight angiosperm species, 30 macroalgal species, and 370 animal species (including 95 fishes, 69 arthropods, 56 birds, and 45 mollusks) were documented within the lagoon. At least 11 of these species are of conservation concern, such as the critically endangered smalltooth sawfish (Pristis pectinata) and hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata). Comparisons of community similarity indicated that the North Sound has a relatively distinct fauna and flora, but available data suggest that the species found there are most similar to those found in nearby habitats in Cuba. The lagoon forms a key nursery habitat for many species, including lemon sharks (Negaprion brevirostris), Caribbean spiny lobsters (Panulirus argus), and queen conch (Strombas gigas). Recently, the lagoon was included as part of a new marine protected area (MPA), but much of the habitat has already experienced considerable anthropogenic disturbance and the MPA boundaries have yet to be established. We have therefore analyzed the lagoon biodiversity and expect the data presented here to serve as a baseline for future comparisons. 相似文献

In inshore waters around Malta, Bonellia viridis inhabit burrows with multiple exits in calcareous rocks, and are most abundant in areas bordering Posidonia oceanica meadows. The associated epiflora and fauna are typical of the Mediterranean hard-substrate infralittoral zone. The larger infaunal species associated with B. viridis include a poriferan, Cliona sp.; an unidentified nemertean worm; various polychaetes; the sipunculans Phascolosoma granulatum and Aspidosiphon muelleri; two species of molluscs-Lithophaga lithophaga and Lepidopleurus cajetanus; 8 species of decapod crustaceans; and the teleost Gobius geniporus. Four types of burrows are found in rocks containing B. viridis. The larger burrows (referred to herein as UBA burrows) contain 3 main species-the decapods Upogebia deltaura and Alpheus dentipes and B. viridis itself. Experimental evidence suggests that U. deltaura excavates the UBA burrows mechanically, although B. viridis may secondarily modify them by secretion of an acidic mucus and gentle mechanical action. There is a definite community of organisms living as commensals in the burrow of U. deltaura. The assemblage of organisms bears a striking parallelism to the assemblages inhabiting the burrows of species of Upogebia, Callianassa and the echiuran Urechis caupo of the Pacific coast of N. America. A food web for the UBA burrow community is suggested. 相似文献

The Baja California Peninsula is considered México's most productive in terms of commercial fisheries. Very few quantitative assessments of the economic importance of this region exist, especially considering artisanal fisheries and their relationships with ecological data. Datasets from government records on shrimp capture in Magdalena Bay, an arid coastal lagoon of Baja California Sur were collected, analysed and correlated with ecological data. Over the 10-year period analysed, fisheries from Magdalena Bay made up 27.5% of the shrimp capture of the state, contributing over US$15.5 million to the economy of the country. The impressive value of this resource warrants considerable attention in the design of land-use plans for the future of the region. Analysis of ecological and economical data on shrimp fishery activities in the Magdalena Bay region enables us to propose recommendations to enhance the sustainable development of the local inhabitants. A thorough assessment of the potential value of alternative economic activities should be conducted to determine their potential to provide similar productive use of the natural resources of the region as the shrimp fishery. Also, from a more specific management viewpoint, harvest rates of small shrimp in the channels should be reduced. 相似文献

Abundance of the eelgrass Zostera marina L. was studied in a coastal lagoon in southern California (USA), and was found to correlate with the level of irradiance at depths greater than 0.5 m below tidal datum. Results of controlled field experiments, using canopies to reduce downwelling illuminance by 63%, confirmed that turion density is a function of the irradiance the plants receive. By Day 18 of the experiment, turion density in the shaded experimental areas had decreased compared to the density of adjacent unshaded controls. Turion densities were continually lower throughout the 9-month study in the experimental areas, which at the end of the study had a turion density only 5% that of the control areas. Flowering in the experimental areas was also inhibited by shading. The biological implications of these findings are discussed with respect to seasonal changes in incident solar radiation, water transparency, and changes in water quality due to man's increased intervention in the natural processes of coastal lagoons.Contribution No. 4 from the Center for Marine Studies, San Diego State University, San Diego, California 92182, USA. 相似文献

In order to understand the relationships between the dynamics of phytoplankton populations in the surface microlayer (MIL)
and in the water column below (SSW), this study used high-performance liquid chromatography-derived pigment markers in samples
from a coastal lagoon of Baja California (Estero de Punta Banda, EPB) under summer (October 2003) and winter (December 2003)
conditions. Photosynthetic pigment signatures of phytoplankton at the air–sea interface (phytoneuston) and subsurface measurements
were related to bottom-up (temperature, salinity, nutrient concentrations) and top-down factors (zooplankton abundance). Slicks
and scum layers were observed in the inner part of the lagoon and coincided with greater stratification of layers just below
the sea surface and lower wind intensities. In general, spatial variability in pigment markers and ancillary data was very
high and resulted in non-significant differences between MIL and subsurface samples when different regions of EPB or sampling
dates were compared. However, different patterns were found between pigments and environmental factors of MIL and SSW samples
when the relative numbers of stations with positive and negative differences (ΔX = X
MIL−X
SSW) were computed. For each survey, pigment markers of phytoneuston and phytoplankton samples were not necessarily correlated.
Further analysis revealed that those markers (19′-butanoyloxyfucoxanthin, prasinoxanthin, divinil-chlorophyll a) corresponded to picophytoplankton groups (haptophyte, prasinophyte, and prochlorophyte). On both dates, the MIL was enriched
in 19′-hexanoyloxyfucoxanthin (a marker for a type 4 haptophyte) and fucoxanthin (marker for bacillariophytes, haptophytes,
and crysophytes) and depleted in peridinin (marker for dinophytes). Different zooplankton grazers accumulated in the MIL (loricate
tintinnids) and in SSW (copepod nauplii). 相似文献

The Piratininga Lagoon is a coastal, choked, and brackish ecosystem in SE Brazil, where uncontrolled discharge of domestic sewage led to eutrophication, increasing massive proliferation of benthic macroalgae, and decrease of the lagoon mean depth. In 1992, a dam was constructed by the local Municipality at its tidal channel aiming at stabilising its water level. Main physico-chemical parameters, together with macroalgae biomass, nutrient concentrations in the water column, particulate organic carbon, and chlorophyll a were recorded monthly at 4 sampling stations within the Piratininga lagoon from April 1994 to April 1995. The data, compared with “before-lock” existing studies, show that nutrients and chlorophyll a concentrations significantly increased after the lock construction. Based on the functioning of the ecosystem, we propose to harvest the algal mats before their decomposition period in order to partly remove the nutrient stocks from the lagoon and the future ecosystem modelling to predict the impact of natural and anthropogenic eutrophication. 相似文献

Sexual reproduction in Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile is likely to be highly variable both in space and time. However, there has been little effort to identify at what spatial scale variability exists in the distribution and abundance of reproductive shoots or the magnitude of these variations. Such information is important for elucidating several aspects of the reproductive strategy of this species. Here, by using a reconstructing technique, I estimated the rate at which flowering events occurred over the last decades in three P. oceanica meadows along the coastline of the north-western Mediterranean (Italy). Then, variation in inflorescence frequency (i.e. the percentage of shoots that flowered in a particular year of the total number of shoots present in the sample in that year) was examined on a hierarchy of spatial scales, ranging from a few metres to meadows separated by tens of kilometres over a 3-year period. Separate analyses were also conducted to examine the patterns of spatial variability of several plant characteristics (i.e. shoot age and density of vegetative shoots) that may influence the timing of flowering. In total, ten reconstructed flowering events were recorded during the period 1983–1999. Despite the similar climatic conditions experienced in the three meadows surveyed, no inflorescence scars were found in one meadow. In the other two meadows, the flowering rate fluctuated considerably from year to year (0–26%), and simultaneous flowerings were detected only in 3 years (1993, 1994 and 1995). The pattern of spatial variability in the inflorescence frequency varied among years. An investigation of the flowering events recorded along the north-western Mediterranean coast reveals that in the studied period flowering also occurred across a broad range of meadows. Therefore, flowering could be a far more widespread phenomenon in this sector of the Mediterranean basin than previously thought. Analysis of variance showed significant variation in 1993 at the mean inflorescence frequency on very small scales (metres to tens of metres), whereas variation was not found at any of the scales investigated in 1994 and 1995. Overall, variation in the inflorescence frequency within individual meadows (65–93%) was at least an order of magnitude greater than that among separate meadows (0.5–19%). Patterns of spatial variation in the plant characteristics examined did not reflect those of flowering. It may be hypothesised that internal rhythms of populations, in conjunction with changes in environmental conditions, which are consistent over relatively large spatial (kilometres), are involved in the control of flowering induction. Environmental heterogeneity (in terms of nutrient availability) on a very local scale (metres to tens of metres) and intrinsic factors might affect the distribution of reproductive shoots within P. oceanica meadows.Communicated by R. The effect of solar UV radiation (UVR: 290–400 nm) on the 32P-phosphate uptake rates of natural phytoplankton from a southern Atlantic Ocean coastal lagoon was studied during two consecutive summers at one station located in the marine-influenced area. Due to the shallowness of this lagoon and also to the generally high UV water transparency in this area, phytoplankton are exposed to high UV irradiances. The 32P-phosphate uptake rates measured at several phosphate concentrations were inhibited up to 59.2% by UVR, although uptake stimulation was also observed in four of nine experiments (up to 28%). The effect of UVR on the apparent maximum velocity of 32P-phosphate uptake (V
uptake) ranged from an inhibition of 49% to a stimulation of 31%. Although the highest inhibition values were associated with the maximum registered incident UV irradiance, a significant correlation between these two parameters was not observed. Changes in microalgal community structure were not related to the observed UV effect; however, a significant relationship was found between the inhibition of 32P-phosphate uptake rates and V
uptake used as a proxy for phosphate deficiency. This relationship suggests that the phytoplankton phosphorus nutritional status modulates their sensitivity to UV exposure. Overall, our results suggest that solar UVR has the potential to affect phosphorus cycling.Communicated by O. Kinne, Oldendorf/Luhe 相似文献

Fishery resource management in Chilika lagoon: a study on coastal conservation in the Eastern Coast of India 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A significant proportion of the fishing population comprises small-scale fishermen and many studies illustrate that these
people are exploited by middlemen in the process of fish marketing combined with money lending. The negative dependency gives
rise to poverty and triggers indiscriminate fish catch that threatens fishery resources depletion. This article explores the
root causes of failures in resource-led development from the viewpoint of coastal resource conservation. The study presents
a case study of Chilika lagoon, India and focuses on the interaction between small-scale fishermen and middlemen. The findings
reveal that most of the small-scale fishermen have been exploited by specific middlemen and the underlying causes of the present
fish marketing structure stem from (i) indebtedness and (ii) the unstable situation because of perpetual conflicts over fishery
resources among the fishers across Chilika lagoon. Based on these observations, this article presents some recommendations
on fishery resource conservation from the perspective of a fish marketing structure.

Nitrogen inputs to coastal environments can considerably alter the abundance of primary producers. However, how herbivores
modify their trophic signatures and adjust to changes in food resource conditions remains controversial. Here, we assess the
effect of nutrient availability on the diet shifts of the two main Mediterranean herbivores, the Sparid fish Sarpa salpa L. and the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus (Lmk.) that feed mostly on the seagrass Posidonia oceanica L. (Delile), epiphytes and benthic macroalgae. To do this, we (1) investigate the patterns of isotopic composition (δ13C and δ15N signatures) of the two herbivores and their potential food sources in three areas of contrasting nutrient conditions and,
(2) we assess the diet shift along this nutrient gradient by estimating the isotopic nutrient enrichment (i.e., the contribution
of δ13C and δ15N signatures in consumers’ tissues relative to potential food sources). Food web signatures of δ13C were similar among the three study sites, and no patterns of δ13C shift were observed in their diets. In contrast, there was a consistent increase in N contents and δ15N along the nutrient gradient for all primary producers and their consumers. The rate of δ15N enrichment was also clearly distinctive between the two herbivores: in P. lividus it increased by 61% along the nutrient gradient, while in S. salpa it remained constant. Our results suggest that sea urchins behave as facultative omnivores and feed on vegetable or mixed
diets depending on the trophic status of the system. It is unclear, however, if this modification is behavioral or the consequence
of mere changes in the availability of food items, as animal epiphytes (e.g., hydrozoans, bryozoans and ascidians) can also
became more abundant on seagrass leaves under increased nutrient conditions. In contrast, adult fish appear to feed on vegetal
material independent of nutrient availability in the ecosystem. 相似文献

Summary The influence of vole cycles on the demography, spatial organization, and abundance of potential rodent competitors was studied in three California rodents in the laboratory and in the field. Population densities ofMicrotus californicus were inversely correlated with reproductive success in two potential competitors (Reithrodontomys megalotis andMus musculus). Additionally, high-density vole populations forced these species into suboptimal habitats. During low-density vole populations,Reithrodontomys andMus left their refugia, expanded their usage of habitat, were more active, and their reproductive success was greater. Thus, this work suggests that during vole population peaks, competition with sympatric species of mice is severe. Conversely, when vole populations decline, competition is relaxed. The temporal and spatial organization of the three-species complex supports models of nonequilibrium and fugitive species coexistence. 相似文献

We document and analyse the implementation process of a large combined coastal protection realignment and nature protection rewetting scheme, covering about 1000 ha at the German Baltic coast. The assessment reviews local planning documents, includes a media analysis, a tourist survey, stakeholder interviews and we provide criteria for measuring success, derived from the Systems Approach Framework (SAF) concept. The full process in the Geltinger Birk took over 25 years and was finished in 2013. The early years were characterised by strong local opposition, a polarization of the local society, misinformation and negative media coverage. Land purchase, the establishment of a local information centre with an environmental manager, improved public participation, a more pro-active media strategy and the readiness to accept compromises finally enabled a successful implementation. Today, a comprehensive tourism information and guidance system exists and the area became a popular tourist place. 80% of all visitors point out the outstanding nature experience and 87% are positive about the combined coastal protection and restoration measure. Parallel, major stakeholders changed their attitude and today are positive about the situation. However, the long timespan between initiation of the process and implementation of the measure, calls for a systematic, guided management approach, like the SAF. Especially, because climate change, sea level rise and increasing pressures on the coasts require a much faster implementation of adaptation measures in future. 相似文献

Rates of sulfate reduction were measured during the spring dry and summer wet seasons of 1992 in shallow coastal sediments of the central Great Barrier Reef lagoon. In the dry season, sulfate reduction rates, integrated to 18–20 cm depth, ranged from 23.8 to 30.8 mmol S m-2 d-1. In the wet season, heavy monsoonal rains and wind-induced waves caused severe disturbance of sediments leading to less anoxic conditions, and to a 2- to 3-fold decline in rates of sulfate reduction (10.2 to 12.8 mmol S m-2 d-1). The percentage of reduced 35S recovered as acid-volatile sulfide (% AVSred) ranged from 15.8 to 44.9% in spring, and was significantly reduced at each station in summer (range 14.5 to 31.4%). An analysis of variance indicated that seasonality accounted for 31.5% of the total variance in total rates of sulfate reduction, with only 7.5% of the variance accounted for by depth into the sediment; there were no station differences. In both seasons, there were no clear patterns in the proportion of radiolabel incorporated into the AVS and chromium-reducible sulfur (CRS) pools with depth into the sediment. These results are contrary to the seasonal patterns and pathways of sulfate reduction in temperate coastal sediments. 相似文献

This paper examines the influence of dune morphological evolution on plant species diversity and composition on the Magheramore dune system, Donegal, north-west Ireland. It aims to demonstrate the need for understanding of local geomorphological factors and their affect on ecological processes for the enhanced conservation management of coastal dunes. Vegetation surveys and cluster analysis of species associations, in combination with GIS analysis focused on two prograding dune sites within the Magheramore system. Contrasting geomorphic evolution over similar timescales has imposed site-specific environmental conditions that have had a direct impact on the range of plant species communities present. Cluster analysis revealed 5 main species community types that defined specific dune habitats, the organisation of which is strongly influenced by geomorphic evolution. This study demonstrates the importance of geomorphic evolution and morphological heterogeneity in habitat and species diversity. 相似文献
