The life history and reproductive biology of the trochid sand snail Umbonium costatum (Kiener) were investigated on a subtidal sandy shore in Hakodate Bay, Japan between 1988 and 1991. Female U. costatum mature at 1 yr of age (shell diameter-11 mm), reproduce twice (in June-July and September-October) in successive years, grow to a maximum size (shell diameter=22 mm) at age 8 yr, increase annual fecundity with age from 2000 (age 1 yr) to 37000 (age 8 yr), and show a maximum monthly gonad somatic index of 8% which is constant among ages. In comparison to a previously studied life history of a tropical Umbonium vestiatium, temperate U. costatum shows more sustained growth and a longer life span after maturation. This could be explained by: (1) the optimal size model concerned with resource investment, in gametes (Sebens 1987); and by (2) bet hedging to compensate large variability in larval success at high latitudes. These two hypotheses are not mutually exclusive, but both are based on season-related extremes of environment at high latitudes where the period suitable for reproduction is short.  相似文献

The influence of salinity, temperature and prey availability on the marine migration of anadromous fishes was determined by describing the movements, habitat use and feeding behaviours of Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus). The objectives were to determine whether char are restricted to the upper water column of the inter-/subtidal zones due to warmer temperatures. Twenty-seven char were tracked with acoustic temperature/pressure (depth) transmitters from June to September, 2008/2009, in inner Frobisher Bay, Canada. Most detections were in surface waters (0–3 m). Inter-/subtidal movements and consecutive repetitive dives (maximum 52.8 m) resulted in extreme body temperature shifts (−0.2–18.1 °C). Approximately half of intertidal and subtidal detections were between 9–13 °C and 1–3 °C, respectively. Stomach contents and deep diving suggested feeding in both inter-/subtidal zones. We suggest that char tolerate cold water at depth to capture prey in the subtidal zone, then seek warmer water to enhance feeding/digestion physiology.  相似文献

Larvae of marine organisms often need specific resources or environments at settlement, and their success at settlement might be strongly influenced by the abundance and distribution of such specific resources. The larvae of hermit crabs need small shells to settle, so it is thought that the distribution and abundance of small shells influence the settlement pattern of hermit crabs. To investigate the influence of small shell distribution on the settlement of pagurid hermit crab larvae, we conducted a field experiment at an intertidal rocky shore in Hakodate Bay, Japan. From the line-transect sampling in the field, we found that Pagurus middendorffii settled extensively in the offshore side of the intertidal zone while P. nigrofascia settled in the uppermost area of the intertidal zone. Small shells were most abundant in a narrow shallow trough, slightly offshore from the uppermost area of the intertidal zone. For both species, settler abundance was high where adults were abundant, but settler abundance did not appear to be related to shells abundance. An experiment to clarify settlement patterns showed that larval recruits tended to be similar to those in the line-transect sampling of settlers. Thus shells may not be a primary factor affecting settlement patterns at relatively large scale within the intertidal flat. However, when we analyzed the relationship of settlers and shells separately within each transect, the distribution of settlers was well explained by shell resource availability. Therefore on a smaller scale, shell availability may influence the number of settlers. Settlement periods of P. middendorffii and P. nigrofascia fully overlapped, so their larvae probably were affected by similar transport factors, such as current and tidal movement. Nevertheless they showed different spatial patterns of settlement.Communicated by T. Ikeda, Hakodate  相似文献

The spatial and temporal distributions of two island-associated copepod species, Undinula vulgaris Dana and Labidocera madurae Scott, were compared to the distributions of two open ocean species, Cosmocalanus darwinii Lubbock and Scolecithrix danae Lubbock, along 28-km windward and leeward transects off the island of Oahu, Hawaii. Samples were taken in September and December 1985 and April and June 1986. A warm, low salinity pool on the leeward side was a prominent feature during all transects except December. The abundances of the two oceanic species did not change significantly between leeward and windward stations, with distance from shore, or between September 1985 and April 1986 samples. As expected, very high abundances of U. vulgaris occurred at some nearshore stations, up to 3 g dry wt m−2 for adults alone. Calculations of respiratory loss at these densities (0.7 g C m−2 d−1) suggest a high local productivity would be required to meet these demands. L. madurae, a surface-dwelling species normally restricted to within 1 km of shore, was an effective indicator species of nearshore water movement. It was more common in offshore samples on the leeward transects, rarely being found offshore on the windward side, consistent with prevailing currents and the presence of the leeward warm, low salinity pool. The occurrence of a strong mixing event in April 1986 resulted in L. madurae being distributed throughout the upper 100 m of the water column. The presence of oceanic species close to shore on the windward side also coincided with this wind-driven event. The primary environmental influence on vertical distributions was daytime cloud cover, with U. vulgaris tending to be found shallower on cloudy days. Of the two oceanic species, S. danae exhibited the most pronounced vertical migration, however, vertical distributions were not significantly correlated with environmental factors for either species. The abundant nearshore U. vulgaris population cannot be explained by differences in vertical distribution between it and the two oceanic species that might allow a physical mechanism to concentrate U. vulgaris. A high population growth rate is likely necessary to explain U. vulgaris' dominance. Received: 26 June 1998 / Accepted: 31 March 1999  相似文献

The net photosynthesis of intertidal, subtidal, carposporic, tetrasporic, and winter versus summer acclimatized plants of Chondrus crispus Stackhouse were evaluated under different temperatures and quantities of light. The optimum temperature and light conditions for net photosynthesis of C. crispus are seasonally and spatially variable, and there is an adaptive shift in the photosynthetic capacity at different seasons and positions on the shore. Plants collected during the fall and winter had lower light optima (465 to 747 ft-c) for net photosynthesis than spring and summer specimens (about 1000 ft-c). Intertidal populations exhibited a higher rate of net photosynthesis between 250 and 2819 ft-c than subtidal plants. Summer materials have a greater tolerance to high temperatures and a higher temperature optimum than winter materials. Shallow subtidal populations (-6m) exhibited a higher temperature optimum than deep subtidal plants (-12m). Tetrasporic plants (diploid) showed a higher rate of net photosynthesis than carposporic plants (haploid). It is suggested that the diploid plants of C. crispus may extend deeper in the subtidal zone, because they have a higher rate of net photosynthesis than carposporic plants. The results of the present studies are compared with previous physiological studies of C. crispus.Published with the approval of the Director of the New Hampshire Agriculture Experiment Station as Scientific Contribution Number 742.  相似文献

The seasonal photosynthetic responses and daily carbon gain of upper intertidal, low intertidal and subtidal (3 to 4 m depth) populations ofColpomenia peregrina were examined over a 2 yr period (1986–1988) in Santa Catalina Island, California, USA. The populations showed significant differences in their photosynthetic responses, daily carbon balance and carbon-specific growth rates when normalized to tissue area or to chlorophyll content. The substantial plasticity with respect to photosynthetic responses shown byC. peregrina is considered to be an important factor in facilitating the colonization of both intertidal and subtidal habitats. This species appears to have a cellular carbon metabolism influenced by responses to season and tidal elevation. Highest net daily carbon balance, predicted carbonspecific growth rates and net growth efficiency were achieved in upper intertidal habitats during summer. These parameters decreased in winter and progressively declined with increasing depth as plants become increasingly exposed to low-light regimes. The diminishing net daily carbon balance and predicted carbon-specific field growth rates found during winter suggest that standing stock and lower subtidal limits of distribution ofC. peregrina are at least partly controlled by these two factors.  相似文献

The microphytoplankton assemblages were studied from water samples collected at eight discrete depths in the top 120 m at five central (open ocean) and four western (shelf/slope region) locations in the Bay of Bengal. The Bay is a low-productive warm pool regime with poor inorganic nutrient inputs to its intensely stratified surface layer despite the very large riverine influx. In addition, the prolonged cloud cover has an adverse effect on the top 25–40 m, on primary production, chlorophyll concentration and phytoplankton assemblages. Microphytoplankton were the most abundant in the northern area of the Bay. A total of 153 phytoplankton species were identified during this study. The most abundant species (at least 1,800 individual cells belonging to a given species or ≥2% of the total counts of identified specimens) during this study were: Thalassiothrix longissima, Thalassiothrix fauenfeldii, Rhizosolenia styliformis, Nitzschia angularis, Thalassionema nitzschioides, Coscinodiscus radiatus, Chaetoceros eibenii, Skeletonema costatum, Coscinodiscus concinnus and Chaetoceros coarctatus. Similarly, there were 20 moderately abundant (≥0.5 but <2%) species. Thirty-three of the least abundant species (<0.5%) occurred at one station. Diatom species, T. fauenfeldii and T. longissima were ubiquitous in the study area. The exclusive occurrence of S. costatum in the northernmost stations suggests that it proliferates only in the low-salinity regions with adequate silica from the land inputs. Abundance of pennate diatoms was higher in the open Bay compared to that of centric diatoms in the more productive northern locations and the western Bay. There appears to be a basic difference between near shore flora and offshore flora. This first analysis of phytoplankton assemblages from the offshore Bay suggests that while there is predominance of only a few species, the Bay harbors very diverse diatom communities that seem to be syntrophic, non-competitive and co-habiting in the generally low nutrient, stratified surface waters.  相似文献

A major recruitment of the forcipulate asteroid Pisaster ochraceus was observed in September 1987 in the channel leading into Boca del Infierno, a semi-enclosed bay on the southeastern shore of Nootka Island, on the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Newly settled recruits were observed at high densities subtidally in the channel (mean maximal density=1.23x104m-2) and at nearby sites. Subsequent surveys in 1988 to 1991 and size-frequency distributions of adults indicated strong yearly recruitment of P. ochraceus. Recruits of P. ochraceus were found on all available substrata, including hard and soft bottoms and on benthic algae. The initial food of the recruits included newly settled mussels (Mytilus sp.), snails and barnacles. Recruitment of the forcipulate Pycnopodia helianthoides was observed in 1987 to 1989 and in 1991, while recruitment of the spinulosan Dermasterias imbricata occurred only in 1988. High densities of planktonic bipinnaria larvae were found in the bay of Boca del Infierno in late May. We hypothesise that the high density population of adult P. ochraceus found in the channel of Boca del Infierno spawns synchronously and most of the resulting embryos and larvae are retained within the bay. This area may act as a source of larvae that then disperse locally. Post-recruitment mortality was estimated by comparing the density of recruits of P. ochraceus in 1987 with the numbers of juveniles presumed to be 1 yr old in 1988. Post-recruitment mortality was in excess of 97% with few individuals surviving to 1 yr. Moreover, even after the first year, mortality or emigration of the juveniles resulted in the almost complete loss of the 1-yr cohort at North Saavedra between 1988 and 1989. This study provides evidence that the P. ochraceus population in this area of Nootka Island may not be open, but may be regularly supplied from a source of larvae in the bay of Boca del Infierno. Post-settlement processes may, however, have significant effects on the local population, resulting in a poor correlation between the rate of recruitment and the incorporation of yr-1 + individuals into the adult population.  相似文献

In this work, we investigated photosynthetic gas exchange responses of the red alga Acanthophora najadiformis (collected in 1991 from a shore near Netanya, Israel) to heating, light, inorganic carbon and desiccation of the thalli. This was done to elucidate some of the contributing causes for its particular restricted vertical distribution within the lower intertidal zone of the Israeli Mediterranean rocky shore. In contrast to other common intertidal species, the photosynthetic performance of A. najadiformis was very sensitive to desiccation and to high temperature, and these factors may thus prevent the alga from growing above the surge zone. On the other hand, this species photosynthesized five times faster in air than in water (provided it was kept highly hydrated), and this may be the reason why it does not succeed in competing with other algae in the subtidal which use HCO 3 - more efficiently. This paper is in partial fulfillment of a Ph.D. study by R. Ingestion and egg production by Acartia hudsonica (5°C) and A. tonsa (10°C) from Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, USA, was measured in the laboratory over a range of concentrations of the prymnesiophyte Phaeocystis pouchetii and the diatom Skeletonema costatum. Both Acartia species reproduced well when fed unialgal diets of S. costatum. Egg production by females fed P. pouchetii, either as gelatioous colonies (primarily >200 m in diameter) or solitary cells (3 to 5 m), was not significantly different than that of starved females. Acartia spp. fed selectively on S. costatum in multialgal treatments. The presence of P. pouchetii did not reduce ingestion of S. costatum; the availability of S. costatum did not increase ingestion of P. pouchetii. Nauplii of A. hudsonica grew equally well on separate diets of P. pouchetii and Isochrysis galbana, two flagellates of similar size. Adult Acartia spp. reproduced poorly when fed these phytoplankton, suggesting that particle size may be more important than food quality in describing the responses. Grazing by Acartia spp. does not directly impact the dynamics of P. pouchetii, but may indirectly contribute to blooms of this prymnesiophyte by removal of competing phytoplankton.  相似文献

Using a hand dredge, a population of Cassidulus mitis Krau, 1954 was sampled monthly from February 1986 to January 1987 at 15 stations offshore from Vermelha Beach (22°5718 S; 43°948 W), in water depths ranging from 0 to 6 m. The sex ratio indicated a slight numerical dominance of females for adults and a larger numerical female dominance for juveniles. A von Bertalanffy growth curve was estimated as L=71.00 (1-e(-0.390t)), where L=length (mm) and t=time (yr). The instantaneous natural mortality rate (M) was estimated as 0.812. The population occupies a zone parallel to the beach, and displays a spatially aggregated pattern, with higher densities in areas characterized by coarse and very well sorted sand containing low amounts of organic matter.  相似文献

The ontogenetic diel vertical migration of the planktonic copepod Calanus sinicus was investigated in the Inland Sea of Japan in June 1989, when the water column was thermally weakly stratified. Because of fewer eggs and less variation in their abundance, nocturnal spawning was not apparent. A pronounced upward migration occurred in NIII. NIII to CIII resided in the upper 20 m layer throughout the day, and from CIV on their median depths descended. CV and adult females underwent significant diel vertical migration, whereas adult males did not migrate. By integrating the results from the present study and those from our previous investigations (in August–September 1988, November 1988 and March 1989), we review seasonal variation in the ontogenetic diel vertical migration of C. sinicus. Spawning was largely nocturnal, reaching its maximum level around dawn, but spawning depth and fecundity changed seasonally. The distribution of pre-feeding stages, NI and NII, was similar to that of eggs. A pronounced upward migration always occurred in the first feeding stage, NIII, and late nauplii and early copepodites always resided in the food-rich upper layer, indicating that upward migration by NIII is feeding migration. As the stages progressed, they extended their vertical distribution range, and CV and adult females usually underwent diel vertical migration. However, the pattern and strength of this migration differed seasonally. Their day depths increased with the increase of relative biomass of planktivorous fish, indicating that predator avoidance induces their diurnal downward migration. High chlorophyll a concentrations in the upper layer (<15 m deep) relative to the lower layer (>20 m deep) amplified their diel vertical migrations. Diel vertical migration of C. sinicus is a phenotypic behavior.  相似文献

Studies off the west coast of Australia showed that the phyllosoma larvae of Panulirus cygnus George undergo a diurnal vertical migration, with light as an important factor influencing the depth distribution of all 9 phyllosoma stages. The early stages (I to III) occurred at the surface at night regardless of moonlight intensity, whereas late stages (VI to IX) concentrated at the surface only on nights with less than 5% of full moonlight. Midday peak densities of early-stage larvae occurred in the 30 to 60 m depth range while those of mid (IV to VI) and late stages were in the 50 to 120 m range. Depths of peak densities of larvae increased with distance offshore. The limits of vertical distribution of the phyllosoma remained within ranges of illuminance which were estimated to be in the order of 50 to 250 E m-2 sec-1 for early stages, 20 to 200 E m-2 sec-1 for mid stages and 5 to 50 E m-2 sec-1 for late stages. Minimal rates of net vertical movement were estimated for the larvae. Early stages exhibited mean net rates of ascent and descent of 13.7 and 13.0 m h-1, respectively, while the rates for mid stages were 16.0 and 16.6 m h-1 and for late stages 19.4 and 20.1 m h-1. Diurnal migrations and vertical distribution are shown to have a vital role in the relationships between circulation in the south-eastern Indian Ocean and the transport and dispersal of the phyllosoma larvae. The diurnal migrations of early stages place them at the surface at night, when offshore vectors of wind-driven ocean-surface transport dominate, and below the depth of wind-induced transport during the day, when offshore vectors are small or negative, thus accounting for their offshore displacement. Mid and late stages, because of their deeper daytime distribution and absence from the surface on moonlight nights, are predominantly subject to circulation features underlying the immediate surface layer. This is hypothesized to account for the return of the phyllosoma to areas near the continental shelf edge by subjecting them to a coastward mass transport of water which underlies the immediate surface layer. The western rock lobster is referred to as P. longipes or P. longipes cygnus in some of the literature quoted; these are synonymous with P. cygnus.  相似文献

Physical (temperature and salinity) and biological (zooplankton) properties were sampled over a 15 mo period in 1988 and 1989 to monitor nearshore environmental variability in northern Monterey Bay, California, USA. During the upwelling seasons of 1988 and 1989, there were two distinct bodies of water along the sampling transect. The offshore water body was characterized by recently upwelled water (typically <12°C) while the nearshore body was significantly warmer (approaching 16°C). A sharp thermal gradient (=front) separated the two water bodies. This front persisted 6.5 km from shore throughout the upwelling season of 1988 and was present again in 1989. Zooplankton-assemblage analysis confirmed the presence of two distinct regions in northern Monterey Bay. We refer to this phenomenon as an upwelling shadow, which is the result of the advection of recently upwelled water bearing nutrients and larvae past coastal recesses which are equatorward of upwelling centers.  相似文献

Marked and recovered surf clams, Spisula solidissima Dillwyn, from Virginia (USA) deposited one internal growth line during a period of 11/2 years, probably in response to spawning during late summer. We have used these annual growth lines to make growth curves for two samples of New Jersey (USA) clams, one from inshore (1.8 km from shore, 15 m deep), the other from offshore (17.5 km from shore, 28 m deep) waters. The offshore and inshore clams grow at approximately the same rate until Age 3 years, after which time the growth rates differ, as does the ultimate lifespan; the offshore clams grow more rapidly and attain a greater age — up to 31 years. Comparison of our growth curves with other published curves revealed a close correspondence to a curve which was based on a study of growth over a 5-year period. Curves based on external growth lines probably underestimate growth rate in early life and overestimate it in later years.  相似文献

It has been presumed that intertidal spawning by Limulus polyphemus minimizes the loss of egges to subtidal predators; however, this strategy involves considerable risks. Massive beach strandings of adults accompany seasonal spawning migrations of crabs along Cape May in Delaware Bay, (USA). At least 190000 horseshoe crabs, approximating 10% of the adult population, died from beach stranding along the New Jersey shore of Delaware Bay during the 1986 (May to June) spawning season. Abnormalities of the telson (which is used in righting behavior) were significantly more common among stranded crabs than among individuals actively spawning on the intertidal beach. The number of stranded crabs per day was not correlated with tidal height or environmental variables (wind speed, wave height) which characterized the conditions at spawning. A complex suite of factors, including the size of the available spawning population, tidal and weather conditions, and beach slope, influence the number stranded during the breeding season. Horseshoe crab stranding results in a large loss of gravid females from the population, and may represent a major input of organic matter to intertidal sandy beaches in certain regions of Delaware Bay.  相似文献

The MULTIFAN method of Fournier et al. was used to analyse a series of monthly length-frequency distributions of deep-water royal red prawns (Haliporoides sibogae de Man, 1907, Solenoceridae) for the estimation of growth, mortality and yield-per-recruit. Length data were collected from commercial catches made between Latitude 33° and 35°S from November 1988 to May 1990. MULTIFAN distinguished six cohorts in the royal red prawn population, aged at 6 mo intervals from about 1.5 to 4 yr. Most prawns were between 2 and 3 yr of age. Females and males were fully recruited at 23.1 and 21.5 mm carapace length (CL) respectively, when about 2 yr old. Females grew faster and reached larger sizes at age than males (growth coefficient, K=0.37 yr-1 and asymptotic length, L =48.3 mm CL for females, and K=0.49 yr-1 and L =33.5 mm CL for males). Total mortality (Z) was estimated at 1.6 and 1.2 yr-1 for females and males, respectively. Approximate values for natural mortality (M) ranged from 0.6 to 0.7 yr-1 for females, and from 0.4 to 0.8 yr-1 for males. Analysis of yield-per-recruit suggested that while the current yield could possibly be increased by decreasing the length at first capture (L c ), there seems to be little potential for an increase in yield from increased fishing effort in the area currently fished.  相似文献

Intertidal endobenthic bivalves are often dislodged from sediments by hydrodynamic forces. As a result, they encounter the dangers of predation and desiccation, which are generally harsh near the sediment surface. To cope with such dangers, the bivalves possibly possess: (1) a strong body to endure predation and desiccation stress, (2) quick mobility to avoid the stresses, or (3) a high growth rate for attaining a size refuge. The present study examined which of these modes are adopted by the subtropical cobbled-shore Venus clams Gafrarium tumidum (Röding, 1798) and Ruditapes variegatus (Sowerby, 1852), revealing the following interspecific differences. (1) G. tumidum survived better than R. variegatus did in harsh experimental conditions, namely: the experimental cages exposed to predation and desiccation on a cobbled shore; a laboratory aquarium with a predatory crab Scylla serrata; and ovens with high temperatures (27°C and 34°C). (2) R. variegatus was more mobile than G. tumidum was, digging into the sediment on a cobbled shore more rapidly at both high and low tides. (3) The two species with shell lengths 20–30 mm showed similar growth rates (median: –0.2 to 44.5 m day–1) in seasonal mark–recapture surveys over 2 years. Overall, to cope with the dangers of predation and desiccation G. tumidum appears to have a strong body, while R. variegatus displays rapid mobility, and neither species seems to attain a size refuge through rapid growth. Such species-specific modes are discussed in relation to the interspecific differences found in shell morphology.Communicated by T. Ikeda, Hakodate  相似文献

Chaotic genetic patchiness in an intertidal limpet,Siphonaria sp.   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Variation of 4 polymorphic enzymes was studied for 2 yr (1978 and 1979) in an undescribed species of Siphonaria, a pulmonate limpet, from a rocky shore at Rottnest Island, Western Australia. Depending on the locus, significant genetic differences were found among sites along 50 m of shore, between high and low portions of the shore within sites, between adults and recruits, and between recruits in the 2 yr. This genetic heterogeneity does not follow a simple, consistent pattern, but forms a shifting, ephemeral genetic patchiness best described as chaotic. This patchiness may result from temporal variation of numbers and genotypes of recruits, which leads to the proposal that planktonic dispersal, although causing uniformity on a large scale, can give rise to fine-scale genetic patchiness.  相似文献

Four populations of the native annual grassTriplasis purpurea were surveyed on coastal beaches along the south shore of Staten Island, NY, to determine the potential of this species to colonize shoreline habitats mostly devoid of other vegetation. If the species can establish and maintain dense populations, it may have conservation value for urban beaches disturbed by human activities. For two populations, survivorship, growth, and reproduction were monitored at different distances from shore to determine the ability of this species to maintain viable populations. At three sites,T. purpurea occurred in >75% of all quadrats and the highest density was 1195 plants/m2 at 74 m from shore in one recently disturbed site. Density generally increased with increasing distances from shore at low tide (from ca. 40 – 90 m). Plants showed the greatest growth and reproduction at close distances to shore (30 – 40 m); part of this effect was due to density in one population, but when density effects were removed statistically, there still remained a decline in growth and reproduction with increasing distance from shore. Improved vigor nearest to shore may be due to continual sand deposition. Survivorship showed a Type I pattern, with low mortality throughout the growing season. By colonizing newly-deposited and continually shifting sands,T. purpurea can contribute to the earliest stages of ecological succession along disturbed beaches in eastern North America and may be valuable to the development and management of urban coastal plant communities.  相似文献
