The effect of multiple injection-moulding reprocessing of three biodegradable matrices on their mechanical properties, melt
flow rate, molecular weight, phase transition temperatures and degradation temperature is presented. It has been found that,
with successive reprocessing, tensile, flexural and impact strength decreased. Drop in mechanical properties has been assigned
to degradation of the matrices, as corroborated by melt flow and molecular weight analysis. Although reprocessing did not
significantly affect the glass transition, it diminished the melting point and degradation temperature of polymers. Results
indicate that neat PLLA can be recycled for up to five times without suffering a drastic loss in mechanical and thermal properties.
The aliphatic polyester Mater-Bi TF01U/095R can be recycled for up to 10 times, whilst starch-based Mater-Bi YI014U/C wastes
should be destined to composting, since its recyclability is very poor. The effect of reprocessing on composites reinforced
with chemithermomechanical pulp (CTMP) followed the tendencies observed for the neat matrices. Whilst CTMP-fibres behave mainly
as filler in PLLA composites, reinforced thermoplastic starch-based composites presented enhanced mechanical properties and
recyclability. 相似文献

The objective of this work is to study the feasibility of reinforcing polymer composites by utilizing the biofibers from the agricultural residue of Moringa oleifera pod husks (MOPH). The chemical and physical properties of the fibers were comprehensively investigated to evaluate their potential as a filler in gelatin-based films. The effect of MOPH fiber concentrations of 0, 5, 10, and 15 wt% on the water vapor permeability (WVP), and mechanical and thermal properties of the gelatin-based films was studied. By incorporation of 10 wt% of the MOPH fibers in gelatin, the highest tensile strength and Young’s modulus, and the lowest WVP properties were obtained. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) photographs indicated good interfacial adhesion between the fibers and the gelatin matrix. TGA of the biocomposites revealed an improvement of thermal stability. Moreover, under accelerated weathering, the gelatin-MOPH-10% biocomposite degraded more slowly than the gelatin control. These results indicate that the MOPH fibers are a good reinforcing filler and may be useful for biocomposite applications. 相似文献

The Effect of Masterbatch Addition on the Mechanical, Thermal, Optical and Surface Properties of Poly(lactic acid) 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

There has been considerable interest in the use of the biodegradable polymer poly(lactic acid) (PLA) as a replacement for
petroleum derived polymers due to ease of processability and its high mechanical strength. Other material properties have
however limited its wider application. These include its brittle properties, low impact strength and yellow tint. In an attempt
to overcome these drawbacks, PLA was blended with four commercially available additives, commonly known as masterbatches.
The effect of the addition of 1.5 wt% of the four masterbatches on the mechanical, thermal, optical and surface properties
of the polymer was evaluated. All four masterbatches had a slight negative effect on the tensile strength of PLA (3–5% reduction).
There was a four fold increase in impact resistance however with the addition of one of the masterbatches. Differential scanning
calorimetry demonstrated that this increase corresponded to a decrease in the polymer crystallinity. However there was an
associated increase in polymer haze with the addition of this masterbatch. The clarity of PLA was improved through the addition
of an optical brightener masterbatch, but the impact resistance remained low. The glass transition and melting temperatures
of PLA were not affected by the addition of the masterbatches, and no change was observed in surface energy. Some delay in
PLA degradation, in a PBS degradation medium at 50 °C, was observed due to blending with these masterbatches. 相似文献

With growing interest in the use of eco-friendly composite materials, biodegradable polymers and composites from renewable resources are gaining popularity for use in commercial applications. However, the long-term performance of these composites and the effect of compatibilization on their weathering characteristics are unknown. In this study, five types of biodegradable biopolymer/wood fiber (WF) composites were compatibilized with maleic anhydride (MA), and the effect of accelerated UV weathering on their performance was evaluated against composites without MA and neat biopolymers. The composite samples were prepared with 30 wt% wood fiber and one of the five biodegradable biobased polymer: poly(lactic) acid (PLA), polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB), poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV), Bioflex (PLA blend), or Solanyl (starch based). Neat and composite samples were UV weathered for 2000 h (hours), and characterized for morphological, physical, thermal, and mechanical properties before and after weathering. Compared to composites without MA, composites containing MA grafted polymers exhibited improved properties due to increased interfacial adhesion between the fiber and matrix. Upon accelerated weathering, thermal and mechanical properties of 70% of the samples substantially decreased. Surfaces of all the samples were roughened, and drastic color changes were observed. Water absorption of all the samples increased after weathering exposure. Even though the compatibilization is shown to improve composite properties before weathering, it did not affect weathering of samples, as there were no considerable differences in properties exhibited by the composites with MA and without MA after weathering. The results suggest that compatibilization improves properties of biodegradable biobased composites without affecting its UV degradation properties. 相似文献

Blends of water—soluble polymers based on Poly vinyl alcohol (PVA) and Polyethylene glycol (PEG) have been prepared by the
solution casting technique. The effect of various doses of γ-radiation on the structural properties of PVA/PEG polymer blends
with all its compositions has been investigated. From the visual observation of all the blend compositions, it was found that,
the best compatibility of the blend is up to 40% PVA/60%PEG. The structure–Property behavior of all the prepared blends before
and after γ-irradiation was investigated by IR Spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), mechanical properties and Scanning
electron microscope (SEM). The gel content and the swelling behavior of the PVA/PEG blends were investigated. It was found
that the gel content increases with increasing irradiation dose and PVA concentration in the blend. Swelling percent increased
as the composition of PEG increased in the blend. The results obtained by FTIR analysis and SEM confirm the existence of possible
interaction between PVA and PEG homopolymers. TGA of PVA/PEG blend, before and after γ-irradiation, showed that the unirradiated
and irradiated PVA/PEG blends are more stable against thermal decomposition than pure PVA. Improvement in tensile mechanical
properties of PVA/PEG blends was occurred. 相似文献

To improve the mechanical performance of natural lignocellulosic jute yarn, grafting with [3-(trimethoxysilyl) propylmethacrylate] (TMSPM) monomer has been performed on in situ UV radiation and optimized the monomer concentration (30%) and irradiation time (30 min). Effect of various amino acids (1%) as additives in TMSPM with photografted jute yarn at optimized system has been studied. The polymer loading (PL) and tensile properties like tensile strength (TS) and elongation at break (Eb) of treated samples were enhanced by incorporation of amino acids and the highest properties (TS = 300% and Eb = 386%) achieved by the sample treated with l-Arginine (Arg) with 32.5% PL value. Weak acid like 3% acetic acid and inorganic acid like 1% sulfuric acid were also incorporated in the optimized system of TMSPM grafting and compared their effect on the tensile properties with amino acid treated samples. Water absorption and weathering resistance of treated and untreated samples were also performed and treated sample showed lesser water uptake as well as less weight loss and mechanical properties as compared to untreated samples. 相似文献

To develop an environmentally degradable polymer material, a masterbatch pro-oxidant system was blended into low-density polyethylene.
The polymer film samples were prepared by compression molding. The prepared films were placed under the natural environment
of Tehran for weathering studies and accelerated conditions were also performed for UV aging in UV chamber. At different time
intervals, the changes in chemical structure of photosensitized polyethylene samples were studied by FTIR and compared to
that of the control polyethylene films. Also the mechanical properties of photosensitized polyethylene films were determined
in comparison with the control films by measuring the tensile strength and elongation at break after exposure to the natural
environment and UV radiation. Results showed that the overall rate of degradation process is clearly dependent on the polyethylene
composition, test conditions (natural or accelerated), season of the year, and the duration of the weathering of the samples. 相似文献

The durability of biocomposites utilized for building components has been a subject of recent concern and questioning. To address these concerns, the long-term effects of weathering on biocomposites used as building components were evaluated using an accelerated weatherometer. The biocomposite samples were processed by sheet molding compounding (SMC) panel processing and/or compression molding. The accelerated weatherometer served to expose the samples to ultraviolet radiation (UV), condensation, and water spray at levels pertinent to actual conditions: 48 cycles of UV (340 nm) treatment at 60 °C for 2.5 h was followed by water spray for 0.5 h, and then condensation at 45 °C for 24 h. Twelve cycles were repeated in each test, and the total duration for the complete test was 2016 h. Measurements for color, surface roughness test weight change, and dynamical mechanical analysis were taken at regular intervals of time. It was found that the surface roughness increased, as the color changed, and storage modulus decreased with increases in the exposure time of the samples to accelerated weathering conditions, compared to their properties at the beginning of the test. 相似文献

Hybrid composites of thermoplastic biofiber reinforced with waste newspaper fiber (NF) and poplar wood flour (WF) were prepared.
The weight ratio of the lignocellulosic materials to polymer was 30:70 (w:w). Polypropylene (PP) and maleic anhydride grafted
polypropylene (MAPP) were also used as the polymer matrix and coupling agent, respectively. The mechanical properties, morphology
and thermal properties were investigated. The obtained results showed that tensile and flexural modulus of the composites
were significantly enhanced with addition of biofibers in both types (fiber and flour), as compared with pure PP. However,
the increasing in WF content substantially reduced the tensile, flexural and impact modulus, but improved the thermal stability.
This effect is explained by variations in fiber morphological properties and thermal degradation. Increasing fiber aspect
ratio improved mechanical properties. The effect of fiber size on impact was minimal compared to the effects of fiber content.
Scanning electron microscopy has shown that the composite, with coupling agent, promotes better fiber–matrix interaction.
The largest improvement on the thermal stability of hybrid composites was achieved when WF was added more. In all cases, the
degradation temperatures shifted to higher values after addition of MAPP. This work clearly showed that biofiber materials
in both forms of fiber and flour could be effectively used as reinforcing elements in thermoplastic PP matrix. 相似文献

Blends based on different ratios of starch (35–20%) and plasticizer (sugar; 0–15%) keeping the amount of poly(vinyl alcohol)
(PVA) constant, were prepared in the form of thin films by casting solutions. The effects of gamma-irradiation on thermal,
mechanical, and morphological properties were investigated. The studies of mechanical properties showed improved tensile strength
(TS) (9.61 MPa) and elongation at break (EB) (409%) of the starch-PVA-sugar blend film containing 10% sugar. The mechanical
testing of the irradiated film (irradiated at 200 Krad radiation dose) showed higher TS but lower EB than that of the non-radiated
film. FTIR spectroscopy studies supported the molecular interactions among starch, PVA, and sugar in the blend films, that
was improved by irradiation. Thermal properties of the film were also improved due to irradiation and confirmed by thermo-mechanical
analysis (TMA), differential thermo-gravimetric analysis (DTG), differential thermal analysis (DTA), and thermo-gravimetric
analysis (TGA). Surface of the films were examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM) image that supported the evidence
of crosslinking obtained after gamma irradiation on the film. The water up-take and degradation test in soil of the film were
also evaluated. In this study, sugar acted as a good plasticizing agent in starch/PVA blend films, which was significantly
improved by gamma radiation and the prepared starch-PVA-sugar blend film could be used as biodegradable packaging materials. 相似文献

Recycled poly(ethylene terephthalate) (R-PET) was blended with 15–30 wt% of styrene–ethylene/butylenes–styrene (SEBS) block
copolymer and maleic anhydride grafted SEBS (SEBS-g-MA). Effects of nucleation and toughening of the elastomers were evaluated
systematically by study of morphology, crystallization, thermal and mechanical properties of the blend. The addition of 30 wt%
SEBS promoted the formation of co-continuous structure of the blend and caused the fracture mechanism to change from strain
softening to strain hardening. Addition of SEBS-g-MA resulted in significant modification of phase morphology and obviously
improved the impact strength. The compatibilization reaction of PET with SEBS-g-MA accelerated the crystallization of PET
and increased the crystallinity. The shifts in glass transition temperature of PET towards that of SEBS-g-MA and the higher
modulus for R-PET/SEBS-g-MA (70/30) blend found by DMA are also indications of better interactions under the conditions of
compatibilization and interpenetrating structure. 相似文献

Thermal and mechanical properties of poly(lactic Acid) and poly(ethylene/butylene Succinate) blends 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
In this study, blends of poly (lactic acid) (PLA) with poly(ethylene/butylene succinate) (Bionolle) have been investigated
for their thermal and mechanical properties as a function of the concentration of Bionolle. Differential scanning calorimetry
(DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and tensile tests were used to characterize the blends. From the results of the
DMA and DSC, it was found that this blend system was not miscible within the compositions studied. DSC results showed that
adding Bionolle aids in crystallization of PLA. It was observed that increasing the Bionolle concentration led to a slight
increase in the strain-at-break of the blends but a decrease in the Young’s modulus and ultimate tensile strength. Biaxially
oriented films showed an increase in tensile strength, modulus, and strain-at-break. 相似文献

Natural cellulosic fibers are one of the smartest materials for use as reinforcement in polymers possessing a number of applications. Keeping in mind the immense advantages of the natural fibers, in present work synthesis of natural cellulosic fibers reinforced polymer composites through compression molding technique have been reported. Scanning Electron microscopy (SEM), Thermo gravimetric/Differential thermal/Derivative Thermogravimetry (TGA/DTA/DTG), absorption in different solvents, moisture absorbance, water uptake and chemical resistance measurements were used as characterization techniques for evaluating the different behaviour of cellulosic natural fibers reinforced polymer composites. Effect of fiber loading on mechanical properties like tensile strength, flexural strength, compressive strength and wear resistances has also been determined. Reinforcing of the polymer matrix with natural fibers was done in the form of short fiber. Present work indicates that green composites can be successfully fabricated with useful mechanical properties. These composites may be used in secondary structural applications in automotive, housing etc. 相似文献

Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and sugar beet pulp (SBP) were compounded by twin-screw extrusion and injection molded into composite
forms. Specific mechanical energy decreased with the addition of SBP during processing. PLA–SBP composites retained more tensile
strength than expected based on the Nicolais–Narkis model especially at high levels of SBP suggesting adhesion between SBP
and PLA. The thermal characteristics of PLA were not affected by thermo-mechanical processing or by the incorporation of SBP
up to 30% weight basis. PLA and PLA–SBP composites had similar tensile properties to other thermoplastic resins and may be
used as a cost-competitive replacement.

Effect of Matrix–Particle Interfacial Adhesion on the Mechanical Properties of Poly(lactic acid)/Wood-Flour Micro-Composites 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

The influence of interfacial matrix/particle adhesion on the mechanical properties of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) micro-composites
was investigated. The tensile strength of PLA/wood-flour micro-composites is almost independent of wood-flour content, suggesting
only weak adhesion exists between the PLA matrix and the wood-flour particles. The addition of wood-flour resulted in an increase
of up to 95% in the tensile modulus, in comparison with pure PLA, which showed a more resilient matrix. The addition of a
coupling agent, methylenediphenyl-diisocyanate (MDI) to the composition resulted in an increase in tensile strength and tensile
modulus of the micro-composites, of 10 and 135%, respectively, indicating enhanced matrix–particle interfacial adhesion. SEM
and electron probe microanalysis provided evidence of improved interfacial adhesion between PLA and wood-flour particles from
the addition of MDI. In contrast, addition of PEAA resulted in a micro-composite displaying substantially reduced tensile
strength, up to 35% and a slightly increased in impact strength, up to 15%, consistent with the introduction of the rubbery
PEAA component into the polymeric matrix. No evidence for increased matrix–particle adhesion was found for the PLA/wood-flour
micro-composites containing PEAA. 相似文献

In this work, performance of cow dung (CD) reinforced poly(lactic acid) (PLA) biocomposites was investigated for the potential use in load bearing application. CD of average 4 mm size was blended with PLA at different CD ratios (0–50 wt%) and their effects on the biocomposite properties were studied. The results showed an improvement in the flexural properties, while the tensile and impact strength dropped by 20 and 28% with the addition of 50% CD. The decline in the tensile and impact strength was due to micro-cracking and voids formation at higher CD content. Also, the incorporation of CD slightly decreased the thermal stability of the biocomposite. However, dynamic mechanical properties of the biocomposites generally improved. SEM analysis of tensile and impact fractured surfaces indicated that the CD had a reasonable adhesion with matrix. Moreover, the SEM micrographs of soil burial studies showed an accelerated degradation of higher CD wt% biocomposites. 相似文献

High density polyethylene (HDPE)/bamboo composites with different nanoclay and maleated polyethylene (MAPE) contents were
fabricated by melt compounding. The compounding characteristics, clay dispersion, HDPE crystallization, and mechanical properties
of the composites were studied. The equilibrium torque during compounding decreased with use of clay masterbatch and increased
with the addition of MAPE. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) data showed that the clay was exfoliated only when 1% clay was added
to pure HDPE without MAPE. For HDPE/bamboo systems, MAPE was necessary to achieve clay exfoliation. For pure HDPE system,
both dynamic and static bending moduli increased, while impact strength decreased with increased clay loading. For the HDPE/bamboo
fiber composites, tensile strength, bending modulus and strength were improved with the use of MAPE. The use of the clay in
the system led to reduced mechanical properties. Techniques such as pre-coating fibers with clay–MAPE mixture are needed to
enhance the synergetic effect of the clay and bamboo fiber on the composite properties in the future study. 相似文献

Novel thermoplastic composites made from two major industrial and consumer wastes, fly ash and waste tire powder, have been developed. The effect of increasing fly ash loadings on performance characteristics such as tensile strength, thermal, dynamic mechanical and magnetic properties has been investigated. The morphology of the blends shows that fly ash particles have more affinity and adhesion towards the rubbery phase when compared to the plastic phase. The fracture surface of the composites shows extensive debonding of fly ash particles. Thermal analysis of the composites shows a progressive increase in activation energy with increase in fly ash loadings. Additionally, morphological studies of the ash residue after 90% thermal degradation shows extensive changes occurring in both the polymer and filler phases. The processing ability of the thermoplastics has been carried out in a Monsanto processability testing machine as a function of shear rate and temperature. Shear thinning behavior, typical of particulate polymer systems, has been observed irrespective of the testing temperatures. Magnetic properties and percolation behavior of the composites have also been evaluated. 相似文献

Solid and soft forms of waste polystyrene have been treated with coumarone–indene resin and benzene to produce a new adhesive.
The adhesive is prepared from various compositions of polystyrene (13–38 wt%), coumarone-indene resin (5–7%) and benzene (57–80%).
Viscosity, peel strength and tensile shear strength of the adhesive is determined by a HAAKE Rotary Viscometer, Lloyd Adhesion
Tester and Instron machine, respectively. Rolling ball technique was used to measure the tackiness of the adhesive. Results
show that the adhesion property increases with increase in polystyrene composition and coating thickness. This observation
is attributed to the increasing wettability of adhesive on the substrate. 相似文献

Thin films of gelatin were prepared by casting. Then the films were photocured and the mechanical properties were studied.
The tensile strength of UV cured gelatin films showed about 10% enhancement than that of raw gelatin films. Minor amount of
urea (1–5%) was used as additive in aqueous gelatin solution and films were prepared using same technique. Four formulations
were prepared in methanol with 2-ethylhexyl acrylate in the presence of photoinitiator (darocur-1664). The films were soaked
in the prepared formulations and then cured under UV radiation at different intensities (5–25 passes). Percentage of urea,
monomer concentration, soaking time and radiation intensities were optimized with the extent of polymer loading, TS and elongation
at break of the photocured film. The films containing 2% urea, cured with 3% EHA for 3 min at 15th UV pass showed the highest
mechanical properties. A significant improvement of TS (31%) occurred when EHA (3%) was incorporated. 相似文献
