The ability of activated carbon from cassava peels to remove heavy metals like Cu(II) and Pb(II) from hospital wastewater was investigated. The study showed that a pH of 8 was the best for the sorption of both metal ions onto the biosorbent. The time-dependent experiments for the metal ions showed that the binding of the metal ions to the biomass was rapid and occurred within 20–120 min. Sorption efficiency increased with a rise in adsorbent dosage. It increased from 12 to 73 % for Pb(II) and 26 to 79 % for Cu(II) when the adsorbent dose increased from 2 to 12 g. An increase in temperature led to an increase in sorption for both metal ions. The Langmuir model showed that the biomass has a higher sorption capacity for Cu(II) than Pb(II), with q m = 5.80 mg g?1 for Pb(II) and 8.00 mg g?1 for Cu(II). The Freundlich isotherm K f was 1.4 for Pb(II) and 1.8 for Cu(II), indicating a preferential sorption of Cu(II) onto the biosorbent. Adsorption capacity was found to decrease with an increase in particle sizes. Sorption occurred by physical mechanisms and was mainly controlled by intraparticle diffusion.  相似文献

Innovative separation and beneficiation techniques of various materials encountered in electrical and electronic equipment wastes (WEEE) is a major improvement for its recycling. Mechanical separation-oriented characterisation of WEEE was conducted in an attempt to evaluate the amenability of mechanical separation processes. Properties such as liberation degree of fractions (plastics, metals ferrous and non-ferrous), which are essential for mechanical separation, are analysed by means of a grain counting approach. Two different samples from different recycling industries were characterised in this work. The first sample is a heterogeneous material containing different types of plastics, metals (ferrous and non-ferrous), printed circuit board (PCB), rubber and wood. The second sample contains a mixture of mainly plastics. It is found for the first sample that all aluminium particles are free (100%) in all investigated size fractions. Between 92% and 95% of plastics are present as free particles; however, 67% in average of ferromagnetic particles are liberated. It can be observed that only 42% of ferromagnetic particles are free in the size fraction larger than 20 mm. Particle shapes were also quantified manually particle by particle. The results show that the particle shapes as a result of shredding, turn out to be heterogeneous, thereby complicating mechanical separation processes. In addition, the separability of various materials was ascertained by a sink–float analysis and eddy current separation. The second sample was separated by automatic sensor sorting in four different products: ABS, PC–ABS, PS and rest product. The fractions were characterised by using the methodology described in this paper. The results show that the grade and liberation degree of the plastic products ABS, PC–ABS and PS are close to 100%. Sink–float separation and infrared plastic identification equipment confirms the high plastic quality. On the basis of these findings, a global separation flow sheet is proposed to improve the plastic separation of WEEE.  相似文献

Ceramic waste materials from the production of titles has increased over the years. Preliminary studies on the properties of ceramics showed that this material can be incorporated into asphalt mixtures as aggregates. Laboratory tests were conducted to evaluate the feasibility of utilizing ceramic materials from tile manufacturing firms. A study was undertaken to look into the performance of crushed ceramics that were incorporated in asphalt mixtures to replace the conventional granite aggregates from sizes 5.0 mm down including the 75 micron filler. The replacement was done proportionally with a 0, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100% percent by weight of granite aggregates. The outcome of the study showed that the performance of recycled ceramic aggregates in hot mix asphalt (HMA) reached an optimum at about 20% which means there is a great potential for the use of it in asphalt mixtures. The Marshall stability showed an increment of about 25% while the resilient modulus strength improved by 13.5% as compared with the control specimen. All samples were analyzed at various proportions of ceramic–granite aggregate combination and were observed that a 20% use of 5 mm down ceramic aggregates blended with granite aggregates produce higher strength HMA.  相似文献

In this study, a series of laboratory chamber tests was carried out to evaluate the applicability of a porous concrete pile fabricated with recycled aggregates for soft ground improvement. The recycled aggregate porous concrete pile (RAPP) has been developed to replace natural aggregates and to overcome technical problems associated with the conventional compaction piling systems. The laboratory chamber tests for evaluating the performance of RAPP were carried out with a cylindrical mold of 280?mm in internal diameter and 580?mm in height. A replacement area ratio of 5?% and three different loading steps were applied in the chamber tests. The experimental results of the surface settlement, excess pore pressure and vertical stress distribution versus time were compared with those of the sand compaction pile (SCP) reinforced composite ground under the same experimental condition. In addition, the experimental results were compared with the numerical simulation using ABAQUS. The current study shows that the settlement reduction in the RAPP-reinforced system is?significantly enhanced due to load transfer from the soil formation to the RAPP. Furthermore, the comparison of consolidation rates shows that the RAPP can also accelerate the consolidation of soft clay formation because the RAPP behaves as a vertical drain.  相似文献

This study investigated the fluoride removal efficiency and adsorption of a low-cost adsorbent prepared using aluminum-modified activated carbon from khat (Catha edulis) in a batch-mode reactor. The operating factors, including pH, adsorbent dose, and fluoride initial concentration, were optimized using the Box Behnken design of response surface methodology. The correlation coefficient (R2) for the removal of fluoride was found to be 0.93, showing the validity of the developed quadratic model. The results showed that, under optimized conditions of an adsorbent dose of 2.47 g/L, an initial fluoride concentration of 2.1 mg/L, an initial pH 6.08, and 60 min, 90% fluoride reduction was achieved. Meanwhile, the adsorption isotherm and kinetics followed the Langmuir adsorption model and the Pseudo second model, respectively, with a monolayer adsorption capacity of 0.3065 mg/g. On the other hand, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy analyses revealed the formation of major peaks of components such as hydroxyl and carboxylic acids. The same optimum treatment conditions (adsorbent dose of 2.47 g/L, initial pH 6.08, and treatment time of 60 min) managed to remove low initial fluoride concentrations of 3.67 and 4.33 mg/L from real groundwater by 72.84% and 70.37%, respectively. The modified adsorbent prepared in this study successfully treat the low fluoride concentration to a level recommended by WHO for drinking water.  相似文献

In order to explore the beneficial utilization of heavy oil fly ash (HOFA) generated in the power plants, the present study is intended to optimize the chromium(VI) [Cr(VI)] adsorption on activated carbon produced from HOFA. The raw HOFA obtained from a power plant was washed by nitric/hydrochloric acid and activated at 800 °C with a holding time of 60 min to produce fly ash activated carbon (FAC). Phosphoric acid was used as a chemical agent to improve the surface characteristics of the HOFA during the activation process. Batch adsorption experiments were employed to evaluate the effects of different parameters such as initial Cr(VI) concentration, pH, and FAC dose on the removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous solution. A total of 17 adsorption experimental runs were carried out employing the detailed conditions followed the response surface methodology based on the Box–Behnken design. The results indicate that developed FAC has the potential for removing Cr(VI) from wastewater. Under the test conditions, a maximum of 91.51 % Cr(VI) removal efficiency was achieved.  相似文献

Throughout the utilization of recycled materials, weathering factors such as humidity, gas composition and temperature have the potential to change the material properties and enhance the release of inorganic contaminants. In this research, the effects of weathering factors on recycled gravel materials for roadbeds were evaluated by applying three kinds of accelerating exposure tests: freezing–melting cycle test, carbonation test, and dry–humid cycle test. The effects of exposure tests were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and serial batch leaching test, making it possible to identify the change in release mechanisms. Sixteen elements, mainly metals, were investigated. Tested samples were molten slag from municipal solid waste, molten slag from automobile shredded residue, and crushed natural stone.After the exposure tests, the increase of cumulative release in the leaching test was generally less than 2.0 times that of the samples without the exposure test. Among the three test conditions, freezing–melting showed a slightly higher effect of enhancing the release of constituents. XRD analysis showed no change in chemical species. From these results, it was determined that the stony samples were stable enough so that their properties were not significantly changed by the exposure tests.  相似文献

The synthesis of recycled plastics from recovered monomeric materials obtained from the depolymerization reaction of fiber-reinforced plastics (FRP) was examined. The depolymerization reaction of FRP in the presence of N,N-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) smoothly yielded the corresponding monomers, which mainly consisted of dimethyl phthalates. The polymerization reaction with this monomer failed to form the corresponding unsaturated polyesters due to contamination by N-methyl-4-pyridone, a decomposition product of DMAP. An efficient purification of the recovered monomer was achieved by washing with water, and the purified monomer successfully yielded the corresponding polymers. A hardness test revealed that the polymers were as hard as the polyester made from virgin materials. The present modification provides a practical method for the preparation of recycled plastics from depolymerized plastics.  相似文献

The new unsaturated poly(ester-urethane) was synthesized by the reaction of 4,4??-methylenediphenyldiisocyanate with 4,4??-di(2,3-butenhydroxyl) terephthalate in the ratio of 1:1. 4,4??-di(2,3-butenhydroxyl) terephthalate was first prepared by reacting 2?mol of cis-2-butene-1, 4-diol with 1?mol of terephthalic acid. The terephthalic acid used was derived from the recycling of PET bottles via subjection to saponification process. The synthesized compounds were characterized by CHN analysis, FT-IR, 1H NMR and UV?CVis spectroscopy, with consistency of results showing the presence of the new unsaturated poly(ester-urethane) II. Thermal properties of the new polymer was verified by differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis, whereas the mechanical properties were characterized by tensile, elongation, hardness, adhesion and impact testing. The electrical conductivity and the electrical resistance of the compound were observed with increasing applied voltage.  相似文献

Copolyesters of 3-hydroxybutyrate (3HB) and 3-hydroxyvalerate (3HV) were produced at 30°C from various carbon sources byAlcaligenes eutrophus under batch-fed growth conditions. The production of P(3HB-co-3HV) from butyric and pentanoic acids was effective under nitrogenlimited conditions, and the conversion of carbon sources into copolyester was as high as 56 wt% at a C/N molar ratio of 40. In contrast, under excess-nitrogen conditions (C/N<10), cell growth was good, while P(3HB-co-3HV) production was partially inhibited. The production of P(3HB-co-3HV) from fructose and propionic acid was almost completely inhibited under excess-nitrogen conditions.  相似文献

The possibility of recycling waste medium density fiberboard (MDF) into wood-cement composites was evaluated. Both new fibers and recycled steam exploded MDF fibers had poor compatibility with cement if no treatment was applied, due to interference of the hydration process by the water soluble components of the fiber. However, this issue was resolved when a rapid hardening process with carbon dioxide injection was adopted. It appears that the rapid carbonation allowed the board to develop considerable strength before the adverse effects of the wood extractives could take effect. After 3-5 min of carbon dioxide injection, the composites reached 22-27% of total carbonation and developed 50-70% of their final (28-day) strength. Composites containing recycled MDF fibers had slightly lower splitting tensile strength and lower tensile toughness properties than those containing new fibers especially at a high fiber/cement ratio. Composites containing recycled MDF fibers also showed lower values of water absorption. Unlike composites cured conventionally, composites cured under CO(2) injection developed higher strength and toughness with increased fiber content. Incorporation of recycled MDF fibers into wood cement composites with CO(2) injection during the production stage presents a viable option for recycling of this difficult to manage waste material.  相似文献

The presence of ammoniacal nitrogen (N-NH3) in leachate is one of the problems normally faced by landfill operators. Slow leaching of wastes producing nitrogen and no significant mechanism for transformation of N-NH3 in the landfills causes a high concentration of ammoniacal nitrogen in leachate over a long period of time. A literature review showed that the removal of ammoniacal nitrogen from leachate was not well documented and to date, there were limited studies in Malaysia on this aspect, especially in adsorption treatment. The main objective of the present study was to investigate the suitability of activated carbon, limestone and a mixture of both materials as a filtering medium, in combination with other treatments capable of attenuating ammoniacal nitrogen which is present in significant quantity (between 429 and 1909 mg L(-1)) in one of the landfill sites in Malaysia. The results of the study show that about 40% of ammoniacal nitrogen with concentration of more than 1000 mg L(-1) could be removed either by activated carbon or a mixture of carbon with limestone at mixture ratio of 5:35. This result shows that limestone is potentially useful as a cost-effective medium to replace activated carbon for ammoniacal nitrogen removal at a considerably lower cost.  相似文献

Fly ashes with high-unburned-carbon content, referred to as fly ash carbons, are an increasing problem for the utility industry, since they cannot be marketed as a cement extender and, therefore, have to be disposed. Previous work has explored the potential development of amine-enriched fly ash carbons for CO(2) capture. However, their performance was lower than that of commercially available sorbents, probably because the samples investigated were not activated prior to impregnation and, therefore, had a very low surface area. Accordingly, the work described here focuses on the development of activated fly ash derived sorbents for CO(2) capture. The samples were steam activated at 850 degrees C, resulting in a significant increase of the surface area (1075m(2)/g). The activated samples were impregnated with different amine compounds, and the resultant samples were tested for CO(2) capture at different temperatures. The CO(2) adsorption of the parent and activated samples is typical of a physical adsorption process. The impregnation process results in a decrease of the surface areas, indicating a blocking of the porosity. The highest adsorption capacity at 30 and 70 degrees C for the amine impregnated activated carbons was probably due to a combination of physical adsorption inherent from the parent sample and chemical adsorption of the loaded amine groups. The CO(2) adsorption capacities for the activated amine impregnated samples are higher than those previously published for fly ash carbons without activation (68.6 vs. 45mg CO(2)/g sorbent).  相似文献
