Experiments on the edible mussel Mytilus edulis, the American oyster Crassostrea virginica, and the hard clam Mercenaria mercenaria, using flowing systems, showed that the feeding and biodeposition rates were affected by food concentration. At all levels of food concentration, the order of increasing feeding rate (both the percent of available particulate carbon and the actual amount of carbon removed) was: clam < oyster < mussel. All bivalves exhibited lower feeding rates (both precent and actual) at low food concentrations. However, the precent of available food removed quickly increased to a maximum at food concentrations typical for the natural environment. This maximum remained constant for the mussel and oyster, but declined with increasing food concentration for the clam. However, because this percentage was for increasing levels, the actual carbon removed continued to increase up to the highest food level for all three bivalves. In increasing order of biodeposition rate, the bivalves were: clam < oyster < mussel. The biodeposition rates of the three bivalves increased logarithmically with increased food concentration as a result of the production of pseudofeces. The feeding and biodeposition data were used to calculate assimilation rates, and this pointed out the higher efficiency of the oyster compared to the mussel and clam.Contribution No. 2993 from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.  相似文献

The effect of food density on the growth, survival, and swimming activity of plaice larvae (Pleuronectes platessa L.) was investigated under controlled laboratory conditions. Suboptimal food concentrations decrease the growth of the height of the body musculature relative to length, and increase the amount of time spent searching for food. Older larvae are able to withstand much longer periods without food than young larvae. On the basis of these experiments, it is suggested that food limitation in a larval plaice population is likely to result in a concave mortality curve.  相似文献

Summary Two laboratory experiments assessed the role of nose-to-head and nose-mouth investigation in the transmission of food preferences from Acomys cahirinus mothers to their offspring. Pups spent more time nosing and licking the nose-mouth area of mothers who ate a novel food (fresh potato or carrot) than of mothers who ate no novel food. A greater amount of the less-preferred novel food (potato) was subsequently eaten by pups whose mothers had eaten potato than pups whose mothers had eaten either carrot or familiar laboratory chow only. Mothers maintained a stereotypic posture during nose-mouth investigation, holding still with mouth slightly open, providing both a source of specific food cues and a context in which pups could become familiar with them. These data suggest an active role by Acomys mothers in the development of offspring food preferences.  相似文献

Offspring delayed dispersal is the principal mechanism leading to formation of kin-based societies. It has been suggested that parents promote offspring philopatry by providing them with preferential access to the food resources of the territory and that parental tolerance may be affected by territory quality. However, few studies have addressed this hypothesis in kin-living vertebrate species. Here, we show that in cooperative breeding groups of carrion crows (Corvus corone corone) containing retained offspring and immigrants, dominant breeding males behaved nepotistically on an experimental source of food by (1) attacking immigrants with more frequency and intensity than offspring and (2) associating preferentially with their offspring on the feeding spot and sharing food with them. This parental facilitation allowed the offspring to spend more time feeding than higher-rank immigrants. We also found that a year-round experimental food supplementation neither increased breeding males’ tolerance nor relented the overall aggressiveness in the groups. This indicates that higher natal philopatry observed on fed territories compared to unfed ones is not a consequence of a more benign social environment. Rather, it suggests that offspring value territory resource wealth and adjust the timing of dispersal accordingly.  相似文献

The cephalothorax length of the marine pelagic Copepoda Acartia clausi Giesbrecht, Temora longicornis (Müller), Centropages hamatus (Lilljeborg) and Pseudocalanus sp. was monitored at 15°C during prolonged cultivation through up to 55 filial generations and at different concentrations of food. The length of T. longicornis decreased considerably during the first 15 generations and remained rather constant thereafter. In the other species, body length increased slightly or remained almost constant. Genetic changes are probably involved. Food concentration influenced body size of all species, particularly C. hamatus, in which 80% of the natural size range may be explained by differences in food concentration. The idea that temperature is a dominant factor in determining the length of copepods should be reconsidered.  相似文献

Deposit-feeders can respond to seasonal fluctuations in food concentration both functionally (e.g. by adjusting feeding rates) and physiologically (e.g. by changing the concentration of bacteriolytic agents in gut fluids). Laboratory feeding experiments were carried out (11 to 21 July 1997) with the arenicolid polychaete worm Abarenicola pacifica (Healy and Wells). Objectives were to test for separate and interactive effects of sediment food concentration and temperature (6, 11, and 16 °C) on deposit-feeder functional (feeding rates) and physiological (bacteriolytic activity of gut fluids) responses. Food concentration was varied experimentally using sieved (1 mm) natural sediments (Md φ=2.00; 0.6% organic) mixed with combusted (500 °C, 8 h) sediments for final concentrations of 25, 50, and 100% natural sediment. Sediment food quality was measured as: (1) bioavailable amino acids (EHAA), (2) chlorophyll a (chl a), and (3) bacterial abundance. Feeding rates were inferred from egestion rates (ER, g h−1) and analyzed with respect to worm size. Bacteriolytic activity of midgut fluids was assayed turbidimetrically against two bacterial isolates, after worms had fed on experimental sediments for 15 d. Temperature and food concentration both significantly affected feeding rates, with maxima occurring at 50 and 100% natural sediment mixtures, and at high (16 °C) temperature. ER was positively, but not significantly correlated with EHAA and chl a; a positive, significant correlation was detected between ER and sediment bacterial abundance. Overall, functional responses agreed with earlier compensatory intake models for deposit-feeders. However, the size and direction of these responses was temperature-sensitive, suggesting that these models need to be adjusted for changes in absorption rates. No effects of ambient temperature or food concentration on bacteriolytic rates were observed, possibly due to compensatory mechanisms or the presence of multiple bacteriolytic agents in gut fluids. Laboratory experiments were conducted to differentiate between factors controlling the hatching success of copepod eggs. Factors that could affect viability of eggs; viz food quality, female condition and external factors were investigated. In a series of experiments the copepod Acartia tonsa Dana was fed several different diets while egg production and hatching success were monitored. The diet was analysed for fatty acid content as an indicator of food quality. Both egg production and hatching were found to be affected by the nutritional quality of the food. Hatching was also highly dependent on female fertility. External effects were tested by exposing eggs to diatom extracts. Negative effects were only evident at high extract concentrations, but disappeared when aeration was supplied to the solution. Oxygen measurements showed that failure to hatch was due to hypoxia in the extracts. No inhibitory or toxic effects of diatom cell components on hatching could be found.  相似文献

The process by which ant scouts move a group of nestmates toward a newly discovered food site is called recruitment. In this paper, I report on the interactions between scouts and nestmates that result in a graded recruitment response to graded food quality in the fire ant, Solenopsis invicta. Twelve experimental groups composed of 100 fire ant workers and 50 fire ant larvae were established (three experimental groups per colony × four stock colonies). Each experimental group was placed in a shallow, artificial nest with a glass cover. After a 48-h period of food deprivation, experimental groups were exposed to one of three concentrations of sugar water. Behavioral interactions between scouts and nestmates in each group were videotaped at 10× magnification for 20 min. Detailed behavioral data on a total of 120 scouts (10 scouts per experimental group) and ~1,000 nestmates (~90 nestmates per experimental group) were transcribed from the videotapes using standard play and frame-by-frame techniques. Throughout the recruitment process, scouts employed six discrete behaviors to inform nestmates of the location and quality of a food site. Scouts laid incoming trails, waggled their heads, increased walking tempo, stroked nestmates with their antennae, advertised with a brief food display, and led groups of nestmates to the food site by laying outgoing trails. In turn, nestmates assessed the food sample with antennae, then responded to or resisted recruitment based on the quality of food advertised, their employment status and their level of hunger. In summary, recruitment was an emergent property based on competent supply and demand decisions made face-to-face inside the nest rather than on the trail or at the food site.Communicated by J. Dinoflagellates, which comprise an important part of the phytoplankton in the neritic region of the Southern California Bight, are known to be grazed byCalanus pacificus; rates of ingestion, development and survival of nauplii are influenced by the food quality of dinoflagellates. We have examined the effects of dinoflagellate food quality on reproduction ofC. pacificus females sampled in La Jolly Bay (32°N; 117°W) between 6 April and 4 May 1988. Four sets of experiments were conducted in which copepods were fed five different species:Gymnodinium splendens, Gyrodinium resplendens., G. dorsum, Exuviella mariae lebourae andGymnodinium simplex. These species were selected on the criterion of their success in supporting the growth of nauplii in previous rearing experiments. The experimental culture concentration was maintained at 100µg C 1–1, near that of the natural seston. As indices of successful reproduction, we measured the percentage of spawning females and the number of eggs laid per female per day. Laboratory results were compared to stages of ovarian maturation of wild females. Four stages of maturation were determined using histological and microscopic observations.Gymnodinium splendens, Exuviella mariae lebourae, andG. simplex yielded clearly inferior results: few females were able to lay eggs repetitively over the first few days of confinement.Gyrodinium resplendens and, above all,G. dorsum yielded the best results. The stage of sexual maturation in situ appears to influence the rhythmicity of egg-laying events. In the presence of high-quality food, females are able to maintain high reproductive rates by sustaining the maturation of successive batches of eggs; good food quality appears to assure this secondary vitellogenesis and the rapid turnover of ovocytes.  相似文献

We developed a predictive relationship to determine the grazing rate of Brachionus plicatilis at given temperatures and food concentrations; this function could be applied to experimental culturing and aquaculture practices. Grazing experiments were conducted at temperatures between 5°C and 40°C and at food concentrations, of the flagellate Isochrysis galbana, ranging between ~0 and 106 ml-1. In total, 136 grazing rates were determined, using the prey depletion method, for rotifers acclimated to treatments for 0.5 or 4 h. The response of grazing rate to temperature and food concentration was described using a model that combined a rectangular hyperbolic function for food concentration and a sigmoidal function for temperature. Using non-linear curve-fitting methods an equation was obtained: G=(452F)/(159000+F)Ǵ.94/(1+2190002T-4.35) , where G is the grazing rate (flagellates rotifer-1 min-1), F is the food concentration (flagellates ml-1), and T is temperature (°C). The equation indicates a maximum grazing rate of ~35 prey rotifer-1 min-1, above ~4᎒5 prey ml-1 and 25°C.  相似文献

The use of the egg production rate of herbivorous copepods as an important parameter for understanding population dynamics and as an index of secondary production requires knowledge of the regulatory mechanisms involved and of the response to changes in food concentrations and temperature. Furthermore, the effects of season and generation on egg production have to be studied. In this context data are presented for Calanus finmarchicus from the northern North Atlantic. Prefed and prestarved females were exposed to different concentrations of the diatom Thalassiosira antarctica over 1 to 2 wk at 0 or 5 °C, and egg deposition was controlled daily. Egg production increased with higher food concentrations, but much less when prestarved. The effect of temperatures between −1.5 and 8 °C on egg production was studied in females maintained at optimum feeding conditions. Egg production rate increased exponentially over the whole temperature range by a factor of 5.2, from 14.2 to 73.4 eggs female−1 d−1, and carbon-specific egg production by 4, from 2.1 to 8.5% body C d−1. The response to starvation was also temperature dependent. In both the temperature and feeding experiments egg production rate was regulated mainly by changes of the spawning interval, while changes of clutch size were independent of experimental conditions. Different responses to optimum feeding conditions were observed in females collected in monthly intervals on three occasions between March and May. The March females deposited more clutches than the April and May females. In May, >50% of the females did not spawn at all. Maximum egg production rates were never >25% of the rate expected at 5 °C, indicating endogenous control of egg production in addition to food and temperature effects. Sessile females of the gastropod Crepidula fecunda are exclusively suspension-feeders. Our previous work showed that particles removed from suspension are entrained on the gill and continuously accumulate as a mucous string on the distal margin of the lamella, although some are transferred by a ciliary tract to the food pouch, where they form a mucous ball. The mucous string is transferred from the gill margin to the neck canal, where it forms a mucous cord which is transported to the mouth. The mucous ball and the mucous cord are ingested with the aid of the radula. In this study we examined the response of the system to a wide range of cell concentrations of the flagellate Isochrysis galbana. As the particle concentration increased from 5,000 to 200,000 cells ml-1, the volume of the mucous ball almost doubled, as did the number of radular extrusions required to ingest it. The total volume of mucous balls produced and ingested increased very slightly as particle concentration rose from 5,000 to 100,000 cells ml-1, but the volume of mucous cord material ingested increased four to five times over the same range. At higher food concentrations the mucous cord increased in thickness, but not in length, which is constrained by the length of the gill margin. At all particle concentrations the mucous cord accounted for 80–95% of the total material (mucous cords plus mucous balls). Ingestion rate reached a maximum at 140,000 cells ml-1 for mucous balls and mucous cords. At higher concentrations the production of pseudofaeces increased from all sources ("type-I" pseudofaeces from rejected mucous balls; "type-II" pseudofaeces from rejected fragments of mucous cords; and "type-III" pseudofaeces, which come from particles trapped in a coarse mucous net at the mouth of the inhalant mantle cavity and are transferred via the lateral ciliary tract to the mantle margin, by-passing the food pouch). Thus C. fecunda has adopted a feeding strategy in which particle entrainment by the gills is continuous, even at very high ambient particle concentrations (200,000 cells ml-1 for I. galbana), and excess material which cannot be ingested is rejected by one or more of three routes for the elimination of pseudofaeces.Communicated by P.W. The transfer of chlorinated hydrocarbons (CHC) in a laboratory simulation of a three trophic level marine food chain was studied. The food chain consisted of the algal flagellate Dunaliella sp., the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis, and the larva of the Northern anchovy Engraulis mordax. CHC were introduced into the seawater at concentrations representative of near-shore conditions off southern California without the use of dispersing agents. Each trophic level appeared to be in a steady-state at the time of first sampling, 5 days after inoculation. Apparent partition coefficients were calculated for each trophic level. The CHC contamination in the diet of the rotifers and anchovy larvae was also calculated. Unfed anchovy larvae accumulated the same amount of CHC as fed larvae and the final concentration appeared to be dependent on the CHC concentration in the seawater. The data in this report suggest that CHC accumulation is not a food-chain phenomenon but rather the result of direct partitioning of the compounds between the seawater and the test organisms.  相似文献

Omnivorous feeding behavior of the Antarctic krill Euphausia superba   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
Feeding experiments were conducted at Palmer Station from December 1985 to February 1986 to examine the potential role of copepod prey as an alternative food source for Euphausia superba. Copepod concentration, copepod size, phytoplankton concentration, the duration of krill starvation and the volume of experimental vessels were altered to determine effects on ingestion and clearance rates. Krill allowed to feed on phytoplankton and copepods in 50-litre tubs showed greatly increased feeding rates relative to animals feeding in the much smaller volumes of water traditionally used for krill-feeding studies. Clearance rates on copepods remained constant over the range of concentrations offered, but clearance rates on phytoplankton increased linearly with phytoplankton concentration. Feeding rates increased when larger copepods were offered and when krill were starved for two weeks prior to experiments. Clearance rates of krill feeding on copepods were higher than, but not correlated with, their clearance rates on phytoplankton in the same vessel. E. superba may have a distinct mechanism for capturing copepods, perhaps through mechanoreception. Although our observed clearance rate of 1055 ml krill-1 h-1 indicates that krill can feed very efficiently on copepod prey, such feeding would meet less than 10% of their minimum metabolic requirements at the typical copepod concentrations reported for Antarctic waters. However, substantial energy could be gained if krill fed on the patches of high copepod concentrations occasionally reported during the austral summer, or if krill and copepods were concentrated beneath the sea ice during the winter or spring months. Our results, indicating efficient feeding on zooplankton and higher clearance rates on phytoplankton than previously believed, represent a step towards balancing the energy budget of E. superba in Antarctic waters.  相似文献

For males, courting and foraging are often behavioral alternatives, which take time and consume energy. When males have a possibility of mating with receptive females, there may be a behavioral trade-off between courtship and feeding; the outcome of which may be affected by male physiological condition and food availability. Although many mathematical models and empirical studies suggest that the expression of male courtship signals are condition-dependent, decisions about courtship and mating strategies in relation to food availability have not attracted much attention. In this study, we tested whether daily changes in food availability affect males’ decisions about whether to court. We conducted experiments with the fiddler crab Uca lactea by providing males with additional food every other day. In food-supplemented enclosures, males did not increase courtship activity on the days when food was supplemented. However, they built more courtship structures (semidomes) and waved more on the days when they were not given additional food. Male size had a strong influence on the number of days the males courted. We also tested whether the frequency of surface mating, as an alternative reproductive tactic, decreased when food was supplemented. Contrary to our expectation, the number of males that exhibited the surface-mating tactic increased when food was supplemented whereas the number of mate-searching females did not change. Our findings in this field study suggest that reproductive decisions by male fiddler crabs are affected by fluctuating food availability and present body condition, and the alternative mating tactic of this species may be more frequently used by males under good condition.  相似文献

The feeding and metabolic rates of Mytilus edulis L. of different body sizes were measured in response to changes in particle concentrations ranging from 2 to 350 mg l-1. Rates of oxygen consumption were not significantly affected by changes in seston concentration, whereas clearance rates gradually declined with increasing particle concentration. Pseudofaeces production was initiated at relatively low seston concentrations (<5 mg l-1). Marked seasonal changes were recorded in the composition of suspended particulates (seston) in an estuary in south-west England. Total seston was sampled at frequent intervals throughout an annual cycle and analysed in terms of: particle size-frequency distributions, total dry weight (mg l-1), inorganic content, chlorophyll a, carbohydrate, protein and lipid. The particulate carbohydrate, protein and lipid content provided an estimate of the food content of the seston. The results are discussed in terms of the food available to a nonselective suspension feeder, such as M. edulis, during a seasonal cycle. The effect of inorganic silt in suspension was mainly to limit by dilution the amount of food material ingested rather than to reduce the amount of material filtered by the mussel. In winter, the food content of the material ingested was 5%, and this increased to 25% during the spring and summer.  相似文献

This study aims to determine the influence of the quality of food on specific dynamic action (SDA) in the ascidian Ciona intestinalis and thereby if respiratory measurements of SDA can be used to monitor the quality of a potential food source. Weight specific rates of filtration, ingestion and respiration of C. intestinalis were examined using two different experimental methods. Two food sources were selected, the flagellate Rhodomonas sp. representing a high-quality food source and the eelgrass Zostera marina representing a potentially low-quality food source. In spite of insignificant differences in weight specific rates of filtration and ingestion of Rhodomonas sp. and Z. marina, significant differences in weight specific respiration rates and weight specific ingestion rates of C. intestinalis at different particle concentrations of the two food sources were found. Ingestion of Rhodomonas sp. resulted in a SDA coefficient of 20%, whereas the respiratory increase after ingestion of Z. marina was insignificant. From the experimental results it is concluded that SDA of C. intestinalis is strongly dependent on the quality of the food ingested.Communicated by L. Hagerman, Helsingør  相似文献

Influence of food concentration (0.5, 1 and 2 x 105 cell ml–1 ofSkeletonema costatum), temperature (20 and 30°C) and salinity (15, 25 and 35) on the larval development ofBalanus amphitrite (Cirripedia: Thoracica) was examined. The mortality rate at 20°C was lower than at 30°C in general. Increase in food concentration from 0.5 to 1 x 105 cells ml–1 improved the survival rate, but this was not evident when food concentration was increased to 2 x 105 cells ml–1. The results indicate that food availability and temperature jointly determine the energy allocation for metamorphic progress. It was observed that the influence of the tested variables varied with instar. At 20 °C the mean duration of the second instar exceeded 3 d and was much longer than other instar durations. The fourth, fifth and sixth instars and the total naupliar period showed that the effect of different salinities at given food concentrations was negligible at 20°C, while at 30°C there was a marked decrease in duration with increasing salinity.  相似文献

Growth rates of anchovy larvae, Engraulis mordax, reared for 19 days under constant environmental conditions on a diet of laboratory-cultured organisms, exceeded the growth rates of anchovies fed on a diet of wild plankton. The rotifer Brachionus plicatilis was found to be a nutritous food source when fed to the larvae in concentrations of 10 to 20/ml and in combination with the dinoflagellate Gymnodinium splendens (100/ml). Optimum conditions were determined for mass culture of the rotifer. A high food concentration was the most important parameter needed to assure a high yield of rotifers. Large volumes (464 I) of the unicellular flagellate Dunaliella sp. were cultured for feeding the rotifers. The rotifer culture technique described produces approximately 2.5×106 organisms/day, providing a reliable food source for rearing studies. The lengths of B. plicatilis (without eggs) ranged between 99 and 281 , most rotifers being larger than 164 and less than 231 . Individuals weighed 0.16 g and contained 8×10-4 cal.  相似文献

To assess the fitness consequences of foraging on patchy resources, consumption rates, growth rates and survivorship of Armadillidium vulgare were monitored while feeding in arenas in which the spatial distribution of patches of high quality food (powdered dicotyledonous leaf litter) was varied within a matrix of low quality food (powdered grass leaf litter). Predictions from behavioural experiments that these fitness correlates would be lower when high quality food is more heterogeneously distributed in space were tested but not supported either by laboratory or field experiments. To investigate whether A. vulgare can develop the ability to relocate high quality food patches, changes in foraging behaviour, over a comparable time period to that used in the fitness experiments, were monitored in arenas in which there was a high quality food patch in a low quality matrix. A. vulgare increased its ability to relocate the position of high quality food over time. It reduced time spent in low quality food matrices and increased time spent in high quality food patches with time after the start of the experiment. When the position of a high quality food patch was moved, the time spent in the low quality food matrix increased and less time was spent in high quality food patches, compared to arenas in which the food was not moved. The fitness benefits for saprophages of developing the ability to relocate high quality patches while foraging in spatially heterogeneous environments are discussed.  相似文献
