The spatial scale of life-history and demographic variation was investigated in the opportunistic polychaete Ophryotrocha labronica La Greca and Bacci. Individuals were collected along the Italian coasts from three thermally different biogeographical regions of the Mediterranean Sea. For each region, populations from four harbours were considered, and for each harbour, two sites were examined. Life-history and demographic traits were investigated after one generation under a common garden experiment, and their variation at the three spatial scales was assessed. All the traits showed high variability with regard to site. A number of life-history and all demographic traits also varied according to the biogeographical region. Conversely, no differences were found between harbours, suggesting that geographical isolation did not contribute to phenotypic variation. Results confirmed the central role of local conditions for the evolution of life history in species colonizing heterogeneous environments, but they also pointed to the importance of large-scale factors in shaping the phenotypic responses of O. labronica, demonstrating the need for a multi-scale approach for obtaining a good measure of natural variation in widespread opportunistic species.  相似文献

Reproductive effort in terms of fecundity and energy allocation was studied in Ophryotrocha labronica La Greca and Bacci, 1962 a small, semicontinuous iteroparous species. In O. labronica fecundity is more or less constant throughout life, and the total fecundity of the 64 couples examined in this experiment only declined by 12% from the first to the last spawning. No linear relationship was found between fecundity and body size.␣The energy content of germinal and somatic tissues was determined by differential scanning calorimeter. The␣reproductive effort and a reproductive index based on the fifth spawning were evaluated to compare the␣patterns of energy allocation of a semicontinuous iteroparous species with semelparous and annual iteroparous species. The reproductive index ranged from 0.20 to 0.77, with an average of 0.480. The average reproductive effort was 0.840, ranging from 0.60 to 0.96. These figures highlight the enormous amount of energy that O. labronica allocates to reproductive tissues. Received: 23 July 1997 / Accepted: 20 October 1998  相似文献

The intertidal polychaete Euzonus mucronata (Treadwell) is found in great numbers within beach sands that undergo periodic anoxia. Short-term exposures (2 to 4 h) to anaerobicity are withstood through the use of a supply of oxyhemoglobin to support continued aerobic metabolism. Longer periods of environmental anoxia activate an anaerobic metabolism capable of sustaining life for up to 20 days, and characterized by the excretion of succinate and propionate. These two mechanisms appear to be adaptations to the variations in occurrence and duration of anoxia within the intertidal sands inhabited by E. mucronata.Supported by an NSF Graduate Fellowship, 1973–1974.  相似文献

Intact young males of Ophryotrocha puerilis Clap. Mecz. which are about to reach the female phase are capable of producing oocytes even under conditions of fasting. Intact isolated females may change sex under fasting conditions; their oocytes are not shed but resorbed. Decerebrated males which are about to reach the female phase at the moment of decerebration are unable to develop oocytes. Decerebrated females begin earlier with the production of spermatozoa than females under fasting conditions. The oocytes of decapitated females are either resorbed (young females with oocytes ranging in diameter up to 60 μm), or shed in egg masses capable of development after fertilization (older females with oocytes of 90 μm diameter or more). The effect of decerebration on females is compensated completely by implantation of isolated prostomia from female donors. Decerebrated males with implanted isolated prostomia from female donors immediately start oocyte production; these oocytes are not shed. In the majority of cases, decerebrated females change to the male phase after implantation of prostomia isolated from male donors. The mutual influence of a pair depends on direct contact of the partners. In isolated females, anterior fragments, consisting of prostomia and some segments, may induce change of sex and shedding of oocytes. On the other hand, intact females may induce sex reversal in anterior fragments. Even isolated prostomia from female donors may induce change of sex in intact females. A possible influence of intact females upon isolated prostomia was not found. Intact females and decerebrated females with implanted prostomia from female donors exhibit no mutual influence when placed together.  相似文献

The brine shrimp Artemia salina L. and the polychaete worm Ophryotrocha labronica La Greca and Bacci were acclimated in sea water with copper sulphate at concentrations of 0.1, 0.05, and 0.025 ppm Cu++, for 3 and 2 generations, respectively. Both adults and larvae of A. salina showed a greater tolerance to 1 ppm Cu++ after acclimation compared to controls of the same age, although this tolerance diminished in successive generations. The acclimation effect was less marked in O. labronica. In both species, tolerance to 10 ppm Cu++ upwards was not enhanced. Growth-rate inhibition and an adverse effect on reproduction was observed, in some instances in direct relationship to the acclimation concentration. It is suggested that, in A. salina, a certain tolerance to copper may be acquired through exposure to low concentrations.  相似文献

Polychaetes constitute most of the benthic macroinvertebrates in estuarine and coastal environments. We investigated the utilization of organic matter in two polychaete species, Capitella sp. I and Perinereis nuntia brevicirris, living in different coastal habitats. The protease activity of Capitella sp. I (89.7 μg mg−1) was about 10 times that of P. nuntia brevicirris (8.0 μg mg−1). High cellulase (endo-β-1,4-glucanase) activity was detected in P. nuntia brevicirris (3.2 μg mg−1), whereas scarcely any was detected in Capitella sp. I. We isolated cDNA clones of protease mRNA from Capitella sp. I and of cellulase mRNA from P. nuntia brevicirris. The high protease activity of Capitella sp. I enabled it to survive in the sediment under a fish farm, where it degrades organic matter. In contrast, the high cellulase activity of the estuary-dwelling P. nuntia brevicirris allowed it to degrade organic matter originating from terrestrial areas.  相似文献

A population of Cirratulus cirratus (O. F. Müller) was sampled from September 1966 to September 1968. The population is found intertidally in crevices at Cullercoats Bay, Northumberland (UK). Measurements of the sexual maturity and size of the animals have been made. The breeding season is not restricted, spawning occurs in the population asynchronously throughout the year. Ripe worms and worms that have just spawned are invariably present, but the majority of females are always at intermediate stages of oogenesis. Adult males, however, always contain active spermatozoa. Females, but not males, are devoid of coelomic gametes after spawning; a new generation of coelomic oocytes begin to accumulate in the coelom after 30 days. The growth of the coelomic oocytes is relatively slow, the coelomic phase of oocyte development takes between 1 and 2 years for completion. The coelomoducts which serve for the emission of the gametes are described. An interpretation of the female population structure based upon length and sexual maturity data suggests that most females survive to spawn 2 or 3 times, and some to spawn 4 or 5 times. They grow in length by about 2 cm in the period between successive spawnings. The reproduction of Cirratulus cirratus is compared with that of other annelid species breeding throughout the year, and this unusual mode of reproduction is discussed.  相似文献

The present study was aimed at obtaining new information on the feeding biology of the terebellid polychaete Eupolymnia nebulosa (Montagu). Feeding, tube-building, particle-size selection, and tentacular morphology are described. Experiments were carried out during the fall of 1984 on specimens collected in the vicinity of Banyuls-surmer, France. Feeding activity takes place almost entirely in darkness, and E. nebulosa shows a marked preference for smaller particles when feeding and selects larger ones for tube-building. The control of its activity pattern by light intensity may result in seasonal modification of its energy balance. The mechanisms controlling particle-size selection in this species are discussed.  相似文献

North Sea and Baltic Sea populations of the introduced polychaete Marenzelleria viridis (Verrill, 1873) reproduce at different times (spring and autumn, respectively). Enzyme separation by starch gel electrophoresis revealed major differences between specimens from the Baltic Sea and those from the North Sea (collected in 1992 and 1993) but a high degree of homogeneity among populations from the same sea. Three enzyme loci, glucose-6-phosphate isomerase (GPI-A, GPI-B) and malate dehydrogenase (MDH), were fixed to 100% by different alleles in the North and Baltic Sea populations, respectively. Different alleles are dominant for mitochondrial aspartate aminotransferase (mAAT) with allele frequencies of ca. 0.97 in all sampled populations from the North Sea and Baltic Sea, respectively, but heterozygotes were found in all populations. These genetic differences could be due to environmentally induced selection or genetically different origins of the populations, suggesting that populations of the genus Marenzelleria in the North and Baltic Seas may be two different species.  相似文献

A population of Capitella capitata (Fabricius) was sampled from January, 1973 to February, 1974. Size of the worms was measured and sexual maturity determined. There is an extensive breeding season, spawning occurring asynchronously throughout the year. Females containing ripe oocytes were almost always present, but most females at any one time contained immature oocytes. A high percentage of males contained active sperm. Oocytes are not released into the coelomic fluid until almost fully developed, and all are released at a single spawning. A large number of eggs are produced at each spawning and there is some evidence to suggest that larval development may be completely benthonic. Gametes first develop in 7 to 8 month old worms and take about 4 months to complete development. Analyses of the female population structure suggests that there are 3 breeding classes. The growth rate is estimated at 30 mm per year, and few worms are believed to survive longer than 2 years.  相似文献

Adaptation of the polychaete worm Scoloplos armiger to hypoxic conditions   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The anaerobic metabolism of the intertidal polychaete Scoloplos armiger, its recovery from anaerobiosis and the importance of anaerobic energy production during low tide in the field were investigated. Under anaerobic conditions S. armiger produces energy in the same manner as Arenicola marina, a prototype of an euryoxic invertebrate from the intertidal. Energy is produced from the phosphagen stores and from the breakdown of glycogen to volatile fatty acids, mainly propionate and to a lesser extend acetate. However, S. armiger cannot reduce its energy demand to the same degree as A. marina. This and the relatively small pool of glycogen may be the reason for its only moderate resistance to anoxia. The recovery from anaerobiosis proceeds in S. armiger significantly slower than in A. marina. S. armiger is able to maintain a fully aerobic metabolism down to a PwO 2of ca. 20 torr and even at a PwO 2of 10 torr a partly aerobic metabolism was retained. In the field during low tide S. armiger ascends into the oxidative layer, where it is able to maintain an aerobic metabolism even at parts without remaining puddels on the surface.  相似文献

The serpulid polychaete Hydroides elegans Haswell, 1883 is an early colonist of new substrata in Pearl Harbor, Oahu, Hawaii. When metamorphically competent, larvae of H. elegans will settle rapidly upon an acceptably biofilmed surface, but not on a clean surface. In this study we found the ability of larvae to respond selectively to inductive surfaces to be retained for at least 3 wk. Of a series of bacterial strains isolated from Hawaiian marine biofilms, 13 induced larval settlement, 11 gave moderate or mixed results, and 10 others did not stimulate the settlement of H. elegans. The amount of settlement induced by monospecific strains was rarely as great as with natural, multispecies films. Most of the isolated bacteria were motile Gram-negative rods, but Gram-positive strains were also present, and diverse metabolic types were represented in the study. Biofilms killed by treatment with heat, ultraviolet radiation or chemical fixatives were no longer inductive. Soluble, dialyzable, heat-stable bacterial products induced settlement and metamorphosis more slowly. The range of bacteria producing an inductive signal suggests either that there are multiple cues, or that the cue is common to many bacteria. Chemical signals characteristic of early microbial biofilms may indicate freshly available substrata with optimal potential for the growth and survival of H. elegans. The diversity of soft-bottom polychaete assemblages in one Antarctic (Admiralty Bay) and two Arctic (Kongsfjord and van Mijenfjord) localities was compared. The data sets included 79 (Admiralty Bay), 80 (Kongsfjord) and 44 (van Mijenfjord) samples collected with use of 0.1 m2 van Veen grab. The number of species per sample in Kongsfjord (mean 19.9 ± 8.0 SD) was higher than that in Van Mijenfjord (13.7 ± 8.3) or Admiralty Bay (15.7 ± 9.4). The differences in species numbers reflected differences in numbers of individuals in samples: 310.4 ind/0.1 m2 ± 178.0 in Kongsfjord, 132.7 ind/0.1 m2 ± 88.7 in Van Mijenfjord and 138.9 ind/0.1 m2 ± 91.5 in Admiralty Bay. The Hurlbert diversity for 50 individuals (ES [50]) was similar at all sites: 10.7 ± 3.4 in Kongsfjord, 9.7 ± 4.2 in van Mijenfjord, 10.5 ± 4.9 in Admiralty Bay. The shape of species accumulation curves was also similar for all localities. There was no significant difference (at P < 0.05) either in the total number of species or in species richness as estimated by Chao1 and Chao2 estimators. The generic and family richness at three sites was also similar. We found no substantial differences in the distribution of species among families. At both poles Terebellidae, Ampharetidae, Maldanidae, Spionidae and Polynoidae were dominant in terms of species numbers. The similarity of infaunal polychaete diversity at the polar sites studied contrasts with the substantial differences reported for epi-megafauna. Our study suggests that the patterns of diversity of polar benthic communities are shaped by patterns of habitat heterogeneity which appears to mask any historical processes.  相似文献

Distribution and feeding in the onuphid polychaete,Diopatra cuprea (Bosc)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Population density of the onuphid polychaete Diopatra cuprea is poorly correlated with particle size distribution of the substratum. It varies directly, however, with current velocity. Measurements of the volume of oxygen drawn through the tube by the inhabitants' rhythmic activities, and the volume consumed under similar conditions, indicate that the rate of oxygen utilization is unusually low; therefore, the influence of current velocity cannot be exerted through its effect on oxygen supply. We suggest that the worm's tube, which protrudes several centimeters above the substratum in the form of an inverted hook, is a food-catching device whose efficiency is governed by the volume of water flowing past. This hypothesis is supported by the identity of many species found both in the gut and on the tube. We also suggest that the tube-irrigating activities permit the animal to test the medium for the presence of chemical stimuli emanating from food caught by the tube; supra-threshold concentrations of these stimuli elicit the feeding response.  相似文献

A 3-year study was conducted on a population of Nicolea zostericola (Oersted: Grube, 1860) at Nahant, Massachusetts (USA), which indicated that this species has a life span of about 1 year. Spawing occurred from mid-April to early July, after a rise in sea-water temperature to about 6°C. Pair formation occurred between sexually mature adults prior to and during spawning. Eggs were deposited in cocoons, where development occurred in 14 to 22 days. Larval develomment is described along with juvenile and adult substrate preferences and behavior. The entire intertidal population disappears following the spawning season in late June, and reappears in September as a result of migration of worms from the sub-littoral zone. Oogenesis consists of 3 phases: a short gonadal and follicular phase, followed by a longer vitellogenic phase during which oocytes are free-floating in the coelomic fluid.Contribution no. 31 from the Marine Science Institute, Northeastern University, Nahant, Massachusetts, USA.  相似文献

Effects of food quality on fecundity (defined as the number of eggs deposited in the entire life of a female), egg size and egg energy content (measured by differential scanning calorimeter were studied in two populations of Ophryotrocha labronica (La Greca and Bacci): one taken from the natural environment immediately prior to the experiment, and the other from the same original environment, but bred for more than 5␣years in the laboratory. Results indicated that fecundity is mediated both by food quality and population origin. Specimens fed Tetramin generally spawned more frequently than those receiving the other two diets, while individuals bred in the laboratory since 1990 spawned more frequently than the wild population. Also the number of eggs per spawning and the total fecundity vary with the quality of the diet; Tetramin gives the highest fecundity values. The differences in egg size and energy content seem essentially related to the population origin, in fact, with all diets laboratory specimens produced larger eggs with higher energy contents than wild specimens. This study presents the first quantification of the diet of a gelatinous midwater organism on a temporal basis. Using the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute's remotely operated vehicle Ventana, regular collections of the polychaete Poeobius meseres (Heath, 1930) over a 1 yr period (October 1990 to November 1991) in Monterey Bay yielded intact organisms for the study of feeding behavior and quantitative analysis of stomach contents. In situ observations showed P. meseres feeding in two different ways: (1) by deployment of a mucus web in the water column that passively collects particles for consumption; and/or (2) by grasping detrital material in the water column with its ciliated tentacles. Stomach-content analyses showed that P. meseres is primarily coprophagic, its diet being dominated by fecal pellets from euphausiids and copepods. These fecal pellets appear to provide P. meseres with essentially all its carbon. Although fecal pellets were the most important food item volumetrically, P. meseres also consumed large numbers of diatoms and small numbers of dinoflagellates, chrysophytes, radiolarians, foraminiferans and eggs. The diet of P. meseres appears to reflect primary productivity in the surface waters, with different food items predominant in the diet at different times of the year. Pennate diatoms were most abundant in the diet during the fall, centric diatoms were most abundant during the sumnier, and fecal pellets during the winter. The composition of P. meseres diet suggests that this and other midwater gelatinous organisms have a significant role in the remineralization of particles as they sink from the surface to the deep sea.  相似文献

The resistance to high temperatures of two species of intertidal tube-dwelling polychaete worms has been tested to show seasonal and geographic variations. The summer 50% survival temperature at Beaufort, North Carolina, was 42.5 °C for Diopatra cuprea (Bosc) and 40.5 °C for Clymenella torquata (Leidy). Winter 50% survival temperatures for both species at Beaufort were approximately 4.0 C° lower. Both species showed a geographic difference in 50% survival temperature of more than 4.0 C° between North Carolina and Massachusetts in summer. D. cuprea from the Mississippi coast showed a lower survival temperature, probably due to combined temperature and salinity effects. Laboratory acclimation of C. torquata from Beaufort at low temperatures, during summer months, produced experimental results similar to those from winter animals. The seasonal differences in temperature tolerance are phenotypic expressions of a physiological response which can be related to environmental temperature patterns.  相似文献
