To investigate the natural defenses of Antarctic marine organisms against exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation (280 to 320 nm), 57 species (1 fish, 48 invertebrates, and 8 algae) were collected during austral spring 1988 in the vicinity of Palmer Station (Anvers Island, Antarctic Peninsula) and were analyzed for the presence of mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs), compounds that absorb UV radiation and may provide shielding from these biologically hazardous wavelengths. Nearly 90% of the 57 species examined contained MAAs, and eight specific MAA compounds were identified. Seven of these (palythine, porphyra-334, shinorine, mycosporineglycine, palythene, asterina-330, and palythinol) have been observed previously in marine organisms from temperate and tropical latitudes. A new MAA, mycosporineglycine: valine, was found in the Antarctic fish and in 38 of the invertebrate species examined. This study confirms widespread occurrence of MAAs in Antarctic marine organisms and suggests that these species have some degree of natural biochemical protection from UV exposure.Contribution No. 502 from the Australian Institute of Marine Science  相似文献

The bioaccumulation of ultraviolet radiation-absorbing mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) by Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis (Müller) was determined in specimens maintained on MAA-rich and MAA-deficient diets. Individuals were fed either the red alga Mastocarpus stellatus (Stackhouse), which has a high concentration of the MAA shinorine (6.98 nmolmg–1 dry wt), and trace amounts of the MAAs porphyra-334, asterina-330 and palythine, or the brown alga Laminaria saccharina (Lamouroux), which contains no detectable MAAs. Reproductively spent urchins were fed ad libitum during a 9 mo period in 1992 to 1993 until they were once again gravid. To monitor accumulation, samples of urchin tissues and ingested food were taken throughout the 9 mo period from males and females maintained on each diet, and the concentrations of MAAs determined using high performance liquid chromatography. Urchins maintained on a diet of M. stellatus showed an ovarian shinorine concentration (8.33 nmol mg–1 dry wt) 25 times higher than those fed L. saccharina. There was no change in MAA content of testes or somatic tissues in either feeding group. More than 99% of the MAAs present in an experimental meal of M. stellatus were removed during passage through the gut. Previous studies have inferred dietary accumulation of MAAs by comparing MAAs present in animal tissues with the consumer's potential diet in the field. This is the first study to have monitored MAA accumulation in animal tissues in conjunction with a controlled diet having a known MAA composition. Concentrating MAAs in the ovaries may provide eggs released into the water column with protection from damaging solar ultraviolet radiation.  相似文献

Field sampling and laboratory experiments examined whether ultraviolet radiation (UVR) affects the reproduction or the accumulation of mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) and ascorbic acid in ovaries of the green sea urchin Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis (Müller). Ovaries of sea urchins sampled across a depth gradient (0.5–10 m) in March 1998 did not differ in their gonadal index, or in concentrations of MAAs, or ascorbic acid. Concentrations of MAAs and ascorbic acid in ovaries were higher in sea urchins collected from a kelp bed compared with those collected from a community of crustose coralline algae. The concentrations of MAAs in ovaries varied seasonally, peaking in March, when sea urchins had high gonadal indices just before spawning. Ovaries of sea urchins maintained on controlled diets from October 1997 to April 1998 accumulated significantly higher concentrations of MAAs when fed a diet rich in MAAs than did ovaries of sea urchins fed an alga lacking MAAs, but the gonadal indices did not differ between diets. Sea urchins accumulated principally one MAA, shinorine, but not others that were available in high concentrations in their diet. Neither the gonadal index nor the ovarian concentrations of MAAs were affected by daily exposure of adult urchins to UVR for 6 months. Concentrations of ascorbic acid in ovaries did not differ among diets or UV-treatments. The percentages of nutritive phagocytes and gametic cells were not affected by diet or UVR, and did not co-vary with concentrations of MAAs or ascorbic acid in ovaries. These data support previous demonstrations that female sea urchins accumulate MAAs from their diet of macroalgae, but further show that the accumulation is selective for specific MAAs, particularly shinorine, and that adult S. droebachiensis do not accumulate MAAs in their ovaries or eggs in response to UV-exposure. These are also the first experimental studies to address whether MAAs are affected by or regulate gametogenesis, and indicate that they do not. From September to November 1991, UV-absorbing mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) were monitored in a natural population of the sea urchin Sterechinusneumayeri from a coastal area of Anvers Island (Antarctic Peninsula). MAA concentrations were determined for specific tissues (gonad, digestive tract and body wall) from adults collected at four depths (intertidal, 8, 15 and 24 m). Four MAAs were identified: mycosporine-glycine, shinorine, porphyra-334 and paly-thine. Concentrations of MAAs among replicate individuals varied considerably. Ovaries had high concentrations of MAAs (84 to 1389 μg g−1 dry wt), while testes had non-detectable levels. The relative abundance of specific MAAs in ovaries appeared to be related to the spawning cycle. Digestive-tract samples had MAA concentrations as high as 3000 μg g−1 dry wt, but the mean MAA content in intertidal individuals decreased by 70% over 3 mo during spring. The body walls of sea urchins had very low amounts of MAAs (≤ 0.08 μg g−1 dry wt). There were significant depth differences in the␣total MAA content of the ovary ( p <0.001), ( p <0.015), digestive tract ( p <0.001), and body wall with organisms from the intertidal and 8 m depth having the highest concentrations of MAAs. Biological dosimetry indicated that UV-B (280 to 320 nm) wavelengths penetrated 3 to 7 m below the sea ice during the study period. The total MAA content in ovaries decreased with depth on all sample dates; however, the MAA content of the digestive tract and body wall did not exhibit a consistent pattern of change with depth. The MAA content of tissues did not change significantly with the temporal gradient of light exposure that was established by both ozone depletion and increasing photoperiod, except in the digestive tract sampled from intertidal specimens. Adult urchins are probably well-protected from UV exposure by the water column and a calcareous test; however, the results of this study suggest that, even under ice cover, depth of habitation is a determinant of MAA content in S. neumayeri. Large daily and seasonal fluctuations in the light regime, which are characteristic of Antarctic coastal environments, apparently do not provide reliable cues to elicit a detectable, temporal, biochemical response. The epidermal tissues, ovaries, viscera, gut contents, and the diet of Holothuria atra (Jaeger), collected from the Great Barrier Reef (GBR), Australia, just prior to spawning, contained carotenoid pigments, mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) and three other metabolites in varying proportions. Mycosporine-glycine (mycosporine-gly), palythine, asterina-330, shinorine, mycosporine-2-gly, porphyra-334, and palythinol were present in the epidermal tissues. Mycosporine-gly was the major MAA in the epidermal tissues, gut contents and the diet, and the only MAA present in the ripe ovaries and the viscera. Gadusol, a metabolite with antioxidant properties, which co-occurs with MAAs, and in certain instances with trace amounts of 6-deoxygadusol in unfertilised and fertilised eggs and developing larvae of some marine invertebrates and vertebrates, was absent from H. atra. However, 6-deoxygadusol, with similar physical and chemical properties to gadusol, and the proposed biosynthetic precursor of MAAs, was present, but only in the ovaries. This is first report of the presence of this proposed biogenetic precursor of MAAs in significant amounts in a marine invertebrate. Approximately 90% of the total carotenoids of the epidermal tissues, ovaries and viscera of H. atra are highly oxidised, the main component being astaxanthin followed by canthaxanthin. These were the major carotenoids present in the ovaries and the total carotenoid content was highest in the ovaries. β-carotene, a common egg carotenoid, was present in trace quantities in the ovaries but, along with the xanthophylls lutein and zeaxanthin, it occurred in significant amounts in the gut contents and the diet of H. atra. Carotenoid patterns in the epidermal tissues and viscera were strikingly similar, containing β-carotene, canthaxanthin, astaxanthin, zeaxanthin, lutein, phoenicoxanthin and echinenone. The alkaloids homarine and isomeric trigonelline, (structurally unrelated to MAAs) and 6-deoxygadusol were present only in the ovaries and the viscera. It is suggested that these metabolites and pigments are either involved with photoprotection or reproduction, or associated with both processes. The origin, biogenetic relationships and the roles of these metabolites and pigments in H. atra are discussed. Received: 21 November 1997 / Accepted: 14 September 1998  相似文献

Many tropical cnidarians living in shallow water contain a class of ultraviolet-A (UV-A, 320 to 400 nm) and ultraviolet-B (UV-B, 280 to 320 nm) absorbing compounds known as mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs). These compounds may provide protection from the deleterious effects of solar UV radiation. Using a novel application of reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatography, we find that the temperate sea anemoneAnthopleura elegantissima (collected in 1988 from Bodega Bay, California, and in 1991 from Santa Barbara, California) contains four major MAAs: shinorine, porphyra-334, and two new compounds, mycosporine-taurine and mycosporine-2 glycine. Analysis of zooxanthellate (containing zooxanthellae) and naturally apozooxanthellate (lacking zooxanthellae) specimens acclimated in the presence and absence of UV for 28 d in the spring of 1988 suggests that this anemone, unlike some other anthozoans, does not regulate the concentration of its MAAs in response to UV radiation. The presence of similar concentration of MAAs in apozooxanthellate and zooxanthellate specimens indicates that symbiosis with algae is not required for these compounds to be present in the anemone. The total concentration of MAAs in the zooxanthellae is only about 12% of that in their host's tissues.  相似文献

Experiments were performed to determine how ultraviolet radiation (UVR) in the environmentally relevant range affects development of the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis (Müller) and whether mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs), present in the early life stages, reduce UV-induced damage. Eggs, embryos, and larvae contained five MAAs having absorption maxima ranging from 320 to 334 nm. Eggs contained principally shinorine and porphyra-334, which absorb maximally at 334 nm and half-maximally at 312 and 348 nm, spanning much of the environmental range of biologically effective UVR. Concentrations of MAAs remained constant in unirradiated embryos through the gastrula stage, but decreased significantly in two-armed pluteus larvae. Daily exposure to combined photosynthetically active radiation (PAR, 400–700 nm) and UVR did not affect the concentration of MAAs in these embryos up to the two-armed pluteus stage. Prism larvae of sea urchins and the sand dollar Echinarachnius parma (Lamarck) did not accumulate shinorine from the surrounding seawater. Daily exposure of embryos to UVA (320–400 nm) and UVB (295–320 nm) radiation in the presence of PAR induced delays and abnormalities during development, and removing UVB eliminated this effect. Abnormalities in embryos included thickening of the blastoderm wall, filling of the blastocoel by abnormal cells, exogastrulation, and formation of abnormal spicules. The percentage of embryos that developed normally was lower in batches of embryos exposed to PAR + UVA + UVB, except in embryos from urchins maintained on MAA-rich diets. In all cases, the percentage of PAR + UVA + UVB-exposed embryos that developed normally was positively related to the concentration of MAAs in eggs from which the embryos developed. Thus, the MAAs found in S. droebachiensis embryos protect them against UVB-induced abnormalities during their development to at least the four-armed pluteus larval stage. We tested the hypothesis that ultraviolet-absorbing compounds known as mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) are not only synthesized but also excreted by marine phytoplankton. An experiment was performed with cultures of the marine dinoflagellateLingulodinium polyedra (previously known asGonyaulax polyedra) exposed to visible (photosynthetically available, PAR, 400 to 700 nm) and ultraviolet (UV, 290 to 400 nm) radiation. Absorption properties of both particulate and dissolved organic matter pools (POM and DOM, respectively) showed maxima in ultraviolet absorption at 360 nm. Chromatographic analysis confirmed the presence of MAAs in both pools. Release of organic matter byL. polyedra, as measured spectrophotometrically by changes in UV absorption in the surrounding medium, showed a differential increase at 360 nm in cultures exposed to UV-B + PAR radiation. The changes in absorption in the DOM fraction were inversely proportional to intracellular UV absorption. Photodegradation experiments in which the DOM fraction was exposed to visible and UV-B radiation showed a decrease in absorption with dose. First-order photooxidation decay rates varied between – 0.005 and – 0.26 m2 (mol quanta)–1 and were also a function of the initial optical density (OD). These results indicate that UV-absorbing compounds synthesized by phytoplankton, such as certain dinoflagellates, may be a component of the DOM pool in surface waters of the ocean and contribute to the attenuation of UV radiation in the water column. Photooxidation consumes only 3 to 10% of the daily production of the DOM absorbing between 280 and 390 nm (including MAAs). This suggests that MAAs dissolved in seawater may contribute to the decrease of UV transmission through the water column on a time scale representative of phytoplankton growth (days) and bloom development (weeks).  相似文献

Mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs), which occur in diverse taxonomic groups, exhibit in vivo absorption maxima between 310 nm and 360 nm and may play a photoprotective role against ultraviolet (UV) exposure. Using cultures of colonial Phaeocystis antarctica, we examined the relationship between MAA concentration, in vivo UV absorption, photoprotective (carotenoid) and photosynthetic pigments, and photosynthetically available radiation (PAR, 350–700 nm). UV absorption was high; chlorophyll-specific absorption, a * ph, at 330 nm ranged from 0.06 to 0.41 m2/mg chlorophyll a. Values of a * ph (330) were 4–13 times greater than a * ph (676). Mycosporine-glycine, shinorine, and mycosporine-glycine valine are responsible for the strong in vivo UV absorption. The sum of all MAAs increased with irradiance when normalized to chlorophyll a or carbon concentrations, whereas individual MAAs varied independently from each other. Mycosporine-glycine concentrations showed no statistically significant change over the range of light intensities, whereas mycosporine-glycine and shinorine concentrations increased at higher irradiances. The relative fluorescence yield for chlorophyll a was low in the UV region compared to the visible region, implying that absorbed UV radiation (<375 nm) is transferred inefficiently to chlorophyll a in the reaction center. Quantitative estimates of UV screening by MAAs are attributed to elevated MAA concentrations and increased diameter at high light. Received: 31 March 1999 / Accepted: 13 July 2000  相似文献

The flow of particulate nitrogen from marine net pen fish farm effluents to the surrounding biofouling community was quantified by means of stable isotopes of nitrogen. Plastic mesh substrates were deployed at 8 m depth near a sea bream fish farm and at a nearby reference site in the northern Gulf of Aqaba (Red Sea) to assess whether natural fouling organisms could sequester substantial quantities of farm-derived particulate nitrogen waste. A mixing equation, incorporating differences in nitrogen stable isotope composition, δ15N, between particulate organic matter (“source”) and fouling organisms (“sink”) at the fish farm and reference site, was used to estimate the amount of farm-derived nitrogen that was incorporated by the fouling community. Among the conspicuous fouling organisms examined, sponges, tunicates and polychaetes showed greatest uptake of fish farm N, where the mean fractions of farm-derived N estimated over the 2-year period of observation were 19±7, 22±6 and 31±8% of total organisms’ N content, respectively, with maximal recorded seasonal values of 68, 85 and 57%, respectively. Mean N uptake by mixed fouling communities (conspicuous + cryptic organisms) was as much as fivefold higher than that calculated for the sum of conspicuous taxa, suggesting that the retention efficiency is greater in mixed than in mono-specific biofouling communities.  相似文献

The effect of ammonium concentration on photosynthetic activity estimated as in vivo chlorophyll fluorescence, i.e. maximal quantum yield (Fv/Fm) and electron transport rate (ETR) and on the accumulation of mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs), chlorophyll a (chl a), biliproteins (BP) and soluble proteins (SP) in the red algae Porphyra leucosticta Thuret in Le Jolis collected from Lagos (Málaga, Spain) and Porphyra umbilicalis (Linnaeus) J. Agardh from Helgoland (Germany) was evaluated. Discs of both species were incubated with three ammonium concentrations (0, 100 and 300 µM) under artificial PAR and UV radiation for 7 days. Photosynthetic activity decreased under the culture conditions due to UV radiation and ammonium availability. The decrease of both Fv/Fm and maximal ETR was related to ammonium supply, i.e. the lowest decrease occurred in algae growing with the highest concentration of ammonium. In both species, after 7 days of culture, the content of chl a, BP and SP was higher under 300 µM than that under 0 and 100 µM ammonium. In both species, the content of MAAs was increased under 300 µM ammonium compared to the initial value, whereas a decrease under 0 and 100 µM ammonium was observed only in P. leucosticta. The content of MAAs in P. umbilicalis did not present significant differences compared to the initial value, probably because of the high initial content of MAAs. In both Porphyra species, four MAAs were identified: shinorine, porphyra-334, palythine and asterina-330. However, P. leucosticta modified its MAA pattern during the incubation time, reaching the same percentages found for P. umbilicalis, which did not show any change during the experimental period. P. leucosticta exhibited a decrease in BP/SP and BP/chl a ratios through the incubation time and an increase in MAAs/BP. The ratio MAAs/chl a did not show any variation with time or treatment, as was also true for all ratios in P. umbilicalis. In summary, ammonium supply diminished the decrease of Fv/Fm, increased the content of photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll and biliprotein) and soluble protein, and stimulated of the accumulation of MAAs in the red algae P. leucosticta and P. umbilicalis.Communicated by O. To determine the pharmacokinetics of a small lipophilic molecule in vivo, the distribution and accumulation of 99mTc-radiolabelled disofenin (diisopropylacetanilide iminodiacetic acid) were traced during 1991–1992 by scintigraphy and gamma well counting in winter flounder (Pleuronectes americanus collected from Boston Harbor and Long Island Sound in 1992), lobsters (Homarus americanus collected from Massachusetts Bay in 1991), and soft-shell clams (Mya arenaria purchased in 1991). The agent was distributed throughout the bodies of lobsters within 12 s, throughout flounder within 40 s, and throughout clams within 2 min. It was concentrated most strongly by the liver of flounder, which contained 61.2±7.8% of the injected dose within 1 h of injection, and by the lobster hepatopancreas. Accumulation also occurred in the flounder kidney, lobster antennal glands, and the kidney and pericardial glands of clams. The compound was rapidly excreted from the flounder liver into the gall bladder, and from the lobster hepatopancreas into the stomach. The data suggest its excretion from the lobster antennal glands and clam kidneys. The rate of clearance of disofenin from the body varied among species: 99±2.1% of the initial dose remained in flounder sampled 16 to 24 h after injection, compared to 80.5±7% remaining in the lobster after 15 h, and 87.4±5.9% remaining in clams after 27 h. The clearance rates in flounder and lobster are considered to be minimum values because of the lack of gut activity in unfed individuals. Overall, these in vivo tracer studies establish the utility of scintigraphy for assessing the uptake and excretion of a lipid soluble compound in different taxa, and may be applicable for evaluating disease and/or environmental effects on organ function in marine animals.  相似文献

Cooling water chlorination and productivity of entrained phytoplankton   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
A study to determine the effects of various concentrations of chlorine on the productivity of entrained marine phytoplankton was carried out at a nuclear power station on northeastern Long Island Sound, USA. Chlorine is a biocide used to control the growth of marine fouling organisms on the walls of many power station cooling systems. Chlorine concentrations considerably below those required to eliminate fouling organisms produced large decreases in the productivity of entrained phytoplankton. Generally, between 0.25 and 0.75 ppm residual chlorine at the cooling water discharge, continuously applied, is required to eliminate fouling organisms. At the highest chlorine concentration tested, 0.4 ppm residual at discharge (addition of chlorine at 1.2 ppm at cooling water intake), there was an 83% decrease in productivity as compared with the productivity at the intake. Productivity measurements were made at 6 other continuously applied chlorine concentrations. At the lowest concentration tested, too low to measure with our analytical method (addition of chlorine at 0.1 ppm at the intake), we measured a production decrease of 79%. Thus, a decrease in chlorination dosage of over an order of magnitude produced essentially no reduction in the damage done to entrained phytoplankton. Application of chlorine intermittently produced somewhat less of a decrease in primary productivity. When there was no chlorine addition during the period of study, there was essentially no effect on productivity. These data indicate that chlorine cannot be used effectively as a biocide for fouling organisms without having adverse effects on entrained phytoplankton.Contribution No. 2838 of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.  相似文献

A new concept based on analysis of dive depth data was developed to help estimate prey consumption in ten free-ranging Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) that were brooding chicks. By simultaneously analysing the undulations in the dive depth profile (measured by time-depth recorders, TDRs) and beak opening (obtained from the recently developed intra-mandibular angle sensors, IMASEN), it was possible to determine the proportions of the undulations in the dive profile that resulted (or not) in prey capture. This methodology allowed the number of prey consumed to be estimated with a mean error of 10±6% using TDR data alone. If the mean mass of prey is known, then the overall mass of prey consumed per unit time can be determined. Additionally, the method allows estimation of the depth at which prey is taken and thus indicates how penguins exploit the water column. Due to its simplicity, the proposed methodology has applications for other Spheniscus penguin species and should be considered for other marine endotherm divers that show undulations in the dive depth profile.Communicated by O. We investigated mycosporine amino acid (MAA) involvement as protective sunscreens in spawn of the sea hare Aplysia dactylomela to determine if adult diet and ultraviolet (UV) exposure affected the UV sensitivity of developing embryos. Adults were fed a red alga rich in MAAs (Acanthophora spicifera) or a green alga poor in MAAs (Ulva lactuca). Adults on each diet were exposed for 2 wk to ambient solar irradiance with two types of acrylic filters; one allowed exposure to wavelengths >275 nm (designated UV) and one to wavelengths only >410 nm (designated NOUV). Spawn from each adult group was likewise treated with UV or NOUV and monitored during development for differences in mortality and metabolic rate (measured as oxygen consumption: O2). Also recorded were number of eggs or embryos per capsule, times to hatching, hatching success, size at hatching, and O2 of adults. Spawn from adults eating red algae was almost twice as rich in MAAs as spawn from adults eating green algae, suggesting that MAA content is diet-related. Although overall quantities of MAAs in the spawn reflected MAA contents of the adult diet, specific MAAs were differentially sequestered in the spawn. Thus, porphyra-334, found in high concentration in Aplysia dactylomela's preferred red algal food, was present in only low concentration in the spawn. Conversely, mycosporine-glycine, in low concentration in red algal food, was the most abundant MAA in the spawn. UV treatment of adults had no effect on quantities of MAAs in the spawn. Adults exposed to UV had significantly higher O2s and spawned twice as often. The UV-treated adults produced spawn with significantly higher O2s and their embryos developed to hatching sooner. The only significant effect of UV exposure of the spawn was to reduce the percentage of veligers hatching from 71 to 50%. There was no significant effect on hatching time or size of the veligers at hatching, nor on number of eggs per capsule. Received: 13 May 1997 / Accepted: 27 June 1997  相似文献

To learn how organisms apportion space in the open ocean, biological oceanographers have sought to improve temporal and spatial resolution of ocean sampling systems. Their objectives are to simultaneously measure physical, chemical and biological structure in the water column in order to find significant correlations that may reveal underlying processes. Here we report one such correlation between intense peaks of bioluminescence and density discontinuities in the water column. Intensified video recordings made in these bioluminescent “hot spots” were analyzed with a computer image-recognition program that identifies organisms based on the temporal and spatial characteristics of their luminescent displays. Based on this analysis, the source of the “hot spots” was found to be very thin layers (0.5 m) of the bioluminescent copepod Metridia lucens present at from 5 to 100 times average background concentrations. Given the recent discovery that the vertical distribution of marine snow is also strongly correlated with density discontinuities in the water column, we suggest that this finding may provide a possible explanation for the disparity between estimated energy requirements of marine copepods and measurements of average in situ food concentrations. The energy costs associated with locating food-rich micro-patches is greatly reduced if those patches are spread out into very thin layers, because the search strategy can be reduced from three dimensions to one. Penicillium chrysogenum was immobilized on silica to develop a simple and cost effective method for solid phase extraction of Cd(II) and determination using flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). The sorbent was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and packed into a column. The conditions for quantitative sorption and desorption of Cd(II) were optimized. The preconcentration factor was 100 while detection limit was 0.61 µg L?1 with a relative standard deviation of 1.0%. The method was applied for determination of Cd in herbal medicine and tap water.  相似文献

During a 25 d Lagrangian study in May and June 1990 in the Northeast Atlantic Ocean, marine snow aggregates were collected using a novel water bottle, and the composition was determined microscopically. The aggregates contained a characteristic signature of a matrix of bacteria, cyanobacteria and autotrophic picoplankton with inter alia inclusions of the tintiniid Dictyocysta elegans and large pennate diatoms. The concentration of bacteria and cyanobacteria was much greater on the aggregates than when free-living by factors of 100 to 6000 and 3000 to 2 500 000, respectively, depending on depth. Various species of crustacean plankton and micronekton were collected, and the faecal pellets produced after capture were examined. These often contained the marine snow signature, indicating that these organisms had been consuming marine snow. In some cases, marine snow material appeared to dominate the diet. This implies a food-chain short cut wherby material, normally too small to be consumed by the mesozooplankton, and considered to constitute the diet of the microplankton can become part of the diet of organisms higher in the food-chain. The micronekton was dominated by the amphipod Themisto compressa, whose pellets also contained the marine snow signature. Shipboard incubation experiments with this species indicated that (1) it does consume marine snow, and (2) its gut-passage time is sufficiently long for material it has eaten in the upper water to be defecated at its day-time depth of several hundred meters. Plankton and micronekton were collected with nets to examine their vertical distribution and diel migration and to put into context the significance of the flux of material in the guts of migrants. Gut flux for the T. compressa population was calculated to be up to 2% of the flux measured simultaneously by drifting sediment traps and <5% when all migrants are considered. The in situ abundance and distribution of marine snow aggregates (>0.6 mm) was examined photographically. A sharp concentration peak was usually encountered in the depth range 40 to 80 m which was not associated with peaks of in situ fluorescence or attenuation but was just below or at the base of the upper mixed layer. The feeding behaviour of zooplankton and nekton may influence these concentration gradients to a considerable extent, and hence affect the flux due to passive settling of marine snow aggregates.  相似文献

Temperature, salinity, bottom-sediment type, and zinc concentration all influenced Cd uptake by 4 marine bivalves (Mya arenaria, Mytilus edulis, Mulinia lateralis and Nucula proxima) in short-term static assay systems using 109Cd as a tracer. The experimental system consisted of aquaria containing 20 l of seawater maintained under controlled light and temperature conditions. The water contained either 5 or 20 g/l Cd and tracer. Distribution and kinetics of the metal were monitored in the water column and organisms. The results demonstrate that Cd uptake rates differed widely among the organisms tested. An increase in temperature increased Cd uptake rate by all test organisms. A decrease in salinity increased Cd uptake by all organisms tested. The presence of bottom sediment depresses Cd accumulation in some benthic animals. Zinc in concentrations of 0.5 mg/l substantially decreased Cd uptake by Mytilus edulis and Mulinia lateralis. It is suggested that all important species and environmental variables be considered when studying heavy-metal uptake by marine organisms or when establishing water-quality criteria.  相似文献
