The functional response of the predatory isopod Saduria entomon to the prey amphipod Bathyporeia pilosa was measured in normoxia (95% O2 saturation), moderate hypoxia (45% O2 saturation) and hypoxia (35% O2 saturation) in aquarium experiments. The prey densities tested ranged from 400 to 8000 ind m−2. Prey density influenced consumption rates of S. entomon in normoxia and 45% O2 saturation, but there was no difference between consumption rates at these two oxygen levels. Nevertheless the form of functional response differed. In normoxia S. entomon showed a positively density-dependent functional response to B. pilosa, indicating a potentially stabilizing effect on the prey population. In moderate hypoxia the variance in consumption increased, decreasing the statistical power to distinguish between response models. The functional response of S. entomon in moderate hypoxia was best described with a density-independent response, characterized as destabilizing for the prey population. In hypoxia (35% O2) predation by S. entomon did not respond to increasing prey density, as almost no amphipods were eaten at this oxygen level. The results are discussed in terms of the usability of theoretical models to examine predator–prey relationships in stressful environments. Received: 26 April 1997 / Accepted: 20 May 1997  相似文献

We investigated the effect of different densities of the burrowing deposit-feeding amphipod Monoporeia affinis on the potential for recruitment of zooplankton from benthic resting eggs. Hatching of resting eggs was induced in the laboratory on sliced and resuspended 1-cm depth-sections of sediment cores, collected at six stations in an archipelago area of the Gulf of Bothnia, Baltic Sea. The uppermost 5 cm of the sediment was studied. The most common species that hatched was Eurytemora affinis (Copepoda). Individuals from another copepod genus, Acartia, hatched in significant numbers only in the cores from two stations with low amphipod abundance. Cores from stations with high amphipod densities showed a deeper distribution of emerging E. affinis nauplii compared with stations with few amphipods; the oxidised sediment layer was also deeper at high M. affinis densities than at low. Total (0 to 5 cm strata pooled) number of hatched E. affinis nauplii was independent of amphipod density. This indicates that the effect of M. affinis on E. affinis eggs involves deeper burial due to bioturbation, rather than predation. Decreased benthic recruitment of zooplankton at localities with high M. affinis density is suggested, since more deeply positioned eggs are less likely to hatch. When hatching was induced in intact, non-sliced cores from one station, the number of E. affinis nauplii that hatched was on average 43% of the number that hatched in the upper centimetre of the sliced cores from the same station. This fraction (43%), if applied to the other stations, implied a potential for benthic recruitment of up to 80 000 ind m−2 for E. affinis. Due to its high abundance, M. affinis is likely to greatly reduce benthic recruitment of zooplankton in this system. Received: 17 September 1999 / Accepted: 23 February 2000  相似文献

Laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the survival rate of Monoporeia affinis in sulphide-rich sediment with oxic overlying water, and the effect of amphipod bioturbation on sulphide and oxygen profiles. As long as the oxygen content in the water is high, the amphipods seem to avoid quite high concentrations (>200 μmol l−1) of sulphide in the sediment by creating microhabitats where sulphide is rapidly oxidised. In cores with amphipods, a decrease of sulphide concentration was found in upper layers, while an increase of sulphide was found in deeper layers. Aggregation of amphipods generated pockets of light-brown sediment, characterised by high oxygen concentrations and no sulphide, and their depth was clearly dependent on amphipod density. This indicates that M. affinis has a potential to recolonise sulphide-rich sediments, devoid of macroscopic life, after the overlying water column has become oxygenated. Laboratory soft bottom microcosms, containing sediment with natural populations of meio-and microfauna and the amphipod Pontoporeia affinis Lindström, were used to investigate chronic effects of cadmium on a typical Baltic Sea benthic community. Temperature, salinity, organic content of the sediment and the life cycles of the amphipods in laboratory control microcosms were in good agreement with conditions in the Baltic Sea. In Experiment 1, P. affinis was exposed to four assayed cadmium concentrations, 0 (control), 6.3, 41 and 127 g Cd·1-1, for 265 d. At the lowest cadmium concentration (6.3 g Cd·1-1), the sediment contained about 700 times, and P. affinis about 1 700 times, the water concentration at the end of the experiments. In microcosms without P. affinis, the sediments accumulated less cadmium. Effects on P. affinis embryogenesis were detected after 105 d of exposure in all tested cadmium concentrations. Mortality of juveniles was significantly increased after 265 d of exposure in mean assayed concentrations of 41 and 127 g Cd·1-1. In Experiment 2, P. affinis was exposed to cadmium in assayed concentrations, 0, 6.5 and 46 g Cd·1-1 for 460 d. At the lowest water concentration (6.5 g Cd·1-1), the prolonged exposure did not increase the sediment concentration, which indicates a steady state, while concentrations in P. affinis reached about 3 500 times the lowest water concentration after 460 d. Juvenile P. affinis matured sexually and reproduced normally in all microcosms, but their offspring died in all microcosms with added Cd. This occurred at water concentrations not uncommon in polluted marine areas. The effects are serious in comparison to those found in conventional short-term laboratory experiments with the same concentrations and demonstrate the importance of long-term experiments in ecotoxicology.  相似文献

Many small marine herbivores utilize specific algal hosts, but the ultimate factors that shape host selection are not well understood. For example, the use of particular microhabitats within algal hosts and the functional role of these microhabitats have received little attention, especially in large algae such as kelps. We studied microhabitat use of the herbivorous amphipod Peramphithoe femorata that inhabits nest-like domiciles on the blades of giant kelp Macrocystis pyrifera. The vertical position of nest-bearing blades along the stipe of the algal thallus and the position of the nests within the lateral blades of M. pyrifera were surveyed in two kelp forests in northern-central Chile. Additionally, we conducted laboratory and field experiments to unravel the mechanisms driving the observed distributions. Peramphithoe femorata nests were predominantly built on the distal blade tips in apical sections of the stipes. Within-blade and within-stipe feeding preferences of P. femorata did not explain the amphipod distribution. Amphipods did not consistently select distal over proximal blade sections in habitat choice experiments. Mortality of tethered amphipods without nests was higher at the seafloor than at the sea surface in the field. Nests mitigated mortality of tethered amphipods, especially at the seafloor. Thus, protective microhabitats within thalli of large kelp species can substantially enhance survival of small marine herbivores. Our results suggest that differential survival from predation might be more important than food preferences in determining the microhabitat distribution of these herbivores.  相似文献

An intensive field study of three depth zones in 1980 revealed different seasonal patterns of growth in the deposit-feedingPontoporeia affinis Lindström andP. femorata Kröyer (Crustacea, Amphipoda) in the northern Baltic Sea, SW coast of Finland. The study areas were situated in the outer archipelago at depths of 21 to 25 m and 26 to 30 m and in the sea zone at 46 m. InP. affinis growth rates decreased with increasing depth, but the same seasonal pattern was evident at all depths: growth began in spring, increased to a maximum in early or midsummer, and decreased again or ceased altogether by autumn. In the archipelago the 1 + age group attained its maximum growth rate in May–June and the 0 + age group clearly later, in June–July. InP. femorata the growth rates of all age groups were more even, having only slight peaks in summer and autumn. The seasonal variation in growth ofPontoporeia spp. was not directly dependent on sedimentation of the spring phytoplankton bloom, but was more closely connected with seasonality of temperature and total benthic metabolism. Because estimates of annual food consumption byPontoporeia spp. exceeded bacterial and meiofaunal production, these species must have derived the majority of their energy demands from dead organic detritus. BothPontoporeia species are probably strictly food-limited in the area. The cessation of growth seemed to coincide with the approach of a plateau of total biomass, suggesting food competition. Different timing of growth between the age groups ofP. affinis suggests differences in sources or utilization of food; differences betweenP. affinis adP. femorata may indicate interspecific competition or different food.  相似文献

The benthic crustacean Saduria entomon occurs frequently in deeper parts of the Gulf of Gdańsk. It is one of a few species able to survive oxygen deficiencies in its natural environment. The anaerobic heat production of S. entomon during 40 h of anoxia was determined. Additionally, the effects of size, sex and activity of the organism on its heat production were investigated. Average heat production of S. entomon was 0.25 ± 0.16 mJ g−1 wet wt s−1 (n=55, avg. length 39 ± 6 mm). The amount of heat produced decreased with increasing body size. The heat production of S. entomon males was greater than that of females ( p<0.05). Specimens kept in chambers with glass beads and water were less active and had lower metabolic rates than those placed in chambers containing water only (more active). During 40 h of anoxia S. entomon gradually decreased its heat production to 5–16% of aerobic level, demonstrating the high adaptation of this species to changeable oxygen conditions in the Baltic Sea. The Baltic benthic amphipod Monoporeia affinis (Lindström) has haemocyanin as a respiratory pigment. Haemocyanin constitutes ca. 90% of the total protein in the haemolymph. Oxygen affinity of the pigment is low, a P50 of 4 kPa at pH?7.5 (6?°C). The Bohr factor (Δlog P50/ΔpH) is also low, ?0.51, and the cooperativity coefficient, n50, at P50 is 1.5 to 2.5. The pigment characteristics point to a modest role of the haemocyanin, contrary to what could be expected for this sediment-living amphipod. It is suggested that physically dissolved oxygen is most important as oxygen supplier to the tissues.  相似文献

The annual occurrence of hypoxia (<25% oxygen saturation) in the bottom waters along the Swedish west coast coincides with the postlarval settlement of Norway lobster, Nephrops norvegicus (L.). This study investigates behaviour and the experimental effects of low oxygen concentrations in juvenile N. norvegicus of different ages. All experimental individuals were reared to the juvenile (postlarval) stage in the laboratory and then given sediment as a substratum. Behavioural responses to low oxygen concentrations were tested in early and late Postlarvae 1 exposed to normoxia (>80% oxygen saturation, pO2 > 16.7 kPa), moderate hypoxia (30% oxygen saturation, pO2 = 6.3 kPa) and hypoxia (25% oxygen saturation, pO2 = 5.2 kPa). The experiments were run for a maximum period of 24 h or until individuals died. Behaviour was studied using sequential video recordings of four behavioural activities: digging, walking, inactivity or flight (escape swimming up into the water column). Behaviour and mortality changed with lowered oxygen concentrations; energetically costly activities (such as walking) were reduced, and activity in general declined. In normoxia, juveniles initially walked and then burrowed, but when exposed to hypoxia they were mainly inactive with occasional outbursts of escape swimming. To increase oxygen availability the juveniles were observed to raise their bodies on stilted legs (similar to adults in hypoxic conditions), but oxygen saturations of 25% were lethal within 24 h. The results suggest that the main gas exchanges of early postlarval stages occur over the general body surface. Burrowing behaviour was tested in Postlarvae 1 and 2 of different ages held in >80% oxygen saturation for 1 wk. The difference in time taken to complete a V-shaped depression or a U-shaped burrow was measured. The results showed a strong negative relationship between postlarval age and burrowing time, but all individuals made a burrow. Juveniles were more sensitive to hypoxia than adults. Thus, the possible consequences of episodic hypoxia for the recruitment of Nephrops norvegicus and for the recolonization of severely affected areas are discussed. The “Tsesis” oil spill in October 1977 resulted in the release of over 1 000 tons of medium grade fuel oil in an archipelago in the brackish Baltic Sea. Considerable oil quantities reached the benthos by sedimentation. Within 16 d benthic amphipods of the genus Pontoporeia, as well as the polychaete Harmothoe sarsi Kinberg, showed reduction to less than 5% of pre-spill biomasses at the most impacted station. The clam Macoma balthica (L.) was more resistant, and showed little or no mortality, but was heavily contaminated by oil (about 2 000 μg g-1 dry wt total hydrocarbons). The meiofauna was strongly affected, with ostracods, harpacticoids, Turbellaria and kinorhynchs showing clear reductions in abundance, while nematodes, as a group, were more resistant. In the winter following the spill gravid Pontoporeia affinis Lindström females showed a statistically significant increase in the frequency of abnormal or undifferentiated eggs. Food-chain transfer of oil to flounder [Platichthys flesus (L.)] was indicated. Not until the second summer after the spill were the first signs of recovery noted at the most heavily impacted station: Amphipods, H. sarsi and harpacticoids increased and the oil concentrations in M. balthica decreased (to about 1 000 μg g-1). In the area where amphipods had been virtually eliminated, there was an unusually heavy recruitment of M. balthica, reaching 4 000 juveniles, of 1.5–2 mm length, per square metre, probably from settling in summer 1978. Three years after the spill Pontoporeia spp. biomass was still depressed in the most affected area, while H. sarsi showed normal biomass, and M. balthica abundance was inflated. Oil concentrations in M. balthica (about 250 μg g-1) and flounder were only slightly elevated and the oil could no longer be confidently ascribed to “Tsesis” origin, even using GC/MS-analysis. Recovery was thus underway, but the long lifespan of M. balthica implies that the disturbed community composition may persist for many years at this station. Full recovery is likely to require more than 5 yr and may take a decade or more. An effort to evaluate the accumulated monetary loss to fishery from the accident indicates that direct costs of shoreline cleanup and vessel damage were considerably greater.  相似文献

We experimentally investigated the effect of different densities of the burrowing, deposit-feeding amphipod Monoporeia affinis on the recruitment of zooplankton from benthic resting eggs. Intact sediment cores with in situ density and species composition of zooplankton resting eggs and benthic fauna were collected in the northern Bothnian Sea, part of the Baltic Sea. We removed as many M. affinis as possible from the cores and then added different numbers of M. affinis to the cores to generate a range of densities. The cores were exposed to different densities of M. affinis for either 3 or 40 days, after which the hatched zooplankton was registered. One subset of the cores were initially incubated under low temperature (2–3 °C, to prevent hatching) for 37 days (the resting phase), to allow for effects of M. affinis on unhatched resting eggs. These cores were then incubated under higher temperature (13 °C) for 3 days (the hatching phase), to induce hatching and allow for effects on hatching or hatched specimens. In a second subset of cores with the same time and temperature schedule, the M. affinis density was experimentally reduced at the start of the hatching phase, to evaluate the effect of M. affinis during the hatching phase. To a third subset of cores, we immediately initiated the hatching phase, without an experimental resting phase, to evaluate the effects induced during the resting phase. The most common zooplankton species that hatched was Eurytemora affinis (Copepoda), followed by Bosmina longispina maritima (Cladocera). In all cores that were subjected to a resting phase, the numbers of hatched E. affinis were log-linearly negatively related to density of M. affinis. An increase of M. affinis density from 1,000 to 5,000 individuals m−2, normal field densities, reduced the hatching by 60–70%. The negative impact was mainly exerted during the hatching phase, suggesting predation on, burial of or physical injury of hatching nauplii or eggs in a late development stage as likely mechanisms. Also, the number of B. longispina maritima that hatched was reduced by M. affinis during the hatching phase, but no clear relation to density of M. affinis could be identified. The results show that M. affinis can reduce recruitment to zooplankton from benthic resting eggs. Such impact by the benthos on resting stages of zooplankton is therefore a potentially significant link between the benthic and pelagic systems. Variations in postbranchial oxygen tensions were studied in vivo in the brackish water isopod Saduria entomon collected from the Baltic Sea in 1992. Haemolymph oxygen tensions were highly influenced by activity. Resting isopods showed small and regular variations in haemolymph oxygen tensions, while a sudden burst of activity caused an immediate reduction in oxygen tension. Periods of no ventilation caused anoxic haemolymph in less than 3 to 4 min. Haemolymph oxygen tension responds rapidly, within seconds to minutes, to changes in isopod activity. Oxygen uptake rates calculated from oxygen tension difference, gill area and membrane thickness were compared with measured values. Permeability studies showed that only 30% of the gill area was effective in oxygen transfer. The present study has confirmed earlier measured oxygen uptake rates and reevaluated the role of the gills as respiratory organs. Postbranchial oxygen tension was established as a function of external steady state oxygen tensions and the intrinsic diffusive conductance was estimated.  相似文献

Microphallus papillorobustus is a manipulative trematode that induces strong behavioural alterations in the gamaridean amphipod Gammarus insensibilis, making the amphipod more vulnerable to predation by aquatic birds (definitive hosts). Conversely, the sympatric nematode Gammarinema gammari uses Gammarus insensibilis as a habitat and a source of nutrition. We investigated the conflict of interest between these two parasite species by studying the consequences of mixed infection on amphipod behaviour associated with the trematode. In the field, some amphipods infected by the trematode did not display the altered behaviour. These normal amphipods also had more nematodes, suggesting that the nematode overpowered the manipulation of the trematode, a strategy that would prolong the nematode's life. We hypothesize that sabotage of the trematode by the nematode would be an adaptive strategy for the nematode consistent with recent speculation about co-operation and conflict in manipulative parasites. A behavioural test conducted in the laboratory from naturally infected amphipods yielded the same result. However, exposing amphipods to nematodes did not negate or decrease the manipulation exerted by the trematode. Similarly, experimental elimination of nematodes from amphipods did not permit trematodes to manipulate behaviour. These experimental data do not support the hypothesis that the negative association between nematodes and manipulation by the trematode is a result of the "sabotage" hypothesis.  相似文献

Reproduction in planktonic animals depends on numerous biotic and abiotic factors. One of them is predation pressure, which can have both direct consumptive effects on population density and sex ratio, and non-consumptive effects, for example on mating and migration behaviour. In copepods, predator vulnerability depends on their sex, motility pattern and mating behaviour. Therefore, copepods can be affected at multiple stages during the mating process. We investigated the reproductive dynamics of the estuarine copepod Eurytemora affinis in the presence and absence of its predator the mysid Neomysis integer in a mesocosm experiment. We found that the proportion of ovigerous females decreased in the presence of predators. This shift was not caused by differential predation as the absolute number of females was unaffected by mysid presence. Presence of predators reduced the ratio of males to non-ovigerous females, but not by predation of males. Our combined results suggest that the shift from ovigerous to non-ovigerous females under the presence of predators was caused by either actively delayed egg production or by shedding of egg sacs. Nauplii production was initially suppressed in the predation treatment, but increased towards the end of the experiment. The proportion of fertilized females was similar in both treatments, but constantly fell behind model predictions using a random mating model. Our results highlight the importance of non-consumptive effects of predators on copepod reproduction and hence on population dynamics.  相似文献

Photographic and trap data obtained from the eastern North Atlantic Ocean in 1981 and 1978, respectively, have been combined to document the response of abyssal lysianassid amphipods to large food falls, and the predation on these amphipods by the fish Paraliparis bathybius. The use of a new camera/current meter system has demonstrated that overall numbers of amphipods and presence of fish were related to tidal currents. Species of Paralicella and Orchomene were the most abundant amphipods, and occurred in peak numbers during periods of low current velocity. Variation in abundance of Eurythenes gryllus, a larger species, which occurred in smaller numbers, was apparently not related to tidal currents. Paraliparis bathybius were present only during flood tides.  相似文献

Predation by the medusa Aurelia aurita L. on early first-feeding stage larvae of the herring clupea harengus L. was studied in the laboratory. The medusae were captured in Loch Etive, Scotland. Herring larvae were reared from the extificially fertilized eggs of spawning Clyde herring caught in March, 1982. Swimming speeds, volume searched”, capture efficiency and predation rates increased as medusa size increased. Predation rates on fish larvae increased with prey density, but appeared to approach a maximum at high prey densities; in 1 h experiments, a maximum rate of predation of 6.64 larvae h-1 was estimated by fitting an Ivlev function. A model to predict predation rates was constructed from swimming speeds, sizes and densities of medusae and larvae, and capture efficiency. The rates of predation predicted from the model fell within the range of experimental data, but tended to underestimate rates and did not account for saturation of medusae. Swimming patterns of medusae changed after prey capture: (a) before capture, encounter rates were low and medusae were relatively less active; (b) after capture of 1 larva, encounter rates doubled, with the stimulated medusae exhibiting increased activity and an aftered “searching” path; and (c) after capture of many larvae, swimming speeds and encounter rates of medusae decreased.  相似文献

Benthic feeding on macrofauna was studied in juveniles of the sparids Lithognathus lithognathus and Rhabdosargus holubi in the upper reaches of the Gamtoos Estuary, South Africa. Fish and benthic macrofauna were sampled simultaneously, and the selection of invertebrate prey assessed. Both fish species strongly selected for corophioid amphipods and consumed other benthic taxa in low numbers. R. holubi also exploited aquatic autotrophs, while L. lithognathus had a narrow prey-spectrum, feeding almost exclusively on the tube-dwelling amphipod Grandidierella lignorum. G. lignorum was the most abundant prey species, both in the benthos and the fish's diet. This species also showed prominent behavioural differences between the sexes; males were markedly more active on the sediment surface than females, who rarely left their tubes during the day. Males switched from an infaunal to epifaunal microhabitat in search of receptive females, concurrently increasing their exposure to fish predators. Consequently, L. lithognathus selected significantly more males than female amphipods, causing a marked bias towards females in the sex ratio and age-structure of the amphipod population. Juvenile amphipods were less preyed upon, presumably as a result of lower prey-detection or capture efficiency by the predators. Accepting current notions about predation as an important structuring element for benthic communities, our data also stress the prominence of size-and sex-selective predation in structuring individual prey populations.  相似文献

The Norway lobster Nephrops norvegicus (L.) inhabits burrows in muddy clay sediments (e.g. on the Swedish west coast), where an autumnal oxygen deficiency in the bottom water can occur. Our experiments investigated whether the irrigation of the burrows would reflect a behavioural adaptation to hypoxia, and whether any gender differences of such behaviour exist. Irrigation is performed by the pleopods which may compensate for a decreasing oxygen tension. Pleopod activity (total number of strokes per sampling time), associated with oxygen concentration and gender, was studied in N. norvegicus kept in artificial burrows resembling their natural habitat. Male and female lobsters were separately exposed to either normoxia (70% oxygen saturation) or hypoxia (30% oxygen saturation). A sexual difference in behaviour was found, where females irrigated the burrow less than males during normoxia. Females showed a significant increase of pleopod activity in hypoxia compared with normoxic conditions, which was not displayed by the males probably due to the degree of individual variation found. However, when only males were studied during progressive hypoxia (from 60 to 5% oxygen saturation), following any changes of irrigational behaviour, a significant increase of accumulated pleopod activity occurred. A major increase of pleopod activity appeared between 60 and 50% oxygen saturation, below which the activity remained high until a critical point (<10% saturation, 11 °C, 33 psu) where irrigation dropped to a level close to that of normoxic values. Activity sessions during hypoxia were longer and had a higher stroke rate than during normoxia. Received: 22 October 1997 / Accepted: 26 February 1998  相似文献

The physiological condition, determined as the ammonia excretion rate (V NH 4 + ), total lipid level and lipid class composition, of two deposit-feeding benthic amphipods, Monoporeia (=Pontoporeia) affinis and Pontoporeia femorata, was studied from 12 opensea stations in the northern Baltic Sea between 24 May and 11 June 1993. The M. affinis populations can be geographically grouped according to their physiological condition: (1) eastern Gulf of Finland, with moderate lipid level (mean 24.4% of dry wt) and high V NH 4 + (45.2 mol NH 4 + g-1 dry wt d-1); (2) Bothnian Sea, wigh high lipid level (34.5%) and low V NH 4 + (24.6 mol NH 4 + g-1 dry wt d-1); and (3) Bothnian Bay, with low lipid level (15.2%) and high V NH 4 + (44.3 mol NH 4 + dry wt d-1). A similar pattern could be observed also in the level of triacylglycerols and the neutral-to-polar lipid ratio. P. femorata, the dominating species in the western Gulf of Finland, showed variable station-specific excretion rates (22.3 to 43.0 mol NH 4 + g-1 dry wt d-1) and lipid levels (23.4 to 30.4%). The spatial variability in the weight-specific V NH 4 + of M. affinis could not be explained by the differences in the size of individuals, lipid level or lipid class composition; this emphasizes the significance of the effects of spatially differing nutritional conditions, which manifest themselves as different modes of metabolic energy production and different intensities of energy storage. In addition, the potential contribution of the amphipod populations to benthic nitrogen mineralization was estimated; in May to June, the NH 4 + release of different populations ranged from 12 to 237 mol NH 4 + m-2d-1. In general, populations with high abundance and/or biomass release the greatest amounts of NH 4 + , but the values are modified by the physiological condition of the individuals.  相似文献

Cyanobacterial blooms are a common phenomenon in the Baltic Sea, and the hepatotoxin nodularin has been frequently detected in certain Baltic Sea fishes and mussels. However, there is no knowledge about the naturally occurring concentrations of nodularin in Baltic Sea zooplankton. The aim of this study was to survey the concentrations of nodularin in natural zooplankton assemblages, and to study the depuration of nodularin in one common copepod species, Eurytemora affinis, experimentally. The nodularin concentrations in common zooplankton species were determined from field-collected samples from the northern Baltic Proper in 2001 and 2002, during cyanobacterial blooms, and the samples were analysed by ELISA immunoassay. Nodularin could be detected from the field-collected zooplankton, suggesting that during a natural bloom event toxins accumulate in their tissues. The concentrations were relatively low (0.07±0.01 μg g−1 ww), ranging from below detection limit to 0.62 μg g−1 ww. Some variation occurred in the concentrations between species and years; generally concentrations were higher in 2001 than in 2002. In the depuration experiment E. affinis copepods were fed with toxic Nodularia spumigena for 24 h, and their toxin contents were monitored for 24 h after transferring them to filtered seawater. A rapid decrease in nodularin concentrations occurred during the first 0.5–3 h after the exposure. However, after a 24-h depuration period in filtered seawater, nodularin could be still detected in E. affinis tissues, indicating that part of the accumulated nodularin, or its derivatives, could be transferred to planktivores.  相似文献
