Polychlorinated bornanes, the main components of Toxaphene, are bioconcentrated in aquatic organisms to a high extent. However, up to this time no bioconcentration tests with individual chlorinated bornanes in aquatic organisms have been performed. Therefore, the bioconcentration factors (BCFs) of seven selected persistent chlorinated bornane congeners which are regularly found in aquatic organisms, were predicted from their n-octanol/water partition coefficients (log Kow). Furthermore, these BCF values were compared with the measured bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) in zooplankton and different fish species from the aquatic environment.  相似文献

The potential of TNT to accumulate in aquatic organisms was assessed by determining bioconcentration factors for TNT and TNT biotransformation products using two benthic invertebrates (Chironomus tentans and Lumbriculus variegatus), and by determining the bioaccumulation factor of TNT and TNT biotransformation products due to TNT exposure via feeding for channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus). In all three species, TNT was rapidly biotransformed resulting in minimal accumulation. The bioconcentration factors for parent TNT ranged from 3 to 4 ml g(-1) for the invertebrates studied, while the TNT bioaccumulation factor for catfish via oral exposure of food pellets was 2.4x10(-5) g g(-1) based on the concentration of TNT in the food pellet. As indicated by this small bioaccumulation factor, TNT accumulation in channel catfish through trophic transfer would be negligible compared to aqueous exposure (previously reported BCF of 0.79 ml g(-1)). TNT extractable biotransformation products accumulated to a greater degree than parent TNT for all three species. In addition, a large fraction of the radioactivity within all three species resisted solvent extraction. The highest bioconcentration factors occurred in L. variegatus with extractable radioactivity measuring 76 ml g(-1) and total radioactivity measuring 216 ml g(-1). Because the bioaccumulation of TNT is very low compared to the bioaccumulation of its biotransformation products, further research including identifying and determining the relative toxicities of these biotransformation products is necessary to fully evaluate the environmental risk posed by exposure to TNT.  相似文献

Chlorobenzene bioconcentration factors for Scenedesmus spp measured by batch equilibration, increased with temperature between 4.5 and 27.6 °C. A thermodynamic analysis suggests that the bioconcentration is driven by an entropy gain. Slopes of LogBCF-logKow relationships increased with temperature. These results agree with earlier reports for the analogous bioconcentration to fish.  相似文献

Steady state kinetic models, which may be useful for the prediction from simple data, of the bioaccumulation of liophilic pollutants in ecosystems are discussed. For some aquatic species, such as Mytilus edulis, bioconcentration factors (BCFs) are closely related to water solubilities, and octanol: water partition coefficients (Kows). In other cases, more complex models are necessary to take account of metabolism and/or uptake from food. Somewhat different considerations apply in the estimation of bioaccumulation factors (BFs) for terrestrial organisms that cannot excrete lipophilic compounds by diffusion into ambient water. The relationship between half-lives and BFs is discussed. Metabolism is necessary for the effective elimination of lipophilic pollutants by terrestrial animals, and a model is proposed for the prediction of BFs from kinetic data obtained from in vitro metabolism studies. If such a model can be successfully developed it will make possible the prediction of bioaccumulation of pollutants by a wide range of species which cannot be studied by present methods.  相似文献

Yearling carp (Cyprinus carpio) were exposed to d-phenothrin (a 1:4 mixture of d-cis and d-trans isomers) in the absence and the presence of piperonyl butoxide under the flow-through test condition and the bioconcentration factors (BCF's) of the geometric isomers were separately evaluated. It was demonstrated that BCF values for the d-cis isomer were significantly higher by 1.1 to 2.2-fold than those for the d-trans isomer and the subsequent exposure in the presence of piperonyl butoxide resulted in elevated BCF values for the d-cis isomer, but no remarkable change in BCF's was observed for the d-trans isomer. The elevation observed here was presumably attributable to a reduced elimination caused by inhibited oxidative reactions characteristic to the d-cis isomer. The contribution of biotransformation to the elimination rate constant (K3/K2 was estimated to be 2.3–11. Thus, the result was well explained by a distinct oxidative metabolism of the d-cis isomer and a significance of metabolism in bioconcentration phenomenon was exemplified.  相似文献

In this work, mercury (Hg), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) concentrations and tissue distribution are determined in seven benthic invertebrates species (the key species) from the Mid Atlantic Ridge (MAR) hydrothermal vent fields. The samples were collected from three hydrothermal vent fields – Menez Gwen, 840 m; Lucky Strike, 1700 m and Rainbow, 2300 m – near the Azores Triple Junction. These fields are characterized by different depths, geological context and chemical composition of the hydrothermal fluid, particularly the metal content, which is reflected by the metal concentrations in the organisms. Indeed, our results show that organisms from Menez Gwen presented the highest Hg concentrations, while those from Lucky Strike and Rainbow were richer in Cu and Zn. The potential transfer of these metals through two trophic links are also evaluated and include (1) the mussel Bathymodiolus azoricus and the commensal worm Branchipolynoe seepensis, and (2) three different species of shrimps and the crab Segonzacia mesatlantica. No evidence of Hg biomagnification in either of the vent food chains is clearly observed but an increase in Hg accumulation from prey to predator in the crustacean food chain. The same pattern was observed for Cu and Zn, even though these metals are not known to be generally biomagnified in food chains.  相似文献

Petroleum products are complex mixtures of hydrocarbons. They are important as constituents of fuels and lubricants, and as key raw materials for the chemicals industry. Since there is a potential for accidental releases to the aquatic environment, bioaccumulation of higher hydrocarbons is of concern. Here, the bioconcentration behaviour of two representative hydrocarbons, the dodecane isomers n-dodecane and 2,2,4,6,6-pentamethylheptane (PMH), was investigated in fathead minnows at concentrations in water below their maximum aqueous solubility. The concentration of n-dodecane in fish did not exceed our method limit of detection of 60 μg/kg. In contrast, PMH could be quantified in fish. No significant increase in the ratio of PMH concentrations in fish to water could be detected indicating that an exposure time of 4–10 days is sufficient to approach steady-state. For n-dodecane the upper limit of the bioconcentration factor (BCF) is estimated by dividing the method limit of detection by the exposure concentration and a value of 240 l/kg is derived. For PMH the bioconcentration factor, estimated as the average fish/water concentration ratio during the steady-state part of the experiment, ranges between 880 and 3500 l/kg. The BCFs of both compounds are small compared to their hydrophobicity. Given that both linear and branched hydrocarbons are known to be biotransformed by fish, it appears that efficient metabolism of the test compounds in fathead minnows prevents bioaccumulation.  相似文献

Bioaccumulation kinetics and bioconcentration factor (BCF) of chlorinated pesticides like Aldrin, Dieldrin, Benzene hexachloride (BHC), and Dichlorodiphenyl-dichloro-ethane (DDT) in fish tissues of Puntius ticto was studied in detail in a continuous fed system. The bioconcentration process is summarized by using a first order uptake model and the steady-state BCF is calculated based on the 30 days exposure. Rate of bioaccumulation of DDT was maximum of 4.6432 microg g(-1) wet weight per day in liver tissue whereas it was minimum of 0.0002 microg g(-1) wet weight per day in case of Dieldrin in the muscle tissue among the pesticides. It was observed that DDT showed maximum BCF of 89.010 in case of liver tissue of the fish exposed to 30 days. The regression coefficient (r2) between pesticide concentration and exposure time varied between 0.6212 and 0.9817 indicating high correlation. Based on actual calculated BCF values, the octanol water partition coefficient (Kow) values were predicted. In order to prove the hydrophobic property of chlorinated compounds and its affinity towards lipid, the Kow is predicted. Results showed that pesticide burden differ from tissue to tissue and can be correlated to the lipid content, size, exposure time, and species.  相似文献

The Ah or 2,3,7,8-TCDD receptor protein plays an important role in mediating the biologic, toxic and genotoxic effects of aryl and halogenated aryl hydrocarbons. An assessment of the physicochemical parameters which facilitate ligand: receptor interactions was determined by multiple parameter linear regression analysis of the relative receptor binding affinities of a series of 7-substituted-2,3-dichlorodibenzo-p-dixoins (Eq 1), 8-substituted-2,3-di (Eq. 2) and 2,3,4-trichlorodibenzofurans (Eq 3). It has been shown that there are marked differences in species sensitivity to 2,3,7,8-TCDD (i.e. guinea pig > rat maice > hamster) although hepatic receptor levels in these species are comparable. QSAR analysis of the receptor binding EC50 data for the 7-substituted-2,3-dichlorodibenzo-p-dioxins using rat (Eq. 1), mouse (Eq. 4), guinea pig (Eq. 5) and hamster (Eq. 6) hepatic cytosol demonstrated that there were significant differences in these equations. However it was also noted that

The usefulness of two surrogate methods for rapidly determining the bioavailability of PAHs in hydrocarbon-contaminated marine sediments was assessed. Comparisons are made between the PAHs accumulated by the benthic bivalve, Tellina deltoidalis, and the extractable-PAHs determined using a 6-h XAD-2 resin desorption method and a 4-h gut fluid mimic (GFM) extraction method. There were significant positive relationships between PAH bioaccumulation by the bivalves and sediment PAH concentrations. These relationships were not improved by normalising the sediment PAH concentrations to the organic carbon concentration. The average percentage lipid content of the bivalves was 1.47 ± 0.22% and BSAFs for total-PAHs ranged from 0.06 to 0.80 (kg OC/kg lipid). The XAD-2 and GFM methods both extracted varying amounts of PAHs from the sediments. Low concentrations of PAHs were extracted by the GFM method (0.2–3.6% of total-PAHs in sediments) and the GFM results were inadequate for generalising about the bioavailability of the PAHs in the sediments. The XAD-2 method extracted greater amounts of PAHs (3–34% of total-PAHs in sediments), however, the total-PAH concentrations in the sediments provided a better, or equally good, prediction of PAH bioaccumulation by T. deltoidalis. The results indicated that these methods required further development before they can be applied routinely as surrogate methods for assessing the bioavailability of PAHs in sediments. Future research should be directed towards lowering detection limits and obtaining comparative data for a greater range of sediment types, contaminant classes and concentrations, and organisms of different feeding guilds and with different gut chemistry.  相似文献
