Summary We tested the hypothesis that the basis of the variation in reproductive strategy among male yellow warblers (Dendroica petechia) is a tradeoff in the allocation of reproductive effort to intrasexual competition (territorial effort) and to parental care (parental effort). Since a negative correlation between level of parental effort and amount of brown streaking on the breast (plumage score) has already been demonstrated in this species, this study looked for evidence of a positive correlation of territorial effort with plumage score and a negative correlation with parental effort. Analysis of the spatial and temporal use of territories, prior to egg-laying, by males with different plumage scores supported the prediction that brighter (higher plumage score) males allocate more effort to territorial establishment and maintenance (Fig. 1). Male plumage score was positively and highly significantly correlated with six different measures of the relative amount of time spent, rate of energy expended, and risk of injury assumed by each male during territorial activities. The level of territorial effort was also found to be negatively correlated with the level of parental effort expended by the same males later in the season, confirming that there is a tradeoff in allocation of reproductive effort to these two major components. Further analysis revealed that territory quality was positively correlated with male plumage score (Figs. 3 and 4), while average nestling growth rate and other indices of reproductive success were not (Fig. 6). These results suggest that increased territorial effort by brighter males enables them to occupy higher quality territories where high levels of parental effort are not necessary to maintain high levels of reproductive success. Since reproductive success was not correlated with plumage score, this study further supports the differential allocation hypothesis that different males are using alternative strategies for the allocation of reproductive effort. 相似文献

Emlen and Oring (1977) suggested that monogamy in birds is maintained because of the need for strict biparental care. A corollary of their suggestion is that paternal care should decrease under conditions of high food abundance. An alternative is that paternal care would increase if males take advantage of the higher food abundance by trying to reduce the length of the nestling feeding period. We tested these two ideas using yellow warblers (Dendroica petechia) by providing some pairs with supplemental food, thereby reducing the importance of biparental care. However, the extra food did not decrease paternal effort, nor did it increase it (Fig. 2). Early in the nestling period experimental females brooded more but visited their nestlings less than did control females, but later, when brooding times decreased, experimental females fed their nestlings more than did control females (Fig. 3). There were no significant differences in nestling survival (Fig. 5), but nestlings in the control treatment were larger and heavier up to 6 days old (Fig. 6). The main effect of supplemental food was on maternal, not paternal behaviour. Models of biparental care assume interdependence between the parental effort of both parents. We used multi-locus DNA fingerprinting to characterise the genetic mating system of the socially monogamous yellow warbler (Dendroica petechia). Over 2 years there were no instances of brood parasitism, but 59% of families (n = 90) contained extrapair sired young and 37% of offspring (n = 355) were of extra-pair paternity. Most hypotheses for extra-pair mating in monogamous species assume a paternity benefit to extra-pair sires, and focus on the benefit(s) to females. However, the assumption of male benefit has been little tested. Among yellow warblers, known extra-pair sires were just as likely to be cuckolded as any male in the population, and there was at least one reciprocal exchange of extra-pair paternity. Nevertheless, among known extra-pair sires, the paternity gains from extra-pair paternity were, on average, greater than the losses in their own families. These results show there is a paternity benefit to certain males. However, the benefit is not absolute but relative and therefore more difficult to measure. The results also suggest that patterns of extra-pair fertilisation are not determined by female choice alone. Most confirmed extra-pair mates were territorial neighbours, but some resided as far as three territories apart, and greater spatial separation was implied in other cases. Thus, the opportunity for extra-pair mating is great. We estimate that as a result of extra-pair fertilisations, variance in male mating success is increased somewhere between 3-fold and 15-fold over that which would result from within-pair reproduction alone. These findings affirm the potential importance of extra-pair reproduction for sexual selection in monogamous species and they support earlier suggestions that extra-territorial forays by male yellow warblers are for the purpose of extra-pair mating. 相似文献

In sexually dimorphic, polygynous species, where males provide little parental care and competition between males for access to fertile females is high, sexual selection theory predicts sex differences in age-specific reproductive output and mortality profiles, and greater variance in lifetime reproductive success in males than in females. We examined age-specific reproductive output, mortality patterns and the extent and causes of variation in reproductive success for a semi-free-ranging colony of mandrills (Mandrillus sphinx, Cercopithecidae) in Franceville, Gabon, using long-term (20 year) demographic records and microsatellite parentage analysis. Although differences in the demography and feeding ecology of this closed, provisioned colony, in comparison with wild mandrills, limit interpretation of our results, sex differences in reproductive output and mortality showed the patterns predicted by sexual selection theory. Mortality was higher in males than in females after sexual maturity, and lifespan was significantly shorter in males (mean 14 year) than in females (>22 year). Age at first reproduction was significantly earlier in females (mean 4.2 year) than in males (11.6 year), and male reproductive output declined earlier. All females of breeding age produced offspring; while only 17 of 53 sexually mature males (32%) sired. Males sired a maximum of 41 offspring, versus 17 in females, and variance in male reproductive output was significantly greater than in females at all ages. The most important influence on variation in lifetime reproductive output in both sexes was joint variation between length of the breeding period and reproductive rate, due to lower reproductive rates in younger animals. Finally, social rank significantly influenced reproductive output in both sexes: high-ranking females began their reproductive careers earlier and had a higher subsequent reproductive rate than low-ranking females, while males that achieved top rank during their career sired far more offspring than males that did not.Electronic Supplementary Material Supplementary material is available for this article at 相似文献

Birds migrating along coastlines may be at increased risk if displacement occurs toward open-ocean. Eastern North America
experiences prevailing northwesterly winds during autumn, which could compel some migrants to drift eastward. Therefore, migrants
at stop-over sites along this route may be a mixture of on- and off-course individuals. We assessed whether orientation behavior
of juvenile yellow-rumped warblers (Dendroica coronata) captured at a stop-over site in southern Nova Scotia was related to where they originated from (i.e., likely on/off-course).
We hypothesized three scenarios after displacement: 1) continued orientation in the migratory direction selected before displacement,
2) orientation from the new location toward the previous destination, or 3) correction to regain the original pathway. Using
stable isotopes, we determined that stop-over migrants originated from nearby areas (and assumed on-course) and as far away
as western Hudson Bay, over 1,600 km northwest (and assumed off-course) of the site. We used video-based orientation registration
cages to determine an individuals’ migratory orientation. Because numerous factors influence migratory orientation (e.g.,
fuel reserves, celestial cues), we simultaneously assessed the influence of body condition and cloud cover, in addition to
geographic origin, on orientation behavior. Individuals that originated closer to the site tended to orient more southwesterly.
Orientation directions became increasingly more west-northwesterly the further away an individual originated from the site
(i.e., the more likely it was to have been displaced). The result is most consistent with scenario three: individuals from
northwest origins likely respond to easterly displacement by orienting westerly to reestablish their previous migratory route. 相似文献

Carotenoid- and phaeomelanin-based sexual pigmentation may signal a capacity to maintain oxidative balance and viability. However, diverse empirical results leave the association between pigmentation and oxidative stress (OS) unclear. We assessed the hypothesis that population-specific levels of oxidative challenge, or strategies for managing OS, affect relationships between sexual pigmentation and OS. Specifically, intense oxidative challenge in migratory, temperate breeding birds might enhance correlations between pigmentation and OS relative to allied tropical breeders, since quality-based differences in OS may arise only under intense oxidative challenge. Alternatively, in temperate breeders with intense within-season reproductive effort, high-quality birds may invest in reproduction over oxidative balance, dampening negative correlations between pigmentation and OS. To assess these alternatives, we compared prenesting relationships between pigmentation and OS in a migratory, Californian population of yellow warblers (Setophaga petechia brewsteri) and in a resident, Mexican population (Setophaga petechia bryanti, “mangrove warblers”). Yellow warblers displayed higher OS than mangrove warblers. However, year of capture and sex had bigger influences on correlations between pigmentation and OS than population. Males with more intense melanin pigmentation had lower OS among mangrove warblers and yellow warblers captured in 2011, but not among yellow warblers captured in 2012. In females only, lower OS levels were associated with more colorful carotenoid pigmentation. Results suggest that both phaeomelanin- and carotenoid-based pigmentation have the potential to correlate with OS levels, but that the signaling potential of pigmentation may shift with inter-annual variation in environmental conditions and display sex-specific dynamics. 相似文献

Summary Polyterritorial polygyny in passerine birds, i.e., when already-paired males attract females in secondary territories, has been explained by male deception. Secondary females are assumed to make a poor choice, because they lack information about males' pairing status. To date, the deception hypothesis has focused mainly on the hole-nesting pied flycatcher. In this study of polyterritorial wood warblers, an open-nesting species, secondary females did not differ in number of fledged young compared with females of monogamous males, and they fledged even more young than primary females. In socially monogamous species, extra-pair paternity may increase the reproductive success of highly ornamented males, mediating the evolution of sexual ornaments. However, ornaments may also attract social mates, and a tradeoff between extra-pair paternity (EPP) and within-pair paternity (WPP) may complicate mating strategies. Further, in many socially monogamous species, females are also ornamented, and the relationship between female ornamentation and patterns of EPP has been neglected. We investigated the patterns of genetic paternity with respect to carotenoid- and melanin-based pigmentation in yellow warblers (Setophaga petechia) of both sexes. We asked whether males face tradeoffs between EPP and WPP, how paternity patterns relate to carotenoid- versus melanin-based pigmentation, and whether less EPP occurs in broods when males and females are assortatively paired. Males faced a tradeoff between EPP and WPP. Moreover, non-additive relationships existed between paternity patterns and the two pigment types in both sexes. Males with high melanin coverage but dull carotenoid pigmentation achieved EPP but lost WPP, whereas males with high levels of both pigment types had high WPP but gained little EPP. A parallel pattern occurred in females. Warblers paired assortatively by pigmentation and EPP was less common in broods when the sexes were assortatively paired by carotenoid pigmentation. Results suggest that the most colorful birds obtain high quality social mates and advance reproductive success through WPP, show that correlations can arise between female ornamentation and patterns of EPP, and also uniquely suggest that social pairing patterns may influence extra-pair mating strategies. 相似文献

Males of the brush-legged wolf spider, Schizocosa ocreata (Araneae: Lycosidae), possess a conspicuous male secondary sexual character: dark pigmentation and tufts of bristles on the
tibiae of their forelegs. We tested several hypotheses relating to the role of this conspicuous trait in sexual selection.
Triad mating experiments suggest that the tufts do not play an obvious role in the operation of sexual selection by either
male competition or female choice, as there were no significant differences in the mating success of intact and experimentally
shaved males. However, females mated more often with males that initiated courtship first, suggesting that capture of a female’s
attention by male signalling may play a critical role. In behavioral experiments that paired a single male with a female in
arenas that allowed both visual and vibratory signal transmission during courtship, female receptivity did not vary significantly
with the presence or absence of tufts. However, experiments that isolated the visual component of communication (by eliminating
vibratory communication) revealed a significant effect of the presence of tufts: females showed receptivity less often to
males with tufts removed. Female response to visual signals was much greater in S. ocreata than in its sibling congener, Schizocosa rovneri, which lacks male tufts. We hypothesize that the tufts serve to increase the efficacy of visual displays of S. ocreata, as vibratory communication is constrained by the complex leaf litter habitat of some populations. Such environmental constraints
may make visual signalling over distance a critical factor for effective courtship communication, which may in turn strongly
influence male fitness.

Male reproductive success (RS) in polygamous species with minimal social systems is often determined by the number of mates. However, because male RS is translated through females, the number of offspring sired can also be influenced by female qualities. Empirically sufficient data to document how tradeoffs between mate number and quality influence male RS are seldom available for long-lived, iteroparous species. We combined long-term life history data (1983–2006) on the E. S. George Reserve (ESGR, MI, USA) with parentage data from 155 clutches of 59 female painted turtles (Chrysemys picta marginata) of varying reproductive frequencies (2003–2006) to determine the relative contribution of female numbers and qualities on male RS. One previously documented trait of female painted turtles that can have substantial influences on male RS is repeat paternity through the use of stored sperm to fertilize over 95 % of within-year clutches. In addition, our study found that second-clutch producing female painted turtles on the ESGR have higher among-year reproductive frequencies than do first-clutch only females. Multiple paternity was detected in 14.1 % of clutches (min-max?=?6.1–30.0 % annually), and the number of mates of both sexes was low annually (males 1.0; females 1.2) and over 4 years (males 1.1; females 1.7). Among successful males, RS varied substantially (1–32 offspring) and was strongly influenced by the combination of female reproductive frequency and repeat paternity (>38 % among years), but not mate number. Summary Mate choice cues in sage grouse were reinvestigated by analyzing relationships between male mating success and a range of suggested cues. Display cues were implicated by significant relationships between mating status (whether or not a male mated) and lek attendance, display rate (corrected for effects of female proximity and time of day) and an acoustic component related to temporal and frequency measure of a whistle emltted during the strut display. Although display rate and the acoustic component were intercorrelated, both exerted significant partial effects on mating success in mutivariate analyses. These display measures also differed significantly between males. In contrast, mating success was not significantly related to measures of territory characteristics, including size and proximity to the lek center, or to body size. These results resolve discrepancies between previous studies and provide a basis for experimental analysis of the role of female choice in this lek system. 相似文献

Male parental care is typically thought to come at a cost to mate attraction and future mating success. However, it has also
been hypothesized that paternal care may be under sexual, as well as natural, selection, such that good fathers actually attract
more mates. Here we show experimentally that in the sand goby, Pomatoschistus minutus, females prefer to mate with males that provide higher levels of parental care. We manipulated male behavior using (1) different
nest sizes and (2) an application of low-O2 water in the nests, and found that females consistently preferred males with elevated levels of care in dichotomous mate
choice tests. This complements our earlier study in which we showed that males increase the amount and quality of care they
provide in the presence of females. Our results demonstrate that male care may have evolved as a result of sexual selection
rather than natural selection alone, and furthermore, that male care may not necessarily be in conflict with mate attraction. 相似文献

Body size is clearly an important factor influencing the outcome of agonistic contests, but is often weakly correlated with dominance ranks in Zorotypus gurneyi Choe (Insecta: Zoraptera). The study of the development and dynamics of dominance relations using artificially constructed colonies show that age, or tenure within the colony, is the prime determinant of dominance among males. Dominance hierarchies become relatively stable within 2 or 3 days and males that emerge later normally begin at the bottom of the hierarchy regardless of size. Males interact much more frequently when they are simultaneously introduced to each other than when they are allowed to emerge at different times. In the latter case, males that emerge late appear to recognize relative dominance of older males and avoid direct contests. Considering the high correlation between dominance rank and mating success, there is a strong selective advantage to males that emerge earlier and such pressure of sexual selection may be responsible for the difference in life history strategies between Z. gurneyi and its sympatric congener, Z. barberi Gurney, in central Panama. 相似文献

Summary Social behavior of a species in the little-known insect order Zoraptera is described for the first time. Zorotypus gurneyi Choe (Insecta: Zoraptera) is a wing-dimorphic species that lives colonially under the bark of rotting logs in central Panama. Males are larger than females in total body size and fight each other to gain access to females. Highly linear and stable dominance hierarchies exist among males. Higher-ranking males show such agonistic behavior as jerking, chasing, head-butting, hindleg-kicking, and grappling, whereas subordinates often try to avoid contacts. Higher-ranking males, the dominant males in particular, are well recognized by others and relatively free of injuries. Although the dominant males are often the largest, the correlation between body size and dominance rank is not always significant. The mating system of Z. gurneyi is an example of female defense polygyny in which the dominant males obtain the majority of matings (75% on average). Mating success among Z. gurneyi males is much more variable than that of some lekking species. 相似文献

Sexual dimorphism, reproductive strategy, and human activities determine resource use by brown bears
Despite significant sexual dimorphism and differing reproductive strategies in carnivores, sexual segregation is rarely studied and is often overlooked in the management of wild populations. Potential nutritional constraints imposed by sexual dimorphism and differing reproductive strategies between the sexes have important implications, particularly when combined with differential effects of human activities on sex and age classes. We examined the effects of sexual dimorphism, reproductive strategies, and human activities (bear-viewing and hunting) on resource use by different sex and age classes of brown bears (Ursus arctos). Sexual segregation of habitat use and effects of experimental bear-viewing were quantified at a single site in south-central Alaska, U.S.A., by capturing, collaring, and observing brown bears at a salt marsh and salmon stream. Effects of salmon capture rate, availability of alternative salmon runs, harvest pressure, and numbers of annual visitors on sex and age class use were examined from data collected or previously published from 13 other sites. Bear-viewing sites on salmon streams where salmon capture rates were low (<4 salmon/hour) resulted in low use by adult males (<10% of all bears), except for sites with falls. However, maximum male use of viewing areas also depended on the availability of alternative salmon streams and harvest pressure. Use of habitats by females with dependent young was significantly related to the prevalence of adult males at the site. Thus, both sexual dimorphism and differing reproductive strategies led to sexual segregation in habitat use by bears. As a result of infanticide, females with young appear to prioritize avoidance of male bears over avoidance of humans when choosing habitats, in contrast to responses documented in herbivores. Because carnivores often exhibit both sexual dimorphism and infanticide, selection for sexual segregation is likely to be high. In these cases, the nutritional demands of large adult males, balanced with responses to human activity, drive dynamic temporal and spatial distributions of individuals in the population. 相似文献

Evaluating the contribution of individual and environmental determinants of reproductive success is essential to improve our understanding of sexual selection. In socially monogamous bird species with high rates of extrapair paternity, traits or environmental contexts affecting the number of within-pair young (WPY) produced by males can differ from those affecting the number of extrapair young fathered (EPY). Here, we use a 4-year dataset collected in contrasted environments to assess the factors affecting male reproductive success in tree swallows (Tachycineta bicolor), a species showing high levels of extrapair paternity. Our analyses revealed that the number of WPY was higher under better environmental conditions, while the number of EPY was mainly related to male characteristics. Males nesting in more intensive agricultural areas had fewer WPY produced and a lower reproductive success. Also, males breeding earlier in the season had more WPY. The presence of parasites reduced males’ reproductive success, mainly by reducing the number of EPY. The influence of male phenotype varied according to population density: Tarsus length variation had a greater effect on reproductive success at low population density than at high density, while wing length was also positively related to the number of EPY, more so at high than at low density. Altogether, our results suggest a complex interplay between individual and environmental determinants of reproductive success and imply that sexual selection dynamics varies depending on environmental contexts. 相似文献

Testosterone has been proposed to serve as the mediator that controls the relative effort that an individual male bird will
devote to mating effort versus parental effort. Here, we demonstrate a testosterone-influenced trade-off between parental
and mating efforts in male house finches. Male house finches with experimentally elevated testosterone fed nestlings at a
significantly lower rate, but sang at a higher rate than males without manipulated testosterone levels. Females mated to testosterone-implanted
males fed nestlings at a significantly higher rate than females mated to males without testosterone implants, resulting in
similar feeding rates for both treated and untreated pairs. The effects of testosterone on male house finches, however, were
not as dramatic as the effects of testosterone observed in some other socially monogamous species of birds. Because extra-pair
copulations are uncommon in house finches and males provide substantial amounts of parental care, these more modest effects
may be due to differences in how the allocation of reproductive effort affects the costs and benefits of different reproductive
behaviors.

Sperm characteristics associated with different male reproductive tactics in bluegills (Lepomis macrochirus) 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
We examined the availability and motility of sperm from parental and sneaker male bluegills (Lepomis macrochirus), a colonially nesting sunfish (Family Centrarchidae) with male parental care and a high incidence of cuckoldry by both sneaker
and satellite males. We found no differences between sneakers and parentals in length and swimming speed of sperm, or percent
and duration of sperm activity. In sneaker milt, however, sperm was almost 50% more concentrated than in parental milt (16.5×106 vs 11.5×106 sperm/μl of milt, respectively). Despite this difference in sperm concentration, stripped ejaculates from sneakers contained
almost 400 million fewer sperm (only 32% as many sperm) than those from parentals due to their much smaller stripped ejaculate
volumes (only about 19% that of parentals). Thus unless sneakers can compensate by releasing more sperm or gaining closer
proximity to eggs at the time of spawning, they may be at a disadvantage with respect to sperm competition. We discuss these
results in relation to models for the evolution of alternative reproductive behaviours in this species and suggest that the
cuckolders may be making the best of a bad situation.
