Two North Sea crude oils, weathered crude oil, n-alkanes, medical liquid paraffin and a fish oil were microencapsulated and added to seawater. This gave a medium containing both water soluble fractions (WSF) and oil particles, and thus simulated the conditions in natural seawater contaminated with oil. The microencapsulated oils were fed to Mytilus edulis L. in different concentrations, and the growth in terms of shell length of the mussels was measured in intervals of 24 to 48 h for 4 to 12d. With the crude oilss A and B, weathered crude oil and n-alkanes at concentrations1 mg l-1, shell growth rate decreased rapidly compared to controls. With liquid paraffin at levels of 1 to 12 mg l-1, a small but significant negative effect on shell growth occurred after 5 d of exposure. Exposure to fish oil at 1 and 4 mg l-1 gave no significant reduction in growth rate. The toxicity of the different hydrocarbons was not related to their content of aromatic fractions. Crude oil B was tested at concentrations ranging from 0.12 to 12 mg l-1. At 0.12 mg l-1 shell growth was not significantly different from the control, while at 0.25 and 0.50 mg l-1 a temporary and significant stimulation of growth was observed. The product concentration (C)xresponse (R) shows a linear regression on exposure time (t). The regression model CxR=75-0.18t is used to estimate EC-values (effect of a given concentration) for given response levels. The model gives a very good fit to observed data.

实验结果显示,A. azollae和S. javanicum的耐铀极限分别在10.0~30.0mg·L-1和1.0~10.0mg·L-1之间,A. azollae的抗铀性比S. javanicum强。  相似文献

The influence of suspended, natural silt (0 to 20 mg l-1) in addition to unicellular algal cells (Phaeodactylum tricornutum) (o to 20.000 cells ml-1) on clearance, growth and energetics in Mytilus edulis has been studied. Clearance increased by 32 to 43% by the addition of 5 mg silt l-1 as compared to clearance in a pure algal suspension. Ingestion and growth rate increased with algal concentration, and growth rate was further increased by 30 to 70% by the addition of 5 mg silt l-1. A growth rate comparable to maximum natural growth rates was reached only at the highest algal concentration in the presence of 5 mg siltl-1. Assimilation efficiency of P. tricornutum decreased from 77% at 5,000 cells ml-1 to 52% at 20,000 cells ml-1. In the experiments with silt added, some 20 to 30% of the assimilated organic matter originated from the suspended bottom material. Net growth efficiency increased with growth rate at a decelerating rate, approaching a maximum of about 70%. It is concluded that suspended bottom material, which is always present in M. edulis' natural habitats, serves as an additional food source, and that M. edulis depends on suspended bottom material to exploit fully its clearance potential, and to reach the maximum growth rates observed in nature.  相似文献

The influence of silt on growth of juvenile hard clams Mercenaria mercenaria (L.) (9 mm in mean shell length) was investigated in the laboratory using mixed suspensions of algae (50x106 Pseudoisochrysis paradoxa cells l-1) and fine-grained bottom sediments (0 to 44 mg l-1). Growth rates, expressed as percent increase in ash-free dry tissue weight, were not significantly affected by sediment concentrations up to 25 mg l-1. Significant reduction in growth (by 16% relative to controls fed only algae), and condition of clams, occurred at 44 mg silt l-1. The results of the 3-week growth experiment agree well with predictions made in an earlier study by integrating results of shortterm physiological measurements. Growth rates obtained with experimental algal-silt diets at 21°C (2.6 to 3.3% increase in dry tissue weight d-1) were comparable to those determined at ambient concentrations of Great South Bay particulates at 20°C (0.9 to 4.0% d-1). Levels of particulate inorganic matter in seawater from Great South Bay, New York, exhibited pronounced daily changes, and ranged from 6 to 126 mg dry weight l-1. Growth enhancement by the addition of silt to an algal diet, reported in mussels, surf clams and oysters, was not found in M. mercenaria. It is suggested that these three species are better suited than hard clams for culturing efforts in inshore turbid waters above uncompacted, muddy bottoms.Contribution No. 452 from the Marine Sciences Research Center, State University of New York at Stony Brook, USA  相似文献

The action of various concentrations of zinc on different phases of development of Arbacia lixula L. has been observed. The following concentrations were used in the experiment: 0.01, 0.1, 1 and 10 mg l-1; these concentrations were tested on unfertilized eggs, sperms, fertilized eggs and adult individuals. It was found that after 96 h a 0.01 mg l-1 concentration reduces the mobile sperm percentage compared with the control group. At concentrations of 0.1, 1 and 10 mg l-1 no mobile sperm were found after 96 h. Compared with the control group, the action of zinc on unfertilized eggs was to increase the percentage of eggs showing signs of cytolisis after 12, 36 and 60 h. In the case of fertilized eggs it was found that with a concentration of 0.01 mg l-1 the P5 pluteus stage was attainable; the percentage of forms reaching that stage was less than in the control group. At 0.1 mg l-1 only a very low percentage of eggs could reach the P5 pluteus stage; concentrations of 1 and 10 mg l-1 are incompatible with the normal development of an egg. Adult individuals kept in aquaria with 1 mg l-1 zinc showed no signs of suffering after 20 d. Gametes are proposed as the appropriate material for carrying out bioassays.  相似文献

Production and doubling times of the bacterial populations in the water around and over the reefs at Lizard Island, Great Barrier Reef were measured during summer and winter, 1982 and 1983. Bacterial productivity, determined from the rate of tritiated thymidine incorporation into DNA, was high over the reef flats and a Thalassia hemprichii sand flat (28 to 58 g Cl-1 d-1). Bacterial growth rates increased during the day and fell at night over the reef flats and seagrass bed. Growth rates were slower over the reef front and in open water. Doubling times ranged from about 2 d in the open water to about 3 h over the reef flat in summer. As numbers did not increase, grazing was probably intense on the reef flats. Growth rates were much slower in winter. The main source of organic nutrient used by the bacteria was probably mucus released following photosynthesis in the corals. The cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp. was sometimes very numerous, especially in summer when 2×108 cells l-1 were recorded in one water mass. The number of bacteria was also very high in summer, with values ranging from 1×109 to 2.5×109l-1.  相似文献

Acute toxicity tests were carried out on the marine amphipod Allorchestes compressa Dana using copper sulphate and some organocopper complexes. For copper sulphate, 96 h LC50 values of 0.11 and 0.5 mg Cu l-1 were determined for the juveniles and the adults, respectively, juveniles being 4.5 times more sensitive to copper than adults. Organocopper complexes were tested on adults only. The three water-soluble ligands nitrilotriacetic acid, 8-hydroxyquinoline-5-sulphonic acid and tannic acid ameliorated copper toxicity by decreasing the concentration of free ionic copper, while lipid-soluble ligands such as oxine and potassium ethylxanthogenate increased copper toxicity, presumably as a result of the complexes diffusing through the cell membrane and participating in injurious reaction. The copper complex with 2,9-dimethyll, 10-phenanthroline was the most toxic complex tested. It is suggested that the presence of these ligands in the receiving water should be taken into consideration when establishing water-quality criteria.  相似文献

Oyster (Ostrea edulis L.) seed was reared on five rations of Isochrysis galbana Parke: 10, 30, 100, 200 and 300 cells l-1, in an open-flow system. Physiological parameters such as clearance, ingestion, absorption and respiration rates were measured, and the scope for growth (SFG) calculated from these parameters was compared with actual growth over 20 d. Actual growth was negligible at 10 cells l-1 (daily maintenance ration=2.5% organic wt) and maximum (growth rate=13.64 d-1) at 200 cells l-1 (daily ration=43% organic wt), which also supported the maximum gross and net growth efficiencies (K 1=50%, K 2=85%). Ingestion rate was directly correlated to cell concentration up to maximum of 100 cells l-1, but further increases failed to support higher ingestions. Absorption efficiency decreased with increasing algal concentration from 95% down to 60%. Due to the costs of growth, respiration rate significantly increased when food was added above maintenance levels; however, metabolic costs associated with feeding activity were undetectable. The scope for growth calculated from these physiological parameters agreed with the long-term growth performance, validating the physiological energetics method as a valuable tool for predicting long-term growth performance under constant environmental conditions.  相似文献

The effects of body size and suspension density on filtration rates, assimilation efficiencies and respiration rates in the ribbed musselAulacomya ater (Molina) have been determined by means of short-term laboratory experiments. Filtration rates accelerate rapidly in response to increasing algal concentration up to approximately 10×106 cellsDunaliella primolecta l-1, beyond which a plateau is approached. Percentage increments are greatest in small individuals. Assimilation efficiencies are independent of body size, but decline rapidly with increasing ration to approach zero above 32×106 cells l-1. Increases in respiration rate accompany increments in filtration rate in all but the smallest size class tested. Filtration, assimilation efficiency and respiration measurements are used to calculate ingestion rations, assimilation rations and scope for growth for mussels of different sizes over a range of algal concentrations. Scope for growth, expressed as percentage change in body energy per day, is a declining function of body size, but larger individuals achieve their maximum growth rates at lower ration levels than smaller ones. Growth efficiency is independent of body size, and is maximal at 5×106 cells l-1, where 29 to 43% of ingested ration is converted into body energy. The applicability of these experimental results to natural ecosystems is discussed.  相似文献

When exposed to Prudhoe Bay crude oil in flowing seawater for 180 days, the small intertidal clam Macoma balthica showed behavioral, physical, physiological and biochemical changes. At a high concentration of oil in seawater (3.0 mg l-1) burrowing rate decreased, respiration rate increased, growth was inhibited, and very high mortalities resulted. The lowest concentration of oil in seawater (0.03 mg l-1) inhibited growth and caused reabsorption of gametes. One group of adverse oil effects which was related to sluggishness and disorientation of the clams appeared after a week of exposure to oil; another group related to a negative energy balance was not observed until 60 days. We conclude that chronic exposure of M. balthica to oil-in-seawater concentrations even as low as 0.03 mg l-1 will, in time, lead to population decreases. Please address requests for reprints to Dr. D. Juveniles of the amphipod Allorchestes compressa Dana were exposed to sodium selenite and to seleniferous leachate from coal fly-ash. A maximum acceptable toxicant concentration (MATC) for selenite of >44<93 g Se l-1 is indicated by the results for growth and viability. Leachate:sea water mixtures produced effects which were consistent with selenite toxicity but quantitatively less drastic than expected from the pure selenite work, perhaps because of sulphate antagonism. The results are compared with selenium toxicity data for other aquatic species, and high-light the difficulties of using application factors as the basis for water-quality criteria.  相似文献

The red mullet Mullus surmuletus is one of the main target species of the trawling fishery along the continental shelf off the Island of Majorca. The size distribution of the catches, and the reproduction, age and growth of this species have been studied based on sampling carried out from 1990 to 1992. The length range of the catches was between 10 and 32 cm, with a main distribution between 15 and 20 cm, but this included small specimens (recruits of 10 to 11 cm) from August. In the >19 cm length-class, females clearly dominated. Monthly variations in the gonadosomatic index (GSI) and in the percentage of mature specimens showed that males spawn from December to June, whereas the reproductive activity of the females centres around spring. Fifty percent of males and females mature at 15 and 16.8 cm, respectively, corresponding to 1 yr of age. Otolith age-readings indicate that the population exploited in the trawl fishery consists of six age-groups, including a very high proportion of individuals between 0 and 4 yr old. Population growth curves revealed that females grow comparatively slowly over a longer period of time and attain greater asymptotic sizes than males. The growth parameters for the whole population are: asymptotic length, L =31.28 cm; growth coefficient, K=0.211 yr-1; theoretical age when length is zero, t 0=-2.348 yr.  相似文献

Basing on a quantification of filtration, ingestion, assimilation, biodeposition, excretion and respiration rate, energy budgets were established in Mytilus chilensis Hupé in relation to body size and three different food concentrations of the unicellular green alga Dunaliella marina. The present quantifications revealed that in M. chilensis the ingestion rate only increases slightly with an increase in food concentration which, however, is counterbalanced by a significant decrease in assimilation efficiency in such a way that assimilation rate finally is nearly constant and independent of the food concentrations tested. The quantifications of these results are given by the a-values of the general allometric growth equation P=aWb relating the energy disposable for growth and reproduction (P; cal d-1 to body size (W; dry-tissue wt, g). The best energy budget was obtained at the lowest food concentration tested (0.8 mg algal dry wt l-1; at 12°C and 30 S) with an a-value of 58.8, while the energy budget at the highest food concentration (2.14 mg l-1) was only slightly lower with an a-value of 49.8; the b-values were 0.49 and 0.51, respectively. The net growth efficiencies (K2) decreased with increasing body size (from 20 mg to 3 000 mg drytissue wt) from 76.7 to 47.9% at the lowest food level and from 72.6 to 44.0% at the highest food level tested. These relatively high net growth efficiencies seem to reflect optimal experimental conditions. Furthermore, by a comparison of estimated growth (calculated on the basis of the best energy budget) with growth actually quantified in culture raft mussels in the south of Chile during the highest production period of the year, it is obvious that the energy budgets established really reflect the conditions experienced by the mussels in their natural environment. This research was supported by grants S-80-3 and C-80-1 of the D.I.D.-UACH, by CONICYT, Found. The crab Pachygrapsus laevimanus and the zebra winkle Austrocochlea constricta were exposed for 40 d to uranium (1.5 to 10 mg l-1) in continuous-flow sea water in separate starved and fed treatments, and the kinetics of uranium bioaccumulation were estimated from an exponential model. Starved and fed crabs took up U at a similar rate, which suggests that sea water was the major source of U to the crab; the fed crabs excreted U more rapidly than the starved crabs and this led to a lower net uptake of U by fed crabs. Fed and starved winkles took up U at similar rates and excreted it at similar rates, so the sea water was also the major source of U to winkles. Crabs took up more U than winkles; the concentration factors were 7 to 18 and 4, respectively. Uranium turnover was quite slow for both species (11 to 36 d) as it was also for winkle shells (6 d); this suggests that the rate-limiting processes which control turnover are biological (e.g. growth or tissue replacement) or physical (e.g. diffusion into the shell) rather than chemical (e.g. precipitation, adsorption or exchange). There was no effect of increasing U concentration in water on the U kinetic parameters.  相似文献

Short-term laboratory feeding experiments were conducted to determine the response of the hard clam Mercenaria mercenaria (L.) (32 mm in mean shell length) to increasing sediment concentrations. Clams were fed mixed suspensions of Pseudoisochrysis paradoxa (50 and 150 cells l-1) and bottom sediments (0 to 44 mg l-1). Algal ingestion rate deelined with increasing sediment loads. This resulted primarily from a reduction in clearance rate, which declined by 0.08 l h-1 g-1 (1.3%) for every 1 mg l-1 increase in sediment load. This reduction was of similar magnitude for juvenile (13 mm) clams. At the algal concentrations tested, pseudofaeces production was intermittent and inconspicuous below about 10 mg silt l-1. Loss of algae in pseudofaeces increased with increasing sediment loads; however, even at the highest silt and algal concentrations, clams lost a maximum of only 18% of the algae cleared from suspension. Thus, pseudofaeces production is not expected to cause significant loss of algal food at the sediment concentrations normally encountered in the natural environment ( ca 40 mg silt l-1). Absorption rate of total organic matter remained constant, at least up to silt concentrations of 20 mg l-1. Experiments using dual 51Cr:14C-formaldehyde-labelled sediment indicated that clams were able to counteract the dilution of algae by absorbing a considerable fraction (21 to 22%) of detrital sedimentary organics. Absorption efficiency of pure P. paradoxa ranged from 82% at 50 cells l-1 to 58% at 150 cells l-1. Integration of physiological rate measurements suggests that at moderate to high algal concentrations (300 g Cl-1), growth improvement by the addition of silt, documented in mussels, surf clams and oysters, is unlikely to occur in M. mercenaria. It is suggested that a suspension-feeding bivalve's success in maximizing its energy gain in a turbid environment depends on the combination of two features: a high selection efficiency and a high rate of pseudofaeces production. It is proposed that species which regulate ingestion primarily by producing pseudofaeces are better adapted to cope with high suspended sediment loads than species such as M. mercenaria, which control ingestion mainly by reducing clearance rate.Contribution No. 451 from the Marine Sciences Research Center, State University of New York at Stony Brook, USA  相似文献

Adult grass shrimp (Palaemonetes pugio) were collected during July and August, 1973, and exposed for 48-h periods to a series of sublethal cadmium (Cd) concentrations: 0.1 and 0.56 mg l-1 for metabolic studies; and 0.01, 0.05, 0.1, 0.3, 0.56 mg l-1 for locomotor studies. Treatment effects were tested singly and in combination at selected dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations ranging from near saturation to 0.8 mgl-1. Shrimp not exposed to Cd exhibited metabolic regulation between 6.5 and, 4.6 mg DOl-1, with progressively lower O2 consumption rates at lower DO concentrations. Oxygen consumption of Cd-exposed shrimp was suppressed overall relative to the non-Cd treated shrimp, and with one exception, the magnitude of metabolic suppression directly corresponded to Cd concentration. Locomotor activity of non-Cd exposed shrimp was relatively independent of DO concentration down to 2.8 mg DO l-1 and became significantly suppressed at 1.8 mg DO l-1 and below. Significant suppression of locomotion was evident in shrimp exposed to 0.56 mg Cd l-1, but was not seen in treatment groups of 0.3 mg Cd l-1 or lower. No interaction on locomotor activity of shrimp was detected between Cd exposure and oxygen concentration. The reduction of locomotor activity and metabolism at 0.56 mg Cd l-1 exposure is similar to that occurring under reduced oxygen condition. It is hypothesized that Cd acts in some manner to suppress O2 availability to P. pugio, a suggestion consistent with literature reports on adverse effects of Cd on fish respiratory enzymes and gill tissue.Contribution No. 351 of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Environmental Research Laboratory, Narragansett, Rhode Island. Feeding, growth and bioluminescence of the thecate heterotrophic dinoflagellate Protoperidinium huberi were measured as a function of food concentration for laboratory cultures grown on the diatom Ditylum brightwellii. Ingestion of food increased with food concentration. Maximum ingestion rates were measured at food concentrations of 600 g C l-1 and were 0.7 g C individual-1 h-1 (1.8 D. brightwelli cells individual-1 h-1). Clearance rates decreased asymptotically with increasing food concentration. Maximum clearance rates at low food concentration were ca. 23 l ind-1 h-1, which corresponds to a volume-specific clearance rate of 5.9x105 h-1. Cell size of P huberi was highly variable, with a mean diameter of 42 m, but no clear relationship between cell size and food concentration was evident. Specific growth rates increased with food concentration until maximum growth rates of 0.7 d-1 were reached at a food concentration of 400 g C l-1 (1000 cells ml-1). Food concentrations as low as 10 g C l-1 of D. brightwellii (25 cells ml-1) were able to support growth of P. huberi. The bioluminescence of P. huberi varied with its nutritional condition and growth rate. Cells held without food lost their bioluminescence capacity in a matter of days. P. huberi raised at different food concentrations showed increased bioluminescence capacity, up to food concentration that supported maximum growth rates. The bioluminescence of P. huberi varied over a diel cycle, and these rhythmic changes persisted during 48 h of continuous darkness, indicating that the rhythm was under endogenous control.  相似文献

The uptake and effect of dissolved copper on regulation of hemolymph osmolality and Na+, K+, Cl-, Ca++, and Mg++ concentrations in the shore crab Carcinus maenas (L.) were determined at 400 mOsm (=14 S) ambient salinity. One mg Cu l-1 resulted in 50% mortality in 11 to 22 d; the highest sensitivity was observed around the moulting period. 0.25 and 0.5 mg Cu l-1 were not lethal after a onemonth exposure. Ten, 1, and 0.5 mg Cu l-1 altered regulation of osmolality, Na+, K+, and Cl- concentrations, while 0.25 mg Cu l-1 did not. Exposure to 1 mg Cu l-1 reduced hemolymph osmolality and Na+, K+, and Cl- concentrations to 80 to 90% of controls within 4 to 6 d and no further reduction was observed during a 21-d exposure. The effect of various copper concentrations on these four parameters were almost identical and the highest sensitivity was observed around the moulting period. Hemolymph calcium levels increased 20 to 80% in crabs exposed to 1 mg Cu l-1, while they decreased 20 to 30% in crabs exposed to 0.5 mg Cu l-1. Prolonged exposure to copper caused 20 to 70% reductions in hemolymph magnesium levels. Crabs exposed to 0.5 mg Cu l-1 for 29 d accumulated copper in hepatopancreas, gills, carapace, heart, testes, and hypodermis, but not in muscles and hemolymph. Increased copper levels in crabs exposed to 0.25 mg Cu l-1 were observed in hepatopancreas, gills, and carapace only. The present results suggest that effects of copper on ion regulatory processes in part explain why the toxicity of copper towards euryhaline invertebrates increases at low salinities.  相似文献

Mussels (Mytilus edulis) were exposed to the algaeAlexandrium ostenfeldii, Chrysochromulina polylepis, Gyrodinium aureolum, Gymnodinium galatheanum andHeterosigma akashiwo for 24 h; significant reductions in growth rate, as compared to the control, were observed after exposure toA. ostenfeldii, C. polylepis, G. aureolum andG. galatheanum at initial concentrations of 4.5 × 106, 110 × 106, 9 × 106 and 120 × 106 cells l–1, respectively. Exposure to high initial concentrations of the non-toxic algaeTetraselmis suecica (174 × 106 cells l–1) andIsochrysis galbana (610 × 106 cells l–1) showed no adverse effect on growth rate. When mussels with reduced growth were transferred to clean seawater, they recovered to > 90% of control growth within 2 to 4 d. Exposure to algal filtrates of the toxic algal cultures produced no reduction in growth rate.  相似文献

Two mark-recapture studies, regular population censuses, field observations, and laboratory culture were used to study the life history of the tropical marine gastropod Cypraea annulus Linnaeus, 1758 from Cape Maeda, Okinawa Island, from April 1984 to March 1986. In the field, the average rate of increase in shell length of marked juvenile snails was 1.0±0.3 mm wk-1 (N=13), with a maximum of 1.5 mm wk-1 (initial shell length 10.6 to 17.2 mm). In the laboratory, the maximum growth rate of juveniles was 3.0 mm wk-1 with food ad libitum. Snails with primordial teeth on the shells grew at a rate of 0.1 to 0.5 mm wk-1 for about 2 wk. The adults continued to grow at a similar rate for an additional 3 to 6 wk, and ceased detectable growth when some females started spawning egg masses. In the littoral zone on Okinawa Island, snails reproduced throughout the year. Egg masses brooded by three females (shell length 17.4 to 21.3 mm) in the field contained 90 000 to 133 000 ova. In the laboratory, brooding periods of three females lasted 6,8, and 9 d. The estimated average frequency of spawning was 5 egg masses female-1 yr-1. The mean shell length of adult females (20.3 mm) was significantly larger than that of adult males (19.6 mm). The life-history strategy of C. annulus is characterized by rapid growth, high fecundity, and repeated spawning throughout the year.  相似文献
