Naturally weathered oil residues from an arid dumpsite in Al-Alamein, Egypt were analyzed for monoaromatic and triaromatic steranes to demonstrate the utility of biomarker compounds in assessing the chemical composition changes during the degradation of the released oil residues in a terrestrial environment. The characterizations of individual aromatic compounds were based on gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analyses. The results showed that triaromatic sterane distributions were similar in the oil residues of varying weathering degradation extents and correlated with a fresh crude oil sample of the Western Desert-sourced oil. Molecular ratios of triaromatic sterane compounds (ratios of C 28 20R /C 28 20S , C 27 20R /C 28 20R , and C 28 20S /[C 26 20R + C 27 20S ]) were proved to be suitable for source identification. Major changes in chemical compositions during weathering of the oil residues were the depletion of short chain mono- and tri-aromatic steranes in samples that had undergone extensive degradation. The results of triaromatic sterane distribution are in good agreement with weathering classification based on the analyses of saturate and aromatic hydrocarbons and the ratios of n -alkanes, PAHs and saturate biomarker compounds.  相似文献

Sorption of nonpolar (phenanthrene and butylate) and polar (atrazine and diuron) organic chemicals to oil-contaminated soil was examined to investigate oil effects on sorption of organic chemicals and to derive oil–water distribution coefficients (Koil). The resulting oil-contaminated soil–water distribution coefficients (Kd) for phenanthrene demonstrated sorption-enhancing effects at both lower and higher oil concentrations (Coil) but sorption-reducing (competitive) effects at intermediate Coil (approximately 1 g kg−1). Rationalization of the different dominant effects was attempted in terms of the relative aliphatic carbon content which determines the accessibility of the aromatic cores to phenanthrene. Little or no competitive effect occurred for butylate because its sorption was dominated by partitioning. For atrazine and diuron, the changes in Kd at Coil above approximately 1 g kg−1 were negligible, indicating that the presently investigated oil has little or no effect on the two tested compounds even though the polarity of the oil is much less than soil organic matter (SOM). Therefore, specific interactions with the active groups (aromatic and polar domains) are dominantly responsible for the sorption of polar sorbates, and thus their sorption is controlled by available sorption sites. This study showed that the oil has the potential to be a dominant sorptive phase for nonpolar pollutants when compared to SOM, but hardly so for polar compounds. The results may aid in a better understanding of the role of the aliphatic and aromatic domains in sorption of nonpolar and polar organic pollutants.  相似文献

Benzene and alkylbenzene biodegradation rates and patterns were measured using an in situ microcosm in a crude-oil contaminated aquifer near Bemidji, Minnesota. Benzene-D6, toluene, ethylbenzene, o-, m- and p-xylenes and four pairs of C3- and C4-benzenes were added to an in situ microcosm and studied over a 3-year period. The microcosm allowed for a mass-balance approach and quantification of hydrocarbon biodegradation rates within a well-defined iron-reducing zone of the anoxic plume. Among the BTEX compounds, the apparent order of persistence is ethylbenzene > benzene > m,p-xylenes > o-xylene  toluene. Threshold concentrations were observed for several compounds in the in situ microcosm, below which degradation was not observed, even after hundreds of days. In addition, long lag times were observed before the onset of degradation of benzene or ethylbenzene. The isomer-specific degradation patterns were compared to observations from a multi-year study conducted using data collected from monitoring wells along a flowpath in the contaminant plume. The data were fit with both first-order and Michaelis-Menten models. First-order kinetics provided a good fit for hydrocarbons with starting concentrations below 1 mg/L and Michaelis-Menten kinetics were a better fit when starting concentrations were above 1 mg/L, as was the case for benzene. The biodegradation rate data from this study were also compared to rates from other investigations reported in the literature.  相似文献

Most foods from plant origin usually contain 1–10 mg/kg (dry weight) of non-resolved isomeric alkanes in the range of the n-alkanes C20–C50 which are assumed to be residues from mineral oil products (in addition to the natural paraffins). In edible vegetable oils, concentrations may exceed 100 mg/kg. Since it was suspected that this contamination was mostly of environmental origin, particulate matter from air was analysed for the same range of paraffins. In a road tunnel, around 5 μg/m3 of such paraffins were found, corresponding to about 3% of the fine dust (PM10). The composition corresponded to that found in the particulate matter from the exhaust of diesel engines, which in turn largely corresponded to engine (lubricating) oil. In Swiss cities, the C20–C50 mineral paraffins in the PM10 from ambient air amounted to 0.1–1.5 μg/m3 (about 1% of the dust) and seemed to primarily originate from incomplete combustion of heating and diesel oil, lubricating oil, and road tar debris. On the countryside, the concentrations were around 0.03 μg/m3 (0.3% of the dust). Soil contained 0.5–10 mg/kg of these paraffins. The similarity of the molecular weight (volatility) distribution suggests that the food contamination with paraffins, is mostly from the air. A substantial proportion probably consists of lubricating oil. If this hypothesis is confirmed, measures should be investigated to reduce this contamination.  相似文献

In this work, the photocatalytic degradation of aqueous microcystin-LR was studied using TiO2 and ZnO as photocatalysts. The process was optimised and characterised at the bench scale (200 mL); both semiconductors exhibited a high degradation capacity at reaction times of 1 min (degradation greater than 95%). The transient species that were observed indicate that the degradation occurs via the multiple hydroxylation and elimination of the labile peptide residues of the molecule. When photocatalysis was applied in a continuous treatment system (20–50 L), the photocatalytic process exhibited a high degradation efficiency, which resulted in residual microcystin-LR concentrations that were less than 1 μg L?1 (C0 = 5 μg L?1).  相似文献

Unique daily measurements of water-soluble organics in fine (<2 μm) and coarse (>2 μm) aerosols were conducted at Alert in the Canadian Arctic in winter to spring of 1992. They yield insight into photochemical production and loss of organics during long-range transport and ozone depletion events following polar sunrise. Comprehensive analyses of α, ω-dicarboxylic acids (C2–C12), ω-oxocarboxylic acids (C2–C9) and α-dicarbonyls (C2, C3) as well as pyruvic acid and aromatic (phthalic) diacid were conducted using GC and GC/MS techniques. Oxalic (C2) acid was generally the dominant diacid species in both fine and coarse fractions, followed by malonic (C3) and succinic (C4) acids. Concentrations of total diacids in the fine aerosol fraction (0.2–64 ng m−3) were 5–60 times higher than those in the coarse fraction (0.01–3 ng m−3). After polar sunrise in early-March, the total concentration of fine aerosol diacids increased by a factor of 3–5 while the coarse mode did not change significantly. From dark winter to sunlit spring, temporal changes in correlations and ratios of these water-soluble organics to vanadium and sulfate measured simultaneously suggest that atmospheric diacids and related organic compounds are largely controlled by long-range atmospheric transport of polluted air during winter, but they are significantly affected by photochemical production. The latter can occur in sunlight either during transport to the Arctic or during photochemical events associated with surface ozone depletion and bromine chemistry near Alert in spring. Conversion of gaseous precursors to particulate matter via photochemical oxidation was intensified at polar sunrise, resulting in a peak in the ratio of total diacids to V. During ozone depletion events, complex patterns are indicated in photochemical production and loss depending on the diacid compound. Unsaturated (maleic and phthalic) diacids were inversely correlated with particulate Br whereas saturated diacids (C2–C4) positively correlated with particulate Br. These results suggest that Br chemistry associated with ozone depletion leads to degradation of unsaturated diacids and to the production of smaller saturated diacids.  相似文献

Fifty-five seasonal PM2.5 samples were collected March 2003–January 2004 at Changdao, a resort island located at the demarcation line between Bohai Sea and Yellow Sea in Northern China. Changdao is in the transport path of the continental aerosols heading toward the Pacific Ocean in winter and spring due to the East Asia Monsoon. Solvent-extractable organic compounds (SEOC), organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC) and water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) were analyzed for source identification based on molecular markers. This data set provides useful information for the downstream site researchers of the Asian continental outflow. Total carbon (TC, OC+EC) was ∼18 μg m−3 in winter, ∼9 μg m−3 in spring and autumn and a large part of the TC was WSOC (33% in winter, >45% in the other seasons). Winter and spring were the high SEOC seasons with n-fatty acids the highest at ∼290 and ∼170 ng m−3, respectively, followed by n-alkanes at ∼210 and ∼90 ng m−3, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were also at high at ∼120 and ∼30 ng m−3. High WSOC/TC, low C18:1/C18 of fatty acids, and low concentrations of labile PAHs such as benzo(a)pyrene, together with back trajectory analysis suggested that the aerosols were aged and transported. PAHs, triterpane and sterane distributions provided evidence that coal burning was the main source of the continental outflow. The detection of levoglucosan and β-sitosterol in nearly all the samples showed the impact of biomass burning.  相似文献

The concentrations of C1–C8 carbonyl compounds were measured at two urban sites in Hong Kong from October 1997 to September 2000. The daily total carbonyl concentrations were found to range from 2.4 to 37 μg m−3. Formaldehyde was the most abundant species, which comprised from 36 to 43% of the total detected carbonyls, followed by acetaldehyde (18–21%) and acetone (8–20%). The highest 24-hour average concentrations measured were 10 and 7.7 μg m−3 for formaldehyde and acetaldehyde, respectively. Seasonal and temporal variations in the concentrations of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde were not obvious, but lowest concentrations often occurred from June to August. The mean formaldehyde/acetaldehyde molar ratios at the two sites in summer (2.8±1.1 and 2.5±1.2) were significantly higher (p⩽0.01) than those in winter periods (1.9±0.6 and 2.0±0.6). The phenomena were explained by influences of both photochemical reactions and local meteorological conditions. Better correlations between formaldehyde and acetaldehyde, and between NOx and each of the two major carbonyls were obtained in winter periods indicating direct vehicular emissions were the principal sources. The ambient formaldehyde and acetaldehyde concentrations in the urban atmosphere of Hong Kong were within the normal ranges reported in the literature for other urban sites world-wide.  相似文献

Uptake of aromatic hydrocarbons (AH) by ice crystals during vapor deposit growth was investigated in a walk-in cold chamber at temperatures of 242, 251, and 260 K, respectively. Ice crystals were grown from ambient air in the presence of gaseous AH namely: benzene (C6H6), toluene (methylbenzene, C7H8), the C8H10 isomers ethylbenzene, o-, m-, p-xylene (dimethylbenzenes), the C9H12 isomers n-propylbenzene, 4-ethyltoluene, 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene (1,3,5-TMB), 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene (1,2,4-TMB), 1,2,3-trimethylbenzene (1,2,3-TMB), and the C10H14 compound tert.-butylbenzene. Gas-phase concentrations calculated at 295 K were 10.3–20.8 μg m−3. Uptake of AH was detected by analyzing vapor deposited ice with a very sensitive method composed of solid-phase micro-extraction (SPME), followed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS).Ice crystal size was lower than 1 cm. At water vapor extents of 5.8, 6.0 and 8.1 g m−3, ice crystal shape changed with decreasing temperatures from a column at a temperature of 260 K, to a plate at 251 K, and to a dendrite at 242 K. Experimentally observed ice growth rates were between 3.3 and 13.3×10−3 g s−1 m−2 and decreased at lower temperatures and lower value of water vapor concentration. Predicted growth rates were mostly slightly higher.Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) were not detected in ice above their detection limits (DLs) of 25 pg gice−1 (toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes) and 125 pg gice−1 (benzene) over the entire temperature range. Median concentrations of n-propylbenzene, 4-ethyltoluene, 1,3,5-TMB, tert.-butylbenzene, 1,2,4-TMB, and 1,2,3-TMB were between 4 and 176 pg gice−1 at gas concentrations of 10.3–10.7 μg m−3 calculated at 295 K. Uptake coefficients (K) defined as the product of concentration of AH in ice and density of ice related to the product of their concentration in the gas phase and ice mass varied between 0.40 and 10.23. K increased with decreasing temperatures. Values of Gibbs energy (ΔG) were between −4.5 and 2.4 kJ mol−1 and decreased as temperatures were lowered. From the uptake experiments, the uptake enthalpy (ΔH) could be determined between −70.6 and −33.9 kJ mol−1. The uptake entropy (ΔS) was between −281.3 and −126.8 J mol−1 K−1. Values of ΔH and ΔS were rather similar for 4-ethlytoluene, 1,3,5-TMB and tert.-butylbenzene, whereas 1,2,3-TMB showed much higher values.  相似文献

The large-scale air pollution episode due to the out-of-control biomass burning for agricultural purposes in Indonesia started in June 1997, has become a severe environmental problem for itself and the neighboring countries. The fire lasted for almost five months. Its impact on the health and ecology in the affected areas is expected to be substantial, costly and possibly long lasting. Air pollution Index as high as 839 has been reported in Malaysia. API is calculated based on the five pollutants: NO2, SO2, O3, CO, and respirable suspended particulates (PM10). It ranges in value from 0 to 500. An index above 101 is considered to be unhealthy and a value over 201 is very unhealthy (Abidin and Shin, 1996).The solvent-extractable organic compounds from four total suspended particulate (TSP) high-volume samples collected in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (Stations Pudu and SIRIM) were subjected to characterization – the abundance was determined and biomarkers were identified. Two of the samples were from early September when the fire was less intense, while the other two were from late September when Kuala Lumpur experienced very heavy smoke coverage which could be easily observed from NOAA/AVHRR satellite images. The samples contained mainly aliphatic hydrocarbons such as n-alkanes and triterpanes, alkanoic acids, alkanols, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The difference between the early and late September samples was very significant. The total yield increased from 0.6 to 24.3 μg m-3 at Pudu and 1.9 to 20.1 μg m-3 at SIRIM, with increases in concentration in every class. The higher input of vascular plant wax components in the late September samples, when the fire was more intense, was characterized by the distribution patterns of the homologous series n-alkanes, n-alkanoic acids, and n-alkanols, e.g., lower U : R, higher >C22/<C20 for n-alkanoic acids, higher >C20/<C20 for n-alkanols, a shift in Cmax from C16 to C26 for n-alkanoic acids and C18 to C28 for n-alkanols, and the presence of abundant moretane (17β(H), 21α(H)-hopanes). The biomarkers dehydroabietic acid and retene were not found in the samples suggesting there is a difference in the long-distance transport samples of an Asian forest fire and the controlled experiments reported in the literature. Similar to the biomass burning in Amazonia (Abas et al., 1995), the present study also showed an absence of conifer tracers in the smoke aerosols indicating tropical wood sources. Abundant friedelin, a specific biomarker for smoke from oak wood fires (Standley and Simoneit, 1990), was present in the late September samples when the fire was more intense. The results were compared to literature values from an earlier study of the haze episode on 29 September 1991 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (Abas and Simoneit, 1996).  相似文献

Comparisons were made between the predictions of six photochemical air quality simulation models (PAQSMs) and three indicators of ozone response to emission reductions: the ratios of O3/NOz and O3/NOy and the extent of reaction. The values of the two indicator ratios and the extent of reaction were computed from the model-predicted mixing ratios of ozone and oxidized nitrogen species and were compared to the changes in peak 1 and 8 h ozone mixing ratios predicted by the PAQSMs. The ozone changes were determined from the ozone levels predicted for base-case emission levels and for reduced emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and oxides of nitrogen (NOx). For all simulations, the model-predicted responses of peak 1 and 8 h ozone mixing ratios to VOC or NOx emission reductions were correlated with the base-case extent of reaction and ratios of O3/NOz and O3/NOy. Peak ozone values increased following NOx control in 95% (median over all simulations) of the high-ozone (>80 ppbv hourly mixing ratio in the base-case) grid cells having mean afternoon O3/NOz ratios less than 5 : 1, O3/NOy less than 4 : 1, or extent less than 0.6. Peak ozone levels decreased in response to NOx reductions in 95% (median over all simulations) of the grid cells having peak hourly ozone mixing ratios greater than 80 ppbv and where mean afternoon O3/NOz exceeded 10 : 1, O3/NOy was greater than 8 : 1, or extent exceeded 0.8. Ozone responses varied in grid cells where O3/NOz was between 5 : 1 and 10 : 1, O3/NOy was between 4 : 1 and 8 : 1, or extent was between 0.6 and 0.8. The responses in such grid cells were affected by ozone responses in upwind grid cells and by the changes in ozone levels along the upwind boundaries of the modeling domains.  相似文献

Dry deposition modelling typically assumes that canopy resistance (Rc) is independent of ammonia (NH3) concentration. An innovative flux chamber system was used to provide accurate continuous measurements of NH3 deposition to a moorland composed of a mixture of Calluna vulgaris (L.) Hull, Eriophorum vaginatum L. and Sphagnum spp. Ammonia was applied at a wide range of concentrations (1–100 μg m−3). The physical and environmental properties and the testing of the chamber are described, as well as results for the moorland vegetation using the ‘canopy resistance’ and ‘canopy compensation point’ interpretations of the data. Results for moorland plant species demonstrate that NH3 concentration directly affects the rate of NH3 deposition to the vegetation canopy, with Rc and cuticular resistance (Rw) increasing with increasing NH3 concentrations. Differences in Rc were found between night and day: during the night Rc increases from 17 s m−1 at 10 μg m−3 to 95 s m−1 at 80 μg m−3, whereas during the day Rc increases from 17 s m−1 at 10 μg m−3 to 48 s m−1 at 80 μg m−3. The lower resistance during the day is caused by the stomata being open and available as a deposition route to the plant. Rw increased with increasing NH3 concentrations and was not significantly different between day and night (at 80 μg m−3 NH3 day Rw=88 s m−1 and night Rw=95 s m−1). The results demonstrate that assessments using fixed Rc will over-estimate NH3 deposition at high concentrations (over ∼15 μg m−3).  相似文献

Ambient concentrations of n-alkanes with carbon number ranging from 17 to 36 were determined for PM2.5 samples collected in Taipei city during September 1997–February 1998. The measured concentrations of particulate n-alkanes were in the range of 69–702 ng m−3, considerably higher than the concentration levels observed in Los Angeles and Hong Kong. The concentration distributions of n-alkanes homologues obtained in this study exhibited peaks at C19, C24 or C25. This suggests that fossil fuel utilization, such as vehicular exhaust and lubricant residues, was an important contributor to the Taipei aerosol. Source apportionment of PM2.5 was conducted using carbon preference index (CPI, defined as the ratio of the total concentration of particulate n-alkanes with odd carbon number to that with even carbon number) and U : R ratio (the concentration ratio of unresolved components to resolved components obtained from chromatograms). The low CPI value (0.9–1.9) and high U : R ratio (2.6–6.4) for each sample further confirmed that fossil fuel utilization was the major source of n-alkanes in ambient PM2.5 of Taipei city. Estimates from these results showed that 69–93% of the n-alkanes in PM2.5 of the Taipei aerosol originated from vehicular exhaust. The higher concentration level of particulate n-alkanes in the Taipei aerosol was mainly a result of vehicular emissions.  相似文献

Respirable suspended particles high-volume samples were collected from a coastal-rural site in the centre of Portugal in August 1997 and their solvent-extractable organic compounds were subjected to characterisation by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Particles were also analysed by a thermal/optical technique in order to determine their black and organic carbon content. The total lipid extract yields ranged from 20 to 63 μg m−3, containing mainly aliphatic hydrocarbons such as n-alkanes, acids, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The higher input of vascular plant wax components was demonstrated by the distribution patterns of the n-alkanes, n-alkanoic acids and n-alkanols homologous series, with Cmax at C29, C22/C24 and C30, respectively. The CPI values for these series were in the range 1.8–9.7, being indicative of recent biogenic input from microbial lipid residues and flora epicuticular components. Specific natural constituents (e.g. phytosterols, terpenes, etc.) were identified as molecular markers. Some oxidation products from volatile organic precursors were also present in the aerosols. In addition, all samples had a component of petroleum hydrocarbons representing urban and vehicular emissions probably transported from the nearest cities and from the motorway in the vicinity. This data set could be used to make a mass balance with organic carbon, organic extracts and elutable matter, permitting also the comparison with lipid signatures observed for other regions.  相似文献

During the continuous monitoring of atmospheric parameters at the station Cape Point (34°S, 18°E), a smoke plume originating from a controlled fire of 30-yr-old fynbos was observed on 6 May 1997. For this episode, which was associated with a nocturnal inversion and offshore airflow, atmospheric parameters (solar radiation and meteorological data) were considered and the levels of various trace gases compared with those measured at Cape Point in maritime air. Concentration maxima in the morning of 6 May for CO2, CO, CH4 and O3 amounted to 370.3 ppm, 491 ppb, 1730 ppb and 47 ppb, respectively, whilst the mixing ratios of several halocarbons (F-11, F-12, F-113, CCl4 and CH3CCl3) remained at background levels. In the case of CO, the maritime background level for this period was exceeded by a factor of 9.8. Differences in ozone levels of up to 5 ppb between air intakes at 4 and 30 m above the station (located at 230 m above sea level) indicated stratification of the air advected to Cape Point during the plume event. Aerosols within the smoke plume caused the signal of global solar radiation and UV–A to be attenuated from 52.4 to 13.0 mW cm−2 and from 2.3 to 1.3 mW cm−2, respectively, 5 h after the trace gases had reached their maxima. Emission ratios (ERs) calculated for CO and CH4 relative to CO2 mixing ratios amounted to 0.042 and 0.0040, respectively, representing one of the first results for fires involving fynbos. The CO ER is somewhat lower than those given in the literature for African savanna fires (average ER=0.048), whilst for CH4 the ER falls within the range of ERs reported for the flaming (0.0030) and smouldering phases (0.0055) of savanna fires. Non-methane hydrocarbon (NMHC) data obtained from a grab sample collected during the plume event were compared to background levels. The highest ERs (ΔNMHC/ΔCH4) have been obtained for the C2–C3 hydrocarbons (e.g. ethene at 229.3 ppt ppb−1), whilst the C4–C7 hydrocarbons were characterised by the lowest ERs (e.g. n-hexane at 1.0 and n-pentane at 0.8 ppt ppb−1).  相似文献

The present paper presents results from the analysis of 29 individual C2–C9 hydrocarbons (HCs) specified in the European Commission Ozone Directive. The 29 HCs are measured in exhaust from common, contemporary vehicle/engine/fuel technologies for which very little or no data is available in the literature. The obtained HC emission fingerprints are compared with fingerprints deriving from technologies that are being phased out in Europe. Based on the total of 138 emission tests, thirteen type-specific fingerprints are extracted (Mean ± SD percentage contributions from individual HCs to the total mass of the 29 HCs), essential for receptor modelling source apportionment. The different types represent exhaust from Euro3 and Euro4 light-duty (LD) diesel and petrol-vehicles, Euro3 heavy-duty (HD) diesel exhaust, and exhaust from 2-stroke preEuro, Euro1 and Euro2 mopeds. The fuels comprise liquefied petroleum gas, petrol/ethanol blends (0–85% ethanol), and mineral diesel in various blends (0–100%) with fatty acid methyl esters, rapeseed methyl esters palm oil methyl esters, soybean oil methyl or sunflower oil methyl esters. Type-specific tracer compounds (markers) are identified for the various vehicle/engine/fuel technologies. An important finding is an insignificant effect on the HC fingerprints of varying the test driving cycle, indicating that combining HC fingerprints from different emission studies for receptor modelling purposes would be a robust approach. The obtained results are discussed in the context of atmospheric ozone formation and health implications from emissions (mg km?1 for LD and mopeds and mg kW h?1 for HD, all normalised to fuel consumption: mg dm?3 fuel) of the harmful HCs, benzene and 1,3-butadiene.Another important finding is a strong linear correlation of the regulated “total” hydrocarbon emissions (tot-HC) with the ozone formation potential of the 29 HCs (ΣPO3 = (1.66 ± 0.04) × tot-RH; r2 = 0.93). Tot-HC is routinely monitored in emission control laboratories, whereas C2–C9 are not. The revealed strong correlations broadens the usability of data from vehicle emission control laboratories and facilitates the comparison of the ozone formation potential of HCs in exhaust from of old and new vehicle/engine/fuel technologies.  相似文献

Currently, in operational modelling of NH3 deposition a fixed value of canopy resistance (Rc) is generally applied, irrespective of the plant species and NH3 concentration. This study determined the effect of NH3 concentration on deposition processes to individual moorland species. An innovative flux chamber system was used to provide accurate continuous measurements of NH3 deposition to Deschampsia cespitosa (L.) Beauv., Calluna vulgaris (L.) Hull, Eriophorum vaginatum L., Cladonia spp., Sphagnum spp., and Pleurozium schreberi (Brid.) Mitt. Measurements were conducted across a wide range of NH3 concentrations (1–140 μg m−3).NH3 concentration directly affects the deposition processes to the vegetation canopy, with Rc, and cuticular resistance (Rw) increasing with increasing NH3 concentration, for all the species and vegetation communities tested. For example, the Rc for C. vulgaris increased from 14 s m−1 at 2 μg m−3 to 112 s m−1 at 80 μg m−3. Diurnal variations in NH3 uptake were observed for higher plants, due to stomatal uptake; however, no diurnal variations were shown for non-stomatal plants. Rc for C. vulgaris at 80 μg m−3 was 66 and 112 s m−1 during day and night, respectively. Differences were found in NH3 deposition between plant species and vegetation communities: Sphagnum had the lowest Rc (3 s m−1 at 2 μg m−3 to 23 at 80 μg m−3), and D. cespitosa had the highest nighttime value (18 s m−1 at 2 μg m−3 to 197 s m−1 at 80 μg m−3).  相似文献

SO2 dry deposition was studied over short vegetation, in Portugal, by means of the concentration gradient method. The experimental study involved one first phase of long-term measurements carried out in a grassland and, subsequently, a second period of several 1997 intensive field campaigns performed in three places representing different climate and surface conditions. Temporal and spatial patterns of dry deposition parameters show that downward fluxes of SO2 are by some extent affected by surface processes. Median Rc varied from 140 s cm−1 to values around 200 s cm−1, in a wide range of environmental conditions. Stomatal uptake is an important sink when vegetation is biologically active, but its contribution is effectively low when compared with non-stomatal mechanisms, especially when the surface is wet. Under dry conditions Rc increases by a factor of two, but SO2 deposition rates then still are significant. The parameterisation of the surface resistance for SO2 proved to be difficult, but Vd derived with the Erisman parameterisation (Erisman et al., Atmos. Environ. 28 (16) (1994) 2595) compared best with measured values, at low time resolution scale and especially under moisture conditions.  相似文献

Using the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico as an impetus, we explored the potential for TiO2-mediated photocatalytic reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation to increase the bioavailability (solubility) and biodegradability of weathered oil after a spill. Food grade TiO2, which is FDA approved for use as food additive in the United States, was tested as a photocatalyst for this novel application. Photocatalytic pre-treatment (0.05 wt.% TiO2, UV irradiation 18 W m?2, 350–400 nm) for 24 h in a bench top photoreactor increased the soluble organic carbon content of weathered oil by 60%, and enhanced its subsequent biodegradation (measured as O2 consumption in a respirometer) by 37%. Photocatalytic pre-treatment was also tested outdoors under sunlight illumination, but no significant increase in solubility or biodegradation was observed after 11 d of exposure. Although sunlight irradiation of food-grade TiO2 generated ROS (assessed by the degradation of 4-chlorophenol as a probe compound), the efficacy of weathered oil pre-treatment was apparently hindered by sinking of the photocatalysts under quiescent conditions and illumination occlusion by the oil. Overall, results indicate that photocatalytic pre-treatment to stimulate bioremediation of weathered oil deserves further consideration, but controlling the buoyancy and surface hydrophobicity of the photocatalysts will be important for future efforts to enable ROS generation in proximity to the target compounds.  相似文献
