Evidence is presented to show that a serious leaf spot disease of potato which appeared each year in the Punjab since 1978 is primarily due to ozone: - 1.(i) The symptoms of the leaf spot were similar to the ozone stipple of potato reported in the U.S.A.
- 2.(ii) Activated charcoal and ethylenediurea effectively controlled the spots.
- 3.(iii) Elevated ozone in the atmosphere was detected with the bioindicators Nicotiana tabacum var. Bel-W3 and potato variety Cherokee. This is the first report of ozone injury to a crop plant in India.

Dry deposition flux of major ions (Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, NH4+, F-, Cl-, NO3- and SO4(2-) to natural surfaces [guava (Psidium guyava) and peepal (Ficus religiosa) leaves] are determined at Rampur, a rural site of semi-arid region of India. Dry deposition flux is the highest for Ca2+ on guava leaves and for NH4+ on peepal leaves. Overall dry deposition flux is higher on guava leaves than of peepal leaves. The variation in deposition flux may be due to surface characteristics (surface roughness) and arrangement of leaves. Peepal leaves are arranged along the axis of the stem, whereas guava leaves are at right angles to the stem. The deposition flux of cations contributes 66% and 76% of dry deposition of all major ions on guava and peepal leaves, respectively as soil is major contributor towards dry deposition flux in tropical regions. ANOVA revealed no significant seasonal difference in deposition, although there is a trend for higher in winter. Deposition velocities of NH4+, NO3- and SO4(2-) are greater on guava leaves than peepal leaves, which can be attributed to the rougher surface of the guava leaf. 相似文献

Surface ozone is mainly produced by photochemical reactions involving various anthropogenic pollutants, whose emissions are increasing rapidly in India due to fast-growing anthropogenic activities. This study estimates the losses of wheat and rice crop yields using surface ozone observations from a group of 17 sites, for the first time, covering different parts of India. We used the mean ozone for 7 h during the day (M7) and accumulated ozone over a threshold of 40 ppbv (AOT40) metrics for the calculation of crop losses for the northern, eastern, western and southern regions of India. Our estimates show the highest annual loss of wheat (about 9 million ton) in the northern India, one of the most polluted regions in India, and that of rice (about 2.6 million ton) in the eastern region. The total all India annual loss of 4.0–14.2 million ton (4.2–15.0%) for wheat and 0.3–6.7 million ton (0.3–6.3%) for rice are estimated. The results show lower crop loss for rice than that of wheat mainly due to lower surface ozone levels during the cropping season after the Indian summer monsoon. These estimates based on a network of observation sites show lower losses than earlier estimates based on limited observations and much lower losses compared to global model estimates. However, these losses are slightly higher compared to a regional model estimate. Further, the results show large differences in the loss rates of both the two crops using the M7 and AOT40 metrics. This study also confirms that AOT40 cannot be fit with a linear relation over the Indian region and suggests for the need of new metrics that are based on factors suitable for this region. 相似文献

Kodaikkanal, India, suffered mercury contamination due to emissions and waste from a thermometer factory. Kodai Lake is situated to the north of the factory. The present study determined mercury in waters, sediment and fish samples and compared the values with those from two other lakes, Berijam and Kukkal. Total mercury (Hg(T)) of 356-465 ng l(-1), and 50 ng l(-1) of mercury in methyl mercury form were seen in Kodai waters while Berijam and Kukkal waters showed significantly lower values. Kodai sediment showed 276-350 mg/kg Hg(T) with about 6% methyl mercury. Berijam and Kukkal sediments showed Hg(T) of 189-226 mg/kg and 85-91 mg/kg and lower methylation at 3-4% and 2%, respectively. Hg(T) in fish from Kodai lake ranged from 120 to 290 mg/kg. The results show that pollution of the lake has taken place due to mercury emissions by the factory. 相似文献

Increasing concern over the level of nitrogen inputs to forests in polluted rain has led to a number of suggestions of possible adverse consequences under the general heading of nitrogen saturation. A saturated ecosystem may be one (a) in which the trees show no growth response to the addition of further nitrogen, (b) in which addition of further nitrogen leads to growth disturbances or reduction, or (c) in which elevated nitrogen inputs lead to increased losses of nitrate in streamwater. Experience gained from forest fertilizer experiments is used to examine each of these suggestions. A definition involving a lack of growth response (a) is shown to be based on a lack of understanding of the continuing changing patterns of nitrogen demand and mineralization in even-aged forests. Similarly, using growth disturbances (b) is unsatisfactory because, it is suggested, these are either secondary deficiencies that appear once growth accelerates with added nitrogen or are a consequence of changing growth with increasing size. A definition based on increased loss of nitrate is, by analogy with the situation for sulphate, at least superficially attractive. However, the fact that nitrate retention is predominantly biological, rather than chemical, makes for difficulties and the limited evidence available suggests that many exceptions and variations may exist. Whilst experience with forest fertilizers might not be entirely apposite, for example foliar uptake from polluted rain may be a factor, it is urged that at least any hypothesis put forward should be compatible with information gained from fertilizer trials. 相似文献

A long-term study of measurement of concentration of NO x, SO 2 and TSP pollutants have been done in a port and harbour region in India. Monthly measurements of gaseous and particulate pollutants were made at six monitoring stations from January 1997 to December 2000. Meteorological data was also simultaneously collected. In this study, the relationship between monitored ambient air quality data and meteorological factors, such as wind speed, temperature, is statistically analysed, using the SPSS package. The monthly mean concentrations of NO x, SO 2 and TSP were in the range of 19.5–59.0 μg/m3, 8.6–51.3 μg/m3 and 88.2–199.3 μg/m3, respectively. The results show that TSP is strongly correlated with NO x and SO 2 with a correlation coefficient of 0.83 and 0.82, respectively. The correlation coefficients for TSP, NO x, and SO 2 with wind are –0.78, –0.78, and –0.88, respectively. 相似文献

Airborne measurements of gaseous and particulate sulfur and nitrogen pollutants were made in southwestern Kentucky on the afternoon of October 21, 1979. Back-trajectory analysis indicates that the sampled air parcel moved over northern Florida, Alabama, and western Tennessee during the two days prior to sampling. Before moving over Florida, the air parcel was over the Atlantic Ocean for at least five days. Analytical long-range transport (LRT) model predictions based on anthropogenic emissions account for only about 75% of the airborne measured concentrations of 14.7 μg m ?3 for SO 2 and 4.8 μg m ?3 for SO 4 2?. The remaining 25 % is thought to be due to biogenic sulfur emissions from the extensive wetland areas along the Gulf Coast. Forward-trajectory analysis indicates that the air parcel moved to the Adirondack Mountains of New York State 24 hours after sampling. Model predictions indicate that SO 2 and SO 4 2? mean layer concentrations at the Adirondacks were 24 and 16 μg ?3, respectively. Almost half of this sulfur was estimated to come from emissions in the heavily industrialized region along the Ohio River Valley. Further comparisons used a measurement data base obtained in southeastern Canada and the state of Arkansas during August 1976. An air parcel was tracked for seven days as it entered the north central United States, stagnated over the lower midwest, and then moved to eastern Canada. Model predictions were in substantial agreement with regional SO 4 2? concentrations measured at a number of ground-level sites. Average SO 4 2? concentrations measured in central Arkansas on August 10, 1976 were 20 μ m ?3 vs. a modeled value of 19 μ m ?3. Average SO 4 2? concentrations measured in Nova Scotia four days later were 22 μg ?3 vs. a modeled estimate of 24 μg ?3. 相似文献

A Decentralized Wastewater Treatment System (DEWATS) provides an economically feasible and efficient wastewater treatment solution especially in developing countries. It has an enormous potential for developing a sustainable environmental sanitation system. In this study, the treatment efficiency of eight DEWATS plants was evaluated in the state of Maharashtra, India, for their performance in terms of selected physico-chemical parameters of the wastewater. Although the efficiency of some of the plants was lower than that reported in literature, the effluent quality of all the plants was within the permissible discharge limits of the Central Pollution Control Board for all the parameters. Comprehensive assessment of Plant I was carried in terms of its technical and socio-economic aspects. Moreover, LCA tool has been utilized to evaluate the environmental impacts of the operation stage of DEWATS. The midpoint, CML 2001 (April 2015) methodology was adopted, in which 11 impact categories were considered. From the life cycle impact assessment and interpretation, the main impacts are identified as releases of COD, P-PO43?, and N-NH4+ to water bodies and disposal of sludge. Due to negligible energy consumption, the operation stage was found to be less damaging to the environment. Diclofenac, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), has caused catastrophic vulture declines across the Indian sub-continent. Here, an indirect ELISA is used to detect and quantify diclofenac in 1251 liver samples from livestock carcasses collected across India between August 2007 and June 2008, one to two years after a ban on diclofenac manufacture and distribution for veterinary use was implemented. The ELISAs applicability was authenticated with independent data obtained using LC-ESI/MS. Of 1251 samples, 1150 (91.9%) were negative for diclofenac using both methods, and 60 (4.8%) were positive at 10-4348 and 10-4441 μg kg(-1) when analysed by ELISA and LC-ESI/MS, respectively. The residue level relationship in the 60 positive samples was highly significant (p < 0.001, r(2) = 0.644). Data suggest that this immunological assay could be used not only for cost effective sample screening, but also for residue level semi-quantification. 相似文献

ABSTRACT From the Indian national point of view, the importance of coal carbonizing industries is great and growing. These industries produce huge quantities of highly polluted effluents and discharge them into rivers without proper treatment. A large coke plant of Bharat Coking Coal Ltd. has been surveyed, and the impact of its effluent on surface water quality is discussed. Approximately 175-200 m 3 of effluents are discharged from the plant every day. Land application has been considered as a low-cost means of disposal of coke oven effluents. Column lysimeters were prepared by collecting soil from a nearby agricultural field, putting it layerwise into a column, and compacting it carefully to simulate the original in situ conditions. Raw effluents, diluted effluent, and water (as a blank) were applied to the three lysimeters twice a week with a 5 cm flooding. Upon application of diluted effluent (1:1) into lysimeter No. 2, the leachate collected at 190 cm depth was within the tolerance limit of drinking water standard (IS 10,500). The impact of raw and diluted effluent on groundwater quality and soil are discussed. The renovation efficiency of living filter (lysimeter No. 2) was 99.37% for oil and grease, 86.92% for COD, and 53.22% for TDS, and it is estimated that 2.73 hectares of land can be irrigated with the effluents of the coke plant without deteriorating groundwater and soil quality. 相似文献

River Swarna, a small tropical river originating in Western Ghats (at an altitude of 1,160 m above mean sea level) and flowing in the southwest coast of India discharges an average of 54 m 3s ?1 of water into the Arabian Sea, of which significant part is being discharged during the monsoon. No studies have been made yet on the water chemistry of the Swarna River basin, even as half a million people of Udupi district use it for domestic and irrigational purposes. As large community in this region depends on the freshwater of Swarna River, there is an urgent need to study the trace element geochemistry of this west flowing river for better water management and sustainable development. The paper presents the results on the biogeochemistry of dissolved trace elements in the Swarna River for a period of 1 year. The results obtained on the trace elements show seasonal effect on the concentrations as well as behavior and thus forming two groups, discharge driven (Li, Be, Al, V, Cr, Ni, Zr, In, Pb, Bi and U) and base flow driven (groundwater input; Mn, Fe, Co, Cu, Ga, Zn, As, Se, Rb, Sr, Ag, Cd, Cs, Ba and Tl) trace elements in Swarna River. The biogeochemical processes explained through Hierarchical Cluster Analysis show complexation of Fe, Ga and Ba with dissolved organic carbon, redox control over Mn and Tl and biological control over V and Ni. Also, the water quality of Swarna River remains within the permissible limits of drinking water standards. 相似文献

The Coordinating Research Council, Inc. (CRC) held its 17th On-Road Vehicle Emissions Workshop in March 2007, where results of the most recent on-road vehicle emissions research were presented. We summarize ongoing work from researchers who are engaged in improving our understanding of the role and contribution of mobile sources to ambient air quality and emission inventories. Participants in the Workshop discussed efforts to improve mobile source emission models, light- and heavy-duty vehicle emissions measurements, on- and off-road emissions measurements, effects of fuels and lubricating oils on emissions, as well as emerging issues and topics for future research. 相似文献
