In 1971 an orientating study was started concerning the ground-level concentrations of sulphate and sulphuric acid relative to sulphur dioxide. In order to achieve a more selective method for the determination of sulphuric acid, the separation of sulphuric acid from sulphates by isopropanol was used. After separation sulphuric acid and sulphate are determined spectrophotometrically with barium chloranilate. Air samples were taken with air samplers using 0.8 μm pore cellulose triacetate filters. In the winter 1971–1972 at Arnhem the ratio sulphate/total sulphur correlated significantly with the relative humidity and decreased with increasing SO2 concentration. The mean value of the ratio was 12.5% at a mean SO2 concentration of 71 μg m−3. The mean ratio H2SO4/total sulphur was 0.34%. In summer 1972, with a mean ratio sulphate/total sulphur of 36.8% at a mean SO2 level of 8 μg m−3, there was a correlation between sulphate and NH3 on days with a relative humidity >80%; this suggests an influence on the oxidation rate by NH3. The amounts of NH4+, SO42−, and NO3 give rise to the supposition that the greater part of sulphate and nitrate is present as ammonium salts. The measurements were continued at Arnhem and Rotterdam (Rijnmond area) in 1973, 1975 and 1976. In these years there was a strong decrease in SO2 concentration with a less stronger decrease in sulphate concentration. This together with the uniform distribution of sulphates in The Netherlands indicates that the sulphate level is caused mainly by long range transport. There was no increased reactivity in the formation of sulphates in the industrial Rijnmond area as compared to the eastern part of The Netherlands. Increased H2SO4 concentrations occurred as a result of transport of aerosols over sea by western winds. In summer 1976 there were significant correlations between both sulphate and nitrate with ozone at all the measuring stations, from which the existence of photochemical reactions over large areas can be concluded.  相似文献

We present two years (January 2007–December 2008) of atmospheric SO2, NO2 and NH3 measurements from ten background or rural sites in nine provinces in China. The measurements were made on a monthly basis using passive samplers under careful quality control. The results show large geographical and seasonal variations in the concentrations of these gases. The mean SO2 concentration varied from 0.7 ± 0.4 ppb at Waliguan on Qinghai Plateau to 67.3 ± 31.1 ppb at Kaili in Guizhou province. The mean NO2 concentration ranged from 0.6 ± 0.4 ppb at Waliguan to 23.9 ± 6.9 ppb at Houma in southern Shanxi. The mean NH3 concentration ranged from 2.8 ± 3.0 ppb at Shangdianzi in northeastern Beijing to 13.7 ± 8.4 ppb at Houma. At most sites, SO2 and NO2 peaked in winter and reached minima in summer, while NH3 showed maximum values in summer and lower values in cold seasons. On the whole, the geographical distributions of the observed gas concentrations are consistent with those of emissions. The ground measurements of SO2 and NO2 are contrasted to the SCIAMACHY SO2 and OMI NO2 tropospheric columns, respectively. Although the satellite data can capture the main features of emissions and concentrations of SO2, they do not reflect the variations of SO2 in the surface layer. The situation is better for the case of NO2. The OMI NO2 columns capture the geographical differences in the ground NO2 and correlate fairly well with the ground levels of NO2 at six of the ten sites.  相似文献

Recent epidemiological and toxicological studies have shown associations between particulate matter and human health. However, the estimates of adverse health effects are inconsistent across many countries and areas. The stratification and interaction models were employed within the context of the generalized additive Poisson regression equation to examine the acute effects of fine particles on respiratory health and to explore the possible joint modification of temperature, humidity, and season in Beijing, China, for the period 2004–2009. The results revealed that the respiratory health damage threshold of the PM2.5 concentration was mainly within the range of 20–60 μg/m3, and the adverse effect of excessively high PM2.5 concentration maintained a stable level. In the most serious case, an increase of 10 μg/m3 PM2.5 results in an elevation of 4.60 % (95 % CI 3.84–4.60 %) and 4.48 % (95 % CI 3.53–5.41 %) with a lag of 3 days, values far higher than the average level of 0.69 % (95 % CI 0.54–0.85 %) and 1.32 % (95 % CI 1.02–1.61 %) for respiratory mortality and morbidity, respectively. There were strong seasonal patterns of adverse effects with the seasonal variation of temperature and humidity. The growth rates of respiratory mortality and morbidity were highest in winter. And, they increased 1.4 and 1.8 times in winter, greater than in the full year as PM2.5 increased 10 μg/m3.  相似文献

The dry deposition velocities and fluxes of ammonia have been estimated from measurements of the vertical gradient of ammonia and micrometeorology above a spruce forest in western Jutland, Denmark. Measurements have been made in seven periods, each lasting about one week and covering all seasons and different meteorological situations. Different deposition characteristics were observed, depending on the ammonia concentration and the relative humidity. At conditions with westerly winds, the wind brings air masses from the North Sea with low concentration levels of ammonia to the site, while at conditions with easterly winds, the air have passed central Jutland with large emission areas. Some of the relatively low deposition velocities or emissions were observed during conditions with low ammonia concentration and westerly winds. These observations might relate to a compensation point of the forest, i.e. an ammonia concentration below which the trees and/or the surface emit ammonia due to an equilibrium with the ammonia inside the needles or on the surface. Emission of ammonia was also observed at relatively high ammonia concentration levels (above 2 μg NH3–N m-3), mainly during one measuring period characterized by easterly winds with dry conditions and high ammonia concentrations, and the emissions might relate to evaporation from ammonia saturated surfaces or emission from mineralization in the forest soil. In general, relatively high net deposition velocities were observed during conditions with relative humidity above 80% or at ammonia concentrations moderate higher than a given (temperature dependent) compensation point. During stable conditions some observations revealed that the gradient above the canopy not necessarily represents the exchange with the canopy.  相似文献

Tapered element oscillating microbalances (TEOMs) are used in the UK Automatic Monitoring Network for the continuous measurement of ambient airborne particles. Used TEOM filters from Swansea, Cardiff and Pembroke were examined under high-resolution field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). Clusters of calcium sulphate crystals, gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O) and anhydrite (CaSO4) were abundant on spring and summer filters, and not present on autumn and winter filters. From textural considerations, the sulphates must have crystallised on the filter surfaces, either by dissolution and recrystallisation of CaSO4 collected as particles, or by direct precipitation from saline water collected on the filters; in much the same way as the formation of ‘desert roses’ by the evaporation of saline pore waters in desert sands. The proposed mechanism for the formation of these crystals has two important implications. Firstly, if the filters are episodically saturated with water, then on occasion the recorded masses will consist of both particles plus water, causing errors in the results of continuous monitoring; an important consideration for epidemiological studies based on TEOM data. Secondly, past toxicological experiments undertaken on TEOM-derived ‘PM10’ may have investigated material containing a significant component of in situ formed crystals, rather than the original PM10.  相似文献

The current discourse addresses fiscal issues, financial decentralization, and environmental quality and significantly affects economic development and sustainability. This investigation aims to address the research gap in fiscal decentralization and haze pollution for innovation and sustainable growth. This study uses the annual data of 270 Chinese cities from 2007 to 2016 for comprehensive analysis and employs spatial regression methods. The key findings imply that haze pollution in neighbouring cities causes further ecological issues. While the environmental regulations of China tend to have negative impacts on pollution, fiscal decentralization was found to be a key contributor to environmental pollution in Chinese cities. Overall, the study supports the validity of the pollution refuge hypothesis in China. Lastly, the conclusions allow us to conclude that China might need micro-level reforms regarding fiscal decentralization, environmental tax laws, and encouragement of cleaner production technologies.

Sea cucumbers are dominant invertebrates in several ecosystems such as coral reefs, seagrass meadows and mangroves. As bioturbators, they have an important ecological role in making available calcium carbonate and nutrients to the rest of the community. However, due to their commercial value, they face overexploitation in the natural environment. On top of that, occurring ocean acidification could impact these organisms, considered sensitive as echinoderms are osmoconformers, high-magnesium calcite producers and have a low metabolism. As a first investigation of the impact of ocean acidification on sea cucumbers, we tested the impact of short-term (6 to 12 days) exposure to ocean acidification (seawater pH 7.7 and 7.4) on two sea cucumbers collected in SW Madagascar, Holothuria scabra, a high commercial value species living in the seagrass meadows, and H. parva, inhabiting the mangroves. The former lives in a habitat with moderate fluctuations of seawater chemistry (driven by day–night differences) while the second lives in a highly variable intertidal environment. In both species, pH of the coelomic fluid was significantly negatively affected by reduced seawater pH, with a pronounced extracellular acidosis in individuals maintained at pH 7.7 and 7.4. This acidosis was due to an increased dissolved inorganic carbon content and pCO2 of the coelomic fluid, indicating a limited diffusion of the CO2 towards the external medium. However, respiration and ammonium excretion rates were not affected. No evidence of accumulation of bicarbonate was observed to buffer the coelomic fluid pH. If this acidosis stays uncompensated for when facing long-term exposure, other processes could be affected in both species, eventually leading to impacts on their ecological role.  相似文献

A forensic approach was used to evaluate sediments from Portão Stream, including analysis of metals, carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) stable isotopes, and C:N ratios. Samples collected at various points located along the stream were tested in order to investigate a possible illegal leachate input. The studied stream is heavily impacted by sewage and industrial discharges from two cities along its course. Among the metals analyzed, chromium (Cr) was noticeably the main pollutant, showing the highest levels, above regulatory limits, downstream from some potential sources of effluents enriched with this metal. Isotope analyses revealed a general trend of depletion in the heavier isotope along the stream for C and N. The exception was one point near a hazardous waste landfill, where relatively more enriched δ13C and δ15N values were found. The isotope and metal analysis results indicated that this site was affected by a particular source, demonstrating the combination of these parameters could be used for the discrimination of sources in a heavily polluted stream. Nevertheless, further investigations are necessary to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the biogeochemical processes involved in the incorporation of leachate in sediments to use this analysis as evidence for the illegal leachate discharge.  相似文献

An investigation of the effect of relative humidity on aerosol formation from m-xylene and 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene photooxidation is reported. Experiments were performed in the presence and absence of ammonium sulfate seed particles (both aqueous and dry) to ascertain the effect of partitioning of oxidation products into a strong electrolytic solution or onto dry crystalline seed particles. In marked contrast to the α-pinene/ozone system, the final measured secondary organic aerosol yield was unaffected by the presence of gas-phase or liquid-phase water at relative humidities (RH) up to 50%. The hygroscopic nature of the aerosol generated upon photooxidation of m-xylene and 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene was examined; the hygroscopicity of the aerosol at 85% RH for both parent organics increased with the extent of the reaction, indicating that the first-generation oxidation products undergo further oxidation. Limited identification of the gas- and aerosol-phase products of m-xylene and 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene photooxidation is reported. It is evident that a more complete molecular identification of aromatic photooxidation aerosol awaits analytical techniques not yet brought to bear on this problem.  相似文献

A study was conducted in the Muttom–Mandaikadu coastal region, which is among the profitable coastal sectors in Tamil Nadu, to find the groundwater potential as well as its quality by an integrated geospatial, geophysical and geochemical approach. The GIS-based weighted overlay analysis was used to merge five thematic layers to create the groundwater potential zone map. The geophysical resistivity survey was performed in the study area at 26 stations by applying Schlumberger vertical electrical sounding technique. The observed data were inverted to develop a subsurface lithology model and its electrical properties using one-dimensional software AGI Earth Imager. The combined vertical electrical sounding result and remote sensing thematic maps have exposed the potential zone of groundwater in the study area. From the inferred results, it was observed that 20.8% of the area has ample groundwater potential and 7.7% of the area has scanty groundwater potential. The saltwater intrusion zone had been predicted by validating aquifer resistivity with Dar-Zarrouck (D-Z) parameter. From the geophysical and geochemical interpreted results, it was found that aquifers in 34.6% of the study area are vulnerable to saline contamination. The 4-D model with integrated groundwater quantity and quality suggests that the study area's Western part falls under excellent-to-good groundwater potential zone and excellent water quality.
