Sharing song types with immediate neighbors is widespread in birds with song repertoires, and sharing songs may confer a
selective advantage in some cases. Levels of song sharing vary between different geographical populations of several bird
species, and ecological differences often correlate with differences in singing behavior; in particular, males in migratory
subspecies often share fewer songs than males in resident subspecies. The song sparrow (Melospiza melodia) appears to fit this pattern: resident song sparrows in western North America generally share 20–40% of their repertoire
(of about eight songs) with each neighbor, while migratory subspecies from eastern North America often share 10% or less.
We compared song sharing in two populations within a single subspecies of song sparrow (M. m. morphna) in Washington State. These populations, separated by only 120 km, nonetheless differ in migratory tendencies and several
other ecological and life history variables. We recorded complete song repertoires from 11 male song sparrows in a high-elevation,
migrating population at Gold Creek in west-central Washington, and compared them to two samples (n = 15 and n = 36) from a coastal, resident population at Discovery Park, Seattle, Washington. Despite major differences in habitat, population
density, and migratory tendencies, song sharing among Gold Creek males was as high as that among Discovery Park males. In
both populations, sharing was highest between immediate neighbors, and declined with distance. We conclude that at the within-subspecies
level, neither migration nor population density affect song sharing in song sparrows, a song repertoire species.

Although cooperative breeding is known from only about 9 % of bird species, it has received substantial attention because individuals foregoing their own reproduction to help others represent a long-standing evolutionary puzzle. We studied group formation, breeding system, spatial distribution and several life-history traits of white-breasted mesites (Mesitornis variegata). Based on field observations across 3 years, we found that white-breasted mesites live in year-round stable pairs, and that groups are formed by juvenile philopatry. As other family-living birds, M. variegata exhibit a slow pace-of-life, characterized by high annual adult survival, low productivity, long chick dependence and extended parental care. However, although reproduction is monogamous and juveniles showed interest in their parents’ nests, we found no evidence of cooperative breeding. We suggest that slow life-histories, extended parental care and year-round territoriality predispose juvenile mesites to delay dispersal. However, adult intolerance toward older juveniles may prevent them from adopting a cooperative lifestyle. Comparisons with other species of mesite indicate that monogamy and delayed juvenile dispersal are necessary, but not sufficient for the evolution of cooperative breeding in this family of birds, and that particular ecological and social conditions have facilitated the transition from pair-living to a type of group that may represent a stepping stone in the evolution of cooperative breeding in mesites and other birds. 相似文献

The relationship of body size to mating success was studied in four populations of horseshoe crabs, Limulus polyphemus L., along the east coast of the U.S.A. in the spring and summer from 1986 to 1989. Crabs of both sexes from Great Bay, New Hampshire, were significantly smaller than crabs from three middle Atlantic coast populations: Sandy Hook Bay and Delaware Bay, New Jersey, and Chincoteague Bay, Virginia. The formation of mated pairs was independent of body size in each population; there were no significant size differences between mated and single individuals, and size assortative mating did not occur. A comparision of male clasper dimensions with the corresponding point of attachment on the female indicates that there are no morphological constraints limiting amplexus between any male and any female within a population. The ratios of male to female prosoma width within amplexed mated pairs averaged from 0.78 to 0.80 in each population, despite the large difference in absolute size between southern and nothern populations. This may suggest a role for natural selection in regulating the relative sizes of each sex. 相似文献

Genetic variation and population structure of two tropical sea anemones, Bunodosoma caissarum Correa and Actinia bermudensis McMurrich were related to their different dispersal capabilities and reproductive modes. B. caissarum reproduces sexually and has a long-lived planktotrophic larva; A. bermudensis can reproduce both sexually and asexually, supposedly with short-range dispersal. Both species were sampled along 1150 km of Brazilian coastline between 1990 and 1991 and analyzed by horizontal starch gel electrophoresis for 16 enzyme loci in B. caissarum and 19 in A. bermudensis. B. caissarum had higher levels of heterozygosity (H=0.35) and lower levels of population structuring (F
ST=0.042) than A. bermudensis (H=0.17; F
ST=0.262). At one locality large genetic differences between two sympatric colour morphs of A. bermudensis provide evidence of possible cryptic speciation. Overall levels of genetic variation and heterozygosity in the two species are compatible with their known modes of reproduction. 相似文献

Allozyme and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) genetic variation was compared in orange roughy (Hoplostethus atlanticus Collett) collected from waters off southern Australia and from waters about 22 000 km away in the North Atlantic west of Scotland. Samples were screened for 11 polymorphic allozyme loci and with 9 restriction enzymes. Significant heterogeneity between the two areas was detected for three allozyme loci (ADA
*, CK
* and GPI-1
*), and the overall G
ST
(gene-diversity statistic) value of 1% was small but significant. Significant mtDNA haplotype heterogeneity was observed after 2- of haplotype frequencies but not after a G
ST
analysis. Nucleotide sequence-diversity analysis showed very low net divergence (0.0023%) between the two samples. The Australian orange roughy had a lower allozyme heterozygosity and a lower mitochondrial DNA nucleon diversity than the North Atlantic sample. The very limited, although significant, allozyme and mitochondrial DNA heterogeneity between these areas suggests that there is some gene flow between these two populations. The species appears to be widespread, with its presence reported from the southern Pacific, southern Indian, and northern and southern Atlantic Oceans, and it is likely that gene flow between the antipodes is mediated by stepping-stone exchange between adjacent populations rather than by direct migration. 相似文献

In this study, the pattern of movement of young male and female rabbits and the genetic structures present in adult male and female populations in four habitats was examined. The level of philopatry in young animals was found to vary between 18-90% for males and 32-95% for females in different populations. It was skewed, with more males dispersing than females in some but not all populations. Analysis of allozyme data using spatial autocorrelation showed that adult females from the same social group, unlike males, were significantly related in four of the five populations studied. Changes in genetic structure and rate of dispersal were measured before and during the recovery of a population that was artificially reduced in size. There were changes in the rate and distance of dispersal with density and sex. Subadults of both sexes moved further in the first year post crash (low density) than in the following years. While the level of dispersal for females was lower than that of the males for the first 3 years, thereafter (high density) both sexes showed similar, low levels of dispersal (20%). The density at which young animals switch behaviour between dispersal and philopatry differed for males and females. The level of genetic structuring in adult females was high in the precrash population, reduced in the first year post crash and undetectable in the second year. Dispersal behaviour of rabbits both affects the genetic structure of the population and changes with conditions. Over a wide range of levels of philopatry, genetic structuring is present in the adult female , but not the male population. Consequently, though genetic structuring is present, it does not lead to inbreeding. More long-distance movements are found in low-density populations, even though vacant warrens are available near birth warrens. The distances moved decreased as density increased. Calculation of the effective population size (Ne) shows that changes in dispersal distance offset changes in density, so that Ne remains constant. 相似文献

Summary The contest behavior of larvae from a dense and a sparse population of the caddisfly Agrypnia pagetana was studied in the laboratory. Fights were generally of short duration, and most fights were won by owners in both populations. Take-over contests lasted longer than non-takeover ones, indicating that owners in general used a more persistent strategy. Ownership was more important in the sparse population than in the dense population, but contest duration did not differ between the two populations. Effect of weight asymmetry was most pronounced in the dense population, and here the larger larvae usually won. However, when the intruding larvae were much larger than the owner, a low number of take-over contests were probably related to the inferior fit (low resource value) of small cases to the intruding larvae. In both populations the frequency of case takeover contests was low when the case fit to the intruder was low. We conclude that A. pagetana larvae use fighting strategies typical for contests over resources of low value relative to contest costs. 相似文献

Seasonal changes in biochemical composition of tissues are compared in a shallow inshore and deeper offshore population of the seastarSclerasterias mollis (Hutton, 1872) on the Otago shelf, New Zealand, from 1985 to 1986. The biochemical composition of the body wall, gonads and pyloric caeca of the two populations did not differ greatly, even though reproductive output and nutrient storage of reserves were consistently higher in the offshore population. The biochemical composition of the ovaries and testes differed. High levels of carbohydrate and lipid were maintained in the ovaries from the commencement of vitellogenesis until spawning occurred. The testes had higher ash levels during spermatogenesis. During the annual reproductive cycle, an inverse relationship in the carbohydrate levels between the ovary and the pyloric caeca suggests nutrient transfer from the pyloric caeca to the gonads during gametogenesis. Annual changes in biochemical composition indicate that the body wall is also used for nutrient storage. 相似文献

The spatial scale of life-history and demographic variation was investigated in the opportunistic polychaete Ophryotrocha labronica La Greca and Bacci. Individuals were collected along the Italian coasts from three thermally different biogeographical regions
of the Mediterranean Sea. For each region, populations from four harbours were considered, and for each harbour, two sites
were examined. Life-history and demographic traits were investigated after one generation under a common garden experiment,
and their variation at the three spatial scales was assessed. All the traits showed high variability with regard to site.
A number of life-history and all demographic traits also varied according to the biogeographical region. Conversely, no differences
were found between harbours, suggesting that geographical isolation did not contribute to phenotypic variation. Results confirmed
the central role of local conditions for the evolution of life history in species colonizing heterogeneous environments, but
they also pointed to the importance of large-scale factors in shaping the phenotypic responses of O. labronica, demonstrating the need for a multi-scale approach for obtaining a good measure of natural variation in widespread opportunistic
species. 相似文献

A leaf-bag field experiment was conducted to investigate the decomposition and release of nutrients from leaves of two aquatic macrophytes (floating-leaved Trapa bispinosa and submerged Vallisneria natans) deposited in the four vertical locations (i.e. air-water interface, AW; sediment-water interface, SW; buried at a depth of 10?cm, B10; buried at a depth of 20?cm, B20) of littoral zone in Nanhu Lake, China, for 60 days from July to August 2015. Leaf initial quality significantly influenced mass loss and nutrient release except TN (total nitrogen) remaining. Compared to V. natans, T. bispinosa leaves decomposed faster under the same treatments. The decomposition was greatly affected by both leaf chemical quality and the location of deposition. With the increasing depth of vertical locations, leaf biomass loss and nutrient release of both T. bispinosa and V. natans decreased. In addition, initial N:P ratio and cellulose were the major determinants for decomposition in AW and SW treatments while total phenol in B10 and B20. Our results suggest that the combined effect of leaf chemical quality and burial could mediate macrophyte mass loss and release of nutrients and carbon, which in turn can influence organic matter accumulation and nutrient cycling in shallow freshwater lakes. 相似文献
