The specific activity of 55Fe in plankton increased from below detectable limits at 20°N to a maximum of 130 nCi/g Fe at 20°S and then decreased to 5 nCi/g Fe at 50°S. Along an east-west track near 15°S a peak of 90 nCi/g Fe occurred at 135°W. It is suggested that this maximum is the result of fallout from French nuclear tests at Mururoa Atoll (22°S; 139°W). The increase in 55Fe at high latitudes observed in previous studies in the North Atlantic Ocean and North Pacific Ocean did not occur in the South Pacific Ocean which supports the suggestion that belts of high tropospheric fallout accounted for the increase in the Northern oceans.  相似文献

Samples from a series of RMT-8 tows along 20°W in spring and autumn of various years were used to study the variability in aspects of the breeding biology of two species of Cyclothone: C. braueri and C. microdon in the eastern North Atlantic Ocean. Variables compared within each species included length-frequency distribution, maximum size, size at maturity, sex ratio, egg size and fecundity. Populations of both species at lower latitudes were generally smaller, reached maturity at a smaller size, and probably spawned earlier in the year and over a longer period than populations at higher latitudes. In both species, fecundity was highest at 40°N in the spring. The results suggested that C. microdon may not spawn at the northern extent of its range.  相似文献

The understanding of population structure and gene flow of marine pelagic species is paramount to monitoring, management and conservation studies. Such studies are often hampered by the potentially high dispersal behavior of the species, the lack of obvious geographical barriers in the marine environment and the scarce sample availability. Short-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) are widespread in coastal and open-ocean habitats of the North Atlantic Ocean, nevertheless population structure and migratory patterns are poorly understood. Furthermore, concern has been raised about the status of the species because large numbers of dolphins have been taken incidentally in several fisheries throughout the North Atlantic in the past decades. In the present study, a large number of individual samples were obtained from seasonal and spatial aggregations of common dolphins from western (wNA) and eastern North Atlantic (eNA) regions, mostly using opportunistic sampling (i.e. from incidental entanglement in fishing gear or beach-cast carcasses). Genetic variability was investigated using nuclear (14 microsatellite loci) and mitochondrial (360 bp of the control region) genetic markers. Levels of genetic diversity were relatively high in all sampled areas and no evidence of recent reduction of effective population size (i.e. bottleneck) was detected at the nuclear loci. Significant population structure was detected between the two main regions (wNA and eNA) where it appeared to be more pronounced at mitochondrial (F ST = 0.018, P < 0.001) than nuclear markers (F ST = 0.005, P < 0.05), indicating the presence of at least two genetically distinct populations of common dolphins in the North Atlantic Ocean. In contrast, no significant genetic structure was detected between temporal aggregations of dolphins from within the same region, suggesting possible seasonal movement patterns at a regional scale. The observed levels of genetic differentiation between classes of markers are discussed here as a possible consequence of migratory patterns or recent population subdivision. In order to study taxon richness, biodiversity and abundance patterns in the North Atlantic from temperate latitudes through Arctic to high Arctic latitudes, we recorded the faunas (at ELWS level) colonizing 20 cobbles from three sites at each of seven boulder-field localities (south-west England, 50°N; Wales, 51°N; west Scotland, 56°N; Iceland, 64°N; Tromsø, 70°N; Svalbard, 77°N, 79°N). Inverse correlations were found between latitude and all measures of richness (species, orders, and phyla numbers) and biodiversity (S–W, P). However, these correlations were driven mostly by the consistently impoverished Arctic sites; an even cline of decreasing diversity from south to north did not exist. Multidimensional scaling revealed two communities, temperate–subarctic species-rich and high arctic species-poor. Evenness as measured by Pielou’s index was similar across all latitudes. Abundance data exhibited a similar trend to the species richness and diversity data with a significant negative correlation with latitude, but when Arctic data were excluded the correlation vanished.  相似文献

Geographic ranges of marine intertidal organisms are not entirely governed by discontinuities in temperature gradients. This is especially true in the eastern north Pacific Ocean, where temperature gradation is less steep than in the western north Atlantic Ocean. The southern limit of distribution of Littorina sitkana (Philippi, 1845) and the northern limit of L. planaxis (Philippi, 1847) occur at Charleston, Oregon (Latitude 43.4°N). No discontinuity in air or water temperature can be correlated with these distributional boundaries. A third species, L. scutulata (Gould, 1849), has the widest range, overlapping with L. planaxis in the south and L. sitkana in the north (Latitude 27.5° to 58°N). L. planaxis transplanted to northern Washington survived for 4 years, grew and produced planktonic larvae. Either larval mortality or south-flowing currents during planktonic life prevent this species from dispersing northward. L. sitkana has direct development and occurs only in habitats where adults are sheltered from waves and egg masses from desiccation. Lack of suitable habitat, coupled with the presence of the predatory crab Pachygrapsus crassipes (Randall, 1839) prevent the southward establishment of L. sitkana.  相似文献

Correlations and cross-correlations between forest fires in the province of British Columbia, Canada, and sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean were evaluated. British Columbia has a long Pacific Ocean coastline; given that there may be teleconnections between the province's forest fires and climate variability over the ocean, significant correlations may exist between forest fires and the sea surface temperature of the Pacific Ocean. Fire occurrences and areas burned through lightning-caused and human-caused fires were analyzed against individual 1° × 1° grid cells of anomalies in the sea surface temperature to determine correlations for the period 1950-2006. Significant correlations (p < 0.05) for vast areas of the ocean were found between occurrences of lightning-caused fires and sea surface temperature anomalies for time lags of 1 and 2 years, whereas significant correlations between occurrences of human-caused fires and sea surface temperature anomalies occurred extensively for many time lags. To support the results of this approach, correlations between fire data and the Niño 3.4, Pacific Decadal Oscillation, and Arctic Oscillation indices were tested for the same period. Significant correlations were found between fire occurrences and these indices at certain time lags. Overall, fire occurrence appeared to be more extensively correlated with sea surface temperature anomalies than was area burned. These results support the hypothesis that teleconnections exist between fire activity in British Columbia and sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean, and the correlations suggest that linear regression models or other regression techniques may be appropriate for predicting fire severity from the sea surface temperatures of one or more previous years.  相似文献

Samples collected from the eastern Atlantic Ocean between 40° and 4° N with rectangular and ring nets contained male specimens of Nematoscelis atlantica, N. microps, and N. tenella (Euphausiacea) with saddle-shaped thickenings of chitin on the dorsal surface of some abdominal segments, and with enlarged photophores on the abdominal segments immediately posterior to those with thickenings. Two forms of each species are distinguished by the number and the position of chitinous thickenings and enlarged photophores. Except in a zone off W. Africa (approximately between 22° and 16° N) each form of N. atlantica and N. microps occurs as a distinct population. These populations appear to be characteristic of either the North or South Atlantic Central water, and the overlap zone corresponds approximately with the physical boundary between these water masses and with a faunal transition zone found in this region by other workers. For N. tenella it appears that only one form occurs as a separate population south of 18° N in South Atlantic Central water. Between 28° and 18° N the two forms co-exist.  相似文献

Pop-up satellite archival tags were implanted into 68 Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus Linnaeus), ranging in size from 91 to 295 kg, in the southern Gulf of Maine (n=67) and off the coast of North Carolina (n=1) between July 2002 and January 2003. Individuals tagged in the Gulf of Maine left that area in late fall and overwintered in northern shelf waters, off the coasts of Virginia and North Carolina, or in offshore waters of the northwestern Atlantic Ocean. In spring, the fish moved either northwards towards the Gulf of Maine or offshore. None of the fish crossed the 45°W management line (separating eastern and western management units) and none traveled towards the Gulf of Mexico or the Straits of Florida (known western Atlantic spawning grounds). The greatest depth recorded was 672 m and the fish experienced temperatures ranging from 3.4 to 28.7°C. Swimming depth was significantly correlated with location, season, size class, time of day, and moon phase. There was also evidence of synchronous vertical behavior and changes in depth distribution in relation to oceanographic features.Communicated by J.P. Grassle, New Brunswick  相似文献

Eleven populations of the Pan-American sandy beach isopod Excirolana braziliensis, distributed from tropical (9°N) to temperate (39°S) sandy beaches in Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, were analyzed to determine latitudinal variations in: breeding and recruitment patterns, sex ratios, size of ovigerous females and of juveniles and length–fecundity relationships. E. braziliensis exhibited strong latitudinal patterns in all reproductive traits throughout its distribution range. Breeding and recruitment shifted from continuous to seasonal from tropical to temperate beaches, having a predominance of females at higher latitudes. In agreement with the latitudinal gradient hypothesis, ovigerous females inhabiting tropical sandy beaches (low latitudes) were smaller, became sexually mature at smaller sizes and had lower individual fecundity than on temperate beaches. Juveniles were also smallest at low latitudes. Between-ocean comparisons showed very similar reproductive characteristics for roughly the same latitude. These linked reproductive parameters suggest that the intensity of breeding effort is associated with the duration of the breeding season and geographically size-related characteristics of the species. Geographic variations in the breeding and recruitment seasons, as well as in individual fecundity, size structure of mature females and sex ratios, are proposed to have major consequences in explaining local variations in population demography. Our paper also reinforces the notion that sandy beach animals are highly plastic.Communicated by O. Kinne, Oldendorf/Luhe  相似文献

Pelagic species have been traditionally thought to occupy vast, genetically interconnected, geographic ranges in an essentially homogeneous environment. Although this view has been challenged recently for some mesopelagic planktonic taxa, the population structure of hyponeustonic (surface-drifting) species remains unknown. Here, we test the hypothesis of panmixis in Glaucus atlanticus, a cosmopolitan neustonic nudibranch, by assessing the genetic differentiation of multiple representatives from a global neustonic sampling effort. Specimens were collected from all subtropical oceanic gyre systems (North Atlantic, South Atlantic, North Pacific, South Pacific, and Indian Ocean). We sequenced a fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I gene for 98 individuals and performed population structure, differentiation (analysis of molecular variance, spatial analysis of molecular variance, F ST, Jost’s D), and molecular clock analyses. Our results indicate that G. atlanticus is not globally panmictic, but that populations appear to be panmictic within ocean basins. We detected several topologically ectopic haplotypes in the Atlantic Ocean, but the molecular clock analysis indicates that these have diverged from closely related Indo-Pacific haplotypes over 1.2 MYA, coinciding with cooling in waters around in the southern tip of Africa and resulting oceanographic changes. These data and the fact that G. atlanticus is not known from polar latitudes suggest that gene flow between ocean basins is hindered by physical barriers (supercontinents) and water temperatures in the Arctic and Southern Oceans.  相似文献

Ingestion of marine debris can have lethal and sublethal effects on sea turtles and other wildlife. Although researchers have reported on ingestion of anthropogenic debris by marine turtles and implied incidences of debris ingestion have increased over time, there has not been a global synthesis of the phenomenon since 1985. Thus, we analyzed 37 studies published from 1985 to 2012 that report on data collected from before 1900 through 2011. Specifically, we investigated whether ingestion prevalence has changed over time, what types of debris are most commonly ingested, the geographic distribution of debris ingestion by marine turtles relative to global debris distribution, and which species and life‐history stages are most likely to ingest debris. The probability of green (Chelonia mydas) and leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) ingesting debris increased significantly over time, and plastic was the most commonly ingested debris. Turtles in nearly all regions studied ingest debris, but the probability of ingestion was not related to modeled debris densities. Furthermore, smaller, oceanic‐stage turtles were more likely to ingest debris than coastal foragers, whereas carnivorous species were less likely to ingest debris than herbivores or gelatinovores. Our results indicate oceanic leatherback turtles and green turtles are at the greatest risk of both lethal and sublethal effects from ingested marine debris. To reduce this risk, anthropogenic debris must be managed at a global level. Análisis Global de la Ingesta de Residuos Antropogénicos por Tortugas Marinas  相似文献

We present data spanning approximately 100 years regarding the spatial and temporal occurrence of marine turtle sightings and strandings in the northeast Atlantic from two public recording schemes and demonstrate potential signals of changing population status. Records of loggerhead (n = 317) and Kemp’s ridley (n = 44) turtles occurring on the European continental shelf were most prevalent during the autumn and winter, when waters were coolest. In contrast, endothermic leatherback turtles (n = 1,668) were most common during the summer. Analysis of the spatial distribution of hard-shell marine turtle sightings and strandings highlights a pattern of decreasing records with increasing latitude. The spatial distribution of sighting and stranding records indicates that arrival in waters of the European continental shelf is most likely driven by North Atlantic current systems. Future patterns of spatial-temporal distribution, gathered from the periphery of juvenile marine turtles habitat range, may allow for a broader assessment of the future impacts of global climate change on species range and population size.  相似文献

Relatively few insects have invaded the marine environment, and only five species of sea skaters, Halobates Eschscholtz (Hemiptera: Gerridae), have successfully colonized the surface of the open ocean. All five species occur in the Pacific Ocean, H. germanus White also occurs in the Indian Ocean, whereas H. micans Esch- scholtz is the only species found in the Atlantic Ocean. We sequenced a 780 bp long region of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I gene (COI) for a total of 66 specimens of the five oceanic Halobates species. Our purpose was to investigate the genetic variation within species and estimate the amount of gene flow between populations. We defined 27 haplotypes for H. micans and found that haplotype lineages from each of the major oceans occupied by this species are significantly different, having sequences containing five to seven unique base substitutions. We conclude that gene flow between populations of H. micans inhabiting the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Ocean is limited and hypothesize that these populations have been separated for 1 to 3 million years. Similarly, there may be limited gene flow between H. germanus populations found in the Pacific and Indian Ocean and between H. sericeus populations inhabiting the northern and southern parts of the Pacific Ocean. Finally, we discuss our findings in relation to recent hypotheses about the influence of oceanic diffusion on the distribution and population structure of oceanic Halobates spp. Received: 29 July 1999 / Accepted: 23 November 1999  相似文献

Transport of the radioactive tracer Iodine-129 (129I, T 1/2 = 15.7 Myr) in the northern North Atlantic Ocean has been investigated using a global isopycnic Ocean General Circulation Model (OGCM) and observed data. 129I originates mainly from the nuclear fuel reprocessing plants in Sellafield (UK) and La Hague (France), and is transported northwards along the Norwegian coast, and then into surface and intermediate layers in the Arctic Ocean through the Barents Sea and the Fram Strait, but also partly recirculating south along the eastern coast of Greenland. In the North Atlantic Subpolar Seas, 129I is mainly found in dense overflow waters from the Nordic Seas being exported southwards in the Deep Western Boundary Current, and to a lesser extent in surface and intermediate layers circulating cyclonically within the Subpolar Gyre. Observed concentration of 129I along a surface transect in the eastern Nordic Seas in 2001 is captured by the OGCM, while in the Nansen Basin of the Arctic Ocean the OGCM overestimates the observed values by a factor of two. The vertical profile of 129I in the Labrador Sea, repeatedly observed since 1997 to present, is fairly realistically reproduced by the OGCM. This indicates that the applied model system has potential for predicting the magnitude and depth of overflow waters from the Nordic Seas into the North Atlantic Subpolar Seas. To supplement the information obtained from the 129I distribution, we have conducted a number of idealized tracer experiments with the OGCM, including tracers mimicking pure water masses, and instantaneous pulse releases. New insight into time-scales of tracer transport in this region is obtained by utilizing a few recently developed methods based on the theory of Transit Time Distribution (TTD) and age of tracers. Implications for other types of “anomalies” in the northern North Atlantic Ocean, being anomalous hydrography or chemical tracers, and how they are interpreted, are discussed.  相似文献

Patterns in diversity, species replacement and species composition of gammaridean amphipods (Crustacea: Malacostraca) were studied in two areas on different sides of the Greenland–Iceland–Faeroe Ridge. One was sited south of the Ridge in the North Atlantic Ocean off southern Iceland and the other north of the Ridge in the Arctic Ocean (subarctic and arctic waters of the Iceland Sea) off northern Iceland. Samples were taken with a Rothlisberg–Pearcy epibenthic sled within the depth range of about 50 to 1200 m at a total of 28 stations. In all 21 150 individuals were found belonging to 156 species. Of these 102 were found in the northern area with 64 of the species restricted to this area. In all 94 species were found in the southern area with 52 of the species restricted to this area. This suggests a similar regional diversity, but a different faunal composition. The amphipods showed similar species replacement patterns with depth on both sides of the Ridge, while the diversity patterns differed between the areas. In the North Atlantic the number of species increased with depth, while in the Arctic there seemed to be no pattern at all. It is suggested that diversity patterns of amphipods on each side of the Ridge are shaped by different factors, and these may not be the same as those determining diversity patterns of other groups in the area. Salinity (as indicative of water masses) was found to be the most important environmental variable in explaining the species composition when both areas were considered, suggesting a number of contributing factors (adaptation to water masses, dispersal, etc.). Water temperature was the most important variable in explaining the variance in the species composition in the northern area, while depth was the most important variable in explaining the variance in the species composition of the southern area. The plasma nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA) of five species of temperate zone marine teleost fishes (Northwestern Atlantic), one Arctic marine teleost (Eastern Canadian Arctic), and four species of marine elasmobranchs (Northwestern Atlantic) are reported. Four fatty acids, 16:0, 18:1n9, 20:5n3 and 22:6n3, comprised 70 to 83% of total NEFA in the plasma of all temperate teleost species examined. With the sole exception of 18:1, these differed from the predominant fatty acids, 14:1, 16:1, 18:1 and 20:5n3, in the Arctic species. The predominant fatty acids in elasmobranch NEFA were 16:0, 22:6n3 and 18:1n9 in all species but saturated fatty acids (14:0, 16:0 and 18:0) accounted for 40% of all NEFA in all elasmobranchs examined. Monoenes represented a greater, and polyenes a smaller, percentage of the fatty acids in the Arctic sculpin compared to the temperate sculpin. Fatty acids of the n3 series were lower in the plasma of the Arctic sculpin compared to the temperate sculpin. Comparisons with published values for freshwater fish using the same method indicate the n3:n6 ratio is higher in the marine teleost fishes. Ratios of n3:n6 fatty acids ranged from 1.80 to 7.94 for the elasmobranchs and were on average lower than those for the marine teleosts. Total levels of NEFA for the elasmobranchs were between 193 and 399 nmol ml-1, lower than the values reported here for teleosts but within the range reported by others for some teleost fishes.  相似文献

Fruiting bodies of higher marine fungi occur within and on tests of foraminiferans on tropical beaches of the Pacific (Australia, Hawaii) and Atlantic Ocean (Belize, Mexico). Ascocarps (fruiting bodies ) of five intertidal species or varieties of the genera Arenariomyces, Corollospora and Lindra colonize foraminiferans in the natural habitat and may contribute to the eventual breakup of the tests. Fungal fruiting structures, which are normally subglobose when developing in other substrates, adjust to the shape of the foraminiferan chambers when growing within the tests. Pure cultures of L. thalassiae var. crassa yielded the same type of irregular fruiting bodies when grown at 30° C on foraminiferan tests as the sole source of nutrients.Smithsonian Contribution No. 174 (Investigations of Marine Shallow-Water Ecosystems Program, Reef and Mangrove Study-Belize)  相似文献

Concentrations of the weapon-test, fallout radionuclide iron-55 have been reported for migratory species, such as the Pacific salmon, which suggest a marked decrease in concentration with decrease in latitude of the point of capture. This situation has been examined for North Atlantic cod stocks in order to provide data for a species representative of a large geographical area, but divided into more or less distinct stocks each with a restricted territory, in order to provide further data on the importance of latitude in determining iron-55 concentrations. The data obtained show that there is a marked dependence upon latitude, Arctic cod averaging 90 pCi 55Fe/mg Fe compared with 15 pCi 55Fe/mg Fe for cod from middle latitudes. The mechanisms that could lead to such distribution are examined, and it is concluded that deposition of this radionuclide was exceptionally high over the sea in northern latitudes compared with its deposition on land, and that this pattern of deposition, taken together with the very high biological availability of the material at the time of deposition, has led to the very high specific activities found in northern latitudes and recorded for Arctic cod stocks in particular.  相似文献

Relationships between the types of larval development in 4 species of Littorina from British shores and their inhabitancy of different tidal levels were established by Woodward (1909). His data have led to the view that the Littorinidae present a “text-book” example illustrating obligate interrelationships between the distribution of marine bottom invertebrates in certain biotopes and the possession by them of definite types of larval development. Analysis of data describing larval development of 39 species of littorinids from various regions of the World Ocean covering all its climatic zones, from the tropics to the Arctic, accumulated in the literature (Tables 1-5) demonstrates, however, that there exists only a relationship between viviparity and the inhabitancy of supralittoral zones, and between direct development and the inhabitancy of littoral zones. In 34 out of 39 littorinid species studied pelagic development, in various modifications, is present at all tidal levels; it is most common in the supralittoral zone, but not in the sublittoral zone, as has been generally assumed. The data presented in Tables 1-5 confirm the author's opinion (Mileikovsky, 1971, 1973) that the concept of obligate interrelationships between definite types of larvel development in marine benthic invertebrate and their existence in definite biotopes, based on Woodward's scheme, is false and must be rejected.  相似文献

While communities are shaped by both local interactions and enrichment from the regional species pool, we propose a hypothesis that the balance of these forces shifts with latitude, with regional enrichment dominating at high latitudes and local interactions dominating at low latitudes. To test this hypothesis, we conducted a latitudinal-scale experiment with marine epifaunal communities. In four regions of the North Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea, we used mimics of ecosystem engineers to manipulate biogenic structural complexity. We iteratively evaluated diversity patterns of experimental communities up to one year after deployment. Additional data were also collected from one of our tropical sites 2.5 years after initial deployment. As hypothesized, we found a reciprocal latitudinal gradient in the effects of the structurally complex mimics and regional enrichment. In the tropics, local diversity was always higher in association with the mimics than in exposed areas that were more open to predation. This effect was consistent across two spatial scales and beyond the one-year timescale of the experiment. In temperate communities, no consistent effects of the mimics on diversity were observed. However, the proportion of species from the regional species pool that were present at the local scale increased from the tropics to the temperate zone, consistent with the hypothesis that higher-latitude communities may experience greater influence from the regional species pool than communities at low latitudes. This study represents the first large-scale experimental demonstration that suggests that the relative impact of local interactions and regional enrichment on community diversity may depend on latitude.  相似文献
