Wastewater treatment sludge contains valuable nutrients, yet represents a residue problem due to the amount of heavy metals,
which is one of the factors preventing the use of sludge as fertilizer. In Sweden, the government has a declared aim of closing
the ecocycles of nutrients to arable land, while at the same time the existing limit values are among the lowest in the world.
This paper focuses on the opportunities for Swedish wastewater utilities (WWUs) to manage and reduce sources of heavy metals
in order to get sludge approved and recycled.
A case study focusing on sources of the heavy metals Cd, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn and the WWUs ability to influence the source
by means of existing regulations was traced and categorized. A substantial fraction of the heavy metals were shown to be caused
by diffuse emissions, such as the use of goods and products in society. For most sources discussed in the paper, a WWU can
only manage the sources to a limited extent, if at all.
This study shows that the WWUs cannot manage both recycling of nutrients and a decrease in heavy metals ending up in sludge.
Diffuse emissions of heavy metals must be examined in context, not as a separate phenomenon or an issue for a single actor.
The existing environmental legislation does not handle diffuse sources, yet long-term strategies for reducing the emissions
to wastewater treatment must involve the reduction of diffuse emissions. 相似文献

A procedure for incorporating spatial variability in ecological risk assessment of Dutch river floodplains 总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9
Floodplain soils along the river Rhine in the Netherlands show a large spatial variability in pollutant concentrations. For
an accurate ecological risk characterization of the river floodplains, this heterogeneity has to be included into the ecological
risk assessment. In this paper a procedure is presented that incorporates spatial components of exposure into the risk assessment
by linking geographical information systems (GIS) with models that estimate exposure for the most sensitive species of a floodplain.
The procedure uses readily available site-specific data and is applicable to a wide range of locations and floodplain management
scenarios. The procedure is applied to estimate exposure risks to metals for a typical foodweb in the Afferdensche and Deestsche
Waarden floodplain along the river Waal, the main branch of the Rhine in the Netherlands. Spatial variability of pollutants
is quantified by overlaying appropriate topographic and soil maps resulting in the definition of homogeneous pollution units.
Next to that, GIS is used to include foraging behavior of the exposed terrestrial organisms. Risk estimates from a probabilistic
exposure model were used to construct site-specific risk maps for the floodplain. Based on these maps, recommendations for
future management of the floodplain can be made that aim at both ecological rehabilitation and an optimal flood defense. 相似文献

Diversity of Soil Nematodes in Areas Polluted with Heavy Metals and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Lanzhou,China 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This study investigated the soil nematode community structure along the Yellow River in the Lanzhou area of China, and analyzed
the impact of heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Cr, Cu, and Zn) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) on the nematode community.
Soil samples from five locations (named A–E), which were chosen for soil analysis, showed significant differences in their
heavy metal content (p < 0.01), as well as in the variety of nematodes (up to 41 genera) and families (up to 20) that were present. The different
samples also differed significantly in the total PAH content (p < 0.05), as well as the six types of PAH present. Sites A–C showed the most severe contamination with heavy metals and PAHs;
these sites had the lowest abundance of fungivores and omnivore/predators, but the proportion of bacteriovores was the highest
(p < 0.05). Site E, in contrast, showed only minor pollution with heavy metals and PAHs, and it contained the highest abundance
of plant parasites (p < 0.05). Several nematode ecological indicators were found to correlate with concentration of soil pollutants at all the
sites tested: the maturity index (MI, in addition to plant parasites), plant parasite index (PPI), ΣMI (including all the
soil nematodes), Shannon-Wiener diversity index (H′′), and Wasilewska index (WI). Disturbance to the soil environment was more severe when MI, ΣMI, and H′ values were lower. The results of the study show that the abundance and structure of the soil nematode communities in the
sampling locations were strongly influenced by levels of heavy metals and PAHs in the soil. They also show that the diversity
index H′ and the maturity index can be valuable tools for assessing the impact of pollutants on nematodes. 相似文献

Recent interest in expanding offshore oil production within waters of the United States has been met with opposition by groups
concerned with recreational, environmental, and aesthetic values associated with the coastal zone. Although the proposition
of new oil platforms off the coast has generated conflict over how coastal resources should be utilized, little research has
been conducted on where these user conflicts might be most intense and which sites might be most suitable for locating oil
production facilities in light of the multiple, and often times, competing interests. In this article, we develop a multiple-criteria
spatial decision support tool that identifies the potential degree of conflict associated with oil and gas production activities
for existing lease tracts in the coastal margin of Texas. We use geographic information systems to measure and map a range
of potentially competing representative values impacted by establishing energy extraction infrastructure and then spatially
identify which leased tracts are the least contentious sites for oil and gas production in Texas state waters. Visual and
statistical results indicate that oil and gas lease blocks within the study area vary in their potential to generate conflict

通过对湘江株洲段6个监测断面左右两岸共32个底泥样品重金属Pb,Zn,Cd,As,Hg和Cr质量比进行分析研究,并进行潜在生态风险评价。结果表明:霞湾断面是重金属富集最严重的断面;Cd,Hg和As的含量均超过GB15618—1995三级标准和长沙-湘潭-株洲3市土壤背景值;重金属含量大部分分布特征为右岸高于左岸;从重金属污染的潜在生态风险看,湘江株洲段各监测断面潜在生态风险都很高;各重金属元素对生态风险影响程度从大到小的顺序为:Hg〉Cd〉As〉Pb〉Zn〉Cr。 相似文献

A Framework for Net Environmental Benefit Analysis for Remediation or Restoration of Contaminated Sites 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Net environmental benefits are gains in value of environmental services or other ecological properties attained by remediation or ecological restoration minus the value of adverse environmental effects caused by those actions. Net environmental benefit analysis (NEBA) is a methodology for comparing and ranking net environmental benefits associated with multiple management alternatives. A NEBA for chemically contaminated sites typically involves comparison of several management alternatives: (1) leaving contamination in place; (2) physically, chemically, or biologically remediating the site through traditional means; (3) improving ecological value through onsite and offsite restoration alternatives that do not directly focus on removal of chemical contamination; or (4) a combination of those alternatives. NEBA involves activities that are common to remedial alternatives analysis for state regulations and the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act, post-closure and corrective action permits under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, evaluation of generic types of response actions pertinent to the Oil Pollution Act, and land management actions that are negotiated with regulatory agencies in flexible regulatory environments (i.e., valuing environmental services or other ecological properties, assessing adverse impacts, and evaluating remediation or restoration options). This article presents a high-level framework for NEBA at contaminated sites with subframeworks for natural attenuation (the contaminated reference state), remediation, and ecological restoration alternatives. Primary information gaps related to NEBA include nonmonetary valuation methods, exposure–response models for all stressors, the temporal dynamics of ecological recovery, and optimal strategies for ecological restoration.Published online 相似文献

/ This paper reports the experience of extracting information on the salinity of soil and offers a method of synthetic analysis. The experimental areas for analysis are located in Yanggao Basin, Shanxi Province, China. The types of soil are mainly meadow soil and salinized meadow soil. The method of synthetic analysis of salinity uses a geographic information system (GIS) as a tool, building a basic saltwater analysis model of saline soil and adjusting the result with expert experience after computer processing. The method of feature extraction has been used for remotely sensed data. An optimum combination of features has been determined and, after comparing several combinations in the Yanggao region, an improved result has been obtained after Kauth-Thomas (K-T) transformation. For precise quantitative analysis of the salinization, not only Thematic Mapper (TM) remote sensing data, but also two forms of non-remote-sensing data are needed: depth of groundwater and mineralization rate of groundwater according to the theory of genesis of soil. For the analysis of synthetic compounded multisources, a generalized Bayes classification is used after overlay, matching, and related coefficients have been determined. On the premise that various information sources are independent, global membership functions with probability are used to combine various pieces of information in order to apply them directly to the pixels and classifications of soil salinity. The experiment indicates that this analytical method is sound because of the increased speed of processing and its simplicity and improved precision of classification of salinity. Finally, it is necessary to examine and adjust the factors using expert intelligence. The experiment shows that synthetic analysis using the geographic information system can raise the precision of quantitative analysis of salinity, which has advantages for environmental monitoring and management.KEY WORDS: Salinity; Remote sensing; Thematic Mapper; Geographic information system; Classification 相似文献

Aerial photography has been routinely used for several decades by natural resource scientists and managers to map and monitor the condition of forested landscapes. Recently, along with the emergence of concepts in managing forests as ecosystems, has come a significant shift in emphasis from smaller to larger spatial scales and the widespread use of geographic information systems. These developments have precipitated an increasing need for vegetation information derived from other remote sensing imagery, especially digital data acquired from high-elevation aircraft and satellite platforms. This paper introduces fundamental concepts in digital remote sensing and describes numerous applications of the technology. Nine similarity indices based on phytoplankton community structure were examined for their sensitivity to assess different
levels of eutrophication. Two phytoplankton data sets, one from an open coastal system and one from a semi-enclosed gulf,
associated with different nutrient dynamics and circulation patterns were used for evaluating the indices. The results have
shown that similarity indices, measuring interspecific association and resemblance of phytoplankton communities between enriched
areas and control sites, were effective for detecting spatial and temporal dissimilarities in coastal marine ecosystems. The
structure of the oligotrophic habitat as a potential source of ambiguity for the results was discussed, whereas the validity
ranges and the potential applicability of this method were deemed to be dependent on the size of the fraction of the common
species among the samples, and the similarity of the classification patterns resulted from this subcategory and those extracted
from the overall community data. Furthermore, the study provides a new technique based on the use of the “Box and Whisker
Plot” designed to distinguish opportunistic and rare phytoplanktonic species. The similarity indices, applied solely to the
dominant species abundance, were more sensitive to resolve eutrophic, mesotrophic and oligotrophic conditions. This procedure
can be proposed as an effective methodology for water characterization and can also be used as a qualitative tracer for detecting

Some countries, including Taiwan, have adopted strategic environmental assessment (SEA) to assess and modify proposed policies,
plans, and programs (PPPs) in the planning phase for pursuing sustainable development. However, there were only some sketchy
steps focusing on policy assessment in the system of Taiwan. This study aims to develop a methodology for SEA in Taiwan to
enhance the effectiveness associated with PPPs. The proposed methodology comprises an SEA procedure involving PPP management
and assessment in various phases, a sustainable assessment framework, and an SEA management system. The SEA procedure is devised
based on the theoretical considerations by systems thinking and the regulative requirements in Taiwan. The positive and negative
impacts on ecology, society, and economy are simultaneously considered in the planning (including policy generation and evaluation),
implementation, and control phases of the procedure. This study used the analytic hierarchy process, Delphi technique, and
systems analysis to develop a sustainable assessment framework. An SEA management system was built based on geographic information
system software to process spatial, attribute, and satellite image data during the assessment procedure. The proposed methodology
was applied in the SEA of golf course installation policy in 2001 as a case study, which was the first SEA in Taiwan. Most
of the 82 existing golf courses in 2001 were installed on slope lands and caused a serious ecological impact. Assessment results
indicated that 15 future golf courses installed on marginal lands (including buffer zones, remedied lands, and wastelands)
were acceptable because the comprehensive environmental (ecological, social, and economic) assessment value was better based
on environmental characteristics and management regulations of Taiwan. The SEA procedure in the planning phase for this policy
was completed but the implementation phase of this policy was not begun because the related legislation procedure could not
be arranged due to a few senators’ resistance. A self-review of the control phase was carried out in 2006 using this methodology.
Installation permits for 12 courses on slope lands were terminated after 2001 and then 27 future courses could be installed
on marginal lands. The assessment value of this policy using the data on ecological, social, and economic conditions from
2006 was higher than that using the data from 2001. The analytical results illustrate that the proposed methodology can be
used to effectively and efficiently assist the related authorities for SEA. 相似文献

The impact of the management of packaging waste on the environment, economic growth and job creation is analyzed in this paper. This integrated assessment intends to cover a gap in the literature for this type of studies, using the specific case study of the Portuguese packaging waste management system (SIGRE).The net environmental benefits associated with the management of packaging waste, are calculated using the Life Cycle Assessment methodology. The results show that, for the categories studied, the impacts associated to SIGRE's various activities are surpassed by the benefits associated to material and energy recovery, with special focus on recycling. For example, in 2011 SIGRE avoided the emission of 116 kt CO2 equiv. – the equivalent carbon emission of the electricity consumption of 124.000 households in Portugal.The economic impact of SIGRE is evaluated through Input–Output Analysis. It was found that SIGRE's activities also have a significant economic impact. For example, their added value are ranked amongst the upper third of the economic activities with highest multiplier effect at national level: this means that for each Euro of value added generated within SIGRE, 1.25 additional € are added to the rest of the economy (multiplier effect of 2.25).Regarding the social impacts of SIGRE, the number of direct jobs associated with the system is estimated to be more than two thousand and three hundred workers. Out of these, 83% are connected to the management of municipal waste packaging (selective collection and sorting), 15% are connected to the management of non-municipal packaging waste and only 2% are connected to the Sociedade Ponto Verde (SPV, green dot society in English) – the management entity responsible for SIGRE.In general terms, the results obtained provide quantitative support to the EEA (2011) suggestion that moving up the waste hierarchy – from landfilling to recycling – creates jobs and boosts the economy. 相似文献
