Summary D-Pulegone, a monoterpene present in pennyroyålMentha sp. is repellent to a number of vertebrates, decreasing consumption of feed and granular particles. In the present study, several tests were used to determine the reliability of this substance as a feeding deterrent. D-Pulegone (10mM—1M) applied as a coating to apple pieces significantly (P < 0.001) decreased ingestion by deer mice,Peromyscus maniculatus, and prairie voles,Microtus ochrogaster. The deterrent effect of d-pulegone was not diminished following multiple exposures suggesting that this compound may be a promising candidate for use a a general vertebrate repellent. The inhibitory effect of 1M d-pulegone on apple ingestion in voles was abolished when contact was prevented by encasing the stimulus solution in plastic mesh capsules. We conclude that while d-pulegone has repellent properties following direct contact, volatile exposure alone may not be sufficient to elicit avoidance behavior. 相似文献

In this study, we analysed pellets from long-eared owls (Asio otus) collected from four localities in Belgrade (Serbia). The pellets contained the remains of prey, namely voles (Arvicola terrestris) and field mice (Apodemus agrarius). The concentrations of 14 elements (Ca, P, Mg, Na, K, Fe, Zn, Sr, Ba, Mn, Ti, Cu, Si, B) were evaluated in whole pellets and in samples containing only bone tissue, which were dissected from the whole pellet. The increased levels of certain elements, including Mn, Zn, Ba, Cu and radioactive 40K, indicate contamination of the soil by various sources, such as industrial plants and agricultural practices. From the results presented in this article, we suggest that the analysis of owl pellets may indicate the quality of the local environment. 相似文献

trunculus is one of the most widespread Mediterranean species of muricid gastropod and lives on rocky, sandy-mud and mud substrata.
Although common in the Adriatic Sea, relatively little is known about its ecology especially feeding behaviour. The aim of
this study was to explore the aspects of the feeding behaviour of H. trunculus using Arca noae, Modiolus barbatus and Mytilus galloprovincialis as experimental prey. Prey species preference, predator size, prey size choice, feeding rates, handling times and mode and
place of attack were analysed. Typically, only M. galloprovincialis was attacked: A. noae rarely at the byssal gape and M. barbatus never. Small (40 mm) H. trunculus could not easily attack large M. galloprovincialis (65 mm) and preferred small (20 mm) and medium (35 mm) sized prey. Conversely, medium (55 mm) and large (70 mm) H. trunculus fed randomly on M. galloprovincialis of all three sizes. The feeding strategy adopted by H. trunculus individuals varied with respect to size. A tendency to drill the prey shell was recorded for small predators, whereas marginal
chipping was adopted more frequently by large individuals. On average small, medium and large H. trunculus consumed 2.4±1.6 (range 0–4), 1.2±1.6 (range 0–4) and 2.0±2.1 (range 0–6) M. galloprovincialis, respectively. There was a statistically significant difference in prey-handling time with respect to the method of access
adopted, predator and prey sizes. The time required to access a M. galloprovincialis individual by marginal chipping was considerably less than that required for drilling. H. trunculus consumed an average of 0.60±0.80 g M. galloprovincialis tissue dry weight over a 5-week period, that is, ~40% of its own tissue body weight. This translates to an average-sized
(55 mm shell height) H. trunculus consuming ~18 M. galloprovincialis of 50 mm shell length (minimum marketable size) per year. H. trunculus showed no preference to drill either the left or right valves of M. galloprovincialis but generally attacked the posterior shell margin. 相似文献

Male capacity as related to sperm production, pregnancy initiation, and sperm competition in deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Summary Limitations on male capacity may be important to the evolution of mating strategies and behavior. Sperm counts in successive ejaculates of deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) decreased progressively through six ejaculations and remained depressed the following day. Males were as effective in inseminating females in cycling estrus with their second two ejaculates as with their first two and as effective in inseminating postpartum females with their fifth as with their first. In sperm competition situations males competed with rested males as effectively with their fourth, fifth, and sixth ejaculates as with their first. Thus, although sperm counts decrease in successive ejaculates, males suffer no apparent functional deficiency as long as they continue ejaculating. It is not clear whether or not deer mice are honest salesmen but they appear to be honest ejaculators and usually are honest intromitters. 相似文献

The outcome of predator-prey interactions depends on the characteristics of predators and prey as well as the structure of the environment. In a replicated field enclosure experiment, we tested the effects of quantity and quality of different prey refuges (no structure, structure forming a partial refuge, and structure forming a complete refuge) on the interaction between piscivorous perch (Perca fluviatilis) and juvenile perch and roach (Rutilus rutilus). We quantified the behaviour of the predators and the prey and predator-induced prey mortality. The piscivores stayed in or close to the prey refuge and were more dispersed in the presence than in the absence of prey refuges. Survival of juvenile perch and roach decreased in the presence of predators and was higher for juvenile roach than for juvenile perch. In addition, juvenile perch survival increased with refuge efficiency Roach formed schools which were denser in the presence of predators, had a higher swimming speed (both in the open water and in the refuge) and used a larger area than juvenile perch. Both prey species decreased their distance to the prey refuge and increased the proportion of their time spent in the refuge in the presence of predators. The number of switches between the open-water habitat and the prey refuge was higher for juvenile roach than for juvenile perch. Juvenile perch used different parts of the prey refuge in a flexible way depending both on presence of predators and refuge type whereas juvenile roach used the different parts of the prey refuge in fixed proportions over all refuge treatments. Our results suggest that juvenile roach had a overall higher capacity to avoid predation than juvenile perch. However, in the presence of qualitatively different prey refuges juvenile perch responded to predators with more flexible refuge use than juvenile roach. The differences in antipredator capacities of juvenile perch and roach when subjected to piscivorous perch predation may depend on differences in life history patterns of the two species. 相似文献

Summary After having erected artificial perches of different heights in a clear-cut, I studied the effect of perching height on the allocation of search and pursuit effort of 9 individuals of the hawk owl. Hawk owls are diurnal and locate their small mammal prey visually. Horizontal attack and move distances increased with perching height in most individual cases, as well as across cases. Prey detection and giving-up times increased with perching height in half of the individual cases, but not across cases. Attack and move distances increased with perching time in only a few individual cases, and not across cases. Perching height explained more of the variation in attack and move distances than did perching time. Move distance depended on both preceding and subsequent perching heights. When giving up a perch the owls on average moved slightly farther than the distance predicted if travel distance as well as overlap between successive search areas are to be minimized. When the ground was snow-free, distances of successful attacks tended to be shorter than those of unsuccessful attacks. Moreover, perches from which prey were captured, but not perches from which unsuccessful attacks were launched, tended to be lower than perches which were given up. This may suggest that the predator-prey distance is more critical to the probability of capture than to the probability of detection. Longer horizontal attack distances from higher perches suggest that the size of the area effectively searched around each perch increases with the height of the perch. Therefore, longer giving-up times on higher perches indicate allocation of more search time to larger search areas, and longer moves after giving up or before landing on higher perches indicate avoidance of overlap with the larger search areas of these perches. These adjustments of giving-up time and move distance allow hawk owls to forage efficiently. 相似文献

Adult females of the large carnivorous copepod Euchaeta elongata Esterly were collected from 1977 to 1980 in Port Susan, Washington, USA. Predation rates of the adult females increased with increasing prey abundance when fed the following 4 sizes of copepods: adult females of Calanus pacificus (average prosome length [PL] of 2 650 μm), adults of Aetideus divergens (PL of 1 560 μm), adult females of Pseudocalanus spp. (PL of 1 060 μm), and nauplii of C. pacificus (PL of 410 μm). Saturation feeding levels were reached when adult females of the predator were fed the small adult copepod, Pseudocalanus spp. Maximum biomass ingested of this small copepod was more than the maximum amount ingested of the larger copepods. Predation rates of the predatory copepodids at Stages IV and V also increased with increasing concentration of the 1 060 μm (PL) prey. High feeding rates exhibited by both adults and copepodids at Stage V of the predator indicate their importance as sources of mortality on populations of small copepods. Ingestion efficiency E i (prey wholly consumed [prey attacked]-1) varied as follows: adults of E. elongata were more efficient than copepodids of E. elongata; adults were more efficient than copepodids when ingesting smaller prey; starved adults were more efficient than fed ones; and both adults and copepodids were more efficient at low food concentrations. For adults of E. elongata, there were no marked seasonal variations in predation or respiratory rates that would represent acclimatory responses; however, small adults obtained during winter were more efficient at ingesting prey than were the larger adults gathered in summer. This seasonal variation in the efficiency of ingestion may be a useful indicator of physiological state: high E i values could indicate that predators are starving in winter, and low E i values could indicate that predators are satiated in summer. 相似文献

Antarctic fur seals Arctocephalus gazella and macaroni penguins Eudyptes chrysolophus are the two main land-based krill Euphausia superba consumers in the northern Scotia Sea. Using a combination of concurrent at-sea (predator observations, net hauls and multi-frequency
acoustics), and land-based (animal tracking and diet analysis) techniques, we examined variability in the foraging ecology
of these sympatric top predators during the austral summer and autumn of 2004. Krill availability derived from acoustic surveys
was low during summer, increasing in autumn. During the breeding season, krill occurred in 80% of fur seal diet samples, with
fish remains in 37% of samples. Penguin diets contained the highest proportion of fish in over 20 years of routine monitoring
(46% by mass; particularly the myctophid Electrona antarctica), with krill (33%) and amphipods (Themisto gaudichaudii; 21%) also occurring. When constrained by the need to return and feed their offspring both predator species foraged to the
northwest of South Georgia, consistent with an area of high macrozooplankton biomass, but fur seals were apparently more successful
at exploiting krill. When unconstrained by chick-rearing (during March) penguins foraged close to the Shag Rocks shelf-break,
probably exploiting the high daytime biomass of fish in this area. Penguins and seals are able to respond differently to periods
of reduced krill abundance (in terms of variability in diet and foraging behaviour), without detriment to the breeding success
of either species. This highlights the importance of myctophid fish as an alternative trophic pathway for land-based predators
in the Scotia Sea ecosystem. 相似文献

The influence of intraguild predation on prey suppression and prey release: a meta-analysis 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Intraguild predation (IGP) occurs when one predator species consumes another predator species with whom it also competes for shared prey. One question of interest to ecologists is whether multiple predator species suppress prey populations more than a single predator species, and whether this result varies with the presence of IGP. We conducted a meta-analysis to examine this question, and others, regarding the effects of IGP on prey suppression. When predators can potentially consume one another (mutual IGP), prey suppression is greater in the presence of one predator species than in the presence of multiple predator species; however, this result was not found for assemblages with unidirectional or no IGP. With unidirectional IGP, intermediate predators were generally more effective than the top predator at suppressing the shared prey, in agreement with IGP theory. Adding a top predator to an assemblage generally caused prey to be released from predation, while adding an intermediate predator caused prey populations to be suppressed. However, the effects of adding a top or intermediate predator depended on the effectiveness of these predators when they were alone. Effects of IGP varied across different ecosystems (e.g., lentic, lotic, marine, terrestrial invertebrate, and terrestrial vertebrate), with the strongest patterns being driven by terrestrial invertebrates. Finally, although IGP theory is based on equilibrium conditions, data from short-term experiments can inform us about systems that are dominated by transient dynamics. Moreover, short-term experiments may be connected in some way to equilibrium models if the predator and prey densities used in experiments approximate the equilibrium densities in nature. 相似文献

The grand skink, Oligosoma grande, is a diurnal rock-dwelling lizard from the tussock grasslands of Central Otago, New Zealand, whose diet includes a variety
of arthropods and fruit. We conducted a field experiment to examine the influence of prey distribution on foraging behavior
and spacing patterns. On sites where prey distribution was unaltered (control sites), males and females differed in diet and
foraging behavior. Most male feeding attempts were directed at large strong-flying insects, and males used a saltatory search
pattern that involved relatively infrequent moves of long duration. Females spent more effort catching small weak-flying insects
and visiting fruiting plants. Their search behavior involved frequent moves of short duration. The placement of meat-bait
on experimental sites led to a redistribution of large flies without influencing other prey types. Experimental females switched
foraging strategy by adopting a search pattern of relatively infrequent moves of long duration, increasing the frequency of
attempts to capture large prey, and reducing the importance of fruit in their diet. The experimental manipulation appeared
to influence space use. On control sites, both sexes had comparably sized home ranges. On experimental sites, male home ranges
were significantly larger than female home ranges.

Interactions between the red algaPlocamium hamatum J. Agardh (Rhodophyta) and other benthic organisms including the alcyonacean soft coralSinularia cruciata (Tixier-Durivault) were investigated on an inshore fringing reef environment in whichP. hamatum was the dominant large fleshy alga. Field observations of sessile reef organisms including octocorals and sponges living in close proximity toP. hamatum revealed that varying degrees of tissue necrosis were suffered by the invertebrates when in physical contact with the alga. In order to establish whether the chemical constituents of the alga, especially chloromertensene, played a role in this necrosis, manipulative field experiments were carried out in the Pelorus Channel, Palm Island group (18°34S; 146°29E), North Queensland, Australia, in November and December 1988. The first experiment involved the relocation of healthy plants and soft corals into contact and non-contact situations on a mesh grid. In all cases of contact betweenP. hamatum andS. cruciata, the soft coral suffered tissue necrosis (n=6,p=0.0022). The second experiment had the same design, but involved the use of artificial plants both uncoated and coated with natural levels of chloromertensene, in contact withS. cruciata. In all cases of contact with coated treatments, necrosis was observed inS. cruciata (n=4,p=0.025). In cases where uncoated artificial fronds were placed in contact with soft corals,S. cruciata showed minor abrasion effects, but no appreciable necrosis. Coated treatments were not fouled by epiphytes during the experiment and were not consumed by predators. Uncoated treatments were rapidly reduced in size by predation and any remaining material was biofouled. These experiments thus demonstrated that the deleterious effects observed in soft corals in the field were caused by contact with the algaP. hamatum, that these effects were indeed chemically mediated by chloromertensene, and that physical contact without chemical intervention caused no such deleterious effects. This is the first experimental evidence which conclusively demonstrates allelopathy between an alga and other marine organisms and identifies the compound responsible for the observed allelopathic effects. 相似文献

Interactions between the predatory sea star Pycnopodia helianthoides (Brandt, 1835) and two of its natural prey, the sea urchins Strongylocentrotus purpuratus (Stimpson, 1857) and S. franciscanus (Agassiz, 1863), are examined with regard to predator preference, predator diet, and prey defenses. The sea star is able to detect both species of sea urchin upstream in a Y-trough, but does not consistently choose one over the other (i.e., no preference). However, when the sea star is presented with equal numbers of similar-sized specimens of the two species of sea urchin, its diet is markedly nonrandom, since S. purpuratus is eaten almost 98% of the time. The defensive responses of the two species of sea urchin differ in form and effectiveness. S. franciscanus employs its long spines as defensive weapons, pinching the rays of an attacking sea star. This defensive response is more effective than the pedicellarial response used by S. purpuratus. The nonrandom diet of the predator seems to result primarily from prey defensive responses that differ in effectiveness, rather than from an intrinsic, behavioral preference of the predator at an earlier stage in the predator/prey interaction. 相似文献

A thorough understanding of communication requires an evaluation of both the signaler and receiver. Most analyses of prey–predator communication are incomplete because they examine only the behavior of the prey. Predators in these systems may be understudied because they are perceived as less tractable research subjects, due to their more cryptic hunting behaviors and secretive lifestyles. For example, research on interactions between rodents and rattlesnakes has focused on the behavior of rodent signalers, while responses of snakes have been virtually unexamined. Rattlesnakes are ambush predators, and capture rodents by waiting at foraging sites for long periods of time. In this study, I take advantage of the sedentary nature of this foraging strategy and use fixed videography to record natural encounters between timber rattlesnakes (Crotalus horridus) and their prey. Three different prey species were found to exhibit conspicuous visual displays to snakes, both when snakes were actively foraging, and when they were basking. After receiving displays, foraging snakes left their ambush sites and moved long distances before locating subsequent ambush sites, indicating that they responded to displays by abandoning attempts to ambush prey in the vicinity of signalers. This study represents the first quantitative analysis of the response of free-ranging snakes to signals from their prey, and elucidates a technique by which such quantitative data can be more easily obtained. 相似文献

Abstract: In April 1986, the endangered Perdido Key beach mouse (Peromyscus polionotus trissyllepsis) existed only as a small population of less than 30 animals on the western end of Perdido Key at Gulf State Park, Alabama This population was vulnerable to extinction from a variety of causes. Fifteen pairs of mice from Alabama were moved approximately 20 km on the same island to Gulf Islands National Seashore Florida between November 1986 and April 1988. The Alabama population was surveyed by live-trapping before each removal and showed a large increase during this study. Eleven pairs of mice were released into enclosures to stimulate burrowing and reduce dispersal at the release site. The last four pairs w e released unrestricted into the dune habitat Trapping in July 1988 revealed that virtually all available dune habitat (11,000 linear m; approximately 160 ha) had been occupied by the mice. Fifty-five individuals were captured including four of the released mice. Exchanges between the populations are recommended to prevent loss of genetic diversity. Future research should investigate demographics, dispersal pattern, and the application of DNA fingerprinting techniques to determine rates of gene flow in the population. The Perdido Key beach mouse provides an excellent model for studying the effects of a population bottleneck on genetic diversity and testing the predictions of population viability analysis. 相似文献

Effects of the interactions between selenium and phosphorus on the growth and selenium accumulation in rice (Oryza sativa) 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
The solution culture, paddy soil culture and the simulation experiments in the laboratory were conducted to clarify the interactions between selenium and phosphorus, and its effects on the growth and selenium accumulation in rice. Results revealed that a suitable supply of selenium could promote rice growth and excessive selenium could injure rice plant, causing lower biomass, especially in the roots. The supply of selenite could enhance the selenium contents of rice shoots and roots in solution culture and in soil culture. The selenium concentrations in roots were much higher than those in shoots supplied with the same rates of selenium and phosphorus. The interaction between selenium and phosphorus was evident. When the phosphorus supply increased to meet the needs of plant growth, phosphorus could promote absorption and accumulation of selenium in the shoots. If the phosphorus supply was excessive, phosphorus could inhibit the accumulation of selenium in the shoots at the lower selenite level (2 micromol l(-1)), but could not at the higher selenite level (10 micromol l(-1)). With the supply of phosphate increased, the selenium concentrations in the roots decreased significantly at both selenite levels. The presence of phosphate could decrease Se sorption on the soil surface and increase the selenium concentration in the soil solution. The concentrations of selenium in shoots and roots supplied with 0.08 g kg(-1) phosphorus were lower than those with no phosphorus supplied. With the increase of phosphorus added to 0.4 g kg(-1), the selenium concentration in shoots and roots increased. The effect of phosphorus on the concentration was statistically significant at all three selenium levels. 相似文献

Effects of copper and cadmium on growth, swimming and predator avoidance in Eurytemora affinis (Copepoda) 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
In this study we demonstrate the sensitivity of swimming behavior and predator-escape responses of nauplii of the estuarine copepod Eurytemora affinis to sublethal doses of Cu and Cd. Behavior was generally altered at metal doses below those affecting growth rates or survival of the copepods. Swimming velocities of Cu-dosed nauplii were different from controls at all concentrations of Cu tested (10–50 g l-1 total Cu) after 24- to 48-h exposure, whereas development rate of nauplii was significantly reduced only after 96 h at 25 g l-1. The 96 h LC50 for Cu was approximately 30 g l-1 Cu. Naupliar swimming velocity was also affected by Cd. Swimming speeds were reduced after 24 h at 130 g l-1, and development was slowed after 48 h at 116 g Cd l-1. The 96-h LC50 was >120 g l-1. Little is known of the adaptive role of specific motile behaviors in the success of larval copepods. We investigated the relationship of swimming speed to predator — prey interactions of the nauplii using both real and simulated predators. Nauplii exposed to Cu for 24 h were observed to be generally hyperactive, a condition which could increase their encounter frequency with predators. Reduced numbers of escape responses of nauplii to a simulated predator, another indication of increased vulnerability to predation, were observed only after 48-h exposure to Cu. Nevertheless, feeding rates of non-dosed larval striped bass on dosed nauplii (24 h at 25 g Cu l-1) were significantly higher than on control nauplii. Feeding rates of larval mysid shrimp, however, were not higher on similarly dosed nauplii; 24 h exposure of nauplii to >30 g Cu l-1 did result in increased predation by mysids.Contribution No. 272 of the US EPA Environmental Research Laboratory, Narragansett, Rhode Island 02882, USA 相似文献

The preference of large (>60 cm total length) Cape hake (Merluccius capensis Castelnau, 1861) for small conspecifics under natural conditions was analyzed off southern Namibia (S.E. Atlantic) between 1983 and 1989. The results indicate that cannibalism is not related to the density of the small conspecifics nor to the density of alternative prey, but rather that large hake have a dietary preference for small conspecifics. The main consequence of such cannibalism is a lack of density-dependent regulation of the M. capensis population. 相似文献
