The concentrations of 210Po and 210Pb were determined in more than 30 species of marine shrimp. Samples were collected in the years 1977 to 1980; most were from the Mediterrancean Sea near Monaco, the remainder from Kuwait, South Africa, USA and Great Britain. The median 210Po concentration was 8.0 pCi g-1 dry wt in the whole shrimp and 85 pCi g-1 dry in the hepatopancreas; the corresponding 210Po:210Pb activity ratios were 77 and 138, respectively. The range of concentrations covered more than two orders of magnitude for both nuclides. The variations in the levels of 210Po, in particular, could be related to biological and environmental factors; thus, penaeid shrimp had 210Po at median concentrations some three to four times higher than carid shrimp, and there was a steady increase in the median 210Po concentration as one moved from estuarine to coastal to pelagic to deep-pelagic species. 210Po levels were highest in 3 species of deep-pelagic penaeids, where a median 210Po concentration in the whole shrimp of 43 pCi g-1 dry wt was found. The natural radiation dose received by the hepatopancreas of such individuals will be of the order of 100 rem per yr. Elevated 210Po was also found in 4 species collected near Kuwait. The 210Po data are interpreted as indicating changes in the food regime of different shrimp; specifically it is suggested that 210Po-rich items such as hepatopancreas, faecal pellets and organic particulates are likely to be important in the diet of shrimp which feed at depth in the ocean. It is suggested further that the ultimate availability of 210Po to the foodchain depends on its form in sea water, and the need for information concerning the degree of organic binding of 210Po in natural waters in stressed.  相似文献

Abstract

Distributions of 210Pb and 7Be in the aerosol particles of different size fractions were measured around Taiwan offshore areas from October, 1994 to October, 1995. the size distribution and abundance of the aerosol particles showed both spatial and temporal variations. the particle concentrations off northwestern Taiwan were more than twice as those off northeastern Taiwan both in November and March, and the values were much higher in November than in March for both areas. the measured particle concentrations, except for one sample with an unusually high value, ranged from 10 to 83 μOgm ?3 in the study areas. the 210Pb concentrations in the aerosol particles filtered from the air mass varied between 20 × 10?3 and 72 × 10?3 dpm m?3 (1dpm = 0.45 pCi). the 210Pb concentrations in the area off southwestern Taiwan appeared somewhat higher than in other areas and were probably contributed by the land air from Taiwan which contains higher 210Pb in winter. the 210Pb concentrations off northern Taiwan were low in November when the aerosol concentrations were high, but they were high in March when the aerosol concentrations were low.

Based on the 7Be monitoring records of 20 years on the aerosol particles of the island by the Taiwan Radiation Monitoring Center, the mean settling rate averaged 0.91, 0.79 and 0.68 cm s?1, respectively, in northern, central and southern Taiwan. with these values and the 210Pb concentrations in the aerosols, the 210Pb flux was determined to be between 0.58 and 2.30 dpm cm?2y?1, with an average of 1.19 dpm cm?2y?1. Excluding the highest value due to its extremely high 210Pb and aerosol concentrations, the average is reduced to 1.05 dpm cm?2y?1. the activity median diameters (AMD) for 210Pb in the study areas were between 0.69 and < 0.49 μM with a mean of 0.5 öm based on 210Pb distributions in different particle size fractions. Thus, 210Pb was preferentially adsorbed on to the submicron particles. 7Be in the study areas showed a good correlation with 210Pb in total activity although the two nucides had different sources.  相似文献

An adult giant kelp plant (Macrocystis pyrifera), moved from an inshore kelp forest to an offshore, low-nitrogen environment near Santa Catalina Island, California (USA), maintained growth for 2 wk on internal nitrogen reserves. Frond elongation rates decreased significantly during the third week, and plant growth rate (wet wt) dropped from an initial inshore rate of 3.6 to 0.9% d-1. During this 3 wk period, nitrogen contents and free amino acid concentrations decreased, while mannitol and dry contents increased in frond tissues. After depletion of internal nitrogen reserves, the nitrogen content of lamina and stipe tissues averaged 1.1 and 0.7% dry wt, respectively. The experimental plant was exposed to higher ambient nitrogen concentrations during the last 2 wk. Rates of frond elongation and plant growth increased, but nitrogen content and amino acids in frond tissues remained low. Of the total nitrogen contained in frond tissue of the plant before transplantation, 58% was used to support growth in the absence of significant external nitrogen supply. Amino acids constituted a small proportion of these internal nitrogen reserves. Net movement of nitrogen occurred within large fronds, but not between different frond size classes. The nitrogen content of holdfast tissue remained relatively constant at 2.4% dry wt and accounted for 18 to 29% of the total nitrogen. Holdfast nitrogen was not used to support growth of nitrogen-depleted fronds. In comparison to Laminaria longicruris, which is adapted to long seasonal periods of low nitrogen availability, M. pyrifera has small nitrogen-storage capacity. However, internal reserves of M. pyrifera appear adequate to make nitrogen starvation uncommon in southern California kelp forests.  相似文献

Rates of NO 3 - uptake by individual blades of Macrocystis pyrifera (L.) C. Agardh were measured at different flow rates in the laboratory. Dissolution rates of hemispherical, plaster buttons attached to the blade surface provided a relative measure of flow rates over blades used in uptake experiments and also over intact blades of adult kelp plants in situ (Laguna Beach, California, USA; 1981). Laboratory results indicated that uptake was saturated at a flow rate equivalent to 2.5 cm s-1 current velocity. Flow rates over intact blades in situ always exceeded this uptake saturation level. Wave surge and movement of plant surfaces relative to the surrounding water provided sufficient flow to saturate uptake, even in a dense kelp canopy during low-current and calm sea-state conditions.  相似文献

The Macrocystis pyrifera (L.) C. Ag. frond is here described in terms of chlorophyll a, fucoxanthin, chlorophyll c and photosynthetic rate. Pigment concentrations increased back from the apical meristem reaching a maximum after 2 to 3 m. Pigment concentrations were then generally constant throughout most of the length of the frond, finally decreasing again in the oldest parts of the frond with the exception of the sporophylls. Pigment ratios remained relatively constant throughout. Maximum net photosynthetic rates on a given frond showed a decrease with tissue age on both an area basis (1040 down to 463 nmol O2 cm-2 h-1) and on a chlorophyll a basis, which was shown as half-saturation constants (quantum irradiance) which dropped on an area basis from 85 mol m-2 sec-1 at 4.5 m above the holdfast to 26 mol m-2 sec-1 at 15.5 m. Young sporophytes transplanted from the sea floor to the surface (12 m) tended to decrease pigment content, while those transplanted to the bottom tended to increase all pigments, but especially fucoxanthin. Photosynthetic rates, however, changed little on a unit area basis. The results of these data are considered in the light of recent work on photosynthetic units, tissue age effects and general adaptations of the M. pyrifera frond to its light environment.  相似文献

Regular observations made over a period of 5 yr in four permanent transects provided data on plant, sea urchin, and fish densities which indicate that two unusually severe winter storms in 1980 (Storm I) and 1983 (Storm II) had different effects on a southern California kelp-forest community. Storm I removed all canopies of the giant kelp Macrocystis pyrifera, but spared most understory kelps, mainly Pterygophora californica. Hence, the previously large accumulation of detached drift kelp, mostly M. pyrifera, disappeared. Denied their preferred diet of drift kelp, the sea urchins Strongylocentrotus franciscanus and S. purpuratus then emerged from shelters to find alternative food. Without effective predators, they consumed most living plants, including the surviving understory kelps. This weakened the important detritus-based food chain, as indicated indirectly by declining abundances of algal turf and fish (Embiotocidae) that eat small animals living in turf. In 1983, Storm II reversed the process by eliminating exposed urchins, while clearing rock surfaces for widespread kelp settlement and growth. By summer 1984, the kelp grew to maturity to form extensive canopies despite elevated water temperatures during summer and fall of 1983. Thus, severe storms may have vastly different effects on community structure, depending on the state of the community before the disturbance.  相似文献

210Po and 210Pb have been measured systematically in whole animals, muscle and hepatopancreas of crustaceans and of molluscan cephalopods representative of a pelagic and benthic food chain. The same nuclides were also measured in liver, pyloric caecum, stomach contents and muscle of tuna. The concentration factors from sea water to whole animals were approximately constant along both food chains, being of the order of 104 for 210Po and 102 for 210Pb. The highest concentration factors were found in shrimp of the genus Sergestes. In muscle, the concentration factors were an order of magnitude less; in the hepatopancreas, they were an order of magnitude higher, reaching 106 in shrimp of the genus Sergestes. Such concentrations imply alpha-radiation doses of the order of 10 rem per year and more in this organ, which contains about 50 to 90% of the 210Po in the whole animal in the 11 species analyzed. A detailed study of the intracellular behaviour of 210Po in the hepatopancreas is clearly indicated. 210Po can be used as a sensitive natural tracer in biological systems. Thus, feeding Meganyctiphanes norvegica in the laboratory on food low in 210Po led to an approximate value of about 61/2 days for the biological half-life of 210Po in the hepatopancreas of this euphausiid. Furthermore, the data on 210Po and 210Pb in the cephalopod hepatopancreas allowed the time of conservation of frozen squid which had been bought at the market to be estimated.  相似文献

The blacksmith Chromis punctipinnis, an abundant planktivorous damselfish off southern California, USA, shelters along rocky reefs at night. While sheltered, blacksmiths excrete ammonium that could, in turn, be utilized by nearby benthic macrophytes. Laboratory experiments during the summer and fall of 1983 and 1984 indicate that ammonium excretion at night ranged from 18.1 mol h-1 by a 8.5 g (dry) fish, to 89.1 mol h-1 by a 27.3 g fish; excretion rates generally declined throughout the night. Field measurements at night indicate that ammonium concentrations were significantly higher in rocky crevices occupied by blacksmiths than in unoccupied shelters, and the ammonium level in one shelter dropped after a blacksmith was experimentally removed. Young kelp plants (Macrocystis pyrifera) are capable of taking up ammonium at night. Ammonium levels in chambers containing both a blacksmith and a young kelp plant were significantly lower than in chambers containing only a fish, and ammonium levels dropped in ammoniumspiked chambers that contained kelp plants. Nighttime ammonium uptake rates by young kelp plants, which averaged 1.6 mol g-1 (dry) h-1, were only slightly lower than those during the day. Daytime excretion by blacksmiths occasionally results in elevated ammonium levels in the water column. On two of six days, ammonium concentrations in midwater foraging aggregations were slightly but significantly higher than in upcurrent controls; since blacksmiths typically aggregate at the incurrent margin of kelp beds, the ammonium is swept downcurrent and may be utilized by large M. pyrifera that extend through the water column. Thus, the activities of blacksmiths may results in the importation of extrinsic, inorganic nitrogen to primary producers on temperate reefs.  相似文献

Rocky ocean bottoms are covered from time to time with small amounts of fine sediments. This material may interfere with the development of germling stages of Macrocystis pyrifera. Tests were performed by introducing sediments before and after spores were dispersed in culture dishes. 10 mg cm-2 of sediment, enough to occlude the surface, prevents spore attachment, greatly reducing the probability of survival. Smothering of established germlings was severe at 108 mg sediment cm-2. Water motion further reduced spore success where sediments were present, probably because of abrasive scour. Mechanisms of natural and human interference with M. pyrifera reproduction are suggested.  相似文献

Instantaneous relative growth rates, (d-1), were measured for juveniles of the giant kelp Macrocystis pyrifera transplanted to study sites in Southern California kelp forests between 1978 and 1982. Growth rates ranged from negative values (indicating loss of tissue) to 0.03 (doubling of total frond length every 19 d). Multiple regression analysis of growth versus irradiation, temperature, nitrogen concentration and amount of fouling revealed that all these factors had significant effects, together accounting for about 50% of the total variance. Elevated irradiation and nitrogen levels had strongly stimulatory effects (tissue nitrogen may have been more critical than ambient nitrogen for growth), while high temperature and fouling had strongly inhibitory effects. Irradiation was the most important factor influencing growth in 6 of the 8 transplant experiments. During these 6 experiments, the compensating irradiation level (below which there was no growth) was between 0.4 and 0.7 E m-2 d-1, and saturating irradiation was between 2 and 3 E m-2 d-1. During two of the experiments, growth was apparently limited by extremely high temperatures or low nitrogen levels. Quantum irradiation levels in the kelp forest were generally between the compensation and saturation levels. However, irradiation levels occasionally dropped below the compensation point for several months. Irradiation was occasionally low enough to limit the distribution of juvenile kelp by inhibiting growth, especially in the deeper portions of the kelp forest and under dense canopies formed by adult plants.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of an investigation from 1980 to 1985 on the content of 210Po in sea water and its accumulation in southern Baltic plankton. The mean value of the 210Po concentration in sea water has been determined to be about 0.5 mBq dm-3, with the proportion of the dissolved forms being ca 80%. It has been proved that 210Po is accumulated by plankton organisms. The mean 210Po concentration factors calculated on the basis of its content in plankton fall within the range from 5×103 to 4.2×104 and increase as follows: phytoplankton210Po concentration in mesozooplankton collected at the Slupsk Trough and the Gdask Basin have been observed. The above differences have been related to intense blue-green alga blooming in the Gdask Basin.  相似文献

Growth rates of four Nautilus scrobiculatus Lightfoot and three N. pompilius Linnaeus captured in Papua New Guinea in 1985 were measured using a chronology based on the naturally occurring radionuclides 210Pb and 210Po. The age of the las septum in mature specimens of both species was more than one year, whereas the time of septal formation in a submature specimen of N. pompilius was ca 180 d. The 210Po/210Pb method was also used to determine the growth rates of four immature N. pompilius captured in the Philippines in 1983 before and after introduction into an aquarium. Introduction into the aquarium was marked by a dramatic decrease in the activity of 210Pb of the septa, the formation of a black line on the exterior of the shell, and a reduction in the spacing of adjacent septa in two specimens. Based on the number of septa formed in the aquarium, the average time of septal formation ranged from 50 to 80 d. These estimates were consistent with those calculated from the 210Po/210Pb activity ratios of the septa that formed in the aquarium, thus providing a check on the radiometric method. The average time of septal formation just prior to introduction into the aquarium appears, within the uncertainty of the radioactive measurements, to have been similar to that in the aquarium, indicating no dramatic alteration in the growth rate of these specimens.  相似文献

The giant kelp Macrocystis pyrifera is one of the largest and fastest growing seaweeds and is dominant over large areas of the west coast of North America. A model of its growth has been developed which describes plant biomass and production over the course of a year as a function of environmental parameters which affect the light flux. Such parameters include water clarity, spacing between plants, bottom depth, latitude, harvesting activity, and photosynthetic response (P max and I k ). Model results for a standard set of conditions (latitude 33°N, 3 m plant spacing, water absorbance of 0.115 m-1 and 12 m depth) yield a peak daily gross production of almost 6 g C m-2 d-1, peak daily net production of almost 3 g C m-2 d-1, and a peak specific growth rate of about 0.022 d-1. Annual gross production for this case is 1 567 g C m-2 yr-1; annual net production is 537 g C m-2 yr-1. These values are comparable to those from field measurements. Size and timing of biomass and production peaks are affected by changes in the parameters describing the light field, with peaks usually occurring later in the year for more adverse circumstances. Inhigher latitudes, the seasonal variation is so extreme that the plant could not last the year at 53° N in 12 m of water, although it is able to survive the year in shallower water. Harvesting has severe effects on biomass and production. Model results suggest that light limitation is a very important constraint on kelp growth that should not be overlooked. This implies that differences in parameters describing two environments must be considered when comparing results obtained at different locales.  相似文献

We examined the distribution and abundance of organisms on subtidal rocky reefs at nine sites around the Chatham Islands, a remote group 780 km east of southern New Zealand. We sampled five depth strata ranging from 1 to<16 m to identify spatial patterns in the abundance of algae and invertebrates and to assess their variation within and among sites. This information is used to discuss hypotheses concerning community structure at this remote locality. Several patterns were apparent. The immediate subtidal was occupied by the southern bull kelp Durvillaea spp. A suite of 11 fucalean species were dominant to a depth of 10 m with an average abundance of 28 m-2, while one species, Carpophyllum flexuosum, occurred mostly in deeper water. Only two laminarian species of algae were present at the islands. The indigenous Lessonia tholiformis was abundant at 2.5 to 15 m and was not found in deeper water, while the giant kelp Macrocystis pyrifera was abundant at two sites in 12 to 18 m. The commercially valuable abalone Haliotis iris was extremely abundant in shallow water, with an overall mean of 6 m-2 at 5 m. The sea urchin Evechinus chloroticus was common, but reached high densities only in small (<25 m2) patches. The characteristic urchin-dominated zones reported in kelp beds world-wide were not seen. There was considerable site-to-site variation in the occurrence and abundance of individual species. Some differences between sites were associated with shelter from swell (e.g. M. pyrifera was found only in sheltered sites) and physical habitat (e.g. juvenile H. iris were found only beneath boulders inshore), but much of the variation could not be explained by physical or depth-related factors alone. We hypothesize that the differences in these kelp bed assemblages compared to mainland New Zealand are partially due to the high degree of endemism at the Chatham Islands. Local variation cannot be explained by herbivory, and is most likely the result of the various life-history characteristics of the major habitat-forming species, the large brown algae.  相似文献

Marine invertebrates are thought to accumulate 210Po primarily from their food. In this study, a pulse-chase methodology was used to examine the assimilation and depuration of 210Po by Mytilus edulis from the common marine alga Isochrysis galbana. The digestion of 210Po from I. galbana occurred via a biphasic process, characteristic of a rapid (extracellular) and slow (intracellular) digestion typical of marine bivalves. The mantle/gill and foot have no known digestive role, yet their 210Po specific activities increased after 24 h. It is proposed that this increase in 210Po specific activity was related to 210Po being incorporated into these tissues from 210Po assimilated from I. galbana during extracellular digestion. It is proposed that the linear loss of 210Po previously accumulated by control mussels was related to the continual state of renewal and replacement of cellular proteins, with 210Po turnover and metabolism governed by protein turnover and metabolism. M. edulis' assimilation efficiency of 210Po from the 210Po-labelled alga was calculated to be 17.2 ± 2.1%, and thus similar to that of Ag, Cd, Co, Se and Zn by bivalves from other marine algae species. Rates of net photosynthesis and nocturnal respiration by individual blades of the giant kelp Macrocystis pyrifera (L.) C. Agardh in southern California, were determined in situ by measuring oxygen production in polyethylene bags during spring/summer of 1983. Mature blades from different depths in the water column exhibited different photosynthetic characteristics. Blades from the surface canopy (0 to 1 m depth) exhibited higher photosynthetic capacity under saturating irradiance and higher photosynthetic efficiency at low irradiances than blades from 3 to 5 or 7 to 9 m depths. Saturating irradiance was lower for canopy blades than for deeper blades. Canopy blades showed no short-term photoinhibition, but photosynthetic rates of deeper blades were significantly reduced during 1 to 2 h incubations at high irradiances. Results of 1 to 2 wk acclimation experiments indicated that differences between photosynthetic characteristics of blades from different depths were primarily attributable to acclimation light conditions. Vertical displacement of blades within the kelp canopy occurred on a time-scale of 1 min to 1 h. Blades continually moved between the unshaded surface layer and deeper, shaded layers. Vertical movement did not maximize photosynthesis by individual blades; only a small proportion of blades making up a dense surface canopy maintained light-saturated photosynthetic rates during midday incubations. The relatively high photosynthetic rates exhibited by canopy blades over the entire range of light conditions probably resulted from acclimation to intermittent high and low irradiances, a consequence of vertical displacement. Vertical displacement also reduced the afternoon depression in photosynthesis of individual canopy blades. The overall effect of vertical displacement was optimization of total net photosynthesis by the kelp canopy and, therefore, optimization of whole-plant production.  相似文献

The northern distribution limit of giant kelp, Macrocystis pyrifera (Agardh), along the Pacific coast of North America is relatively stable near Point Año Nuevo, California, but its southern limit has varied over hundreds of kilometers along the Baja California peninsula during the past 20 years. The factors that drive this variability in the southern limit were examined by: (1) quantifying the abundances of M. pyrifera and the subsurface stipitate kelp, Eisenia arborea (Areschoug), near M. pyriferas then southern limit at Punta San Roque (27°15N; 114°42W) on ten occasions between August 1997 and June 2002 (prior to and following the 1997/1998 El Niño Southern Oscillation); (2) initiating a field manipulation at Punta San Roque in June 2000 to examine competition between these two kelp species; and (3) surveying 20 additional sites near Punta San Hipólito (27°01N; 114°00W) in June 2002 to determine whether M. pyrifera populations had recovered to their pre-1982/1983 El Niño southern range limit after ~20 years of absence. These observations and the experimental results suggest that M. pyrifera is removed from its southern limit by the high temperatures and large waves associated with El Niños, while E. arborea is able to survive and recruit in high densities and thereby delay or even prevent M. pyriferas recovery. An inverse relationship was observed between these two species over the 5-year study. The field experiment showed that at both 4 months and 1 year after areas occupied by E. arborea were cleared, substantial recruitment of M. pyrifera occurred, while recruitment was negligible in uncleared areas. This study suggests that the southern range limit of M. pyrifera is determined by increased mortality and recruitment failure following the warm temperatures and low nutrient conditions associated with El Niños, limited substrate availability, and by competition with the more persistent populations of E. arborea.Communicated by J.P. The relative growth rates of juvenile Macrocystis pyrifera in southern California kelp forests were substantially reduced during the El Niño of 1982–1984. The lower growth rates were correlated with increased temperature and decreased nitrogen availability. Fertilization of juvenile plants with slow-release nitrogen-phosphorus fertilizer increased their growth rates to levels previously observed when temperatures were low and nutrient levels were high. The limitation in growth of M. pyrifera by levels of available nutrients during El Niño was in contrast to the usual limitation of growth by irradiance during non-El Niño years. Thus, there was a shift in the relative importance of factors controlling growth of juvenile M. pyrifera during El Niño.  相似文献

Concentrations of the naturally-ocurring radionuclides 210Po and 210Pb were measured in krill (Euphausia superba), mesozooplankton, phytoplankton and sea water collected during the South African SIBEX cruise to the Antarctic in autumn 1984. The data reported constitute the first substantial measurements on 210Po and 210Pb in such samples in the Antarctic Ocean. The concentrations of 210Po in mesozooplankton and phytoplankton are unexceptional in comparison with those from other oceans. The SIBEX E. superba, however, have higher levels of 210Po than usually found in euphausiids. The 210Po data, combined with reasonable estimates of biological quantitites such as the fractional assimilation, are used to obtain information about the diet of E. superba. It is suggested that the higher 210Po in the SIBEX E. superba reflects a change from an almost entirely phytoplanktonic diet in summer to a more omnivorous diet as winter approaches. The data show that there are allometric relationships between the 210Po content of euphausiids and animal size; these are discussed briefly. The limited sea-water data presented are characterized by unusually high 210Po:210Pb activity ratios and need further investigation.  相似文献

The pattern of growth (biomass accumulation) in Ecklonia radiata throughout the year and across a depth profile was investigated using the traditional hole-punch method, and the information presented in context with concurrently measured in situ net productivity rates. The rate of net daily productivity showed a lack of consistent seasonal variability, remaining constant throughout the year at two of the four depths measured (3 m and 12 m), and becoming higher during winter at another (5 m). Throughout the year, rates of net daily productivity differed significantly across the depth profile. Net daily productivity rates averaged 0.017 g C g–1 dwt day–1 and 0.005 g C g–1 dwt day–1 at a depth of 3 m (1,394 mol O2 g–1 dwt day–1) and 10 m (382 mol O2 g–1 dwt day–1) respectively. In contrast, the biomass accumulation rate of E. radiata was highly seasonal, with low rates of growth occurring in autumn (0.002 g dwt g–1 dwt day–1 at both 3 and 10 m) and summer (0.007 and 0.004 g dwt g–1 dwt day–1 at 3 and 10 m respectively) and higher rates in spring (0.016 and 0.007 g dwt g–1 dwt day–1 at 3 and 10 m respectively) and winter (0.015 and 0.008 g dwt g–1 dwt day–1 at 3 and 10 m respectively). The proportion of assimilated carbon used for biomass accumulation varied throughout the year, between 5% and 41% at 3 m and between 28% and 128% at 10 m.
