Shifts in the timing and magnitude of the spring plankton bloom in response to climate change have been observed across a wide range of aquatic systems. We used meta-analysis to investigate phenological responses of marine and freshwater plankton communities in mesocosms subjected to experimental manipulations of temperature and light intensity. Systems differed with respect to the dominant mesozooplankton (copepods in seawater and daphnids in freshwater). Higher water temperatures advanced the bloom timing of most functional plankton groups in both marine and freshwater systems. In contrast to timing, responses of bloom magnitudes were more variable among taxa and systems and were influenced by light intensity and trophic interactions. Increased light levels increased the magnitude of the spring peaks of most phytoplankton taxa and of total phytoplankton biomass. Intensified size-selective grazing of copepods in warming scenarios affected phytoplankton size structure and lowered intermediate (20–200?μm)-sized phytoplankton in marine systems. In contrast, plankton peak magnitudes in freshwater systems were unaffected by temperature, but decreased at lower light intensities, suggesting that filter feeding daphnids are sensitive to changes in algal carrying capacity as mediated by light supply. Our analysis confirms the general shift toward earlier blooms at increased temperature in both marine and freshwater systems and supports predictions that effects of climate change on plankton production will vary among sites, depending on resource limitation and species composition. 相似文献

The houses of oikopleurid larvaceans are of such a delicate structure that their preservation and storage for reference collections and post-collection study has been essentially impossible. However, houses ofOikopleura dioica, O. labradoriensis andO. vanhoeffeni, ranging in size from 0.7 to 7 cm, may be dried onto glass slides or onto paper or membrane filters so that most structural details are maintained. The handling of houses during the drying process is greatly facilitated if they are prestained by particulate or colloidal dyes while still inhabited. Such staining also reveals a wealth of structural detail that is difficult to obtain by other means. Staining the house after mounting and drying is also possible, but more difficult. The described technique may be used for making permanent records of oikopleurid houses of all sizes, from the first post-metamorphic house of <1 mm diameter to the largest known oikopleurid house of perhaps 1 m diameter. Such records may serve both as taxonomic tools and as specimens for detailed structural and chemical analysis by high-power microscopes and microbeam instruments. 相似文献

Chlorophyll, protein, DNA and RNA concentrations in cultures ofCyclotella nana (Hustedt) andDunaliella tertiolecta (Butcher) were higher in blue light and lower in green light than in white light of the same intensity. Total carotenoid concentrations were highest in green light. Total pigment concentrations were highest in cells grown in blue light, lowest in those from green light. The relative changes in pigment concentrations associated with differences in spectral composition of the radiation are comparable to those often observed in phytoplankton from various depths in stratified natural water. Light adaptation in algae as a response to light quality is suggested. The chemical composition of plankton algae can be expected to vary considerably with depth. 相似文献

In this paper a method for collection of vertically and horizontally integrated volume-weighted composite samples for analysis of water chemistry and plankton is presented. The method, which requires a proper knowledge of lake morphometry parameters, includes proposed standard procedures for determination of sampling interval thickness, maximum depth of sampling, selection of sampling stations, and distribution of discrete samples. An example of the outcome of the method in a lake with uncomplicated basin morphometry is given and the results are discussed against background of general lake basin morphometry data. The aim of the paper is to start a debate about optimization (statistical as well as ecological) of volume weighted composite sampling. 相似文献

The effect of light quality on growth, photosynthesis and carbon metabolism in two species of marine algae,Cyclotella nana (Hustedt) andDunaliella tertiolecta (Butcher), was examined. Relative growth constants forC. nana were 0.37, 0.29 and 0.25 in blue, white and green light, respectively. Corresponding constants were 0.41, 0.31 and 0.29 forD. tertiolecta. Photosynthetic rates in both species were higher in blue light and lower in green light compared with white light of the same intensity. More than 60% of14C assimilated byC. nana orD. tertiolecta grown in blue or green light was incorporated into the ethanol-insoluble fraction, compared with 10 to 30% in this fraction in white light. The relative importance of the various components within this fraction was independent of light quality. Although less14C was assimilated into the ethanol-soluble fraction in blue or green light, there was a relative increase in some amino acids and organic acids in this fraction and a decrease in sugars and sugar phosphates relative to white light of the same intensity. The variation of the rate of silicate uptake with varying silicate concentration in the medium was investigated in short-term experiments with the following marine diatom species:Skeletonema costatum, Thalassiosira pseudonana, T. decipiens, Ditylum brightwellii, andLicmophora sp. The uptake conformed to Michaelis-Menten kinetics only after a correction had been made for reactive silicate that apparently could not be utilized by the diatoms. The magnitude of this correction was in the range of 0.3 to 1.3 g-at Si/l. Mean values of the half-saturation constant of silicate uptake were calculated for the different species. The lowest value was found inS. costatum (0.80 g-at Si/l) and the highest inT. decipiens (3.37 g-at Si/l). Growth limitation by low silicate concentrations could be a cause of species succession in marine plankton-diatom blooms. 相似文献

ABSTRACTLong-term observations of the Xiamen Sea in Fujian Province were used to analyze variations in sea temperature, salinity, inorganic nitrogen (N), activated phosphate (P), and phytoplankton, as well as the features of red tides. Results showed that in recent decades, sea temperature and concentrations of N and P nutrients increased while salinity decreased attributed to climate warming, rainfall, and human sewage. In addition, reduction in the number of phytoplankton species and rising abundance of phytoplankton indicated that the structure of phytoplankton community presented a simplified and minimized trend which magnified the dominance of dominant phytoplankton species. Since 2000, red tides have occurred more frequently, and the eutrophic-type diatom species, Skeletonema costatum appears to be the predominant species. Data suggested that variations of N and P nutrients exert a potent and rapid influence on phytoplankton than sea temperature and ocean salinity. 相似文献

The functional responses of Oithona nana (Giesbr.) to various phytoplankton and zooplankton food species are described. The food species were divided into three size categories, the seasonal abundances of which were measured in Loch Turnaig, a Scottish sea loch in 1977. The seasonal variations in feeding rates in the sea for each size class were derived. The seasonal variation in respiration rate of O. nana was measured, and metabolic requirements were claculated as between 6 and 40% of the food material estimated as being eaten. O. nana differs from other common copepods in having a wide food-particle size spectrum and a low metabolic rate. It is suggested that these adaptations constitute the strategy whereby O. nana maintains its population levels throughout the year. 相似文献

Abstract This study reports the concentrations of total mercury and methyl mercury in sixteen families of marine biota caught off the coast of Kasimedu in Chennai, India, an important but understudied fish landing region. These included the commonly caught croakers, carangids, rays, goat fish, anchovies, crabs, and prawns. There was no correlation between total mercury or methyl mercury with fish length or mass. All concentrations were lower than the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India limits (total mercury = 500?μg/kg; methyl mercury = 250?μg/kg). Some values were above screening levels (total mercury >40?μg/kg wet weight) when considering possible adverse effects in predatory fish that consume the analyzed biota. The influence of light and temperature on photosynthetic rate as measured by C14O2-fixation of marine benthic diatoms was investigated, using both intact sediment samples (Marshall et al., 1973) and suspensions of diatoms harvested by a lenstissue technique (Eaton and Moss, 1966). After C14-incubation, sediment samples were filtered, burned in a sample oxidizer, and their activity determined in a liquid scintillation counter. Photosynthetic rate of mixed field populations is saturated by a light intensity of approximately 10,000 lux; at still higher light intensities no photoinhibition was found. In contrast to the mixed field populations, unialgal cultures of the benthic diatom Amphiprora alata Kütz. exhibited strong photoinhibition at higher light intensities (10,000 to 60,000 lux). Within a range of 4° to 20°C, the photosynthetic rate increased about 10%/Co. No differences in photosynthetic pattern were observed between epipelic and epipsammic species. 相似文献

The contribution of enhancement to the total photosynthesis of marine macroalgae in their natural habitats was estimated by comparing the photosynthesis measured by O2-electrode in five broad-band light fields with that predicted (on the assumption that no enhancement was occurring) from the photosynthetic action spectrum of each plant and the spectral distribution of the light fields. The excess of measured values divided by calculated values provided a measure of enhancement. Although 37% enhancement was observed for red algae in unfiltered quartz-iodine light, and 18% for green and brown algae, substantially lower values were obtained for all species in more natural light fields. In those typical of shallow coastal waters, phycoerythrin-rich red algae exhibited 15 to 20% enhancement, but little enhancement (<5%) was detected in other algae. In a green light field, representing deep coastal water, there was no significant enhancement in any species, and only green and brown algae showed any enhancement (ca 8%) in broad-band blue light, similar to that in deep oceanic waters. Quantum yields of 0.09 to 0.10 O2 molecules per absorbed photon were recorded in most light fields for green and brown algae with thin thalli, but yields decreased in the blue light field and in species with thicker thalli. All red algae had quantum yields of about 0.08 O2 molecules per absorbed photon, except in the blue light field, in which quantum yields were reduced by 70%. 相似文献

The influence of 49 combinations of salinity (10–40 S, at 5 S intervals) and temperature (0°–30°C, at 5C° intervals) on the maximum daily division rate (K) and 18 combinations of light intensity (six levels) and temperature (5°, 15°, and 25°C) on photosynthesis, cell division, and chlorophyll a was examined using two clones of Thalassiosira rotula Meunier isolated from the upwelling area of Baja California (clone C8) and from Narragansett Bay, Rhode Islands (clone A8). Physiological differences appear to characterize these to clones with regard to their temperature tolerance (C8 5°–30°C, A8 0°–25°C), maximum growth rate (C8 K=2.9, A8 K=2.4), chlorophyll a content, and in the rates of growth and photosynthesis in response to light intensity and temperature. Optimum salinity for both clones (25–30 S) was generally independent of temperature, while chlorophyll a content decreased with temperature. T. rotula is a cosmopolitan paractic species; experimental studies indicate that it is eurythermal and moderately euryhaline. Comparison of five additional Narragansett Bay isolates of T. rotula reveal minimal spacial or temporal variability in genetically determined physiological characteristics within this local population. 相似文献

In an intensive study (lasting 25 h) of the production, export and grazing of phytoplankton in a small marine basin, it was found that 58% of the production (11% of the total standing stock) was lost by exchange with the sea and 34% was consumed by grazing of zooplankton. The measured production of phytoplankton could be balanced, to within a few percent, against grazing, export, and a small, measured, net change in the total standing stock of the basin. Large variations were observed in concentrations of chlorophyll and zooplankton at the mouth of the basin over the 25 h period. These variations were associated with changes in the height of the tide, but were about 21/2 h out of phase with it. Strong negative correlations were observed between chlorophyll and transport, such that only 35% of the chlorophyll exported was exchanged via the mean flow, while 65% was exchanged via the fluctuations. The correlation was even more striking with zooplankton, for which virtually all the export was associated with the fluctuations in the transport. Time series observations in the centre of the basin revealed considerable short-term variability in both chlorophyll and zooplankton, but the variations were smaller than those observed at the mouth of the basin, and the phase lag with the tide was longer. The evaluation of more than 10,000 samples of plankton, taken at standard stations from 1953 to 1960 in the Barents Sea, made it possible to supplement considerably the species list of medusae, siphonophores, and ctenophores, and to revise some ecological and biogeographical characteristics of many of them. Quantitative data, assembled over many years, on the occurrence of the above-mentioned groups, demonstrated the impossibility of using the vast majority of representatives of this fauna as biological indicators. During the very warm year of 1960, reproductively and vegetatively cold-adapted forms produced the same population increase as the thermophilic forms. The change in thermal conditions influenced these animals indirectly via a favourable biotic situation due to a prolongation of the nutrition period. The capability to vary the number of eggs, timing, rates and types of reproduction, to withstand long periods of starvation, etc., facilitates a flexible synchronization of the population dynamics of these pelagic predators with the quantity of plankton used for nutrition. The same properties stipulate the possibility of seasonal and annual meandering in regard to the boundaries of the water areas occupied. 相似文献

Marine reserves are promoted as an effective supplement to traditional fishery management techniques of harvest quotas and effort limitation. However, quantitative fishery models have ignored the impact of noncompliance (poaching). Here we link a model of a harvested fish population to a game-theoretic representation of fisherman behavior to quantify the effect of poaching on fishery yield and the enforcement effort required to maintain any desired level of reserve effectiveness. Although higher fish densities inside reserves will typically entice fishermen to poach, we show that the initial investment in enforcement efforts provides the greatest return on maintaining the benefits of the reserve to the fishery. Furthermore, we find that poaching eliminates the positive effect of fish dispersal on yield that is predicted by traditional models that ignore fisherman behavior. Our results broaden a fundamental insight from previous models of marine reserves, the effective equivalence of the harvest quota and reserve fraction, to the more realistic scenario in which fishermen attempt to maximize their economic payoffs. 相似文献

The small marine plankton diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana Hasle and Heimdal (Guillard's clone 3H) was grown in chemostats with silicate as the limiting nutrient. The calculated maximum growth rates were comparable to those previously reported for this species. The silica content of the diatom shells varied with the growth rate. As the growth rate approached zero, there were still measurable quantities of residual reactive silicate in the medium. In one of the two chemostats used, silicate assimilation by the cells was inefficient due to some unknown internal or external factor. In the other chemostat, statistically calculated half-saturation constants of growth were in the range of 0.5 to 0.8 g—at Si/l, depending on which kind of correction was made for residual silicate. Half-saturation constants of steady-state mean silicate uptake per cell and hour, calculated in a similar fashion, were in the range of 1.4 to 2.6 g—at Si/l. These results indicate that the silicate concentrations causing a reduced silicate uptake by this species in nature do not necessarily result in a correspondingly reduced growth rate. Growth in coastal waters is likely to become seriously limited by a shortage of silicate only when most of the silicate originally present has been removed in the course of a diatom bloom. 相似文献

The sampling performance of two high-speed samplers, (Delfino I and II), fitted with a calibrated flow meter, was studied in the open Ligurian Sea using a battery comprising 6 such Delfinos linked together. Since, in plankton counts, only those organisms should be counted which are definitely retained in the nets, several techniques for the separation of the organisms which pass through the pore of a net of a given pore size and those which are safely retained were tested. Attempts to separate these two fractions by filtration of the fixed sample through nets of different pore sizes were not successful, as living organisms were able to pass through pore sizes which retained dead organisms. However, optical sizing under the dissecting microscope during counting gave reproducible results. Using this counting technique, the influence of the pore size of plankton nets on the reproducibility of sampling of natural populations was studied. The results obtained show that live plankton passes through the net pores at a size at which fixed plankton is retained. Hence, the minimum retention size for living and dead plankton is different. By comparing samples taken with nets of different pore sizes, and counting the organisms caught according to different sizes, it was possible to determine the minimum retention size of live plankton organisms for several different net pore-sizes. The minimum retention size is, therefore, the smallest pore size at which the organisms of a certain width cannot escape through the pores of the net and are, thus, quantitatively retained in the net. By applying the criterion of minimum retention size, the influence of speed towing on the number of plankton organisms caught was studied. The present study was conducted to determine the effects of microwave oven frying on production of four, light polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) anthracene, fluorene, phenathrene, and pyrene in four tissues heart, liver, neck, and wings of Aseel chickens. The microwave oven-fried samples of tissues along with respective control after appropriate preparation were analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography. These PAH were identified by comparing retention time of the unknown with known ones and concentration was calculated. Data showed that among the four chicken tissues, the neck contained the maximum level (0.079 mg/kg) of anthracene while wings contained the minimum (0.006 mg/kg). Similarly, in case of flourene, the fried heart showed greater percentage increase (225.04%) while wings showed 16.18% fluorene compared with other two organs, while phenanthrene and pyrene were maximal in wings at 0.249 mg/kg and 0.094 mg/kg, respectively. Results demonstrate that high-temperature treatment such as microwave oven frying of chicken meat might be responsible to generate these toxicants. Further study is to determine the production of other PAH under the different barbecuing conditions using various meat varieties. 相似文献
