In order to study taxon richness, biodiversity and abundance patterns in the North Atlantic from temperate latitudes through Arctic to high Arctic latitudes, we recorded the faunas (at ELWS level) colonizing 20 cobbles from three sites at each of seven boulder-field localities (south-west England, 50°N; Wales, 51°N; west Scotland, 56°N; Iceland, 64°N; Tromsø, 70°N; Svalbard, 77°N, 79°N). Inverse correlations were found between latitude and all measures of richness (species, orders, and phyla numbers) and biodiversity (S–W, P). However, these correlations were driven mostly by the consistently impoverished Arctic sites; an even cline of decreasing diversity from south to north did not exist. Multidimensional scaling revealed two communities, temperate–subarctic species-rich and high arctic species-poor. Evenness as measured by Pielou’s index was similar across all latitudes. Abundance data exhibited a similar trend to the species richness and diversity data with a significant negative correlation with latitude, but when Arctic data were excluded the correlation vanished.  相似文献

Reef crabs, Ozius truncatus H. Milne-Edwards 1834, and gastropods, Bembicium nanum (Lamarck, 1882) and Nerita atramentosa Reeve, 1855, were collected from a South Australian rocky intertidal platform in April 1981. Laboratory experiments were conducted to determine (1) the size of prey chosen, and (2) the energy gained by the reef crabs feeding on B. nanum and N. atramentosa. The time taken to break open and consume prey increased exponentially with prey shell height. Crabs with larger master claws had shorter handling times for a given prey size. When offered a range of prey sizes, crabs selected prey of a certain size, well below the maximum prey size that they could handle. The mean prey size selected by crabs did not concide with the size predicted to yield the maximum rate of energy gain. For example, one reef crab preferred B. nanum 5 to 8 mm in size, but the size class predicted to yield the greatest energy gain was 4 to 4.9 mm. The results of the laboratory prey-choice experiments are discussed in relation to the shore-level size gradients of B. nanum and N. atramentosa.  相似文献

This study examined the effects of a guild of micrograzing harpacticoid copepods (dominated by two species of Paradactylopodia sp. nov. and one species of Scutellidium sp. nov.) and a mesograzing periwinkle, Afrolittorina praetermissa, on the early recruitment of intertidal macroalgae on a wave-exposed, rocky shore. This is the first study, to our knowledge, to examine the effects of micrograzers (<500 μm) on intertidal macroalgal recruitment. Data showed that microscopic harpacticoid copepods altered the assemblages and reduced the densities of several macroalgal taxa, while A. praetermissa changed the assemblages and reduced both the density and number of macroalgal taxa. Recruitment of encrusting coralline algae was actually higher in copepod inclusions than exclusions, suggesting that copepods may be beneficial to the recruitment of this algal group. These results contribute to the understanding of grazing as a factor causing high mortality of algal recruits, but also highlight the need for more studies that examine the effects of micro- and mesograzers on the distribution and abundance of macroalgae.  相似文献

Mid-ocean ridges are common features of the world’s oceans but there is a lack of understanding as to how their presence affects overlying pelagic biota. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) is a dominant feature of the Atlantic Ocean. Here, we examined data on euphausiid distribution and abundance arising from several international research programmes and from the continuous plankton recorder. We used a generalized additive model (GAM) framework to explore spatial patterns of variability in euphausiid distribution on, and at either side of, the MAR from 60°N to 55°S in conjunction with variability in a suite of biological, physical and environmental parameters. Euphausiid species abundance peaked in mid-latitudes and was significantly higher on the ridge than in adjacent waters, but the ridge did not influence numerical abundance significantly. Sea surface temperature (SST) was the most important single factor influencing both euphausiid numerical abundance and species abundance. Increases in sea surface height variance, a proxy for mixing, increased the numerical abundance of euphausiids. GAM predictions of variability in species abundance as a function of SST and depth of the mixed layer were consistent with present theories, which suggest that pelagic niche availability is related to the thermal structure of the near surface water: more deeply-mixed water contained higher euphausiid biodiversity. In addition to exposing present distributional patterns, the GAM framework enables responses to potential future and past environmental variability including temperature change to be explored.  相似文献

Recruitment variation can be a major source of fluctuation in populations and communities, making it difficult to generalize results. Determining the scales of variation and whether spatial patterns in the supply of individuals are persistent over time can provide insight into spatial generality and the application of conservation and metacommunity models. We examined these issues using eight-year-long data sets of monthly recruitment of intertidal mussels (Mytilus spp., Perumytilus purpuratus, Semimytilus algosus, Brachidontes granulata) and barnacles (Balanus glandula, Chthamalus dalli, Jehlius cirratus, Notochthamalus scabrosus) at sites spanning > 900 km along the coasts of Oregon-northern California (OR-NCA, 45.47-39.43 degrees N) and central Chile (CC, 29.5-34.65 degrees S). We evaluated four general "null" hypotheses: that despite different phylogenies and great spatial separation of these taxa, their similar life history strategies and environmental settings lead to similar patterns of recruitment (1) between hemispheres, (2) in time, (3) in space, and (4) at larger and smaller spatial scales. Hypothesis 1 was rejected: along the OR-NCA coast, rates of recruitment were between two and three orders of magnitude higher, and patterns of seasonality were generally stronger and more coherent across space and time than along CC. Surprisingly, however, further analysis revealed regularities in both time and space for all species, supporting hypotheses 2 and 3. Temporal decorrelation scales were 1-3 months, and characteristic spatial scales of recruitment were approximately 250 km. Contrary to hypothesis 4, for the ecologically dominant species in both hemispheres, recruitment was remarkably persistent at larger mesoscales (kilometers) but was highly stochastic at smaller microscales (meters). Across species, increased recruitment variation at large scales was positively associated with increased persistence. Our results have several implications. Although the two regions span distinct latitudinal ranges, potential forcing processes behind these patterns include similar large-scale climates and topographically locked hydrographic features, such as upwelling. Further, spatial persistence of the recruitment patterns of most species at the mesoscale supports the view that marine protected areas can be powerful conservation and management tools. Finally, persistent and yet contrasting spatial patterns of recruitment among competing species suggest that recent metacommunity models might provide useful representations of the mechanisms involved in species coexistence.  相似文献

The intertidal isopods Gnorimosphaeroma oregonensis oregonensis (Dana) and Exosphaeroma amplicauda (Stimpson) are shown to have differing preferences for substratum particle-size categories. In field sampling, 80.9% of the total number of G. oregonensis oregonensis taken were present on substrata falling within a ?-4.2 to-3.8 diameter size-range, while 60.0% of E. amplicauda occupied the range ?-2.5 to-2.1. These relationships changed upon laboratory manipulation of density ratios, and suggest competitive interaction: when E. amplicauda is tested alone, the resultant preference assumes a greater niche breadth and overlap to that of the field. Introduction of G. oregonensis oregonensis produces a displacement of E. amplicauda, the degree being dependent upon their relative numerical strength. With an experimental ratio of 3:1 (G. oregonensis:E. amplicauda) there is a simulation of field densities, and the laboratory results approximate more closely the overlap in nature.  相似文献

Chronologies are developed from the otolith growth-increment widths of adult rock flathead (Platycephalus laevigatus) and longhead flathead (Leviprora inops) collected from three inter-connected embayments in temperate south-western Australia. Marginal increment trends on otoliths, in combination with the dendrochronological technique of crossdating, provide strong evidence that an opaque zone is formed annually in the otoliths of both species. Increment widths between opaque zones in the otoliths of individuals of P. laevigatus (maximum age 20 years) and L. inops (maximum age 21 years) were synchronised within and between species. The correlation between the two master otolith chronologies, i.e. mean standardised increment width for each year, was highly significant (P < 0.01). The master otolith chronology for each species was positively correlated with mean sea surface temperatures from 1 July to 30 June, which encompassed the austral summer when growth is typically greatest, and with mean monthly sea surface temperature between September and March. Leeuwin Current strength, which influences the biotic characteristics of some marine species on the south coast, has little influence on the pattern of otolith growth, presumably because the inter-connected embayments from which fish were obtained were partially enclosed. On the basis of the above data and the geographical distributions of P. laevigatus and L. inops, it is proposed that, while both species would grow faster with increasing temperature, the temperatures on the south coast are closer to the optimum for the former species.  相似文献

A one-year study of breeding in the two intertidal hermit crabs Clibanarius chapini Schmitt and C. senegalensis Chevreux and Bouvier showed that both species maintain a high reproductive activity throughout the year. Brief low reproductive activities, found in both species, occurred in different months: C. chapini in November, C. senegalensis in May. While these drops cannot be attributed to any recognisable environmental factor, it is suggested that such pattern may result from competition between the two species. Sex-ratio studies indicated slightly more females than males in both species. The maximal size attained by males of both species is considerably greater than that of the females; in C. senegalensis this is very marked. It is suggested that it may be selectively advantageous for a female to attain a smaller maximal size since her brood must also be accomodated within the shell. As expected for continuously breeding species, recruitment of young into the population is also continuous.  相似文献

During 1978 and 1979 specimens of Nephtys hombergii in the River Tyne estuary (North East England) became gravid during the winter but did not spawn in the spring breeding season; instead their gametes were resorbed. The drastic effects of these spawning failures were apparent in the population structure in 1980, when the 1978 and 1979 year-classes were shown to be virtually absent, by the size of the individuals in the population and the numbers of growth lines in their jaws. The population structure in 1975, by contrast, indicated that recruitment during the preceding 4 to 5 yr had been good. Spawning was also effective in 1980, and an 0 group was detected in August 1980. Comparable data has been obtained for N. caeca, which occurs in the same beach. It shows that recruitment of this species during 1976–1980 was consistently good, whereas analysis of the age-class frequencies suggests that recruitment of N. caeca was poor in 1973 and 1975. The dominance relationship of the two species in the beach has been reversed during the period 1975–1980. It is suggested that the sympatric distribution of the two species is maintained in part by periodic reproductive failure. The causes of this are not yet known; possible reasons, including the extremely cold conditions experienced in 1978–1979 are discussed. The difference in frequency of the 1978, 1979 and 1980 year classes will now permit a rigorous evaluation of the relationship between the number of growth lines in the jaws and age in N. hombergii.  相似文献

An intertidal creek in North Inlet Estuary, South Carolina, USA, was sampled monthly for 1 year to determine the occurrence, abundance and diversity of fish species. Sampling was so conducted as to reduce sampling bias to a minimum and all individuals caught were weighed and measured. A total of 16,611 individuals weighing 202.45 kg and comprising 51 species and 25 families of fish was collected. Three diversity indices were calculated for species number. Analysis of variance revealed that season had a highly significant effect on all indices and the number of species, but had no effect on the number of individuals caught.This work was supported by the Belle W. The biological effects of a low-volume domestic sewage discharge were studied near Wilson Cove, San Clemente Island, California (USA), from February to June, 1972. There were fewer species and less cover near the outfall (7 macro-invertebrates, 17.6%; 13 macrophytes, 91.7%) than in nearby “unpolluted” control areas (9 macroinvertebrates, 9.2%; 30 macrophytes, 103.4%). The outfall biota was less diverse than that of the controls, as shown by 5 different diversity indices. A great reduction in community stratification (spatial heterogeneity) and, hence, community complexity occurred near the outfall; this reduction in stratification was primarilly due to the absence of Egregia laevigata, Halidrys dioica, Sargassum agardhianum and Phyllospadix torreyi. These were replaced in the mid-intertidal near the outfall by a low turf of blue-green algae, Ulva californica, Gelidium pusillum and small Pterocladia capillacea, and in the lower intertidal by Serpulorbis squamigerus covered with Corallina officinalis Var. chilensis. A statistically-based determination of assemblages or groups of organisms (i.e., cluster analysis) revealed 3 discrete outfall and 3 discrete control area groups; 3 assemblages contained samples from both areas. The distributional patterns of these groups indicate that near the outfall the degree of dilution of discharged sewage is more important in regulating zonation than is tidal height. The enhancement of the suspension feeder Serpulorbis squamigerus and the omnivores Ligia occidentalis, Pachygrapsus crassipes and Anthopleura elegantissima in the outer fringe of the outfall plume hypothetically is due to their ability to utilize sewage as a food source. A critical effect of the outfall may be to decrease environmental stability thereby favoring rapid-colonizers and more sewage-tolerant organisms. The outfall macrophytes were characterized by relatively higher net primary productivities, smaller growth forms, simpler and shorter life histories, and most were components of early successional stages.  相似文献

We studied the effects of grazing by two species of sea urchins on two species of kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera and Pterygophora californica) in the San Onofre kelp bed in southern California from 1978 through 1981. Both red sea urchins, Strongylocentrotus franciscanus, and white sea urchins, Lytechinus anamesus, were abundant and lived in aggregations. The purple sea urchin (S. purpuratus) was rare at the study site and was not studied. The aggregations of red urchins were either relatively small and stationary (for over 3 yr) or relatively large and motile (advancing at about 2 m mo–1). Both stationary and moving aggregations were observed at the same time, and within 100 m of one another. Stationary aggregations of red urchins probably subsisted mainly on drift kelp and had no effect on kelp recruitment or on adult kelp abundance. In contrast, red sea urchins in large, motile aggregations or fronts ate almost all the macroalgae in their path. The condition of their gonalds indicated that red urchins in fronts were starved relative to red urchins in the small, stationary aggregations. Large, motile aggregations developed after 2 yr of declining kelp abundance (probably due largely to storms). We propose that a scarcity of drift algae for food results in a change in the behavior pattern of the red urchins and thus leads to the formation of large, motile aggregations. The aggregations of white urchins, which occurred along the offshore margin of the kelp bed, were large, but relatively stationary. The white urchins rarely ate adult kelps, but grazed extensively on early developmental stages of kelps and evidently prevented seaward expansion of the bed. Some of the effets of dieldrin on the development of two species of crabs, Leptodius floridanus (Rathbun) and Panopeus herbstii (Milne-Edwards), were studied. It was found that the larvae of neither species were able to complete their development at 10 ppb dieldrin or higher in seawater. Groups of L. floridanus larvae reared in 1 ppb dieldrin in seawater had a 15 to 27% higher mortality during development to the postlarval stage than controls. The highest mortality occurred during the first zoeal stage. The time of development to the megalopal stage was as much as 11.4% longer among larvae reared in 1 ppb than among controls. The survival of L. floridanus larvae was not affected by 0.5 ppb dieldrin in seawater. The survival of P. herbstii larvae to the first crab stage was not affected by 1 ppb dieldrin in seawater at 28.5 °C, 30%.S. It was concluded that a comprehensive study of the toxicity of a given pesticide to all stages in the life cycle of a species is necessary to give even an incomplete idea of how the pesticide might affect the animal in its natural environment.  相似文献

The Kittlitz's Murrelet (Brachyramphus brevirostris) is a rare, non-colonial seabird often associated with tidewater glaciers and a recent candidate for listing under the Endangered Species Act. We estimated abundance of Kittlitz's Murrelets across space and time from at-sea surveys along the coast of Alaska (USA) and then used these data to develop spatial models to describe abundance patterns and identify environmental factors affecting abundance. Over a five-week period in the summer of 2005, we recorded 794 Kittlitz's Murrelets, 16 Marbled Murrelets (B. marmoratus), and 70 unidentified murrelets. The overall population estimate (N, mean +/- SE) during the peak period (3-9 July) was 1317 +/- 294 birds, decreasing to 68 +/- 37 by the last survey period (31 July-6 August). Density of Kittlitz's Murrelets was highest in pelagic waters of Taan Fjord (18.6 +/- 7.8 birds/km2, mean +/- SE) during 10-16 July. Spatial models identified consistent "hotspots" of Kittlitz's Murrelets, including several small areas where high densities of murrelets were found throughout the survey period. Of the explanatory variables that we evaluated, tidal current strength influenced murrelet abundance most consistently, with higher abundance associated with strong tidal currents. Simulations based on the empirically derived estimates of variation demonstrated that spatial variation strongly influenced power to detect trend, although power changed little across the threefold difference in the coefficient of variation on detection probability. We include recommendations for monitoring Kittlitz's Murrelets (or other marine species) when there is a high degree of uncertainty about factors affecting abundance, especially spatial variability.  相似文献

The developmental stages from megalopa to third crab of the blue crab Callinectes sapidus Rathbun were tested in 12 combinations of cadmium (0, 50, and 150 ppb) and salinity (10, 20, 30, and 40) at 25°C. A reduction in survival and a significant delay in development from megalopa to third crab occurred within each salinity regime in 50 ppb compared with the control. Comparison of the delay in development within each salinity regime revealed that the sublethal effect of cadmium was most pronounced in the salinities normally preferred by C. sapidus. A similar comparison within each cadmium concentration, however, showed that the developmental time from megalopa to third crab was approximately the same irrespective of salinity. The developmental stages from hatch to first crab of the mud-crab Rhithropanopeus harrisii (Gould) were examined in 63 combinations of cadmium (0, 50, and 150 ppb), salinity (10, 20, and 30), constant temperature (20°, 25°, 30°, and 35°C) and cycling temperature (20° to 25°C, 25° to 30°C, and 30° to 35°C). The results indicated that cycling temperatures may have a stimulating effect on survival of the larvae compared to constant temperatures, both in the presence and in the absence of cadmium. Effects of cadmium and salinity and their interaction on the survival of the larvae from zoeae to megalopa were documented at most of the temperatures by analyses of variance. The zoeal larvae were more susceptible to cadmium than the megalopa. Effects of different combinations of cadmium and salinity on the duration of larval development were assessed by a t-test.  相似文献

The population dynamics of small tiger prawns (Penaeus esculentus and P. semisulcatus) were studied at three sites around north-western Groote Eylandt, Gulf of Carpentaria, Australia, between August 1983 and August 1984. Seagrasses typical of open-coastline, reef-flat and river-mouth communities were found in the shallow depths (2.5 m) at these sites. The temperature and salinity of the bottom waters did not differ among the shallowest depths of the three sites and mean values at night ranged from 21.9 to 32.0 °C, and from 30.1 to 37.5% S. Data from fortnightly sampling with beam trawls showed that virtually all post-larvae (90%) were caught in the intertidal and shallow subtidal waters (2.0 m deep). At one site, where the relationship between seagrass biomass, catches and depth could be studied in detail, high catches were confined to seagrass in shallow water, within 200 m of the high-water mark. This was despite the fact that seagrass beds of high biomass (>100 g m-2 between August and February) were found nearby, in only slightly deeper water (2.5 m). It is likely, therefore, that only the seagrass beds in shallow waters of the Gulf of Carpentaria act as important settlement and nursery areas for tiger prawns. In general, catches of tiger prawn postlarvae (both P. esculentus and P. semisulcatus) and juvenile P. esculentus on the seagrass in the shallowest waters at each site were higher in the tropical prewet (October–December) and wet (January–March) seasons than at other times of the year. Juvenile P. semisulcatus catches were highest in the pre-wet season. While seasonal differences accounted for the highest proportion of variation in catches of tiger prawn postlarvae and juvenile P. semisulcatus, site was the most important factor for juvenile P. esculentus. In each season, catches of juvenile P. esculentus were highest in the shallow, open-coastline seagrass, where the biomass of seagrass was highest. The fact that the type of seagrass community appears to be more important to juvenile P. esculentus than to postlarvae, suggests that characteristics of the seagrass community may affect the survival or emigration of postlarval tiger prawns. Few prawns (<10%) from the seagrass communities in shallow waters exceeded 10.5 mm in carapace length. Despite the intensive sampling, growth was difficult to estimate because postlarvae recruited to the seagrass beds over a long period, and the residence times of juveniles in the sampling area were relatively short (8 wk).  相似文献

Abiotic and biotic processes operate at multiple spatial and temporal scales to shape many ecological processes, including species distributions and demography. Current debate about the relative roles of niche-based and stochastic processes in shaping species distributions and community composition reflects, in part, the challenge of understanding how these processes interact across scales. Traditional statistical models that ignore autocorrelation and spatial hierarchies can result in misidentification of important ecological covariates. Here, we demonstrate the utility of a hierarchical modeling framework for testing hypotheses about the importance of abiotic factors at different spatial scales and local spatial autocorrelation for shaping species distributions and abundances. For the two orchid species studied, understory light availability and soil moisture helped to explain patterns of presence and abundance at a microsite scale (<4 m2), while soil organic content was important at a population scale (<400 m2). The inclusion of spatial autocorrelation is shown to alter the magnitude and certainty of estimated relationships between abundance and abiotic variables, and we suggest that such analysis be used more often to explore the relationships between species life histories and distributions. The hierarchical modeling framework is shown to have great potential for elucidating ecological relationships involving abiotic and biotic processes simultaneously at multiple scales.  相似文献

Fiddler crabs consume the surficial microphytobenthos around their burrows during low tide. We studied the spatial and temporal feeding patterns in the species Uca uruguayensis by using sequences of digital pictures of feeding pellets accumulation. Data from 61 crabs, feeding without the interference of neighbors, were fitted to different models using Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian approaches. Initial feeding location was independent from the emergence location, and then, crabs continued holding a main feeding direction (clockwise or counterclockwise), suggesting a systematic mechanism that may avoid feeding over already processed sediment. Crabs used at least half of their potential feeding area, but these areas were heterogeneous. Both sexes developed similar feeding areas; however, females were faster and needed less time to feed than males, suggesting that males are time restricted. Our work also highlights the importance of incorporating other underlying mechanisms of the behavior of species into the study of feeding strategies.  相似文献

Recruitment of the intertidal gastropod Nassarius pauperatus (Lamarck) was estimated annually for more than a decade at three sites in South Australia. Recruitment varied temporally, but was relatively synchronous amongst sites, even though these were at least 10 km apart. The density of recruits at each site was negatively correlated with evaporation and also with several indices of temperature for February. We postulate that either high temperatures or desiccation cause the death of recently settled individuals, which may be unable to avoid these extremes by burrowing deeply into the substratum.  相似文献

We examined seasonal patterns of abundance for the intertidal amphipod Calliopius laeviusculus (Amphipoda: Gammaridae). Amphipods were sampled with an epibenthic sled during the daytime high tide period from 18 May to 8 August 1988. Amphipod density increased from May to June and reached maxima in both late June and early August. Amphipod density was unrelated to any abiotic component measured in the intertidal community. These variables included sampling location, wave height, water column height, water temperature, salinity and cloud cover. Changes in abundance were related with sampling date and with the onset of capelin (Mallotus villosus) spawning activity in the intertidal. Capelin eggs are an important food item for amphipods. The accuracy of density estimates obtained with the epibenthic sled was assessed through comparison with densities obtained with a more efficient quadrat sampler. Sled samples consistently sampled ca. 1% of the amphipod population. We found that a large portion of the amphipod population burrowed into the sediment and was not effectively sampled by the sled. Sled sampler precision was roughly equivalent to that of quadrats with D (precision) ranging from 0.26 to 0.42 for sled samples and D=0.29 for quadrat samples. Although sample collection with the epibenthic sled was achieved more quickly and under a wider range of weather conditions than was possible with the quadrat sampler, the serious underestimate of amphipod density based on sled samples alone indicates that both sled and quadrat samples, obtained in concert, are required to obtain accurate measures of daily variation in C. laeviusculus abundance.Contribution to the program of GIROQ (Groupe interuniversitaire de recherches oceanographique du Quebec)  相似文献
