The turnover time of photosynthetic oxygen production was the same, near 0.5 msec, for the seaweeds Ulva lactuca, Codium fragile, Porphyryaumbilicalis, Chondrus crispus, Champia parvula and Fucus vesiculosis. This turnover time did not change for sun- and shade-adapted U. lactuca and P. umbilicalis. The similarity of these turnover times to those of other algae, higher plants, and cyanobacteria is strong evidence for similarity in the kinetics, and thus for a universal mechanism of photosynthesis. Evolution in the light-gathering apparatus responsible for the color of seaweeds has occurred without variation in the mechanism of photosynthesis. The size of the Emerson-Arnold photosynthetic unit (the ratio of chlorophyll to oxygen formed in a single tumover light flash) in the green seaweeds is about the same as that in algae, i.e., 2000. It is about half this number for the red and brown seaweeds. The different accessory pigments in the latter two groups compensate for the smaller amount of chlorophyll. The size of the unit was independent of sun- and shade-adaptation in U. lactuca, but did increase in shade-adapted P. umbilicalis.  相似文献

In Dictyota dichotoma, as in many other plants, the chromatophores which at low intensities occupy the cell walls perpendicular to the light beam move to the side walls parallel to the light beam if exposed to high light intensities. The aim of this investigation was to find out whether or not the changes from low- to high-intensity arrangement and vice versa function as an active control mechanism to regulate photosynthetic activity in D. dichotoma under the respective light condition. Four different experimental approaches were made: (a) In white and blue light experiments the changes of the transmittance and of the rate of photosynthetic oxygen production in high- and low-intensity arrangement were compared. (b) The kinetics of the depression and recovery of the PS-rates, as well as of the transmittance changes, were determined during high- and low-intensity movement, respectively. (c) Transmittance and PS-rates of thalli under illumination with polarized and unpolarized light of the same intensity (1,000 1x) were compared. (d) PS-rates of thalli after darkening as well as after preirradiation with weak and strong red light, conditions under which the chromatophores occupy the same position in the cells, were measured. In all these experiments the photosynthetic activity was strongly influenced by pre-illumination, but was independent of the respective chromatophore arrangement. This finding was confirmed by experiments with two other algae: (1) In the brown alga Alaria esculenta which does not display light-induced chromatophore displacements and concomitant transmittance changes, pre-irradiation with high light intensities decreases the PS-rates. (2) In the green alga Ulva lactuca, which shows circadian chloroplast movements, the PS-rates depend on the pre-irradiation only, irrespective of the chloroplast position. Thus we may conclude that in these organisms the function of chromatophore displacements is not the regulation of photosynthetic activity. Other ecological functions are discussed.  相似文献

We conducted a study of the relationship between changes in photosynthetic pigment content and water depth in Great Harbor near Woods Hole, Massachusetts, USA, on the green algae Ulva lactuca and Codium fragile and the red algae Porphyra umbilicalis and Chondrus crispus. A calibrated underwater photometer equipped with spectral band filters measured light attenuation by the water column. The depth required for a 10-fold diminution of photon flux was 3.6, 5.3, 6.0 and 6.0 m for red, blue, yellow and green light, respectively. Seaweeds were attached to vertically buoyed lines and left to adapt for 7 days; then, with their positions reversed, they were allowed to readapt for 7 days. All species showed greater photosynthetic pigment content with increased depth. Further, the ratio of phycobiliproteins and chlorophyll b to chlorophyll a increased with depth. Changes in pigment content were reversible and occurred in the absence of cell division. There was a net loss of pigments near the surface (high irradiance), and subsequent synthesis when seaweeds were transferred to a position deep in the water column (low irradiance). In contrast, seaweeds which were found in intertidal habitats changed only their pigment concentration, and not pigment ratio, a phenomena analogous to higher plant sun and shade adaptation. Therefore, seaweeds modify their photon-gathering photosynthetic antennae to ambient light fields in the water column by both intensity adaptation and complementary chromatic adaptation.  相似文献

以渤海2个原油作为研究对象进行自然风化实验,探讨了原油中金刚烷化合物的分布情况及其风化规律.结果表明,经过100 d的室外自然风化,原油中金刚烷的分布已经发生了较大的改变:风化损失程度与金刚烷化合物的沸点有关,风化初期单金刚烷损失严重,风化45 d,单金刚烷完全消失;双金刚烷浓度变化较小,有较好的抗风化稳定性;通过t检验分析,所选取诊断比值中,单金刚烷指标A6、A8、A12和双金刚烷指标A16、A17、A18较为稳定,能很好地指示自然风化20 d内油样的来源;双金刚烷指标A17、A18风化100 d非常稳定,可用于长期自然风化油样来源鉴别,金刚烷化合物诊断比值对于溢油鉴别具有重要的意义.  相似文献

Photosynthesis and transpiration rates of wheat leaves (Triticum aestivum L.) were measured at 30 min intervals under Mediterranean field conditions, using Photosynthesis Monitor system (PM-48M). The dynamics of net photosynthetic rate (P(N)), transpiration rate (E(T)), water use efficiency (WUE), light use efficiency (LUE), stomatal conductance (g(s)), photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), air temperature (T), relative humidity (RH), and atmospheric CO2 concentration (Catm) were quantified at five rainfed wheat sites with the same stages of development (midflowering) along south-to-north and east-to-west transects for eight days in April. Diurnal P(N) (3.6 to 6.6 micromol m(-2) s(-1)), PAR (392 to 564 micromol m2 sec(-1)), LUE (0.006 to 0.015) and WUE (0.0001 to 0.011) did not vary significantly across all five wheat sites (p > 0.05). P(N) and E(T) were strongly coupled and highly correlated with PAR (p < 0.001). Best multiple linear regression (MLR) models accounted for 92% of variations in P(N) as a function of PAR and E(T), and 90% in E(T) as a function of PAR and RH (p < 0.001). P(N) exhibited a peak at mid-morning, and a photosynthetic midday depression under the limiting effects of high evaporative demand. Diurnal variations in WUE and LUE showed a bimodal behavior with the maximum values in early morning and late afternoon. As the impacts of global climate change become increasingly felt, continuous measurements of climate-crop-soil-managementinteractions under natural conditions play a pivotal role not only in exploring changes in ecophysiological properties of strategic crops for food security such as wheat but also in devising preventive and mitigative management practices to ensure sustained agricultural productivity.  相似文献

国家一级濒危植物报春苣苔Primulina tabacum Hance是苦苣苔科多年生草本植物。研究不同生境下报春苣苔在干湿季的光合作用日变化动态及其对环境因子响应,结果表明:旷地午间时段,光合有效辐射(PAR)增加伴随着空气湿度(RH)的显著下降,此时报春苣苔的净光合速率(Pn)因受光抑制和气孔限制的影响而下降。岩洞生境下报春苣苔的Pn没有受到抑制,但其Pn和光合碳水化合物(CH2O)生成速率较低,洞内光照缺乏是限制其光合碳同化的原因之一。3个样地检测的Pn、CH2O产生速率、气孔导度(Gs)、蒸腾速率(Tr)以及Rubisco的Vo/Vc比率等在湿季均优于干季。主成分分析表明叶片Narea与Chl含量、比叶重(LMA)以及气孔密度对光合作用具有显著影响。Pearson相关分析表明不同生境下影响报春苣苔Pn的关键生态因子有所不同,旷地强光环境下过高的叶片水蒸气压亏缺(VPD)和气温(ta)直接限制净光合速率的水平,而在岩洞弱光高湿环境中,PAR则成为Pn的限制因子。同一环境因子在不同生境下对报春苣苔Pn的影响也有所不同:在旷地强光生境下,空气湿度(RH)的适度增加有利于降低过高的VPD,促进气孔开放而提高Pn。而在岩洞低光条件下,过高RH则会使降低VPD而不利于叶片的气体交换,使光合作用受影响。这个结果启示,在进行报春苣苔野外回归栽培时,应该注意PAR和RH等环境因子的控制。  相似文献

Diel photosynthetic production of water-extractable and residual carbohydrates in natural phytoplankton populations was investigated by analyzing monosaccharide components with combined gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and13C tracer methods. The applicability of this technique for measuring the photosynthetic production of natural phytoplankton populations was examined. Phytoplankton was collected in August 1984 from Kinu-ura Bay, Japan, and incubated under natural light and dark conditions for 24 h. Cell density and concentration of chlorophylla increased about four- and three-fold, respectively, during the experimental period. Production of glucose, galactose, mannose, rhamnose, ribose, fucose, xylose and arabinose was measured in the water-extractable and residual carbohydrate fractions of the phytoplankton. Most of the monosaccharides in both fractions were produced the monosaccharides in both fractions were produced mainly during the daytime. Glucose was a major component in the water-extractable carbohydrate fraction produced by the phytoplankton, and decreased markedly at night. Thus, most of the glucose in the water-extractable carbohydrates seemed to be a constituent of the storage glucan of algal cells. Most monosaccharide components of the water-extractable carbohydrate fraction except glucose did not decrease significantly at night. Ribose of the water-extractable carbohydrate fraction was synthesized at a maximum rate in the morning, prior to the other monosaccharide constituents of this fraction. The major monosaccharide constituent in the residual carbohydrate fraction produced by the phytoplankton was glucose, which decreased significantly at night. Diel change in the production of monosaccharide constituents in residual carbohydrates indicated wide variability in the monosaccharide composition of cell-wall material in algae. The ratios of production of water-extractable and residual carbohydrates to POC production ranged from 8.8 to 28% and from 3.7 to 5.9%, respectively, throughout the daytime and nighttime.  相似文献

Photosynthetic responses to irradiance by the photosymbionts of the two Red Sea sponges Theonella swinhoei (Gray) and Clionavastifica (Hancock) growing under dim light conditions were measured in situ (in September 1997) using a newly developed underwater pulse amplitude modulated (PAM) fluorometer. Relative rates of photosynthetic electron transport (ETR) were calculated as the effective quantum yield of photosystem II (Y ) multiplied with the photosynthetic photon flux (PPF). Photosynthesis versus irradiance (P-I ) curves, obtained within minutes, showed that individual specimens of both sponges, growing under very low light conditions, feature lower light saturation points as well as lower maximal ETRs than individuals growing under higher light. Evaluations of such curves using low irradiances of the actinic light source (20 to 130 μmol photons m−2 s−1) showed a general decrease in Y, with a shoulder from the lowest irradiance applied till 20 to 30 μmol photons m−2 s−1. Point measurements yielded ETRs close to what could be estimated from the P-I curves. These point measurements also revealed good correlations between the diurnally changing ambient irradiances (1 to 50 μmol photons m−2 s−1) and average ETR values for both species. Further analysis showed that although Y values varied considerably between the different point measurements, they did not decrease significantly with light under these very low irradiances. Therefore, PPF rather than Y seems to determine the in situ diel photosynthetic performance at the low ambient irradiances experienced by these sponges. Summary. Many aquatic species use chemosensory information to assess predation risk. The cues used in such risk assessment can come either from the predator (predator odour) or from injured prey (alarm cues). The information conveyed through chemicals may, however, be inaccurate both spatially and temporally, as chemicals may persist in the environment long after the predator is gone. Thus, the level of accuracy of the cues for risk assessment may depend on the persistency of the chemicals in the habitat. Here, we investigated the persistency of alarm cues of a larval amphibian, the woodfrog (Rana sylvatica) in a ephemeral pond, their natural habitat. We introduced either alarm cues or control water in enclosed sleeves (~10 L) installed in the pond. The sleeve water was then sampled after 5 min and every two hours for eight hours. We used the behavioural response of woodfrog tadpoles to alarm cues as a bioassay to assess how long the alarm cues persisted in the environment. We found that tadpoles responded with an antipredator response to the pond water containing alarm cues 5 min after the injection of the cues in the sleeves but did not respond to that same pond water after two hours. Our results indicate that biodegradation and/or photodegradation of alarm cues in natural habitats might occur relatively quickly as the loss of a response to the cues in our experiment was independent of a dilution effect. This contrasts with previous laboratory results indicating that chemicals may be active after several hours.  相似文献

Demographic models are powerful tools for making predictions about the relative importance of transitions from one life stage (e.g., seeds) to another (e.g., nonreproductives); however, they have never been used to compare the relative performance of invasive and noninvasive taxa. I use demographic models parameterized from common garden experiments to develop hypotheses about the role of different life stage transitions in determining differences in performance in invasive and noninvasive congeners in the Commelinaceae. I also extended nested life table response experiment (LTRE) analyses to accommodate interactions between nested and unnested factors. Invasive species outperformed their noninvasive congeners, especially under high-nutrient conditions. This difference in performance did not appear to be due to differences in elasticities of vital rates, but rather to differences in the magnitude of stage transitions. Self-compatible invasive species had greater fecundity in high-nutrient environments and a shorter time to first reproduction, and all invasive species had greater vegetative reproduction than their noninvasive congeners. Thus greater opportunism in sexual and asexual reproduction explained the greater performance of invasive species under high-nutrient conditions. Similar common garden experiments could become a useful tool to predict potential invaders from pools of potential introductions. I show that short-term and controlled experiments considering multiple nutrient environments may accurately predict invasiveness of nonnative plant species.  相似文献

We present results of simultaneous measurements of turbulent-dissipation rate, zooplankton vertical distribution and copepod gut pigments in the northern North Sea. Analysis shows that some, but not all, copepods (by species, sex and stage) exhibit significant dependence on turbulence in respect to vertical distribution and feeding rate. Oithona similis (female and copepodite stages) exhibits an avoidance of the surface layer when turbulence is strong there. For the range of turbulence (10−7 to 10−3 m2 s−3) and ambient chlorophyll concentration (0.5–0.8 μg l−1) encountered, Calanus spp. and Metridia lucens exhibited a significant negative response in feeding-rate index with increasing turbulence. The rate of oxygen evolution by the tropical marine cyanobacterium Trichodesmium thiebautii was recorded at different times during the day in samples collected in 1992 from the Bahama Islands and the NE Caribbean Sea. This cyanobacterium is unique in that it is the only non-heterocystous diazotroph capable of N2-fixation in daylight. Oxygen evolution was measured under conditions of natural day/night (LD, N=50), constant light (LL, N=14), and constant dark (DD, N=2×14). Photosynthesis vs intensity (P-I) relationships were calculated at various times of day, and the following parameters were used for further evaluation: photosynthesic capacity (P max, 66 to 91 mg O2 mg chl a -1 h-1), initial slope of the P-I curve (, 0.23 to 0.27), dark respiration (R, 12 to 27 mg O2 mg chl a -1 h-1), and the intensity at which O2 consumption is compensated by O2 production (I c, 78 to 160 Em-2 s-1). All means showed large standard deviations (for some parameters more than 200%). In some cases, these variations could be explained with a sinusoidal 24-h time course, but only the compensation point showed a significant daily variation (p0.001) in both LD and DD. The fact that the time course of I c typical for natural conditions remains rhythmic under constant dark conditions strongly suggests a circadian regulation. Few circadian rhythms have been observed in prokaryotes, and this appears to be the first observation of such a rhythm in a cyanobacterium which fixes N2 in daytime.  相似文献

In outdoor tanks enclosed monocultures of Thalassiosira rotula showed partly synchronized cell divisions during exponential growth. The changes in division activity showed a characteristic frequency, which also could be found for cell length (pervalvar axis) and assimilation rate as well as for concentration changes of dissolved free amino acids (DFAA) and ammonia. Excretion of DFAA occurred preferentially during periods of reduced cell division activity, when assimilation was at a higher level. The concentration of ammonia decreased during these periods. The rates per hour of these parameters showed significant multiple correlations. The release of six individual amino acids (ala, -ala, gly, lys, orn and ser) seemed to be controlled by the physiological status of the diatoms. These amino acids amounted to a portion of about 70–80% of the total DFAA. Uptake and release rates of DFAA nitrogen and ammonia were in the same range with maxima of about 350 ng at nitrogen dm-3 h-1 and litre. These dynamics pointed to strong fluxes of organic bound nitrogen in marine micro-heterotrophs.  相似文献

The conventional treatment method of soybean wastewater is expensive and generates waste sludge that requires further handling. Purple nonsulfur bacteria (PNSB) wastewater treatment is a clean technology and can generate single cell protein while degrading pollutants. A wild strain of PNSB, Rhodobacter sphaeroides Z08, was isolated from local soil and was used to treat soybean wastewater. To develop a cost-effective process, the work was performed under natural conditions without artificial light, aeration, nutrients addition, or pH and temperature adjustment. The results showed that the wild strain Rhodobacter sphaeroides Z08 could grow well under natural conditions. The growth curve showed two quick-growth periods and a turning point. The Z08 treatment of soybean wastewater was zero order reaction and COD reduction was 96% after 10 d. The major byproducts of the process were C2-C5 organic acids, predominantly butyric acid. No alcohol was found in the effluent. The initial COD/bacterial-mass ratio (F/M) had a significant effect on soybean wastewater treatment efficiency. When the initial F/M was lower than 10 mg-COD/mg-bacteria, a sufficient amount of time to achieve 90% of COD reduction was only three days. The Z08 biomass yield was 0.28g·g−1, and the bacterial protein content was 52%.  相似文献

Aerobic nitrogenase activity in the marine non-heterocystous cyanobacterium Trichodesmium spp. NIBB 1067, isolated off the Izu Peninsula, Japan in 1983 and grown under artificial conditions, was assayed by the acetylene reduction method. This strain exhibited acetylene reduction activity under aerobic conditions when cells had been grown in the medium free of combined nitrogen. Activity was markedly enhanced by light, and dependent on the growth phase being higher during the exponential growth phase and lower during the late linear and stationary growth phases. Since typical colony formation occurred during the last growth phase, the present results contradict the idea that N2-fixation depends on colony formation. The photosynthesis inhibitor DCMU at 10-6 M inhibited light-dependent acetylene reduction completely. Acetylene reduction by Trichodesmium spp. was tolerant of O2 as strongly as that in the heterocystous cyanobacteria. Even at a partial pressure of oxygen (pO 2) of 3 atm, the activity still remained as high as half of the maximum. It was almost under anaerobic conditions. Maximum activity was obtained at pO2 of ca. 0.1 atm.  相似文献

Natural capital is complex to value notably because of the high uncertainties surrounding the substitutability of its future ecosystem services. We examine a Lucas economy in which a consumption good is produced by combining different inputs, one of them being an ecosystem service that is partially substitutable with other inputs. The growth rate of these inputs and the elasticity of substitution evolve in a stochastic way. We characterize the socially efficient ecological discount rates that should be used to value future ecosystem services at different time horizons. We show that the inverse of the elasticity of substitution can be interpreted as the CCAPM beta of natural capital. We also show that any increase in risk of this beta reduces the ecological discount rate. If our collective beliefs about the elasticity of substitution of ecosystem services are Gaussian, the ecological discount rates go to minus infinity for finite maturities. In that case, a marginal increase in natural capital has an infinite value. We provide a realistic calibration of the model that is coherent with observed asset prices by using the model of extreme events of Barro (2006). The bliss maturity for infinite discount factors is less than 100 years in this calibration.  相似文献

模拟广东某地区降雨的几种要素,对该地某铀矿区的两种粒径(<0.45 mm和>6 mm)的铀尾矿,分别采用1 h及24 h的初始浸泡时间、pH=3.0及pH=6.0的淋浸剂,以开放体系,进行7周的半动态淋滤实验,初步考察铀尾矿中铀钍的释放规律及其与金属元素Al、K、Mg释放行为的相关性.结果表明:(1)对铀尾矿释放铀能力的影响作用依次为:粒径>pH>浸泡时间;对钍释放能力的影响作用依次为:pH>粒径>浸泡时间.(2)pH、粒径和浸泡时间的改变将影响U与Th、Al、K和Mg的释放相关性.  相似文献

Diurnal variability in chlorophyll fluorescence caused by dynamic irradiance conditions is an important issue when using pulse amplitude modulation fluorometry to measure physiological conditions of plants at the landscape scale. We examined the use of slopes and y-intercepts of diurnal effective photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (PSII) (ΔF/F m′) versus photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) regressions in addition to direct measurements of maximum photochemical efficiencies of PSII (F v/F m) values to assess physiological status of Thalassia testudinum seedlings in a controlled mesocosm study. Seedlings were exposed to two light treatments (full sun and 50–70 % light reduction) and three salinity treatments (20, 35, and 50). Measurements were taken at 0600, 0900, 1200, 1500, 1800, and 2100 hours in order to assess the diurnal variation in photochemical efficiency of PSII and PAR, with measurements at 2100 providing F v/F m. Results indicated significant effects of light and salinity on regression y-intercepts and measured F v/F m values. Shaded seedlings had higher values for both parameters, suggesting low-light acclimation. The highest salinity treatment resulted in significant reductions for both parameters, suggesting stress. Stress was also indicated by significant reductions in both seedling leaf growth and mean differences between seedling leaves and media osmolalities in the hypersaline treatments (152.0 ± 26.4 vs. 630 ± 40.2 mmol kg?1 for the control treatments). Slopes of ΔF/F m′ versus PAR significantly differed with varying light treatments, with full sun seedlings exhibiting shallower slopes than shaded seedlings, indicating higher efficiency of dissipation of excess energy (photoprotection). These experimental results confirm field data suggesting that diurnal ΔF/F m′ versus PAR regressions are responsive to changes in the physiological status of T. testudinum and that the y-intercepts of diurnal regressions may be used as a proxy for F v/F m.  相似文献
