Growth trajectories of individual larvae of Japanese sardine, Sardinops melanostictus, caught in the coastal waters off western Japan were back-calculated from the first feeding stage up to date of capture (approximate
size of 20 to 35 mm total length; TL) based on individually determined allometric relationships between otolith daily ring
radii and fish total lengths. The larvae in January-, February-, and March-hatched cohorts in the coastal waters grew faster
and more uniformly than those in the oceanic waters offshore of the Kuroshio current. Growth trajectories of the three hatch-month
cohorts were similar and could be expressed by the Gompertz model. The inflection points of the growth curves were reached
at 9 to 11 d after hatching, when larvae were 10.8 to 11.8 mm TL. Maximum growth rates at these points were 0.80 to 0.85 mm
d−1. Growth rates gradually declined after the inflection points, and larval TLs converged into the infinite length of 29 to
32 mm, the sizes at which metamorphosis from larvae to juveniles is initiated. This asymptotic growth pattern in the larval
stage resulted in the narrow ranges in TLs in spite of the wide range of ages of the larvae caught by boat seiners in the
coastal waters. Slow growth and therefore long duration of the metamorphosing stage could be influential in determining the
cumulative total mortality in the early life stages of the Japanese sardine.

Microzooplankton grazing activity in the Celtic Sea and Carmarthen Bay in summer 1983 and autumn 1984 was investigated by applying a dilution technique to high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) analysis of photosynthetic pigments in phytoplankton present within natural microplankton communities. Specific grazing rates on phytoplankton, as measured by the utilisation of chlorophyll a, were high and varied seasonally. In surface waters during the autumn, grazing varied between 0.4 d-1 in the bay and 1.0 d-1 in the Celtic Sea, indicating that 30 and 65% of the algal standing stocks, respectively, were grazed daily. Grazing rates by microzooplankton within the thermocline in summer suggest that 13 to 42% of the crop was grazed each day. Microzooplankton showed selection for algae containing chlorophyll b, in spite of a predominance of chlorophyll c within the phytoplankton community. Changes in taxon-specific carotenoids indicated strong selection for peridinin, lutein and alloxanthin and selection against fucoxanthin and diadinoxanthin. This indicates a trophic preference by microzooplankton for dinoflagellates, cryptophytes, chlorophytes and prasinophytes and selection against diatoms, even when the latter group forms the largest crop within the phytoplankton. Interestingly, those algal taxa preferentially grazed also showed the highest specific growth-rates, suggesting a dynamic feed-back between microzooplankton and phytoplankton. Conversion of grazing rates on each pigment into chlorophyll a equivalents suggests firstly, that in only one experiment could all the grazed chlorophyll a be accounted for by the attrition of other chlorophylls and carotenoids, and secondly that in spite of negative selection, a greater mass of diatoms could be grazed by microzooplankton than any other algal taxon. The former may be due either to a fundamental difference in the break-down rates of chlorophyll a compared to other pigments, or to cyanobacteria forming a significant food source for microzooplankton. In either case, chlorophyll a is considered to be a good measure of grazing activity by microzooplankton. 相似文献

Chlorophyll a, primary productivity and grazing by copepods on phytoplankton were measured in the upper water column during the summer
of 1994/1995 at a coastal site near Davis Station, East Antarctica. Chlorophyll a was at a maximum in mid-December, then dropped markedly as the coastal fast ice melted and broke‐out. Phytoplankton biomass
increased again from mid‐ to late‐February. Copepods accounted for at least 65% of zooplankton biomass in the water column
before sea ice break‐out, whereas larval polychaetes and ctenophores dominated after ice break‐out. Oncaeacurvata was the numerically dominant species throughout the study. The highest grazing rate (8.7 mg C␣m−3␣d−1) was recorded on 21 December when O.␣curvata accounted for 64% of the total. Grazing had decreased markedly by 28 December (0.9 mg C m−3 d−1); again O. curvata accounted for over 50% of the total ingested. Copepod grazing increased after ice break-out until the last experiment on
20 February (⋍5 mg C␣m−3␣d−1). The main species responsible for grazing during this period were O. curvata, Oithonasimilis, Calanoidesacutus and unidentified copepod nauplii. It was estimated that copepods removed between 1 and 5% of primary productivity.

Seasonal study of phytoplankton pigments and species at a coastal station off Sydney: Importance of diatoms and the nanoplankton 总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9
G. M. Hallegraeff 《Marine Biology》1981,61(2-3):107-118
Phytoplankton pigments and species were studied at a coastal station off Sydney (New South Wales, Australia) over one annual cycle. Sudden increases in chlorophyll a (up to 280 mg m-2), due to short-lived diatom blooms, were found in May, July, September, January and February. These were superimposed upon background levels of chlorophyll a (20 to 50 mg m-2), due mostly to nanoplankton flagellates, which occurred throughout the year. The nanoplankton (<15 m) accounted for 50 to 80% of the total phytoplankton chlorophyll, except when the diatom peaks occurred (10 to 20%). The annual cycle of populations of 16 dominant species-groups was followed. Possible explanations as to alternation of diatom-dominated and nanoplankton-dominated floras are discussed. Thin-layer chromatography of phytoplankton pigments was used to determine the distribution of algal types, grazing activity, and phytoplankton senescence in the water column. Chlorophyll c and fucoxanthin (diatoms and coccolithophorids) and chlorophyll b (green flagellates) were the major accessory pigments throughout the year, with peridinin (photosynthetic dinoflagellates) being less important. Grazing activity by salps and copepods was apparent from the abundance of the chlorophyll degradation products pheophytin a (20 to 45% of the total chlorophyll a) and pheophorbide a (10 to 30%). Chlorophyllide a (20 to 45%) was associated with blooms of Skeletonema costatum and Chaetoceros spp. Small amounts of other unidentified chlorophyll a derivatives (5 to 20%) were frequently observed. 相似文献

In a subtropical Hawaiian ecosystem, phytoplanton size structure analyses (November–December, 1980) showed that ultraplankton (>3μm), nanoplankton (>20μm) and netplankton (>20μm) accounted for ca. 80, 98, and 2% of total chlorophyll standing stock, respectively, on the basis of chlorophyll. Similar trends were evident, for other biomass indices (e.g. cell numbers, total cell volume, ATP, particulate organic carbon, particulate organic nitrogen). The ultraplankton fraction consisted primarily of small flagellates (1 to 3 μm diam) and coccoid cells (?1 μm diam); the 3 to 20 μm fraction was represented by dinoflagellates, coccolithophores, diatoms, and chrysophytes; and the netplankton fraction consisted principally of dinoflagellates and centric diatoms. Community photosynthesis had a size distribution similar to that of biomass. Sinking rates for the 3 μm, 3 to 20 μm, and >20 μm fractions averaged 0.0, 0.09, and 0.29m d?1, respectively. The absence of measurable sinking rates for the ultraplankton, together with the relative abundance of biomass in this fraction, result in very small phytoplankton losses due to sinking in such subtropical surface waters. 相似文献

Nocturnal synthesis and diurnal degradation of phytoplankton biomass in surface waters 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Natural populations of phytoplankton were collected near the Bay of Bourgneuf, France, in spring 1982, and were subjected to natural surface irradiance outdoors. They exhibited exponential growth on time scales of a week, but significant decreases in biomass indicators such as chlorophyll a and particulate nitrogen were observed during daytime. At night, these decreases were more than compensated by increases in the same biomass variables, which could double over 12 h of darkness. These features are characteristic of phytoplankton populations in surface waters which cannot escape high irradiances, and may be representative of situations in incubation bottles held at fixed depths near the surface. Under such conditions, a decrease in biomass during daytime should not necessarily be interpreted as irreversible damage unless growth measurements are carried out over the following night hours to check for possible recovery. 相似文献

Decomposition of urea in seawater was studied in Mikawa Bay, a shallow eutrophic bay on the southern coast of central Japan. The urea concentration in seawater ranged from 1.3 to 5.9 μg-at. N/1 and comprised 12 to 40% of the dissolved organic nitrogen. Using 14C labelled urea, the rate of CO2 liberation from urea and the incorporation rate of urea carbon into the particulate organic matter were determined. For the surface samples, high rates of CO2 liberation from urea as well as the incorporation of urea carbon into the particulate organic matter were observed in the light, while much lower rates were obtained in the dark. Incubation experiments with exposure to different light intensities revealed that the rate of CO2 liberation from urea and the incorporation of urea carbon into particulate organic matter changed with light intensity, showing a pattern similar to that of photosynthesis. The highest liberation and incorporation rates were observed at 12,000 lux. Incubation in light and in dark produced marked decreases and increases, respectively, in urea and ammonia, while no appreciable changes were observed for nitrate and nitrite. It is suggested that urea decomposition associated with photosynthetic activity of phytoplankton is one of the major processes of urea decomposition, and that it plays a significant role in the nitrogen supply for phytoplankton in coastal waters. 相似文献

The photosynthetic function of phycoerythrin was investigated in the alga Trichodesmium thiebautii from the waters of Kuroshio, Japan. The spectroscopic characteristics of the in vivo and isolated T. thiebautii phycoerythrin pigments are identical, and have 3 absorption bands at 495, 547 and 562 nm. Light at the wavelengths corresponding to each absorption band of phycoerythrin is equally efficient in T. thiebautii photosynthesis, indicating that phycoerythrin is active in trapping light energy for photosynthesis. In the natural habitat, phycoerythrin is considered to be the main photosynthetic pigment in T. thiebautii photosynthesis. 相似文献

The ecological importance of mysid (Crustacea: Mysidacea) populations in coastal food webs is not well understood. Although the 10 or more species of epibenthic mysids found in Clayoquot Sound, BC, Canada, form the primary prey resource for seasonally abundant gray whales (Eschrichtius robustus), little is known about their life history. Here, Holmesmysis sculpta dominates multi-species swarms, however there are several potential routes to this state, one of which is higher embryo production. Reproductive capacity is key to the resiliency of local mysid populations and species diversity, in this study I compare one aspect, brood size for the four most commonly found species, H. sculpta, Neomysis rayii, Exacanthomysis davisi, and Columbiaemysis ignota. The number of embryos per brood was found to vary significantly between species; however, individual length is a stronger determinant of brood size. Here, I report previously unknown life history attributes of coastal mysid species, with important consequences for community structure and local marine food webs. 相似文献

Biological characteristics of daytime surface swarming of Euphausia pacifica were investigated. Swarms in the Sanriku coastal waters consisted almost exclusively of mature individuals and seemed to be related to breeding behavior. Although maturation of ovarian eggs occurred both at the beginning and the end of the swarming period, females with attached spermatophore were most frequent at the end of the period. Since stomachs of swarming individuals were nearly empty throughout this period, swarming behavior was probably not related to feeding. Swarming individuals did not seem to be transported to the surface by vertical water movement caused by tidal streams, because the daily catch per boat did not differ between spring and neap tides. 相似文献

The daily abundance of aloricate ciliates at Lime Cay, Jamaica, a shallow neritic site, ranged from 29 to 118 × 106 m–2 (0.97 to 3.93 × 106 m–3) between November 1985 and November 1986. Biomass was converted to kilojoules (1 kcal=4.1855 kJ) assuming 42% carbon, 20.15 kJ (g dry wt)–1, and 20% cell shrinkage. Biomass ranged from 0.40 to 3.00 kJ m–2 (13.3 to 100 J m–3; 0.28 to 2.08µg C l–1) with an annual mean of 1.11 kJ m–2 (36.8 J m–3; 0.764µg C l–1). Nanociliates (<20µm equivalent spherical diameter, ESD) dominated abundance, but microciliates (> 20µm ESD) dominated biomass.Strombidium, Strobilidium, Tontonia andLaboea species were conspicuous taxa. Annual production estimates of the aloricate assemblage, based on literature growth rates, ranged from 404 kJ m–2 yr–1 (37 J m–3 d–1) to 1614 kJ m–2 yr–1 (147 J m–3 d–1). A compromise estimate of 689 kJ m–2 yr–1 (i.e., 63 J m–3 d–1) is comparable to other estimates from tropical and subtropical regions. A model of annual energy flow through 11 planktonic compartments suggests the total ciliate assemblage (aloricates and tintinnines) to be as productive as metazoan herbivores and metazoan carnivores. 相似文献

Coccolithophores: a major phytoplankton component in mature upwelled waters off the Cape Peninsula,South Africa in March, 1983 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Coccolithophores, together with other phytoplankton, were sampled at ten stations along a transect following the general orientation of the Cape Peninsula upwelling plume in March, 1983. Thirteen coccolithophore species were identified with Emiliania huxleyi dominating the assemblages. Coccolithophores and other microflagellates were more abundant than diatoms along the transect except at one station in mature upwelled water. Very high populations (2 340×103 cells l-1) of coccolithophores were found in mature upwelled water adjacent to the oceanic front. This count is one of the highest counts ever recorded in an upwelling area. The anomalous warm event prior to sampling may have had a residual effect on seeding, contributing towards the predominance of small-celled phytoplankton over chain-forming diatoms. 相似文献

The effect of microalgal strength of adhesion to surfaces was examined with regard to their susceptibility to grazing by Gammarus oceanicus Segerstråle and Calliopius laeviusculus (Krøyer). Observations of the feeding behaviour and two feeding experiments were carried out under laboratory conditions. Naturally attached periphyton (strongly attached cells), homogenized periphyton (loosely attached cells), filtered phytoplankton (unattached cells) and bare surfaces (controls) were randomly located in a grid and offered for grazing to a fixed number of amphipods of each species separately. The number of individuals visiting each type of food presented in the grid was recorded for 24-h periods. The feeding habit of each species, their effect on food distribution and their efficiency at collecting small particles were also recorded. G. oceanicus has a low efficiency at collecting particles and does not select a particular type of food, owing to its feeding habit of indiscriminately resuspending loosely attached particles. C. laeviusculus is a highly efficient and selective grazer, preferring homogenized periphyton and phytoplankton to naturally attached periphyton. For epibenthic diatoms, strong adhesion to surfaces is advantageous to avoid grazers. 相似文献

Phytoplankton xanthophylls in the gut contents of the copepods Calanus pacificus, Corycaeus anglicus, and Paracalanus parvus, collected from 5 stations off San Onofre, California, in June 1982, were measured by reverse phase, high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The dinoflagellate pigment, peridinin, was usually the most abundant xanthophyll in the guts of all three species of copepods. Evidently, feeding was principally on dinoflagellates (which dominated the phytoplankton biomass). The level of feeding activity, rather than the class of phytoplankton ingested, seemed to differentiate the behaviors of the copepods. Xanthophyll content per unit copepod wet weight was higher in Corycaeus anglicus and Paracalanus parvus than in Calanus pacificus. Chlorophyll a fluorescence of the copepod gut contents was measured in conjunction with the analysis of gut xanthophylls. The xanthophyll content of the gut varied directly with the concentration of chlorophyll a in the gut. Xanthophyll content was not related to the concentration of pheopigments in the gut. Apparently, the xanthophylls that were detected were due to the presence of recently ingested phytoplankton biomass. 相似文献

In October 2000, a mass mortality of blacktip sharks (Carcharhinus limbatus) and Atlantic sharpnose sharks (Rhizoprionodon terraenovae) in northwest Florida occurred in conjunction with a Karenia brevis red tide bloom. Before this incident, no information existed on red tide-induced shark mortalities or baseline brevetoxin levels in sharks and rays from red tide-endemic areas. We report here that brevetoxin accumulation in live and red tide-killed elasmobranchs is common during K. brevis blooms and non-bloom periods. Strong relationships were found between the frequency of red tide blooms and the average brevetoxin concentrations in elasmobranch tissues. The presence of brevetoxins in Atlantic coast sharks in the absence of documented K. brevis blooms may suggest that blooms are occurring in areas that are not well monitored. Although red tide-related shark mortalities are rarely observed, the presence of brevetoxins in shark embryos raises questions about the effects these toxins may have on the reproductive success of sharks. 相似文献

Phaeocystis pouchetii blooms in the East Frisian coastal waters (German Bight,North Sea) 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
In 1982 and 1983, blooms of the planktonic alga Phaeocystis pouchetii were studied in the East Frisian coastal waters off Norderney, FRG. Morphological variability of the colonies, population development, effects on inorganic nutrient and oxygen budget, and the role in the seasonal plankton bloom sequence were investigated. in both years two separate Ph. pouchetii blooms occurred in late spring and early summer that were formed by the globosa-type exclusively. The pouchetii-type was only present during the interval between the first and second blooms in 1982. Growth conditions for Ph. pouchetii seem to be most favourable after a breakdown of a diatom bloom when the silicate reserves have been exhausted, phosphate concentrations are relatively low, but a rich supply of dissolved inorganic nitrogen is available. Contrary to diatom blooms, Ph. pouchetii blooms result in a high production of particulate organic carbon (POC). Another characteristic is the release of great amounts of dissolved organic substances, which cause extensive sea foam formation during the peaks and the subsequent breakdown of the blooms. Due to increased assimilation during mass development and intense disintegration after the breakdown, variations of the oxygen content of the water are significant. Presumably the intensity of blooms has increased in the past decade as indicated by sea foam formation which has actually been excessive in some years. 相似文献

Temporal succession and spatial segregation of clupeoid larvae in the coastal waters off the Tanshui River Estuary, northern Taiwan 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
In the coastal waters off the Tanshui River Estuary in northern Taiwan, eight species of clupeoid larvae were observed. They
exhibited a distinct temporal succession in association with seasonal temperature changing. The time of peak abundance of
Etrumeus teres was in January, Engraulis japonicus in late April, Sardinella spp. in mid-May, Dussumieria elopsoides in early June, Thryssa dussumieri in late June, Stolephorus insularis in mid-September, Encrasicholina heteroloba in early October and E. punctifer in mid-November. The time intervals of the temporal succession of the fishes were approximately 15 to 25 d in the spring/summer
and 25 to 35 d in the autumn/winter fishing seasons. Also, they showed spatial segregation by distributing in areas with different
water depths: Sardinella spp. at a water depth of 10 to 20 m, T. dussumieri at less than 10 m, E. heteroloba at 20 to 50 m and E. punctifer at 10 to 40 m. The larvae of these sympatric clupeoid species segregated their nursing periods and areas apparently to reduce
competition for habitat and thus to maximize the utilization of resources.

Larval fishes were sampled across six transects perpendicular to a 50 km section of the coast off Sydney, Australia, in April/May and August/September 1990. Samples were collected at the surface and at depth (20 to 30 m) at three locations across each transect; over the 30, 70 and 100 m depth contours. There was a large level of heterogeneity in the horizontal and vertical distributions of most taxa examined, and no general pattern of distribution was evident for the whole assemblage. Classification analyses revealed that the major differences between assemblages were related to depth. Horizontal trends in the distributions of the abundant taxa were evident in the inshore-offshore direction, but not longshore. Seven taxa belonging to the families Gobiidae, Labridae, Sillaginidae, Sparidae, Ambassidae, Clupeidae and Clinidae/Tripterygiidae were most abundant inshore, whereas 4 taxa of the families Cepolidae, Percichthyidae, Cheilodactylidae and Gonorynchidae were generally more abundant offshore and 24 taxa showed no discrete horizontal trends across transects. More taxa and individuals were generally caught at depth than at the surface and this was evident across all transects. Twenty taxa were more numerous at depth, whereas 4 taxa, the Cheilodactylidae, Gonorynchidae, Mullidae and Scorpididae, were most abundant at the surface and 11 taxa showed no difference in densities between depths. Ontogenetic differences in the distributions of some larvae were evident. The mean size of larval Liza argentea (Mulgilidae) caught was greater offshore than inshore, and greater at the surface than at depth. In contrast, larger Pseudocaranx dentex (Carangidae) occurred in greater numbers at depth than at the surface. The data emphasise that the assemblages of larval fishes in coastal waters off central New South Wales cannot be modelled as a single unit, which concurs with the findings in other temperate and tropical vaters. Furthermore, the data denote the need to spatially stratify sampling in these waters in order to assess seasonal changes in these assemblages. 相似文献

The giant clam Tridacna crocea harbors in the mantle tissue symbiotic microalgae commonly called zooxanthellae. Isolated zooxanthellae release glycerol
into the medium in the presence of mantle tissue homogenate (MH), but it is not clear whether the cells do so in situ. In
order to determine the photosynthetic products released by zooxanthellae in the mantle of the giant clam we traced photosynthetic
fixation products from 13C- and 14C-bicarbonate both in the clam and in isolated zooxanthellae (IZ) in the presence or absence of MH. After 15 min incubation
in the absence of MH the IZ released less than 0.6% of the fixed labeled carbon, mainly as glucose. The major intracellular
photosynthates were neutral lipids, which constituted 20 to 40% of the total extractable 14C. In the presence of MH, the IZ released up to 5.6% of the total fixed 14C, mostly as glycerol, and the major intracellular photosynthate was glucose. In an intact clam incubated in sea water containing
14C-bicarbonate, 46 to 80% of the fixed 14C was translocated from the zooxanthellae to the host tissues. Most of the 14C in the hemolymph, in the isolated zooxanthellae and in intact mantle tissue (containing zooxanthellae) was recovered as
glucose. No 14C-glycerol was detected in the mantle after 1 to 30 min incubation, and, even after 60 min, far less 14C-glycerol was synthesized than by IZ in the presence of MH. The possibility that in clam tissue glycerol is converted to
glucose was examined by tracing the labeled carbon from 14C-glycerol injected into the adductor muscle. After 5 min incubation, no labeled glucose was found in the hemolymph, but after
60 min, some 20% was found as glucose. Thin slices containing zooxanthellae, cut from the surface of the mantle, fixed inorganic
carbon supplied as NaH14CO3 in the medium and mainly released 14C-glucose. The addition of MH to the surrounding medium did not affect the release rate or form of release product. When the
slices were cut into smaller pieces, however, the ratio of glycerol to glucose in the release product increased. These results
indicate that in the presence of MH the metabolism of isolated zooxan- thellae was different from that of zooxanthellae in
the mantle. In the presence of MH, isolated zooxanthellae release mostly glycerol, whereas in the mantle they release glucose.

To determine the level of total hydrocarbon concentrations (THCs) along the eastern coastal regions of Peninsular Malaysia, samples of subsurface seawater (1 m) and surface sediments were collected from several sampling stations between June and August 1993. THCs in seawater and sediments as determined by fluorescence spectroscopy ranged from 1.4 to 21.8 µg L-1 (Seligi crude oil equivalents) and from 0.79 to 20.0 mg kg-1 (dry weight Seligi crude oil equivalents) respectively. In comparison to results obtained in similar surveys in Malaysian waters, the levels of THCs found in the present study were significantly lower indicating lower hydrocarbon contamination in the area studied. 相似文献
