General effects of climate change on Arctic fishes and fish populations   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Projected shifts in climate forcing variables such as temperature and precipitation are of great relevance to arctic freshwater ecosystems and biota. These will result in many direct and indirect effects upon the ecosystems and fish present therein. Shifts projected for fish populations will range from positive to negative in overall effect, differ among species and also among populations within species depending upon their biology and tolerances, and will be integrated by the fish within their local aquascapes. This results in a wide range of future possibilities for arctic freshwater and diadromous fishes. Owing to a dearth of basic knowledge regarding fish biology and habitat interactions in the north, complicated by scaling issues and uncertainty in future climate projections, only qualitative scenarios can be developed in most cases. This limits preparedness to meet challenges of climate change in the Arctic with respect to fish and fisheries.  相似文献

Substantial concentrations of graphitic carbon and its associated large optical absorption coefficient are observed in the Arctic. The graphitic content shows a dramatic increase from late fall to early spring, reaching levels that are comparable to those found in urban environments (i.e., the peak values in February are only about a factor of 10 less than the average levels found in New York City and a factor of three less than those found in Berkeley, California, and Denver, Colorado). If one ignores the possible contribution of natural burning processes which are expected to be small during this time of the year in the northern hemisphere, this graphitic component can be attributed directly to anthropogenic activity.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine whether vertebrate-type oestrogens have ecotoxicological effects on a crustacean species. The effects of 17beta-oestradiol (E2), diethylstilbestrol (DES), bisphenol A (BPA) and 4-nonylphenol (4-NP) on the freshwater invertebrate Daphnia magna were assessed over first and second generations. The acute EC(50) 48 h, based on immobilisation, for E2, DES, BPA and 4-NP were 2.87 mg/l, 1.55 mg/l, 7.75 mg/l and 0.13 mg/l, respectively. The impact of the test chemicals on moulting frequency was also assessed. The EC(50) 48 h, based on the inhibition of moult number for E2, DES and 4-NP were 2.04 mg/l, 1.87 mg/l and 0.14 mg/l, respectively. BPA was not observed to impact the moulting frequency of D. magna at concentrations tested. In a series of separate studies, the effects of the four selected test compounds on the survival, moulting frequency and reproduction of first and second generational D. magna were assessed over a period of 21 d. Exposure of D. magna to 4-NP decreased the number of offspring produced in both first and second generation testing. DES proved to have no significant (p0.05) inhibition of fecundity in first generation but when second generation daphnids were exposed to DES, a significant (p0.05) reduction in the number of offspring was recorded. When D. magna were exposed to E2 or BPA, no statistically significant (p0.05) inhibition in the number of moults or offspring produced was observed.  相似文献

The effect of four triazinyl-sulfonylurea herbicides (cinosulfuron, prosulfuron, thifensulfuron methyl, triasulfuron) on soil microbial biomass, soil respiration, metabolic activity, metabolic quotient, and some enzymatic activities (acid and alkaline phosphatase, β-glucosidase, arylsulphatase, and fluorescein diacetate hydrolysis) were monitored under controlled conditions over 30 days. The herbicides were applied at the normal field dose (FD) and at ten-fold (10 FD) the field dose, in order to mimic a long term toxic effect. The measured soil microbial parameters showed that the FD had slight effects on soil microflora, while at 10 FD the tested herbicides exerted a stronger detrimental effect on soil microbial biomass and its biochemical activities.  相似文献

Eight hundred submicrometer and 516 large and giant (> 1 μm) particles collected by cascade impactor from Arctic haze aerosol were characterized using analytical electron microscopy. Selected particles were also analyzed using laser microprobe mass analysis. Over 97 percent of the analyzed submicrometer particles showed high sulfate concentrations, and a large majority (96 percent) of these appeared to have been collected directly as H2SO4 droplets. Anthropogenic particles, including graphitic carbon (soot), coal and oil fly ash, and Cu-Ni smelter emissions were observed in the coarser particle fraction. Air trajectories indicate much of the aerosol passed over industrialized regions in the U.S.S.R.  相似文献

The ability to forecast sea ice (both extent and thickness) and weather conditions are the major factors when it comes to safe marine transportation in the Arctic Ocean. This paper presents findings focusing on sea ice and weather prediction in the Arctic Ocean for navigation purposes, in particular along the Northeast Passage. Based on comparison with the observed sea ice concentrations for validation, the best performing Earth system models from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) program (CMIP5—Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 5) were selected to provide ranges of potential future sea ice conditions. Our results showed that, despite a general tendency toward less sea ice cover in summer, internal variability will still be large and shipping along the Northeast Passage might still be hampered by sea ice blocking narrow passages. This will make sea ice forecasts on shorter time and space scales and Arctic weather prediction even more important.  相似文献

Despite their generally isolated geographic locations, the freshwaters of the north are subjected to a wide spectrum of environmental stressors. High-latitude regions are especially sensitive to the effects of recent climatic warming, which have already resulted in marked regime shifts in the biological communities of many Arctic lakes and ponds. Important drivers of these limnological changes have included changes in the amount and duration of snow and ice cover, and, for rivers and lakes in their deltas, the frequency and extent of spring floods. Other important climate-related shifts include alterations in evaporation and precipitation ratios, marked changes in the quality and quantity of lake and river water inflows due to accelerated glacier and permafrost melting, and declining percentages of precipitation that falls as snow. The depletion of stratospheric ozone over the north, together with the clarity of many Arctic lakes, renders them especially susceptible to damage from ultraviolet radiation. In addition, the long-range atmospheric transport of pollutants, coupled with the focusing effects of contaminant transport from biological vectors to some local ecosystems (e.g., salmon nursery lakes, ponds draining seabird colonies) and biomagnification in long food chains, have led to elevated concentrations of many persistent organic pollutants (e.g., insecticides, which have never been used in Arctic regions) and other pollutants (e.g., mercury). Rapid development of gas and oil pipelines, mining for diamonds and metals, increases in human populations, and the development of all-season roads, seaports, and hydroelectric dams will stress northern aquatic ecosystems. The cumulative effects of these stresses will be far more serious than those caused by changing climate alone.  相似文献

The Arctic marine ecosystem contains multiple elements that present alternative states. The most obvious of which is an Arctic Ocean largely covered by an ice sheet in summer versus one largely devoid of such cover. Ecosystems under pressure typically shift between such alternative states in an abrupt, rather than smooth manner, with the level of forcing required for shifting this status termed threshold or tipping point. Loss of Arctic ice due to anthropogenic climate change is accelerating, with the extent of Arctic sea ice displaying increased variance at present, a leading indicator of the proximity of a possible tipping point. Reduced ice extent is expected, in turn, to trigger a number of additional tipping elements, physical, chemical, and biological, in motion, with potentially large impacts on the Arctic marine ecosystem.  相似文献

Atmospheric aerosol samples have been collected through a year at five locations in Greenland. The samples have been analyzed by PIXE to determine the elemental composition of the Arctic aerosol. The results for one of the stations are described in detail and related to those obtained at the other sites.Annual and monthly geometric means of the concentrations in the aerosol of the elements Al, Si, S, Cl, K, Ca, Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Br, Sr and Pb are reported. The results have been subjected to factor analyses, which show that the Arctic aerosol can be considered to be composed of at most five different components, the characteristics of which are described. The components consist of three different anthropogenic and a crustal component and, in addition, a sea salt component at sites exposed to open seas within mesoscale distances.Possible origins of the various components are discussed in view of the seasonal variations of the factor estimates, their statistical independence, and their relation to a selection of synoptic situations. It is concluded that the high Arctic troposphere in winter constitutes a well mixed aerosol reservoir which in most cases masks the origins in distant source areas.  相似文献

The essential oils from leaves of Schinus molle var. areira, Aloysia citriodora, Origanum vulgare and Thymus vulgaris have showed potential as phytoinsecticides against the green stink bug, Nezara viridula. In this work were evaluated their toxicological and behavioral effects on the parasitoid Trissolcus basalis, a biological control agent of this pest insect. Essential oils were obtained via hydrodestillation from fresh leaves. Insecticide activity in T. basalis females was evaluated in direct contact and fumigation bioassays. Behavioral effects were evaluated in olfactometer bioassays. To evaluate the residual toxicity, females of the parasitoids were exposed to oil residues; in these insects, the sublethal effects were evaluated (potential parasitism and survivorship of immature stages). The essential oils from O. vulgare and T. vulgaris proved to be highly selective when used as fumigant and did not change parasitoid behavior. After one week, the residues of these oils were harmless and did not show sublethal effects against T. basalis. According with these results, essential oils have potential applications for the integrated management of N. viridula.  相似文献

Novel communities will be formed as species with a variety of dispersal abilities and environmental tolerances respond individually to climate change. Thus, models projecting future species distributions must account for species interactions and differential dispersal abilities. We developed a species distribution model for Arctic char Salvelinus alpinus, a freshwater fish that is sensitive both to warm temperatures and to species interactions. A logistic regression model using lake area, mean annual air temperature (1961-1990), pike Esox lucius and brown trout Salmo trutta occurrence correctly classified 95?% of 467 Swedish lakes. We predicted that Arctic char will lose 73?% of its range in Sweden by 2100. Predicted extinctions could be attributed both to simulated temperature increases and to projected pike invasions. The Swedish mountains will continue to provide refugia for Arctic char in the future and should be the focus of conservation efforts for this highly valued fish.  相似文献

滇池疏浚底泥富含有机质和N、P等营养成分,农用可提高土壤保水肥能力,有利于植物生长发育,但是存在重金属污染问题。通过盆栽及田间实验,对生菜、白菜、棒菜和萝卜4种蔬菜施用疏浚底泥作为有机肥进行种植,分析疏浚底泥农用后,其重金属含量对蔬菜的影响,并对其进行风险评价。结果表明,盆栽实验中,应将底泥的施用量控制在5%(0.05 kg·kg-1)以内。田间实验中,叶菜类蔬菜种植应将底泥的施用量控制在1.6 kg·m-2以下,块茎类蔬菜种植应将底泥的施用量控制在2.4 kg·m-2以下。风险评价采用富集系数(BCF),以及内梅罗污染指数。盆栽实验中叶菜类蔬菜BCF均为Cd >Pb >Zn >Cu,而块茎类组分BCF均为Cd >Zn >Pb >Cu;田间实验中叶菜类蔬菜BCF均为Zn >Cd >Pb >Cu,茎块类蔬菜BCF为Zn >Cd >Cu >Pb。化学致癌物Cd引起的平均健康风险均低于国际辐射防护委员会(ICRP)推荐的最大的终生可接受风险水平;而非化学致癌物Pb、Zn、Cu引起的健康风险以Zn最大,Pb次之,Cu最小,且所有非致癌物健康风险均远低于英国皇家协会、瑞典环境保护局及荷兰建设环境部等推荐的终生可接受风险水平。  相似文献

Arctic fox (Alopex lagopus) is a circumpolar species distributed across northern Canada and Alaska. Arctic fox muscle and liver were collected at Barrow, AK, USA (n=18), Holman, NT, Canada (n=20), and Arviat, NU, Canada (n=20) to elucidate the feeding ecology of this species and relate these findings to body residue patterns of organochlorine contaminants (OCs). Stable carbon (delta 13C) and nitrogen (delta 15N) isotope analyses of Arctic fox muscle indicated that trophic position (estimated by delta 15N) is positively correlated with increasing delta 13C values, suggesting that Arctic fox with a predominantly marine-based foraging strategy occupy a higher trophic level than individuals mostly feeding from a terrestrial-based carbon source. At all sites, the rank order for OC groups in muscle was polychlorinated biphenyls (Sigma PCB) > chlordane-related compounds (Sigma CHLOR) > hexachlorocyclohexane (Sigma HCH) > total toxaphene (TOX) > or = chlorobenzenes (Sigma ClBz) > DDT-related isomers (Sigma DDT). In liver, Sigma CHLOR was the most abundant OC group, followed by Sigma PCB > TOX > Sigma HCH > Sigma ClBz > Sigma DDT. The most abundant OC analytes detected from Arctic fox muscle and liver were oxychlordane, PCB-153, and PCB-180. The comparison of delta 15N with OC concentrations indicated that relative trophic position might not accurately predict OC bioaccumulation in Arctic fox. The bioaccumulation pattern of OCs in the Arctic fox is similar to the polar bear. While Sigma PCB concentrations were highly variable, concentrations in the Arctic fox were generally below those associated with the toxicological endpoints for adverse effects on mammalian reproduction. Further research is required to properly elucidate the potential health impacts to this species from exposure to OCs.  相似文献

Interacting forces of climate change and globalization are transforming the Arctic. Triggered by a non-linear shift in sea ice, this transformation has unleashed mounting interest in opportunities to exploit the region’s natural resources as well as growing concern about environmental, economic, and political issues associated with such efforts. This article addresses the implications of this transformation for governance, identifies limitations of existing arrangements, and explores changes needed to meet new demands. It advocates the development of an Arctic regime complex featuring flexibility across issues and adaptability over time along with an enhanced role for the Arctic Council both in conducting policy-relevant assessments and in promoting synergy in interactions among the elements of the emerging Arctic regime complex. The emphasis throughout is on maximizing the fit between the socioecological features of the Arctic and the character of the governance arrangements needed to steer the Arctic toward a sustainable future.  相似文献

The Arctic Ocean is undergoing rapid change: sea ice is being lost, waters are warming, coastlines are eroding, species are moving into new areas, and more. This paper explores the many ways that a changing Arctic Ocean affects societies in the Arctic and around the world. In the Arctic, Indigenous Peoples are again seeing their food security threatened and cultural continuity in danger of disruption. Resource development is increasing as is interest in tourism and possibilities for trans-Arctic maritime trade, creating new opportunities and also new stresses. Beyond the Arctic, changes in sea ice affect mid-latitude weather, and Arctic economic opportunities may re-shape commodities and transportation markets. Rising interest in the Arctic is also raising geopolitical tensions about the region. What happens next depends in large part on the choices made within and beyond the Arctic concerning global climate change and industrial policies and Arctic ecosystems and cultures.  相似文献

A field evaluation between two annular denuder configurations was conducted during the spring of 2003 in the marine Arctic at Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard. The IIA annular denuder system (ADS) employed a series of five single-channel annular denuders, a cyclone and a filter pack to discriminate between gas and aerosol species, while the EPA-Versatile Air Pollution Sampler (VAPS) configuration used a single multi-channel annular denuder to protect the integrity of PM2.5 sample filters by collecting acidic gases. We compared the concentrations of gaseous nitric acid (HNO3), nitrous acid (HONO), sulfur dioxide (SO2) and hydrochloric acid (HCl) measured by the two systems. Results for HNO3 and SO2 suggested losses of gas phase species within the EPA-VAPS inlet surfaces due to low temperatures, high relative humidities, and coarse particle sea-salt deposition to the VAPS inlet during sampling. The difference in HNO3 concentrations (55%) between the two data sets might also be due to the reaction between HNO3 and NaCl on inlet surfaces within the EPA-VAPS system. Furthermore, we detected the release of HCl from marine aerosol particles in the EPA-VAPS inlet during sampling contributing to higher observed concentrations. Based on this work we present recommendations on the application of denuder sampling techniques for low-concentration gaseous species in Arctic and remote marine locations to minimize sampling biases. We suggest an annular denuder technique without a large surface area inlet device in order to minimize retention and/or production of gaseous atmospheric pollutants during sampling.  相似文献

Gas–particle interactions of low-molecular-weight dicarboxylic acids were studied at a coastal Arctic site during the summer. Size segregated measurements with a Berner low-pressure impactor displayed up to four modes for ionic compounds: an Aitken mode, an accumulation mode, and two supermicron modes. The lower supermicron mode was ascribed to sea-salt, whereas the upper mode consisted mostly of species associated with continental particles. All four modes could be identified for oxalic acid, with the lower supermicron mode being the dominant. Malonic acid displayed a supermicron mode but was not found in the submicron size range. Succinic acid had an accumulation mode and, in a few samples, a supermicron mode. Glutaric acid displayed sometimes and accumulation mode, sometimes a supermicron mode, and occasionally both. The most probable formation pathway for submicron oxalic and glutaric acid was condensation from the gas phase, even though production in cloud droplets cannot be ruled out either. A slightly different formation pathway may have been important for submicron succinic acid production. Supermicron oxalic acid was probably formed by condensation from the gas-phase, by heterogeneous reactions occurring on the surface of pre-existing sea-salt and continental particles, or in cloud droplets. A larger mass median diameter for supermicron malonic and glutaric acid might be indicative of liquid-phase production in aqueous sea-salt particles. Evidence on possibly substantial sampling artifacts related to measuring dicarboxylic acids using filters were also obtained.  相似文献

Arctic air chemistry observations made in Canada between 1979 and 1984 are discussed. The weekly average concentration of 25 aerosol constituents has been measured routinely at three locations. Anthropogenic pollution typified by SO42− and V has a persistent seasonal cycle. SO42− concentrations are similar at all three locations, although they tend to be somewhat higher at Alert than at Mould Bay and Igloolik. The seasonal variation of an aerosol constituent depends on its source. There are four distinctive seasonal variations for:
  • 1.(i) anthropogenic constituents Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sr, V, Zn, H+, NH4+, SO42−, NO3,
  • 2.(ii) halogens (excepting Cl) Br, I, F,
  • 3.(iii) sea salt elements Na, Mg, Cl and
  • 4.(iv) soil constituents Al, Ba, Ca, Fe and Ti. In the Arctic winter, the mean concentrations of anthropogenic aerosol constituents, except SO42−, are 2–4 times lower than annual mean concentrations in southern Sweden near a major source region. SO42− concentrations are only 30% lower mainly because of production from SO2. Light scattering (bscat) and SO42− observations indicate that the SO42− fraction of the fine particle mass fluctuates between 3 and 65% during the polluted winter months. Daily mean bsact, at Mould Bay that exceeds 50 × 10−6m−1 is associated with air originating from the northwest. The soluble major ion composition of aerosols during winter varies markedly with particle size. H+, NH4+ and SO42− dominate submicrometre particles while sea-salt ions Mg2+, Na+ and Cl predominate in supermicrometre particles. Winter SO2 concentrations at Mould Bay and Igloolik ranged from 0.2 to 1.5 ppb
  • 5.(v). The fraction of airborne S as SO2 ranged from 20 to 90% and peaked in late December-early January. The concentration of total NO3 (0.025–0.090 ppb(v)) is much lower than that of SO42− (0.3–1.2 ppb (v)).
