Larval dispersal and recruitment are important in determining adult coral distribution; however, few studies have been made of coral larval dispersal. This study examined the larval behavior, survivorship competency periods and settlement of two brooding corals, Heliopora coerulea and Pocillopora damicornis, in relation to different potential larval dispersal patterns. We also examined the lipid content of H. coerulea as a means of flotation and a source of energy. Planulae of H. coerulea were on average 3.7 mm in length, lacked zooxanthellae, and were mostly benthic, probably because of restricted movement and low lipid content (54% by dry weight). Planulae of P. damicornis were on average 1.0 mm in length, had zooxanthellae and swam actively. The competency period of H. coerulea was shorter (30 days) than that of P. damicornis (100 days). Forty percent of H. coerulea planulae crawled onto the substrata within 1 h of release, and 47% settled within 6 h. By contrast, fewer than 10% of P. damicornis planulae crawled onto the substrata within the first hour and 25% settled within 6 h of release. The planulae of H. coerulea may have a narrower dispersal range than those of P. damicornis, settling and recruiting near parent colonies. Thus, brooding corals exhibit variations in larval dispersal patterns, which are characterized by their position in the water column and competency periods.  相似文献

We present information on the reproductive biology, population structure, and growth of the brooding Antarctic bivalve Adacnarca nitens Pelseneer 1903, from the Ross Sea, Antarctica. Individuals ranging from 0.85 to 6.00 mm were found attached to a hydrozoan colony. This species shows low fecundity and large egg size, common to other brooding species. The minimum size at which oogenesis was detected was 2.3 mm and the minimum size at which brooding was evident was 3.9 mm. Embryos of a full range of developmental stages were brooded simultaneously in females. The population showed a log–normal distribution and results suggest non-periodic reproduction with continuous embryonic development. The reproductive traits of A. nitens are discussed in the context of circum-Antarctic species distribution and limitations to dispersal in brooding benthic invertebrates.  相似文献

The reproduction of a key intertidal space occupier, the barnacle, Chthamalus malayensis, was examined over a 13-month period. The reproductive cycle of C. malayensis was studied at three shores (Singapore, east and west coast of Malaysia) near the centre of its geographical range. Testes, vesiculae seminales, ovaries and embryos were scored for their stages of development. Although, in general, C. malayensis contained gonads throughout the year, the timing and level of peak development varied between the three shores. Embryos were present throughout the year in west Malaysia but were absent for 4–5 months in east Malaysia (June–August and October) and Singapore (February, April and August). Variations in the reproductive cycles and brooding were not clearly linked to the timing of monsoons. The lack of seasonal peaks in breeding may be attributed to the relatively constant climatic conditions experienced near the equator.Communicated by M. S. Johnson, Crawley  相似文献

Mediterranean populations of Schizobrachiella sanguinea seem to span a wide range of contrasting benthic habitats. We have studied adult, larval, and recruit populations of S. sanguinea from sublittoral (approximately 10 m depth) communities at Blanes (Spain, NW Mediterranean). At the study site, the species colonises semi-obscure caves and, to a lesser extent, communities of sciaphilic algae. Our first goal was to show the periods of brooding, larval release, and recruitment. Plankton was collected about twice a week between July 1998 and June 2000 over an artificial reef. A total of 303 larvae were collected in 23 of the 102 days of sampling. At the study site the species shows a single, annual larval release period, which occurs from late March to June–July every year. Recruits were found from late May to late August 1999 and in late May 2000. A recruitment peak was observed in July 1999 and again in late May 2000. The presence of brooding adults corresponded to the periods of larval supply and recruitment. Our second goal was to investigate the causes of the variable distribution of the species along several communities in the north-west Mediterranean Sea. We describe adult distribution and the dynamics of larval supply, recruitment of early (15 days from settlement) and late (4 months from settlement) recruits. Patterns of larval presence and early recruit distribution along the communities on the reef did not reflect the adult distributions, whereas this was closely matched by the distribution of late recruits. Post-recruitment mortality strongly affected recruits of the PA (photophilic algae) and SA (sciaphilic algae) communities, whereas it was very low in the communities of SOC (semi-obscure caves). Mortality of recruits was density independent and colony survivorship in the SA communities, where recruitment was the highest, appeared strongly affected by competition with brown algae. Like the majority of cheilostomate bryozoans, S. sanguinea releases a coronate larva capable of active swimming and positive reaction to light. Such swimming abilities may allow larvae to actively select the substrate on which to settle and to avoid unsuitable substrates. It seems that larval behaviour does not explain the preference of S. sanguinea for sciaphilic habitats. High post-recruitment mortality due to various factors, especially competition with fast-growing algae, seems particularly relevant in determining the adult distributions observed.Communicated by S.A. Early development was examined, under various salinities, for two sympatric nereidid polychaetes, Hediste japonica and H. diadroma, which participated in a simultaneous reproductive swarming in an estuary of the Omuta-gawa River in Ariake Sea, Japan. The eggs of both species were isotonic to the medium of 27.5–30 psu salinity. The egg diameter in the isotonic salinity was 180–205 μm in H. japonica, and 130–160 μm in H. diadroma. Successful development of most embryos was observed in a salinity range of 22.5–30 psu in both species, while successful fertilization occurred in wider ranges of salinity, i.e., 10–34 psu in H. japonica and 10 to 30 psu in H. diadroma. In both species, free-swimming larval life started from the indistinct hatching of trochophores out of a jelly layer capsule. The lecithotrophic development appeared to run to the 4-setiger nectochaetes in H. japonica, while to 3-setiger nectochaetes in H. diadroma, resulting in a shorter pelagic larval life in H. japonica. In a comparison of larval morphology among Hediste species, we found a definite negative correlation between the prostomium width, which represents the larval size and depends on egg size, and relative length of chaetae to the prostomium width: the relative length of chaetae was the longest in H. diadroma (with the smallest egg size and long pelagic life), intermediate in H. japonica (intermediate egg size, short pelagic life), and the shortest in H. atoka (largest egg size, no true pelagic life). We also examined the possibility of hybridization between H. japonica and H. diadroma through cross-insemination experiments. The gametes of the two species were reciprocally compatible, and viable hybrid offspring were produced by the laboratory crosses. The hybrid larvae expressed intermediate phenotypes, but with a greater maternal influence in characteristics such as the relative length of chaetae and the lecithotrophic larval duration.  相似文献

Spatial models of genetic structure and potential gene flow were determined for five populations of Balanophyllia europaea, a simultaneous hermaphroditic and brooding coral, endemic to the Mediterranean. Six allozyme loci indicated a genetic structure that departed markedly from Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium, with a significant lack of heterozygotes. The genetic structure observed supports the hypothesis that self-fertilisation characterises the reproductive biology of B. europaea. Populations at small spatial scales (8–40 m) are genetically connected, while those at large scales (36–1,941 km) are genetically fragmented; the genetic differentiation of the populations is not correlated to geographic separation. This spatial model of genetic structure is compatible with an inbreeding mating system. Furthermore, it is also consistent with the expected dispersal potential of swimming larvae of brooding corals, i.e. larvae that are able to produce significant gene flows only within limited spatial scales.Communicated by R. Characteristics of the sexual reproduction and larval settlement of the haplosclerid spongeChalinula sp., which inhabits the shallow waters (1 to 6 m) of Eilat, Red Sea, were investigated from September 1985 through to November 1987. This species was found to be a simultaneous hermaphroditic brooder, hence gonochorism is not the rule in the order Haplosclerida. Brooding always takes place in special brooding chambers. While the oocytes in the brooding chambers are among the largest known in sponges (355±37µm), the spermatic cysts distributed in the choanosome are among the smallest known for this phylum (average 26±7µm).Chalinula sp. breeds throughout the year and in experiments most larvae (74%) settled within 1 to 8 h post-release, generally within 4.5 h. Metamorphosis from larval shape to a sessile sponge lasts 1 to 6 h. Thus, larvae had a short swimming period, settled fast, and metamorphosed rapidly (within 1 to 6 h). The large size of the larvae may contribute to their ability to rapidly reorganize their body shape into that of a sessile sponge. In addition, the existence of already differentiated choanocyte chambers in the larvae, facilitates fast construction of the water filtration system in the newly settled sponges. The reproductive and larval characteristics ofChalinula sp. enable the larvae to settle on any vacant space in the reef, which may explain its abundance in the Red Sea.  相似文献

The reproductive cycle of the sub-Antarctic spatangoid sea urchin, Abatus cavernosus, was examined during a 2-year period in southern Patagonia, Argentina. The population studied is the northernmost known coastal population in the austral oceans, and is influenced by a greater annual range of seawater temperature than other Abatus species. The sex ratio of the overall A. cavernosus population did not differ significantly from 1:1, but was not homogeneous across size classes. A clearly defined annual reproductive cycle was found. Spawning occurred from May to July and was synchronous between sexes. Females were observed to be brooding within a 9-month period, from May to February. Juveniles were released during the austral summer, from January to February. The length at which 50% of the females were brooding occurred at a test length of 25.9 mm. A. cavernosus had a large egg size (mean diameter = 1.4 mm) and low fecundity (maximum = 57 eggs per female) compared to closely related species. The number of eggs within each brood pouch was highest in larger anterior brood pouch, which is close to two gonopores, as opposed to the other anterior and two smaller posterior pouches. Significant interannual variation was observed in gonad cycles, fecundity, and embryo development such as: brood size decreased during 2001; adjusted gonad dry weight and fecundity were higher during 2003. Hypotheses concerning the gonadal and brooding cycles and fecundity of sub-Antarctic and Antarctic Schizasteridae are discussed. Spatial and temporal variation in recruitment of the compound ascidian Aplidium stellatum was examined on a shallow-water limestone outcropping in the Northeastern Gulf of Mexico from 1983 to 1985. Fifty-two percent of the recruits appeared on vertical surfaces, which were rare at this site. In the laboratory, tadpole larvae of A. stellatum consistently settled on vertical vs horizontal surfaces in a 2 to 1 ratio, regardless of the area of vertical surface offered. This settlement response was insufficient to account entirely for the field recruitment pattern, suggesting greater mortality of newly-settled individuals or larvae on horizontal vs vertical surfaces. Fifty-six percent of the variation in recruitment over 21 months could be explained by variation in the percentage of zooids brooding larvae in adult colonies. Over 28 consecutive months, the percentage of zooids brooding larvae was positively correlated with egg counts of the previous month (r 2=0.75), which in turn were weakly correlated with monthly average water temperature (r 2=0.36). These results suggest that larval production contributed substantially to temporal variation in recruitment of A. stellatum. The short larval life of tadpoles of A. stellatum and the relative isolation of the population were probably responsible for the correlation between recruitment and larval production.  相似文献

More than 6000 individuals of the snailLittorina littorea L., from 6 different localities on the coast of the German Bay (North Sea), were examined for larval trematodes by crushing their shells, an additional 6000 by isolation in small quantities of sea water. Six species of larval trematodes were found inL. littorea and described: Notocotylid larva —Cercaria lebouri Stunkard, 1932; Cercaria ofHimasthla elongata (Mehlis, 1831); Cercaria ofPodocotyle atomon (Rudolphi, 1802); Cercaria ofRenicola roscovita (Stunkard, 1932) n. comb.; Metacercaria ofMicrophallus pygmaeus (Levinsen, 1881); Cercaria ofCryptocotyle lingua (Creplin, 1825). Considering the large number of investigated snails, the trematode fauna ofL. littorea in this area is assumed to be completely known. The life cycles ofHimasthla elongata andRenicola roscovita are described. Larvae of the different trematode species show differential preferences for distinct size groups of snail hosts. Juvenile snails are not infected. No correlation exists between infection rates and sex of the hosts. Quantitative aspects of multiple infections are calculated and discussed. The incidence of larval trematodes in the investigated localities differs. Information is presented on seasonal variations of infestations and their possible causes.  相似文献

A population of the small clam Kingiella chilenica Soot Ryen 1959 was studied from March 1986 to December 1988 in an intertidal flat at Queule River, in the south of Chile. The life cycle and life history pattern of the bivalve were established contrasting population structure and dynamics to its reproductive habits. Individuals are gonochoristic and semelparous, presenting a typical annual life cycle. The species is a sequential brooder whose embryos undergo direct development. After the brooding season (summer through autumn), the adults disappear gradually (autumn through winter). Recruited juveniles overwinter during a relatively long period, undergoing rapid growth during the spring to attain the adult stage during the summer. The number of brooded embryos increases in proportion to adult length cubed. Life history traits of this bivalve are compared to those reported for other small brooder clams. Some basic tendencies become apparent when traits for semelparous versus iteroparous species are contrasted. As in other semelparous sequential brooders (Transennella tantilla, Gaimardia bahamondei), the relationship between brood size and shell length obseved in K. chilenica does not fit the allometry hypothesis for marine brooding invertebrtes that allometric constraints on the brooding space limit the fecundity of larger individuals. Also contrary to theoretical predictions, small body size does not limit the diversity of a clam's developmental patterns. Possible explanations for this finding are discussed.  相似文献

Brooding, embryonic and larval development, and the influence of environmental and biological factors in tidepool habitats were studied in the sea star, Anasterias minuta, at various sites along ~220 km of the Patagonian coast. This species has a benthic, lecithotrophic development that includes eight distinct developmental stages. A larval organ, the connection cord, is developed from a small preoral lobe at early stages of development and becomes larger and thinner at advanced stages. Fecundity and average egg size increased with female body size. The regression of log egg number to log sea-star size and weight at different sites had a slope significantly less than 3.0, resulting in negative allometry and indicating that brood capacity was limited in large females. Development was generally synchronous among sites, but varied within each brood at advanced stages, with more developed brooded larvae located at the periphery of the brood mass. Brooding was synchronous among various populations at different years and spatial scales, and extended over a period of 8 months. The highest proportion of brooding females occurred during May and June (austral winter). Juveniles were released mainly during September. The likelihood of finding brooding sea stars decreased with increasing sea water temperature, tidal height, and wave exposure, and increased with increasing body size. Both body size of brooding females and brooding rate were higher in the infralittoral fringe than at midlittoral levels. A revision of the current model of brooding behavior and development among forcipulate sea stars is given.  相似文献

The reproductive cycles and abundance of the sympatric colonial ascidians Pycnoclavella brava, Pycnoclavella aurilucens and Pycnoclavella communis from two Northwestern Mediterranean sites over a period of 2.5 years are reported. The species showed some differences in their biological patterns. Gonad maturation and larval brooding took place during autumn and early winter for P. communis, during spring for P. aurilucens and during late winter and spring for P. brava. Summer was found to be the unfavorable season for all species, and an aestivation period occurred in P. communis and P. brava. Maximum abundance for the three species was observed during winter. Growth rates of the most abundant species, P. communis, were also monitored and found to peak during the initial phases of reactivation after aestivation. Growth rates decreased afterwards, becoming negative as water temperature started to increase after the winter minima. Reproductive activity and growth rates for P. communis displayed a temporal lag that suggested partitioning of resources to either reproduction or growth in this species.  相似文献

Although polyclads are amongst the most structurally simple of the triploblastic metazoans, they adopt a wide range of reproductive strategies. Parental care behaviour in this group is yet to be quantified for any species. We assessed the significance of brooding behaviour to the reproductive success of two free-living marine flatworms. Echinoplana celerrima and Stylochus pygmaeus were collected from the field and placed in pairs in containers of filtered seawater where they laid batches of eggs. Both parents were then removed from half of the containers and the brooding behaviour and hatching success of eggs were quantified. There were interspecific differences in brooding behaviour. Egg masses were covered by one E. celerrima parent for 12 ± 2% of time, whereas egg masses of S. pygmaeus were covered by one or both parents simultaneously for 85 ± 8% of time. Egg batches were abandoned by both species immediately prior to the onset of hatching (10–12 days). Hatching success was generally high (~90%) and brooding did not enhance the hatching success of eggs. We assessed the significance of parental care to hatching success of E. celerrima egg masses in the presence of three potential egg predators; in the presence of other organisms. E. celerrima devoted less time to brooding; however, hatching success was not affected. The amount of time spent brooding eggs differed greatly between the two polyclad species but was not essential to their reproductive success under benign conditions. Parental care may be of adaptive value under more stressful environmental conditions commonly experienced in estuarine environments such as lowered salinity, increased hypoxia or turbidity. Covering egg batches may play an additional role of advertising sexual status and a willingness to care for eggs.  相似文献

The sea cucumber Holothuria arenacava was discovered in the Mombasa marine reserve in 1997 and described by Samyn et al. (2001). The reproductive biology of this holothurian was investigated in order to (1) characterize the reproductive pattern, (2) examine the relationship among environmental parameters including temperature, light and lunar period, and (3) examine the relationship between the reproductive pattern and feeding of this new species. The gonad index method and microscopic examination of gonads was used to analyze samples collected for a period of 13 months. H. arenacava displayed an annual reproductive cycle with gametogenesis commencing in July during the south-east monsoons, when temperature and light intensity are lowest along the Kenyan coast. Gonad growth peaked in February–March at the end of the north-east monsoons when temperatures and light reach their annual maxima along the Kenyan coast. The higher correlation between light intensity and gonad growth (r=93) than temperature (r=0.71), coupled with the fact that temperatures continued to drop for a month after gametogenesis had already commenced, suggests that light intensity and not temperature is the cue for the onset of gametogenesis in this species. Spawning was synchronized between females and males and occurred during a short period between March and May (inter-monsoonal period) when both temperature and light intensity decrease along the Kenyan coast. Male and female gonad indices showed significant variation with lunar day and no lunar periodicity was observed in this sea cucumber. The sex ratio of the population of H. arenacava was skewed towards significantly more females than males, and females were significantly larger and had larger gonads and gonad indices than males. These life history strategies including spawning during a short discrete period, more and larger females that have larger gonads (i.e., typically more fecund), and spawning just prior to the peak in phytoplankton concentrations, a time that is probably more favorable for larval development, may serve to increase the reproductive success of this sea cucumber.  相似文献

In Japan, mass-production of sea urchin juveniles involves the culture of periphytic diatom films on plastic plates in 5- to 15-tonne tanks for the induction of larval metamorphosis. This study focused on the larval response of sea urchins, Pseudocentrotus depressus and Anthocidaris crassispina, to natural microbial films in the sea and diatom-based films formed in the tanks. The effect of diatoms and bacteria on larval metamorphosis was also examined using laboratory-cultured diatom-based films in the presence of germanium dioxide and antibiotics during film culture. Furthermore, the nature of the cue of the cultured diatom-based film was also investigated. Results showed that P. depressus and A. crassispina metamorphosed both on natural microbial films and diatom-based films in a tank. In the sea, the metamorphosis (%) of P. depressus increased gradually in accordance with the immersion period of film formed on glass slides, whereas the larval metamorphosis of A. crassispina had a bell-shaped response curve. In the tank, although the diatom-based films showed a low inducing activity for larval metamorphosis of A. crassispina, the metamorphosis of P. depressus larvae increased linearly in accordance with the diatom density. These results suggest that diatom-based films could promote the larval metamorphosis of P. depressus, but are less important in A. crassispina. In a simultaneous larval assay (May), P. depressus showed a higher percentage of metamorphosis than A. crassispina. We concluded that the former is more sensitive to diatom-based film than the latter and that this is due to differences in their natural habitats. For laboratory-cultured diatom-based film, both species of sea urchins showed a similar response, in which reduction in diatom and bacteria density resulted in a decrease in the original inducing activity. There seems to be a synergistic effect between diatom and bacteria in inducing larval metamorphosis. Films subjected to treatment with 0.1 N HCl were no longer inductive for either sea urchin, while those films treated with 40°C heat or EtOH (5% and 10% EtOH) showed a significant reduction in the inducing activity. The amount of genetic structure in marine invertebrates is often thought to be negatively correlated with larval duration. However, larval retention may increase genetic structure in species with long-lived planktonic larvae, and rafting provides a means of dispersal for species that lack a larval dispersal phase. We compared genetic structure, demographic histories and levels of gene flow of regional lineages (in most cases defined by biogeographic region) of five southern African coastal invertebrates with three main types of larval development: (1) dispersal by long-lived planktonic larvae (mudprawn Upogebia africana and brown mussel Perna perna), (2) abbreviated larval development (crown crab Hymenosoma orbiculare) and (3) direct development (estuarine isopod Exosphaeroma hylecoetes and estuarine cumacean Iphinoe truncata). We hypothesized that H. orbiculare, having abbreviated larval development, would employ a strategy of larval retention, resulting in genetic structure comparable to that of the direct developers rather than the planktonic dispersers. However, regional population structure was significantly lower in all species with planktonic larvae, including H. orbiculare, than in the direct developers. Moreover, nested clade analysis identified demographic histories resulting from low levels of gene flow (isolation by distance and allopatric fragmentation) in the direct developers only, and migration rates were significantly higher in all three species having planktonic larvae than in the direct developers. We conclude that the amount of genetic structure within marine biogeographic regions strongly depends on the presence or absence of free-swimming larvae. Whether such larvae are primarily exported or retained, whether they have long or short larval duration, and whether or not they are capable of active dispersal seems to have little effect on connectivity among populations.  相似文献

Summary We investigated the process of sexual maturation in winged queens of the fire ant Solenopsis invicta, a species with two distinct forms of social organization. We found that queens of the monogynous social form (single reproductive queen per colony) differ little or not at all from queens of the polygynous form (multiple reproductive queens per colony) in weight and fat content when these are pupae or newly-eclosed adults. Furthermore, the size of a sclerotized region of the adult thorax, which is set during larval growth, does not differ between queens of the two forms. In contrast, winged queens of the two social forms differ dramatically in their physiological phenotypes once they have matured, with monogynous queens weighing more and having greater fat reserves than polygynous queens. A crossfostering experiment revealed that the different maturation processes of queens of the two forms are induced largely by the type of colony in which a queen matures (monogynous or polygynous) rather than being due to intrinsic genetic differences between the forms. However, genetic variation at a single locus does appear to play some role in determining physiological phenotype in queens of the polygynous form, providing an example of genotype-environment interaction in the expression of these physiological traits. Differences between the social forms in the mature phenotypes that are produced constrain the reproductive options of queens, so that the characteristic social organization of a colony is perpetuated by virtue of the social environment in which new queens are reared. The reproductive biology of the Mediterranean vermetid gastropod Serpulorbis arenarius, a subtidal sessile solitary species that lives in shady rocky communities, was studied at two localities south-east of the Iberian Peninsula. Its population density is usually low, with specimens sometimes sparsely distributed. Its shell often appears to be covered by epibiotic organisms. The sex ratio is biased toward males (63%) in the populations of SE Spain, and the results point towards hermaphroditism with alternating sexuality. The results obtained suggest that all specimens are first males, change to females under some as yet unknown condition and, after the ovogenesis cycle has been completed, revert to the original sexual state (male). The possible adaptive forces that favour hermaphroditism in this species are discussed, and we hypothesise that the seizure of a spermatophore by males may stimulate sex change to female. Brooding females (51% of females studied) were found from March to December. In males, histological study of testes revealed that spermatogenesis seems to occur throughout the year. Females brooded between 5 and 28 (=15) egg capsules, which were attached by stalks to the inner surface of the shell. It is noteworthy that the gonads of two of the specimens brooding egg capsules were developing testes. The newly laid egg capsules were filled with an organic intracapsular matrix, in which 40–153 (=94) eggs were embedded. The mean diameter of the uncleaved ova was 352.5 µm. The organic intracapsular matrix and some nurse eggs were used as an extra-embryonic food source. Hatching occurred at an advanced veliger stage, immediately followed by metamorphosis. The Chilean gastropods Crepipatella dilatata and C. fecunda have different development modes: brooding and direct development in C. dilatata and brooding and planktotrophic development in C. fecunda. Unlike many other congeneric invertebrate species pairs, recent genetic evidence suggests that C. fecunda may have evolved from C. dilatata. To explore the changes involved in this unusual evolutionary path, this study examined the biochemical, energetic, and morphological characters during early development of both species. Mean egg size was slightly smaller for the direct-developing species C. dilatata, and initial energy content was lower—by about 27%—for eggs of that species. In both species, protein content in the eggs was the principal biochemical component. Although females of C. fecunda produce 180 times more eggs than C. dilatata, females of C. dilatata invest 20 times more energy in each of their offspring, through nurse eggs; their embryos have approximately eight times more energy at hatching and about 5 times more energy when they enter the benthos, despite a long planktonic feeding period in the larvae of C. fecunda. Evolutionary switching between modes of development in these species is reflected in shifts in maternal energy investment.  相似文献
