Thallium (Tl) is an extremely toxic but little studied metal. For Hyalella azteca exposed in Lake Ontario water, a 25% reduction in survival (the LC25) occurred at about 48 nmol litre(-1) after 4 weeks. Body concentrations of Tl, which were proportional to water concentrations, averaged 290 nmol g(-1) dry mass at the LC25. Growth was reduced at slightly lower concentrations. Concentrations affecting reproduction were variable at < 50% of the LC25. On a water-concentration basis Tl was more toxic than Ni, Cu or Zn, but less toxic than Cd or Hg to Hyalella; toxicity to Pb was similar. On a body-concentration basis, the toxicities of Tl, Cd, Hg and Pb were all similar. Unlike Cd, Tl toxicity and uptake was affected by K concentrations in the water, and not by Ca, Mg, Na or other ions. Toxicity was proportional to uptake, and body concentrations were better predictors of toxicity than water concentrations in media with varying K concentrations. Preliminary measurements of Tl and Cd uptake by Hyalella from Hamilton Harbour and Lake Ontario sediments suggested that total bioavailable metal concentrations were greater in deep-water sediments from Lake Ontario than in sediments from the harbour. The ratio of bioavailable metal to the toxic threshold was slightly higher for Cd than for Tl, but well below 1 for both metals.  相似文献

Sediments from lakes near Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec, contain elevated concentrations of several metals, including Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn. Amphipods, fingernail clams, mayflies and tanytarsid midges were absent, and sediment toxicity was observed in chronic tests with Hyalella in sediments from Lac Dufault, the lake closest to Rouyn-Noranda. Bioaccumulation by Hyalella demonstrated elevated bioavailability of Cd, Co, Cr, Pb and Tl, but only Cd was accumulated to levels close to the toxic threshold. Copper, which is regulated by Hyalella, was not elevated in these amphipods, but it was elevated in overlying water in the toxicity tests. Toxic effects in Lac Dufault sediments are probably caused primarily by Cd, at least in amphipods, with a possible minor contribution from Cu. An integrated assessment, including sediment chemistry, benthic community composition, sediment toxicity, metal bioaccumulation in benthos, and comparison of bioaccumulation and/or overlying water concentrations with threshold effect concentrations, provides the best indication of effects and their cause.  相似文献

Minimum dissolved oxygen requirements are part of standard guidelines for toxicity testing of freshwater sediments with several benthic invertebrates, but the data underlying these requirements are somewhat sparse. We exposed three common test organisms to ranges of dissolved oxygen concentrations to determine their responses in 10-d exposures, relative to published guidelines for sediment toxicity tests. The oligochaete, Lumbriculus variegatus, showed 100% survival in all exposures down to the lowest concentration tested, 0.7 mg O(2)l(-1). Midge (Chironomus dilutus) larva showed a more pronounced response; while survival was less than 90% only below 1.0mg O(2)l(-1), the biomass endpoint showed EC(50), EC(20), and EC(10) values of 1.00 (0.91-1.10), 1.41 (1.16-1.71), and 1.67 (1.25-2.24) mg O(2)l(-1). The amphipod, Hyalella azteca, showed no adverse effects at concentrations as low as 2.12 mg O(2)l(-1). The combination of these data with other literature data suggest that DO minima in current North American 10-d sediment test guidelines are reasonable.  相似文献

Deterioration of overlying water quality during toxicity tests with benthic invertebrates is a serious problem with some sediments. One solution is periodic renewal of overlying water. However, this is either labour intensive or requires construction and maintenance of special equipment. Furthermore, water renewal has the potential for flushing toxic chemicals out of the test chamber and establishes nonequilibrium conditions between the water and sediment. An alternative is testing under static conditions using atypical test vessels (e.g. Imhoff settling cones) with a large water volume (1 l) overlaying a much smaller sediment volume (e.g. 15 ml). This results in dramatic improvement of overlying water quality compared to standard static toxicity tests. Compared to water renewal, the test method is much simpler, all toxic substances leached from the sediment are retained in the test vessel, and contaminant concentrations in water and sediment have more time to equilibrate. Chronic sediment toxicity tests (10-28 days) have been conducted successfully under these conditions with Chironomus riparius, Hexagenia sp., Hyalella azteca and Tubifex tubifex.  相似文献

Sediment cores from Richard Lake near Sudbury, Ontario, were sectioned and analyzed for total metal content, plus metal bioavailability and toxicity to Hyalella azteca (after equilibration with oxygenated overlying water). Strong and similar sediment profiles were observed for Cd, Co, Cu and Ni in the sediment. However, these differed from metal bioavailability profiles (bioaccumulation by Hyalella and metals in overlying water). Bioavailability profiles for Cu also differed from those for Cd, Co or Ni. The deepest sediment layers, deposited prior to industrial development, were non-toxic. Sediment toxicity was attributed to Ni dissolution into overlying water. Moreover, differential bioavailability of Ni in surface and deeper sediment layers was observed. This can affect the interpretation of toxicity data for sediments collected by different methods (e.g. core vs. grab samples). Based on Pb-210 dating and trends in Ni in the core, chronic toxicity of surface sediments from Richard Lake might approach non-toxic levels in about 15 years.  相似文献

Ecological risk assessments of pharmaceuticals are currently difficult because little-to-no aquatic hazard and exposure information exists in the peer-reviewed literature for most therapeutics. Recently several studies have identified fluoxetine, a widely prescribed antidepressant, in municipal effluents. To evaluate the potential aquatic toxicity of fluoxetine, single species laboratory toxicity tests were performed to assess hazard to aquatic biota. Average LC(50) values for Ceriodaphnia dubia, Daphnia magna, and Pimephales promelas were 0.756 (234 microg/l), 2.65 (820 microg/l), and 2.28 microM (705 microg/l), respectively. Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata growth and C. dubia fecundity were decreased by 0.044 (14 microg/l) and 0.72 microM (223 microg/l) fluoxetine treatments, respectively. Oryias latipes survival was not affected by fluoxteine exposure up to a concentration of 28.9 microM (8.9 mg/l). An LC(50) of 15.2 mg/kg was estimated for Chironomus tentans. Hyalella azteca survival was not affected up to 43 mg/kg fluoxetine sediment exposure. Growth lowest observed effect concentrations for C. tentans and H. azteca were 1.3 and 5.6 mg/kg, respectively. Our findings indicate that lowest measured fluoxetine effect levels are an order of magnitude higher than highest reported municipal effluent concentrations.  相似文献

Chronic toxicity and bioaccumulation of decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5) to Hyalella azteca was examined in a series of spiked sediment exposures. Juvenile H. azteca were exposed for 28 d (chronic) to a concentration series of D5 in two natural sediments of differing organic carbon content (O.C.) and particle size composition. The chronic, LC50s were 191 and 857 μg D5 g−1 dry weight for Lakes Erie (0.5% O.C.) and Restoule (11% O.C.) respectively. Inhibition of growth only occurred with the L. Restoule spiked sediment with a resultant EC25 of 821 μg g−1 dw. Lethality was a more sensitive endpoint than growth inhibition. Biota sediment accumulation factors (BSAFs, 28 d) were <1 indicating that D5 did not bioconcentrate based on lipid normalized tissue concentrations and organic carbon normalized sediment concentrations. Organic carbon (OC) in the sediment appeared to be protective, however normalization to OC did not normalize the toxicity. Normalization of D5 concentrations in the sediments to sand content did normalize the toxicity and LC50 values of 3180 and 3570 μg D5 g−1 sand dw were determined to be statistically the same.  相似文献

To determine changes in metal distribution, bioavailability and toxicity with sediment depth, two 20-cm-long replicate cores were collected from a lake historically subjected to the influence of metal mining and smelting activity. The vertical distribution of Pb, Cd and Cu in sediment was similar for all three metals, with the surface layers showing enrichment and the deeper (pre-industrial) layers showing lower concentrations. Toxicity of each sediment core section was determined in laboratory tests with the freshwater amphipod Hyalella azteca. Bioavailable metal in each sediment slice was estimated from metal concentrations in overlying water in these toxicity tests and, for Cd, also from metal bioaccumulation. The profile for Cd in tissue was comparable to Cd in sediment and overlying water, but relative Cd bioavailability from sediment increased with sediment depth. Survival increased with increasing sediment depth, suggesting that surface sediments were probably less or non-toxic before industrialization.  相似文献

An automated water-renewal toxicity test system is described for exposing benthic invertebrates to whole sediments. The system will intermittently deliver laboratory or on-site water for overlying water replacement in sediment exposures. A range of cycle rates can be used to produce different volume additions of overlying water per day to exposure chambers. The system can be used with six different treatments and eight replicates per treatment producing 48 exposure chambers. Three formulated sediments with variable organic carbon (1.5%, 7.5%) and sand (14%, 63%) content were prepared to test the system exposing amphipods, Hyalella azteca and midges, Chironomus tentans in 10 day whole sediment tests. Intermittent water flow was used with a 90 min cycle time to create two volume additions of laboratory water per 24 h in exposure chambers (180 ml sediment, 320 ml water). Overlying water quality conditions, and survival and growth of both species were consistent and within acceptable limits for the testing requirements of the U.S. EPA guidelines for sediments with freshwater invertebrates.  相似文献

The sensitivities of eight benthic amphipods, Chaetocorophium cf. lucasi, Corophium colo, Grandidierella japonica, Hyale crassicornis, Hyale longicornis, Melita awa, Melita matilda and Melita plumulosa, to copper and zinc in water-only and whole-sediment toxicity tests were compared. Whole-sediment tests used copper- (1300 mg/kg) and zinc- (4000 mg/kg) spiked sediments after equilibration for sufficient time to produce pore water and overlying water concentrations below the lowest observable effect concentrations of water-only exposures. Survival of adults (after 10 d) and juveniles (after 96 h), and the metal concentrations in the body tissues of adults, were determined at the end of the tests. Two epibenthic amphipods from the genus Melita were the most sensitive species to aqueous copper and zinc, with a 96-h LC50 value of 120 microg Cu/l for both M. awa and M. plumulosa juveniles, and a 96-h LC50 value of 640 microg Zn/l for juveniles of M. plumulosa. Juvenile amphipods (7-d old) were more sensitive than adult amphipods (>30-d old) in both water-only and whole-sediment tests, with adult-LC50/juvenile-LC50 ratios in water-only tests ranging from 1.2 to l.5 for copper and 1 to 1.4 for zinc. All species except C. colo, C. cf. lucasi and M. matilda were sensitive to the copper-spiked sediment, with survival between 14% and 74% of controls. Similarly, all species except C. colo and G. japonica, showed a response to the zinc-spiked sediment (26-81% of control survival). The epibenthic amphipods were more sensitive than the infaunal tube-dwelling amphipods and are recommended as test species.  相似文献

Surficial sediments (the fraction < 2000 microm) from the Bay of Thessaloniki, in the Northwestern Aegean Sea, Greece were examined for heavy metal and organic carbon contents, as well as for acute LUMIStox toxicity of pore waters (PWs), wet sediment elutriates (WSEs) and dry sediment elutriates (DSEs) obtained from the solid material remaining after PW extraction. WSEs where not toxic. EC20/50 values could be measured in some DSE and PW samples. In all sediment samples, the DSE toxicity was greater than the corresponding PW toxicity. Sediment concentrations of total and labile Cd, Pb, Cu, Cr, Zn, Mn, Ni and Fe were determined and evaluated in relation to sediment quality guidelines. Pollution levels ranged from low to high for certain metals. A misfit between sediment toxicities calculated from heavy metal concentrations and those biologically measured was observed. Toxicity values were in general poorly correlated with sediment's heavy metal or organic carbon content. As significant correlation was however found between the DSE toxicity with total Ni and labile Fe, as well as for the PW toxicity with total Ni, labile Fe and labile Cr.  相似文献

The toxicity of ammonia to Hyalella azteca at constant pH in artificial media was controlled by sodium and potassium, and not by calcium, magnesium, or anions. Small increases in the LC50 for total ammonia (from 0.15 to 0.5 mM) occurred as sodium was increased from 0.1 to 1 mM and above, but major increases in the LC50 (to over 10 mM total ammonia) required the addition of potassium. Potassium was, however, more effective at reducing ammonia toxicity at high (1 mM) sodium than at low (0.1 mM) sodium. Ammonia toxicity was independent of pH at low sodium and potassium concentrations, when ammonia toxicity appeared to be associated primarily with aqueous ammonium ion concentrations. At high sodium and potassium concentrations, the toxicity of ammonia was reduced to the point where un-ionized ammonia concentrations also affected toxicity, and the LC50 became pH dependent. A mathematical model was produced for predicting ammonia toxicity from sodium and potassium concentrations and pH.  相似文献

A natural, field-collected sediment high in organic carbon (OC) and low in acid-volatile sulfide (AVS) was used to evaluate nickel (Ni) complexation to organic matter (OM) over a range of pH under anoxic conditions. It was found that OM strongly influenced Ni partitioning and that Ni complexation to OM was significantly influenced by pH, with complexation increasing with increasing pH (from pH 6 to 8). Using an equilibrium partitioning approach incorporating both [SEM(Ni)]-[AVS] and OC content, lethal and non-lethal toxicity test endpoints were calculated (predicted) and compared to observed toxicity test results using the amphipod, Hyalella azteca, exposed to four Ni-spiked natural sediments varying in OC and AVS content. Generally, lethal and non-lethal toxicity test endpoints were reasonably predictable in low AVS sediments. Due to the apparent lack of equilibrium between dissolved pore-water Ni and the pure Ni sulfide (likely the result of additional dissolved metal binding ligands), and the possible competition of liberated Fe2+ with Ni2+ for binding sites on organic matter, toxicity predictions (based on sediment OC and AVS content) overestimated the combined protective effects of AVS and OC in the sediments containing mid to high (27.87-44.05 micromol/g d.w.) AVS concentrations. Overall, it was found that equilibrium partitioning-based sediment quality guidelines can be improved through the incorporation of nickel complexation to sedimentary OM (in addition to AVS), although further research is required to fully describe nickel-OM interaction.  相似文献

The study of the effect of the sorption of linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LAS) on the bioavailability to marine benthic organisms is essential to refine the environmental risk assessment of these compounds. According to the equilibrium partitioning theory (EqP), the effect concentration in water-only exposure will be similar to the effect concentration in the sediment pore water. In this work, sorption and desorption experiments with two marine sediments were carried out using the compound C12-2-LAS. The effect of the sediment sorption on the toxicity of benthic organisms was studied in water-only and in sediment bioassays with the marine mud shrimp Corophium volutator. In addition, three common spiking methods were tested for its application in the toxicity tests, as well as the stability of the surfactant during the water-only and sediment-water test duration. LC50 values obtained from water-only exposure showed a good correspondence with the pore water concentrations calculated from the sorption and desorption isotherms in the spiked sediments.  相似文献

We investigated the influence of soil properties on Ni toxicity to barley root and tomato shoot growth, using 16 European soils. The effective concentration of added Ni causing 50% inhibition (EC(50)) ranged from 52 to 1929mgkg(-1) and from 17 to 920mgkg(-1) for the barley and tomato test, respectively, representing 37- and 54-fold variation among soils. Soil cation exchange capacity was the best single predictor for the EC(50). The EC(50) based on either the Ni concentration or free Ni(2+) activity in soil solution varied less among soils (7-14 fold) than that based on the total added Ni, suggesting that solubility of Ni is a key factor influencing its toxicity to plants. The EC(50) for free Ni(2+) activity from the barley test decreased with increasing pH, indicating a protective effect of protons. The results can be used in the risk assessment of Ni in the terrestrial environment.  相似文献

This paper reports results of genotoxicity and toxicity studies of water and sediment samples collected from the Estancia Velha stream of southern Brazil, a stream transporting both domestic sewage and effluents from regional factories working in the leather industry. Three sites were selected: in the stream headwaters (Site 1), located downstream of an urban area (Site 2), and near the basin outfall (Site 3). Results obtained with Allium cepa showed no evidence of chromosomal mutation, either in water or in sediment, during winter or summer seasons, but samples collected below Site 1 showed high toxicity. Physical and chemical analyses showed high concentrations of pollutants at these sites. Ecotoxicity tests with Daphnia magna and Ceriodaphnia dubia measured toxicity in water from Sites 2 and 3 in summer 2004. A toxic effect on Hyalella azteca was only found in sediment from Site 3 during winter 2003 and summer 2004. The results suggest that the synergy among different compounds in domestic and industrial sewage discharges can make it difficult to maintain system stability.  相似文献

Bioavailability, toxicokinetics and toxicity (LC(50)) of water- and sediment-associated 2,4,5-trichlorophenol (2,4,5-TCP) and pentachlorophenol (PCP) were measured in Lumbriculus variegatus Müller in a set of experiments. The critical body residue approach was applied by measuring also the lethal body residues (LBR(50)). Freshwater and three different sediments with various sediment organic carbon (SOC) concentrations were used as exposure media. SOC decreased the bioavailability of both chlorophenols, and the uptake rates decreased by 81% and 91% for 2,4,5-TCP and PCP, respectively, in the sediment with a SOC of 6.9% compared to those in sediment with a SOC of 0.5%. SOC appeared to be an important factor controlling the bioavailability as after the carbon normalisation the difference between the sediments was much smaller. The 96-h LC(50) values for instance for PCP were 145.3 microg/l in freshwater, and 6.8 and 8.1 microg/g dry weight in sediments with SOC concentrations of 0.5% and 2.4%, respectively. The LBR(50) values, were practically the same in freshwater and sediments: between 1.0 and 1.6 and from 0.4 to 0.9 micromol/g wet weight for 2,4,5-TCP and PCP, respectively, demonstrating the usefulness of this method for accurate, and more comparable, measurement of toxicity of chemicals with the same mode of toxic action in varying conditions. L. variegatus expressed a dose-response sediment avoidance behaviour but the PCP tissue concentrations were not affected by this behaviour.  相似文献

Ammonia toxicity resulted in the continuous mortality of Hyalella azteca for up to 10 weeks with similar mortality rates for adults and young. Growth was not reduced at concentrations below those causing chronic mortality (1 mM total ammonia in Lake Ontario water), but reproduction was reduced at concentrations as low as 0.32 mM. Chronic mortality was a function of total ammonia (or ammonium ion), and not un-ionized ammonia, when the pH was adjusted by addition of acid. However, a 1 in 10 dilution of Lake Ontario water in distilled water resulted in a 10-fold reduction in the 4 week LC50. In contrast to common practice, ammonia toxicity to Hyalella is best defined on a total ammonia basis, but variations in hardness and other ions must be taken into account.  相似文献

The fate, effects, and potential environmental risks of ethylene glycol (EG) in the environment were examined. EG undergoes rapid biodegradation in aerobic and anaerobic environments (approximately 100% removal of EG within 24 h to 28 days). In air, EG reacts with photo-chemically produced hydroxyl radicals with a resulting atmospheric half-life of 2 days. Acute toxicity values (LC(50)s and EC(50)s) were generally >10,000 mg/l for fish and aquatic invertebrates. The data collectively show that EG is not persistent in air, surface water, soil, or groundwater, is practically non-toxic to aquatic organisms, and does not bioaccumulate in aquatic organisms. Potential long-term, quasi-steady state regional concentrations of EG estimated with a multi-media model for air, water, soil, and sediment were all less than predicted no effect concentrations (PNECs).  相似文献

In this work, sediment samples collected from several Spanish harbours were tested with two toxicity procedures, designed for solid samples: the Microtox Basic Solid-Phase Test (BSPT) and a modified procedure of the previous test protocol (mBSPT). According to the BSPT procedure, after initial light readings, pure bacteria were exposed to sediment suspension dilutions and light production was directly measured on suspended sediments without any further manipulation. As measurements are likely to be affected by sediment turbidity and color, a variation in initial light measurement has been here suggested, in order to consider the sample effect at all time readings during the test. Firstly, when sediment suspensions at different concentrations were added to bacteria suspension, immediately the initial light output drastically decayed by more than 50% in signal difference, resulting in a false inhibition, as effect of sample turbidity/color. This effect was more evident at high EC50 values, when slightly or not toxic samples were assessed. Secondly, the comparison of the EC50 obtained with both procedures, demonstrated that the mBSPT produced higher EC50 values (less toxic) than those obtained with the standard procedure. The mBSPT procedure resulted rapid and effective and it could be applied simultaneously with BSPT, in order to better evaluate the toxicity.  相似文献
