A 6-week feeding trial was conducted with 44-d-old European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) in order to examine the effect of various dietary phospholipid (PL) sources on the incorporation of n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) in tissue lipids. From weaning onwards the fish received diets prepared by coating different lipid fractions (7.5% diet) on an extruded basal diet (92.5% diet). The two PL-free control diets contained 0.5 and 2% of an emulsifier blend, respectively. Seven other diets contained 2% PL, differing by their purity and origin (vegetable or animal). All diets were rendered isolipidic by the addition of hydrogenated coconut oil. Feeding the PL-supplemented diets, except the diet containing hydrolyzed soybean PL (lyso PL), resulted in a higher survival and a 10 to 30% better growth as compared to the PL-free diets. No difference according to the PL origin was observed. The sea bass final lipid content increased with increasing body weight. Also the lipid class composition of the fish was clearly correlated with the final weight gain. Total neutral lipid increased from 51% of total lipid (initial fish) to 76% for fish fed the PL-free diets, and up to 88% for fish fed the sunflower PL. Weaning the fish on the experimental diets induced important changes in their fatty acid profiles characterized by a decrease in 18:3n-3, 20:5n-3 and 20:4n-6 and an increase in saturated fatty acids and 22:6n-3 (DHA). According to the fatty acid composition of both total and polar lipid, the weaned fish could be divided into three groups reflecting the dietary fatty acids: a group fed the vegetable PL, a group fed the animal PL and a PL-deprived group. An effect of dietary PL on the incorporation of dietary n-3 HUFA, more particularly DHA, was noticed. For a similar supply of DHA through the neutral lipids in the diet, fish fed PL-supplemented diets (except for the lyso PL diet) had 10 to 25% higher DHA levels in total and polar lipid than PL-deprived fish. This PL effect was already clear at the end of the weaning and was not related to the presence of n-3 HUFA in the PL source, as suspected in a previous study when feeding egg yolk PL. A better incorporation of DHA was not obtained by replacing the PL by an emulsifier or by lyso PL with higher emulsifying properties. Pacific oyster [Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg)] broodstock were hatchery-conditioned with either a mixed algal diet of Dunaliella tertiolecta, Tetraselmis suecica and Rhodomonas sp. [1:1:1, on a dry weight (DW) basis] (Control), a single diet of D. tertiolecta (Duna) or a single diet of D. tertiolecta supplemented with an emulsion rich in eicosapentaenoic (20:5n-3) and particularly docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n-3) (Duna+Em). Oysters were spawned after a conditioning period of 7 and 8 weeks and larvae were reared for 1 week on an Isochrysis galbana (clone T-Iso) diet. The percentage recovery of D-larvae from eggs of Control-fed oysters and Duna+Em-fed oysters was not significantly different (80% and 63% after 7 weeks of conditioning; 87% and 74% after 8 weeks of conditioning, respectively] but was much higher than from eggs produced by Duna-fed oysters (24% and 41% after 7 and 8 weeks of conditioning, respectively). A reduction in the percentage recovery of D-larvae as a result of temperature or salinity stress was most severe in eggs from Duna-fed oysters. Neither the broodstock diet nor the conditioning period affected the size of eggs or D-larvae, larval performance, or lipid content and lipid class distribution of the eggs. The fatty acid composition of the eggs was modified by the fatty acid composition of the algal diet and the lipid emulsion. The supplementation of the emulsion resulted in a pronounced increase in the percentage of 22:6n-3 in the polar (PL) and neutral lipids (NL) of the eggs (4.0-13.4% and 8.5-14.7% in NL and PL, respectively). The egg lipids (7-8 ng egg-1) contained about 62% NL and were dominated by triglycerides (TAG), which made up 65% of the NL. The major phospholipids were phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), ceramide aminoethylphosphonate and phosphatidylinositol (CAEP+PI), phosphatidylserine (PS) and phosphatidylcholine (PC). Regardless of the broodstock diet treatment, the PL fraction contained high percentages of non-methylene-interrupted dienes (NMID) and plasmalogens (detected as dimethyl acetals).  相似文献

The distribution of n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) over the major neutral and polar lipid classes was determined for two predominant types of live food used in the larviculture of marine fish and shrimp, i.e. freshly hatched and HUFA-enriched Artemia, and compared with data reported in the literature for wild copepods, representing the natural diet of these larvae. Lipid class composition and their content of n-3 HUFA, particularly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3), were assessed in freshly hatched, HUFA-enriched and subsequently starved Artemia franciscana. The n-3 HUFA enrichment was based on feeding Artemia a lipid emulsion in which either fatty acid ethyl esters (EE, diluted with olive oil) or triacylglycerol (TAG) provided a level of 30% n-3 HUFA. Enrichment of Artemia with either type of the lipid emulsions resulted in an increase of total lipid content from 20.0 to 28.2–28.7% of dry matter mainly due to the accumulation of neutral lipid, primarily TAG (from 82 to 158 mg g−1 dry wt in freshly hatched and 24-h enriched Artemia). Enriched brine shrimp utilized up to 27–30% of their TAG content during 72 h of starvation at 12 °C. The absolute tissue concentrations of polar lipids remained constant at 71 to 79 mg g−1 dry wt throughout the enrichment and subsequent starvation. The level of n-3 HUFA increased drastically during enrichment from 6.3% of total fatty acids (8.2 mg g−1 dry wt) in freshly hatched nauplii to between 20.4 and 21.8% (40.4 to 43.2 mg g−1 dry wt) in 24-h enriched Artemia and was not significantly affected by the source of n-3 HUFA. During starvation, 18:0, 20:4n-6 and 20:5n-3 were retained, whereas 18:4n-3, 22:5n-3 and 22:6n-3 were specifically catabolized. The major polar lipids, phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) and phosphatidylcholine (PC), of freshly hatched Artemia showed very low levels of DHA (<0.1% of total fatty acids) and carried about 45% of the total EPA present. Enrichment with either of the emulsions resulted in an increase of the neutral lipid fraction which concentrated >64% of the EPA and >91% of the total DHA present. This is in sharp contrast with the high levels of n-3 HUFA, in particular DHA, in the polar lipid fraction reported for wild copepods. The contrasting distribution of DHA in the neutral and polar lipid fractions of enriched brine shrimp compared to the natural diet may influence the efficacy of this essential fatty acid for marine fish larvae in aquaculture systems. Four species of microalgae (Chaetoceros muelleri, Tetraselmis suecica, Tahitian Isochrysis sp. (T-iso) and Dunaliella tertiolecta) with distinctly different fatty acid profiles were grown in continuous culture and fed to prawn larvae (Penaeus japonicus, P. semisulcatus and P. monodon) as monospecific diets. The best two diets (C. muelleri and T. suecica) were also fed as a mixed diet. Experiments were run until the larvae fed the control diet of C. muelleri metamorphosed to Mysis 1. The survival and development (i.e. performance) of the larvae were affected by algal diet, and the diets were ranked in the order of decreasing nutritional value: C. muelleri ≥ T. suecica > T-iso > D. tertiolecta. Larvae fed a mixed diet of C. muelleri and T. suecica (2:3 by dry weight) performed as well or better than those fed C. muelleri, and the performance of both these groups of larvae was better than those fed T. suecica. The lipid and carbohydrate compositions of the algae had little or no effect on the lipid and carbohydrate compositions of the larvae or their performance. However, the larvae that performed best (i.e. those fed C. muelleri) had significantly more lipid and carbohydrate than those that performed worst (i.e. those fed D. tertiolecta). Larvae fed C. muelleri or the mixed-algae diet had higher proportions of the essential fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid [EPA, 20:5(n-3)] and arachidonic acid [ARA, 20:4(n-6)] than the larvae fed on other diets. Furthermore, the larvae fed T. suecica, which showed intermediate performance between larvae fed C. muelleri and T-iso or D. tertiolecta, also had higher proportions of EPA and ARA. Both C. muelleri and T. suecica contained EPA and ARA, but T-iso and D. tertiolecta did not, except for trace amounts of EPA in T-iso. The fatty acid ARA appears to be much more important in the diet of larval prawns than has so far been considered. The level of the essential fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid [DHA, 22:6(n-3)] in the algal diet and the larvae was not related to the performance of the larvae; only C. muelleri and T-iso contained DHA. However, the nauplii contained large proportions of DHA, suggesting that these were sufficient to meet the larval requirements for DHA during their development to Mysis 1. Pleuragramma antarcticum is a key component of the neritic assemblages in the Antarctic coastal waters. Larvae of this species were sampled from 2008 to 2011 in the Dumont d’Urville Sea (East Antarctica). The lipid class composition [triacylglycerols (TAG), cholesterol (Chol) and polar lipids (PL)] of larvae was measured to assess the larval condition. The total amount of lipids was linearly related to the quantity of structural polar lipids, suggesting that growth is favored over lipid storage. The TAG:Chol ratio showed interannual variability in the condition of fish larvae, probably related to prey availability. Nevertheless, the essential fatty acids composition of polar lipids illustrates that larvae with low levels of TAG:Chol could be either growing or under starvation. Only the combination of a low TAG:Chol ratio and low polar lipids content, which can also be mobilized during starvation periods, allowed identification of larvae in poor condition. This lipid condition index should be of great assistance to evaluate the probability of survival of P. antarcticum larvae in long-term monitoring. It has widespread applicability and should also be useful in the diagnosis of nutritional condition in other species.  相似文献

The fatty acid and alcohol composition of the pelagic amphipod, Themisto libellula, was monitored during the 5 first months of its life cycle (4–20 mm length) in an Arctic fjord, Kongsfjorden, Svalbard. Fatty acids of the three major lipid classes, polar lipids (PL), triacylglycerol (TAG), and wax esters (WE), were analyzed to highlight ontogenic changes in their diet and metabolism. The PL composition of T. libellula did not show any strong variations along their growth except during the first month where an important increase of 20:5(n-3) (EPA) and 22:6(n-3) (DHA) was observed. The TAG composition revealed a clear gradient corresponding to a diet shift from omnivorous juveniles toward carnivorous sub-adults and adults. Indeed, fatty acid trophic markers of diatoms were dominant in the juveniles, whereas 20:1(n-9) and 22:1(n-11), the Calanus sp. trophic markers, overwhelmed in the older stages. The WE composition highlighted the same general trend, however, differences were found with the TAG and are discussed as a result of differences in turnover rates and assimilation pathways between the two lipid classes.  相似文献

The impact of supplementing lipid emulsions rich in eicosapentaenoic acid (EmEPA), docosahexaenoic acid (EmDHA) or saturated fatty acids (EmCOCO) to a standard algal diet [3:1 mixture of Isochrysis galbana (T-iso) and Chaetoceros neogracile, St-diet] on Argopecten purpuratus broodstock was evaluated. Broodstock fecundity was compared as well as the egg quality in terms of lipid content, fatty acid composition and lipid class distribution. Fecundity was defined as the number of eggs released in the spawning process, since spawning was virtually complete. Results indicated that the total lipid content of the eggs of A. purpuratus was diet independent. A greater energy reserve was spent on a larger number of oocytes and not on bigger sized oocytes with a higher lipid content. The lipids supplied through the emulsions were at least partially allocated to the eggs, demonstrating that the fatty acid composition of the eggs could be manipulated, especially the neutral lipid fraction. Levels of EPA changed more rapidly than DHA levels, supporting the observation that they fulfilled an energetic and structural role, respectively. The St-diet supplemented with 50%EmCOCO resulted in a significantly higher fecundity compared to the algal diet supplemented with 25%EmEPA+25%EmDHA and the non-supplemented algal diet. It would seem that saturated fatty acids (SAFA) were more easily or preferentially incorporated in the female gonads of A. purpuratus. The relative content of SAFA and 18:2( n-6) in these eggs rose significantly. The relative content of the highly unsaturated fatty acids, EPA and DHA, on the other hand was substantially lower in the neutral lipid fraction, but hardly affected in the polar lipid fraction. It appeared that the maintenance of an adequate DHA/EPA ratio (approximately 1.2) was more important than the absolute levels of the two fatty acids, as long as a threshold value was reached.  相似文献

The lipid composition of tropical marine reef fishes is poorly known, despite their use as food by local human populations and recent interest in health-related benefits of fish lipids. We examined the composition of lipids from epaxial muscle, liver, and two storage sites [mesenteries surrounding the gut (intraperitoneal fat, IPFs) and retroperitoneal fat bodies (FBs) posterior to the peritoneal cavity] in three species of surgeonfishes from Ishigaki Island, Japan: Naso lituratus (Bloch and Schneider, 1801), Acanthurus lineatus (Linnaeus, 1758), and A. bariene (Lesson, 1830). Triacylglycerols dominated all samples of neutral lipid and constituted ≥ 99% of FBs and IPFs. Polar lipids generally contained large fractions of phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylcholine. Quantified fatty acids ranged in length from C14 to C24. C16 fatty acids prevailed (>35% of neutral fatty acids, >23% of polar fatty acids), although C18 (>16 and >14%, respectively) and C20 acids (>8 and >19%, respectively) were also common. Saturated fatty acids, dominated by palmitic acid (16:0), comprised 38.7 to 50.7% of acids from neutral lipids and 30.8 to 41.1% from polar lipids. The most common monounsaturated acids were 18:1n9 and 20:1n9. Polyunsaturated acids were prevalent in polar lipids (especially 20:4n6, 20:5n3, 22:2n3, 22:5n3, 22:5n6 and 22:6n3). Common polyunsaturated acids of neutral lipids were 18:2n6, 18:4n3, several n-3 and n-6 C20 acids, 22:2n3 and 22:5n3. IPF and FB were almost identical across species, and lipids of fat bodies (IPFs, FBs) were more similar to those of muscle than those of liver for all three species. The FBs appear to constitute an accessory storage site, which overcomes constraints on lipid storage imposed by a small, inflexible abdominal cavity that contains both viscera and consistently voluminous gut contents. Fatty acid signatures indicate that largely overlooked epiphytic or epilithic diatoms contribute significantly to lipid acquisition. The combination of large quantities of both saturated and n-3 and other polyunsaturated fatty acids in surgeonfishes, in contrast to low saturates and high polyunsaturated acids in lipids of commercially important cool-water fishes, suggests that a study of dietary effects of fish lipids on human inhabitants of the tropics may be instructive insofar as human health and nutrition are concerned. Changes in the lipid class and fatty acid composition of developing eggs and unfed larvae of cod (Gadus morhua L.) were studied with the objective of determining probable requirements of cod larvae for dietary lipid. The eggs were collected on 24 March 1985 from holding tanks containing cod which had been caught off the northwest coast of Scotland. Phosphatidylcholine (PC) was the only lipid class to decline in absolute terms during embryogenesis. Catabolism of neutral lipid was initiated during the first week after hatching, and the rate of neutral lipid utilisation increased after the larvae had completely absorbed their yolk sacs. The quantity of triacylglycerol (TAG) remained constant during embryogenesis, but the percentage of 22:6(n-3) int TAG increased substantially during this period. It was calculated that ca. 33% of the 22:6(m-3) released during the process of PC catabolism was incorporated into TAG and sterol ester. The results suggest that PC, replete in appropriate essential fatty acids, should represent a major proportion of the lipid in artificial diets for fish and crustacean larvae.  相似文献

Fertilized Atlantic halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus L.) eggs in different developmental stages (Days 0 to 18) were sampled from plankton in North Norway in February 1986 and analysed for lipid classes and fatty acid content. In unfertilized ovulated eggs taken from ripe fish caught in 1983/1984, polar and neutral lipids comprised ca. 71 and 30% of the total lipids, respectively, decreasing and increasing to 67 and 33%, respectively, in Stage III (11 to 18 d old) fertilized eggs. Of the polar lipids, phosphatidylcholine decreased markedly from 62% in unfertilized ovulated eggs to ca. 40% in Stage I (0 to 3 d old) fertilized eggs, while phosphatidylethanolamine increased from ca. 7 to 33%. Triacylglycerols, the major neutral lipids, increased from ca. 13% in unfertilized ovulated eggs to 16% in Stage III fertilized eggs. The total lipid in Stage I fertilized eggs had relatively low levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), with (n-3) PUFA accounting for only ca. 25% of the total fatty acids. The (n-3) PUFA increased to ca. 40% of the total fatty acids in Stage III, while the (n-3): (n-6) ratio increased from 4.1 to 7.0.  相似文献

Aquaculture studies have revealed that polyunsaturated fatty acids are critical for maintaining substantial growth, survival and reproductive rates, and high food conversion efficiencies for a wide variety of marine and freshwater organisms. The aim of this study was to investigate the gross biochemical and fatty acid composition of both neutral and polar lipid compartments of the razor clam Solen marginatus throughout embryonic and larval development. High levels of stored reserves in S. marginatus eggs allow a short larval development, lasting only 8 days. The energy required for embryogenesis was obtained from stored proteins. During larval development from D-shaped veliger until settlement, protein, lipid, and carbohydrate reserves were indistinctly stored for metamorphosis. Although total lipids increased, fatty acids in both neutral and polar lipids decreased during embryonic development. The depots allow a short larval development in which settlement is reached with lower amounts of stored neutral and polar lipids than the contents found in the oocytes. Non-methylene-interrupted dienoic fatty acid levels were similar to those of some polyunsaturated fatty acids, with increasing percentages at the onset of metamorphosis. This study indicates that S. marginatus exhibits a different pattern in the use of gross biochemical and fatty acid reserves during larval development compared to other razor clam and bivalve species, mainly due to the large size of its eggs and the short larval development stage reported in this species.  相似文献

The pelagic yellowtail kingfish Seriola lalandi has become a target species for aquaculture in Asia and Australasia. Australasian production is reliant on larviculture from eggs of captive brood stock; however, knowledge regarding the nutritional requirements of larvae of this species is still scarce, particularly in relation to lipids. As a first step in establishing these requirements, eggs and larvae from captive S. lalandi brood stock were examined for differences in total protein, total lipid and lipid classes between individual spawning events, over the spawning season, and during larval development from fertilisation to 15 days post hatch. Results indicate that total protein egg−1 varied significantly between individual spawning events within a season, but neither total lipid nor total protein egg−1 varied significantly across the spawning season. Brood stock egg lipids were made up of approximately 60% phospholipid, 25% wax and/or sterol esters (WE), 15% triacylglycerol (TAG), and small amounts of sterols and free fatty acids. During the early larval period, both WE and TAG were utilised concurrently for energy. The larvae experienced very high mortality around 5–7 days post hatch, which coincided with very low levels of all neutral lipid classes. Although many other factors may also influence larval mortality, these results indicate that lipid provisioning may be an important factor in larval survival during the critical period around first-feeding in this species. Examination of ratios of TAG:ST, often used as a condition index in fish larvae, suggested that some of the larvae were suffering from starvation. However, as egg-derived WE appears to provide a significant source of energy during the early larval period in S. lalandi, it is suggested that WE should be included in any index of larval nutritional state.  相似文献

This paper provides the basis for a general model of catabolic metabolism for developing embryos and yolk-sac larvae of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua L.). Yolk-dependent routine rates of oxygen consumption, ammonia excretion, and accumulation of ammonium ions were related to quantitative changes in contents of glucose, glycogen, lactate, free amino acids, proteins and lipid classes (lipid classes published separately) in order to determine the rate and sequence of catabolic substrate oxidation that occurs with development at 6.0°C, 34.5 S. The stoichiometric relation of the oxygen consumption and total ammonia production to substrate utilisation indicated that during the first 2 to 3 d of development, glycogen was the sole substrate of oxidative metabolism. After formation of the syncytium, free amino acids (75%) together with polar lipids (13%, mainly phosphatidyl choline) and neutral lipids (9%, mainly triacylglycerol) comprised the metabolic fuels of embryonic development. Following hatch (Day 16 post fertilisation), the fuels were free amino acids (32%), polar lipids (20%, mainly phosphatidyl choline), neutral lipids (17%, mainly triacylglycerol) and proteins (31%). Thus, the catabolic metabolism of endogenously feeding Atlantic cod larvae was predominantly fuelled by amino acids (67%) and lipids (32%), while glycogen only accounted for 1% of the total enthalpy dissipated. It is proposed that the above sequence of catabolic substrate oxidation is also generally applicable to other cold-water fishes which spawn eggs that do not contain oil glubules.  相似文献

Changes in biochemical composition, lipid class and fatty acid contents were studied in the ovaries and midgut glands of the fiddler crabs Uca tangeri Eydoux during maturation. Wild females were caught during spring and early summer of 1992 in the Bay of Cádiz (southwest Spain), near the mouth of the San Pedro river. Protein and total lipid contents in the ovaries increased significantly from Stages III to IV, at the expense of total carbohydrate, which showed a large decrease during the same period. In the midgut gland, the protein content did not present any significant variation, whereas total lipids and total carbohydrates presented opposite up and down trends during maturation. In the ovary, total polar lipids increased significantly during the final phase of maturation (Stages III to IV), mainly due to the significant contribution of the phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine fractions. In contrast, total neutral lipids showed an upward trend throughout the whole maturation period, mainly due to significant increases of the triacylglycerol fraction. In the midgut gland, total polar lipids (mainly phosphatidylcholine) and total neutral lipids (mainly triacylglycerol) presented significant decreases from Stages II to III, the phase which preceded major increases in both polar and neutral lipids in the ovaries. Cholesterol content did not vary during maturation in either organ, in the ovary or midgut gland. Major fatty acids in the ovaries [16:0, 16:1 (n-7), 18:1 (n-9), 18:1 (n-7), 18:2 (n-6), 18:3 (n-3), 20:4 (n-6), 20:5 (n-3) and 22:6 (n-3)] did, however, accumulate significantly at later stages of maturation. It is noteworthy that arachidonic acid [20:4 (n-6)] content remained constant during all stages of maturation but decreased significantly in total polar lipids in the later phases of maturation. In contrast, eicosapentaenoic acid [20:5 (n-3)] increased significantly in all lipid fractions in the later stages, and docosahexaenoic acid [22:6 (n-3)] remained constant in the polar lipids and increased during later stages in the triacylglycerol fraction. Major fatty acids in the midgut gland lipids showed significant decreases from Stages II to III, just before the final period of maturation.  相似文献

Current aquaculture practices have a detrimental impact on the environment, in particular due to the release of high concentration of nitrogen and phosphorus that can induce eutrophication. This study investigates and compares the capacity of three microalgae species Tetraselmis suecica, Isochrysis galbana and Dunaliella tertiolecta, in the bioremediation of grey mullet Mugil cephalus wastewater. The experiment was conducted in batch conditions for 7 days using completely mixed bubble column photobioreactors. After two days, T. suecica and D. tertiolecta were able to remove more than 90% of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and dissolved inorganic phosphorous (DIP), whereas I. galbana removed only 32% and 79% of DIN and DIP, respectively. A higher biomass yield resulted for T. suecica (603?±?34?mg/L, mean?±?SE). This study confirms the potential to employ T. suecica in an Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture system for bioremediation of wastewater and identifies D. tertiolecta as another valid candidate species. Moreover, these species can growth in unsterilized culture media, and this reduces energy consumption, costs and efforts.  相似文献

 For three spider crabs (Tiarinia cornigera, Micippaplatipes and Pugettia quadridens quadridens), patterns of algal utilization for decorating were compared with the dynamics of algae on an intertidal rocky shore reef where the crabs co-occurred. T. cornigera and P. quadridens quadridens were most abundant from autumn to spring when the dominant algae (Boodleacoacta, Sargassum hemiphyllum, S. thunbergii and Corallina pilulifera) occurred in high coverage, while M. platipes was most abundant from spring to autumn. Monthly change of algae used for decorating was not correlated with algae growing in the crab habitat for T. cornigera, but for M. platipes, it was positively correlated for two algal species, and for P. quadridens quadridens, negatively correlated for one algal species. Each species of the spider crabs used some algal species preferentially for decoration. Decorating preference experiments conducted in the laboratory showed that M. platipes and P. quadridens quadridens exhibited similar preference to their algal utilization in the field, whereas for T. cornigera, algal preference in the experiment differed from utilization in the field. Comparisons between materials used for decoration and gut contents revealed that T. cornigera and M. platipes used algal species differently for decorating and feeding, while P. quadridens quadridens used the same algal species for both decorating and feeding. We characterized the prey field and the lipid classes/fatty acids in the flesh of age 0 juvenile cod (Gadus morhua) during their late-summer/fall arrival and settlement into eelgrass (Zostera marina) in coastal Newfoundland. Examination of available prey demonstrated a high abundance of small zooplankton (Acartia, Microsetella and Oithona sp.) with no larger Calanus sp. prey. Breakpoint analysis showed significant changes in the accumulation of relative (mg g−1 wet weight) and absolute (μg fish−1) amounts of lipid with standard length at the time of settlement (~60 mm standard length). Settling juvenile cod showed an alternate lipid utilization strategy where they catabolized phospholipids (PL) to a greater extent than triacylgylcerols (TAG). Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) content in cod flesh decreased as fish grew indicating that nearshore zooplankton quality was not optimal for PL formation. The dramatic reduction in cod PL was likely due to both catabolism of muscle and a lack of dietary PUFA suitable for PL synthesis. However, juvenile cod continued to grow, leading to decreased lipid stores and suggesting that cod settling into eelgrass are under intense selection pressure for growth prior to the onset of winter, possibly as a means of escaping gape-limited predation. These data contrast better-studied freshwater and estuarine systems in which lipid storage is critical for successful overwintering.  相似文献

We determined the temporal evolution of amylase, cellulase, laminarinase and protease in the digestive gland and crystalline style of cockles Cerastoderma edule held over 9 to 12 d in the presence and absence of food. Cockles were fed a constant diet of 1.5 mm3 l−1 of Tetraselmis suecica for 9 to 12 d and were then starved for 6 to 8 d in late summer (September 1992) and in winter (January 1993). Feeding increased the dry weight and total cellulase, laminarinase and protease activities of the digestive gland irrespective of season, whereas amylase activity remained unchanged. In winter (i.e. when cockles are metabolically weak) the response was faster and stronger, especially for protease. An additional experiment in September starved cockles for 20 d before resuming feeding. In agreement with the seasonal differences, the presence of food after prolonged starvation induced a rapid and marked increase in protease in the digestive gland of the cockles. In winter, the possible effects of the biochemical composition of food on their enzymatic response were tested by feeding two groups of cockles with the same ration of T. suecica but harvested at different growth phases. A compensatory induction of cellulases occurred in cockles fed on T. suecica with a lower carbohydrate content. In the crystalline style, the protein level and carbohydrase fell during the first day of feeding and increased during the first day of subsequent starvation. These results indicate that the release of enzymes from the style prevails over the incorporation of enzymes during the early stages of feeding, whereas the opposite occurs during starvation. Lipids are stored in mesenteries surrouding the gut and in paired, retroperitoneal fat bodies dorsal to the anal fin in at least 24 surgeonfishes representing 5 genera (Acanthurus, Ctenochaetus, Naso, Prionurus, Zebrasoma) from Western Mexico, Hawaii, French Polynesia, Great Barrier Reef and the Red Sea. In A. nigrofuscus from the Red Sea and C. striatus from French Polynesia, fat stores and condition index (K=100 W/L 3) increased during cool seasons, several months before gonads developed, and declined with the onset of gonadal development. Fat bodies and mesenteric fat deposits developed in all sizes of A. nigrofuscus and C. striatus, and condition paralleled seasonal changes in fat deposits. Gonads of A. nigrofuscus developed in specimens of 76 to 159 mm standard length (SL), while they developed in C. striatus only at lengths>170 mm total length (TL) for females and 195 mm TL for males. Mesenteric fats and fat bodies exhibited similar changes in size, and did not differ in occurrence of major groups of lipids or their relative prevalence. The relative proportions of the major lipid classes differed, however, between these storage sites and other tissues. Muscle, liver and gonads contained less triacylglycerol relative to cholesterol and polar lipid than did mesenteric or fat body lipids. Energy and nutrients acquired during cool saasons with short feeding days appear to support reproductive events during warm seasons, when feeding during longer days fails to meet demands. Fat stores and condition continue to decline beyond the reproductive season until winter.  相似文献

Lipid and protein biochemistry of eggs (84 μm in diameter), embryos and early larvae of the tropical echinoid Tripneustes gratilla (Linnaeus 1758) were quantified to determine how maternal provisions are used to fuel development of the echinopluteus. The eggs contained a mean of 30.82 ng lipid and 87.32 ng protein. Energetic lipids were the major lipid component (55.52% of total lipid) with the major class being triglyceride (TG: mean 15.9 ng, 51.58% of total). Structural lipid was dominated by phospholipid (PL: mean 11.18 ng, 36.26% of total). Early embryogenesis was not a major drain on egg energetic lipid and protein. Development of the functional feeding larva used ca. 50% of initial egg energetic lipid and most of this was TG. Maternal TG was still present in the 8-day echinoplutei and it was estimated that this energetic lipid would be depleted in unfed larvae by day 10. There was no change in PL. In a separate experiment lipid biochemistry of rudiment stage larvae and early developing juveniles were quantified to determine how lipids are used during metamorphosis. Fed larvae accumulated lipid (mean 275.49 ng) with TG and PL being the major energetic and structural lipids, respectively. Larval lipid stores were not appreciably depleted by metamorphosis and so were available for the early benthic stage juvenile. Juveniles started their benthic existence with 314 ng total lipid (TG: mean 46.84 ng, 14.9% of total, PL: mean 137.51 ng, 43.67% of total). Nile Red histochemistry and histology showed that the stomach serves as a nutrient storage organ and, that lipid stores accrued by larvae sustain developing juveniles for up to 4 days post settlement. Triglyceride supported both non-feeding stages of development and the prefeeding larval and perimetamorphic benthic stage. In this first study of lipid stores in settlement stage echinoderm larvae, we show that T. gratilla larvae sequester the same major energetic lipid (TG) to support the early juvenile that the female parent provided them to fuel early development.  相似文献
