As much as 89, 176 and 292 g Cd g-1 dry weight were accumulated by adult Crassostrea virginica after treatment for 40 wk with 5, 10 and 15 g Cd kg-1, respectively, in flowing seawater at ambient salinity and temperature without mortalities. Cadmium accumulation increased with increased concentration of cadmium in seawater; greater amounts were accumulated during the summer months. Uptake patterns measured as cadmium content were similar among the total soft parts, gill, mantle and visceral mass. A continuous increase of cadmium concentration in the visceral mass was observed. This differed from the uptake patterns observed as cadmium concentration in gill, mantle and total soft parts. Although cadmium accumulation in the total soft parts and the tissues was curvilinear over the entire study period, significant linear relations between cadmium concentration and time indicated a general increasing trend. At seawater temperatures below 6°C, when oysters were not actively feeding, cadmium concentrations in the total soft parts varied significantly between treatments, but not within treatments. In the tissues, the rate of uptake expressed as cadmium concentrations was visceral mass>gillmantle. Cadmium concentration in the total soft parts varied inversely with dry weight, whereas cadmium concentration in the total soft parts increased, whereas the content decreased. Cadmium concentration decreased in mantle and gill but increased in the visceral mass during spawning, whereas cadmium content decreased in all tissues. Regression analyses indicated that during spawning dry weight decreased at the same rate in gill and mantle, but they lost less weight and lost it more slowly than visceral mass. Also, during spawning, cadmium content decreased in mantle and gill at the same rate but more slowly than in the visceral mass. In mid-August, Cd concentration decreased despite the continuous addition of cadmium to the seawater; however, Cd content increased, suggesting that organism weight was responsible for fluctuations in cadmium concentrations.  相似文献

Measuring the amount of fossil fuel carbon stored in the vegetation is now crucial to understand the mechanisms ruling climate changes. In this respect, highly polluted areas such as major towns represent “natural” laboratories because fossil fuel CO2 (14C-free) is isotopically distinct from mean atmospheric CO2 (14C-labeled). Here, a14C study of urban grasses near a major highway in Paris, France, shows that plants store up to 13% of fossil fuel carbon. The 14C composition of urban grasses is thus a novel parameter to assess the fossil fuel CO2 pollution.  相似文献

The diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana in exponential phase or stationary phase and grown under 3 light regimes was fed to 6 groups of juvenile oysters, Crassostrea virginica Gmelin, for a 10-week period. Oysters fed diets from the stationary phase grew more rapidly and had a higher glycogen content than those fed diets from the exponential phase. The stationary phase, cool white-light diet produced the greatest increase in dry weight, shell height and glycogen content of the 6 diets examined. Oysters grew more rapidly when fed diets richer in carbohydrates than proteins.  相似文献

To study the kinetics of mercury uptake in oysters, adult Crassostrea virginica (Gmelin) were held in seawater containing 10 g mercury/l (ppb) or 100 g mercury/l (ppb), added in the form of mercuric acetate, for 60 days. Mercury concentration in tissues was determined by analysis of individually homogenized oyster meats, using wet digestion and flameless absorption spectrophotometry. After 45 days, average mercury tissue concentration was 140,000 g mercury/kg tissue (ppb) and 28,000 g mercury/kg tissue (ppb) in the 100 ppb and 10 ppb experimental groups, respectively. After this time, concentrations dropped sharply, probably due to spawning. Clearance of mercury from tissue was studied by exposing treated adults to estuarine water (with no additions) for 30 days (100 ppb group) and 160 days (10 ppb group). Tissue concentrations in the 100 ppb mercury environment group declined from 115,000 to 65,000 ppb, and those of the 10 ppb group declined from 18,000 to 15,000 ppb, in 18 days; there-after, no further decline occurred in either group. Oysters accumulated mercury 1,400 times and 2,800 times above the environmental concentrations of 100 and 10 ppb mercury, respectively. Total self-purification was not achieved over a 6 month cleansing period.  相似文献

Biotic and abiotic conditions can separately and synergistically influence the abundance and distribution of species and create vertical zonation patterns in marine systems. In Corpus Christi Bay, TX, USA, eastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica) are limited to intertidal habitats, while in adjacent estuaries, oysters not only grow subtidally, but thrive in these areas to the extent they are a viable commercial fishery. The purpose of this study was to assess how predators and abiotic conditions affect oyster mortality and growth at different tidal elevations. Anecdotal evidence suggests that abiotic conditions, primarily hypoxia and salinity, as well as oyster disease, limits oysters to intertidal areas. Yet, in Corpus Christi Bay, oysters are absent from subtidal areas where hypoxia is not known to occur. Infection by Perkinsus marinus (Dermo) is common in the study area, but previous work suggests that infection rates do not increase when oysters are transplanted subtidally. We investigated oyster tidal distributions by transplanting newly settled oysters into intertidal and subtidal areas. Predation on oysters was significantly greater in subtidal as compared to intertidal habitats. When protected from predators using cages, oyster survival significantly increased. Further, oysters in subtidal areas allocated significantly more resources to shell growth than did those in intertidal areas, and oysters are known to grow heavier shells in response to predators. Oyster settlement was not statistically different between inter and subtidal areas, and abiotic conditions measured during the study did not exceed known tolerance limits for oysters. Previous studies have shown that abiotic conditions influence oyster mortality and the success of restored oyster reefs. Our findings indicate that predators can also affect oyster distribution, and their effects should be evaluated when developing plans for oyster management and restoration.  相似文献

We analyzed a data set collected over 15 yr, containing growth data from strains of eastern oysters, Crassostrea virginica (Gmelin, 1791), initiated from parent populations in Long Island Sound, Delaware Bay, and lower Chesapeake Bay. The long-term growth data proved to be a powerful tool for examining patterns of growth differentiation among separated populations of C. virginica. The oyster strains had been grown in a common environment in lower Delaware Bay for up to seven generations. We found that the oyster strains with origins in Long Island Sound were significantly larger over several generations than oyster strains from Delaware Bay and Chesapeake Bay. Chesapeake Bay oyster strains were larger than Delaware Bay oyster strains at 1.5 yr old, but Delaware Bay oysters were larger at 2.5 yr. Year-to-year variation in environmental conditions had a strong significant effect on absolute oyster size and the relative sizes of the oyster strains. Persistent differences between oyster strains from different origins over several generations support a hypothesis that these estuarine populations have experienced long-term genetically-based population differentiation. This result is consistent with hypotheses of population differentiation of oysters based on observations of local reproductive timing. Received: 12 August 1997 / Accepted: 26 May 1998  相似文献

Rates of calcium incorporation by selected tissues of Crassostrea virginica increased in a step-wise fashion from lowest values among organisms exposed to ambient total calcium concentrations of 45 mg l-1, intermediate values among oysters exposed to 135, 225, and 315 mg l-1, to highest rates for oysters exposed to 360 mg l-1. Although excised visceral mass tissue had highest rates of calcium incorporation relative to mantle, muscle, and both organic and inorganic portions of the shell, mantle tissue appeared to have the most dynamic response to changes in ambient calcium concentrations. Rates of dissolved calcium incorporation from ambient water were approximately two to three orders of magnitude higher than comparable rates from ingested algal food. Behavioral response to concentrations of selected inoic, species in the ambient environment may have been responsible for observed differences in rates of calcium incorporation.  相似文献

Adult Crassostrea virginica were obtained from 4 populations and spawned in the laboratory. The larvae from the within-population crosses and the hybrid crosses were raised at 4 salinities. There were no significant differences in survival of the larvae between the populations. However, one set of hybrids did show overdominance in survival. There were genetic differences between the populations in growth rate, but the expression of the differences depended upon the salinity, i.e, there was significant genotype-environment interaction. There were expressions of nonadditive genetic effects in the hybrid crosses, but the direction and magnitude was dependent upon the salinity. There was as much difference between populations from the same estuary as there was between populations from geographically isolated populations.  相似文献

The heritability of oyster (Crassostrea virginica) larval growth rate was estimated to be in the range of 0.25 to 0.50 and a significant part of this genetic variation is of the additive type. Larval growth rate and spat growth rate were found to be highly correlated. These results suggest that a selection program for faster growing larvae and spat would be successful.  相似文献

The acute toxicity of 11 heavy metals to embryos of the American oyster Crassostrea virginica was studied and the concentrations at which 50% of the embryos did not develop were determined. The most toxic metals and their LC50 values were mercury (0.0056 ppm), silver (0.0058 ppm), copper (0.103 ppm) and zinc (0.31 ppm). Those metals that were not as toxic and their LC50 values were nickel (1.18 ppm), lead (2.45 ppm) and cadmium (3.80 ppm). Those metals that were relatively non-toxic and their LC50 values were arsenic (7.5 ppm), chromium (10.3 ppm) and manganese (16.0 ppm). Aluminum was non-toxic at 7.5 ppm, the highest concentration tested.  相似文献

Two Crassostrea virginica populations, differing in fat content, were experimentally exposed to a complex petroleum-hydrocarbon fraction. The hydrocarbons in this mixture were accumulated by both groups of oysters, and their lipid content, as well as the concentration of hydrocarbon in the water, were found to affect the rate and extent of accumulation. Hydrocarbons accumulated were rapidly, although incompletely, discharged when the oysters were transferred to an uncontaminated system. Amounts of hydrocarbons discharged and amounts retained after discharge are probably related to the level of contamination. The data can be interpreted as indicating that equilibration and the occurrence of multiple compartments where hydrocarbons can reside are factors involved in the uptake and retention of nonbiogenic hydrocarbons by oysters. The petroleum hydrocarbons contained in the oysters differed from the contaminating oil by displaying a greater aromatic content. In addition, gas-liquid chromatograms of aliphatic fractions of the hydrocarbons in the oysters rapidly showed a degraded appearance; the possibility that the oysters themselves are modifying the oil cannot be excluded.Contribution No. 3098 from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.  相似文献

The ability of the oyster Crassostrea virginica (Gmelin) to filter, ingest and assimilate 14C-labeled Spartina alterniflora as a carbon source was investigated under laboratory conditions. The oyster assimilated crude-fiber carbon extracted from S. alterniflora with an efficiency of approximately 3%. Enteric bacteria did not enhance this process. The annual average (April 1984 to November 1985) of crude fiber in the Choptank River sub-estuary of the Chesapeake Bay, Maryland, USA, from which the oysters were collected, was 15.7 g l-1 (range 4.3 to 34.3 g l-1). The potential food value of crude fiber to oysters in this system was estimated to be less than 1% of their carbon demand. However, the potential contribution of crude fiber to the carbon requirements of other oyster populations, such as those in southeastern USA, may be as great as 20%, due to higher crudefiber concentrations in the seston.  相似文献

The influence of salinity acclimation on the lipids of gill mitochondrial membranes was investigated in the osmoconforming oyster Crassostrea virginica. Commercially obtained oysters were maintained at 300 or 1000 mOsm for 1 mo at 10°C and fed identical diets of cultured algae. Salinity exposure induced an increase in some of the negatively charged phospholipids. This response may be a mechanism to bind accumulated cations which would otherwise interfere with intracellular metabolism. Lower levels of n6 fatty acids were also observed at high salinities, compared to oysters in dilute seawater and are consistent with the established marine versus freshwater n6 pattern. Arrhenius plots of membrane-bound carnitine palmitoyl transferase activity failed to display a shift in breakpoints, indicating the changes observed did not influence the properties of the membrane.  相似文献

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) genotypes were examined in 1989 in threeCrassostrea virginica (Gmelin) populations native to Chesapeake Bay, USA, and in one population selectively inbred for rapid growth for ten generations. We wished to determine whether this character would be useful as a genetic marker for distinguishing between the inbred line and the native oysters and to determine whether detectable genetic differences exist among present-day native populations ofC. virginica. Thirty mtDNA haplotypes were identified. The average percentage nucleotide difference between native haplotypes was 1.8%. Inbred oysters were characterized by mtDNA haplotypes distinctly different from ancestral native oysters, indicating a high degree of genetic differentiation between the two groups (average percentage mtDNA nucleotide sequence divergence,=21.8%). The common native haplotype was not present in the selectively inbred sample, and six of the seven haplotypes detected in the inbred oysters were not found in the survey of native oysters. Chi-square tests on haplotype frequencies indicated that the native populations were not significantly different from one another. However, the distribution and relatedness of haplotypes suggest that significant change in the oyster gene pool may have occurred over the past few decades.  相似文献

Stocks of eastern oysters, Crassostrea virginica (Gmelin), in mesohaline Chesapeake Bay, USA, exhibit a high degree of inter-annual and spatial variability in recruitment. We found that cumulative oyster spatfall on off-bottom collector plates, measured throughout the summer in 14 years over a span of three decades, was highly positively correlated (r 2 = 0.8) with juvenile oyster recruitment on adjacent oyster bars. Total abundances of juvenile oysters on these bars were, however, generally 99.7% lower than predicted from cumulative seasonal larval settlement on collector plates. We propose that although the number of larvae metamorphosing was the key factor in determining the gross annual pattern of recruitment to these mesohaline oyster bars, the actual magnitude of recruitment was governed by post-settlement processes, such as competition for limited resources and predation. We tested the hypothesis that predation may be partly responsible for high post-settlement juvenile oyster mortality. We performed a series of 3-d field investigations over two summers (1989, 1990) at a mesohaline site, employing cages of various mesh sizes (400, 800, 1500 μm) to protect hatchery-reared spat of 0.5 to 4.0 mm shell height. Mortality rates for spat held for 3 d in the estuary (17.8%) were significantly higher (P = 0.0001) for the smallest spat (0.5 to 2.0 mm) compared with those of 2.01 to 4.0 mm (4.2%). In 1990, but not in 1989, enclosure within 400 and 800 μm mesh cages significantly (P = 0.004) increased survival during 3-d deployments (9.4 and 10.1%, respectively) compared with spat unprotected by mesh cages (21.9%). In a series of laboratory predation studies that used the entire community of invertebrates that could penetrate the cages, microscopic juvenile polyclad flatworms, Stylochus ellipticus, were the only organisms that we observed crawling into living oysters and feeding on oyster tissue. Large flatworms (50 to 200 mm2) are known to be important predators on oysters, but this ability of flatworms that were so small (<ca. 5 mm2) and translucent as to be almost invisible without magnification to feed on immediate post-metamorphic oysters has not been documented previously. Our results suggest that the rate of mortality due to predation in mesohaline Chesapeake Bay is much reduced once spat survive for 2 to 3 weeks post-metamorphosis. Thus, it is likely that predation in the 1 to 2 week period immediately after settlement may be a crucial factor in the structuring of eastern oyster populations. Young oysters (Crassostrea virginica) were continuously exposed to Aroclor® 1254, a polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB), in flowing, unfiltered seawater. Growth rate (height and in-water weight) was significantly reduced (=0.05) in oysters exposed to 5 g/l (ppb) for 24 weeks. Growth rate was not affected in oysters exposed to 1 ppb for 30 weeks. Mortality was not significant in exposed and control groups. In oysters exposed to 5 ppb, greatest PCB residue (whole body) was 425 mg/kg (ppm), 85,000x the concentration in the water, and less than 0.3 ppm was retained after 28 weeks depuration in PCB-free water. In oysters exposed to 1 ppb, greatest residue was 101 ppm, 101,000x the concentration in the water, and less than 0.2 ppm was retained after 12 weeks depuration. Examination of oysters exposed to 5 ppb of this PCB for pathogenesis revealed atrophy of digestive diverticular epithelium and degeneration of vesicular connective tissues concomitant with leukocytic infiltration, but tissue recovery seemed excellent after 12 weeks depuration.Registered trademark, Monsanto Company, St. Louis, Missouri, USA. The net uptake of zinc, cadmium, lead and copper by the common mussel Mytilus edulis (L.) exposed to different conditions was investigated with a view to using this species as an indicator of contamination of the marine environment by these metals. The variables studied were season, position of the mussel in the water column, water salinity, water temperature, and the simultaneous presence of all four metals. Each of these 5 variables affected the net uptake of some or all of the metals studied under some conditions. Seasonal variation in concentrations of zinc, cadmium and copper was found in samples collected at three separate locations. The relationship of seasonal variation to tissue weight and absorption route of the metals is discussed. Near to freshwater inputs of trace metals, the concentrations of zinc, cadmium and lead in mussels were found to vary according to the depth at which the mussels were collected; in summer when freshwater run-off is less, this effect was absent. Low salinities did not affect the net uptake of zinc by mussels, but increased the net uptake of cadmium and decreased that of lead. Low temperatures had no effect on the net uptake of zinc or lead; the net uptake of cadmium was unaffected by low temperatures at high salinities but was decreased by low temperatures at low salinities. The presence of the other metals had no effect on the individual net uptake of either zinc, cadmium or lead. A sampling programme was devised to eliminate the effects of these environmental variables and to allow the use of M. edulis as an indicator of zinc, cadmium and lead in marine and estuarine environments. In contrast to the other metals, the net uptake of copper by the mussel was extremely erratic, and was affected by salinity and temperature changes and by the presence of the other metals and changes in their relative concentrations. The effects of other metals on the net uptake of copper cannot be easily eliminated or allowed for; it is, therefore, suggested that the mussel should not be used as an indicator of copper in the marine environment.  相似文献
