A Before‐ After Control‐ Impact Paired (BACIP) model was used to evaluate the effectiveness of phytoremediation treatment on reduction of bentazon concentrations in shallow groundwater at a study site in Louisiana. Two different statistical approaches were made to evaluate the impact to this test site from the remediation program through time. Data were evaluated by Bayesian analysis of variance test methods. Data sets were unique in that the control data used for impact evaluation, as compared to before and after data, were compiled from groundwater upgradient monitoring wells existing prior to remediation. The statistical model supports the hypothesis that the phytoremediation program has positively impacted groundwater at the study site. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

Moisture sorption characteristics of microbial polysaccharide (Ps.C101) from Pseudomonas caryophilli and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) blends have been carried out at 27°C for water activity from 0.1 to 0.9. The sorption data was used to fit six different sorption isotherm models proposed in literature. The model constants were determined by linear fitting of the sorption equations. The ranges of applicability of water activity for isotherm models reported in this paper lie in between 0.1 and 0.4 for Brunaur–Emmet–Teller (BET) model (monolayer), and in between 0.2 and 0.9 for other models. The value of the coefficient of determination (R2 = 0.97 ± 0.02) confirms the applicability of the equations studied.  相似文献

To provide reliable K(d) data for Cs required for the performance assessment of cement-based radioactive waste repositories, two complementary approaches were followed. First, Cs sorption was determined on a range of hydrated cement paste (HCP) and mortar samples of CEM I and CEM V for different degradation states and solution compositions, as well as on some single mineral phases. Second, a surface complexation-diffuse layer model previously developed by Pointeau et al. [Pointeau, I., Marmier, N., Fromage, F., Fedoroff, M., Giffaut, E., 2001. Cs and Pb uptake by CSH phases of hydrated cement. Material Research Society Symposium Proceedings, 663, 105-113] for Cs sorption on synthetic CSH phases was simplified to facilitate its application to whole HCP and mortars or concrete, following re-assessment of the model parameters. All measurements were compared with model predictions. The sorption data obtained on the different solid phases as a function of conditions corroborate that CSH minerals are the main sorbing phase for Cs in HCP. The data also clearly show the important influence of pH and the dissolved concentration of Na, K and Ca on K(d). It is further suggested that a decrease of pH is concomitant with a decrease of the Ca/Si ratio and a corresponding increase in surface sites with high affinity for Cs and, thus, K(d). Elevated concentrations of cations able to compete with Cs for these sites lead to a decrease of K(d), on the other hand. The simplified model was applied to the sorption measurements performed within this study as well as to a variety of literature data, mainly K(d) values for a variety of fresh HCP and mortar or concrete samples based on different samples of Ordinary Portland Cement as well as blended cements. The results show that the model can be applied reasonably well to a very large variety of conditions in terms of solid and solution compositions that cover a range of K(d) values from 10(-4) to ca. 3.2m(3)/kg. The large scatter typically observed for Cs sorption, especially on fresh HCP samples prepared from different formulations, can be explained quantitatively by the variable concentrations of Na and K in the respective solutions, which compete with Cs for fixation sites. On the other hand, the comparatively uniform conditions in degraded HCP typically render the prediction of K(d) values less uncertain than in case of fresh HCP.  相似文献

An assessment of the risk to human health and the environment associated with the presence of organic contaminants (OCs) in landfills necessitates reliable predictive models. The overall objectives of this study were to (1) conduct column experiments to measure the fate and transport of an OC in a simulated solid waste mixture, (2) compare the results of column experiments to model predictions using HYDRUS-1D (version 4.13), a contaminant fate and transport model that can be parameterized to simulate the laboratory experimental system, and (3) determine model input parameters from independently conducted batch experiments. Experiments were conducted in which sorption only and sorption plus biodegradation influenced OC transport. HYDRUS-1D can reasonably simulate the fate and transport of phenol in an anaerobic and fully saturated waste column in which biodegradation and sorption are the prevailing fate processes. The agreement between model predictions and column data was imperfect (i.e., within a factor of two) for the sorption plus biodegradation test and the error almost certainly lies in the difficulty of measuring a biodegradation rate that is applicable to the column conditions. Nevertheless, a biodegradation rate estimate that is within a factor of two or even five may be adequate in the context of a landfill, given the extended retention time and the fact that leachate release will be controlled by the infiltration rate which can be minimized by engineering controls.  相似文献

A process model was developed to simulate elemental mercury sorption by activated carbon in three distinct beds, namely a confined, a semi-fluidized, and a fluidized bed. The model involved the coupling of a kinetic model based on the mechanisms of surface equilibrium and external mass transfer, and a material balance model based on the tank-in-series approach. For surface equilibrium, three different equilibrium laws were used in the model, namely the Henry's Law, the Langmuir isotherm and the Freundlich isotherm. Literature mercury sorption data were used to determine the best-fit values of parameters for these equilibrium expressions. The parameter-fitted model was then used to simulate mercury sorption processes in the three distinct beds. The simulation parameters were mercury concentration, gas flow rate, adsorption temperature and the degree of semi-fluidization. The simulation results have indicated that the model is capable of describing the literature available mercury sorption data. All the three surface equilibrium laws appear to simulate the adsorption profiles equally well mainly because the sorption process occurs in an extremely low concentration range. The simulation results for the three distinct beds have suggested that the confined bed has the best mercury control performance; however, it generates the highest pressure-drop across the bed. A fluidized bed creates the least pressure drop; however, its sorption performance is poor. A semi-fluidized bed offers acceptable performance with affordable pressure-drops and can be a practical candidate for the process.  相似文献

Heavy metal-bearing waste usually needs solidification/stabilization (s/s) prior to landfill to lower the leaching rate. Cement is the most adaptable binder currently available for the immobilisation of heavy metals. The selection of cements and operating parameters depends upon an understanding of chemistry of the system. This paper discusses interactions of heavy metals and cement phases in the solidification/stabilisation process. It provides a clarification of heavy metal effects on cement hydration. According to the decomposition rate of minerals, heavy metals accelerate the hydration of tricalcium silicate (C3S) and Portland cement, although they retard the precipitation of portlandite due to the reduction of pH resulted from hydrolyses of heavy metal ions. The chemical mechanism relevant to the accelerating effect of heavy metals is considered to be H+ attacks on cement phases and the precipitation of calcium heavy metal double hydroxides, which consumes calcium ions and then promotes the decomposition of C3S. In this work, molecular models of calcium silicate hydrate gel are presented based on the examination of 29Si solid-state magic angle spinning/nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS/NMR). This paper also reviews immobilisation mechanisms of heavy metals in hydrated cement matrices, focusing on the sorption, precipitation and chemical incorporation of cement hydration products. It is concluded that further research on the phase development during cement hydration in the presence of heavy metals and thermodynamic modelling is needed to improve effectiveness of cement-based s/s and extend this waste management technique.  相似文献

Aqueous phase adsorption of three textile dyes onto a granular activated carbon produced from acid activation of almond shells is presented. Primarily, the sorption of three basic dyes, methylene blue, rhodamine b, and malachite green oxalate were studied. Four models, the Freundlich, the Langmuir, the Redlich-Peterson, and the Toth isotherms were compared for their quality of fit to the single-solute sorption data. Next, sorption of the three likely binary systems was examined. Four bi-solute models, the extended Langmuir with and without an interaction term, the extended Redlich-Peterson with an interaction term, and the empirical extended Freundlich model were used to predict sorption in the binary systems. Nonlinearly determined constants of the corresponding single-solute isotherms were used in the binary models to compare with experimental binary sorption data. For the single-solute system, the three-parameter models of the Redlich-Peterson and the Toth isotherms outperformed the Langmuir and Freundlich models. The empirical extended Freundlich model produced the closest comparison to the binary data in each system. In general, the nonlinear method provided a simple and computationally effective technique of producing optimal fitting parameters for the bi-solute sorption models.  相似文献

Solid waste management presses for effective landfill design and operation. While planning and operating a landfill (LF) or a landraise (LR), choices need to be made regarding: (1) LF-LR morphology (base shape, side slopes, final cover thickness, LR/LF height/depth); (2) cell geometry (height, length, slopes); and (3) operation parameters (waste density, working face length, cover thicknesses). These parameters affect LF/LR capacity, operation lifespan and construction/ operation costs. In this paper, relationships are generated between capacity (C, space available for waste) and the above parameters. Incorporating real data into simulation kgamma A1.38, runs, two types of functions are developed: first, C = where A is the LF/LR base area size and kgamma a base shape-dependent coefficient; and second, C = alpha(p,gamma,A) + delta(p,gamma,A)Xp for every parameter p, where Xp is the value of p and alpha(p,gamma,A) and delta(p,gamma,A) are parameter- and base (shape/size)-specific coefficients. Moreover, the relationship between LF depth and LR height that balances excavation volume with cover material, is identified. Another result is that, for a symmetrical combination of LF/LR, with base surface area shape between square and 1:2 orthogonal, and final density between 500 and 800 kg m(-3), waste quantity placed ranges from 1.76A1.38 to 2.55A1.38 tons. The significance of such functions is obvious, as they allow the analyst to investigate alternative LF/LR schemes and make trade-off analyses.  相似文献

Studies on the moisture sorption characteristics of chitosan/polyethylene oxide (PEO) blended films have been carried out at 27 °C for water activity (a w) from 0.1 to 0.9. The sorption data at different a w were used to fit 12 different sorption isotherm models proposed in the literature. The model constants were determined by linear fitting of the sorption equations. The ranges of applicability of water activity for the isotherms reported in the article lie between 0.11 to 0.44 (monomolecular layer) for the BET model and between 0.11 to 0.86 (monolayer & multilayer’s) for Smith, Caurie, Bradley and Oswin. The water activity for Halsey and Chung & Pfost models lies between 0.44 to 0.86 (multilayer) and 0.33 to 0.86 for Henderson and Freundlich models and 0.11 to 0.65 for Kuhn, Linear and Iglesias & Chirife models. The high coefficient of determination R 2 (ranges from 0.82 to 1) confirms the applicability of the equations employed. The study on the application of such water activity data of chitosan/PEO blended films on different model equations will be helpful in prediction of durability and functional behavior of moisture sensitive biopolymeric films  相似文献

The application of biosolids such as sewage sludge is a concern, because of the potential release of toxic metals after decomposition of the organic matter. The effect of application of sewage sludge (Sw) and compost (C) to the soil (S) on the Cu and Cd sorption, distribution and the quality of the dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the soil, was investigated under controlled conditions. Visible spectrophotometry, infrared spectroscopy, sorption isotherms (simple and competitive sorption systems), and sequential extraction methods were used. The E4/E6 (lambda at 465 and 665 nm) ratio and the infrared spectra (IR) of DOM showed an aromatic behaviour in compost-soil (C-S); in contrast sewage sludge-soil (Sw-S) showed an aliphatic behaviour. Application of either Sw or C increased the Cu sorption capacity of soil. The Cd sorption decreased only in soil with a competitive metal system. The availability of Cu was low due to its occurrence in the acid soluble fraction (F3). The Cu concentration varied in accordance with the amounts of Cu added. The highest Cd concentration was found in the exchangeable fraction (F2). The Sw and C applications did not increase the Cd availability in the soil.  相似文献

Sorption onto minerals in the geologic setting may help to mitigate potential radionuclide transport from the proposed high-level radioactive waste repository at Yucca Mountain (YM), Nevada. An approach is developed for including aspects of more mechanistic sorption models into current probabilistic performance assessment (PA) calculations. Data on water chemistry from the vicinity of YM are screened and used to calculate the ranges in parameters that could exert control on radionuclide sorption behavior. Using a diffuse-layer surface complexation model, sorption parameters for Np(V) and U(VI) are calculated based on the chemistry of each water sample. Model results suggest that lognormal probability distribution functions (PDFs) of sorption parameters are appropriate for most of the samples, but the calculated range is almost five orders of magnitude for Np(V) sorption and nine orders of magnitude for U(VI) sorption. Calculated sorption parameters may also vary at a single sample location by almost a factor of 10 over time periods of the order of days to years due to changes in chemistry, although sampling and analytical methodologies may introduce artifacts that add uncertainty to the evaluation of these fluctuations. Finally, correlation coefficients between the calculated Np(V) and U(VI) sorption parameters can be included as input into PA sampling routines, so that the value selected for one radionuclide sorption parameter is conditioned by its statistical relationship to the others. The approaches outlined here can be adapted readily to current PA efforts, using site-specific information to provide geochemical constraints on PDFs for radionuclide transport parameters.  相似文献

In this study, contaminant leaching from three different secondary materials (demolition waste, municipal solid waste incineration ash, and blast furnace slag) to groundwater is assessed by numerical modeling. Reactive transport simulations for a noise protection dam and a road dam (a typical German autobahn), in which secondary materials are reused as base layers, were performed to predict the breakthrough of a conservative tracer (i.e., a salt) and sorbing contaminants (e.g., PAHs like naphthalene and phenanthrene or heavy metals) at the groundwater table. The dam constructions have a composite architecture with soil covers in inclined layers and distinct contrasts in the unsaturated hydraulic properties of the used materials. Capillary barrier effects result in strong spatial variabilities of flow and transport velocities. Contaminant breakthrough curves at the groundwater table show significant tailing due to slow sorption kinetics and a wide distribution of travel times. While conservative tracer breakthrough depends primarily on subsoil hydraulic properties, equilibrium distribution coefficients and sorption kinetics represent additional controlling factors for contaminant spreading. Hence, the three secondary materials show pronounced differences in the temporal development of leached contaminant concentrations with consequences for breakthrough times and peak concentrations at the groundwater table. Significant concentration reductions due to dispersion occur only if the source concentrations decrease significantly prior to the arrival of the contaminant at the groundwater table. Biodegradation causes significant reduction of breakthrough concentrations only if flow velocities are low.  相似文献

The pesticide impact rating index (PIRI) has been integrated with a Geographic Information System (GIS) to enable regional assessment of pesticide impact on groundwater and surface water resources. The GIS version of PIRI (PIRI-GIS) was used to assess the impact of pre-planting atrazine use in the pine plantations on the Gnangara Mound, Western Australia. The impact on groundwater was found to be spatially variable, mainly dependent on soil type and depth to groundwater, because land use variables were spatially constant. Areas with the greatest impact on groundwater were those where the soil had a low sorption capacity for atrazine. Knowledge of the spatial distribution of the sorption coefficient based on organic carbon (K oc) for atrazine was found to significantly improve the results from PIRI-GIS. Average values for K oc (i.e. based on overseas data) were too low for most of the local soil types, resulting in a general overestimation of pesticide impact on groundwater resources, but an underestimation of impact in areas that should be of greatest concern (i.e. where the soil has a low sorption capacity for atrazine).  相似文献

It is now well accepted and demonstrated that calcium silicate, calcium aluminate and calcium sulfo aluminate (ettringite, AFm) phases exhibit a good capability to fix metals and metalloids. Unfortunately the role of minor phases and especially calcium-ferric aluminate phase, shorthand C4AF is not well defined. In other systems like in soils or sediments iron phases play a key role in the fixation of pollutant. In cement sorption isotherms, indicated that various metals can be retained by the C4AF hydrated products. Therefore the capabilities of those phase to retain heavy metal should not be neglected. Previous investigations have shown that the minerals formed during the hydration of C4AF are similar to those formed from C3A (pure tri-calcium aluminate) under comparable conditions. Nevertheless no investigation was conducted at the molecular level and there is still a controversy whether Fe substitutes for Al in the hydrated minerals in whole or in part, or if it forms FeOOH clusters scattered throughout the matrix. In this context we have conducted XAS experiments using synchrotron radiation. It was found that the hydration of C4AF forms C3AH6 (hydrogarnet) in which Fe randomly substitutes for Al as well as an amorphous FeOOH phase. Intermediate products like AFm (i.e., an ill organized lamellar phase) are also formed but rapidly evolve to C3AH6; iron does not seem to be incorporated in the AFm structure.  相似文献

This paper presents a case study of a Long Island. New York, landfill where methane and VOC gases were migrating off-site. The municipally owned and operated Port Washington Landfill located adjacent to residential housing was opened in 1974 and was placed on the U.S. EPA Superfund (rehabilitation) list in 1982 because of odour complaints. Community concerns have focused on combustible gases, odour control, and exposure to trace contaminants. A comprehensive data base and corrective action program was initiated to determine: (1) the extent of off-site volatile organic compounds (VOC) migration; (2) measures to control migration and emissions; and (3) impacts on VOC concentrations under residential areas. Full data reports and monthly interpretations have been provided to the citizenry. Results to date indicate that start-up and operation of the extraction system have significantly reduced off-site VOC concentrations.  相似文献

Since carbon compounds are the main component of dense nonaqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs), the end products of all in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) will include carbon dioxide. If the production rate of carbon dioxide exceeds the capacity of water to remove the carbon dioxide, degassing will occur. The uncontrolled carbon dioxide gas may change the flow patterns, remobilize the pooled DNAPL, transport DNAPL vapor, and reduce the relative permeability to the aqueous phase. Under high pH buffered conditions, most of the carbon dioxide will be dissolved in water. In this study, potassium permanganate oxidation of tetrachloroethylene (PCE) was conducted using a sodium carbonate buffered solution (1 g/L, pH = 10.6 ± 0.1) at three different temperatures (5, 10, and 20°C) and three potassium permanganate concentrations (0.2, 1, and 5 g/L). Extensive kinetic studies suggest that the overall oxidation is a second‐order reaction and pseudo‐first‐order with respect to PCE and potassium permanganate, respectively. The second‐order rate constant and the activation energy were 0.028 ± 0.001 M?1s?1 at 20°C and 43.9 ± 2.85 kJ/M, respectively. This study provides a base for further experimental and field studies on potassium permanganate oxidation of PCE under natural or artificial high pH buffered conditions. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

In this study a system analysis is presented for a European registration system for hazardous waste shipment notifications. The administrative procedures for the notifications according to the European Community (EC) directives are in use in several Member States, among others the Netherlands and Belgium. The new system should enable efficient notification procedures, without the large number of forms and the delays in obtaining transit and import permissions that are currently observed. Only one form is needed for each hazardous waste transport within the EC, accompanying the transport. The system also allows the generation of compiled information for all EC Member States by using a database structure. Rather than manually administrating the information of the forms, this information is transmitted and stored electronically. With an estimated number of 100,000 transfrontier transports of hazardous waste per year in the European Community, this greatly decreases time and costs for aggregating hazardous waste transport data. This aggregated information is necessary for the implementation, evaluation and further development of a coherent EC waste management policy for hazardous waste treatment and disposal.  相似文献

The distribution between hardened cement paste and cement pore water of selected concrete admixtures (BZMs), i.e., sulfonated naphthalene-formaldehyde condensate (NS), lignosulfonate (LS) and a gluconate-containing plasticiser used at the Paul Scherrer Institute for waste conditioning, was measured. Sorption data were fitted to a single-site Langmuir isotherm with affinity constants K=(19+/-4)dm(3)g(-1) for NS, K=(2.1+/-0.6) dm(3)g(-1) for LS and sorption capacities q=(81+/-16)g kg(-1) for NS, q=(43+/-8)g kg(-1) for LS. In the case of gluconate, a two-site Langmuir sorption model was necessary to fit the data satisfactorily. Sorption parameters for gluconate were K(1)=(2+/-1)x10(6)dm(3)mol(-1) and q(1)=(0.04+/-0.02)mol kg(-1) for the stronger binding site and K(2)=(2.6+/-1.1)x10(3)dm(3)mol(-1) and q(2)=(0.7+/-0.3)mol kg(-1) for the weaker binding site. Desorption of these BZMs from cement pastes and pore water in cement specimens prepared in the presence of the BZMs were then used to test the model. It was found that only minor parts of NS and LS could be mobilised as long as the cement composition was intact, whereas the sorption of gluconate was found to be reversible. The Langmuir model makes valuable predictions in the qualitative sense in that the pore water concentration of the BZMs is reduced by several orders of magnitude as compared to the initial concentrations. In view of the necessity for conservative predictions used in the safety analysis for disposal of radioactive waste, however, the predictions are unsatisfactory in that the measured pore water concentrations of NS and LS were considerably larger than the predicted values. This conclusion does not apply for gluconate, because its concentration in cement pore water was below the detection limit of approximately 50 nM.  相似文献

Using a data set derived from 480 soil samples, pedotransfer functions for the coefficient (K) and the exponent (m) of the Freundlich sorption isotherm were developed. The functions were validated with data from 135 independent soil samples. We found high goodness-of-fit for the approaches of the Freundlich coefficient, whereas the efficiency of the models for predicting the independent samples should be improved. For the Freundlich exponent, the mean value of the parameterisation data set (m = 0.88) served as a better predictor than any of the developed functions. These findings contribute to the interpretation stated by previous authors that variation of the Freundlich exponent is of minor importance and therefore negligible in the course of sorption modelling.  相似文献
