The high ozone episode in the greater Seoul area (GSA) for the period of 27 July–1 August 1997 was modeled by the California Institute of Technology (CIT) three-dimensional photochemical model. During the period, ozone concentrations around 140 ppb were observed for 2 days. Two sets of diagnostic wind fields were constructed by using observations from the weather stations operated by the Korea Meteorological Administration. One set of wind fields utilized only observations from the surface weather stations (SWS) and the other set also utilized observations from the automatic weather stations (AWS) that were more densely distributed than the SWS. The results showed that utilizing observations from the AWS could represent fine variations in the wind field such as those caused by topography. A better wind field gave a more reasonable spatial distribution of ozone concentrations. The model performance of ozone prediction was also improved to some extent, but only marginally acceptable owing to large day-to-day variations. Overshoots of primary pollutants particularly for NO2 were observed as pollutants were accumulated where low wind speeds were maintained. More precise information on diurnal and daily variations in emissions was warranted in order to better model the photochemical phenomena over the GSA.  相似文献

Concentrations of elemental carbon (EC) and organic carbon (OC) in particles at Seoul and Cheju Island, Korea were observed in 1994. PM10 and PM2.5 were collected by a modified SCAQS (Southern California Air Quality Study) sampler from Seoul during June 1994 and PM2.5 were collected by a low-volume sampler at Cheju Island during July and August 1994. The selective thermal oxidation method with MnO2 catalyst was used for analysis. The EC concentrations from Seoul were higher than those at Los Angeles, USA during the SCAQS study while the OC concentrations were comparable to those during the SCAQS study. At Cheju Island, the OC concentrations were higher than those at other clean areas in the world but the EC concentrations were lower than or comparable to those at other clean areas in the world. The OC to EC ratios of Seoul suggest that the carbonaceous species are mostly from primary emission sources. In Cheju, during July 1994 air pollutant levels were high and it was suggested that atmospheric transformation/transport of organics and biogenic emissions were main sources of carbonaceous species in particles. The carbonaceous species levels were low during August 1994 and it was suggested that the levels could be considered as marine background concentrations in the region during summer.  相似文献

This study considers the characteristics of carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO(2)), ozone (O(3)) and sulfur dioxide (SO(2)) in two major South Korean cities, including the capital city of Seoul, over a time period of 7-8 years. Changes in the annual mean and percentiles of the daily 1-h maximum and other hour-based concentrations varied according to the compound and city type. Seasonal variations varied according to the compound, yet not with the city type. Both Seoul and Taegu exhibited lower O(3) concentrations in July compared to other summer months. There was a high degree of correlation between the daily 1- and 8-h maximum or daily mean concentrations of all compounds in both cities, with an R(2) of 0.66-0.90 at p<0.0001. It was indicated that for CO and O(3), the 8-h standard was more stringent than the 1-h standard, while for NO(2) and SO(2), the 1-h standard was more stringent than the 24-h standard. The correlation coefficients between the daily 1-h maximum and daily mean concentrations decreased as the maximum concentration values of NO(2), O(3 ), and SO(2) increased in the two cities. For all the target compounds, Seoul recorded a substantially higher frequency of days with concentrations above the relevant 1-, 8-, and 24-h standards compared to Taegu.  相似文献

The CO2 and N2O soil emissions at a rice paddy in Mase, Japan, were measured by enclosures during a fallow winter season. The Mase site, one of the AsiaFlux Network sites in Japan, has been monitored for moisture, heat, and CO2 fluxes since August 1999. The paddy soil was found to be a source of both CO2 and N2O flux from this experiment. The CO2 and N2O fluxes ranged from -27.6 to 160.4 microg CO2/m2/sec (average of 49.1 +/- 42.7 microg CO2/m2/sec) and from -4.4 to 129.5 ng N2O/m2/sec (average of 40.3 +/- 35.6 ng N2O/m2/ sec), respectively. A bimodal trend, which has a sub-peak in the morning around 10:00 a.m. and a primary peak between 2:00 and 3:00 p.m., was observed. Gas fluxes increased with soil temperature, but this temperature dependency seemed to occur only on the calm days. Average CO2 and N2O fluxes were 27.7 microg CO2/m2/sec and 13.4 ng N2O/m2/sec, with relatively small fluctuation during windy days, while averages of 69.3 microg CO2/m2/sec and 65.8 ng N2O/m2/sec were measured during calm days. This relationship was thought to be a result of strong surface winds, which enhance gas exchange between the soil surface and the atmosphere, thus reducing the gas emissions from soil surfaces.  相似文献

This study considers the characteristics of ground-level ozone (O3) in five Korean cities over a time period of 6-8 years. The focus of this study is daily maximum 1-hr and 8-hr concentrations. For all the study cities in the period examined, the mean and most of the percentiles (5, 10, 25, 50, 75, 90, and 95) for the daily maximum 1-hr and 8-hr concentrations showed increasing trends, although not all trends were statistically significant. The daily maximum 1-hr and 8-hr concentrations slowly increased during late winter, and peaks were attained during the summer season (from May to September). All the selected cities exhibited a high degree of correlation between their daily maximum 8-hr and 1-hr concentrations. The daily maximum 8-hr concentrations, which were climatologically equivalent to the Korean 1 hr/100 parts per billion (ppb) standard, were higher than the current 8 hr/60 ppb by a difference of 8-16 ppb. Compared with other cities in Korea, Seoul recorded a substantially higher frequency of days and hours with concentrations above 1 hr/100 ppb, and a higher frequency of days with concentrations above 8 hr/60 ppb and 8 hr/80 ppb. Seoul also recorded a substantially higher frequency of hours with concentrations above 1 hr/100 ppb than days with concentrations above 1 hr/100 ppb, implying that on some days severe exceedances persisted for more than one hour per day. During multiple-day episodes a North Pacific High dominated Korea, which is quite typical in Korea during the summer season.  相似文献

Urban-scale air pollutants for sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter > or = 10 microm, and ozone (O3) were simulated over the Seoul metropolitan area, Korea, during the period of July 2-11, 2002, and their predicting capabilities were discussed. The Air Pollution Model (TAPM) and the highly disaggregated anthropogenic and the biogenic gridded emissions (1 km x 1 km) recently prepared by the Korean Ministry of Environment were applied. Wind fields with observational nudging in the prognostic meteorological model TAPM are optionally adopted to comparatively examine the meteorological impact on the prediction capabilities of urban-scale air pollutants. The result shows that the simulated concentrations of secondary air pollutant largely agree with observed levels with an index of agreement (IOA) of >0.6, whereas IOAs of approximately 0.4 are found for most primary pollutants in the major cities, reflecting the quality of emission data in the urban area. The observationally nudged wind fields with higher IOAs have little effect on the prediction for both primary and secondary air pollutants, implying that the detailed wind field does not consistently improve the urban air pollution model performance if emissions are not well specified. However, the robust highest concentrations are better described toward observations by imposing observational nudging, suggesting the importance of wind fields for the predictions of extreme concentrations such as robust highest concentrations, maximum levels, and >90th percentiles of concentrations for both primary and secondary urban-scale air pollutants.  相似文献

A speciated, hourly, and gridded air pollutants emission modeling system (SHEMS) was developed and applied in predicting hourly nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and ozone (O3) levels in the Seoul Metropolitan Area (SMA). The primary goal of the SHEMS was to produce a systemized emission inventory for air pollutants including ozone precursors for modeling air quality in urban areas. The SHEMS is principally composed of three parts: (1) a pre-processor to process emission factors, activity levels, and spatial and temporal information using a geographical information system; (2) an emission model for each source type; and (3) a post-processor to produce report and input data for air quality models through database modeling. The source categories in SHEMS are point, area, mobile, natural, and other sources such as fugitive emissions. The emission database produced by SHEMS contains 22 inventoried compounds: sulfur dioxide, NO2, carbon monoxide, and 19 speciated volatile organic compounds. To validate SHEMS, the emission data were tested with the Urban Airshed Model to predict NO2 and O3 concentrations in the SMA during selected episode days in 1994. The results turned out to be reliable in describing temporal variation and spatial distribution of those pollutants.  相似文献

To aid the studies of long-term impact assessment of cumulative ozone (O3) exposures, the representative 8-hr O3 pollution patterns have been identified over the Greater Seoul Area (GSA) in Korea. Principal component analysis and two-stage clustering techniques were used to identify the representative O3 patterns, and numerical and observational analyses were also used to interpret the identified horizontal distribution patterns. The results yielded three major O3 distribution patterns, and each of the three patterns was found to have strong correlations with local and synoptic meteorological conditions over the GSA. For example, pattern 1, accounting for 46% of O3 concentration distributions, mostly occurred under relatively weak westerly synoptic winds. The predominant features of this pattern were infrequent high O3 levels but a distinct gradient of O3 concentration from the western coastal area to the eastern inland area that was mainly induced by the local sea breeze. Pattern 2, accounting for 31% of O3 concentration distributions, was found with higher O3 levels in the western coastal area but lower in the eastern inland area. This is due to the modified sea breeze under the relatively stronger easterly opposing synoptic wind, affecting the high O3 occurrence in the western coastal area only. However, pattern 3, accounting for 21% of O3 concentration distributions, showed significantly higher O3 concentrations over the whole GSA mainly due to the retarded and slow-moving sea-breeze front under the weak opposing synoptic flow. Modeling study also indicated that local and synoptic meteorological processes play a major role in determining the high O3 concentration distribution patterns over the GSA.  相似文献

Impacts of ozone on the growth and yield of field-grown winter wheat   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Seed of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv Riband) was sown on 29 August 1992 in eight field plots. Four plots were exposed to elevated ozone (O(3)) concentrations on 16 days between 29 August and 2 October 1992, for 6 h day(-1), and on 27 days between 29 March and 24 August 1993, for 7 h day(-1). Mean daily O(3) concentrations were approximately 30 and 80 nmol mol(-1) in ambient and fumigated plots, respectively. Plants were sampled on 5 November (1992), 14 January, 16 February, 1 April, 25 May, 23 June and 24 August (1993). No visible symptoms of O(3) damage or premature senescence were observed at any time over the course of the experiment. Exposure to elevated O(3) decreased the above ground biomass by reducing plant density and individual plant relative growth rate. However, there was no significant influence of the pollutant on the growth of the root relative to the shoot. Assessment of yield characteristics at the final harvest revealed an O(3)-induced decrease in the number of grains per ear, as a result of fewer grains per spikelet and an increase in the number of infertile florets per spikelet. No significant effects of the pollutant on the number of ears per plant, spikelets per ear, or 1000 grain weight were found. As a result of the combined effects on the number of grains per ear and the decrease in plant density and growth rate, O(3) exposure reduced grain and straw yields (tonnes ha(-1)) by 13 and 8%, respectively. However, no significant change in the partitioning of dry matter between the grain and the straw was observed in fumigated plots. The findings are discussed within the context of United Nation Economic Commission for Europe critical level guidelines for the protection of crop yields, in relation to their application to winter-sown crops.  相似文献

The Nested Grid Model (NGM) is a primitive-equation meteorological model that is routinely exercised over North America for forecasting purposes by the National Meteorological Center. While prognostic meteorological models are being increasingly used to drive air quality models, their use in conducting annual simulations requires significant resources. NGM estimates of wind fields and other meteorological variables provide an attractive alternative since they are typically archived and readily available for an entire year. Preliminary evaluation of NGM winds during the summer of 1992 for application to the region surrounding the Grand Canyon National Park showed serious shortcomings. The NGM winds along the borders between California, Arizona and Mexico tend to be northwesterly with a speed of about 6 m/sec, while the observed flow is predominantly southerly at about 2-5 m/sec. The mesoscale effect of a thermal low pressure area over the highly heated Southern California and western Arizona deserts does not appear to be represented by the NGM because of its coarse resolution and the use of sparse observations in that region. Tracer simulations and statistical evaluation against special high resolution observations of winds in the southwest United States clearly demonstrate the northwest bias in NGM winds and its adverse effect on predictions of an air quality model. The "enhanced" NGM winds, in which selected wind observations are incorporated in the NGM winds using a diagnostic meteorological model provide additional confirmation on the primary cause of the northwest bias. This study has demonstrated that in situations where limited resources prevent the use of prognostic meteorological models, previously archived coarse resolution wind fields in which additional observations are incorporated to correct known biases provide an attractive option.  相似文献

Meteorological conditions have a decisive impact on surface ozone concentrations. In this study, an empirical model is used to explain the interdependence of ozone and grosswetterlagen. Different meteorological parameters such as air temperature, global solar radiation, relative humidity, wind direction and wind speed are used. Additional nitric oxide (NO) was taken as a representative for the emission situation and ozone maximum of the preceding day in order to evaluate the development of the photochemical situation. The dataset includes data collected over a period of three years (1992–1994) from three stations outside of Munich and one in the center of Munich. All values become variables by calculating means, sums or maxima of the basic dataset consisting of half-hour means. Seasonal periodicity of data is detected with Fourier analysis and eliminated by a division method after computing a seasonal index. The dataset is divided into three different grosswetterlagen groups, depending on main wind direction. One mostly cyclonic (westerly winds), onemixed (alternating winds) and one onlyanticyclonic (easterly winds). The last is completed with one summertime group including values from April to August. Factor analysis is performed for each group to obtain independent linear variable combinations. Overall, relative humidity is the dominant parameter, a typical value indicating meteorological conditions during a grosswetterlage. Linear multiple regression analysis is performed using the factors obtained to reveal how the ozone concentrations are explained in terms of meteorological parameters and NO. The results improve from cyclonic to anticyclonic grosswetterlagen in conformance with the increasing significance of photochemistry, indicated by the high solar radiation and high temperature, and the low relative humidity and low wind speed. The explained variance r2 reaches its maximum with more than 50 % of the time in Munich center. This empirical model is applicable to the forecasting of local ozone maximum concentrations with a total standard error deviation of 8.5 to 12.8 % and, if ozone concentrations exceed 80 ppb, with a standard error deviation of 5.4 to 9.5 %.  相似文献

Peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) in air has been well known as the indicator of photochemical smog due to its frequent occurrences in Seoul metropolitan area. This study was implemented to assess the distribution characteristics of atmospheric PAN in association with relevant parameters measured concurrently. During a full year period in 2011, PAN was continuously measured at hourly intervals at two monitoring sites, Gwang Jin (GJ) and Gang Seo (GS) in the megacity of Seoul, South Korea. The annual mean concentrations of PAN during the study period were 0.64 ± 0.49 and 0.57 ± 0.46 ppb, respectively. The seasonal trends of PAN generally exhibited dual peaks in both early spring and fall, regardless of sites. Their diurnal trends were fairly comparable to each other. There was a slight time lag (e.g., 1 h) in the peak occurrence pattern between O3 and PAN, as the latter trended to peak after the maximum UV irradiance period (16:00 (GJ) and 17:00 (GS)). The concentrations of PAN generally exhibited strong correlations with particulates. The results of this study suggest that PAN concentrations were affected sensitively by atmospheric stability, the wet deposition of NO2, wind direction, and other factors.

The behavior of particulate matter (PM) during high-concentration episodes was investigated using monitoring data from Guui station, a comprehensive air monitoring station in Seoul, Korea, from January 2008 to March 2010. Five non-Asian dust (ND) episodes and two Asian dust (AD) episodes of high PM concentrations were selected for the study. During the ND episode, primary air pollutants accumulated due to low wind speeds, and PM2.5 increased along with most other air pollutants. Particles larger than PM2.5 were also high since these particles were generated by vehicular traffic rather than wind erosion. During strong AD episodes, PM10–2.5 primarily increased and gaseous primary air pollutants decreased under high wind speeds. However, even during the AD episode, PM2.5 and gaseous primary air pollutants increased when the effects of AD were weak and wind speeds were low. This study corroborates that accumulation of air pollutants due to a drop in surface wind speed plays an important role in short-term high-concentration occurrences. However, low wind speeds could not be directly linked to local emissions because a significant portion of accumulated air pollutants resulted from long-range transport.  相似文献

This paper presents the first attempt to apply the Mesoscale Meteorological Model (MM5)-Community Multi-Scale Air Quality Model (CMAQ) model system to simulate ground-level ozone (O3) over the continental Southeast Asia (CSEA) region for both hindcast and forecast purposes. Hindcast simulation was done over the CSEA domain for two historical O3 episodes, January 26-29, 2004 (January episode, northeast monsoon) and March 24-26, 2004 (March episode, southwest monsoon). Experimental forecast was done for next-day hourly O3 during January 2006 over the central part of Thailand (CENTHAI). Available data from 20 ambient monitoring stations in Thailand and 3 stations in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, were used for the episode analysis and for the model performance evaluation. The year 2000 anthropogenic emission inventory prepared by the Center for Global and Regional Environmental Research at the University of Iowa was projected to the simulation year on the basis of the regional average economic growth rate. Hourly emission in urban areas was prepared using ambient carbon monoxide concentration as a surrogate for the emission intensity. Biogenic emissions were estimated based on data from the Global Emissions Inventory Activity. Hindcast simulations (CSEA) were performed with 0.5 degree x 0.5 degree resolution, whereas forecast simulations (CENTHAI) were done with 0.1 degree x 0.1 degree hourly emission input data. MM5-CMAQ model system performance during the selected episodes satisfactorily met U.S. Environmental Protection Agency criteria for O3 for most simulated days. The experiment forecast for next-day hourly O3 in January 2006 yielded promising results. Modeled plumes of ozone in both hindcast and forecast cases agreed with the main wind fields and extended over considerable downwind distances from large urban areas.  相似文献

Summer pollution episodes in Hong Kong are related to the passage of tropical storms close to the territory. Between 1994 and 1999, there were six territory-wide ozone episodes in Hong Kong during which the Hong Kong Air Quality Objective for ozone (240 μg m−3, 1 h) was violated. The maximum O3 concentration for the period was 334 μg m−3 recorded in August 1999. Synoptically, tropical storms were in the vicinity on all the episode days. Northwesterly/westerly winds induced by the storms are believed to cause ozone precursor emissions from local power plants in the western part of Hong Kong to impact the territory, and at the same time allowing the import of emissions from upwind sources along the mainland coast. Other important meteorological factors that contribute to the occurrence of the episode events include: stable atmospheres, morning break-up of nocturnal inversions, low winds, strong solar radiation and high temperatures. Trajectory analysis of airflows at 850 hPa confirms the long-range pollutant transport. The strong correlation between non-sea-salt sulphate (NS-SO4) and selenium for the summer of 1999 indicates that the main source of high levels of NS-SO4 in summer in Hong Kong is coal combustion. The correlation between arsenic (As) and vanadium (V) for the summers of 1996–1999 suggests a concomitant influence of coal and residual oil combustion in the region.  相似文献

O3 concentrations were simulated over the Seoul metropolitan area in Korea using a simple semi-empirical reaction (SEGRS) model which consists of generic reaction set (GRS), photochemical reaction set, and the diagnostic wind field generation model. The aggregated VOC emission strength was empirically scaled by the comparison of the simulated slope of (O3–2NO–NO2) concentration as a function of cumulative actinic light flux against measurements on high surface ozone concentration days with the relatively weak easterly geostrophic winds at the 850 hPa level in summer when the effect of horizontal advection was fairly small. The results indicated that the spatial distribution patterns and temporal variations of spatially averaged ground-level ozone concentrations were quite well simulated compared with those of observations with the modified volatile organic compound (VOC) emission strength. The diurnal trend of the surface ozone concentration and the maximum concentration compared observations were also quite reasonably simulated. However, the maximum ozone concentration occurring time at Seoul lagged about 2 h and the ozone concentration in the suburban area was slightly overestimated in the afternoon due to the influx of high ozone concentration from the urban area. It was found that the SEGRS model could be effectively used to simulate or predict the ground-level ozone concentration reasonably well without heavy computational cost provided the emission of ozone precursors are given.  相似文献

The mesoscale meteorological model TVM, coupled to a photochemical/transport module in which different chemical mechanisms (RACM, EMEP) are implemented, has been evaluated. Field measurements and numerical results are used to determine the impact of the mesoscale flows on the photochemical smog episodes observed in the Greater Madrid Area for two selected days, characterised by the presence of a thermal low-pressure system over the Iberian Peninsula. During the 14 July 1992, the synoptic flow from the southeast favoured the transport of the precursors to the Guadarrama mountain range, where high concentrations of ozone were registered, exceeding the population information threshold. On the 15 July 1995, the synoptic wind from the northwest interacted with the local thermally driven flows, pushing the pollutants far away from the metropolitan area with the result that high ozone concentrations were measured to the east-southeast of the city.  相似文献

Diurnal variations of wind field and pollutant dispersion in a complex terrain with a shoreline were investigated under the insolation conditions of summer and winter. The area is located in the south of the Korean Peninsula and includes a large petrochemical industrial complex. The Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (RAMS) was used in the simulation study. Initially, horizontally homogeneous wind fields were assumed on the basis of sounding data at the nearby upper-air station for days with morning wind speeds below 2 m s−1. On these days, the sea breeze prevailed in summer while the land breeze lasted for a few hours in the morning; the effect of synoptic winds was strong in winter with some inclusion of wind variations owing to the interaction between sea and land. The predicted wind direction at the location of the weather station captured an important change of the sea/land breeze of the observed one. In the morning, both in summer and winter, complicated wind fields with low wind speeds resulted in high pollutant concentrations almost all over the area. On the other hand, in the afternoon, the wind field was rather uniform and the terrain effects were not significant even in the mountainous area with the development of a mixing layer.  相似文献
