Zooplankton ingestion of phytoplankton carbon in the iceedge zone of the Eastern Bering Sea was measured using a deck incubation approach in 1982. Using further samples collected in 1983, the plant cell carbon to cell volume ratio was estimated at 0.0604 pg m–3 from an experimentally determined particulate carbon to seston volume relationship. The application of this conversion to the results of experimental incubations of natural plant stocks with net-caught zooplankton produced ingestion rates of 68.8 and 10.26 mg C g–1 grazer d–1 for copepods and euphausiids, respectively. Extrapolating these rates to in situ zooplankton biomass at the edge of the seasonal ice pack yielded carbon flux rates through the zooplankton community ranging between 6.5 and 32.8 mg C m–2 d–1. This consumption amounted to less than 2% of the daily phytoplankton production in the ice-edge zone.  相似文献

Taking 29 Chinese lakes and 29 Italian lakes as two separate case studies, the paper presented the variations of exergies and structural exergies along eutrophication gradients in Chinese and Italian lakes. The exergies (Ex) and structural exergies (Exst) were calculated based on phytoplankton biomass (BA) and zooplankton biomass (BZ). A trophic state index (TSI) scaling from 0 to 100 was developed to classify trophic status for Chinese and Italian lakes based on three indicators, chlorophyll-a concentration (Chl-a, in mg/m3), total phosphorus (TP in mg/m3) and transparency in Secchi disk depth (SD in m). The relationships between TSI and Ex, Exst, total biomass, BZ/BA ratios were analyzed. The following results were obtained: (1) with the increase of TSI in Chinese and Italian lakes, there is an increasing trend for Ex, and a decreasing trend for Exst, generally. The obvious negative correlations exist between TSI and Exst, at the significant level of 0.01 for Italian lakes, and 0.05 for Chinese lakes. The obvious positive correlations exist between TSI and Ex, at the significant level of 0.01 for Chinese lakes, and for Italian lakes in Spring, Autumn and the all-year. (2) The structural exergy is more dependent on the ratio of phytoplankton biomass to zooplankton biomass (BZ/BA) than the exergy, and the exergy is more dependent on total biomass than the structural exergy. (3) The phytoplankton biomass (BA) and zooplankton biomass (BZ) are increased with the increasing TSI in Chinese and Italian lakes, and phytoplankton biomass (BA) increases more rapidly then zooplankton biomass (BZ) does. This results in the definite decrease of BZ/BA ratio with the increasing trophic status index. Such changes of BA, BZ and BZ/BA ratio could explain successfully the variations of exergies and structural exergies along eutrophication gradients in Chinese and Italian lakes. From the two separate case studies of Chinese lakes and Italian lakes, it could be concluded that exergy and structural exergy are feasible to serve as the system-level ecological indicators to give appropriate information on the trophic status of different lakes.  相似文献

The plankton community in the Polar Front area of the Barents Sea was investigated during a cruise from 14 to 28 July 1987. The colonial algaePhaeocystis pouchetii andDinobryon pellucidum dominated the phytoplankton. Depth integrated carbon assimilation rates varied from 190 to 810 mg C m–2 d–1. A high carbon:chlorophyll ratio (which varied from 123 to 352) prevailed at the three stations investigated, which may relate to facultative heterotrophic behaviour byD. pellucidum. The herbivorous zooplankton community was dominated byCalanus glacialis, C. finmarchicus, andC. hyperboreus. Maximum zooplankton biomass was found in the same depth strata as phytoplankton chlorophyll maximum. The herbivorous copepod populations did not display consistent day-night vertical migration patterns. Phytoplankton consumption rates of the various life stages were estimated from the turnover rate of plant pigments in the gut. The gut defecation rate constant (R) varied from 0.014 to 0.027 min–1 at 0°C in copepodites (Stage II to adult female) ofC. glacialis, independent of developmental stage.Calanus spp. community carbon ingestion rates calculated from particulate carbon:chlorophyll ratios, were 10, 65 and 400% of daily phytoplankton carbon fixation rates at Stations 1, 2 and 3, respectively.  相似文献

Winter and summer zooplankton maxima were observed on both near-reef and offshore sampling sites in the northern part of the Gulf of Aqaba, with summer maxima smaller than those of winter and more characterized by larval forms. Near-reef zooplankton biomass was generally several times greater than that observed 2 km offshore. During 1987, a near-reef maximum of 155 ind. or 12.2 g wet biomass m–3 was observed in March, while 103 ind. or 8.5 g wet biomass m–3 was observed in July. In the same year, 2 km offshore a maximum of 53 ind. or 2.5 g wet biomass m–3 was observed in February, while a maximum of 33 ind. or 0.5 g wet biomass m–3 was noted in July. The following year, 1988, the near-reef zooplankton abundances were little changed, but offshore zooplankton abundances were much higher (317 m–3). During 1987, the dominant winter (March) forms near the reef were gammarid amphipods, at maximum concentrations of 100 ind. m–3, where the summer (July) maximum was composed primarily of mysids (34 m–3), gammarid amphipods (30 m–3), and fish eggs (24 m–3). The offshore winter zooplankton fauna was characterized by copepods and appendicularians, each at a maximum concentrations of ca 13 ind. m–3, while the summer maximum was dominated by brachyuran zoea (31 m–3). Though the 1988, winter near-reef zooplankton community compositions were similar to those of 1987, the offshore zooplankton fauna was dominated by ostracods, which were relatively rare in previous years. Preliminary data suggests that holoplanktonic forms like chaetognaths, copepods and appendicularians, at an offshore site exhibit different patterns of vertical migration than those near the reef. This different behavior may result from different species compositions of these taxa or from high concentrations of pseudoplanktonic bentho-neritic peracarid crustaceans. Please address correspondence and reprint requests to T. Anchovy feeding activity (based on samples collected around the South African coast between 1986 and 1988) seems to peak twice daily, with the major peak between 17:00 and 19:00 hrs. Mean daily consumption in the field was estimated at 3.45% of body wt d-1. Since the various food types available to anchovy differ in their caloric values, this figure might be expected to vary according to the type of diet available to the fish. To obtain a diet energetically equivalent to that measured in the field anchovy feeding exclusively on phytoplankton would need to consume the equivalent of 5.8% of their body wt d-1 and those feeding on zooplankton 3.5 to 4.5% of the body wt, while fish feeding on their own eggs would require only 2.5% of their body wt daily. Feeding on eggs at peak spawning on the spawning grounds —where there is limited alternative food (i.e., zooplankton) available — seems adequate to support reproduction. In selection at the population level, cannibalistic fish benefit from homeostatic self-regulation.  相似文献

Growth and herbivory of heterotrophic dinoflagellates (Gymnodinium sp.) from the Weddell Sea and the Weddell/Scotia Confluence were studied in 1988 in 100-liter microcosms. The microcosms were screened through 200-µm or 20-µm mesh nets and incubated for 12 d at 1 °C under artificial light. Mean cell volume of dinoflagellates was 1 000 to 1 500µm3, and that of their phytoplankton prey 360 to 430µm3. Dinoflagellate growth rate followed a Holling type II functional response, with a maximum growth rate of 0.3 d–1 and half-saturation food concentrations of 1.0µg chlorophylla l–1, 50µg C l–1, or 1 500 cells ml–1. Carbon budgets based on14CO2 assimilation and biomasses of phytoplankton and heterotrophic dinoflagellates suggested a balance between phytoplankton grazing loss and dinoflagellate consumption, assuming a dinoflagellate carbon conversion efficiency of 40%. Applying this to the functional response yielded estimates of maximum ingestion rate (0.8µg Cµg–1 C d–1, or 6 pg C dinoflagellate–1 h–1) and maximum clearance (0.8 to 1.2 × 105 body volumes h–1, or 80 to 120 nl ind.–1 h–1). The microcosm experiments suggested that heterotrophic dinoflagellates may contribute significantly to maintenance of low phytoplankton biomass in the Southern Ocean.  相似文献

Relation of fish larvae and zooplankton biomass in the Gulf of Aden   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
This study is based on zooplankton samples collected in the upper 50 m by the F.R.V. Manihine in the Gulf of Aden during October–November, 1966 and February–March, 1967. Generally, the displacement volume of zooplankton varied between 20 and 67 ml/m2. Some higher values, up to 100 ml/m2, were also observed. The number of larval fish in positive hauls ranged from 2 to 282 larvae/m2. An inverse relationship between the number of larval fish and the accompanying volume of zooplankton was noted. This relationship is discussed. It is hypothesized that larval mortality due to predation in the Gulf of Aden during the northeast monsoon (November, February and March) was very high.  相似文献

Heterocapsa triquetra (Ehrenberg) Stein is a phototrophic marine dinoflagellate with wide coastal distribution. It is known to be capable of mixotrophy and diel vertical migration. The species was particularly abundant in the Gulf of Finland (the Baltic Sea) during the summers of 1996 and 1998, leading to discolouration of water on the south-west coast of Finland. Large-scale (50 m3) coastal mesocosm experiments in the north-west Gulf of Finland (the Baltic Sea) in the summers of 1996 and 1998 with daily mineral nutrient additions provoked a biomass increase of phytoplankton dominated by H. triquetra. From the first days of the experiment temporary cysts of H. triquetra were found in the bottom sediment water of the mesocosms. Maximum temporary cyst production rates reached values up to 20×106 cysts m–2 day–1, accounting for <1% of the depth-integrated motile population size. The environmental features favouring temporary cyst production remain uncertain; zooplankton grazing and nutrient stress are potential factors. Temporary cysts of H. triquetra were observed in a unialgal culture (f/2 medium) isolated in summer 1999 from Eel Pond (Woods Hole, Mass., USA).Communicated by M. Kühl, Helsingør  相似文献

Phytoplankton standing crop (chlorophyll a) and primary productivity were recorded, and zooplankton biomass was estimated in the two large bays of Australia, the Great Australian Bight on the south coast (December, 1965) and the Gulf of Carpentaria on the north coast (December, 1968). In the Gulf of Carpentaria, the phytoplankton standing crop (average, 27.3 mg chlorophyll a m-2) and primary productivity (average, 133.1 mg C m-2 h-1), as well as zooplankton biomass (average, 305.3 mg wet weight m-3) are much higher than in the Great Australian Bight (12.1 mg chlorophyll a m-2, 18.2 mg C m-2 h-1, 7.1 mg wet weight m-3, respectively). The unexpectedly low productivity values in the Great Australian Bight are attributable to environmental conditions of this bay, which obtains neither replenishment of nutrients from the land nor receives upwelling of deep water.  相似文献

Studies on the relative growth and production of the estuary grouper Epinephelus salmoides Maxwell were conducted in floating net-cages at 5 different stocking densities to determine the optimal level for stocking for commercial culture. The fish were stocked at densities of 15, 30, 60, 90 and 120 fish per m3, and reared for a period of 8 months. Results of the present study indicated that fish stocked at a density of 60 fish m-3 grew equally fast and showed a food conversion ratio, mortality rate, and condition factor comparable to those at the lower stocking densities of 15 and 30 fish m-3. At the end of the experiments, net-yield and production at this level of stocking density (60 fish m-3) were not significantly different from those at the higher stocking densities of 90 and 120 fish m-3, but showed increases of 86.7% over those at a stocking density of 30 fish m-3 and 294.2% over those at a stocking density of 15 fish m-3. The stocking density of 60 fish m-3 is therefore taken as the optimal stocking rate for economical production of estuary groupers in floating net-cages. The estuary groupers take 7 to 8 months to grow from 15–16 g to marketable size (>500 g) at a stocking density of 15 fish m-3, 8 to 9 months at a stocking density of 30 to 60 fish m-3 and 11 to 12 months at 90 to 120 fish m-3.  相似文献

Photoadaption in marine phytoplankton: Response of the photosynthetic unit   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Some species of phytoplankton adapt to low light intensities by increasing the size of the photosynthetic unit (PSU), which is the ratio of light-harvesting pigments to P700 (reaction-center chlorophyll of Photosystem I). PSU size was determined for 7 species of marine phytoplankton grown at 2 light intensities: high (300 E m-2 s-1) and low (4 E m-2 s-1); PSU size was also determined for 3 species grown at only high light intensity. PSU size varied among species grown at high light from 380 for Dunaliella euchlora to 915 for Chaetoceros danicus. For most species grown at low light intensity, PSU size increased, while the percentage increase varied among species from 13 to 130%. No change in PSU size was observed for D. euchlora. Photosynthetic efficiency per chlorophyll a (determined from the initial slope of a curve relating photosynthetic rate to light intensity) varied inversely with PSU size. In contrast, photosynthetic efficiency per P700 was enhanced at larger PSU sizes. Therefore, phytoplankton species with intrinsically large PSU sizes probably respond more readily to the rapid fluctuations in light intensity that such organisms experience in the mixed layer.Contribution No. 1180 from the Department of Oceanography, University of Washington, Seattle, Washington, USA  相似文献

Zooplankton biomass in the ice-covered Weddell Sea,Antarctica   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Zooplankton was sampled by a Rectangular Midwater Trawl (RMT 1 + 8) in Weddell Sea surface waters (0 to 300 m) between 66 and 78°S during austral summer (February – March 1983). Sixty-nine taxa including different developmental stages were considered and divided into 16 size classes between <1 and >39.5 mm length. Biomass was determined by taxon and size class for three different meso- and macroplankton communities in the oceanic region, on the northeastern shelf and on the southern shelf of the Weddell Sea. The highest biomass of 11.2 mg DW m–3 (3.4 g DW m–2) was found in the northeastern shelf community (70 to 74°S), where juvenile and adultEuphausia crystallorophias accounted for 3.7 mg DW m–3 (1.1 g DW m–2). Although not quantitatively sampled, early copepodite stages (CI to CIII) ofCalanoides acutus andCalanus propinquus ranked second with 2.7 mg DW m–3 (0.8 g DW m–2). Biomass in the northeastern shelf community was concentrated in the size ranges 1 to 4 mm and 19.5 to 39.5 mm. The oceanic community of the central Weddell Sea was dominated by copepods smaller than 5 mm, which made up half of the total oceanic biomass. The tunicateSalpa thompsoni (7.0 to 8.5 mm) was the dominant single species with 1.6 mg DW m–3 (0.5 g DW m–2). Euphausiids, mainly juvenile and adult krillEuphausia superba, comprised 1.2 mg DW m–3 (0.4 g DW m–2). Total standing stock in the oceanic community was 9.4 mg DWm–3 (2.8 g DW m–2). Lowest biomass values were found in the southern shelf community (south of 75°S) with 4.0 mg DW m–3 (1.2 g DW m–2), concentrated in the 1 to 4 mm and 14.5 to 34.5 mm size classes. Abundant species were the pteropodLimacina helicina (1 to 2 mm; 0.7 mg DW m–3; 0.2 g DW m–2) andE. crystallorophias (24.5 to 39.5 mm; 0.9 mg DW m–3; 0.3 g DW m–2). The data reveal that it is essential to distinguish among subsystems in the Southern Ocean. This leads to a better understanding of the structure and function of those pelagic food webs which represent alternatives to the paradigmatic krill-centered system.  相似文献

The effect is studied of different inorganic phosphorus concentrations on changes in growth rates of 7 diatom species isolated from the plankton of the Black Sea. All species examined increase their cell-division rate with increasing phosphorus concentration in the medium. The phosphorus concentrations have been determined above which division rate is not limited by phosphorus content in the medium. The non-limiting concentration amounts to V/V m =0.9. In the species studied, non-limiting concentrations ranged from 1 to 30 g P/1. The highest values were obtained for relatively large-sized species. The ratio of cell surface to volume tended to be inversely related to the growth-rate-limiting concentration. Minimal values of phosphorus content in cells have been calculated to range from 0.6 to 4.0·10–17 g.at–P/–3. Based on a comparison of phosphate levels in the Black Sea with experimentally-derived rate-limiting concentrations, it is concluded that phosphorus does not limit the reproduction rate of phytoplankton in the more productive regions of the Black Sea or in the lower strata of the euphotic zone.  相似文献

Regular daylight sampling over 13 mo (February 1985–February 1986) in and adjacent to intertidal forested areas, in small creeks and over accreting mudbanks in the mainstream of a small mangrove-lined estuary in tropical northeastern Queensland, Australia, yielded 112 481 fish from 128 species and 43 families. Species of the families Engraulidae, Ambassidae, Leiognathidae, Clupeidae and Atherinidae were numerically dominant in the community. The same species, with the addition ofLates calcarifer (Latidae).Acanthopagrus berda (Sparidae) andLutjanus agentimaculatus (Lutjanidae) dominated total community biomass. During high-tide periods, intertidal forested areas were important habitats for juvenile and adult fish, with grand mean (±1 SE) density and biomass of 3.5±2.4 fish m–3 and 10.9±4.5 g m–3, respectively. There was evidence of lower densities and less fish species using intertidal forests in the dry season (August, October), but high variances in catches masked any significant seasonality in mean fish biomass in this habitat. On ebb tides, most fish species (major families; Ambassidae, Leiognathidae, Atherinidae, Melanotaeniidae) moved to small shallow creeks, where mean (±1 SE) low-tide density and biomass were 31.3±12.4 fish m–2 and 29.0±12.1 g m–2, respectively. Large variances in catch data masked any seasonality in densities and biomasses, but the mean number of species captured per netting in small creeks was lowest in the dry season (July, August). Species of Engraulidae and Clupeidae, which dominated high-tide catches in the forested areas during the wet season, appeared to move into the mainstream of the estuary on ebbing tides and were captured over accreting banks at low tide. Accreting banks supported a mean (±1 SE) density and biomass of 0.4±0.1 fish m–2 and 1.7±0.3 g m–2, respectively, at low tide. There were marked seasonal shifts in fish community composition in the estuary, and catches in succeeding wet seasons were highly dissimilar. Comparison of fish species composition in this and three other mangrove estuaries in the region revealed significant geographic and temporal (seasonal) variation in fish-community structure. Modifications and removal of wetlands proposed for north Queensland may have a devastating effect on the valuable inshore fisheries of this region, because mangrove forests and creeks support high densities of fish, many of which are linked directly, or indirectly (via food chains) to existing commercial fisheries.Contribution No. 493 from the Australian Institute of Marine Science  相似文献

Orthophosphate (P) uptake on a seasonal basis in surface waters and in vertical profiles was directly proportional to the standing stocks of phytoplankton and bacterioplankton in the outer Los Angeles Harbor and in southern California coastal waters during 1978–1979. A phytoplankton-enriched size fraction (PEF) which was retained on a 1 m pore-size filter contained 83% of the total chlorophyll a but only 18% of the total bacteria. A bacterioplankton-enriched size fraction (BEF) which passed the 1 m filter but was retained on a 0.2 m filter contained 82% of the total bacteria but only 17% of the total chlorophyll a. PEF and BEF accounted for 91 and 9% of the microbial carbon, respectively. The differential uptake of 10 radiolabeled substrates more fully characterized PEF and BEF. 33P uptake occurred in both PEF and BEF, accounting for 47 and 53%, respectively, of the total uptake. 33P uptake by both size fractions was inhibited by low concentrations of 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP), N-ethylmaleimide (NEM) and carbonyl cyanide, m-chlorophenylhydrozone (CCCP). Darkness and low levels of 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea (DCMU) selectively inhibited 33P uptake by PEF; valinomycin selectively inhibited 33P uptake by BEF. An experiment measuring 33P uptake velocity versus P concentration produced sigmoidal saturation kinetics at high levels of exogenous P. Kinetic parameter analyses according to the Hill equation gave a V max of 7.12 nmol l–1 h–1 and aK t of 0.41 nmol l–1 for PEF, and a V max of 5.17 nmol l–1 h–1 and aK t of 112 nmol l–1 for BEF. Consideration of relative surface areas of phytoplankton and bacterioplankton, their 33P uptake rates in light and dark, and estimates of the population turnover times emphasizes the potential importance of bacterioplankton in community phosphorus metabolism.  相似文献

A survey was conducted on 15th November, 1970, in mangrove forests and backwater regions of a section of the Vellar-Coleroon estuarine complex; a total of 19 stations were occupied. Detailed investigations on nutrients, pigments, and plankton were carried out. The following ranges in values were recorded: salinity, 10.40 to 30.50; pH, 7.50 to 8.30; temperature, 29.50° to 30.50°C; total phosphorus, 0.72 to 3.34 g at/l; inorganic phosphate, 0.19 to 1.59 g at/l; ammonia, 0.34 to 0.36 g at/l; nitrite, 0.11 to 0.25 g at/l; nitrate, 2.85 to 6.94 g at/l; silicate, 18.49 to 134.92 g at/l. Dissolved oxygen content ranged from a minimum of 3.69 ml to a maximum of 5.44 ml/l. Chlorophyll a ranged from an undetectable amount to 1.01 mg/m3, chlorophyll b from 0.02 to 0.85 mg/m3, chlorophyll c from 0 to 0.41 mg/m3 and carotenoids from 0 to 0.74 MSPU/m3. The plankton displacement volume ranged from a negligible amount to 3.60 cm3/m3; seston varied between 0.29 and 0.91 g/l. Phytoplankton was abundant at 3 stations; at other stations zooplankton was abundant. Coscinodiscus, Asterionella and Ditylum were the dominant forms among the phytoplankton; Oithona, Acrocaanus, Euterpina, Centropages, Corycaeus, Lucifer and Oikocreura were dominant among the zooplankton. Phytoplankton and zooplankton populations, as percentage of the total plankton, varied between 3.70 and 89.00% and between 11 and 96.30%, respectively. Average gross production values in the mangrove and back-water stations were 7.56 and 3.33 g C/m3/day, and the net production values 6.29 and 2.67 g C/m3/day, respectively.  相似文献

The population dynamics, ammonia and inorganic phosphate excretion, and nutrient regeneration of the common jellyfish Aurelia aurita was investigated from 1982 to 1984 in the Kiel Bight, western Baltic Sea. During summer 1982, medusae abundance ranged between 14 and 23 individuals 100 m-3, biomass was estimated at about 5 g C 100 m-3 and the mean final diameter of individuals was 22 cm. Abundance, based on numbers, in 1983 and 1984 was an order of magnitude lower; biomass was less than 2 g C 100 m-3 and jellyfish grew to 30 cm. During the summers of 1983 and 1984, A. aurita biomass constituted roughly 40% of that of the total zooplankton>200 m. In 1982, for which zooplankton data were lacking, it was assumed that medusae biomass was greater than that of all other zooplankton groups. Total ammonia excretion ranged between 6.5 and 36 mol h-1 individual-1, whereas inorganic phosphate release was 1.4 to 5.7 mol h-1 individual-1. Allometric equations were calculated and exponents of 0.93 for NH4–N release and 0.87 for PO4–P excretion were determined. Nitrogen and phosphorus turnover rates were 5.4 and 14.6% d-1, respectively. In 1982, the medusae population released 1 100 mol NH4–N m-2 d-1, about 11% of the nitrogen requirements of the phytoplankton. The inorganic phosphate excretion (150 mol m-2 d-1) sustained 23% of the nutrient demands of the primary producers. In the other two years the nutrient cycling of the medusae was much less important, and satisfied only 3 to 6% of the nutrient demands. It is suggested that in some years A. aurita is the second most important source of regenerated nutrients in Kiel Bight, next to sediment.  相似文献

Seasonal population dynamics of the gammarid Acanthostepheia malmgreni Goës in Conception Bay, Newfoundland, were examined from October 1998 to November 2000. This species exhibited a 2.5-year life span, with the reproductive cycle correlating with seasonal phytoplankton flux. Females were semelparous and died following a 5-month brooding period and the subsequent release of juveniles in April and May. The biennial life cycle of this population should result in the presence of two cohorts in the hyperbenthos at any given time. However, the cohorts alternated in strength from year to year, which affected annual density, biomass and production during the study period. Densities were 64±87 ind. per 100 m3 in 1999 and 491±492 ind. per 100 m3 (mean±SD) in 2000. Secondary production was estimated at 18–44 mg C m–2 in 1999 and 180–311 mg C m–2 in 2000. The annual P/B ratios were 0.89 and 2.27 in 1999 and 2000, respectively. Growth varied both among and within cohorts, with different life-history stages exhibiting variable growth rates ranging from 0 to 12 mg dry mass month–1.Communicated by J.P. Summary. Tissues of most plant species contain < 10 μg Ni g−1 but Ni hyperaccumulators contain more than 1000 μg Ni g−1 . Hyperaccumulated Ni can defend plants from some herbivores but the defensive role of lesser Ni concentrations is little explored. We raised five species of Streptanthus (Brassicaceae) native to ultramafic soils, one of which (S. polygaloides) is a Ni hyperaccumulator whereas the others are simply Ni-tolerant, on Ni-amended and unamended green-house soils to create plants differing in Ni concentrations. On high-Ni soil, leaves of the hyperaccumulator contained 3800 μg Ni g−1 whereas leaves of non-hyperaccumulator species contained 41–64 μg Ni g−1. Plants of all species grown on low-Ni soils had < 14 μg Ni g−1. Slugs (Limax maximus) were fed plant material in no-choice tests over a 50-day period and survival and mass changes were recorded. All slugs fed high-Ni leaves of the hyperaccumulator species died within 21 d. Slugs fed high-Ni leaves of the other species did not differ significantly in survival or mass change from those fed low-Ni leaves. In choice tests, slugs (Lehmannia valentiana) offered both high- and low-Ni S. polygaloides leaves did little damage to high-Ni leaves. We conclude that hyperacumulated Ni can defend S. polygaloides from slug herbivory via both toxicity and deterrence, but these defensive effects do not extend to Streptanthus species containing < 70 μg Ni g−1.
