The isotopic ratios 18O/16O and 13C/12C show an annal periodicity in the strombid snails Strombus gigas and S. costatus from Bermuda. S. gigas appears to have a constant displacement of 0.5 from oxygen isotopic equilibrium, whereas S. costatus fractionates the oxygen istopes in accordance with established fractionation relationships. With this tool, the growth in strombid snails during different stage can readily be determined on one and the same snail. A 24.8 cm long S. gigas showed an age of 7, a 19.3 cm long S. costatus of 5, and a 7.8 cm long S. costatus of 2 years. From the annual range in oxygen isotopes, growth restricted to warmer periods of the year is assumed. The abundances of 18O and 13C tend to be positively correlated in adult S. gigas and S. costatus speciments, but were inversely related in a juvenile S. costatus.  相似文献

In Red Wharf Bay, UK the naticid gastropod, Polinices pulchellus, was more abundant and more highly aggregated during the summer months (June–August 2001) than during the winter (December 2000). Whilst small numbers of juvenile P. pulchellus (4–6 mm shell length) were present throughout the year the population consisted mainly of individuals of 12–14 mm shell length. Juvenile snails grew rapidly in size during the winter and early spring; growth then virtually ceased between May and June, following which there was a further period of rapid growth between August and February. Densities ranged between 57 and 4,073 ha−1 and the largest individual collected during this investigation measured 16.2 mm in shell length. Statoliths from adult P. pulchellus revealed the presence of a settlement ring and two prominent growth rings (rings 1 and 2). A curvilinear relationship exists between statolith diameter and shell length in snails up to 16 mm in length. Settlement rings ranged in diameter from 19.7 to 45.2 μm (mean 29.8 μm; SE=0.41) giving an estimated shell length of the settled juvenile of 1.1 mm. The diameter of ring 1 and ring 2 were significantly correlated indicating that rapid growth during the first year is maintained during year 2. Shell lengths estimated from the diameters of the prominent statolith rings and those obtained from length frequency data analysis (LFDA), were broadly congruent strongly suggesting an annual periodicity to the statolith rings. The largest snails (>15 mm) present within this population were estimated to be between 2 and 3 years old. Von Bertallanfy seasonal growth curves obtained from the LFDA predicted values of L∞, K and t 0 of 14.32 mm, 1.54 and −0.14 years, respectively, suggesting that P. pulchellus rapidly attains its maximum asymptotic size.  相似文献

Sperm competition models on the evolution of sperm size assume associations with another sperm quality trait, sperm longevity. Sperm length can also provide an indication of possible mechanisms affecting motility and thus fertilization success. Despite their importance, however, detailed mechanisms of sperm competition at the gamete level are poorly understood. In simultaneously hermaphroditic land snails, sperm traits and cryptic female choice are assumed to be crucial in determining fertilization success. We examined the variation in sperm length and number among individuals from four natural populations of the land snail Arianta arbustorum, a species with multiple mating and long-term sperm storage. We also assessed variation in velocity, motility and longevity of sperm in snails from two of the four populations. Independent of shell size, sperm length differed among populations and, to a minor extent, even among individuals within populations. Mean sperm length of a snail was not correlated with the number of sperm delivered in a spermatophore. The mean sperm velocity (=VCL) did not differ between snails from two populations. However, VCL varied among snails. Percentage motility and longevity of sperm differed between snails from the two populations. No correlations were found between length, velocity, percentage motility and longevity of sperm. To conclude, individual snails differed in sperm quality, and this variation may partly explain the differential fertilization success between A. arbustorum snails. Moreover, our findings did not support the positive association between sperm length and longevity assumed by sperm competition models for internally fertilizing species.  相似文献

Acquisition of particle processing capability in postlarval oysters depends upon the structural development of the pallial organs, as well as the development of cilia and mucocytes used (either directly or indirectly) in particle capture and transport. Mucocyte mapping was therefore used to identify mucocyte types and distributions throughout gill development in juvenile oyster Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg 1793) specimens from 2.9 mm to 2.4 cm in shell length. Three categories of gill filaments were identified: apical, lateral and principal filaments, corresponding to filament location or future location in gill plicae. Mucocyte densities were recorded per linear μm (l μm) of frontal surface, and converted to potential total volumes, using the mean volumes of each of the two major mucocyte types: acid mucopolysaccharide (AMPS)-mucocytes and mixed mucopolysaccharide (MMPS)-mucocytes. While AMPS secretions were dominant up to 1.0 cm (flat homorhabdic gill, to semi-heterorhabdic differentiation and plication), MMPS secretions increased progressively, dominating in 2.4 cm and adult specimens (fully heterorhabdic and plicated). Mucus composition, and hence mucus viscosity, thus appears to evolve in relation to the degree of enclosure of the gill frontal surfaces. Total (AMPS + MMPS) potential mucus secretion increased allometrically with juvenile growth, characterized by a sharp increase between 10 and 24 mm shell length, suggesting a marked improvement in particle processing capability. Mucocyte distributions on the gill were heterogeneous from the onset of heterorhabdic differentiation (7.5 mm): the apical filaments of the plicae contained much greater mucocyte total volumes, compared to the lateral and principal filaments. In addition to mucus composition, total potential mucus volume thus also evolved in relation to the degree of enclosure of the gill frontal surfaces. These results show that functional specialization in mucocyte distribution precedes the complete anatomical heterorhabdic differentiation. The completely functional adult gill system is thus attained in 2.4 cm juveniles. This information should be of use in understanding the dynamics of juvenile feeding, growth, and mortality, both in natural systems and in rearing operations.  相似文献

Two mark-recapture studies, regular population censuses, field observations, and laboratory culture were used to study the life history of the tropical marine gastropod Cypraea annulus Linnaeus, 1758 from Cape Maeda, Okinawa Island, from April 1984 to March 1986. In the field, the average rate of increase in shell length of marked juvenile snails was 1.0±0.3 mm wk-1 (N=13), with a maximum of 1.5 mm wk-1 (initial shell length 10.6 to 17.2 mm). In the laboratory, the maximum growth rate of juveniles was 3.0 mm wk-1 with food ad libitum. Snails with primordial teeth on the shells grew at a rate of 0.1 to 0.5 mm wk-1 for about 2 wk. The adults continued to grow at a similar rate for an additional 3 to 6 wk, and ceased detectable growth when some females started spawning egg masses. In the littoral zone on Okinawa Island, snails reproduced throughout the year. Egg masses brooded by three females (shell length 17.4 to 21.3 mm) in the field contained 90 000 to 133 000 ova. In the laboratory, brooding periods of three females lasted 6,8, and 9 d. The estimated average frequency of spawning was 5 egg masses female-1 yr-1. The mean shell length of adult females (20.3 mm) was significantly larger than that of adult males (19.6 mm). The life-history strategy of C. annulus is characterized by rapid growth, high fecundity, and repeated spawning throughout the year.  相似文献

The effects of two antifouling paints, one containing organotin compounds, the other copper oxide, were studied from September 1983 to October 1984 on Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg) grown under natural field conditions in the Bay of Arcachon, France. The organotin paint reduced growth rate expressed as weight, length and width, but did not affect shell height; it drastically decreased the dry condition factor and shell density, but did not affect the viability of embryos and larvae from exposed oysters. However, some decrease in larval growth rate was observed. The copper paint had no effect on oyster growth, but lowered the condition factor compared to controls. Neither viability of embryos or larvae nor larval growth were affected by this paint.  相似文献

Length/weight relationships have been computed for shell, flesh and byssus ofAulacomya ater (Molina) and energy values used to convert the weights to energy equivalents. Shell accounts for some 26% of total body energy, while the contribution of the byssus declines from 15 to 8% during growth. Observations of juvenile growth rates have been used to generate a Gompertz growth equation which predicts attainment of maximum length (90 mm) after 11 years. Reproductive condition has been assessed by monitoring seasonal fluctuations in the flesh weight of standard-sized individuals, calculated from monthly length/weight regressions. There appear to be three spawnings, of variable date and intensity, each year. From the above data, annual energy expenditure on growth and gonad output has been calculated for individuals of various sizes. The ratio of total production to biomass is a declining clining function of shell length, dropping from 29.5 at 5 mm to 0.8 at 85 mm. The proportion of total production expended on gamete output increases steadily from 25% at attainment of maturity (15 mm) to 81% at 85 mm length. The considerable effects of changing size composition on the amount and type of production in natural populations are discussed.  相似文献

Coralliophila abbreviata (Lamarck) is a corallivorous gastropod that lives and feeds on several species of scleractinian coral in the Western Atlantic and Caribbean. Previous studies of C. abbreviata have revealed that snails on branching acroporid corals are larger and consume more tissue than those on massive and plating corals. To ascertain whether snail life-history and fitness are differentially affected by the coral host, an analysis of the age structure and female reproductive output of snail populations on three coral host taxa (Acropora palmata, Diploria spp., and Montastraea spp.) was conducted at four shallow (2–7 m depth) reef sites off Key Largo, Florida in June through August, 2004. Snails were, on average, almost twice as large on A. palmata than on Diploria spp. and Montastraea spp., averaging 30.3 mm shell length, compared to 17.2 and 17.6 mm, respectively. Brood size increased as a power function with female shell length. Females on A. palmata were significantly larger than females on the other two hosts and, therefore, produced more offspring per female. The number of growth striae on the inner surface of the operculum was used to estimate snail age. Estimates of growth rate were obtained by fitting the Gompertz growth function to size-at-age plots and mortality was estimated using growth parameters and size-frequency data. The data suggest that C. abbreviata inhabiting A. palmata are larger than on alternative hosts due to a combination of a faster growth rate and longer life-span. The species is believed to be a protandrous hermaphrodite. The timing of sex change varied among hosts; snails on A. palmata changed sex later at larger sizes relative to those on the other two hosts. Based on these results, it seems probable that C. abbreviata has developed reaction norms for life-history traits, allowing snails to adjust and maximize fitness in the different environments associated with various coral hosts.  相似文献

The growth and moulting of Palaemon elegans Rathke has been compared under a circadian (12 h light: 12 h dark) and two non-circadian (8 h light:8 h dark and random light:dark) light/dark cycles. In prawns reared individually from hatching to the late juvenile phase, growth, measured as increase in total length, was significantly retarded in the non-circadian regimes, during zoeal, post-larval and early juvenile development. This effect was primarily the result of reduced increments at moulting in the non-circadian regimes. Growth of prawns reared from hatching to the post-larval phase, measured as wet and dry weights, was similarly reduced in a non-circadian regime. These effects support the hypothesis that the integrity of an animal's physiology is partially dependent on maintaining, through the action of daily environmental cycles, correct timing relationships between its oscillating sub-systems.  相似文献

The distribution of Littorina irrorata Say on a low-energy barrier beach on the northern Gulf of Mexico is described, and correlated with the presence of Spartina alterniflora and other plants in the upper intertidal zone. The movements of 66 individually tagged snails were followed in the S. alterniflora zone for an average of 226 days, during which time an average of 10.6 positions were recorded per snail. The snails travelled an average total path distance of at least 995 cm, but due to contorted paths, ended up an average resultant distance of only 399 cm away from their original positions. They moved an estimated resultant distance of approximately 20 to 25 cm per activity period. Despite a slight offshore movement during the fall and winter, the snails moved more parallel to the shoreline than perpendicular to it.  相似文献

The edible volutid snail Adelomelon ancilla occurs on the Argentine coast and may have the capacity to serve as source of support for local fisheries. However, knowledge of its reproduction is lacking. Over 3 years (from September 2000 to July 2004) we studied the oviposition at Golfo Nuevo, Patagonia by diving. Monthly collections were performed to examine gonadal stages histologically during 2002–2003. Gamete development stages corresponded with the expected period for oviposition occurring from July to November, a time of increasing day length. Oviposition also took place in March when water temperature attained a maximum of 18°C. Following the spawning period, remaining gametes were resorpted in both sexes. Males contained sperm throughout the year, parasperm and eusperm forms were found within the same acinus. Oogonia/oocytes ranged from 20 to 240 μm in diameter during oogenesis. Females commenced laying egg capsules from a shell length of 114 mm. Reproduction is compared with other fishable volutid snails from the Argentine shelf, and suggests the need to apply certain fishing restrictions if the resource begins to be utilized commercially. The imposex condition was found in snails from some shipping areas. The frequency of this condition declined with distance from the port.  相似文献

An understanding of spawning and larval development can be fundamental to interpreting the abundance, distribution, and population structure of marine invertebrate taxa. Tegula funebralis (A. Adams, 1855), the black turban snail, has been the focus of numerous ecological studies on the Pacific coast of North America. To date, there are only conflicting and anecdotal reports of spawning, and there is no information on larval or juvenile development for this conspicuous and abundant species. On 19 September 1995, two individuals of T. funebralis were observed free-spawning gametes into seawater in tanks at the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology. Embryos and larvae were subsequently reared to metamorphosis and beyond. Development was pelagic and similar to development described for other trochids, and larvae were observed not to feed at any stage. Larvae began to metamorphose at 5.7 to 6.7 d and settled at 260 μm shell length. Juveniles grew ≃ 10 μm in shell length per day and appeared to feed on detritus. Juveniles lacked some adult diagnostic shell characters, including two columellar nodes and a closed umbilicus. In the field, small (<3 mm) juveniles occurred in the adult habitat on all sampling dates between October and March. Small juveniles were found only under rocks and were most abundant under rocks partially buried in coarse sand, suggesting that juveniles may utilize a specific microhabitat within the adult T. funebralis habitat. This study demonstrates that the timing of larval starvation did not only determine the larval quality (shell length, lipid content, and RNA:DNA ratio) and the juvenile performance (growth and filtration rates), but also determine how the latent effects of larval starvation were mediated in Crepidula onyx. The juveniles developed from larvae that had experienced starvation in the first two days of larval life had reduced growth and lower filtration rates than those developed from larvae that had not been starved. Lower filtration rates explained the observed latent effects of early larval starvation on reduced juvenile growth. Starvation late in larval life caused a reduction in shell length, lipid content, and RNA:DNA ratio of larvae at metamorphosis; juveniles developed from these larvae performed poorly in terms of growth in shell length and total organic carbon content because of “depletion of energy reserves” at metamorphosis. Results of this study indicate that even exposure to the same kind of larval stress (starvation) for the same period of time (2 days) can cause different juvenile responses through different mechanisms if larvae are exposed to the stress at different stages of the larval life.  相似文献

Nucella (=Thais) lapillus (L.) develops to the juvenile stage within an egg capsule. This study was undertaken to investigate nutritive and bacteriostatic properties of the intracapsular fluid for this species. Capsules were collected intertidally at Nahant, Massachusetts, USA, in the summers of 1982 and 1983. The average capsule contained only 1.1 l of intracapsular fluid per embryo. A statistically significant correlation was observed between capsule height and number of developing embryos contained therein, although the number of embryos per capsule was more closely related to capsule volume. Total dry weight of encapsulated, shelled embryos increased exponentially as a function of shell length. However, weight increases may be entirely due to shell calcification; the average dry tissue weight of shelled embryos was significantly below that for pre-shelled individuals, suggesting a net loss of biomass during development. Aliquots of intracapsular fluid failed to inhibit the growth of the 13 bacterial strains tested. Despite the above results, pre-shelled embryos generally survived only several days following their premature removal from egg capsules at 12°C. Shelled veligers were reared outside of the capsules with no apparent ill effects. An explanation for these survivorship results is elusive.  相似文献

Although prey-detecting and searching abilities of predatory leeches of rhynchobdellid or the Erpobdelliformes of arhynchobdellid species have been studied in the past, hirudiniformes leeches are rarely mentioned. In this study, we investigated the chemosensory ability for prey-detecting and searching in Whitmania laevis, a hirudiniformes species that mainly preys on freshwater snails, and examined if such ability aided in their prey selection. Five sympatric snail species, i.e., apple snail Pomacea canaliculata, thiarid snail Thiara tuberculata, viviparid snail Sinotaia quadrata, ear pond snail Radix auricularia swinhoei and tadpole snail Physa acuta were used as prey. Our results showed that W. laevis has the chemosensory ability to detect the waterborne odors of snails. However, they follow the snails by their mucus trails, and not by the odor that the snails leave in the water. Of these five snail species, W. laevis only followed the trails of the thiarid snails, ear pond snails and tadpole snails, and did not show a different response to the trails produced by snails of different sizes. Our results suggest that W. laevis can use waterborne odors to detect the existence of prey. They rely on mucus trails to follow their preferred prey, but do not distinguish between snails of a preferred size by their mucus trails. In addition, when following the trail of a preferred snail, W. laevis exhibits a newly described searching behavior, i.e., head tapping, and may use it to locate a snail trail and increase its probability of finding the trail-laying snail nearby.  相似文献

The trochid snail Monodonta articulata Lamarck was exposed to mercuric sulphate at concentrations of 0.2, 0.5, 0.8 and 1 ppm Hg++. At 24 h, retraction into the shell was observed in 0.8 and 1 ppm Hg++; this retraction increased in these concentrations at 36 h. Retracted snails died if retained in the solutions, but generally recovered within 24 to 48 h if transferred to uncontaminated sea water. Immersionemersion behaviour and interface activity were studied over 24 h by means of an aktograph; snails in normal sea water spent more time below than above the water surface, and exhibited frequent periods of activity. Exposure to mercuric sulphate at concentration of 0.25, 0.5, 0.8 and 1 ppm Hg++ progressively reduced both the length and frequency of activity periods. From 0.5 ppm Hg++ upwards, emersion periods increased, and immersion periods decreased. Oxygen consumption of snails was measured in sea water and in mercuric sulphate at concentrations of 0.2, 0.5, 0.8 and 1 ppm Hg++. Oxygen consumption decreased significantly with each progressive rise in mercury concentration. It is considered that mercury affects M. articulata by interfering with respiration, initially reducing interface activity, then forcing the snail for longer and longer periods out of the water. Retraction occurs when activity is no longer possible. It is concluded that respiratory and behavioural alterations of this nature would afford a good indicator of the presence of sub-lethal concentrations of pollutants.  相似文献

Predators such as crabs, whelks, and sea stars attack their bivalve prey in different ways, and predator-induced defenses are an important means of protection. The degree to which induced defenses are specific to different predators, however, remains largely unknown. In laboratory experiments (June to August 1998), we raised mussels (Mytilus edulis L.) in the presence of a drilling predator [the whelk Nucella lapillus (L.)] or a crushing predator [the crab Carcinus maenas (L.)] to determine whether induced changes in prey shell thickness, size, or shape occurred and whether changes were predator-specific. Over a 2 month period, juvenile mussels were exposed to waterborne cues from actively feeding crabs or whelks. Mussels produced thicker shell lips in response to both predators relative to control mussels raised in their absence, and the difference was significantly greater in response to whelks than to crabs. Mussels exposed to whelks showed significantly smaller increases in shell length and width and total wet weight than did mussels exposed to crabs. Thus, there may be a trade-off between shell thickness and linear shell growth and a potential delay in attaining a size refuge from predation. The effects of swimming frequency and water temperature on shell growth, tissue mass, and stored energy reserves of juvenile sea scallops, Placopecten magellanicus Gmelin, were examined in a factorial laboratory experiment spanning six weeks in July and August 1992. Individually tagged scallops of similar initial size (22.5±0.1 mm shell height, n=240) were induced to swim to exhaustion at three different swimming frequencies (every day, twice a week, or not at all) in two different water temperature regimes (4 to 7 or 7 to 13°C). The scallops were fed an ad libitum mixture of cultured microalgae. At the end of the experiment, cumulative increase in shell height, dry weight of soft tissues, condition index of dry adductor muscle (adductor muscle dry weight/soft tissue dry weight x 100) and total carbohydrate content of dry adductor muscle were measured for each scallop. Scallops at the higher temperature had significantly greater shell heights, and were in better metabolic condition as evidenced by significantly higher condition indices and muscle carbohydrate contents. The dry soft tissue weights did not differ significantly from their low temperature counterparts. Swimming frequency had no significant effect on shell height, dry tissue weight, or carbohydrate content, but condition index of the adductor muscle increased significantly with swimming frequency. These results show that not only was there no cumulative cost of swimming in terms of shell growth, total soft tissue weight, or carbohydrate content in young scallops, but that condition of adductor muscle tissue was higher in scallops that swam.  相似文献

The gastropod Polinices sordidus was collected from an uncontaminated area in Quibray Bay, New South Wales, Australia, in 1990. The snails were exposed for 2 wk to polluted sediments collected from Port Kembla Harbour, Blackwattle Bay, Lake Illawarra, Lake Macquarie in New South Wales, Australia, and the Derwent River in Tasmania, Australia. Metal accumulation and regulation by this species were evaluated. Metal concentrations in snail tissues and total, EDTA and HCl-extractable metals in the sediments were compared. Copper concentrations were extremely varied in snails exposed to the same sediment. This was not the case for other matals tested. No accumulation of copper was found in snails exposed to different sediments. There was no zinc accumulation from sediments containing less then 10 mg Zn/g. P. sordidus could accumulate lead, manganese and iron from some of the sediments. Manganese concentrations in the snail tissues correlated with total, HCl-extractable and, more significantly, EDTA-extractable Mn in the sediments. P. sordidus was not considered to be a good bioindicator of copper and zinc contaimination in sediments; however, this species could be used as an indicator of lead and manganese contamination.  相似文献

Electrophoretic identification and genetic analysis of bivalve larvae   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Taxonomic identification and genetic analysis of larval marine invertebrates have been vexing problems. We describe a polyacrylamide mini-gel electrophoresis technique for resolving proteins from individual larval bivalves (shell length 250 to 350 m) and apply this technique to three species of laboratory-cultured larval oysters [Ostrea edulis L., 1758, Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg, 1793) and c. virginica (Gmelin, 1791)] reared during summer 1989. Electrophoretic patterns of proteins clearly discriminate among the three species and allow genetic analysis of a polymorphic allozyme locus (Pgi) in field-collected larvae and juveniles of C. virginica. This technique provides an economical tool for largescale taxonomic, ecologic, and genetic studies of meroplanktonic stages of various species.  相似文献
