The magnitude of the environmental and social consequences of soil erosion and land degradation in semiarid areas of the Mediterranean
region has long been recognized and studied. This paper investigates the interrelationship between land use/cover (LULC) changes
and land degradation using remotely sensed and ancillary data for southeastern Spain. The area of study, the Xaló River catchment
situated in the north of the Alicante Province, has been subjected to a number of LULC changes during the second half of the
20th century such as agricultural abandonment, forest fires, and tourist development. Aerial photographs dating back to 1956
were used for the delineation of historic LULC types; Landsat ETM+ data were used for the analysis and mapping of current
conditions. Two important indicators of land degradation, namely, susceptibility to surface runoff and soil erosion, were
estimated for the two dates using easily parametrizable models. The comparison of 1956 to 2000 conditions shows an overall
“recuperating” trend over the catchment and increased susceptibility to soil erosion only in 3% of the catchment area. The
results also identify potential degradation hot-spots where mitigation measures should be taken to prevent further degradation.
The readily implemented methodology, based on modest data requirements demonstrated by this study, is a useful tool for catchment
to regional scale land use change and land degradation studies and strategic planning for environmental management. 相似文献

This paper examines the effects of growing land pressure on the distribution and quality of cropland allocations on customary tenured land (CTL) in Swaziland. Within the wider Sub‐Saharan context, the reform of indigenous tenure systems is now generally seen as a process of adaptation rather than replacement. The legal recognition of (existing and future) user rights is considered a practical way forward. This essentially rights‐based approach may divert attention from technical inadequacies indigenous systems may have, particularly under conditions of increasing land pressure. The case of CTL substantiates such shortcomings. CTL has seen a marked growth in population and land allocations since Independence. This had led to concerns on the land distribution efficiency in view of the improved agricultural production required to sustain the increasing number of rural households. By analysing historical changes in the number, size and quality of cropland allocations in selected rural communities, this paper demonstrates the occurrence of a high degree of inconsistency in cropland distribution at the community level, as well as inefficient land distribution at higher levels of scale. These shortcomings threaten the sustainability of the local agricultural production systems, and will need to be addressed in any meaningful reform process. 相似文献

Spatial and temporal variations in vegetation are examined in relation to land tenure, population increase, and rainfall variation in a part of Peddie district, Eastern Cape. Sequential aerial photographs between 1938 and 1988 are analyzed to determine trends in vegetation and population change in three different land-tenure units. The areal extent at each date of four distinct vegetation categories is determined using PC ARC/INFO GIS. Long-term annual rainfall trends for the area are analyzed and juxtaposed with vegetation changes. Extensive ground-truthing exercises are carried out to verify the present condition of vegetation condition in terms of cover and species composition. Differences in land-tenure systems are discerned as the dominant factor controlling variations in vegetation degradation. The study also reveals that neither population changes nor rainfall variations can explain the observed trends in vegetation degradation. Earlier injudicious land-use practices, sustained since the turn of the last century, may provide plausible explanations for the trends and present status of vegetation degradation in the area. 相似文献

The relationship between migration and deforestation in the developing world continues to receive significant attention. However beyond direct population increase, the precise mechanisms that operate within the intersection of migrant/host land rights remain largely unexamined. Where migrants are provided with land and rights by the State and/or local communities, how such rights are perceived by the migrants is of primary importance in their interaction with land resources, and in aggregate it impacts the development opportunities and environmental repercussions of migration. The authors analyze the operative aspects of land rights reception (as opposed to provision) by migrant populations, and the relationship between this reception and deforestation. The article examines a case in Zambia to analyze how tenurial constructs, emerging from the way rights are perceived by migrants, lead to the continued clearing of areas much larger than needed for cultivation, even when the arrangement appears counter‐productive in terms of land rights provision and labour allocation. While valuable policy efforts have focused on providing resource rights to migrants, how such rights are received and the relationship of this reception to resource management needs greater policy attention. 相似文献

The term "barren hills" has been a keyword for land degradation in the uplands of Vietnam for over a decade. Nevertheless, the "barren" land is still not adequately ecologically characterized. In this work, we analyze land use-induced changes in vegetation and soil properties along a sequence of barren hills types formed on one physiotope. The study is undertaken in the Bac Kan province, one of the poorest upland regions where livestock plays an important role. A transition from an old-growth laurel forest to a sparse manmade grassland is characterized by a total of 177 species, rapid species turnover, and discrete dominants, and an overwhelming effect of disturbance history on both soil and vegetation patterning. Land degradation is most apparent in land use-induced maintenance of arrested successions, and the regeneration course is shifted towards drier formations. We hypothesize a conceptual model as an aid to understanding the process of early fallow differentiation in response to the patterned, fine-scale disturbances. The larger-scale implications of the observed trends in regeneration potentials deviation, and, in particular, the effect of water buffaloes in halting fallow successions, are discussed. 相似文献

/ Understanding the problems of land degradation and seeking long-lasting solutions to these problems should be one of the central concerns of countries such as Ethiopia where agriculture is the mainstay of no less than 85% of the population. To this end, the collaboration of policy makers, researchers, donor agencies, and the local people is indispensable. In this paper an attempt is made to discuss the causes of land degradation and the reasons for the failure in the endeavors made to solve the problems. Possible solutions, which may help to ameliorate the situation, are also suggested. The study deals with South Wello (a region in northern Ethiopia), but the assessment is, by and large, a reflection of most of the highlands in the country. A study was conducted in southern Ethiopia to evaluate the nutrient status on smallholder farms with respect to land use class
(garden, grassland, and outfield) and slope position (upper, middle, and lower). Soil physical and chemical properties were
quantified using soil samples collected at two depths (0–15 and 15–30 cm). Available phosphorous was significantly different
among the three land use classes. However, organic carbon and total nitrogen were lower in the outfield compared to the garden
and grass land but not significantly different. The lower than expected nutrient status of the garden and grassland, which
receive almost all available organic supplements, was attributed to the overall low availability of these inputs. Similarly,
pH and cation exchange capacity were not significantly different among the different land use classes. However, the sum of
the exchangeable cations was significantly higher in the garden compared to the outfields. Comparison at landscape level revealed
that the sand fraction was significantly greater, whereas the silt fractions were significantly smaller, on the lower slopes
relative to the middle slopes. Moreover, the organic carbon, total nitrogen, cation exchange capacity, Ca, and Mg values were
significantly less on lower slopes than upper and middle slopes. Perhaps this is because of leaching and the effect of deposition
of coarser sediments from the prevailing gully system. Overall, the fertility of the soil was adequate for supporting smallholder
farming, but consideration must be given to reducing pressure on the land resources, addressing erosion problems, and providing
a line of credit for purchasing inputs. 相似文献

A Conceptual Model for Defining and Assessing Land Management Units Using a Fuzzy Modeling Approach in GIS Environment 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Appropriate land management decisions are important for current and future use of the land to ensure its sustainability. This
requires that land management units (LMUs) be specified to enable the identification of specific parameters employed in decision
making processes. This paper presents the development of a conceptual model, within geographic information systems (GIS),
for defining and assessing LMUs from available biophysical information. The model consists of two main components (sub-models):
land quality-based suitability analysis and soil erosion estimation. Using a fuzzy set methodology, the first sub-model was
constructed to derive a land suitability index (LSI) for a cropping land utilization type. The LSI thus highlights the suitability
grades of every pixel in the study area on a continuous basis. A sub-model of soil erosion was established based on the Revised
Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) utilising the same spatial data bases employed for structuring the LSI. Using a soil
loss tolerance principle, a fuzzy membership function of average annual soil loss (called soil loss index, SLI) was established,
leading to compatibility between LSI and SLI for data integration. LMUs were then derived from various combinations of LSI
and SLI. The methodology developed shows the significance of the model for refining available land suitability evaluation
systems, which take no account of expected land degradation (from erosion) due to a nominated land use. It also provides a
valuable guideline for cost-effective GIS applications in the identification and assessment of homogeneous land units, using
available spatial information sets, at a finer scale. 相似文献

The government of Zimbabwe launched the Fast Track Land Reform Programme (FTLRP) in 2000 as part of its ongoing land reform and resettlement programme which aims to address a racially skewed land distribution. Its goal has been to accelerate both land acquisition and redistribution, targeting at least five million hectares of land for resettlement. This paper investigates the impact of the FTLRP on its beneficiaries' perceptions of land tenure security, and how these subsequently impacted soil conservation investments. Evidence suggests that the programme created some tenure insecurity, which adversely affected soil conservation investments among its beneficiaries. We find support for the contention that households make land‐related investments to enhance security of tenure. The results underscore the need for the government of Zimbabwe to clarify and formalize land tenure arrangements within the programme. 相似文献

Improved techniques for measuring and monitoring the state of biodiversity are required for reporting on national obligations
to international and regional conservation institutions. Measuring the extent of grazing-related degradation in semi-arid
ecosystems has proved difficult. Here we present an accurate and cost-effective method for doing this, and apply it in a South
African semi-arid region that forms part of a globally significant biodiversity hotspot. We grouped structurally and functionally
similar vegetation units, which were expert-mapped at the 1:50,000 scale, into four habitat types, and developed habitat-specific
degradation models. We quantified degradation into three categories, using differences between dry and wet season values of
the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) for the three succulent karoo habitats, and the difference between maximum
and mean NDVI values for the subtropical thicket habitat. Field evaluation revealed an accuracy of 86%. Overall, degradation
was high: 24% of the study area was modeled as severely degraded, and only 9% as intact. Levels of degradation were highest
for bottomland habitats that were most exposed to grazing impacts. In sharp contrast to our methods, a widely used, broad-scale
and snapshot assessment of land cover in South Africa was only 33% accurate, and it considerably underestimated the extent
of severely degraded habitat in the study area. While our approach requires a multidisciplinary team, and in particular expert
knowledge on the characteristics and spatial delimitation of vegetation types, it is repeatable, rapid, and relatively inexpensive.
Consequently, it holds great promise for monitoring and evaluation programs in semi-arid ecosystems, in Africa, and beyond. 相似文献

k -means nonhierarchical cluster analysis using farm size, slope, and distance to the nearest city center and highway as surrogates
of farmland conversion. Discriminant analysis showed that the two groups derived from the cluster analysis were 98.8% accurate
(P < 0.0000). Results from the statistical analysis may serve as a starting point for the identification of individual farms
prone to residential development. To explain the driving forces of farmland conversion to residential uses, interviews should
be conducted with farmers, landowners, and land buyers. The use of multivariate statistical techniques to identify farms in
jeopardy of residential development, in conjunction with qualitative assessments that explain the probability of development
of individual farms, may prove a useful strategy to understand and predict farmland conversion. 相似文献

Landscape characteristics and parcel ownership information are often collected on different spatial scales leading to difficulties in implementing land use plans at the parcel level. This study provides a method for aggregating highly resolute landscape planning information to the parcel level. Our parcel prioritization model directly incorporates a Land Trust's conservation goals in the form of a compromise programming model. We then demonstrate the use of our approach for implementation decisions, including parcel selection under a budget constraint and the estimation of a total conservation budget necessary to meet specific conservation goals. We found that these cost constraints significantly alter the composition of the 'best' parcels for conservation and can also provide guidance for implementation. The model's results were integral to a local Land Trust's ability to further define and achieve their goals. 相似文献

Soil erosion is accelerating in developing countries of Asia, Africa, and Latin America. It has threatened the livelihood
of millions of peasants, for agriculture is their economic mainstay. A probe into the forces causing erosion reveals that
the elite’s resolve to accumulate ever more wealth and to maintain, consolidate, or expand their sociopolitical power and
the necessity of the poor to fulfill their requirements of food, fuelwood, and fodder are the two major factors accelerating
soil erosion. Unless the vast masses of poor people are integrated into the national mainstream through the implementation
of equitable and redistributive development policies, it is impossible to control the accelerating rate of soil erosion and
thus to achieve the objective of sustainable development.
In this article, the phenomenon “soil erosion” is studied with the sol e focus on causation through anthropogenic factors. 相似文献

Land-use suitability analysis in the United States: historical development and promising technological achievements 总被引:18,自引:1,他引:18
Various methods of spatial analysis are commonly used in land-use plans and site selection studies. A historical overview
and discussion of contemporary developments of land-use suitability analysis are presented. The paper begins with an exploration
into the early 20th century with the infancy of documented applications of the technique. The article then travels through
the 20th century, documenting significant milestones. Concluding with present explorations of advanced technologies such as
neural computing and evolutionary programming, this work is meant to serve as a foundation for literature review and a premise
for the exploration of new advancements as we enter into the 21st century. 相似文献

The distribution and compositional pattern of the grass layer, as well as soil quality of southern Ethiopian semi-arid rangelands were examined under three land-use systems (communal land, government ranch and a traditional grazing reserve enclosure) and along a distance gradient (near, middle and far) from water sources. In total, 49 grass species were identified, 65% of which were perennials. Of the most commonly distributed highly desirable species, Chrysopogon aucheri showed the greatest frequency under the traditional grazing reserve (27.6%), and the lowest in the communal land (14.0%). The frequency of Cenchrus ciliaris was similar in all the study sites. The proportion of Lepthotrium senegalensis was low under the land-use systems (3.9%) and increased away from water sources (2.3%). Of the less desirable species, Sporobulus nervosus was extremely more abundant (<0.05) in the communal land (13.3%) than the traditional grazing reserve (3.3%) and the government ranch (1.9%). Sporobolus pyramidalis was dominant in the study sites, with similar (P>0.05) frequency percentages under the land-use systems and along the distance gradients from water. Basal cover was low and similar on all the study sites (3.3%). Concerning the soil texture, sand (71.1%) constituted the largest proportion, followed by silt (21.3%) and lastly, clay (7.7%). With regard to soil exchangeable cations, organic C and total nitrogen were generally low and did not show marked variation in all the study sites. The study showed significant differences for most of the vegetation variables between the communal land and the other land-uses. This suggested that grazing intensity was higher in the communal land and moderate in the government ranch and in the traditional grazing reserves (kallos). The lack of significant differences in most of the studied (vegetation) variables along the distance gradient from water could be ascribed to the fact that grazing disturbance has already exceeded a certain threshold of degradation. Under the present low states of soil nutrients and rainfall, cultivation is neither sustainable nor environmentally friendly and this will lead to further degradation of the soil in these marginal lands. 相似文献

Land Management in the American Southwest: A State-and-Transition Approach to Ecosystem Complexity 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Bestelmeyer BT Herrick JE Brown JR Trujillo DA Havstad KM 《Environmental management》2004,34(1):38-51
State-and-transition models are increasingly being used to guide rangeland management. These models provide a relatively simple, management-oriented way to classify land condition (state) and to describe the factors that might cause a shift to another state (a transition). There are many formulations of state-and-transition models in the literature. The version we endorse does not adhere to any particular generalities about ecosystem dynamics, but it includes consideration of several kinds of dynamics and management response to them. In contrast to previous uses of state-and-transition models, we propose that models can, at present, be most effectively used to specify and qualitatively compare the relative benefits and potential risks of different management actions (e.g., fire and grazing) and other factors (e.g., invasive species and climate change) on specified areas of land. High spatial and temporal variability and complex interactions preclude the meaningful use of general quantitative models. Forecasts can be made on a case-by-case basis by interpreting qualitative and quantitative indicators, historical data, and spatially structured monitoring data based on conceptual models. We illustrate how science- based conceptual models are created using several rangeland examples that vary in complexity. In doing so, we illustrate the implications of designating plant communities and states in models, accounting for varying scales of pattern in vegetation and soils, interpreting the presence of plant communities on different soils and dealing with our uncertainty about how those communities were assembled and how they will change in the future. We conclude with observations about how models have helped to improve management decision-making. 相似文献

Agricultural water management (AWM) is an interdisciplinary concern, cutting across traditional domains such as agronomy, climatology, geology, economics, and sociology. Each of these disciplines has developed numerous process‐based and empirical models for AWM. However, models that simulate all major hydrologic, water quality, and crop growth processes in agricultural systems are still lacking. As computers become more powerful, more researchers are choosing to integrate existing models to account for these major processes rather than building new cross‐disciplinary models. Model integration carries the hope that, as in a real system, the sum of the model will be greater than the parts. However, models based upon simplified and unrealistic assumptions of physical or empirical processes can generate misleading results which are not useful for informing policy. In this article, we use literature and case studies from the High Plains Aquifer and Southeastern United States regions to elucidate the challenges and opportunities associated with integrated modeling for AWM and recommend conditions in which to use integrated models. Additionally, we examine the potential contributions of integrated modeling to AWM — the actual practice of conserving water while maximizing productivity. PROFILE: Tourism Contribution to Agro-Ecosystems Conservation: The Case of Lesbos Island, Greece 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of tourism activities on olive tree cultivation and the human population
of the island of Lesbos. The presence or absence of tourism is related with the maintenance or abandonment of olive tree cultivation
and population changes for each community. A spatial segregation of the island is evident, related to tourist development,
olive tree cultivation, and population change. The results of the study demonstrate that in communities where tourism plays
an important role olive tree cultivation is preserved and the population is stable. The preservation of the agro-ecosystem
is assured while the olive groves remain productive. Simultaneously, the landscape, which provides specific attractions for
tourism, is not altered. 相似文献

The impact of the management of packaging waste on the environment, economic growth and job creation is analyzed in this paper. This integrated assessment intends to cover a gap in the literature for this type of studies, using the specific case study of the Portuguese packaging waste management system (SIGRE).The net environmental benefits associated with the management of packaging waste, are calculated using the Life Cycle Assessment methodology. The results show that, for the categories studied, the impacts associated to SIGRE's various activities are surpassed by the benefits associated to material and energy recovery, with special focus on recycling. For example, in 2011 SIGRE avoided the emission of 116 kt CO2 equiv. – the equivalent carbon emission of the electricity consumption of 124.000 households in Portugal. The economic impact of SIGRE is evaluated through Input–Output Analysis. It was found that SIGRE's activities also have a significant economic impact. For example, their added value are ranked amongst the upper third of the economic activities with highest multiplier effect at national level: this means that for each Euro of value added generated within SIGRE, 1.25 additional € are added to the rest of the economy (multiplier effect of 2.25).Regarding the social impacts of SIGRE, the number of direct jobs associated with the system is estimated to be more than two thousand and three hundred workers. Out of these, 83% are connected to the management of municipal waste packaging (selective collection and sorting), 15% are connected to the management of non-municipal packaging waste and only 2% are connected to the Sociedade Ponto Verde (SPV, green dot society in English) – the management entity responsible for SIGRE.In general terms, the results obtained provide quantitative support to the EEA (2011) suggestion that moving up the waste hierarchy – from landfilling to recycling – creates jobs and boosts the economy. 相似文献
