Rotary kiln incinerators and cement kilns are two energy intensive processes, requiring high temperatures that can be obtained by the combustion of fossil fuel. In both processes, fossil fuel is often substituted by high or medium calorific waste to avoid resource depletion and to save costs. Two types of industrial calorific waste streams are considered: automotive shredder residue (ASR) and meat and bone meal (MBM). These waste streams are of current high interest: ASR must be diverted from landfill, while MBM can no longer be used for cattle feeding. The environmental impact of the incineration of these waste streams is assessed and compared for both a rotary kiln and a cement kiln. For this purpose, data from an extensive emission inventory is applied for assessing the environmental impact using two different modeling approaches: one focusing on the impact of the relevant flows to and from the process and its subsystems, the other describing the change of environmental impact in response to these physical flows. Both ways of assessing emphasize different aspects of the considered processes. Attention is paid to assumptions in the methodology that can influence the outcome and conclusions of the assessment. It is concluded that for the incineration of calorific wastes, rotary kilns are generally preferred. Nevertheless, cement kilns show opportunities in improving their environmental impact when substituting their currently used fuels by more clean calorific waste streams, if this improvement is not at the expense of the actual environmental impact. 相似文献

In order to simulate granular materials structure in a rotary kiln under the steady-state regime, a mathematical model has been developed by Saeman (1951). This model enables the calculation of the bed profiles, the axial velocity and solids flow rate along the kiln. This model can be coupled with a thermochemical model, in the case of a reacting moving bed. This dynamic model was used to calculate the bed profile for an industrial size kiln and the model projections were validated by measurements in a 4 m diameter by 16 m long industrial rotary kiln. The effect of rotation speed under solids bed profile and the effect of the feed rate under filling degree were established. On the basis of the calculations and the experimental results a phenomenological relation for the residence time estimation was proposed for the rotary kiln. 相似文献

Waste incineration is becoming increasingly necessary to tackle the rapidly rising amounts of municipal solid waste (MSW);
in China many large cities are already surrounded by a girdle of landfills. Still, the not-in-my-backyard (nimby) syndrome
holds strong. This attitude stems from fear of dioxins. These have been associated with incineration (‘dioxin factories’)
and at times also with polyvinylchloride. In this paper this issue is analysed. China should build additional trust in MSW

It is necessary to develop technical systems for controlling and monitoring dioxins in stack gas from waste incineration facilities. However, it required much labor, high technical skill and extreme cost to measure dioxins for obtaining the toxic equivalent quantity (TEQ) values. In this study, the positive correlations of the WHO-TEQ values of PCDDs/PCDFs/Co-PCBs or PCDDs/PCDFs with the conventional I-TEQ values of PCDDs/PCDFs were confirmed beforehand for a large number of incineration facilities in a wide concentration range of a hundred thousand times. The relationships between the TEQ values and the concentrations of total PCDDs/PCDFs, each toxic isomer of PCDDs/PCDFs, total Cl4-6BZs, or each homologue of Cl4-6BZs were investigated for various incineration facilities. And it was found that positive correlations of the TEQ values with the concentrations of total PCDDs/PCDFs, 2,3,4,7,8-P5CDF, or Cl5BZ for a large number of different incineration facilities and in a wide concentration range. Consequently, the concentrations of total PCDDs/PCDFs, 2,3,4,7,8-P5CDF and Cl5BZ, whose measuring methods are much easier than that of obtaining the TEQ values, could be used as convenient substitute indices to the TEQ values for controlling and monitoring dioxins in stack gas from various waste incineration facilities. 相似文献

Malaysia is in dire need of alternatives to landfilling for solid waste management. Recently, landfills have faced the problems
of overfilling, overflowing of leachates leading to pollution of water resources, and uncontrolled dust emissions adversely
affecting the local environment. With the rising cost of urbanization coupled with the high rate of waste generation, one
possible method of waste treatment that is receiving particular attention by the government is incineration. Incineration
of solid waste is rather new in Malaysia, with limited usage in handling small sources of waste generation such as the municipal
solid waste (MSW) of resort islands; however, its potential in ameliorating the problems associated with solid waste treatment
may make it an attractive alternative to landfill. This article presents the results of test runs conducted to investigate
the performance of a locally designed and manufactured rotary kiln incinerator (RKI). The test runs were conducted using MSW
collected from the Shah Alam municipality. The combustion efficiency was analyzed by looking at the temperature profiles and
chemical species concentrations. To complement the combustion characteristics measurements, predictions of the air flow in
the incinerator during the process were also investigated. The overall performance of the RKI suggests that it is suitable

A method for collection of trace metals on the surface of submicron particles as well as metal vapour is described. The method and the proposed device are based on particle enlargement by condensation of acidic vapour and subsequent collection by an impactor. The device is intended for use as calibration standard for testing high load sampling systems in stack gas emission measurements. As an example, the collection efficiency of coarse quarts fibre filters towards Zn, Cd, Pb and Cu has been assessed during stack gas sampling from waste incinerators. The filter penetration is discussed in relation to sampling precision, and requirements in the selection of trace metal sampling systems are considered. Less than 13% (in average) of emitted Zn, Cd, Pb and Cu penetrates the commonly used quarts fibre filters. 相似文献

The environmental impacts of recycling, mechanical biological treatments (MBT) and waste-to-energy incineration, the main management strategies to respond to the increasing production of post-consumer materials are reviewed and compared. Several studies carried out according to life-cycle assessment (LCA) confirm that the lowest environmental impact, on a global scale, is obtained by recycling and by biological treatments (composting and anaerobic fermentations) if compost is used in agriculture. The available air emission factors suggest that, on a local scale, mechanical biological treatments with energy recovery of biogas, may be intrinsically safer than waste-to-energy incinerators. Several studies confirm the capability of biological treatments to degrade many toxic xenobiotic contaminating urban wastes such as dioxins and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, an important property to be improved, for safe agricultural use of compost. Further LCA studies to compare the environmental impact of MBTs and of waste-to-energy incinerators are recommended. 相似文献

A large number of particles and gaseous products are generated by waste combustion processes. Of particular importance are the ultrafine particles (less than 0.1 microm in aerodynamic diameter) that are emitted in large quantities from all the combustion sources. Recent findings of toxicological and epidemiological studies indicate that fine and ultrafine particles could represent health and environmental risks. Quantifying particulate emissions from combustion sources is important: (i) to examine the source status in compliance with regulations; (ii) to create inventories of such emissions at local, regional and national levels, for developing appropriate management and control strategies in relation to air quality; (iii) to predict ambient air quality in the areas involved at the source and (iv) to perform source apportionment and exposure assessment for the human populations and/or ecological systems involved. In order to control and mitigate the particles in the view of health and environmental risk reduction, a good understanding of the relative and absolute contribution from the emission sources to the airborne concentrations is necessary. For these purposes, the concentration and size distribution of particles in terms of mass and number in a waste gas of a municipal waste incineration plant were measured in the stack gas. The mass concentrations obtained are well below the imposed daily threshold value for both incineration lines and the mass size distribution is on average very stable. The total number concentrations are between 1 x 10(5) and 2 x 10(5)particles/cm(3) and are on average relatively stable from one test to another. The measured values and the comparison with other point sources show a very low total number concentration of particles at the stack gas, revealing the importance of the flue gas treatment also for ultrafine particles. Within recent years, researchers and authorities have had increasing focus on leaching properties from waste incineration bottom ashes. Researchers have investigated processes such as those related to carbonation, weathering, metal complexation, and leaching control. Most of these investigations, however, have had a strong emphasis on lab experiments with little focus on full-scale bottom ash upgrading methods. The introduction of regulatory limit values restricting leaching from utilized bottom ashes, has created a need for a better understanding of how lab-scale experiences can be utilized in full-scale bottom ash upgrading facilities, and the possibilities for complying with the regulatory limit values. A range of Danish research and development projects have, during 1997-2005, investigated important techniques for bottom ash upgrading. The primary focus has been placed on curing/aging, washing with and without additives, organic matter, sampling techniques, utilization options, and assessment tools. This paper provides an overview of these projects. The main results and experiences are discussed and evaluated with respect to bottom ash upgrading and utilization. Based on this discussion, development needs and potential management strategies are identified. 相似文献

Municipal solid waste incineration contributes with 20% of the heat supplied to the more than 400 district heating networks in Denmark. In evaluation of the environmental consequences of this heat production, the typical approach has been to assume that other (fossil) fuels could be saved on a 1:1 basis (e.g. 1 GJ of waste heat delivered substitutes for 1 GJ of coal-based heat). This paper investigates consequences of waste-based heat substitution in two specific Danish district heating networks and the energy-associated interactions between the plants connected to these networks. Despite almost equal electricity and heat efficiencies at the waste incinerators connected to the two district heating networks, the energy and CO2 accounts showed significantly different results: waste incineration in one network caused a CO2 saving of 48 kg CO2/GJ energy input while in the other network a load of 43 kg CO2/GJ. This was caused mainly by differences in operation mode and fuel types of the other heat producing plants attached to the networks. The paper clearly indicates that simple evaluations of waste-to-energy efficiencies at the incinerator are insufficient for assessing the consequences of heat substitution in district heating network systems. The paper also shows that using national averages for heat substitution will not provide a correct answer: local conditions need to be addressed thoroughly otherwise we may fail to assess correctly the heat recovery from waste incineration. 相似文献

The methodology for evaluating the impacts and damage costs ('external costs') due to pollution from waste treatment is described and the results are presented, based on the ExternE project series of the European Commission. The damage costs of landfill and incineration of municipal solid waste are compared, with due account for energy and materials recovery, as well as possible differences in transport distance. We have not been able to quantify the total damage costs of leachates because of the complexity of the environmental pathways and of the long time horizon of some persistent pollutants, but we consider an extreme scenario to show that they are not worth worrying about in the sense that reducing the pollutants in leachates beyond current regulations would bring negligible benefit in comparison with the abatement of other sources of the same pollutants. The damage costs due to the construction of the waste treatment facility are negligible. The damage costs of waste transport, which are illustrated by an arbitrary choice of a 100 km round trip by a 16 tonne truck, are also negligible. The benefits of materials recovery make a small contribution to the total damage cost. The only significant contributions come from direct emissions (of the landfill or incinerator) and from avoided emissions due to energy recovery (from an incinerator). Damage costs for incineration range from about 4 to 21 EUR tonne waste(-1), and they are extremely dependent on the assumed scenario for energy recovery. For landfill the cost ranges from about 10 to 13 EUR tonne waste(-1); it is dominated by greenhouse gas emissions because only a fraction of the CH4 can be captured (here assumed to be 70%). Amenity costs (odour, visual impact, noise) are highly site-specific and we only cite results from a literature survey which indicates that such costs could make a significant contribution, very roughly on the order of 1 EUR tonne waste(-1). 相似文献

Metal capture experiments were carried out in an atmospheric fluidized bed incinerator to investigate the effect of sulfur and chlorine on metal capture efficiency and the potential for simultaneous capture of metal, sulfur and chlorine by sorbents. In addition to experimental investigation, the effect of sulfur and chlorine on the metal capture process was also theoretically investigated through performing equilibrium calculations based on the minimization of system free energy. The observed results have indicated that, in general, the existence of sulfur and chlorine enhances the efficiency of metal capture especially at low to medium combustion temperatures. The capture mechanisms appear to include particulate scrubbing and chemisorption depending on the type of sorbents. Among the three sorbents tested, calcined limestone is capable of capturing all the three air pollutants simultaneously. The results also indicate that a mixture of the three sorbents, in general, captures more metals than a single sorbent during the process. In addition, the existence of sulfur and chlorine apparently enhances the metal capture process. 相似文献

This paper deals with a key issue related to municipal waste incineration, which is the efficiency of energy recovery. A strong driver for improving the energy performances of waste-to-energy plants is the recent Waste Framework Directive (Directive 2008/98/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 19 November 2008 on waste and repealing certain Directives), which allows high efficiency installations to benefit from a status of “recovery” rather than “disposal”. The change in designation means a step up in the waste hierarchy, where the lowest level of priority is now restricted to landfilling and low efficiency wastes incineration. The so-called “R1 formula” reported in the Directive, which counts for both production of power and heat, is critically analyzed and correlated to the more scientific-based approach of exergy efficiency. The results obtained for waste-to-energy plants currently operating in Europe reveal some significant differences in their performance, mainly related to the average size and to the availability of a heat market (district heating). 相似文献

After the deadly earthquake on May 12, 2008 in Wenchuan county of China, several different incineration approaches were used for medical waste disposal. This paper investigates the generation properties of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) during the incineration. Samples were collected from the bottom ash in an open burning slash site, surface soil at the open burning site, bottom ash from a simple incinerator, bottom ash generated from the municipal solid waste (MSW) incinerator used for medical waste disposal, and bottom ash and fly ash from an incinerator exclusively used for medical waste. The species of PAHs were analyzed, and the toxicity equivalency quantities (TEQs) of samples calculated. Analysis results indicate that the content of total PAHs in fly ash was 1.8 × 103 times higher than that in bottom ash, and that the strongly carcinogenic PAHs with four or more rings accumulated sensitively in fly ash. The test results of samples gathered from open burning site demonstrate that Acenaphthylene (ACY), Acenaphthene (ACE), Fluorene (FLU), Phenanthrene (PHE), Anthracene (ANT) and other PAHs were inclined to migrate into surrounding environment along air and surface watershed corridors, while 4- to 6-ring PAHs accumulated more likely in soil. Being consistent with other studies, it has also been confirmed that increases in both free oxygen molecules and combustion temperatures could promote the decomposition of polycyclic PAHs. In addition, without the influence of combustion conditions, there is a positive correlation between total PCDD/Fs and total PAHs, although no such relationship has been found for TEQ. 相似文献
