The effect of temperature on the life history of various representatives of the meiofauna associated with decaying mangrove (Rhizophora mangle) leaves was investigated. Life cycles, recorded in days, for 6 species of marine nematodes cultured at a temperature of 24°C are as follows: Rhabditis marina 2 1/4; Diplolaimelloides sp., 7; Diplolaimella ocellata, 11 1/2; Enoplus paralittoralis, 22; Oncholaimus sp., 29; Haliplectus dorsalis, 34. In general, life cycles become shorter with increased temperatures; however, as temperatures approach the upper limits which support reproduction, life cycles become slightly lengthened. For most species, the ability to complete a life cycle was inconsistent within the temperature range of 33° to 35°C. Measurements in situ were made of oxygen exchange and 14C fixation in calcareous sediments off the coast of Florida, USA, and at various sites in the Caribbean Sea at depths to 60 m. Sediment samples were analyzed for total organic carbon, nitrogen and photosynthetic pigments. In some cases, measurements were made of the pH of sediment interstitial water and its concentration of total CO2. Siderastrea siderea and Montastrea annularis were labeled in situ with NaH14CO3. The corals were sampled over a period of 11 days and the radioactivity remaining in the ethanolsoluble and ammonia-soluble fractions measured. Total radioactivity in the corals fell to about 1/3 after one night and then to about 1/3 in the next 10 days. Observations were made on the brooding behavior of 10 laboratory reared female Octopus joubini, including egg laying, care of the eggs, feeding during brooding, and survival of the female from the onset of egg laying. Data concerning the numbers of eggs laid by each female and hatching (duration, frequency, correlation of duration to water temperature, etc.) are given. The newly hatched octopuses (whose ages were determined within 24 h) were fed Uca spp. to determine their growth rate from hatching to 4 months of age. When the predatory sea star Pycnopodia helianthoides was placed upstream, the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus purpuratus responded defensively by extending and opening its globiferous pedicellariae. No pedicellaria response was given in control seawater or when the sea star was downstream. The snail Tegula funebralis responded by moving up vertical surfaces when Pycnopodia helianthoides or when Pisaster ochraceus were placed upstream. When these sea stars were introduced downstream, the snail's response was not significantly different from that in control seawater. Water collected from an aquarium containing a single sea star was sufficient to trigger the response of S. purpuratus and T. funebralis; the physical presence of the sea star was not essential. This indicated that a chemical stimulus was involved, and the lack of responses when sea stars were downstream argued strongly against the possible additional involvement of visual or vibrational stimuli. S. purpuratus gave stronger pedicellaria responses to water flowing over an active Pycnopodia helianthoides than to water flowing over the same sea star when it was inactive. The significance of the ability to distinguish between actively foraging and inactive predators is discussed, and a mechanism is proposed to explain differences in the amount of stimulatory chemicals released by active and inactive sea stars.  相似文献

Significant concentrations of the large oncholaimid Metoncholaimus scissus Wieser and Hopper (1967) (>7000 animals/24 cm2 area or 2.68x106 specimens/m2) have been noted in soft-bottom turtle grass communities. Activities of the nematode frequently show an indirect relationship to blooms of the benthic diatom Pleurosigma balticum. Analysis of biomass data for M. scissus (as much as 28 g wet weight/m2) demonstrate the importance of microsite activity and sensitivity of the species to small significant changes in the benthic environment.This work was supported by grant GM 12824 from the National Institutes of Health to the Institute of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, University of Miami. Low level aerial observations were used to obtain synoptic records of the distribution of sea turtle nesting activity along both coasts of Costa Rica. Pertinent environmental information was simultaneously recorded including beach characteristics, river effluents, and evidence of coastal currents. Other correlative information was obtained from detailed maps, current charts, and climatological data. On the Caribbean coast, as expected, green turtle (Chelonia mydas) nesting was concentrated on the beaches between the Tortuguero and Parismina Rivers. On the Pacific coast, two major nesting beaches for the Pacific ridley Lepidochelys olivacea were found, each having over 100 thousand turtles aggregated offshore during the peak period between September and November. Aggregations were present at least from July through December. Massed nesting occurs each year on these same beaches and the event is known as the salida de flota by the natives of Guanacaste Province. Numerous less important nesting beaches were also found. Nesting density did not correlate well with beach quality but, instead, appeared to be related to the proximity of the beach to offshore currents. Feeding by larvae of the sea bream Archosargus rhomboidalis (Linnaeus) was investigated from late September, 1972 to early May, 1973 using laboratory-reared larvae. Fertilized eggs were collected from plankton tows in Biscayne Bay, and the larvae were reared on zooplankton also collected in plankton nets. Techniques were developed to estimate feeding rate, food selection, gross growth efficiency, and daily ration. Daily estimates of these were obtained through 16 days after hatching at rearing temperatures of 23°, 26°, and 29°C. Feeding rate increased exponentially as the larvae grew, and increased as temperature was raised. At 23°C larvae began feeding on Day 3, at 26° and 29°C larvae began feeding on Day 2. Feeding rates at initiation of feeding and on Day 16 were, respectively: 23°C, 7.16 food organisms per larva per hour (flh) and 53.78 flh; 26°C, 7.90 flh and 168.80 flh; 29°C, 17.62 flh and 142.07 flh. Sea bream larvae selected food organisms by size. At initiation of feeding they selected organisms less than 100 m in width. As larvae grew they selected larger organisms and rejected smaller ones. The major food (more than85% of the organisms ingested) was copepod nauplii, copepodites, and copepod adults. Minor food items were barnacle nauplii, tintinnids, invertebrate eggs, and polychaete larvae. Mean values for gross growth efficiency of sea bream larvae ranged from 30.6% at 23°C to 23.9% at 29°C. Marine phytoplankton forms are frequently exposed to sudden biological changes such as rapid rise in water temperature and chlorine content of their environment, resulting from the use of sea water for cooling purposes by electric generators. The direct influence of these effluents, i.e. inhibitory effects of high temperature and residual chlorine on growth and photosynthesis of Chlamydomonas sp. and Skeletonema costatum, were investigated experimentally. Chlamydomonas sp. and S. costatum exposed to high temperatures were affected in their growth from 43° and 35°C, respectively, by immersion of the respective cultures in a warm bath for 10 min. Treatment at high temperatures of 40 °C and 30° 35°C for 10 min, influenced their photosynthetic activities, which were completely inhibited immediately after 10 min exposure at 42° and 37 °C, respectively. S. costatum was killed by chlorine at a concentration of 1.5 2.3 ppm when exposed for exactly 5 or 10 min, while Chlamydomonas sp. was not irreversibly damaged even at 20 ppm chlorine or more with the same exposure period. These results lead to the conclusion that the high temperature of, and residual chlorine in, effuents from a power plant discharging into the open sea, should not cause great damage to marine phytoplankton in that area.  相似文献

Gut analyses of the green sea urchin Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis (O. F. Müller) demonstrated that perennial phaeophytes, mostly fucoids and Alaria esculenta, were predominant in the diet. Ephemeral species, coralline algae and animals, were consumed in smaller amounts when available. Grazing by the urchins is evidently responsible for the dearth of non-coralline sublittoral algae in Newfoundland waters. The present study provides the first analysis of the feeding macroecology of territorial damselfishes (Perciformes: Pomacentridae), a circumtropical family whose feeding and behavioral activities are important in structuring tropical and subtropical reef benthic communities. The analyses were conducted from data collected by the authors and from the literature. A strong positive correlation was observed between bite rates and sea surface temperature (SST) for the genus Stegastes. A negative correlation was found between bite rates and mean body size for the genera Stegastes and Pomacentrus, but this relationship was not significant when all territorial pomacentrids were analyzed together. A negative correlation between body size and SST was observed for the whole group and for the genera Stegastes, and Pomacentrus. No relationship was found between territory size and feeding rates. Principal Components Analysis showed that differences in feeding rates accounted for most of the variability in the data. It also suggested that body size may be important in characterizing the different genera. In general, tropical species are smaller and have higher bite rates than subtropical ones. This study extended the validity of Bergmann’s rule, which states that larger species or larger individuals within species occur towards higher latitudes and/or lower temperatures, for an important group of reef fishes. The identification of large-scale, robust ecological patterns in the feeding ecology of pomacentrid fishes may establish a foundation for predicting large-scale changes in reef fish assemblages with expected future changes in global SST.  相似文献

Partitioning of the food resources by two coexisting pufferfishes (Sphoeroides spengleri and S. testudineus) from Biscayne Bay, Florida, USA, was investigated. Gut contents from 453 bandtail and 339 checkered puffers were analyzed. The diets of both species consisted of a variety of benthic prey, but only crustaceans and molluscs were important prey groups. While differences were found in the proportions of general prey categories eaten by these fishes, both species consumed substantial quantities of brachyuran crabs, bivalves, and gastropods. Specific identification of the prey items within these three food categories revealed additional differences in prey between the two puffer species. This partitioning of the food resources by bandtail and checkered puffers was found between both species overall, between overlapping size ranges, and between both species' most abundant size group. Certain phases of the ecology of a sea cucumber (Cucumaria pseudocurata Deichmann, 1938) population at Shell Beach, Sonoma County, California (USA), were investigated. The sea cucumber is a brooder, lays large (1 mm diameter) yolky eggs, which undergo direct development. It forms large aggregations in the rocky intertidal zone, extending from the lower boundary of the Mytilus californianus beds to about zero tide-level. The gonad cycle was followed from September, 1970 to January, 1972. Spawning occurred in January, 1971 and January, 1972. The holothurians produce from 1 to as many as 340 eggs, depending on the size of the individual; they completely spawn-out in a few days. Hatching takes place about 1 month after egg laying. The main sources of mortality are predation by the sea star Pycnopodia helianthoides and wave action. Survival of the young is negatively correlated with density of the aggregation. C. pseudocurata increases in weight 10 to 30 fold in the first year, but much more slowly in later years. Individuals live perhaps 5 years or more, and do not become reproductive until about the third year. Dispersal is accomplished by the young being washed away to a suitable new habitat. The upper range of the intertidal distribution is determined by exposure to air, and the lower range by P. helianthoides predation.Contribution No. 1 of the Bodega Marine Sciences Association.  相似文献

Productivity figures are available for most of the species comprising a few soft-bottom communities in the Miami area, USA. These are in the form of the ratio of annual somatic production to standing crop, both being measured as drytissue weight. These values have been converted to carbonate productivity ratios, and from these the carbonate production per square metre per year calculated. The rate of filtering Phaeodactylum tricornutum and Isochrysis galbana was measured in Hiatella arctica (L.) by the indirect suspension depletion method monitored by optical density measurement. The filtration rate of H. arctica was found to be 1.412×10–2 l/h/g wet weight at a temperature of 15°C when fed with P. tricornutum, at average cell concentrations up to 3.5×106 cells/ml. The filtration rate dropped almost to zero when the concentration of P. tricornutum reached 11×106 cells/ml. The filtration rate of I. galbana diminished at a much lower cell concentration of 1×106 cells/ml, and almost ceased at 3 to 4×106 cells/ml. In mixed cultures of I. galbana and P. tricornutum, the filtration rate ratio was 0.37 to 1.00, and this was believed to be due to a proportion of the smaller former cells passing through the ostia. However, when resuspended in sea water, I. galbana cells were taken at a rate slightly less than P. tricornutum. The medium in which the I. galbana cells had been grown was inhibitory to the filtering activity of H. arctica, since, when cells of either alga were resuspended in the medium, the filtration rate was considerably reduced. No inhibitory factor existed in either of the original nutrient media. Hence, the importance of using low cell concentrations and of eliminating any inhibitory metabolic products when measuring filtration rates of bivalves is stressed. H. arctica shows a typical activity temperature eurve for a boreo-arctic species, with a steady rise from 0°C to a maximum between 15° and 17°C, and a sharp fall in activity to about zero at 25°C. The rates of filtration of various species at temperatures approaching the optimum were compared after allowance was made for fall in filtration rate with increasing body weight. The results suggested that the Mytilacea had the highest filtration rates and that H. arctica possesses one of the lowest filtration rates recorded.  相似文献

A technique for rearing the loliginid squids Sepioteuthis sepioidea and Doryteuthis plei is reported. Specimens of the former were reared from eggs to sexually mature adults, and maintained for a maximum of 146 days; adult D. plei were maintained for 38 days. Choice and quantity of food was most important for the survival of all sizes, particularly young squid. Newly hatched specimens thrived on Mysidium columbiae. Both species fed at a rate of 30 to 60% of their body weight daily; starvation occurred when intake fell below 10 to 15%. Food conversion efficiency averaged between 10 to 20%. Growth was rapid and steady. S. sepioidea grew to a maximum of 105 mm and 77 g in less than 5 months; D. plei grew an estimated 20 mm/month. Experimental data indicate a lethal minimum salinity for both species at about 27. Lethal minimum and maximum temperatures for young S. sepioidea are 17.5° to 18.0°C, and 32.5° to 33.0°C, respectively. Young consume 0.64l O2/mg wet weight/h. The effects of temperature and body size on the intermolt periods (molting frequencies) of the North Pacific euphausíid Euphausia pacifica and the Mediterranean forms of Meganyctiphanes norvegica, Euphausia krohnii, Nematoscelis megalops, and Nyctiphanes couchii were studied under controlled conditions in the laboratory. Mean intermolt periods for E. pacifica and M. norvegica were inversely and linearly related to temperature, over temperature ranges which the euphausiids normally encounter in the sea. At higher temperatures there was a tendency for three size groups of M. norvegica to approach a minimum intermolt period independent of temperature. M. norvegica cycled for different time periods between 13° and 18°C molted regularly at mean frequencies which would be expected if the animals had been held constantly at the timeweighted means of the two experimental temperatures. The increase in mean intermolt period per unit weight was faster in small, fast-growing M. norvegica than in large, slow-growing adults. This relationship was corroborated by following the changes in the intermolt period of an actively growing individual N. couchii over an 11 month period. Neither feeding nor the time of year of collection affected the molting frequency as long as temperature and animal weight were held constant. No tendency was found for euphausiids of the same species and/or size, and from the same collection, to molt on the same night. Molting occurred at night 80 to 90% of the time for all species, over the temperature ranges normally experienced by the euphausiids in the sea, and over all animal weights tested. There appeared to be a weakening of the night-time molting rhythm at low temperatures. Although neither temperature nor anímal weight substantially affected the night-time molting rhythm, both affected the mean intermolt period. Therefore, both temperature and body size apparently act together to adjust the length of the intermolt period of each individual in increments of whole days, but they exert little control over time of molting within any 24h period. No information was obtained regarding the factors which specify night-time molting over daytime molting within any 24 h period; however, regulation of certain hormone activities is probably involved.  相似文献

Gravimetric analyses of cellulose (Solka Floc) utilization by representative marine Ascomycetes, including Lulworthia floridana, Lindra sp., Torpedospora sp. and Halosphaeria mediosetigera, have shown noteworthy activity based on loss of weight of cellulose by the various fungi. Particularly striking activity is evidenced by L. floridana and Torpedospora sp., with >50% cellulose degradation after 3 weeks of fungal growth. Comparable studies with the deuteromycete, Dendryphiella salina, showed >50% loss within 6 days. Dissimilar responses by various L. floridana isolates are noted. Intensive degradative activity at pH's of 6 to 8 is common along with negligible amounts of cellulase (Cx units). Adsorption of the enzyme to the mycelia or to the cellulose particles in the medium is suggested. A field data collection project was undertaken to investigate the short-term fate of dredged material discharged in the designated Miami Ocean Dredged Material Disposal Site (ODMDS) before dredging of the Miami River and the Miami Harbor Turning Basin begins. the designated ODMDS is located in relatively deep water for discharge sites with a typical bottom depth of 150 metres and is also located in the western boundary region of the Gulf Stream current off Miami. Acoustical backscattering, current, particulate, temperature and salinity data were gathered over a three day period from April 24, 1990 through April 26, 1990. the major generic features of shallow-water discharge plumes were observed to be present: (a) the presence of a rapid convective descending plume portion; (b) impact of that plume portion with the ocean bottom and concomitant generation of a bottom surge; (c) rapid horizontal width growth of the descending plume through entrainment; and (d) retention of a residual plume portion within the water column. A well-mixed upper water column layer extending to a depth of 40 to 60 metres below the surface of the ocean permitted measurements of the plume entrainment coefficient free from bottom boundary, water column density gradient, and vertical current shear effects which are usually present in relatively shallow, e.g. less than 40 metres bottom depth, coastal ocean discharge studies. Entrainment coefficient estimates obtained in this study were between 0.5 to 0.7. the residual water plume material was tracked over one-half hour during each of eight discharge events and was transported in a north-northeast direction.  相似文献
