To discern species-specific patterns in omnivory indices in copepods from the North Water Polynya, lipid classes and fatty acids were determined in Calanus hyperboreus Krøyer copepodite stage 5 (CV), C. glacialis Jaschnov (CV) and Metridia longa Lubbock (females) sampled below the mixed layer during autumn 1999. Generally, M. longa contained higher proportions of triacylglycerols, polar lipids and 18:1(n-9) than the other species. M. longa also had lower relative amounts of wax esters (WE), polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), 20:1(n-9), 22:1(n-11), and lower absolute (g lipid copepod-1) and relative (% lipid) lipid levels. Unsaturation coefficients (UC; ratio of polyunsaturated to total WE) were usually lowest in M. longa. These differences probably relate to a lesser dependence on phytoplankton in M. longa, and hence more ingestion of PUFA-poor prey. Moreover, levels of the carnivory index 18:1(n-9)/18:1(n-7) were highest in M. longa. Our data support the widespread contention that M. longa is more omnivorous than C. hyperboreus and C. glacialis. Proportions of bacterial fatty acids [odd-numbered and/or branched (OBFA); 18:1(n-7)] and PUFA/SFA (SFA: saturated fatty acids) ratios were largely unrelated to feeding strategy. Relationships between relative and absolute amounts of 16:1(n-7) and 18:1(n-7) in copepods suggest that the latter fatty acid is formed in vivo by chain elongation of the former. However, elevated levels of 18:1(n-7) and OBFA in M. longa at stations dominated by the microbial loop imply that these indices can be used to track ingestion of PUFA-poor protozoans when diatoms are scarce.Communicated by J.P. Free radicals induced by cigarette smoking have been linked to an increase in oxidative stress resulting in smoking-related cardiovascular diseases. However, the possible effect of honey that has antioxidant property in improving oxidative stress status among smokers has not yet been reported. Hence, this study was to determine the effects of 12-week Tualang honey supplementation on F2-isoprostanes, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, catalase, and total antioxidant status among chronic smokers. A total of 32 non-smokers and 64 chronic smokers were recruited from Quit Smoking Clinic and Health Campus, Universiti Sains, Malaysia. Smokers were randomized into two groups (n = 32/group) namely smokers without supplementation and smokers with honey supplementation (20 g/day) for 12 weeks. Blood was obtained from non-smokers and smokers at pre-intervention and from smokers at post-intervention. During pre-intervention, the levels/activity of F2-isoprostanes, total antioxidant status, and catalase were significantly higher while superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase were lower in smokers than non-smokers. During post-intervention, in supplemented smokers, there were significant decrease in F2-isoprostanes and increase in total antioxidant status, glutathione peroxidase and catalase levels/activities compared with pre-intervention. This study indicates that honey supplementation improves oxidative stress status suggesting a beneficial role of honey in reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases.  相似文献

A sensitive method was developed to analyze low molecular weight thiols involved in metal homeostasis and detoxification in phytoplankton. The aims of this study were to (1) separate and measure all relevant thiols in a single HPLC run, (2) measure redox states of the thiols and (3) identify specific responses of thiols (pools, redox) to heavy metals by testing diatoms with different metal tolerances (Ditylum brightwellii, Phaeodactylum tricornutum, Skeletonema costatum andThalassiosira pseudonana). Copper or cadmium were dosed at a maximum tolerable, species-dependent level, to exponential phase cells growing in artificial medium (14 salinity). Loss of cell viability was monitored by the decrease of fluorescein fluorescence after a 24-h metal exposure. Thiols in extracts of exposed cells and controls were labeled with monobromobimane. Picomoles of cysteine, glutathione, -glutamylcysteine and phytochelatins (PCs) were detected and separated by reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography. Cysteine increased in all species after metal exposure. The species with the largest glutathione pools in the control (P. tricornutum) synthesized the largest PC pools upon metal exposure, however, at a 40% loss of glutathione. A considerable increase of glutathione was observed inD. brightwellii upon metal exposure. However, it produced little PC (and only with Cu). In controls ( 3 pM Cu2+), PC2 was detectable inS. costatum, P. tricornutum andT. pseudonana. Oxidized thiol fractions were recovered by the reductants DTT and TCEP, both performing identically. Compared to the other thiols, cysteine had low redox ratios. InD. brightwellii glutathione and PC redox ratios were lower than inP. tricornutum, S. costatum andT. pseudonana. The mineral composition of nine species of red calcareous algae (Corallinaceae, Rhodophyta) collected in the Adriatic Sea in 1987 and 1988 was examined by X-ray powder diffraction (counter diffractometer, monochromatized CuK radiation). In addition, a comparison between the calcareous algae from the north Adriatic (Rovinj area) and the central Adriatic (Kornati Islands) with regard to genus, species and environmental factors was undertaken. All analyzed samples contained magnesium calcite, which was dominant in all but in two cases, where aragonite was the main phase. Diffraction lines of magnesium calcite were broadened and shifted toward higher Bragg angles in relation to pure calcite. Supposing that in the calcite crystal lattice only magnesium replaces calcium, it follows that the fraction of magnesium in magnesium calcite, found from diffraction line shifts, would be 18 molar % (M%). Aragonite was dominant (75 to 80 M%) in two samples of Pseudolithophyllum expansum collected at Kornati Islands in 1987 and 1988. These two samples also contained magnesium calcite and a small fraction of calcite (5 to 10 M%). In other studied samples aragonite was detected in small fractions, up to 10 M%. The elemental analysis of corallinacean algae obtained by X-ray spectroscopy showed that the fraction of the metals Sr, Fe, Mn, Zn, Pb, Br, Cu and Rb was very small (15 to 2000 ppm). In most samples other expected minerals were detected in small fractions, such as sylvite (KCl, up to 2 M%), quartz (-SiO2, up to 2 M%) and magnesite (MgCO3, only in one sample, 1 M%). The results show that calcareous algae are able to deposit a mixture of magnesium calcite, calcite and aragonite. Such a large molar fraction of aragonite in the alga P. expansum, or in any other corallinacean algae, has not been noted in recent literature. It seems that a complexity of microclimatic and oceanographic factors may influence the diversity of two localities and cause some exchange in living organisms. In addition, the fact that under certain conditions the same organism is capable of forming different minerals from the same tissue (McConnaughey 1989) confirms our opinion that environmental effects are imprinted in the skeletal composition of calcareous algae P. expansum.  相似文献

Susceptibility and response of bivalves, the clam Ruditapes decussatus, to zinc (Zn) were studied by monitoring behavior using valve movement and some biochemical parameters. The LC50 was 4.1 mg L?1 at 7 days. Depuration of Zn from their tissues was also followed. Accumulation of Zn increased with concentration and duration of exposure. After 20 days, Zn caused impairment of valve movement as well as the antioxidant system, decreasing glutathione and protein levels and increasing the lipid peroxidation which is indicative of oxidative damage. Results suggested that behavior and biochemical parameters of clam R. decussatus were sensitive and suitable responses for assessing the effects of Zn on the aquatic ecosystems. It could be concluded that there is a time–dose–response relationship of Zn with behavior and oxidative stress of R. decussatus.  相似文献

Trace-metal concentrations (Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn) were investigated in two species of abundant filter-feeding molluscs from Mauritania, the wedge shell Donax trunculus L. and the clam Venus verrucosa L. D. trunculus were collected on the beach of Nouakchott at low tide and V. verrucosa were sampled at the Banc d'Arguin at depths varying from 10 to 20 m, in mid-February 1987. D. trunculus contains significantly higher Fe and Zn concentrations than the clam. Total trace-metal content per individual (Y) in D. trunculus could be related to body weight (W) as the power function Y=aW b . The subsequent regression coefficient b was >1 for Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn and >1 for Cd. Metal concentrations in both species decreased in the order: Fe>Zn>Mn>Cu>Cd. Comparison of trace-metal concentrations in the small D. trunculus and the large V. verrucosa revealed lower contents in V. verrucosa, except for Cd. The trace-metal distribution in the various organs of V. verrucosa indicates that gills seem to concentrate metals, except Cu, to a greater degree than the other organs (visceral mass and remainder). The relatively elevated content of Fe in D. trunculus and of Cd, Fe and Zn in the gills of V. verrucosa seem to be of natural origin. In view of the scarcity of Mytilus sp. along the Mauritania coast, the molluscs D. trunculus and V. verrucosa are proposed as useful bioindicators of trace-metal concentrations.  相似文献

Influences of nutritional status on the photoinhibitory effects of ultraviolet-B radiation (UVBR: 290 to 320 nm) on the specific growth rates (obs) and biomass of Phaeodactylum tricornutum were determined using nutrient-replete batch cultures and nutrient-limited continuous cultures. P. tricornutum cultures were exposed to UVBR doses representative of current mid-latitude and ozone-depletion intensities. Specific growth rates and biomass were inhibited from 2 to 16% by UVBR during nutrient-replete growth. However, no effect of UVBR on obs or biomass was detectable when nutrient limitation exceeded the potential for limitation by UVBR. Thus, a competitive interaction appears to occur between macronutrient stress and UVBR stress, such that obs and biomass will be determined by the most limiting factor. Our results suggest that measurable decreases in phytoplankton obs and biomass from UVBR are most likely in nutrient-rich areas of the ocean, while these parameters may not be appropriate for measuring UVBR stress in regions of nutrient limitation.  相似文献

The uptake of nitrate and ammonium was investigated experimentally during early spring 1989 in the Greenland Sea, with particular attention placed on the roles of irradiance, nitrogen concentrations and nitrateammonium interactions. The phytoplankton assemblage was dominated by the colonial prymnesiophyte Phaeocystis pouchetii. Nitrate concentrations ranged from undetectable at the end of the cruise to greater than 10 M, and ammonium levels ranged from less than 0.1 to 1.9M. The uptake of both nitrate and ammonium as a function of irradiance was found to be a saturation response. Photoinhibition occurred and was found to be greater for ammonium uptake. Ammonium uptake also saturated at irradiance levels five times lower than those needed to saturate nitrate uptake. Nitrate and ammonium uptake as a function of nitrogen concentration also was characterized by a saturation response, with the estimated half-saturation constant (K s) value for nitrate uptake being 0.29 M. Elevated ammonium concentrations inhibited nitrate uptake, and the response appeared to be one of exponential decrease with increasing concentrations of ammonium. The most important factor in the Greenland Sea influencing ammonium uptake during the spring was irradiace, while both irradiance and ammonium concentrations played major roles in regulating nitrate uptake and new production.  相似文献

The effect of cadmium introduced as inorganic salts (chloride, nitrate, sulfate, carbonate, acetate and iodide) or organic chelates (with EDTA, NTA and humic acid) on the physiological behaviour of six species of tropical lamellibranchs — arcid blood clamsAnadara granosa andA. rhombea, venerid clamsMeretrix casta andKatelysia opima, and mytilid musselsPerna viridis andP. indica, collected from various intertidal areas in southern India from 1986 to 1989 — was evaluated. Inorganic salts of Cd are reported to completely ionize upon introduction to full-strength sea water and form predominantly (97%) chloride complexes. Some inorganic Cd salts, therefore, would hardly affect physiological parameters. However, bioaccumulation of Cd was greatest upon exposure to Cd introduced as sulfate, followed by iodide, acetate, chloride, nitrate and carbonate; 96-h LC50's also varied, but in a different order, being highest for chloride (3.5µg ml–1), followed by nitrate, acetate, iodide and sulfate (1.8µg ml–1). Furthermore, Cd levels increased linearly with time of exposure and levels in medium, and were species-specific, being highest in the arcid clams, followed by the venerid clams and mytilid mussels. The presence of other metals such as Zn reduced bioaccumulation of Cd significantly (P < 0.001), but the reverse was not true. Upon exposure to Cd in the presence of Cu, on the other hand, accumulation of both metals was reduced by 15 to 20%. In the presence of organic chelators — EDTA, NTA and reduced glutathione (GSH) — Cd accumulation was significantly inhibited, by 1/2 to 1/3. Humic acid, on the other hand, had no effect. Cd levels in soft tissues were inversely related to ambient salinity in the range of 12 to 32. However, both Zn and Cu significantly inhibited Cd accumulation irrespective of salinity. Cd increased the rate of filtration inAnadara granosa over the first 24 h by 28%, but on prolonged exposure (96 h) that rate decreased significantly, by 50%. Zn alone and in the presence of Cd, on the contrary, initially reduced filtration activity, which subsequently increased to control levels upon continued exposure. Cu alone and in combination with Cd and Zn also significantly (P < 0.001) inhibited filtration relative to controls. This combination also progressively reduced respiratory activity with time, the maximum decrease being 80% after 96 h of exposure. Furthermore, impact of all three metals on both filtration rate and oxygen consumption was initially synergistic, but changed to antagonistic upon prolonged exposure up to 96 h.Deceased. Adults of the softshell clam Mya arenaria were continuously subjected to a flowing raw seawater solution containing a mixture of salts of manganese, zinc, lead, nickel, copper, and cadmium. Final calculated concentrations, in g l-1, of the toxicant solution were 7200 Mn, 2500 Zn, 70 Pb, 50 Ni, 50 Cu and 1 Cd; these concentrations approximated highest measured levels within surficial interstitial sediment waters from mid-Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island. M. arenaria were also subjected to a 20% solution, i.e., 1440 Mn, 500 Zn, 14 Pb, 10 Ni, 10 Cu, and 0.2 g l-1 Cd. One study was conducted for 112 days in winter at 0° to 10°C and another for 16 days in summer at 16° to 22°C. In the winter study, all clams exposed to a 100% solution died between the 4th and 10th week; soft parts of survivors at 6 weeks contained about 19 times more Pb, 15 x more Zn, 12 x more Cu, 10 x more Mn, 3 x more Ni and 0.1 x more Cd than controls; relatively minor changes in whole body elemental content of Ca, Cr, Fe, K, Mg, Na, Sr, and V were observed. Clams exposed to a 20% solution during winter survived the 112 day study; at that time these contained about 5 x more Cu, 4 x more Mn, 3 x more Zn and about 2 x more Pb than controls; comparatively minor changes were observed in other elements examined. In the summer study, all M. arenaria subjected to the 100% solution died between 6 and 14 days; survivors from this group at 7 days contained about 25 x more Pb, 13 x more Cu, 11 x more Zn, 7 x more Mn, and 3 x more Ni than controls; other changes in elemental content were not as pronounced. Mortality in the 20% group during summer was slightly higher than controls during the 16 day study; at 14 days survivors from this group contained about 12 x more Mn, 7 x more Pb, 7 x more Zn, 4 x more Cu, and 3 x more Ni than controls. Survival and bioaccumulation patterns were not altered through feeding a supplemental diet of algae. The significance of these findings are discussed in terms of potential environmental perturbations, especially local dredging practices.  相似文献

The uptake and effect of dissolved copper on regulation of hemolymph osmolality and Na+, K+, Cl-, Ca++, and Mg++ concentrations in the shore crab Carcinus maenas (L.) were determined at 400 mOsm (=14 S) ambient salinity. One mg Cu l-1 resulted in 50% mortality in 11 to 22 d; the highest sensitivity was observed around the moulting period. 0.25 and 0.5 mg Cu l-1 were not lethal after a onemonth exposure. Ten, 1, and 0.5 mg Cu l-1 altered regulation of osmolality, Na+, K+, and Cl- concentrations, while 0.25 mg Cu l-1 did not. Exposure to 1 mg Cu l-1 reduced hemolymph osmolality and Na+, K+, and Cl- concentrations to 80 to 90% of controls within 4 to 6 d and no further reduction was observed during a 21-d exposure. The effect of various copper concentrations on these four parameters were almost identical and the highest sensitivity was observed around the moulting period. Hemolymph calcium levels increased 20 to 80% in crabs exposed to 1 mg Cu l-1, while they decreased 20 to 30% in crabs exposed to 0.5 mg Cu l-1. Prolonged exposure to copper caused 20 to 70% reductions in hemolymph magnesium levels. Crabs exposed to 0.5 mg Cu l-1 for 29 d accumulated copper in hepatopancreas, gills, carapace, heart, testes, and hypodermis, but not in muscles and hemolymph. Increased copper levels in crabs exposed to 0.25 mg Cu l-1 were observed in hepatopancreas, gills, and carapace only. The present results suggest that effects of copper on ion regulatory processes in part explain why the toxicity of copper towards euryhaline invertebrates increases at low salinities.  相似文献

The effect of sublethal additions of mercuric chloride on the marine diatomSkeletonema costatum (Grev.) Cleve grown in NH4-limited chemostats and batch cultures was assessed. In short-term Hg exposure experiments (up to 5 h), the effect of Hg on ammonium uptake rates was studied by simulatneously perturbing the culture with 5 M NH4 Cl and Hg concentrations ranging from 0.04 to 5.52 nM HgCl2. The threshold of Hg toxicity occurred between 1.8 and 3.7 nM, based on a decrease in ammonium uptake rates. When the NH4-limited culture was starved of ammonium for 30 h, the threshold of Hg toxicity decreased about an order of magnitude to 0.2 nM. In long-term Hg exposure experiments (679.5 h), NH4-limited continuous cultures were semi-continuously exposed to 0.37 and 3.68 nM HgCl2. After 4 days, the cell density in the Hg-treated chemostats began to drastically decline. After about 16 days these populations recovered, even though Hg additions continued. At the end of the experiment (26 days), cell densities had reached the levels observed at the beginning of the experiment. The reason for the recovery is unknown, but several possibilities are discussed. Ammonium uptake rates determined during the time-course of this long-term Hg exposure, indicated that these NH4-limited cultures exhibited a significant loss in their ability to take up ammonium at low concentrations (e.g. 1 M). Thus, mercury pollution may seriously decrease the ability of a species to utilize the limiting nutrient during periods of seasonal nutrient limitation.  相似文献

The phosphorus metabolism of Pyrocystis noctiluca Murray (Schuett) 1886 has characteristics which may enhance its potential for success in orthophosphate impoverished waters. The steady-state phosphate uptake rates were equal in the light and dark, and were directly proportional to both the phosphorus cell quota and the cell division rate. In contrast, nutrient-saturated uptake rates were multiphasic, faster in the light than the dark, 2 to 4 orders of magnitude greater than steady-state rates, and were inversely proportional to both the phosphorus cell quota and the cell division rate. These uptake characteristics suggest that P. noctiluca may take up phosphate coincidently at their typically low ambient concentrations as well as to exploit episodic nutrient events in nature. Cell division rates were a hyperbolic function of the ambient orthophosphate concentration. The shortest doubling time was 8.7 d, the phosphate concentration at half the maximum division rate was 0.15 M and the threshold, concentration for cell division was ca 0.05 M PO 4 3- . Division rates of P. noctiluca in the ocean are much faster than predicted from the measured ambient orthophosphate concentrations. Since this dinoflagellate has high naturally occurring alkaline phosphatase activities, and can utilize organic-P compounds, we suggest that organic-P can be as important as orthophosphate in supporting the observed division rates of P. noctiluca in the sea.  相似文献

This paper describes a study of the trace element distribution in sediments, marine water and mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis of the Venetian Lagoon around the Island of Murano, an island with a long tradition of glassmaking. Trace elements analysed include Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Cr, Pb, Ni, Ag and As. Sediments are contaminated with Zn, Cu, Ag, As and Pb, with levels in the <2m fraction that are likely to cause adverse biological effects to marine organisms. The pelite (<63m) is the main carrier of heavy metals at most sites. However, the fine-grained and coarse sand on the southern coast of Murano accounts for a significant proportion of Fe, Mn, Zn, Cr, Ag, Ni and Pb. Most trace element concentrations found in soft tissue of mussels appear to be within recommended Italian and international guidelines for shellfish for human consumption, the only exception being relatively high As levels. The bioaccumulation of Ag and Cr is more pronounced in the shell of these organisms. In the marine water of the lagoon, trace elements are more enriched than in other areas of the Mediterranean, with particular reference to the dissolved labile species of Zn, Mn, As, Cu, Ni and Cr.  相似文献

Trace-metal distribution in tissues of the shrimp Pleoticus muelleri Bate from the Patagonian region, Argentina, was related to sex, size and physiological condition. Concentrations of cadmium, copper, manganese and zinc were determined in the digestive gland, male reproductive system and muscle of adult specimens. Significant (p<0.01) sex-dependent differences in mean metal concentrations (g g-1 wet wt) were found in the following tissues of males and females, respectively: digestive gland, Cu, 82.9 and 30.8; Zn, 32.5 and 44.9; reproductive system, Zn, 12.8 and 38.6; Mn, 1.7 and 3.1; Cd, 0.29 and 0.58. Metal levels of muscle showed no significant differences between sexes. Cadmium was not detected in muscle, suggesting that its incorporation into this tissue was strictly regulated. Metal concentrations in the male reproductive system were in general weakly correlated (0.001<p<0.05) with either body size or the concentration of metals in the digestive gland. The developing ovary incorporated substantial amounts of zinc, while cadmium and copper levels decreased at proportional rates (p<0.001). The patterns of the variations in the concentrations of these metals in the ovary strongly suggested that a regulatory mechanism operated throughout oogenesis. Manganese was not involved in this presumptive mechanism. The results of this study are discussed in terms of concentrations and in absolute amounts for standardized individuals.  相似文献

The acute and long-term effects of neurotransmitters dopamine (DA), serotonin (SE) and norepinephrine (NE) on the feeding rates of Mytilus edulis veliger larvae were investigated through concentration-response curves. Increasing DA concentrations increasingly inhibited food uptake. Acute exposure to high levels of DA caused long-term inhibitory effects on feeding rates (10–5 MDA) and growth rates (3x10–4 MDA). Feeding activity was also inversely related to NE concentration. SE concentrations between 10–8–3x10–7 M supported enhanced feeding rates. Neither NE nor SE showed long-term inhibitory effects on feeding at concentrations <10–4 M. These results were consistent with the observed effects of the different neurotransmitters on the swimming pattern of the larvae. The experimental evidence supports the model of ciliary control in adult mussels, involving dual innervation of the ciliated cells of the velum, with excitatory serotonergic and inhibitory dopaminergic fibers.  相似文献

One-year-old rope-grown blue mussels (Mytilus edulis L.) were held in experimental lantern nets and cross-transplanted between two sea lochs (Lochs Etive and Leven) on the west coast of Scotland. Growth and mortality were monitored from May 1991 to May 1992, as well as shell morphology in native and transplanted mussels. There were highly significant differences (P0.001) in growth rates between lochs; both native and transplanted mussels performed better in all shell and tissue growth-parameters in Loch Etive than in Loch Leven. Stock also had a significant (P0.05) influence on shell length and live weight, but its contribution to total variance was considerable only in the latter case. Wet and ash-free dry meat weights were governed mainly by site and to some extent by site x stock interaction. Mortality rates were quite low (6 to 7% yr-1) and did not show any significant variation either between sites or stocks. There were significant morphological differences (ratios of shell length, height and width) between the Loch Etive and Loch Leven populations (P0.001) which persisted for one year after transfer. Stock appeared to be the main factor affecting shell morphology, as opposed to site. Linear regressions of shell height and width on length were significantly different between the native stocks, but became indistinguishable from those of the recipient populations one year after reciprocal transfer. This did not, however, conceal the effect of stock origin on dimensional ratios. It is concluded that site differences related to environmental factors, notably chlorophyll a levels and currents, and also possible stress caused by high levels of Zn and Cu, are major determinants of growth, which are of main interest to aquaculture, while morphological differences most probably result from genotypic variation.  相似文献

Seven colonies of Lobophytum compactum Tixier-Durivault, 1956, which produce isolobophytolide as the major secondary metabolite, were selected from a fringing reef in the Pelorus Channel, Palm Island Group (18°34S; 146°29E), North Queensland, Australia. In September 1991, they were sectioned to afford two portions which were relocated to a grid, and a significant part of the parent colony which was left in place. The aim of the experiment was to determine the effect of relocation and contact with a toxic alga on the secondary metabolite content of a soft coral. A significant increase in the concentration of isolobophytolide was observed for all relocated colonies (n=14, p=0.001) compared to the non-relocated control colonies. This decreased after 2 mo, and was not significantly different from that of the non-relocated control colonies (n=14, p=0.881). After 1 mo, Plocamium hamatum J. Agardh plants were placed in direct contact with 50% of the relocated colonies. All soft-coral colonies in contact with the alga (n=7), showed tissue necrosis on the parts in direct contact with the alga after a further 2 wk. Tissues of the relocated control colonies (n=7), and those portions of treated colonies which were not in direct contact with the alga, were not affected. The parts of the colonies in contact with the alga showed a significant decrease in lipid content over time (n=7, p=0.001) and also a decrease in the concentration of the diterpene isolobophytolide (n=7, p=0.001). The effects of P. hamatum on the soft coral were essentially restricted to contract necrosis; chemical variations in the affected tissue were the outcomes of this necrosis. These results indicate that stress due to relocation is a more important factor in the variation of isolobophytolide levels in the soft coral L. compactum than is contact with the alga P. hamatum.  相似文献

Metals accumulated in the tissues of organisms inhabiting marine ecosystems generally reflect their bioavailable levels within that environment. The aim of this work was to study the presence and concentration of metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb and Zn) and its bioaccumulation in liver-ink sac (n?=?12) and muscle (n?=?12) tissues of loliginid squids, Loligo sanpaulensis, in liver (n?=?15) and muscle (n?=?15) tissues of white croakers, Micropogonias furnieri, and in muscle (n?=?12) tissues of franciscana dolphins, Pontoporia blainvillei, as representatives of different trophic levels of an estuarial ecosystem from the southern coast of Buenos Aires. Except for Pb, all metals were detectable in the hepatic tissues. Bioaccumulation was observed for Fe, Cr and Ni in muscle of squids. Zn levels in muscle samples increased with the trophic level of the species analysed. Necochea-Quequén presents relatively high levels of Ni and Cr in the tissue samples of squids and fishes given other locations of southern hemisphere, indicating a possible anthropic enrichment. These outcomes provide the necessary basis for the environmental monitoring of an area with relevance for fishing and high anthropic activity.  相似文献

Photoadaptation of photosynthesis in Gonyaulax polyedra   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Gonyaulax polyedra Stein exhibited a combination of photoadaptive strategies of photosynthesis when only a single environmental variable, the light intensity during growth, was altered. Which of several biochemical/physiological adjustments to the light environment were employed depended on the level of growth irradiance. The photoadaptive strategies employed over any small range of light levels appeared to be those best suited for optimizing photosynthetic performance and not photosynthetic capacity. (Photosynthetic performance, P i, is defined as the rate of photosynthesis occurring at the level of growth irradiance.) Among all photosynthetic parameters examined, only photosynthetic performance showed a consistent correspondence to growth rates of G. polyedra. Above 3500 to 4000 W cm-2, where photosynthetic performance was equal to photosynthetic capacity, cells were not considered light-limited in either photosynthesis or growth. At these higher light levels, photosynthetic perfomance, cell volume, growth rates and respiration rates remained maximal; photosynthetic pigment content varied only slightly, while the photosynthetic capacity of the cells declined. At intermediate light levels (3000 to 1500 W cm-2), photosynthesis, not growth, was light-limited, and photoadaptive strategies were induced which enhance absorption capabilities and energy transfer efficiencies of chlorophyll a to the reaction centers of G. polyedra. Photosynthetic capacity remained constant at about 280 mol O2 cm-3 h-1, while photosynthetic performance ranged from 100 to 130 mol O2 cm-3 h-1. Major increases in photosynthetic pigments, especially peridinin-chlorophyll a-proteins and an unidentified chlorophyll c component, accompanied photoadaptation to low irradiances. Maximal growth rates of 0.3 divisions day-1 were maintained, as were respiration rates of about-80 mol O2 cm-3 h-1 and cell volumes of about 5.4×10-8 cm-3 cell-1. Below about 1250 W cm-2, photosynthesis in G. polyedra was so light-limited that photosynthetic performance was unable to support maximal growth rates. Under these conditions, G. polyedra displayed photostress responses rather than photoadaptive strategies. Photostress was manifested as reduced cell volumes, slower growth, and drastic reductions in pigmentation, photosynthetic capacity, and rates of dark respiration.  相似文献
