Seasonal and spatial changes in seston, (POC), particulate organic carbon, (PON) particulate organic nitrogen and chlorophyll-a concentrations were studied on a monthly basis in a Mediterranean shallow coastal area (Stagnone di Marsala, Western Sicily) in order to gather information on factors controlling particulate organic matter distribution and composition. Seston concentration and composition were connected to the main physicochemical and biological driving factors, such as temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, wind-speed and biomass of submerged vegetation. the Stagnone di Marsala is characterized by high temperatures with strong seasonality (range: 11-28°C), while values ranged from 33 to 45 salinity. Total suspended organic matter concentrations (by ignition loss) ranged from 2 mg l-1 (in summer) to 12mgl-1 (in winter) and chlorophyll-a concentrations from 0.02 to 2 μgl-1. Despite a low POC/PON ratios (ranging from 5 to 11), the ratio of POC to chlorophyll (CHL-a) displayed very high values (annual average of 647). the data reported in this study, highlighting the oligotrophy of the Stagnone di Marsala area, indicate that the trophic state of the basin was controlled by different degrees of wind exposure (mean monthly wind velocity at exposed sites ranged between 4.2 and 6.7 m s-1) and by gradients in vegetation cover. These two factors induced clear changes in the concentration and composition of the suspended particles, but played a different role in exposed and sheltered areas. Exposed areas with limited vegetation were characterized by large resuspension processes and wide temperature and salinity fluctuations caused by wind induced turbulence. in these areas, autotrophic biomass (as chlorophyll-a), due to phytoplankton and/or re-suspended microphytobenthos, appeared to play an important  相似文献

Measurements of primary production and photosynthetic efficiency were carried out in the brackish lake “Etang de Berre” near Marseilles (France), which is diluted by the Durance River, and in the area of Carry-le-Rouet (Mediterranean Sea) about 25 km off the Rhône River outlet. Primary production (14C) estimations were made in Etang de Berre from December 1977 to November 1978. The carbon uptake rates ranged between 38 and 1 091 mg C m-3 d-1, with an average surface value of 256 mg; water-column carbon-uptake rates ranged between 240 and 2 310 mg C m-2 d-1, with an average of 810, representing 290 g C m-2 per year and 45 000 tons per year of photosynthetized carbon for the whole lake. Gross photosynthetic production measured by the method of Ryther was studied over a 2 yr period. The values obtained from marine water (Carry-le-Rouet) ranged from 23 to 2 337 mg C m-2 d-1, with a weighted average of 319, representing about 110 g C m-2 per year. The values in brackish water (Etang de Berre) ranged from 14 to 1 778 mg C m-2 d-1, with a weighted average of 682, representing 250 g C m-2 per year and 38 400 tons per year of photosynthesized carbon for the whole lake. The values derived from both methods of primary production measurements are approximately similar. Net production (computed from biomass estimations by Utermöhl's method) was compared with gross photosynthetic production. The net production in marine water did not display significant variations: most values were usually near zero. On the other hand, net production in brackish water exhibited a number of clear variations compared with concentrations of gross photosynthetic production during the whole 2 yr period. This large difference between estimations of gross and net production may be due to grazing, which is high in Etang de Berre, but slower and more constant in seawater. The ratios of primary production: chlorophyll a and gross photosynthetic production: biomass were also studied. In Etang de Berre, the former ratio ranges between 0.57 and 3.75, with an average of 1.44; this is similar to previously reported values. The ratio gross production: biomass in Etang de Berre varies between 0.3 and 4.2, with an average of 1.27, also confirming previous data. The very high values calculated for marine waters in the present study may result from an under-estimation of biomass.  相似文献

Zooplankton represents a key contributor to the ocean biological pump through its consumption of sinking and suspended carbon. A specific and highly sensitive method to evaluate zooplankton carbon requirement from the sinking flux is through the estimation of the activity of the electron transport system. The present study was carried out from samplings in 2006, and it was focused on the spatial 200–0?m zooplankton carbon demand across 24 sampling stations, along the Mediterranean Sea, from the island of Crete to the Strait of Gibraltar. Its potential day/night variability was evaluated. The zooplankton composition, abundance and biomass were investigated. The carbon demand per unit zooplankton biomass indicates geographical and diel differences among the sampling stations. A higher mean carbon demand was seen for the western Mediterranean with respect to the eastern Mediterranean, which can be justified through the observed ratio of gelatinous:crustacean taxa and the water temperatures recorded. Higher carbon demand was measured in samples collected during the dark hours. The relation to the presence and abundance of actively migrating euphausiids and copepods was discussed. A comparison with data from another of our study carried out in the same study area but in another seasonal period was done.  相似文献

The spatio-temporal variations in the megafauna (fishes, crustaceans, and other invertebrates) in three different habitats on the slope in the Western Mediterranean (Catalan coast off Barcelona) have been investigated. Samples were collected at two fixed stations during 1991 and 1992, one inside and one outside a submarine canyon (at depths between 450 and 600 m) and additional samples were collected at another station on the lower slope (at a depth of 1200 m) in each season of the year. Three replicates of each sample were taken at each station. Differences observed between habitats, seasons, and zoological groupings were verified statistically by factorial ANOVA. The habitat appeared to be the main factor responsible for the differences observed in biomass and abundance values for the zoological groupings considered. Decapod crustacean biomass was higher in the submarine canyon than in neighbouring zones, and smaller species and juveniles were more abundant inside the canyon in the case of both fishes and crustaceans. Fish biomass was most abundant in the lower slope. Seasonality was also a factor, although to a lesser extent. Seasonal variations in biomass, especially fish biomass, were recorded in the deepest zone (1200 m). Crustaceans displayed lower sensitivity to seasonal factors, whereas other invertebrates did not, on the whole, exhibit seasonal variations.  相似文献

According to previous findings, the study site displayed a strong oligotrophy. Chlorophyll-a accounted for a very low fraction of the total suspended matter pool (0.1%), whereas at least 75% of POC was of detrital/heterotrophic origin. POC: PON ratio values indicate that bacterioplankton biomass accounted for a significant fraction of the total POC pool, displaying values comparable to those of the phytoplankton biomass (phytoplankton to bacterial biomass ratio was about (1). Temporal and spatial changes in the biochemical composition of particulate organic matter were rather limited and related to its sources, the main of which is represented by detrital particles released by the Posidonia oceanica (L.) beds. the comparison between our results and those encountered in other coastal lagoons indicates that the low abundance of suspension-feeding organisms observed in the study area is related to the “quality depression” of particles due to the dilution of high quality compounds (i.e., biopolymeric carbon) in a largely inorganic matrix. This result leads us to conclude that, to reach the same amount of high quality particulate food, a suspension feeder mollusc in the Marsala lagoon would need to filter a sea water volume around 3 times higher than in other Mediterranean coastal lagoons.  相似文献

Population subdivision was examined in Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) through sequencing of the control region of the mitochondrial genome. A total of 178 samples from the spawning grounds in the Gulf of Mexico, Bahamas and Mediterranean Sea were analyzed. Among the samples from these locations were 36 electronically tagged bluefin tuna that were tagged in the North Atlantic and subsequently traveled to one of these known spawning grounds during the spawning season. Bluefin tuna populations from the Gulf of Mexico and the Mediterranean Sea were found to be genetically distinct based on Φst, and sequence nearest neighbor analyses, showing that these two major spawning areas support independent stocks. Sequence nearest neighbor analysis indicated significant population subdivision among the Gulf of Mexico, western Mediterranean and eastern Mediterranean Sea. However, it was not possible to find significant pairwise differences between any sampling areas when using all samples. If only samples that had a high likelihood of assignment to a specific spawning site were used (young of the year, spawning adults), the differentiation increased among all sampling areas and the Western Mediterranean Sea was distinct from the Eastern Mediterranean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico. It was not possible to distinguish samples from the Bahamas from those collected at any of the other sampling sites. These data support tagging results that suggested distinctness of the Gulf of Mexico, Eastern and Western Mediterranean Sea spawning areas. This level of stock differentiation is only possible if Atlantic bluefin tuna show strong natal homing to individual spawning grounds.  相似文献

通过现场采集辽东湾双台子河口翅碱蓬(Suaeda salsa)光谱数据,收集标准样方(1 m×1 m)的翅碱蓬生物量(Biomass),建立相关植被指数与翅碱蓬生物量的遥感反演回归算法,发现辽宁双台子河口湿地翅碱蓬生物量与植被指数PVI、SAVI和MSAVI的相关系数R2较高,直线回归方程相关系数分别达到0.626、0.698和0.679。同时,利用得到的估算模型,结合1990—2005年的双台子河口的TM影像数据,反演该区域翅碱蓬分布面积和生物量。结果发现:辽东湾双台子河口湿地翅碱蓬面积变化呈先降后升的趋势。通过植被指数(NDVI、RVI、PVI和MSAVI)和生物量的算法反演,发现翅碱蓬生物量曲线与分布面积曲线的变化趋势一致。  相似文献

A 4-year study (1972–1976) determined long-term trends of organochlorine residues (DDT, DDE, DDD, PCB's, mirex) and trawl-susceptible organisms in a shallow, river-dominated estuary in North Florida (Apalachicola Bay, USA). Moderate levels of such compounds were found in various species prior to the restricted use of DDT in 1972. A subsequent precipitous decline in organochlorine besidues was attributed to decreased upland usage, major flushing of the river basin in early 1973, and various factors associated with estuarine function. No mirex was found in sediments or aquatic organisms. Apparently, the half-life of organochlorines is relatively short in this bay system. Various statistical methods were used to test the relationships of different physico-chemical and biological parameters. During the 4-year study period, seasonal river flow fluctuations dominated water color, turbidity, salinity, nutrients (NO3), chlorophyll a, and the temporal succession of fishes in the bay. Certain long-term trends of fish associations were noted; relative dominance of key fish species declined and stabilized while bay-wide species richness and diversity increased with time. Qualitative changes in species representation determined the long-term pattern of community variability. This was consonant with a distinctive fish fauna during the first year of sampling. The bay anchovy Anchoa mitchilli was dominant during 9 of the first 12 monts of the project; this influenced the time-related changes in community indices. Temporally clustered fish associations reflected the importance of river flow in the estuarine environment. Direct correlation of fish distribution with the rapid disappearance of organochlorine compounds was complicated by aperiodic natural phenomena such as storms and river fluctuations. Population and community trends appeared consistent with other studies showing similar patterns of dominance of stress-resistant fish populations and related changes in community parameters. In this case, the relatively predictable annual succession of fish associations allowed an appraisal of key forcing functions. Due to the high level of seasonal and annual biological variability in this estuary, there were some problems in the application of linear statistical models to the data base. Although the long-term trend of relative species representation is useful as an index of stress, new techniques are needed to analyze extensive field data so that functions such as trophic interactions are included in the estimation of causal relationships. There are indications that such effects could be related to the impact of organochlorine compounds on estuarine systems.  相似文献

Construction and simulation of a model of Lake Conway, Florida, U.S.A., provided a framework for defining major characteristics of this ecosystem. The relationships that are formalized in this model comprise a set of hypotheses about the nature of a warm monomictic lake. The data that were used to parameterize the model came primarily from literature estimates, although approximations of biomass levels were available from associated research conducted on the lake.Submersed macrophytes are a major biomass component in Lake Conway; simulation suggested that their role in nutrient recycling overshadows their importance in the grazing food chain. Phytoplankton biomass and degree of fluctuation are considerably lower than are observed in most cool temperate lakes, although simulated respiration and herbivory rates are closer to temperate values than tropical values. Simulated epipelic algae biomass varies an order of magnitude during the year, and this group appears to be a significant part of the food chain. Simulated zooplankton consumption and turnover rates are very high, in part because of the relatively small biomass per individual. Simulation of the model suggests that slightly more carbon is processed through the grazing food chain in Lake Conway than through the detritus food chain.  相似文献

The study of the cycle of chaetognaths during 1967 was carried out using samples collected with a Juday-Bogorov net at 1 station in the entrance of the bay by vertical hauls (75 m-0 m). Among the 13 sorted categories of chaetognaths, the principal component analysis singles out 2 communities (made up from the abundant species) and 3 isolated species. The first 3 components carry 71.1% of the total variance. An attempt to identify components, using partial correlations, shows that the first component is a trophic relation, the second the vertical stability of the water, the third a factor of development of young stages. The correlation between the physical and biological factors and the components account for 45% of the total information.  相似文献

Variations in number and biomass of benthic bacteria were examined in the surface sediments of a Mediterranean seagrass bed [Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile] in the Gulf of Marconi (northwestern Mediterranean Sea) from 1990 to 1991. The annual dynamics of benthic bacterial density and biomass were compared to changes in elemental (organic C and total N) and biochemical (lipids, proteins, carbohydrates) composition of sediment organic matter, as well as to microphytobenthic biomass, dissolved inorganic nutrients and ATP. Bacterial densities exhibited marked seasonal variations (5.12 to 322.7x108 cells g-1 sediment dry wt) with highest values in late spring. Bacterial standing stocks (15.8 to 882.33 g C g-1 of sediment dry wt) were high. Bacterial biomass did not correlate with organic C, total N or to specific biochemical components, but correlated significantly with chlorophyll a, ATP and porewater phosphate concentrations. There is evidence that benthic bacteria were responding to variations of algal biomass. Bacterial biomass accounted, on average, for 30% of total living carbon (calculated on the basis of the ATP concentrations) and 8.4% of total organic carbon.  相似文献

An investigation was conducted to examine the species composition, abundance and biomass of benthic macrofaunal invertebrates in Oppa Bay, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, in August 1984. Among 212 species identified, nearly half (105) were Polychaetes. Usually five species, Ampharete sp. 1, Neosabellides sp. 1, Nephtys polybranchia, Chaetozone sp. 1, and Lumbrineris longifolia were numerically dominant. The faunal features of dominant species were clearly divided into two areas using two indicator species, Amphalete sp. 1 and Neosabellides sp. 1. The former species decreased in numbers in the area from the river to the bay mouth, while the latter increased. Sediments consisted of sand at the river mouth and in the northern bay; and of silt-clay in the central bay, bay mouth and southern part of the bay. Gradients of species diversity (H) were expressed as a function of distance by linear regression. The relationship was positive (r=0.812) from the river to the bay mouth accompanied by increasing depth; and negative (r=-0.906) from northern to southern parts of the bay in proportion to the increase of silt-clay in sediments.  相似文献

The biomass and composition of algal communities in sea ice were studied during two summer expeditions to the central Arctic Ocean and the Greenland Sea. Based on algal pigment determination and cell counts, high biomass accumulations were found at the surface, in the interior and in the bottom layer of the ice floes. Pennate diatoms dominated in the bottom layer, while phototrophic flagellates and cysts of unknown origin were the most abundant taxa in the upper parts. The lowermost 20 to 40 cm contained between 4 and 62% of the entire algal biomass. Consequently, ice biological studies, which deal only with the bottom few centimetres of the ice floes, will underestimate algal biomass and production by factors of up to 25. Differences between the results of this study and published data from coastal locations point towards different biological regimes in Arctic sea ice. The algal biomass in coastal ice is about two orders of magnitude higher and composed mainly of diatoms, probably supported by nutrient influx from the water column. In the pack ice of the central Arctic, nutrient supply is probably reduced, and flagellates contribute substantially to total algal biomass. Coupled three-dimensional hydrodynamic and ecological numerical simulations were used to investigate the role of transport, stagnation zones and dispersion on inter-annual blooms of the diatom Aulacoseira sp. in the vicinity of the drinking water intakes of the Buenos Aires city (Argentina) in the upper Río de la Plata. Three different summer events were analyzed. First, a mild biomass bloom year (2006–2007), second, a high biomass bloom year (2007–2008) and third, a “normal” no bloom year (2009–2010). Simulated water height, water temperature, suspended solids and chlorophyll \(a\) concentrations patterns compared well with field data. Results revealed that the advection of phytoplankton cells via inflows to the Río de la Plata triggered Aulacoseira sp. blooms in the domain. In addition, excessive growth observed near the drinking water intakes, along the Argentinean margin, were associated with long retention times (stagnant region) and weak horizontal dispersion. Increased concentrations of suspended solids in the water column, in response to re-suspension events, did not prevent the blooms, however, were found to also play a key role in controlling the rate of phytoplankton growth. Finally, a non-dimensional parameter, R, that considers phytoplankton patch size, e-folding growth and dispersion time scales is shown to determine the potential bloom occurrences, as well as bloom intensity; R values higher than 5.7 suggest intense phytoplankton growth. For the mild biomass bloom year, \(R = 7.5\) , for the high biomass bloom year, \(R = 11\) and for the “normal” no bloom year \(R= 0.4\) .  相似文献

Juvenile sardine, Sardina pilchardus Walbaum, 1792, were collected off Mallorca, Balearic Islands, during April–July 1989, and were aged by means of daily otolith increments. Growth rates were in the range of values reported for other clupeoids, although lower than those for larvae of the Mediterranean anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus. Hatching dates were back-calculated from the age in days and the date of capture. The data indicated that hatching was continuous, but revealed a low peak in the last half of November 1988 and a second, higher peak in the first half of March of the following year, in accordance with the general cycle of secondary production in this oligotrophic area.  相似文献

1999年对固城湖渔业生物资源进行了周年调查,结合1981年4月至1982年3月、1987年6月至1988年5月的2次调查资料,比较分析了固城湖生物资源的动态。研究结果表明,从1981年至1999年近20a间,固城湖浮游植物数量增加44.8倍,生物量增加40.6倍,生物多样性减少。浮游动物数量较20世纪80年代下降约50%,生物量高于80年代初期,低于80年代后期。底栖动物生物量下降,其中瓣鳃类、腹足类生物量下降明显,而寡毛类和摇蚊幼虫等数量与生物量增长显著。固城湖水生植物演替剧烈,水生植物群落结构发生了重大变化,已由苦草、轮叶黑藻群落演变为微齿眼子菜、菹草群落,渔业利用价值下降。每年大量水草腐烂沉积,使固城湖水质呈现不断下降趋势。指出加强对固城湖生物资源的调控和综合利用,是固城湖生态保护和建设的关键。  相似文献
