Otolith growth during metamorphosis and some aspects of the early life history of conger eel (Conger myriaster) were determined as indicated from microstructure in otoliths of the leptocephali collected from Cheonsu Bay, Korea during May and June 1988. The leptocephali occurred from early May to late June in the study area. Larvae collected in early May were in the late leptocephalus stage, and the proportion of the metamorphosing leptocephali increased over time. Otoliths in the late leptocephalus stage showed a translucent zone only. Although the fish did not feed and the body length diminished during metamorphosis, the otolith continued to grow and, consequently, the opaque zone was formed outside the translucent zone. The inner translucent zone can be considered a leptocephalus zone, and the outer opaque zone a metamorphic zone. Assuming that the growth increments were deposited daily from hatching, the conger eel can be considered to have hatched between September and February. The number of increments in the inner hyaline zone ranged from 124 to 239, and was assumed to represent the number of days from hatching to the onset of metamorphosis. The duration of metamorphosis was estimated as 51 to 75 d based on the number of increments in the opaque zone at the end of the metamorphic stage.  相似文献

In order to examine the early life-history characteristics of tropical eels, otolith microstructure and microchemistry were examined in leptocephali of Anguilla bicolor pacifica (27.6-54.1 mm TL, n=20) and A. marmorata (22.0-47.3 mm TL, n=8) collected during a cruise in the western Pacific. A. bicolor pacifica occurred between 10°N and 15°N in the west and between 5°S and 10°N farther to the east. A. marmorata also occurred in two different latitudinal ranges in the Northern (15-16°N) and Southern Hemispheres (3-15°S) of the western Pacific. The increment widths in the otoliths of these leptocephali increased between the hatch check (0 days) and about an age of 30 days in both species, and then gradually decreased toward the otolith edge. Otolith Sr:Ca ratios showed a gradual increase from the otolith center to the edge. The ages of A. bicolor pacifica and A. marmorata leptocephali ranged from 40 to 128 days and from 38 to 99 days, respectively. Growth rates of A. bicolor pacifica and A. marmorata leptocephali ranged from 0.33 to 0.71 mm day-1 and from 0.45 to 0.63 mm day-1, respectively. These leptocephali had estimated growth rates that were spread out throughout most of the reported range of growth rates of the leptocephali of the temperate species, the Japanese eel and the Atlantic eels. Differences in the spatial distribution in relation to current systems, and the age and size compositions of the leptocephali of A. bicolor pacifica and A. marmorata suggested different spawning locations for these two species.  相似文献

Our knowledge of the horizontal distribution of heavy metals in the open ocean with time and space is still very incomplete. Complementary to chemical water analyses suitable biological indicator species may be used to fill this gap. The pleuston organism Halobates micans was collected from 1966 to 1987 at 151 sampling stations of the tropical and subtropical Atlantic Ocean. The cadmium data from more than 1000 individuals analysed display a chemicaloceanographic meaningful distribution in surface waters and compare favourably to primary production values. Chemical analysis of individual plankton species offer a new tool for a better understanding of geochemical cycling of heavy metals in the ocean.  相似文献

The early life history of the American conger eel, Conger oceanicus, was studied using otolith microstructure and chemical composition in metamorphosing leptocephali collected from New Jersey estuarine waters. The age of leptocephali was estimated by counting daily growth increments. Age of early metamorphosing leptocephali at recruitment to the estuary ranged from 155 to 183 days, indicating that migration of conger eel leptocephali from their oceanic spawning ground to the estuary requires 5–6 months. Back-calculated hatching dates suggest that the spawning season lasted 3 months, from late October to mid-December. However, in the late metamorphic leptocephali, the presence of an unclear peripheral zone in the otolith prevents the accurate estimation of the larval stage duration. The calcium content was almost constant throughout the otoliths. Both strontium and Sr:Ca ratios increased with age, but dramatically decreased at age 70–120 days. The otolith increment width also showed a marked increase at the same ages, indicating the onset of metamorphosis. A negative correlation between age at metamorphosis and otolith growth rate indicates that faster growing leptocephali arrive at the estuary earlier than slower growing ones. A close relationship was also found between age at recruitment and age at metamorphosis, suggesting that individuals that metamorphosed earlier were recruited to the estuary at a younger age. Comparison of cultured sporophytes and gametophytes in common-garden experiments confirmed the existence of ecotypic differences in light-related traits among populations ofLaminaria saccharina (L.) Lamour. Cultured sporophytes from the turbid habitat in Long Island Sound, New York, USA, grew faster under both limiting and saturating daily irradiances than sporophytes from shallow and deep habitats along the Atlantic coast of Maine. Rapid growth of turbid plants was attributable to several factors, including high photosynthetic capacity and efficiency [due to differences in photosynthetic unit (PSU) number and size], low respiration rates, and high surface area:weight ratios. In contrast to sporophytes, microscopic gametophytes from the three kelp populations grew at similar rates under limiting and saturating daily irradiances. Biomass-specific photosynthesis vs irradiance (PI) parameters were similar for gametophytes from the shallow, deep, and turbid sites, despite population differences in chlorophyll-specific PI parameters and PSU characteristics. However, turbid gametophytes produced microscopic sporophytes more rapidly than gametophytes from the shallow and deep sites, apparently due to a lower blue-light requirement for gametogenesis. Ecotypic differences in sporophytes and gametophytes ofL. saccharina from shallow, deep, and turbid habitats can be understood as phase-specific adaptations.  相似文献

The rate of sea-water ingestion in Japanese cultured eels, Anguilla japonica, adapted to sea-water for one week, was 89±9.5 ml/kg/day; approximately 75% of the ingested water was absorbed by the intestine. Similar rates of ingestion and absorption of water were also found with sea-water-adapted rainbow trout, Salmo gairdnerii, and two species of marine teleosts, Stephanolepis cirrhifer and Goniistius zonatus. When cultured eels were transferred from freshwater to sea-water the amount of ingested and absorbed water inoreased gradually to a maximum on the 5th day and then decreased to a constant level. The urine flow and glomerular filtration rate were found to be high in freshwater cultured eels, and both reduced markedly within 6 h after transferring the eel to sea-water. The reabsorption of water by the renal tubules was very small in both the freshwater and sea-water-adapted (6 h) eels. On the other hand, in the eels adapted to sea-water for 10 days the rate of urine flow was also very slight but the glomerular filtration rate recovered to that of the freshwater eels. Thus, water reabsorption by the tubules increased to a large degree. The results seem to indicate the existence of two distinct phases in the renal function during sea-water adaptation of cultured eels.  相似文献

When Japanese cultured eels, Anguilla japonica, were transferred from freshwater to sea-water, their body weight decreased by 15% on the second day and then recovered gradually to the original weight within a week. Serum sodium content increased by 58% on the second day, and thereafter decreased to a constant level. Isolated intestines from these eels were bathed on both sides, mucosal and serosal, by identical Ringer solution. The water and sodium transort was very active from mucosa to serosa in such isolated intestines of sea-water-adapted eels. This active movement was particularly dominant during the week after transferring the eel to seawater, and a peak was reached on the fifth day. The molar ratio of water to sodium in the fluid moving across the intestinal wall was higher in sea-water-adapted eels than in freshwater eels. The isolated intestines taken from silver eels during their catadromous migration, but still in the river, showed a larger amount of water transport and a higher molar ratio of water to sodium than intestines from yellow sedentary eels. These adaptive properties are a prerequisite for the marine life of the eel.  相似文献

In Florida, more than half of the state’s sandy beach coastlines are designated as critical erosion areas by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP 2008). At the same time, the economic contribution of coastal construction is being confounded by the fiscal peril facing Florida (Bird in Ann Geomorph 57:1–9, 1985, Pew Center on the States 2009, U.S BEA 2009). It is therefore an opportune time for an evaluation of coastal erosion policy response which specifically addresses coastal construction. Furthermore in Florida, an increasing coastal population requiring the provision of structural development necessitates an improved understanding of how legislative intent which avoids the cumulative impacts of development is translated through quantified policy response. This study characterizes how coastal development trends in Florida have responded to critical erosion designation. Using spatial and temporal analysis of coastal construction permitting data from 1987 to 2007, three coastal counties in northwest Florida were selected for this study. This selection was based on proximity to the designated ecologically sensitive Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve (ANERR). This study has indicated that clusters of development have not been reduced or redirected by critical erosion designation in certain areas of the study counties. Therefore this study has implications for the regulatory framework governing coastal development permitting in Florida, which is of timely relevance for sea-level rise adaptation.  相似文献

We estimated primary productivity and distributions of carbon in the phytoplankton, micro-zooplankton, and suspended and dissolved matter in various areas of the World Ocean to increase our information about the organic carbon cycle in the surface layer of the sea. Primary productivity ranged from about 0.1 gC m–2 day–1 in the Gulf of Mexico to 9 gC m–2 day–1 in nutrient-rich water off Peru. Phytoplankton carbon ranged from less than 10 g/l in the former to 750 g/l in the latter and in nutrient-rich water off southwest Africa. Micro-zooplankton carbon usually was less than 50 g/l in all waters, and was dominated by ciliates, copepodids, and copepod nauplii in all areas. Concentrations of particulate carbon ranged from 12 g/l off the east coast of South America to 850 g/l off southwest Africa. Concentrations of dissolved organic carbon varied between 0.5 and 1.5 mg/l in all areas except off Peru, where maximum values of 4.5 mg/l were observed. Turnover rates of carbon by small standing crops of micro-flagellates (1 to 5 longest dimension) and dinoflagellates in nutrient-poor waters were lower than those by large standing crops of diatoms and micro-flagellates in nutrient-rich waters. Concentrations of phytoplankton usually accounted for 20 to 55% and micro-zooplankton for 2 to 30% of the particulate carbon in the surface layer of the sea. Concentrations of dissolved organic carbon were not related to concentrations of particulate carbon in most waters except off Peru, where they appear to be directly related.  相似文献

Inhomogeneous vertical distributions of the cyanobacterial biomass are widely observed during the summer season in stratified lake ecosystems. Among these are surface maxima characterized by surface scum formation and deep or subsurface maxima also known as deep chlorophyll maxima (DCM). The former occurs at the epilimnion in eutrophic lakes, and are usually caused by colonial cyanobacteria such as Microcystis. On the other hand, the latter occurs at the metalimnion and the upper part of the hypolimnion near the thermocline in oligotrophic lakes, and are referred to filamentous cyanobacteria such as Oscillatoria. The aim of this paper is to present a simple mathematical model that can simultaneously describe these phenomena including the annual and diurnal variations, emphasizing the roles of buoyancy regulation, transparency of the lake and zooplankton feeding on cyanobacteria. According to our computer analyses, the increased buoyancy, the low clarity of the lake and the low rate of zooplankton feeding take significant roles in formation of surface maxima, while the reversal of these factors makes deep maxima predominant. Our two-component model with nutrients and cyanobacteria can distinguish between two phenomena by changing the parameters for these factors, without altering the model itself.  相似文献

Internal growth bands visible in cross-sections of the valves and hinge plates of Arctica islandica Linné are deposited annually, possibly in response to the reproductive cycle. Growth rate and longevity, inferred from the bands, are surprising: A. islandica grows very slowly and lives to an advanced age. Individuals with more than 90 bands are not uncommon; the maximum number of bands discovered so far is 149. On the basis of average size for Middle Atlantic Bight specimens, modal age is estimated to range from 65 to 105 years.  相似文献

Several aspects of buoyancy were studied in the normally pelagic eggs of the sciaenid fish Bairdiella icistia (Jordan and Gilbert). Spawning fish acclimated to a low salinity (15‰) produced larger, more buoyant eggs which had a higher water content than eggs produced by fish living in ordinary sea water (33‰ S). Eggs fertilized in lower salinities were larger and more buoyant than eggs fertilized in higher salinities. The salinity of the medium during the first 5 to 7 min after fertilization had a lasting effect on egg buoyancy, but subsequent transfer to a different salinity also influenced buoyancy. Although egg buoyancy in this species can be influenced by the ambient salinity both before and after spawning, the capacity for adjusting buoyancy is limited, and eggs spawned in salinities lower than 30‰ would probably sink.  相似文献

The frequencies of certain electrophoretic fractions of esterases, transferrins and haemoglobins in an American sample of eels (Anguilla rostrata Le Sueur) are compared to those in a sample from Iceland [A. anguilla (L.)]. A number of quantitative differences were established as well as 6 contrasts of a qualitative all-or-none type. Anthropogenic climate change constitutes a main challenge for the Wadden Sea. Accelerated sea level rise, increasing temperatures and changing wind climate may strongly alter present structures and functions of the ecosystem with negative consequences both for nature conservation and for coastal risk management. Being aware of these challenges, Schleswig-Holstein State Government decided to establish an integrated climate change adaptation strategy for the Schleswig-Holstein sector of the Wadden Sea. The strategy was adopted in June 2015. It aims at the long-term maintenance of present functions and structures as well as the integrity of the Wadden Sea ecosystem in a changing climate. The strategy was prepared by a project group consisting of representatives from State authorities as well as from nature conservation organisations and local institutions. First outcome of the strategy is that extra adaptation measures will not be necessary in the coming decades. However, pending on the future rate of sea level rise, shoreline erosion and sediment deficits in the Wadden Sea will increase and sooner or later drowning of tidal flats and terrestrial habitats like beaches, primary dunes and salt marshes will start. At the time when management measures to counteract the negative developments become expedient from a nature conservation viewpoint as well as for coastal risk management, adequate actions with minimized ecological interferences are possible. It is assumed that balancing the sediment deficits as the main adaptation measure may be implemented most efficiently by concentrating sediment suppletion at locations where natural forces organize redistribution in the Wadden Sea. Local technical coastal risk management measures like the strengthening of sea defences will, nevertheless, remain necessary as well.  相似文献

In this paper the flow and turbulent structures are investigated over the city of Tehran (an urban area located in a basin surrounded by high mountains in the north and east). A number of non-dimensional parameters are investigated in the frame work of Monin–Obukhov similarity theory (MOST) using a local scaling approach. These parameters include dimensionless wind gradient, normalized standard deviations of three components of wind and dimensionless momentum fluxes. The main purpose of this paper is to evaluate MOST in predicting the above parameters for the selected terrain at 15 and 105 m heights. The prevailing conditions are stable and relatively neutral, based on stability parameter using local Obukhov length. For this study, data of a PA1 SODAR with supplementary data of a 100-m tower with four 2D sonic anemometers and also a 2D sonic anemometer installed at 2 m height have been used. Our results confirm that the non-dimensional parameters could be collapsed in to the similarity expressions only at 105 m height (that lies in the inertial sub-layer) not at 15 m height (that belongs to the roughness sub-layer). It is important to note that the obtained empirical constants for all of the considered parameters show considerable differences with those reported by others for other surface types. This is attributed to the local effects for where that the topographic wave forcing may need special considerations. This robustly emphasizes the importance of MOST validation for urban area with topography as Tehran. Consequently, MOST has been successfully verified at 105 m for Tehran data set with new empirical constants.  相似文献

Living veligers of the Cassoidea have been observed to use a mantle appendage to form and resorb periostracum. Anatomical and histological examinations of a ranellid (Cymatium sp.) larva collected from the Red Sea in 1987 revealed the structure and location of the pallial appendage. The mantle edges of juvenile or adult species of the Cassoidea do not show a comparable specialization. It is demonstrated that cassoid larval conch characters are sufficient to prove the existence of a pallial appendage without anatomical confirmation. A mantle appendage is not known from teleplanic (long-living planktic) veligers of other gastropod superfamilies. In cases where the larval strategies of the latter are known they are totally different. Therefore it is suggested that the adaptation of cassoid larvae to pelagic life is unique among gastropods representing an autapomorphic character of the superfamily.  相似文献

Leptocephali of the widely distributed tropical marine eels of the genus Kaupichthys (family Chlopsidae) were collected around Sulawesi Island during a sampling survey in the Indonesian Seas in late September and early October 2002, and the otolith microstructure of 24 of the 59 specimens captured was examined to learn about the larval growth rates and spawning times of these small sized eels. Leptocephali ranging in size from 25 to 60 mm were collected in Makassar Strait and the Celebes Sea, but they were most abundant in the semi-enclosed Tomini Bay of northeast Sulawesi Island. The Kaupichthys leptocephali examined had 39–161 otolith growth increments. Their back-calculated hatching dates indicated that five age groups were present and each group appeared to have been spawned around the full moon of previous months. Average growth rate estimates of the first two age groups were 0.65 and 0.54 mm/day for the 27.4–30.4 and 37.6–45.6 mm age classes. The growth rates of the oldest three age groups (52.0–60.8 mm) appeared to have slowed down after they reached their approximate maximum size. An increase in increment widths at the outer margin of the otoliths of those larger than 53 mm suggested that the process of metamorphosis had begun even though there were few external morphological changes indicating metamorphosis. It is hypothesized that chlopsid leptocephali have an unusually short gut that may not need to move forward during early metamorphosis. The presence of four age classes in Tomini Bay suggests that the Togian Islands region may be productive habitats for Kaupichthys juveniles and adults.  相似文献

Five oceanographic cruises were organized in the Sardinian Sea and Channel in May 2000, March 2001, September 2001, May 2002, and November 2002 to study the characterization of the water masses, Atlantic Water (AW) and Winter Intermediate Water (WIW), and their mesoscale variability. In the Sardinian Channel, an Algerian anticyclonic Eddy (AE) was observed in May 2000, along the Tunisian coast. This induced a greater minimum salinity in a wider and deeper layer than in November 2002, when no AE was observed. Some WIW was observed below it; nevertheless, no link could be established between AEs and WIW occurrences. In the Sardinian Sea, two AEs were observed during spring 2000, and a further two during spring 2002. One AE strongly influenced shelf circulation, in contrast to the other three that were off the continental slope. In the same area, during the end of September 2001, a vertical salinity inversion occurred in the first 30-50 m of depth over the whole sampling field, and a W-NW wind induced a coastal upwelling over the western Sardinian coast (south of 41° N). This upwelling increased the salinity from ∼20 to 30 m below the surface to the surface and, thereby led to a lower salinity close to the coast than offshore. This was in contrast to a classical upwelling. Consequently, in the Sardinian Sea, the general circulation, mainly driven by AEs, can meet the coastal wind-driven circulation.  相似文献
