Multifunctional organic compounds are thought to constitute a major component of the organic matter found in atmospheric particles. Their partitioning into the organic matter depends on their structure, their chemical properties and the properties of the absorbing matrix. It was recently shown that octanol is a suitable surrogate for organic particles and the octanol–air partition coefficient (KOA) was suggested as a useful tool for estimating the partitioning of organic compounds into atmospheric particles that contain high organic mass fractions. In this paper, we present a new and simple technique for the determination of KOA using solid phase microextraction (SPME) relative to a known Henry's law constant. We apply the technique for the determination of KOA of β-, γ- and δ-C3–C5 hydroxy alkyl nitrates. The temperature dependence of KOA for some of the compounds is also measured. It is shown that the solubility constants of these compounds are higher in octanol than in water and that the solubility in octanol increases with the length of the hydrophobic chain and with increasing distance between the hydroxy and the nitrooxy groups. Partition coefficients between the gas and particulate phase (Kp) are calculated using the determined KOA values and their atmospheric implications are discussed.  相似文献

The gas/particle partitioning of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs) was measured at three sites for a year in order to monitor the variation of PCDD/Fs levels and describe their partitioning. The air concentrations of PCDD/Fs ranged from 71 to 1161 fg I-TEQ/m3 and large changes in these levels did not correlate with seasonal changes during this study. Different homolog patterns were observed in the gas/particle phase. High chlorinated dioxin/furans dominated the particle phase while low chlorinated dioxin/furans dominated the gas phase. The high correlation coefficient between log [(PCDD/Fsvap)(TSP)/(PCDD/Fspat)] and 1/T was observed in lower chlorinated dioxin/furans unlike in OCDD/F. The slope of homolog ranged from −0.410 to −1.025 and that of 2,3,7,8-substituted isomers ranged from −0.379 to −0.772 in plots of the log partition coefficient (Kp) versus the log subcooled vapor pressure (PL°).The octanol/air partition coefficient (Koa)-based model of PCDD/Fs is more compatible with experimental data than those of the Junge–Pankow model that tends to overestimate results, even though both models include some level of uncertainty. However, both models can underestimate the particle phase of PCDD/Fs, especially when the ambient air temperature is extremely low in winter.  相似文献

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin and dibenzofuran (PCDD/PCDF) were overall measured and compared in ambient air, water, soils, and sediments along the upper reaches of the Haihe River of North China, so as to evaluate their concentrations, profiles, and to understand the processes of gas–particle partitioning and air–water/soil exchange. The following results were obtained: (1) The average concentrations (toxic equivalents, TEQs) of 2,3,7,8-PCDD/PCDF in air, water, sediment, and soil samples were 4,855 fg/m3, 9.5 pg/L, 99.2 pg/g dry weight (dw), and 56.4 pg/g (203 fg TEQ/m3, 0.46 pg TEQ/L, 2.2 pg TEQ/g dw, and 1.3 pg TEQ/g, respectively), respectively. (2) Although OCDF, 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-HpCDF, OCDD, and 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-HpCDD were the dominant congeners among four environmental sinks, obvious discrepancies of these congener and homologue patterns of PCDD/PCDF were observed still. (3) Significant linear correlations for PCDD/PCDF were observed between the gas–particle partition coefficient (K p) and the subcooled liquid vapor pressure (P L 0) and octanol–air partition coefficient (K oa). (4) Fugacity fraction values of air–water exchange indicated that most of PCDD/PCDF homologues were dominated by net volatilization from water into air. The low-chlorinated PCDD/PCDF (tetra- to hexa-) presented a strong net volatilization from the soil into air, while high-chlorinated PCDD/PCDF (hepta- to octa-) were mainly close to equilibrium for air–soil exchange.  相似文献

Gas- and particle-phase polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) concentrations evaluated in the exhaust of 10 two-stroke, 50-cm3 mopeds belonging to three different levels of emission legislation (EURO-0, EURO-1 and EURO-2) were used to assess the prevalent mechanism driving the gas/particle partitioning of PAHs in moped exhaust. Sampling was performed on a dynamometer bench both during the “cold-start” and the “hot” phases of the ECE-47 driving cycle. Gas and particulate phase PAHs were collected on polyurethane foam (PUF) plugs and 47-mm Pallflex T60A20 filters, respectively, under isokinetic conditions by using sampling probes inserted into the dilution tunnel of a Constant Volume Sampling – Critical Flow Venturi (CVS–CFV) system. The results show that semi-volatile PAHs were predominantly partitioned to the particle phase. The soluble organic fraction (SOF) of the collected particulates ranged between 72 and 98%. Measured total suspended particulate matter normalized partition coefficients (Kp) were predicted within a factor of 3–5 by assuming absorption into the organic fraction according to a model developed by Harner and Bidleman [Harner, T., Bidleman, T.F., 1998. Octanol–air partition coefficient for describing particle/gas partitioning of aromatic compounds in urban air. Environmental Science & Technology 32, 1494–1502.]. This suggests that the gas/particle partitioning in moped exhaust is mainly driven by the high fraction of organic matter of the emitted particles and that absorption could be the main partitioning mechanism of PAHs.  相似文献

Interactions between volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and vinyl flooring (VF), a relatively homogenous, diffusion-controlled building material, were characterized. The sorption/desorption behavior of VF was investigated using single-component and binary systems of seven common VOCs ranging in molecular weight from n-butanol to n-pentadecane. The simultaneous sorption of VOCs and water vapor by VF was also investigated. Rapid determination of the material/air partition coefficient (K) and the material-phase diffusion coefficient (D) for each VOC was achieved by placing thin VF slabs in a dynamic microbalance and subjecting them to controlled sorption/desorption cycles. K and D are shown to be independent of concentration for all of the VOCs and water vapor. For the four alkane VOCs studied, K correlates well with vapor pressure and D correlates well with molecular weight, providing a means to estimate these parameters for other alkane VOCs. While the simultaneous sorption of a binary mixture of VOCs is non-competitive, the presence of water vapor increases the uptake of VOCs by VF. This approach can be applied to other diffusion-controlled materials and should facilitate the prediction of their source/sink behavior using physically-based models.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of salinity on the effectiveness of surfactants in the remediation of sediments contaminated with phenanthrene (PHE). This is an example of a more general application of surfactants in removing hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs) from contaminated soil/sediment in saline environments via in-situ enhanced sorption or ex-situ soil washing. Salinity effects on surfactant micelle formation and PHE partitioning into solution surfactant micelles and sorbed surfactant were investigated. The critical micelle concentration of surfactants decreased, and PHE partition between surfactant micelles and water increased with increasing salinity. Carbon-normalized partition coefficients (Kss) of PHE onto the sorbed cationic surfactant increased significantly with increasing salinity, which illustrates a more pronounced immobilization of PHE by cationic surfactant in a saline system. Reduction of PHE sorption by anionic surfactant was more pronounced in the saline system, indicating that the anionic surfactant has a higher soil washing effectiveness in saline systems.  相似文献

Gas- and particle-phase polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were collected at a tropical site in Southeast Asia over 12-h periods during November and December 2006 to determine their gas/particle distributions by analyzing integrated quartz filter and polyurethane foam samples. Gas/particle partitioning coefficients, Kp, were calculated, and their relationship with the subcooled liquid vapor pressure pLo for both PAHs and PCBs was investigated. The regressions of log Kp vs. log pLo for most of samples gave high correlations for both PAHs and PCBs and the slopes were statistically shallower than ?1, but they were relatively steeper than those obtained in temperate zones of the Northern Hemisphere. By comparison, the particle-bound fraction of low molecular weight (LMW) PAHs was underestimated by both Junge-Pankow adsorption and KOA (octanol–air partition coefficient) absorption models, while the predicted values agree relatively better with those observed ones for high molecular weight (HMW) PAHs. In addition, the adsorption onto the soot phase (elemental carbon) predicted accurately the gas/particle partitioning of PAHs, especially for LMW compounds. On the other hand, the KOA absorption model using the measured organic matter fraction (fOM) value fitted the PCB data much better than the adsorption model did, indicating the sorption of nonpolar compounds to aerosols might be dominated by absorption into organic matters in this area.

The diffusion coefficient, D, partition coefficient, K, and the initial volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in dry building materials, are the three key parameters used to predict the VOC emissions. D and K may be strongly affected by temperature. We have developed a new and simple method, the C-history method, to measure the diffusion coefficient, D and the partition coefficient, K of formaldehyde in dry building materials at temperatures of 18, 30, 40 and 50 °C. The measured variations of the diffusion coefficients and the partition coefficients with temperature for particle board, vinyl floor, medium- and high-density board are presented. A formula relating the partition coefficient and related factors is obtained through analysis. This formula can predict the partition coefficient in principle and provide an insight for fitting experimental data, and it agrees well with the experimental results.  相似文献

Ambient volatile organic compounds (VOCs) samples were collected at three locations, two in urban areas in Greater Cairo (Ramsis and Haram) and background one in rural area in Menofiya province (Kafr El-Akram), during the period of June, 2004–August, 2004. The highest concentrations of VOCs were found in Ramsis, whereas the lowest concentrations were detected in Kafr El-Akram, and the difference in mean concentrations were statistically significant (p<0.001). Among all of the measured VOCs species, the contribution of individual VOC to the total VOCs concentration were very similar in Ramsis and Haram locations, toluene was the most abundant compound followed by (m, p)-xylene. This similarity implies a similar emission sources of VOCs in both urban locations, vehicle exhausts are the dominant one. Greater Cairo has high levels of volatile aromatic hydrocarbons compared with many polluted cities in the world. The BTEX (benzene: toluene: ethylbenzene: xylenes) concentration ratios were (2.01:4.94:1:4.95), (2.03:4.91:1:4.87) and (2.31:2.98:1:2.59) in Ramsis, Haram and Kafr El-Akram, respectively. The average toluene/benzene (T/B), (m, p)-xylene/benzene ((m, p)-X/B) and o-xylene/benzene (o-X/B) concentration ratios were 2.45, 1.61and 0.85, respectively in Ramsis and 2.42, 1.61 and 0.78, respectively in Haram. The ratios in both urban locations were of the same magnitude and close to those obtained from automotive exhausts, indicating that the ambient BTEX originate mainly from motor vehicle emissions. However, the (T/B), ((m, p)-X/B) and (o-X/B) concentration ratios were 1.29, 0.71 and 0.41 in Kafr El-Akram, respectively. These ratios were lower than those found in Ramsis and Haram locations and in automotive exhaust, suggesting that the BTEX in Kafr El-Akram do not come from a local source and are exclusively results from the diffusion and dispersion of VOCs produced from the traffic density in the surrounding cities. Significant positive correlation coefficients (p<0.001) were found between the concentrations of BTEX compounds at the three sampling locations. The diurnal variation of VOCs concentrations in Ramsis location showed two daily peaks linked to traffic density.  相似文献

The gas-particle partitioning of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) was examined (i) by re-interpreting results from controlled field experiments and (ii) in diurnal samples taken in the New Jersey (NJ), New York (NY) City region. In the controlled field experiments, aerosol-laden filters were exposed to elevated concentrations of PCDD/Fs. Gas-particle partitioning coefficients, Kp's, were significantly correlated with octanol–air partitioning coefficients, Koa's. The regression of all individual datapoints resulted in the following best fit (r2=0.74, n=87): log Kp,meas=1.00(±0.13) log(10−12fomKoa/ρoct)−0.15(±0.48). We interpret this as showing that the ability of organic matter (OM) to absorb PCDD/Fs is generally well described by the octanol–air partitioning model (fomKoa). At the NJ land-based sites, samples were taken and analyzed for organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC), gaseous and particulate PCDD/Fs. Kp's were significantly correlated with the fomKoa approach. Adsorption to the filter and possibly to black carbon (BC), which was estimated based on EC measurements, could have contributed to the observed Kp values. Gas-particle predictions based on BC adsorption and OM absorption, with Kp=fomKoa/(1012ρoct)+fBCKBC–air/(1012ρBC) resulted in Kp predictions that were close to measured values. Adsorption to the filter might have been the major reason for elevated Kp's: The one NJ site with highest Kp's was most prone to the filter adsorption sampling artefact because of relatively low sampling volumes and concentrations of total suspended particulates. In addition, while adsorption to BC would result in better prediction of Kp values, no influence of fBC or fBC/fom ratios was seen, suggesting that it was of lesser importance in our sample set.  相似文献

The mass transfer rates and equilibrium partitioning behaviour of 14 diverse organochlorine pesticides (OCP) between water and polyethylene (PE) passive samplers, cut from custom made PE sheets and commercial polyethylene plastic bags, were quantified. Overall mass transfer coefficients, kO, estimated PE membrane diffusion coefficients, DPE, and PE-water partitioning coefficients, KPE-water, are reported. In addition, the partitioning of three polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from water to PE is quantified and compared with literature values. KPE-water values agreed mostly within a factor of two for both passive samplers and also with literature values for the reference PAHs. As PE is expected to exhibit similar sorption behaviour to long-chain alkanes, PE-water partitioning coefficients were compared to hexadecane-water partitioning coefficients estimated with the SPARC online calculator, COSMOtherm and a polyparameter linear free energy relationship based on the Abraham approach. The best correlation for all compounds tested was with COSMOtherm estimated hexadecane-water partitioning coefficients.  相似文献

Samples of gas- and particle-phase polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were collected at three sampling stations (Xiaomai Island, Laohutan, and Zhangzi Island) in the north Yellow Sea, China during November 2008 and September 2009 to study their atmospheric transport potential and the gas/particle distributions. The composition of PAHs was dominated by gaseous compounds. The percentages of the particle-phase PAHs to the total concentrations were found to be higher during the heating period than the non-heating period. The ratios of naphthalene and acenaphthene to phenanthrene, chrysene and dibenzo(a,h)anthracene showed an increasing trend from Xiaomai Island to Zhangzi Island, which can be called as the local atmospheric distillation of PAHs. Gas/particle partitioning coefficients (K p) and their relationship with the sub-cooled liquid vapor pressures (pºL) of PAHs were investigated. The regressions of logK p versus logpºL gave significant correlations for all samples of the three sites with r 2 values in the range 0.56–0.66 (p?<?0.01). Both Junge–Pankow adsorption model and octanol–air partition coefficient absorption model tended to underestimate the sorption for most PAHs, but the absorption model appeared to be more suitable for predicting the particle fraction of PAHs than the Junge–Pankow model.  相似文献

Variability in gasoline-water partitioning of major aromatic constituents (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX)) and methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) were examined for regular and ethanol-blended gasolines. By use of a two-phase liquid-liquid equilibrium model, the distribution of nonpolar solutes between fuel phase and water was related to principles of equilibrium. The models derived using Raoult's law convention for activity coefficients and liquid solubility is presented. The observed inverse log-log linear dependence of Kfw values on aqueous solubility, could be well predicted by assuming gasoline to be an ideal solvent mixture. Oxygenated additives (i.e., ethanol and MTBE), in the low percent range (below 5%), were shown to have minimal or negligible cosolvent effects on hydrocarbon partitioning. In the case of high fuel-to-water ratio (e.g., 1:1) or near contaminant source zone, the cosolvent effect of oxygenated gasoline with high content of ethanol (e.g., E85) will be environmentally significant.  相似文献

The dispersion of VOCs emitted by a municipal solid waste landfill was studied for a period of over one year. Sixteen VOCs were monitored: linear alkanes from C7 to C11, BTEX, trimethylbenzene, trichlorethylene, tetrachlorethylene, α and β-pinenes, limonene. The analytical procedure was first comprised of static long-term sampling of about 2 months using radial diffusion Radiello tubes containing activated carbon, followed by extraction by solvent (i.e. CS2) and GC/MS analysis. The results were initially analysed on the basis of the total concentration of the quantified VOCs, then by examining the concentrations of certain selected compounds. The influence of different parameters such as operating conditions, meteorological conditions and site morphology was highlighted on the basis of total VOC concentrations. In order to study the VOC's dispersion more closely, 5 compounds were chosen: toluene, benzene, limonene, and the sum trichlorethylene + tetrachlorethylene, as a “marker”, to verify the origin of the VOCs emitted. The results showed that the main source of VOCs is the open cell and lead to different hypotheses on interferences from neighbouring sources and to the proposal of solutions to limit the emission of VOCs and their dispersion. To our knowledge, this type of study has not been accomplished until this day.  相似文献

Semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs) are a major class of indoor pollutants. Understanding SVOC partitioning between the gas phase and settled dust is important for characterizing the fate of these species indoors and the pathways by which humans are exposed to them. Such knowledge also helps in crafting measurement programs for epidemiological studies designed to probe potential associations between exposure to these compounds and adverse health effects. In this paper, we analyze published data from nineteen studies that cumulatively report measurements of dustborne and airborne SVOCs in more than a thousand buildings, mostly residences, in seven countries. In aggregate, measured median data are reported in these studies for 66 different SVOCs whose octanol-air partition coefficients (Koa) span more than five orders of magnitude. We use these data to test a simple equilibrium model for estimating the partitioning of an SVOC between the gas phase and settled dust indoors. The results demonstrate, in central tendency, that a compound’s octanol-air partition coefficient is a strong predictor of its abundance in settled dust relative to its gas phase concentration. Using median measured results for each SVOC in each study, dustborne mass fractions predicted using Koa and gas-phase concentrations correlate reasonably well with measured dustborne mass fractions (R2 = 0.76). Combined with theoretical understanding of SVOC partitioning kinetics, the empirical evidence also suggests that for SVOCs with high Koa values, the mass fraction in settled dust may not have sufficient time to equilibrate with the gas phase concentration.  相似文献

The hydrophobic parameter represented by the octanol/water partition coefficient (log P) is commonly used to predict the soil sorption coefficient (Koc). However, a simple non-linear relationship between log Koc and log P has not been reported in the literature. In the present paper, soil sorption data for 701 compounds was investigated. The results show that log Koc is linearly related to log P for compounds with log P in the range of 0.5-7.5 and non-linearly related to log P for the compounds in a wide range of log P. A non-linear model has been developed between log Koc and log P for a wide range of compounds in the training set. This model was validated in terms of average error (AE), average absolute error (AAE) and root-mean squared error (RMSE) by using an external test set with 107 compounds. Nearly the same predictive capacity was observed in comparison with existing models. However, this non-linear model is simple, and uses only one parameter. The best model developed in this paper is a non-linear model with six correction factors for six specific classes of compounds. This model can well predict log Koc for 701 diverse compounds with AAE = 0.37. The reasons for systemic deviations in these groups may be attributed to the difference of sorption mechanism for hydrophilic/polar compounds, low solubility for highly hydrophobic compounds, hydrolysis of esters in solution, volatilization for volatile compounds and highly experimental errors for compounds with extremely high or low sorption coefficients.  相似文献

Laboratory partitioning experiments were conducted to elucidate the sorption behaviour and partitioning of perfluoroalkyl compounds (PFCs). Three different sediment types were used and separately spiked with perfluorooctanoate (PFOA), perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctane sulfonamide (PFOSA) at low environmentally realistic concentrations. PFOA, PFOS and PFOSA were mainly distributed in the dissolved phase at low suspended solid concentrations, indicating their long-range transport potential in the marine environment. In all cases, the equilibrium isotherms were linear and the organic carbon normalised partition coefficients (KOC) decreased in the following order: PFOSA (log KOC = 4.1 ± 0.35 cm3 g−1) > PFOS (3.7 ± 0.56 cm3 g−1) > PFOA (2.4 ± 0.12 cm3 g−1). The level of organic content had a significant influence on the partitioning. For the sediment with negligible organic content the density of the sediment became the most important factor influencing the partitioning. Ultimately, data on the partitioning of PFCs between aqueous media and suspended solids are essential for modelling their transport and environmental fate.  相似文献

Decamethyl cyclopentasiloxane (D5) and decamethyl tetrasiloxane (MD2M) were injected into a smog chamber containing fine Arizona road dust particles (95% surface area <2.6 μM) and an urban smog atmosphere in the daytime. A photochemical reaction – gas–particle partitioning reaction scheme, was implemented to simulate the formation and gas–particle partitioning of hydroxyl oxidation products of D5 and MD2M. This scheme incorporated the reactions of D5 and MD2M into an existing urban smog chemical mechanism carbon bond IV and partitioned the products between gas and particle phase by treating gas–particle partitioning as a kinetic process and specifying an uptake and off-gassing rate. A photochemical model PKSS was used to simulate this set of reactions. A Langmuirian partitioning model was used to convert the measured and estimated mass-based partitioning coefficients (KP) to a molar or volume-based form. The model simulations indicated that >99% of all product silanol formed in the gas-phase partition immediately to particle phase and the experimental data agreed with model predictions. One product, D4TOH was observed and confirmed for the D5 reaction and this system was modeled successfully. Experimental data was inadequate for MD2M reaction products and it is likely that more than one product formed. The model set up a framework into which more reaction and partitioning steps can be easily added.  相似文献
