Background
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides are common environmental contaminants that have been associated with human health problems. Objectives
To assess serum concentrations of several organochlorine contaminants in general population living in a city with an ancient agricultural tradition and to identify possible exposure sources in Sicily. Methods
A cross-sectional study was conducted on 101 individuals. Each participant answered a face-to-face questionnaire submitted by well-trained personnel and provided a serum sample which was analyzed for the concentrations of PCBs, HCB, HCHs and DDTs by using gas-chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. Results
HCB, p,p′-DDE, PCB 138, PCB 153 and PCB 180 were detected in more than 80% of the study participants. The ng g−1 lipid median concentrations were: 18.6 for HCB; 175.1 for p,p′-DDE; 22. for PCB 138; 32.5 for PCB 153 and 23.0 for PCB 180. PCB 153 and PCB 138, PCB 138 and PCB 180, PCB 153 and PCB 180, and p,p′-DDE and HCB showed a high correlation each other (p < 0.05). HCB and p,p′-DDE concentrations were significantly higher in subjects >49 years old (adj-p = 0.03 in 50-69 years old and adj-p < 0.001 in >69 years old, respectively) whereas PCB 138, PCB 153 and PCB 180 concentrations were higher in males (adj-p = 0.03), in subjects >69 years old (adj-p = 0.04) and in current smokers (adj-p = 0.04).Conclusions
The present study shows that serum concentrations of organochlorine compounds detected in subjects living in a small Sicilian city with ancient agricultural tradition are similar to those found in subjects living in urban areas of other countries. However, further investigations are needed to compare data from rural/urban areas in the same country, assessing correlations between serum concentrations of several chemical compounds and potential health effects in general population. 相似文献2.
Distribution characteristics of organochlorine pesticides in surface and vertical sediments from the Zha Long Wetland, China 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Liu G Li J Yin L Liu L Qi H Wu Y 《Environmental science and pollution research international》2011,19(7):2681-2689
Introduction
The Zha Long Wetland, the first water bird conservation area in China, lies on the northern bank of the Song Nen Plain with an area of 2,100 km2. In many areas of the Zha Long Wetland, water pollution has led to a decrease in the wetland??s ecological function, vegetation degradation, a decrease in the number of bird species, and the depletion of fish resources.Materials and methods
The sediments used in this study were collected from the surface sediment of seven sites and from different depths in three types of marshes in the Zha Long Wetland in northeast China in late October 2006. The levels and distribution patterns of 17 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs; ??-HCH, ??-HCH, ??-HCH, ??-HCH, p,p??-DDE, p,p??-DDD, p,p??-DDT, endosulfan I, endosulfan II, endosulfan sulfate, heptachlor, heptachlor epoxide, aldrin, dieldrin, endrin, endrin aldehyde, and methoxychlor) in surface sediments as well as hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) and 1,1,1-trichloro-2,2-bis(4-chlorophenyl)ethane (DDT) in vertical sediments were investigated. Results and discussion
The concentrations of HCHs, DDTs, endosulfans, heptachlors, aldrin, and methoxychlor in surface sediments ranged from 10.44 to 41.97 ng/g, nd (undetectable levels) to 211.88 ng/g, nd to 69.89 ng/g, nd to 28.10 ng/g, 9.81 to 623.83 ng/g, and from nd to 3.99 ng/g, respectively. The highest levels of OCPs were detected in Tangtugangzi at a total concentration of 727.72 ng/g, where the dominant compound was endrin at a concentration of 483.04 ng/g. In the vertical sediments, the HCHs and DDTs were in the ranges of nd?C136.00 and nd?C214.06 ng/g, respectively. Conclusions
Different distributions of HCHs, DDTs, and other OCPs indicated that they originated from different contamination sources. Composition analyses in surface sediments indicated recent OCP usage or discharge at some sample sites in the Zha Long Wetland. 相似文献3.
Probability of intellectual disability is associated with soil concentrations of arsenic and lead 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Background
The association between metals in water and soil and adverse child neurologic outcomes has focused on the singular effect of lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), and arsenic (As). This study describes the complex association between soil concentrations of As combined with Pb and the probability of intellectual disability (ID) in children. Methods
We used a retrospective cohort design with 3988 mother child pairs who were insured by Medicaid and lived during pregnancy and early childhood in South Carolina between 1/1/97 and 12/31/02. The children were followed until 6/1/08, using computerized service files, to identify the diagnosis of ID in medical records and verified by either school placement or disability service records. The soil was sampled using a uniform grid and analyzed for eight metals. The metal concentrations were interpolated using Bayesian Kriging to estimate concentration at individual residences. Results
The probability of ID increased for increasing concentrations of As and Pb in the soil. The Odds Ratio for ID, for one unit change in As was 1.130 (95% confidence interval 1.048-1.218) for Pb was 1.002 (95% confidence interval 1.000-1.004). We identified effect modification for the infants based on their birth weight for gestational age status and only infants who were normal size for their gestational age had increased probability of ID based on the As and Pb soil concentrations (OR for As at normal weight for gestational age = 1.151 (95% CI: 1.061-1.249) and OR for Pb at normal for gestational age = 1.002 (95% CI: 1.002-1.004)). For normal weight for gestational age children when As = 22 mg kg−1 and Pb = 200 mg kg−1 the risk for ID was 11% and when As = 22 mg kg−1and Pb = 400 mg kg−1 the probability of ID was 65%.Conclusion
The probability of ID is significantly associated with the interaction between Pb and As for normal weight for gestational age infants. 相似文献4.
Contamination of organochlorine pesticides in water and sediments from a waterbird-inhabited lake,East Central China 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Ying Hu Linxi Yuan Shihua Qi Hongxia Liu Xinli Xing 《Environmental science and pollution research international》2014,21(15):9376-9384
Seventeen organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were investigated in the water and sediments from a waterbird-inhabited lake (Yangchaihu Lake) to evaluate their current pollution levels and potential risks. The concentrations of total OCPs in water and sediments were 10.12–59.75 ng/l and 4.25–27.35 ng/g dry weight, respectively. Hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs) and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs) were the most abundant OCPs, while HCB and cyclodiene pesticides were detected with low levels. Levels of ∑OCPs (sum of 17 OCPs) at sites highly influenced by waterbirds were significantly higher than the sites with no significant waterbird populations (one-way ANOVA, P?0.05), suggesting that bird activities were one reason for concentration distribution of these pollutants. Compositional and source analyses of OCPs in water and sediments indicated that there might be fresh introduction of lindane and heptachlor. The partitions of most OCPs were not in equilibrium between water and sediments. The results of an ecological risk assessment showed that residue levels of DDTs in the studied area might pose adverse effects on ecosystems. 相似文献

Background and aim
Persistent organochlorine pollutants (POPs) have in epidemiological studies been associated with health hazards. The exposure window might be crucial and it is, accordingly, important to analyze exposure concentrations in samples collected at the window of interest. This makes the use of stored blood samples extremely interesting. However, small blood volumes from stored samples in biobanks means that the researchers in epidemiological studies most often have to select a limited number of biomarkers representing the POP exposure and abstain from analyses of lipid concentrations. This raises the question of the necessity of lipid adjustment. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the correlation between fresh weight and lipid adjusted concentrations. Methods
We included data from studies were we have used the PCB congener 2,2′,4,4′,5,5′-hexachlorobiphenyl (PCB-153) as a biomarker for POP exposure and where fresh weight as well as lipid adjusted PCB-153 concentrations are known (n = 1628). The variety of the cohort members in the different studies gave us the possibility to better understand how well these measures correlate. Results
When all individuals were included in the analyses a correlation coefficient of 0.95 between fresh weight and lipid adjusted serum concentrations was obtained. Restricting the analyses to specific subgroups (based on gender, fasting status, age and BMI) gave correlation coefficients between 0.85 and 0.97.Conclusions
This study does strongly support the use of samples from biobanks in epidemiological studies for analyzing PCBs, at least regarding PCB-153, even though it is not possible to lipid adjust the results. 相似文献6.

Background
One of the suggested health outcomes of PCB exposure is childhood asthma. Objectives
This study was conducted to find health relevant biomarkers providing the molecular epidemiological evidence for the positive relationship between exposure to PCBs and childhood asthma. Methods
Blood samples from fifteen asthmatic children as well as an equal number of non-asthmatic children (average 2 year old) were collected, and were analyzed for PCBs and their select marker expression by using qRT-PCR.Results
Among biomarkers examined IL-8 expression was significantly correlated to serum levels of PCB #163 + 164 (P = 0.022), #170 (P = 0.046), #177 (P = 0.022), #178 (P = 0.022) and #180 + 193 (P = 0.046) in a dose-dependent manner, which was found only among asthmatic children. In contrast, COX-2 correlations to individual congener levels were recognized only among control subjects, not among asthmatic subjects.Conclusion
Serum concentrations of PCB#163 + 164, #170, #177, #178 and #180 + 193 correlate significantly with IL-8 mRNA expressions among asthmatic children. 相似文献7.

Background
A total of 265 000 m3 of dioxin contaminated soil and sediments from past industrial activity was treated on site in an urban setting in Sydney, Australia. To respond to local community concerns about potential dioxin exposure from fugitive emissions a human biomonitoring study was undertaken. Objective
To determine whether local residents were exposed to significant amounts of dioxin from the remediation process. Methods: Blood samples were collected from local residents around the site and a representative metropolitan control group. They were pooled within age and sex strata and the change in dioxin concentrations over the remediation period and a summary of the mid point and post remediation dioxin concentrations were compared between groups. Information on dietary intake was collected to look for possible confounding. Results
The mean dioxin Toxic Equivalent concentrations (TeQ) decreased among both the local resident and control groups over the remediation period by 1.9 and 2.1 pg gm−1 lipid respectively. Modelled blood concentrations adjusting for age and sex did not detect a significant difference between groups for changes in either TeQ or 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (2,3,7,8 TCDD). The summary measure approach did however demonstrate that the 2,3,7,8 TCDD concentrations among the local resident group was approximately 0.7 pg g−1 lipid higher compared to the control group post remediation. There were no significant changes in dietary intake sources of dioxin. Conclusion
Biomonitoring demonstrated that local residents were not exposed to significant quantities of dioxin. Large scale remediation of dioxin contaminated land can be safely undertaken in an urban setting. 相似文献8.
Objectives
This is the first research study to compare among female, non-smoker workers: (a) the exposure to benzene, toluene and xylenes (BTXs) in urban air during work in the street (traffic policewomen, TP) vs. work in vehicles (police drivers, PD); (b) the exposure to BTXs in urban environments (in street and in car) vs. rural environments (roadwomen, RW); (c) the values of blood benzene, urinary trans, trans muconic acid (t,t-MA) and urinary S-phenylmercapturic acid (S-PMA) in urban areas (in street and in car) vs. rural areas. Methods
Passive personal samplings and data acquired using fixed monitoring stations located in different areas of the city were used to measure environmental and occupational exposure to BTXs during the work shift in 48 TP, 21 PD and 22 RW. In the same study subjects, blood benzene, t,t-MA and S-PMA were measured at the end of each work shift. Results
Personal exposure of urban workers to benzene seemed to be higher than the exposure measured by the fixed monitoring stations. Personal exposure to benzene and toluene was (a) similar among TP and PD and (b) higher among urban workers compared to rural workers. Personal exposure to xylenes was (a) higher in TP than in PD and (b) higher among urban workers compared to rural workers. Blood benzene, t,t-MA and S-PMA levels were similar among TP and PD, although the blood benzene level was significantly higher in urban workers compared to rural workers. In urban workers, airborne benzene and blood benzene levels were significantly correlated. Conclusions
Benzene is a human carcinogen, and BTXs are potential reproductive toxins at low dose exposures. Biological and environmental monitoring to assess exposure to BTXs represents a preliminary and necessary tool for the implementation of preventive measures for female subjects working in outdoor environments. 相似文献9.

Background, aim, and scope
Current knowledge on environmental impacts of industrial activities in Romania, particularly persistent organic pollutants (POPs), indicates that environmental standards of the European Union are not systematically met. In our study area, additional sources of POPs are agriculture and domestic wastes. Very scarce information is available upon environmental contaminations and effects. In the present study, we investigated the chemical pollution and their eventual impact on the ecosystem by measuring POPs and by using biological indicators of pollution.Materials and methods
The survey was carried out at six main sample sites along the Bahlui River. Sediments were chemically analysed for their content in polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs)—hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs) isomers and the dichlorodiphenyl trichloroethane (DDT) family. River water was biologically monitored at the level of phytoplankton and benthic invertebrates’ communities. Water samples from six locations have been analyzed for algal species composition and correspondence to various water quality indices. Biological samples have been taken from the same locations so as to calculate the macroinvertebrate indices. In the most polluted areas, as revealed by previous methods, toxicity was tested by exposing the green alga Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata and the cladoceran Daphnia magna to various dilutions of water sample. Results
Important concentrations of POPs were identified only in sediments at river mouths (sites S5 and S6). Along the year, the sum of PCB concentrations ranged between 3 and 10 ng/g dw (S5), and between 4 and 26 ng/g dw (S6). Concentration of HCHs ranged between 0.4 and 3 ng/g dw (both S5 and S6) with a higher contribution of the gamma-HCH (30–70%), followed by beta-HCH (20–50%). The beta-HCH isomer was found at lower concentrations or even not detected in outer city sites. DDTs were found at higher concentrations than HCHs and ranged between 0.18 and 4 ng/g dw (S5) and between 0.56 and 18 ng/g dw (S6). The parent compound, p,p′-DDT, could be detected only in low concentrations (up to 5 ng/g dw) and contributed with less than 30% to the sum of DDTs in sediment. The principal contributors of the ΣDDTs in sediment were p,p′-DDE, and p,p′-DDD. The o,p′-DDD and DDT isomers were minor contributors to the sum of DDT. PAHs were found at higher concentrations than DDTs and ranged between 6 and 36 ng/g dw (S5) and between 36 and 155 ng/g dw (S6). Fluoranthene was predominant (up to 40%), followed by phenantrene (up to 30%), naphthalene (up to 35%), and benzo-(g,h,i)-perylene (up to 23%). The saprobity index and the diatom index increased from springs to river mouth, indicating a decrease in the water quality, but within the limits of moderate pollution. The saprobity index varied between 1.99 at spring to 2.70 at mouth. The diatom index varied from 3.48 to 3.14. The species’ richness in phytoplankton has a less clear pattern along the river, but in general, it appears to be negatively influenced by pollution. At the level of biological consumer species, the analyses of the macroinvertebrates confirm the situation and the tendency shown with algae. In addition, the Shannon–Wiener index, the Pielou evenness index, and the McNaughton dominance index indicate a peculiar pattern: invertebrate communities appear to a have a more stable structure along the river, with visible shifts at springs and at river mouths. Water toxicity testing indicates low toxicity of river waters around the city of Iasi, with two notable exceptions: the point pollution at the domestic wastewater treatment discharge and at the old open-air deposit of domestic solid wastes. Another important result was that tested algae appeared to be more readily affected than tested cladoceran: EC50 (percent effluent) was 16 in algae and 28 in cladocerans. The slope of toxic effect was also much steeper in cladocerans (6) than in algae (1.8), which means that the toxic effect is more sudden on the tested invertebrates than on the tested algae.Discussion
Pollutant concentrations reported herein are lower or similar than those reported for the sediments by earlier studies (RIZA 2000; Dragan et al., Int J Environ Anal Chem 86:833–842, 2006). Ratios of individual PAH compounds indicate important pyrolytic inputs and suggest that PAHs in the area are derived from the combustion of fossil fuels. Biologically, the waters appear to be beta-mesosaprobic towards alpha-mesosaprobic according to the saprobic index classification and undergo moderate pollution according to the diatom index classification. Water quality decreases from springs to river mouths. Algal species richness index has a less clear pattern along the river. Water toxicity is low, but certain sources of point pollution require increased attention. Conclusions
The water quality is better than expected, probably because of the drop in pollution intensity following the collapse of local agricultural and industrial activity following the fall of communism in 1989. Nevertheless, further studies will be needed to confirm and refine our results. While this study draws no strident alarm, it appeals for high attention, particularly because the economic activity in the area is expected to increase.Recommendations and perspectives
Future close monitoring will be necessary for insuring compliance with the Water Framework Directive, and for refining standards and understanding of the local situation, but with relevance for the wider international community. On the basis of the situation described in the present study, we recommend that future studies dedicate specific efforts to point pollution and effluent toxicity, particularly around the city of Iasi. For a better understanding of pollution and its effects, we recommend pursuing the type of multidisciplinary investigations proposed by the present study: chemical, ecotoxicological, and ecological. We also recommend that new methods should be developed and/or refined, like the empirical determination of partitioning coefficients in water and soils, process-based toxicity methods in ecotoxicological assessments, searching for interactions between pollution, producers, and consumers in aquatic ecosystems. We also recommend preference for cheaper survey methods, as these will be more applicable locally.10.

Background
Although breastfeeding is the ideal way of nurturing infants, it can be a source of exposure to toxicants. This study reports the concentration of Hg, Pb and Cd in breast milk from a sample of women drawn from the general population of the Madrid Region, and explores the association between metal levels and socio-demographic factors, lifestyle habits, diet and environmental exposures, including tobacco smoke, exposure at home and occupational exposures. Methods
Breast milk was obtained from 100 women (20 mL) at around the third week postpartum. Pb, Cd and Hg levels were determined using Atomic Absorption Spectrometry. Metal levels were log-transformed due to non-normal distribution. Their association with the variables collected by questionnaire was assessed using linear regression models. Separate models were fitted for Hg, Pb and Cd, using univariate linear regression in a first step. Secondly, multivariate linear regression models were adjusted introducing potential confounders specific for each metal. Finally, a test for trend was performed in order to evaluate possible dose-response relationships between metal levels and changes in variables categories. Results
Geometric mean Hg, Pb and Cd content in milk were 0.53 μg L−1, 15.56 μg L−1, and 1.31 μg L−1, respectively. Decreases in Hg levels in older women and in those with a previous history of pregnancies and lactations suggested clearance of this metal over lifetime, though differences were not statistically significant, probably due to limited sample size. Lead concentrations increased with greater exposure to motor vehicle traffic and higher potato consumption. Increased Cd levels were associated with type of lactation and tended to increase with tobacco smoking. Conclusions
Surveillance for the presence of heavy metals in human milk is needed. Smoking and dietary habits are the main factors linked to heavy metal levels in breast milk. Our results reinforce the need to strengthen national food safety programs and to further promote avoidance of unhealthy behaviors such as smoking during pregnancy. 相似文献11.

Background, aim and scope
The breast milk has been recommended to carry out as a monitoring tool for effectiveness evaluation of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs). Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dichlorodiphenyltrichloro-ethane (DDT) and its metabolites (DDX), hexachlorbenzene (HCB) and isomers of hexachlocyklohexane (HCHs) have been monitored in the breast milk of nursing mothers in the Czech Republic since 1994 as a part of The Environmental Health Monitoring System. Knowledge about long-term POPs distribution and accumulation in the human body is crucial to understanding uptake, degradation and subsequent effects as well as to conduct risk assessments. The main aim of this study is to evaluate 15-years long-term trends of selected POPs in human milk in the Czech Republic and to elucidate the questionnaire information about the age, parity and social habits, to the final concentrations. This effectiveness evaluation of POPs restriction is quite precisely after 15-years monitoring campaigns.Materials, methods and results
The human milk samples (4,753 samples) were analysed for a number of chlorinated organic chemicals including PCBs and selected chlorinated pesticides (OCPs, HCB, HCHs, DDX). The relative change of concentration per year for all chemicals was analysed. The remaining percentages of POPs in breast milk in comparison to 1994 are also expressed. Czech population half-lives of POPs in breast milk, derived from either linear or exponential models were computed. Conclusions and perspectives
The long-term data indicates a continuation of a decreasing trend of POPs concentrations on breast milk. Our study did not confirm lactation and parity as an important outflux resulting in the decrease in concentrations in mothers, which is in the antagonism with most of the studies. The higher BMI was associated with higher amounts of HCB and lower amounts of higher chlorinated PCBs. The results confirm the effectiveness of restrictions of POPs usage in the Czech Republic. This ongoing long-term study is very useful tool for parametric effectiveness evaluation of Stockholm Convention. 相似文献12.

Goal, Scope and Background
Elevated concentrations of copper in the environment result in accumulation of the metal in plants and cause an increase in reactive oxidative species (ROS). The first response to elevated amounts of ROS is increased levels of enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants that reduce oxidative stress. The aim of our study was to evaluate the early stages of antioxidative responses to the low copper concentrations usually present in moderately polluted environments. In addition, some other parameters were examined to evaluate the effect of copper on plants. Methods
Duckweed (Lemna minor L.) was exposed to different concentrations of copper sulphate for up to 24 hours. Glutathione concentration and enzymatic activities of catalase, guaiacol peroxidase and glutathione reductase were measured spectrophotometrically. Additionally, delayed and prompt chlorophyll fluorescence was measured by luminometry and fluorometry, respectively. The accumulation of copper in plants exposed for 24 hours to various concentrations of copper sulphate was measured by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Results
The treatment of plants with copper sulphate resulted in an immediate decrease of the glutathione pool, which was replenished after 24 hours at CuSO4 concentrations lower than 2 μM. Higher CuSO4 concentrations caused a decrease of reduced glutathione. The responses of the antioxidant enzymes glutathione reductase, guaiacol peroxidase and catalase to CuSO4 differed during the first six hours of exposure, but their enzyme activities all increased after 24 hours of exposure. All these enzymes displayed biphasic activity curves with maximum values between 0.5 μM and 1 μM CuSO4. The response of guaiacol peroxidase was the most pronounced and statistically significantly specific and that of catalase the least. Delayed chlorophyll fluorescence decreased after exposure to 1 μM CuSO4, but no significant effect on maximum quantum yield of photosystem II (Fv/Fm) was observed. L. minor accumulated relatively high concentrations of copper. The accumulation rate was higher at lower concentrations of copper in the test medium (up to 2 μM CuSO4) than at concentrations above 2 μM CuSO4.Discussion
One of the most pronounced antioxidative responses to copper exposure was modified levels of oxidized and reduced forms of glutathione. The decrease of the glutathione pool is most probably coupled with induced production of phytochelatins. Antioxidative enzymes showed the biphasic enzyme activity characteristic of stress response. Guaiacol peroxidase exhibited the greatest significant increase of activity, even at higher CuSO4 concentrations at which the activity of catalase and glutathione reductase dropped. The intensity of delayed chlorophyll fluorescence decreased, indicating reduced photosynthesis of plants under stress. All the measured parameters showed that plants respond to even low copper concentrations very soon after exposure. The accumulation rate of copper in duckweed tissues indicates that L. minor is an accumulator species. Conclusions
The synchronized and prompt inducibility of antioxidants indicates their involvement in a general plant defence strategy for coping with metal-induced oxidative stress. Glutathione concentration and guaiacol peroxidase activity were found to be the most sensitive of the early indicators of exposure to copper concentrations present in polluted water bodies.Recommendation and Perspectives
The experimental design of the present study allowed us to compare the sensitivity of various methods and parameters for detecting plant responses to heavy metal-induced oxidative stress. The level of glutathione and the enzyme activities of guaiacol peroxidase and glutathione reductase could be used as a rapidly determined early warning system in toxicity studies.14.
Distribution and ecological risk assessment of organochlorine pesticides in surface sediments from the East Lake,China 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) are ubiquitous pollutants, and their presence in urban lakes is a concern for human and ecological health. Surface sediments in the East Lake, China, were collected in winter 2012 and summer 2013 to investigate concentrations, distribution patterns, possible sources, and potential ecological risks of OCPs in this area. The total concentrations of 14 OCPs ranged from 6.3 to 400 ng g?1 dry weight (dw) with an average concentration of 79 ng g?1 dw. The mean values of hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs) (α-, β-, γ-, and δ-HCH) and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs) (p,p’-DDE, p,p’-DDD, and p,p’-DDT) were 36 and 7.6 ng g?1 dw, accounting for 45 and 10 % of the total OCPs, respectively. The concentrations of OCPs in sediment samples collected in winter were significantly higher than those in summer, especially the HCHs, of which in winter were two times greater than summer. Composition analyses indicated that DDTs and endosulfan were mainly from historical contribution. Historical use of technical HCH and new input of lindane were probably the source of HCHs in the East Lake. Most sampling sites of HCHs and DDTs were found to have the potential ecological risk based on levels specified in the sediment quality standards. 相似文献

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were determined in 18 surface sediment samples collected from Bizerte lagoon, Tunisia. The total concentrations of ten PCBs (∑PCBs) and of four OCPs (∑OCPs) in the sediments from this area ranged from 0.8 to 14.6 ng g?1 dw (average value, 3.9 ng g?1 dw) and from 1.1 to 14.0 ng g?1 dw (average value, 3.3 ng g?1 dw), respectively. Among the OCPs, the range of concentrations of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane and its metabolites (DDTs) and hexachlorobenzene (HCB) were 0.3–11.5 ng g?1 dw (1.9 ng g?1 dw) and 0.6–2.5 ng g?1 dw (1.4 ng g?1 dw), respectively. Compositional analyses of the POPs indicated that PCB 153, 138 and 180 were the predominant congeners accounting for 60 % of the total PCBs. In addition, p,p′-DDT was found to be the dominant DDTs, demonstrating recent inputs in the environment. Compared with some other regions of the world, the Bizerte lagoon exhibited low levels of PCBs and moderate levels of HCB and DDTs. The high ratios ΣPCBs/ΣDDTs indicated predominant industrial versus agricultural activities in this area. According to the established guidelines for sediment quality, the risk of adverse biological effects from such levels of OCPs and PCBs, as recorded at most of the study sites, was insignificant. However, the higher concentrations in stations S1 and S3 could cause biological damage. 相似文献

Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were analyzed in 26 surface sediment samples from the Liaohe River basin, and the distributions of and potential environmental risks posed by OCPs in the basin were evaluated. Eighteen OCPs listed in the Stockholm Convention were determined using isotope-dilution gas chromatography–high resolution mass spectrometry. This is the first study of hexachlorobenzene (HCB) in the Liaohe River basin sediments. The total OCP concentrations were 0.39–68.06 ng g?1 dry weight. The total α-, β-, γ-, and δ-hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH), the total dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT – p,p′-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane (DDD), p,p′-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE), o,p'-DDT, and p,p′-DDT), and the HCB concentrations in the sediment samples were 0.1–28.48 ng g?1 (mean 4.01 ng g?1), 0.08–6.52 ng g?1 (mean 3.07 ng g?1), and 0.18–24.8 ng g?1 (mean 4.38 ng g?1), respectively. The HCB concentrations were higher than the concentrations of the other OCPs, and the HCHs and HCB together were the dominant OCPs. β-HCH was the most abundant HCH isomer. The concentrations of DDTs and other OCPs were relatively low, and the (DDE+DDD)/DDT ratios (>0.5) and DDD/DDE ratios (<1) indicated that no recent DDT inputs had occurred in the Liaohe River system. The main sources of HCHs were probably the historical production and agricultural use of HCH in the study area. The DDT and HCH concentrations were generally below or similar to the concentrations that have been found in other parts of the world. An ecotoxicological evaluation indicated that HCHs in surface sediments pose slight risks to human and ecological health in the Liaohe River basin. 相似文献

Concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were determined in two fish species, mullet (Mugil cephalus) and sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax), collected from Bizerte Lagoon and the Mediterranean Sea. In all samples, PCBs were found in higher concentrations than OCPs. The highest concentrations of OCPs and PCBs were found in sea bass, and in Bizerte Lagoon. Concentrations of DDTs and PCBs detected in this study were generally comparable or slightly higher than those found in studies from other Mediterranean and non-Mediterranean regions subject to a high anthropogenic impact. ∑PCBs, ∑HCHs and HCB levels were negatively correlated with lipid content, while no such correlation was seen for ∑DDTs. A significant correlation between levels and length and between levels and weight existed only for ∑PCBs. The daily intake of PCBs and OCPs ingested by people living in Bizerte through the studied fish species was estimated and compared with those observed in other areas. 相似文献

In the 1960s, the Baltic Sea was severely polluted by organic contaminants such as PCBs, HCHs, HCB, and DDTs. Elevated concentrations caused severe adverse effects in Baltic biota. Since then, these substances have been monitored temporally and spatially in Baltic biota, primarily in herring (Clupea harengus) and in guillemot (Uria aalge) egg, but also in cod (Gadus morhua), perch (Perca fluviatilis), eelpout (Zoarces viviparous), and blue mussel (Mytilus edulis). These chemicals were banned in Sweden in the late 1970s/early 1980s. Since the start of monitoring, overall significant decreases of about 70–90 % have been observed. However, concentrations are still higher in the Baltic Sea than in, for example, the North Sea. CB-118 and DDE exceed the suggested target concentrations (24 µg kg?1 lipid weight and 5 µg kg?1 wet weight, respectively) at certain sites in some of the monitored species, showing that concentrations may still be too high to protect the most sensitive organisms. 相似文献

Background, aim and scope
Australia is the largest producer of bauxite in the world, with an annual output of approximately 62 million metric dry tons in 2007. For every tonne of alumina, about 2 tonnes of highly alkaline and highly saline bauxite-processing residue are produced. In Western Australia, Alcoa World Alumina, Australia (Alcoa) produces approximately 15 MT of residue annually from its refineries (Kwinana, Pinjarra and Wagerup). The bauxite-processing residue sand (BRS) fraction represents the primary material for rehabilitating Alcoa’s residue disposal areas (RDAs). However, the inherently hostile characteristics (high alkalinity, high salinity and poor nutrient availability) of BRS pose severe limitations for establishing sustainable plant cover systems. Alcoa currently applies 2.7 t ha?1 of di-ammonium phosphate ((NH4)2HPO4; DAP)-based fertiliser as a part of rehabilitation of the outer residue sand embankments of its RDAs. Limited information on the behaviour of the dominant components of this inorganic fertiliser in highly alkaline BRS is currently available, despite the known effects of pH on ammonium (NH4) and phosphorus (P) behaviour. The aim of this study was to quantify the effects of pH on NH3 volatilisation and residual nitrogen (N) in BRS following DAP applications. Methods
The sponge-trapping and KCl-extraction method was used for determining NH3 volatilisation from surface-applied DAP in samples of BRS collected from each of Alcoa’s three Western Australia Refineries (Kwinana, Pinjarra, Wagerup) under various pH conditions (pH 4, 7, 9 and 11). Following cessation of volatilisation, the residual N was extracted from BRS using 2 M KCl and concentrations of NH 4 + –N and NO 3 ? –N were determined by flow injection analysis. Results
The quantities of NH3 volatilised increased dramatically as the pH increased from 4 to 11. Much of the N lost as NH3 (up to 95.2%) occurred within a short period (24 h to 7 days), particularly for the pH 9 and 11 treatments. Concentrations of residual NH 4 + –N recovered in DAP-treated BRS at the end of the experiment decreased with increasing pH. This finding was consistent with increasing loss of N via volatilisation as pH increased. The concentration of NO 3 ? –N was very low due to no nitrification in BRS.Discussion
The pH was a key driver for NH3 volatilisation from DAP-treated BRS and primarily controlled N dynamics in BRS. Results indicate that NH4 not adsorbed by BRS was highly susceptible to volatilisation. The likely lack of nitrifying bacteria did not allow conversion of ammonium to nitrate, thereby further exacerbating the potential for loss via volatilisationConclusions
It was demonstrated that the pH is the key factor controlling the loss of inorganic N from BRS. Although volatilisation was considerably lower at pH 4, achieving this pH reduction in the field is not possible at present. Findings from this study highlight the need to better understand which forms of N fertiliser are most suitable for use in highly alkaline BRS.Recommendation and perspectives
Although pH reduction is the most likely means of stopping NH3 volatilisation in BRS, it is economically and operationally unfeasible to add sufficient acidity for adequately lowering pH in the BRS for revegetation. More attention on forms of fertilisers more suitable to highly alkaline, microbially inert soil conditions appears to be warranted.20.
