The larvae of an egg-mass of Ophryotrocha labronica differentiate into 60 to 70% males and 15 to 40% females. In the coelom of males, freely floating spermatozoa are visible at a length of 10.5 segments. Oocytes of 5 to 7 m in diameter are released into the coelom of females at 10.7 segments. Males develop the k-jaw (k=complicated) much earlier (at 12.2 segments) than females (at 16.5 segments). As described for O. notoglandulata, O. labronica bears star-shaped glands on the dorsal side of the youngest segments. Males always have more glands (4.4) than females (2.7). These glands and the different appearance of the k-jaw may be considered as sexual characters. At 13.5 segments, 60 to 70% of the males start to proliferate oocytes, thus displaying protandry. The remaining males do not undergo sex reversal and are thus categorised as stable males. The developing oocytes in the so-called secondary females are not shed but ultimately resorbed. Resorption also occurs in isolated females, which display female differentiation from the beginning. The number of glands in secondary females decreases during sex reversal to values as low as those observed in stable females. Rearing experiments revealed the secondary females to be completely infertile. Inhibition of oocyte release in secondary females is permanent, and such release cannot be induced, even by the presence of males. Self-fertilization was not observed.

Intact young males of Ophryotrocha puerilis Clap. Mecz. which are about to reach the female phase are capable of producing oocytes even under conditions of fasting. Intact isolated females may change sex under fasting conditions; their oocytes are not shed but resorbed. Decerebrated males which are about to reach the female phase at the moment of decerebration are unable to develop oocytes. Decerebrated females begin earlier with the production of spermatozoa than females under fasting conditions. The oocytes of decapitated females are either resorbed (young females with oocytes ranging in diameter up to 60 μm), or shed in egg masses capable of development after fertilization (older females with oocytes of 90 μm diameter or more). The effect of decerebration on females is compensated completely by implantation of isolated prostomia from female donors. Decerebrated males with implanted isolated prostomia from female donors immediately start oocyte production; these oocytes are not shed. In the majority of cases, decerebrated females change to the male phase after implantation of prostomia isolated from male donors. The mutual influence of a pair depends on direct contact of the partners. In isolated females, anterior fragments, consisting of prostomia and some segments, may induce change of sex and shedding of oocytes. On the other hand, intact females may induce sex reversal in anterior fragments. Even isolated prostomia from female donors may induce change of sex in intact females. A possible influence of intact females upon isolated prostomia was not found. Intact females and decerebrated females with implanted prostomia from female donors exhibit no mutual influence when placed together.  相似文献

In the gonochoric polychaetous annelid Eunice siciliensis Grube, germ cells only develop in the posterior segments of the worm; these segments subsequently differentiate into an epitokous portion separating at maturity from the infertile body part. As in the Pacific and Atlantic palolo worms, the epitokous portions die some hours after spawning. Laboratory investigations revealed that the anterior parts of spawned worms survive and regenerate genital segments. After a period of at least 8 months, paired gonads are developed in these segments. Gonia proliferating later from the germinal tissue are released from gonadal sacs into the coelomal cavities, where gamete development occurs. A reproductive epitokous portion does not mature and separate until the second year of cultivation; it is followed by caudal regeneration. These facts and the observation that only about 50% of the individuals obtained from samples of coralligène were sexually differentiated, led to the conclusion that E. siciliensis probably has a bi-annual reproductive cycle. Caudal regeneration does not depend on the presence of a prostomia hormone. The ability to form posterior regenerates is inherent to the parapodial segments of all body regions, except for mature genital segments. This is also valid for the formation of morphologically different secondary prostomia. However, for initiation and further promotion of gametogenesis and epitokous development, at least one gonadotropic factor originating from the prostomium is required. Neurosecretory cells within the brain suggest this factor(s) to be of neuro-endocrine nature. Specimens developing secondary prostomia were found both under field and laboratory conditions. In several cases, sexual development took place, and even epitokous portions were separated from such individuals. From this it appears that the gonadotropic functions are re-established by the regenerated prostomia in order to ensure reproduction in individuals accidentally deprived of the anterior end. The possible rôle of temperature and light as environmental factors involved in the control of normal and regenerative growth, of sexual development and reproduction is discussed.  相似文献

This study was undertaken to further clarify whether the brown shrimp, Crangon crangon (Linnaeus 1758), is a gonochorist, a facultative or an obligate hermaphrodite. Juvenile shrimps were sampled from intertidal habitats along the German Wadden Sea coast with a push net and from a power plant water inlet to quantify the share of primary females. Length-based sex ratios were determined for about 27,000 individuals using external characteristics. Observed sex ratios were mainly female-biased, and also large males occurred regularly in the catch. This indicates that sex at hatch is not male as would be characteristic for an obligate protandric hermaphrodite and that not all male shrimps change sex. A cohort-based computer simulation, including sex-specific growth rates, mortality and seasonally varying recruitment, generated sex ratios comparable to the field. The observed decline in the proportion of males with increasing size can be explained solely by faster growth of females without involving hermaphroditism. Based on temperature-dependent growth and moult rates as well as length-specific numbers of eggs per female, the potential egg production of primary and secondary females was modelled, yielding contributions of secondary females of <1%. Sex change in C. crangon has previously been observed and may be interpreted as an evolutionary relict of this species having evolved in a habitat characterized by lower population densities, lower predation levels and increased longevity compared to today’s living conditions in North Sea coastal waters.  相似文献

Selection should favor strategies that reduce costs associated with spermatogenesis. This is especially true when males are sympatric with closely related species, and must avoid heterospecific matings, as in the unisexual–bisexual species complex of mollies. Male sailfin mollies, Poecilia latipinna, are sexually parasitized by Amazon mollies (P. formosa), and produce more sperm in the presence of female sailfin mollies than in the presence of Amazon mollies. We tested the hypothesis that male sailfin mollies differentially expend sperm when mating with either conspecific or heterospecific females. We measured sperm expenditure by determining the amount of sperm males have remaining after mating. Male sailfin mollies had more sperm available after mating with female sailfin mollies than after mating with Amazon mollies. While this result could indicate higher sperm expenditure to Amazon mollies, males mating with female sailfin mollies had more sperm available after mating than their baseline sperm reserves. Spermiation, the last stage of spermatogenesis, could be triggered by physical contact with females, and could increase sperm availability during mating. We examined the relationship between sperm availability and the amount of time that males mated with females. We found that sperm availability increased as mating trial time increased with female sailfin mollies, but not with Amazon mollies. Spermiation in the presence of conspecific female stimuli could reduce physiological costs associated with spermatogenesis while increasing the amount and quality of sperm available for sperm competition. We suggest that future studies examining sperm priming and expenditure should consider the potential for spermiation.  相似文献

Sexual systems vary considerably among caridean shrimps and while most species are gonochoric, others are described as sequential protandric hermaphrodites or simultaneous hermaphrodites with an early male phase. At present, there is confusion about the sexual system exhibited by several species mostly because those studies attempting to reveal their sexual system draw inferences solely from the distribution of the sexes across size classes. Here we investigated the sexual system of the shrimp Hippolyte williamsi from Chile to determine if the species is protandric or gonochoric with sexual dimorphism (males smaller than females). Morphological identification and size frequency distributions indicated that the population comprised small males, small immature females, and large mature females, which was confirmed by dissections. No transitional individuals were found. Males maintained in the laboratory molted 1–8 times, and many grew up to reach sizes observed in only a small fraction of males in the field. No indication of sex change was recorded. Our results indicate that H. williamsi is a sexually dimorphic gonochoric species and emphasizes the importance of using several kinds of evidence (size measurements, growth experiments, morphological dissections, and histological studies) to reveal the sexual system of Hippolyte species. Whether the observed size dimorphism between males and females in many species of Hippolyte is expression of contrasting sexual and natural selection, and whether divergent sexual fitness functions can contribute to the evolution of hermaphroditism remains to be revealed in future studies.  相似文献

Reproduction and development of the ophiuroidOphionereis olivacea H. L. Clark, a species that broods its young, were investigated in Florida from January through December 1985 and in Belize in June 1985 and April 1986.O. olivacea has a maximum disc diameter of 5.2 mm and is a protandric hermaphrodite. Sex reversal occurs at disc diameters ranging between 2.2 and 4.0 mm; it has 400 µm diameter oocytes and is ovoviviparous. As expected from an obligate out-crosser, this ophiuroid has a similar allocation to male and female reproduction, in terms of gonad volume. Reproduction of the Florida population was monitored for one year.O. olivacea is a sequential brooder and incubates its young during the coldest months of the year. The females produce a single clutch of juveniles each year. Spawning starts in November and peaks in January and February. The ova are spawned synchronously from all the ovaries of each female into the bursae and are retained there. Fertilization is accomplished by intake of sperm into the female bursae.O. olivacea develops through a ciliated embryonic stage that appears to be a modified vitellaria larva lacking ciliary bands. These modified larvae swim in seawater in the bursae. Direct development in this species has resulted from heterochrony in the loss of ophiopluteus features. The number of brooding females in the population increases in November and reaches a maximum in March. JuvenileO. olivacea emerge from the bursae at a disc diameter of 480 µm and each arm has three segments. Recruitment was first detected in April, and juveniles were particularly abundant in June. Small size inO. olivacea is associated with paedomorphic heterochrony with precocious maturation of the males at a disc diameter of 1.5 mm, ~2 mo after taking up their free existence. Brooding as a life history mode inO. olivacea is examined and the adaptations of this species to its warm-water habitats are discussed.  相似文献

Hippolyte inermis Leach 1915 is a protandric shrimp largely distributed in Posidonia oceanica meadows and other Mediterranean seagrasses. Previous studies demonstrated several physiological peculiarities, such as absence of female gonadic buds in adult males (the new female gonad is produced starting from few undifferentiated cells), the consequent absence of an ovotestis, 2 yearly periods of reproduction with different population structures (a spring outburst producing both males and primary females, and a fall reproduction producing mainly males), and a process of sex reversal influenced by the diatom food ingested. We performed several laboratory analyses to compare the effects of various species of benthic diatoms, in order to test the effect of different diatoms and provide information on the mechanism of action of the ingested compounds. In addition, we performed molecular tests (TUNEL) and TEM observations, to check the hypothesis that the effect of benthic diatoms may be mediated by a process of apoptosis acting on the male gonad. The results obtained allowed for a ranking of a series of benthic diatoms according to their effects on sex reversal, and a confirmation of the striking effect of Cocconeis sp. diatoms, which are able to trigger the appearance of primary females. We also demonstrated the presence of apoptosis both in the male gonad and in the androgenic glands of postlarvae. The effect is species specific, strictly localized to the male gonad and androgenic gland, and limited to a very short period of time, from the 5th to the 12th day of postlarval development.  相似文献

Selfish genetic elements (SGEs) that spread by manipulating spermatogenesis often have highly deleterious effects on males that carry them. Females that mate with male carriers of SGEs can also suffer significant costs: they receive fewer and poorer-quality sperm, their offspring will inherit the deleterious allele, and the sex ratio of their offspring will be biased towards the more common sex. To counter these costs, females are therefore expected to prefer to mate with males that do not carry sex ratio distorters or other deleterious selfish genetic elements. However, despite the potential costs, there are few examples of female choice against males carrying SGEs. We searched for evidence of a female preference in fruit fly Drosophila pseudoobscura against males carrying a costly meiotic driving X-chromosome Sex Ratio (SR). In a series of five non-competitive mate preference experiments, we find no evidence that females prefer to mate with non-SR males. Our use of five separate experiments, involving more than 800 females, makes it unlikely that this lack of a difference was due to low power or simple chance. We suggest that the lack of female choice against SGE-carrying males may be due to strong selection on SGEs to be indistinguishable from alternative alleles. Furthermore, polyandry, either in direct response to receiving an ejaculate from an SGE-carrying male or carried out indiscriminately when at risk of mating with carriers, may be an alternative response by females to limit the exposure of their offspring to SGEs.  相似文献

Summary In laboratory choice experiments, receptive female western mosquitofish Gambusia affinis affinis (deprived of contact with males 30 days) preferred the larger of two males. When two males differing in size were placed with a receptive female, the larger was generally able to monopolize access to her, but not when the female was not receptive. In other experiments, a single male was placed with a receptive or non-receptive female. These experiments showed size-correlated differences in male mating behavior. Smaller males were more likely to chase non-receptive females and attempt to inseminate them forcibly, while larger males continued to court females even if they were non-receptive. Even when the female was receptive, there was some evidence of size-correlated differences in levels of courtship and chasing.  相似文献

Summary Male sand lizards (Lacerta agilis) are polygynous and guard individual females for several hours to days after copulation. Even though the copulation itself only lasts 2–4 min, the total time that a male invests per female is considerably more and may constitute a substantial investment during a mating season. In such situations, when male copulation frequency is constrained, or when variation in female fecundity is high, mate choice by males may be adaptive. Large body size in female sand lizards is correlated with higher fecundity. In choice experiments performed in the laboratory, male sand lizards preferred to court large females rather than small females. In addition, when there was little difference in size between the females in the experiment, the males visited the two females more often before they started to court the preferred female. The results from a field study during 1984 and 1987–1990 showed that females are non-aggressive, have small neighboring home ranges (c. 100 m2) and may share burrows and sites for thermoregulation. This means that females can be found close together and thus gives males the opportunity to choose a mate. Assortative mating with respect to size was observed in a natural population, as well as a limited number of direct choices of females by males. The polygyny threshold model suggests that females make an optimal choice between mated and unmated males. However; in birds in which males provide parental care, the fitness of secondary females is often lower than expected from this model. This has been explained by the deception hypothesis, which states that males hide their mating status and deceive females into polygyny. Yet there is no direct evidence that secondary females are unaware of male mating status when they settle. Alternatively, females settle with mated males as a result of mate competition and costs of searching. We used videofilming at nestboxes defended by males to study mate sampling of female pied flycatchers Ficedula hypoleuca. The females visited on average only 2.74 males (range 1–8, n = 43). Most (16 of 19) of the polygynous matings occurred because females had only visited mated males, or the unmated males visited became occupied by competitors during the sampling period. Among females that could choose between both mated and unmated males, the majority (13 of 16) settled with unmated males. These results lend little support to the deception hypothesis but are consistent with the view that females are able to detect male mating status but sometimes settle with mated males because of cost of searching. Prospecting females seemed willing and able to suffer the cost of fighting with aggressive primary females in the males' secondary territory if no alternative mating options were available. In addition to male mating status, females took male quality (plumage colour, age) into account in mate choice but the former appeared to be the more important. Correspondence to: T. Summary. Ophrys flowers mimic the female produced sex pheromone of their pollinator species to attract males for pollination. The males try to copulate with the putative female and thereby pollinate the flower. Using electrophysiological and chemical analyses, floral volatiles released by O. iricolor as well as the female sex pheromone of its pollinator species, Andrena morio are investigated. Overall, 38 peaks comprising 41 chemical compounds, were found to release reactions in the antennae of male A. morio bees. Analyses using coupled gas chromatography-mass spectrometry revealed the presence of alkanes and alkenes with 20 to 29 carbon atoms, aldehydes (C9 to C24) and two esters. Almost all of those compounds were found in similar proportions in both, the floral extracts of O. iricolor and cuticle surface extracts of A. morio females. The pattern of biologically active volatiles described here is very similar to that used by other Ophrys species pollinated by Andrena males.  相似文献

It is generally assumed that mating history has potentially important effects on the mating biology of insects, and differences in mating success of males, in relation to their mating history, have been commonly documented in Lepidoptera. Mating success of male European corn borer Ostrinia nubilalis, in relation to their mating history, and consequent fitness parameters for their female mates, were investigated. Mating experience significantly increased mating success for O. nubilalis males. Mating with experienced males significantly reduced lifetime fecundity and longevity of females. Sperm depletion, transfer of less nutritive substances or more toxic substances may explain the female response to mating with experienced males. Male persistence or some other compensatory mechanism may account for female acceptance of experienced males.  相似文献

The brine shrimp Artemia salina L. and the polychaete worm Ophryotrocha labronica La Greca and Bacci were acclimated in sea water with copper sulphate at concentrations of 0.1, 0.05, and 0.025 ppm Cu++, for 3 and 2 generations, respectively. Both adults and larvae of A. salina showed a greater tolerance to 1 ppm Cu++ after acclimation compared to controls of the same age, although this tolerance diminished in successive generations. The acclimation effect was less marked in O. labronica. In both species, tolerance to 10 ppm Cu++ upwards was not enhanced. Growth-rate inhibition and an adverse effect on reproduction was observed, in some instances in direct relationship to the acclimation concentration. It is suggested that, in A. salina, a certain tolerance to copper may be acquired through exposure to low concentrations.  相似文献

We studied mate attraction by females of the praying mantid, Tenodera aridifolia sinensis, testing honest signaling of mate availability versus deceptive signaling to attract males for sexual cannibalism. We experimentally varied female diet and mating history and measured the rate of attraction of a wild population of males to caged females. Honest signaling theory predicts that virgin females will attract males at the greatest rate whereas deceptive signaling predicts that hungry females (which are more likely to cannibalize males) will attract more males, particularly among non-virgin females. Our results show that hungry females did not attract more males than well-fed females. Indeed, the opposite was true: hungry females attracted significantly fewer males. Moreover, hungry females were no more likely than well-fed females to attract males subsequent to mating, and mated females attracted males at a lower rate than did virgin females. We also observed female T. aridifolia sinensis and male Mantis religiosa arriving at the caged females and we discuss the significance of these observations. The results refute the hypothesis of deceptive signaling and show that mate attraction signals of female T. aridifolia sinensis are honest indicators of female mate availability and a lower risk of sexual cannibalism.  相似文献

Males vary in the degree to which they invest in mating. Several factors can explain this variation, including differences in males’ individual condition and the fact that males allocate their energy depending on the context they face in each mating attempt. Particularly, female quality affects male reproductive success. Here, we studied whether male guppies (Poecilia reticulata) strategically allocated more mating effort, in terms of mating behaviour and male–male competition, when they were matched with a receptive (R) female than a non-receptive one. In accordance with our prediction, we found that males increased their mating behaviour when they were with a receptive female. Even though male guppies can inseminate non-receptive females, we only found high levels of courtship between males that were with a receptive female rather than a non-receptive one. Although there was little affect of female receptivity on male–male competition, we found that males chased and interrupted courtships more with receptive females than with non-receptive females regardless of odour. Finally, we also studied whether the sexual pheromone produced by receptive female guppies is a cue that males use in order to increase their mating effort. We found that males were more attracted to a female when they perceived the sexual pheromone, but only increased their mating and aggressive behaviours when females showed receptive behaviour. This strategic increase in mating effort could result in higher male reproductive success because mating attempts towards receptive females are likely to be less costly and males could have a greater probability of fertilisation.  相似文献

Females may choose mates based on secondary sex traits that reflect disease resistance. Accordingly, females should be able to distinguish between unparasitized and parasitized males, and should prefer to mate with unparasitized individuals. Mate and odor preferences for uninfected males or males infected with the nematode, Trichinella spiralis, were examined among prairie voles (Microtus ochrogaster) and meadow voles (M. pennsylvanicus). In a 15-min odor preference test, only female meadow voles distinguished between bedding from parasitized and unparasitized conspecific males, and preferred to spend time with bedding from unparasitized males. Although T. spiralis infection influenced odor preference in female meadow voles, there was no effect of infection status on mate preference among either species. Testosterone and corticosterone concentrations were not different between parasitized and unparasitized males. However, among prairie voles, males that spent an increased amount of time with females during the mate preference test had elevated testosterone concentrations. Taken together, these data suggest that (1) female meadow voles can discriminate between unparasitized and parasitized males, (2) the effects of infection on steroid hormone concentrations may be masked by the effects of social interactions, and (3) parasites may represent a selective constraint on partner preference in voles; however, the life cycle of parasites may influence female preference and should be considered in studies of female preference. The female aggression hypothesis states that resident females may be able to prevent polygyny by behaving aggressively towards intruding females. A critical test of the hypothesis is to provide prospecting females with a choice between displaying mated males some of which have initial mates with artificially reduced levels of aggressiveness. Here we present a mate choice experiment on pied flycatchers Ficedula hypoleuca. The species is a cavity nester, and resident females were prevented from behaving aggressively by enclosing them within their own nestboxes: narrowing the entrance hole so that they could not escape but could still let their head out and have some contact with their mate. This treament had only a minor influence on male behaviour. We studied whether the experimental males were better able to attract a new female than a control group of mated males. Four predictions from the female aggression hypothesis were supported. (1) Mating success of control males was positively related to the distance between their primary and secondary territory. (2) For experimental males, mating success was unrelated to interterritorial distance. (3) Experimental males had higher mating success than control males when the interterritorial distance was short but (4) not when it was long. Experimental males had much lower mating success than unmated males, as would be expected if prospecting females are able to discover male mating status from cues other than visits by primary females to their mates' secondary nest sites.
