This study assesses the potential of the tropical loliginid squid Photololigo sp. to lay multiple batches of eggs and examines changes in somatic growth during reproduction. Histological analysis of the ovary and the relative size of the oviduct to mantle weight and ovary weight were used to determine the potential for multiple spawning. Ovaries of mature females always had immature and mature oocytes present, suggesting that not all the oocytes were maturing simultaneously and that multiple batches of eggs were being produced. Furthermore, poor correlations of oviduct weight with body size and ovary weight indicated that mature oocytes were not accumulating in the oviduct for a single spawning event. Both these observations supported the hypothesis that Photololigo sp. has the potential to lay multiple batches of eggs throughout its life. Specific growth rates, length-weight relationships, relative growth of somatic and reproductive tissue and microscopic assessment of muscle tissue were compared between immature and mature females. Growth rates of immature females were almost twice as fast as those of mature females. Mature females also had no large muscle fibres present, suggesting that energy for reproduction was mobilised from the muscle tissue.  相似文献

A major difficulty confronting the determination of cephalopod reproductive life history is assessing over what portion of the life span an individual is reproductively mature and actively depositing eggs. This paper assesses the potential of the tropical Sepioteuthis lessoniana and two genetic types of the temperate Sepioteuthis australis, to spawn multiple batches of eggs at discrete times throughout the adult life span. This is achieved by histological examination of the ovarian gametogenic cycle and detailed morphological assessments of the reproductive system, in conjunction with other biological information. The genetic type of S. australis found at the northern limits of its Australian distribution showed evidence of a high correlation between body size and quantity of mature eggs, suggesting that eggs may be accumulating to be laid in a single batch. Although maturation was also a size-related process in S. lessoniana and Tasmanian S. australis, oviduct size was not correlated with body weight in mature females, which is indicative of multiple spawning. Further supporting evidence includes relatively low gonadosomatic indices, the heavier weight of the ovary relative to the oviduct, and the feeding activity of mature animals. Mature S. lessoniana and S. australis individuals were present at each location over very wide age and size ranges. In Tasmanian waters, there were distinct seasonal differences in the reproductive biology of S. australis. Summer-caught individuals had much higher gonadosomatic indices and may have been laying larger batches of eggs compared with winter-caught individuals. Summer-caught females also showed a negative correlation between egg size and egg number within the oviduct, suggesting that some individuals were producing fewer, larger eggs and others many smaller eggs. Evidence suggests that considerable flexibility is inherent in the reproductive strategy of both S. lessoniana and S. australis. Received: 11 May 2000 / Accepted: 12 September 2000  相似文献

The functional importance of invasive animals may be measured as the degree to which they dominate secondary production, relative to native animals. We used this approach to examine dominance of invertebrate secondary production by invasive New Zealand mudsnails (Potamopyrgus antipodarum) in rivers. We measured secondary production of mudsnails and native invertebrates in three rivers in the Greater Yellowstone Area (Wyoming, USA): Gibbon River, Firehole River, and Polecat Creek. Potamopyrgus production was estimated by measuring in situ growth rates and multiplying by monthly biomass; native invertebrate production was estimated using size frequency and instantaneous growth methods. Mudsnail growth rates were high (up to 0.06 d(-1)) for juvenile snails and much lower for adult females (0.003 d(-1)). Potamopyrgus production in Polecat Creek (194 g x m(-2) x yr(-1)) was one of the highest values ever reported for a stream invertebrate. Native invertebrate production ranged from 4.4 to 51 g x m(-2) x yr(-1). Potamopyrgus was the most productive taxon and constituted 65-92% of total invertebrate productivity. Native invertebrate production was low in all streams. Based on a survey of production measures from uninvaded rivers, the distribution of secondary production across taxa was much more highly skewed toward the invasive dominant Potamopyrgus in the three rivers. We suggest that this invasive herbivorous snail is sequestering a large fraction of the carbon available for invertebrate production and altering food web function.  相似文献

A population of Palaemonetes pugio Holthuis 1949, inhabiting a fairly constant high salinity estuarine environment (North Inlet), exhibited more rapid growth, earlier first reproduction, a smaller clutch size, more fluctuating sex ratio, and shorter life span. A population in a less saline environment (Minim Creek) showed relatively slower growth, delayed first reproduction, larger clutch size, female-dominated sex ratio, and longer life span. Growth in both areas was rapid in summer and slower in winter, with the females growing much larger than the males. Summer generation females first reproduced at the age of 3.5 months in North Inlet and at 4.8 months in Minim Creek. Minim Creek females larger than 30-mm TL carried more eggs than North Inlet females of similar sizes. Life span in North Inlet was calculated to be 6–7 months for the summer generation and 9–10 months for the winter generation; in Minim Creek, the corresponding longevity estimates were 9–10 months and 12–13 months, respectively. Variations in life history patterns are hypothesized to be the results of numerous environmental factors acting differentially on the various life-stages of the organism. The results suggest that the reproductive flexibility of P. pugio enhances its ability to persist in a variety of environments.Contribution no. 426 of the Belle W. This study analyzed the reproduction and growth of freshwater prawn, Palaemon paucidens De Haan 1844 from Suk-dang lake(Korea). The analysis of the sex ratio showed a higher proportion of males than that of females. The average size of the eggs was 6.12 (+/-0.55) mm3 in the non-eyed stage (stageA) and 7.20 (+/-0.86)mm3 in the eyed stage (stage B). The reproductive output (RO) calculated with the dried-body weight of an incubating female and the weight of the eggs in dried condition was 26.97% (n = 17) of the average females weight. Incubating prawn appeared in April, and the gonadosomatic indices(GSI) showed the highest value during three months from January to March. Based on the month when there was a high proportion of incubating females with a high GSI, the estimated spawning season of P. paucidens was April. The maturity of the female was evaluated by the development of the ovaries and the existence of eggs. The average body length when 50% of the females in the group reached maturity was 8.55 (+/-2.74) mm. The analysis of the length-frequency distribution showed that the life span of P. paucidens ranged from 12 to 13 months. Females mature faster than males.  相似文献

A suite of characteristics is often used to assess egg quality as these properties potentially play important roles in progeny survival and growth. Our objective was to assess egg characteristics including lipid biocomposition of an iteroparous, batch-spawning teleost of wild origin. Maternal allocation to egg number was generally dome-shaped (5 of 8 females) and egg size declined over the breeding season for eight breeding pairs of wild Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) (n = 43 batches). Egg lipid composition ranged considerably among females and between egg batches within females (e.g., phospholipids 40–86 %; polar 47–87 % and neutral lipids 15–52 % of total lipids; polyunsaturated fatty acids 16–50 % of total fatty acids). Principal component analyses revealed significant inter-relationships among maternal traits, batch sequence and fecundity, and egg size and composition. Seasonal trends with regard to lipid deposition were variable; three females showed consistent declines in lipid parameters (μg egg−1) with both batch number and egg diameter, one female showed consistent increase and the four remaining females showed no trend. The three females that exhibited seasonal declines in egg lipid content were characterized as having high fertilization success (>75 %). Our findings highlight the variability in lipid allocation to eggs of batch spawners of wild origin and characterize the composition of endogenous reserves available during embryogenesis and yolk sac larval stages.  相似文献

In a variety of fish species with paternal care of offspring, females prefer to spawn in nests that already contain eggs. This female preference has been hypothesized to explain egg thievery in male sticklebacks, allopaternal care of eggs in minnows, and the evolution of egg-mimicking body features in male cichlids and darters. Here we employ microsatellite-based parentage analyses to evaluate the reproductive success of striped darter (Etheostoma virgatum) males that appear to utilize two of these functionally related tactics to entice females to spawn in their nests. In an isolated population (Clear Creek, Ky.), we observed that breeding males develop conspicuous white spots on their pectoral fins. If these spots are egg mimics, as we suspect, then this represents the fourth independent evolutionary origin of egg mimicry documented to date in darters, the first based on pigmentation (as opposed to physical structures), and the first in which the egg mimics vary greatly in number among males. From direct counts of microsatellite genotypes in clutches of embryos, at least 3.8 females contributed to the progeny within a typical nest, and females tended to spawn preferentially with males that were larger and displayed more egg-mimic spots. In another population (Hurricane Creek, Tenn.) without egg mimics, the multi-locus genetic data document that allopaternal care is common, especially among the smallest males who sometimes tend nests containing their own as well as an earlier sire's offspring. Thus, these foster males had adopted egg-containing nests and then successfully spawned with subsequent females. Overall, the genetic data on paternity and maternity, in conjunction with field observations, suggest that egg mimicry and allopaternal care are two mate-attracting reproductive tactics employed by striped darter males to exploit female preferences for spawning in nests with 'eggs'. Zooplankton populations of a marine area exposed to pollution from the sewage outfall of Marseille-Cortiou have been studied in relation to their horizontal distribution related to distance from the outfall. Samples were collected by various means, and confirmed preliminary results which had indicated that some species tend to cluster in a facies characteristic of a polluted environment. The zone in immediate proximity to the outfall is the most turbid zone; it is extremely poor in fauna but not azoic. Outside this zone and up to 500 m distance from the sewage outlet into the sea, the most euryoecious species (e.g. Acartia clausi, Oithona nana, Euterpina acutifrons, and Oikopleuridae) are frequently present. An intermediate zone then occurs, in which, together with the species mentioned above, other species quite tolerant to pollution (e.g. Clausocalanus spp., Centropages typicus, Paracalanus spp., Candacia armata and some Corycaeidae and Oncaeidae) are well represented. Outside this zone, the zooplanktonic populations show a better defined and more stable structure. Paracalanus spp. are still very abundant, together with Fritillaridae, and fish eggs and larvae. Beneath the turbid surface zone, the impact of pollution seems less marked, and an homogenous zooplankton assemblage is found whose composition is identical to that of species inhabiting unpolluted areas.

The responses of the post-embryonic stages of Corophium volutator (Pallas) and C. arenarium Crawford to the combined effects of salinity and temperature show that gravid females have a wider tolerance than nongravid adult females which in turn are more tolerant than adult males. C. volutator is more tolerant of low salinity (2 to 10) than C. arenarium, but the latter is more tolerant of salinities above 45. The embryos of C. volutator develop normally and hatch at lower salinities and temperatures than those of C. arenarium, in which successful development was recorded at higher temperatures. Females undergoing a pre-copulatory moult failed to lay eggs below salinities of 3 (C. volutator) and 10 (C. arenarium), but in both species the lowest salinity at which all females moulted and laid eggs was 20. The results are discussed in relation to the distribution of both species.  相似文献

An algal community was used to assess the quality of water of Haranbaree dam and Mosam river of Maharashtra. Pollution tolerant genera and species of 4 groups of algae from each of 3 stations of Haranbaree dam and Mosam river were recorded. By using Palmer's index of pollution for rating of water samples the total score of each station of study area was greater than 20 indicating the confirmed high organic pollution. 34 pollution tolerant genera were recorded at all stations of dam and river. Out of 34 pollution tolerant genera, 27 genera and 33 genera were observed at the dam and river sites respectively. In present study 22 pollution tolerant species are observed at dam and river sites.  相似文献

Summary Copulation in Lygaeus equestris L. (Heteroptera, Lygaeidae) is known to last 0.5–24 h. Variations in copula duration of field-collected insects were studied in the laboratory, and different hypotheses concerning the significance of prolonged copulations were tested.Through reciprocal matings with normal and sterile (irradiated) males, sperm displacement was estimated at about 90%. A male could thus increase his fitness by preventing subsequent matings of an inseminated female.Copulations with virgin insects, observed over 15 h, were classified in two categories: short (0.5–8.0 h) and long (> 15 h) duration (Fig. 1). No difference in the number of fertilized eggs was found between long and short copulations, and the insemination rate was highest during the first hour of a couplation (Fig. 2). Long-lasting couplations did not give rise to increased sperm displacement (Table 2). These results indicate that there is no difference in the amount of sperm transferred during short and long copulations and that no insemination takes place during the latter part of a prolonged copulation.Longer lasting copulations occurred when the sex ratio was male-biased than when it was female-biased (Fig. 1). The frequency of prolonged copulations was higher when the female was gravid than when she contained no eggs (virgin) (Figs. 3 and 4). Support is thus given to the hypothesis that prolonged copulation is a male postinsemination strategy to prevent subsequent matings of a female.Females subjected to male competition over a longer period, laid fewer eggs and died earlier than females that were mated but subsequently isolated from males (Fig. 5). Egg batches from females living with males were larger than batches from mated, isolated females (Table 3). This is probably due to a combination of many matings with short intermissions and prolonged copulations, both of which postpone oviposition.Comparisons between copulations of males with either gravid or virgin females during these experiments, led to the conclusion that short copulations with virgin females result from a male decision to terminate copulation after insemination is completed, whereas copula duration with gravid females is more likely to depend on a combination of male and female behavior.  相似文献

Samples of Benthosema pterotum (Alcock) were obtained from the Arabian Sea (1976, 1979, 1981, 1983, 1984), off Mozambique (1978) and from the Bay of Bengal (1979). The sexual maturity stages are described. For females, the size of the largest oocytes was found to be most useful for size of the largest oocytes was found to be most useful for assessing maturity. Mature and spawning fish were found in all seasons. Samples from November 1983 differed from all others in having very few mature females. A few apparently spent fish were observed in July to August 1979 and November 1983. Some females mature at 25 mm and males at 20 mm, whereas others can still be immature at 45 and 40 mm, respectively. Of the total number of stations, four had significantly more males than females, twelve significantly more females, and forty-seven displayed no difference in the sex ratios. The vertical migration of the mature and spawning fish did not differ significantly from that of other individuals. Batch fecundity ranged from ca. 200 to 3 000 eggs fish ranging from 27 to 52 mm, relative fecundity from ca. 2 000 to 7 000 eggs g-1 maternal dry weight. There are indications that B. pterotum spawns only once, but no firm conclusions could be drawn.  相似文献

De novo vitellogenesis is common among teleosts; however, its dynamics and the timing of batch recruitment are poorly understood. In this study, we combine a suite of methods and theories in fish reproductive biology (oocyte packing density, stereology, ovarian allometry, oocyte size frequencies and postovulatory follicle [POF] ageing) to reconstruct the steps and timing of batch recruitment in European anchovy. Using general linear modelling to standardize oocyte numbers, we demonstrate that the fractions of primary growth, cortical alveoli and vitellogenic oocytes in the ovary are relatively stable in females with migratory nucleus oocytes (MN) or with POFs 1 and 2 days old (POF-1 and POF-2), but they change abruptly at hydration. These results imply that batch recruitment in European anchovy occurs in pulses of very short duration (less than a day). The standing crop of vitellogenic oocytes in MN, POF-1 and POF-2 females equals the number of eggs contained in two mature batches.  相似文献

Summary A new technique for identifying eggs of brood parasites to individual females is presented. Twenty-six undeveloped brown-headed cowbird eggs were removed from nests on a small study area in eastern Kansas. Proteins from their yolks were subjected to starch gel electrophoresis. Electromorphs are completely of maternal origin, and results from a separate sample from California showed that electromorphs do not differ among eggs from an individual cowbird. Combinations of electromorphs at four polymorphic loci identified eggs to seven hypothetical females. The binomial probability that two or more of eight females (fieldwork suggested no more than 7–8 females laying on the site) share a particular combination was calculated from an off-site, independent sample of eggs. Six of seven of these probabilities were below 5%. Eggs collected directly from two females matched two of the electromorph combinations. Discriminant function analyses on 11 egg variables correctly classified 95.7% of the eggs to the group in which they were placed by electromorph combination. Patterns of dispersion of the eggs of individuals over host species, time and space were assessed. Despite small sample sizes, it is clear that individuals are not host-specific and overlap considerably in their laying areas.  相似文献

Egg production and development rates of Centropages typicus (Krøyer) were studied in the laboratory under carying food and temperature conditions. Egg production rates in the laboratory ranged from 0 to 124 eggs female-1 d-1 and increased with food concentration up to a critical food concentration (Pc) above which egg production was constant. Egg production rates were influenced by temperature, with more eggs being produced at 15°C than at 10°C. Thalassiosira weisflogii and Prorocentrum micans were determined to be equally capable of supporting egg production at concentrations above Pc at 15°C. Rate of egg production was independent of adult female size when food and temperature were constant. Egg production rates of freshly captured females ranged from 0 to 188 eggs female-1 d-1 and were higher in April and May than in June or July. Hatching rates of eggs increased with increased temperature; 95% of the eggs at 15°C hatched within 48 h, while only 8% of the eggs at 10°C hatched within 48 h. Development rates, determined at 10°C in excess concentrations of T. weisflogii, were 23.0 d from egg release to copepodid state I, 27.0 d to stage II, 29.5 d to stage III, 32.2 d to stage IV, 38.5 d to stage V and 49 d to adulthood based on the average time required for 50% of the organisms in an experiment to attain a given stage. Adult males were usually observed 2 to 4 d before adult females, and therefore have a slightly faster rate of development. The effects of temperature, food type and food concentration on egg production and the seasonal appearances of diatoms in the New York Bight may account for the observed seasonal cycles in abundance of C. typicus in these coastal waters.  相似文献

Summary We observed the sex ratios and age composition of courting, nesting, and nonbreeding birds (in clubs) in four breeding colonies of Herring Gulls in Maine and New York. Breeding pairs, with eggs or chicks, often contained an immature male, but rarely contained an immature female. Similarly, courting pairs contained immature males, but rarely immature females. A higher proportion of courting pairs contained immatures compared with pairs with eggs or chicks. In all four colonies there was an excess of females in the clubs. A simulated colony which assumed unequal survival for males and females had an age ratio for unpaired birds that was similar to the observed values. We conclude that in Herring Gulls, mate competition exists and stems in part from an unequal tertiary sex ratio.  相似文献

The reproductive strategies of two gammaridean amphipod species, Gammarus wilkitzkii and Apherusa glacialis, that permanently inhabit the Arctic sea ice were investigated. G. wilkitzkii reaches sexual maturity at an age of 2 years and produces 128 ± 54 eggs fem.−1 yr−1. Mating takes place during fall and winter, and the development of the large eggs (0.60 to 0.80 mm diam.) lasts 6 to 7 months. The sex ratio of G. wilkitzkii was dominated by males in a proportion of 1.5:1. In vivo studies showed that juveniles are released in batches from the brood pouches of the females during April and May. A. glacialis reaches sexual maturity at the age of 1 year and produces 555 ± 151 eggs fem.−1 yr−1. The eggs are between 0.18 and 0.23 mm in diameter, and are the smallest known for gammaridean amphipods. Eggs are kept in packages of two to eight in the brood pouches of females. The sex ratio of A. glacialis was dominated by females in a proportion of 3:1. The high fecundity of both amphipod species, the release of juveniles in batches over a period of time, a high proportion of females (A. glacialis), and an elongated life-span with multiple spawnings (G. wilkitzkii) are discussed as possible adaptations to the specific and highly variable conditions under Arctic sea ice. Forty-three female Euphausia superba were collected from three sites in Prydz Bay, Antarctica in January 1985. Most gravid females took 3 to 14 d to spawn after capture and some less mature females released eggs after 21 d. Most females spawned only once; overall mean brood size was 2 809 eggs and mean hatchability for eggs from the premoult females was 69.7%. For seven females spawning a second time, overall mean brood size was 597 eggs. Mean hatchability for second-spawn eggs from five premoult females was 67.1%. Possible origins of the second-spawned eggs were small numbers of matured eggs left in the ovaries after the first spawning or eggs developed from those of peripheral nucleolus and vitellogenic stages. Throughout the 8 wk of observations, there was no apparent development of eggs in females which had released all their eggs at one spawning.  相似文献

A technique for preparing seawater suspensions of Kuwait oil and Corexit was developed. The resulting hydrocarbon concentrations were analysed by gas-chromatography and spectrofluorometric methods and the stability of the suspensions with time was determined. It was established that the suspensions have an effective stability from Days 3 to 15 after preparation, since in this period the concentration varies within a relatively narrow range. Adult female Tisbe bulbisetosa appeared to be quite tolerant of this type of hydrocarbon suspension, in short-term experiments, especially considering that the concentrations used in the bioassays were about 200 times higher than those measured in a relatively polluted area of the lagoon of Venice. Long-term effects on number of eggs produced, number of nauplii and hatching success for females of the third and fourth generations, subject to continuous exposure, were negligible compared with controls.  相似文献

Genes of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) are remarkably polymorphic. Several selection mechanisms have been invoked to account for this diversity, including disassortative mating preferences. In addition, eggs may discriminate between sperm based on MHC. To investigate the effects of MHC-genotype on fertilization success, we obtained mature gametes from ripe Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) males and females captured on spawning grounds. The eggs of each female were divided into two batches, and by letting each of 2 males fertilize 1 of the batches, we obtained a total of 36 half-sibling batch-pairs. The semen was diluted to ensure that the two males in each half-sibling batch-pair contributed with the same number of sperm cells. We found that MHC-heterozygous males had significantly higher fertilization success than MHC-homozygous males and neither initial spermatocrit, sperm motility nor swimming velocity co-varied with difference in fertilization success. There was no effect of female genotype or female-male MHC-similarity on fertilization success. However, one MHC-allele was associated with increased fertilization success. It seems plausible that the difference in fertilization success between homo- and heterozygous males may be due to MHC-dependent sperm selection by the ovum.Communicated by M. Abrahams  相似文献
