Living veligers of the Cassoidea have been observed to use a mantle appendage to form and resorb periostracum. Anatomical and histological examinations of a ranellid (Cymatium sp.) larva collected from the Red Sea in 1987 revealed the structure and location of the pallial appendage. The mantle edges of juvenile or adult species of the Cassoidea do not show a comparable specialization. It is demonstrated that cassoid larval conch characters are sufficient to prove the existence of a pallial appendage without anatomical confirmation. A mantle appendage is not known from teleplanic (long-living planktic) veligers of other gastropod superfamilies. In cases where the larval strategies of the latter are known they are totally different. Therefore it is suggested that the adaptation of cassoid larvae to pelagic life is unique among gastropods representing an autapomorphic character of the superfamily.  相似文献

The calanoid copepods, Acartia clausi Giesbrecht and Acartia tonsa Dana, are maintained at high densities in continuous culture at 15°C. Synthetic sea-water medium is recirculated through filters and a foam tower which limits accumulation of dissolved wastes and various metabolites. The ciliate Euplotes vannus Müller is associated in culture with the copepods, and effectively controls bacterial population and accumulation of algal debris. The composition of gas in the vesicles of Sargassum cf. leptopodum Sonder has been investigated. The oxygen content depends upon the oxygen partial pressure of the surrounding medium. It does not depend upon the photosynthetic activity of the vesicle. Evidence is provided that the lower limit of the vertical distribution zone of Sargassum cf. leptopodum Sonder is not controlled by the vesicles' capability of resisting hydrostatic pressure.  相似文献

The mouthparts of Jaera albifrons Leach, Jaera ischiosetosa Forsman, Jaera praehirsuta Forsman and Jaera forsmani Bocquet were examined with the light microscope and the Stereoscan electron microscope, and were found to be identical in all species. The structure of the mouthparts indicate that all four species feed by scouring and abrading algal or bacterial films from rocks or Fucus. Food, therefore, does not seem to be an isolating factor involved in the microdistribution of the four species on a shore.  相似文献

Specimens of Chlamys opercularis, Modiolus modiolus, Mytilus edulis, Crassostrea gigas, Scrobicularia plana and Mya arenaria were exposed to both gradual (sinusoidal) and abrupt (square-wave) salinity fluctuations and measurements made of osmotic, Na+, Mg2+ and Ca2+ concentrations in the hemolymph and where applicable in the mantle fluid. In both sinusoidal and square-wave regimes fluctuating between 100 and 50% seawater (100%=ca. 32 S), the hemolymph Na+, Mg2+, Ca2+ and osmotic concentrations followed the concentrations of the external medium in Chlamys opercularis. The hemolymph and mantle fluid osmotic Na+, Mg2+ and Ca2+ concentrations of Modiolus modiolus, Mytilus edulis, Crassostrea gigas and S. plana followed those of the external medium as long as the molluscs' shell valves remained open. There were no changes in the ionic or osmotic concentrations of the hemolymph or mantle fluid of any of these species during periods of shell-valve closure. The hemolymph osmotic, Na+ and Mg2+ concentrations of wedged-open Modiolus modiolus, Mytilus edulis, C. gigas and S. plana followed those of the external medium. Hemolymph Ca2+ concentrations showed a damped response in C. gigas and Mytilus edulis. The hemolymph osmotic, Na+, Ca2+ and Mg2+ concentrations of Mya arenaria fluctuated in a similar manner to the external medium, but were damped. Wedged-open Mytilus edulis exposed to fluctuating salinity and supplied with a constant supply of 10 mM Ca2+ showed greater changes in hemolymph ionic and osmotic concentrations than M. edulis exposed to the same salinity fluctuation without a constant Ca2+ supply. Chlamys opercularis and Modiolus modiolus survived in a 50% seawater minimum sinusoidal salinity fluctuation for 10 days; wedged-open M. modiolus survived only 3 days. Burrowing had no effect on the osmotic, Na+, Mg2+ or Ca2+ concentrations of the hemolymph of Mya arenaria or S. plana exposed to fluctuating salinities. All of the species studied were shown to be osmoconformers.  相似文献

The bivalve Petricola typica occurs from North Carolina (USA) to Brazil where, according to Rios (1970), its range extends to Rio Grande do Sul. The species can be found in coral blocks of Mussismilia hispida, inside colonies of Schizoporella unicornis (a calcarean bryozoan) and, more frequently, inside the sandy reefs built by the polychaete Phragmatopoma lapidosa (intertidal zone). Initial settlement probably occurs in a pre-existing cavity, which is enlarged to form a hole into which the bivalve fits exactly when its valves open. The shell, mantle, and siphons are described in detail. Special attention was paid to the ctenidia, labial palps, and stomach.  相似文献

The pleopod ventilatory activity of the tube-dwelling amphipods Corophium volutator (Pallas) and C. arenarium Crawford is intermittent. Unlike the free-living amphipod Marinogammarus obtusatus (Dahl), which increases its rate of pleopod beating, the pleopod beat rate of both Corophium species is unaffected by low oxygen concentrations. However, the nature of the intermittent ventilation rhythm is altered so that, at low oxygen concentrations, the pleopods of Corophium beat almost continuously. It is suggested that the intermittent ventilation of Corophium can be interpreted as an adaptation to a tubicolous existence. The peracaridean Tanais chevreuxi Dollfus has 2 independent ventilatory systems, the maxilliped epipodites and the pleopods. The former, which respond to low oxygen concentrations, are thought to be the principal respiratory organs of T. chevreuxi, while the pleopods, which show no response to low oxygen tensions, are believed to be primarily concerned in filter feeding.  相似文献

Employing the gonad index method, the reproductive cycles of three decapod crustaceans, Uca annulipes (Latreille), Portunus pelagicus (Linnaeus) and Metapenaeus affinis (Milne-Edwards) have been studied. In these crustaceans breeding is not continuous all the year round, but extends over several months of the year with distinct peak periods of gonadal activity. The male and female reproductive cycles are not concurrent. The peak of the reproductive cycle of males occurs slightly earlier in the breeding season than that of females. These studies indicate the possibility of production of successive broods of eggs during the same breeding season. In these species, the low saline conditions of the monsoon period are unfavourable for breeding. The medium and high saline conditions during the post-monsoon and pre-monsoon months, respectively, with plenty of planktonic food for the larvae, seem to be the favourable periods for breeding activity.  相似文献

Photomicroscopy and scanning electron microscopy were used to determine the fine structure of the latero-frontal cirri on the gills of three species of bivalve mollusc: Mytilus edulis Linn., Barnea candida (Linn.), and Petricola pholadiformis Lam. The component cilia are seen to branch off alternately along the length of each cirrus. Each of these free, lateral lengths of the cilia are separated from the next on their side by a mean distance of 0.6 m. They extend to a mean length of 2.7 m in M. edulis, the species described in detail. It is shown that a complete straining mesh can be formed over the gill ostium during normal filtering and the aperture of this mesh correlates well with the previously recorded filtering efficiency for Mytilus.  相似文献

Fungi inhabiting Sargassum spp. from the Sargasso Sea were examined. Three ascomycetes were found, two of which are new records for this environment. Haloguignardia oceanica (Ferdinandsen et Winge) Kohlm. comb. nov. was collected only once before, over 50 years ago. Haloguignardia tumefaciens (Cribb et Herbert) Cribb et Cribb was known only from Australia and New Zealand. Imperfect states of these ascomycetes and fruiting bodies (acervuli) of a hyperparasitic deuteromycete (cf. Sphaceloma sp.) were found for the first time in the galls of the two species. Lindra thalassiae Orpurt et al., previously known only from the sea grass Thalassia testudinum Köngig, develops in air bladders of Sargassum sp., causing a shedding of infested vesicles. Two species of crustose brown algae (Ralfsiaceae) are discussed. Petroderma maculiforme is described from several Massachusetts collections and Porterinema fluviatile is described for the first time from North America. The known world-wide distribution of both species is cited, and data are given on their ecology, and vegetative and reproductive periodicities. The wide range of salinities from which plants of these species have been collected indicate that they are both euryhaline. Lithoderma lignicola Kjeliman (1883) is synonymized with Petroderma maculiforme (Wollny) Kuckuck (1897) and Porterinema marina Jaasund (1965) with. Sodium and chloride concentrations of the haemolymph were determined in Sphaeroma rugicauda Leach and S. serratum Fabricius acclimatized to a range of salinities. Sodium loss and uptake (using 22Na) were measured in salinities below 1.1 for S. rugicauda and 7.2 for S. serratum. Potential differences between haemolymph and medium indicate active uptake of both ions in certain salinities. The active-uptake component of total sodium-influx was found to be related non-linearly to the sodium concentration of the medium. Curves of were fitted to the activeuptake data. Km values indicate that, in S. rugicauda, the sodium uptake system has a greater affinity for sodium than in S. serratum. These findings are discussed in relation to the distribution of each species.  相似文献

This paper deals with 6 species of marine gammaridean amphipods belonging to the family Ampithoidae. The specimens described were collected from Mandapam (Gulf of Mannar), India and Thankasserry (Quilon, Kerala), India. The collection includes 3 new species, namely Ampithoe (Ampithoe) serraticauda, Ampithoe (Pleonexes) auriculata and Cymadusa imbroglio. Ampithoe (Ampithoe) kergueleni Stebbing (1888) is a new record for this region, while Ampithoe (Ampithoe) ramondi Audouin (1826) and Cymadusa filosa Savigny (1816), the two well-known tropicopolitan members, are briefly redescribed. The study supports Barnard's (1970, p. 23) contention that the genus Pleonexes Bate (1857) (since reduced to subgeneric status under the genus Ampithoe Leach, 1814) represents only a grade of evolution, but suggests that the structure of the 1st maxillary and mandibular palps and the outer lobes of the lower lip should also be taken into consideration, in combination with the telsonic processes, for distinguishing Pleonexes from Ampithoe. Based on this concept, a reappraisal of some of the species of the genera is suggested. The subgenus Ampithoe is created to hold those species of Ampithoe showing typical characteristics of the genus.  相似文献

The male secondary sex characters of Jaera albifrons Leach, Jaera ischiosetosa Forsman, Jaera praehirsuta Forsman and Jaera forsmani Bocquet are described with the Stereoscan electron microscope (S.E.M.). These characters, which are present on the peraeopods, are the only means of identification for these Jaera species which together form the Jaera albifrons group (Isopoda, Asellota). The male praeoperculum (modified, fused, first pair of pleopods) and appendix masculinae (modified endites of the second pair of pleopods) have also been studied with the S.E.M. and possible functions of the various sex characters are discussed. Both the male operculum and appendix masculinae are similar for each species, suggesting that copulation with females of a different species is anatomically possible. The fact that hybrids are rarely collected in ecological investigations is discussed with reference to the present known information. Two methods of copulation for the members of this group have been proposed and these are discussed. A method of sperm transfer along the male operculum is outlined.  相似文献

Two specimens ofPalaemon serratus Pennant (of about 4 g wet weight) were each given intrahaemocoelic injections of [U-14C] acetate. They were maintained under controlled conditions, and the release of14CO2 and other labelled metabolites was followed for 6 days. The prawns were then sacrificed and fractionated into trichloroacetic acid soluble compounds, lipids, nucleic acids and a protein/chitin residue. Little or no14C had been incorporated into arginine, methionine, valine, threonine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, histidine, phenylalanine and tryptophan. It was inferred thatP. serratus cannot synthesize these amino acids from ordinarily available materials, and that the prawns have an absolute dietary requirement for them. The glucosamine isolated from the protein/chitin residue contained more radioactivity than any of the other compounds examined. This implies a rapid turnover of glucosamine and chitin inP. serratus. The gain in weight of prawns fed on compound diets containing freeze-dried cod muscle was about 70% that of prawns fed on fresh mussel mantle. Predigestion of freeze-dried cod muscle with proteolytic enzymes did not significantly enhance its nutritional valve as assessed by increases in weight. Prawns fed two other compounded diets containing proteins of low nutritional value (gelatin and zein, respectively) grew at about 1/5 the rate of prawns fed fresh mussel mantle. Supplementation of the gelatin and zein in these diets with tryptophan, and with lysine plus tryptophan, respectively, failed to augment their nutritional value significantly.  相似文献

We analyzed several species of the weevil family Mecininae (Coleoptera, Curculionidae) that all feed on iridoid glycoside (IG) containing plants of the Plantaginaceae to investigate whether the beetles sequester these deterrent substances from their host plants. Within the Mecininae two genera of the tribe Cionini were found to sequester aucubin and catalpol: Cionus Clairville and Schellenberg and Cleopus Dejean. Both analyzed genera of the Mecinini, Mecinus Germar and Rhinusa Stephens, do not sequester IGs although the compounds are present in their food plants. They thus represent the first case of specialists on IG plants that have not evolved adaptations to use the compounds. However, in contrast to the Cionini these genera have a hidden lifestyle, so that their need for defence might be lower. Both Cionus and Cleopus, sequester catalpol with a higher efficiency than aucubin. However, in contrast to Cionus species, Cleopus species only sequester catalpol. In species feeding on Scrophularia, the aucubin concentration is higher while in beetles on Verbascum catalpol is usually dominating. This pattern can also be detected in the only species living on both plants, Cionus hortulanus. The ability to sequester IGs must have a single origin at the base of the sister genera Cionus and Cleopus.  相似文献

Desiccation as a factor in the intertidal zonation of barnacles   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Four species of balanomorph barnacles, Balanus crenatus Brugière, B. balanoides (L.), Elminius modestus Darwin and Chthamalus stellatus (Poli), were studied to assess the susceptibility of intertidal barnacle species to desiccation. Known sized samples of barnacles were exposed to controlled desiccating conditions and subsequent survival and water loss were determined. It is clear that the ability to live high on the shore is dependent on a reduction of the overall permeability to water loss. Because of greater surface area to volume ratios, small stages are particularly prone to desiccation. In normal intertidal emersion periods, small stages of B. crenatus particularly, and also of B. balanoides and E. modestus which are similar in their desiccation resistance, would be susceptible to desiccation at normal temperatures and low humidities. Large barnacles would be more prone to death from high temperatures when the tide is out. The spat of C. stellatus, although surviving much longer than spat of larger dimensions of the other species, must also be prone to prolonged emersion conditions at high shore levels.  相似文献

Population energy budgets estimated on the assumption of steady state conditions for Nerita tessellata Gmelin, N. versicolor Gmelin, and N. peloronta L. on Barbados, W. Indies, are presented. Large differences in population structure, and hence energetics, occurred at different localities along the beach. Relatively high proportions (81 to 88%) of the assimilated energy were lost via metabolism. Assimilation efficiencies ranged from 39 to 43%, net growth efficiencies from 5 to 13%, and ecological efficiencies from 3 to 7%. For each species, production (P), energy flow (A) and total energy consumption (C) were expressed as functions of animal size, in order to facilitate gross estimations of the energy components for other populations for which data on size-frequency and density are available. Respiration studies of all three species in the laboratory failed to detect differences between respiration rates in air or under seawater.  相似文献

In an attempt to clarify the surface structure of Heterosigma akashiwo, the organisms were processed by a series of currently utilized methods for carbohydrate and protein histochemistry of light microscopy. The results indicated that: (1) H. akashiwo cell has previously undetected glycocalyx on the cell surface; (2) this extracellular structure consists of at least two different types of acidic complex carbohydrates, sulfated and non-sulfated, together with a neutral carbohydrate-protein complex with 1,2-glycol groups and -d-mannosyl and -d-glucosyl residues; (3) a particular moiety of acidic complex carbohydrates involved in the glycocalyx is presumably hyaluronic acid or a closely related substance; and (4) the histochemical nature of the glycocalyx on the cell surface of the present species is comparable with that of Chattonella antiqua, excluding a difference in the nature of the neutral carbohydrate-protein complex.  相似文献

Arylsulphatases (ASases) have been identified in the mantle tissues of the barnacle Balanus eburneus Gould. This is the first report of these enzymes in the Cirripedia. Using p-nitrocatechol sulphate (NCS) as a substrate, the optimum pH for activity was found to be 5.6 in 0.5 M-acetate buffer, and substrate concentration of 12 mM. The activity of the enzyme was strongly inhibited by phosphate, sulphite and sulphate and not by cyanide, indicating the presence of Type II ASase. Biochemical and electrophoretic studies revealed the coexistence of at least two distinct Type II ASases in the mantle tissues. These are probably similar to the ASase-A and ASase-B reported for vertebrate tissues. The presence of multiple molecular forms of ASase capable of hydrolyzing potassium 6-benzoyl-2-naphthyl sulphate was demonstrated by polyacrylamide gel disc-electrophoresis. The activity patterns of ASases in the mantle tissues were studied in relation to the molt cycle. The activity of ASase-B followed a cyclic pattern which correlated with the molt stages, reaching a maximum in the postmolt. The activity of ASase-A remained essentially the same during the entire molt cycle. Analysis of the activities after dialysis indicates a change in the activity of ASase-B into a non-fluctuating pattern. The enzyme was found in all stages of development, with a ninefold increase in activity in adult forms. The fact that a greater activity was found in the nondigestive organs and that there is an increase in the activity of ASase in tissues of unfed (starved) specimens indicates that the enzyme does not function in the digestive processes, as suggested for other animals by certain investigators. The evidence in this study implicates a major role for dialyzable inhibitory factor(s) as the mechanism involved in the regulation of the activity of ASase-B during the molt cycle. The possible relationship of endogenous phosphate and/or neurosecretory substance(s) with the dialyzable inhibitory factor(s) is discussed. A discussion speculating on the relationship of ASase activity to the cyclic formation and hardening of the exoskeleton and adhesive substance(s) is also presented.  相似文献
