A pelletization process is used to manufacture artificial lightweight coarse aggregate using fly ash. Pelletization depends on the size of particles and their distribution, the wettability of particles and moisture content, along with the process related parameters. A review indicates that only limited studies have been reported on the pelletization of fly ash aggregates. The influence of the following parameters has been studied: (i) speed of revolution of pelletizer disc, (ii) angle of pelletizer disc, (iii) moisture content, and (iv) duration of pelletization. Fractional factorial experiments using the concept of Taguchi's orthogonal array is used in this study, which uses an orthogonal array table to arrange multifactor experiments and uses statistical methods to analyze the experimental results. The relative influence of the factors above and their interaction effects on the strength, water absorption and size growth of fly ash aggregates are discussed.  相似文献

Waste sunflower frying oil is used in biodiesel production by transesterification using an enzyme as a catalyst in a batch reactor. Various microbial lipases have been used in transesterification reaction to select an optimum lipase. The effects of various parameters such as temperature, methanol:oil ratio, enzyme concentration and solvent on the conversion of methyl ester have been studied. The Pseudomonas fluorescens enzyme yielded the highest conversion. Using the P. fluorescens enzyme, the optimum conditions included a temperature of 45 °C, an enzyme concentration of 5% and a methanol:oil molar ratio 3:1. To avoid an inhibitory effect, the addition of methanol was performed in three stages. The conversion obtained after 24 h of reaction increased from 55.8% to 63.84% because of the stage-wise addition of methanol. The addition of a non-polar solvent result in a higher conversion compared to polar solvents. Transesterification of waste sunflower frying oil under the optimum conditions and single-stage methanol addition was compared to the refined sunflower oil.  相似文献

Directive 2000/53/EC sets a goal of 85% material recycling from end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) by the end of 2015. The current ELV recycling rate is around 80%, while the remaining waste is called automotive shredder residue (ASR), or car fluff. In Europe, this is mainly landfilled because it is extremely heterogeneous and often polluted with car fluids. Despite technical difficulties, in the coming years it will be necessary to recover materials from car fluff in order to meet the ELV Directive requirement. This study deals with ASR pretreatment and pyrolysis, and aims to determine whether the ELV material recycling target may be achieved by car fluff mechanical separation followed by pyrolysis with a bench scale reactor. Results show that flotation followed by pyrolysis of the light, organic fraction may be a suitable ASR recycling technique if the oil can be further refined and used as a chemical. Moreover, metals are liberated during thermal cracking and can be easily separated from the pyrolysis char, amounting to roughly 5% in mass. Lastly, pyrolysis can be a good starting point from a "waste-to-chemicals" perspective, but further research should be done with a focus on oil and gas refining, in order both to make products suitable for the chemical industry and to render the whole recycling process economically feasible.  相似文献

Until only recently fluff has been largely disposed of in controlled landfill sites. However, in Europe environmental regulations, including the EU Landfill Directive 1999/31/EC and ELV (End of Life Vehicle) Directive 2000/53/EC, have dramatically increased the pressure on all stakeholders to develop alternative solutions. As increasingly stringent legislation forces Shredder Residues (SR) to be diverted from landfilling, newly developed technologies will be in a position to compete for the market value of disposing of the waste.However, the fluff waste stream is so variable that it cannot be automatically assumed that processes developed for one type of fluff will prove to be suitable for other fluff streams. This situation has contributed towards convincing stakeholders to withhold investment funds or delay taking decisions as to how best to proceed; as a consequence, very few technologies have been fully developed on a commercial basis. It is of particular interest therefore that commercial alternatives to be used in dealing with this complex waste stream should be identified.The present paper illustrates the findings of a full-scale thermal treatment performed on SR samples obtained from various shredding plants. The outcome of the study provides an important contribution towards assessing the feasibility and reliability of the process, thus constituting a basic prerequisite for process performance evaluation. The full-scale plant, designed for the thermo-valorization of tyres, was purpose-modified to allow for fluff combustion. Three different fluff compositions (car fluff with different percentage of shredding, whites and 100% car fluff) were taken into consideration. Both the raw samples and solid products were thoroughly characterized. Combustion emissions were continuously analyzed during the test period, alternatively operating for tyre and fluff combustion. Classification of combustion residues for landfill disposal was carried out indicating only 2% (ashes) as hazardous waste. Preliminary results, obtained from a unsophisticated thermodynamic analysis of the process, indicated a value of 0.61 for energy efficiency parameter calculated in accordance with the Directive 2008/98/EC.To conclude, the thermal treatment investigated may be deemed an appropriate technique for use in managing fluff. Indeed, values obtained for all organic and inorganic contaminants released into the atmosphere were lower than legal limits prescribed, and a significant energy content was recovered from waste fractions.  相似文献

A mathematical model simulating the hydrological and biochemical processes occurring in landfilled waste is presented and demonstrated. The model combines biochemical and hydrological models into an integrated representation of the landfill environment. Waste decomposition is modelled using traditional biochemical waste decomposition pathways combined with a simplified methodology for representing the rate of decomposition. Water flow through the waste is represented using a statistical velocity model capable of representing the effects of waste heterogeneity on leachate flow through the waste. Given the limitations in data capture from landfill sites, significant emphasis is placed on improving parameter identification and reducing parameter requirements. A sensitivity analysis is performed, highlighting the model's response to changes in input variables. A model test run is also presented, demonstrating the model capabilities. A parameter perturbation model sensitivity analysis was also performed. This has been able to show that although the model is sensitive to certain key parameters, its overall intuitive response provides a good basis for making reasonable predictions of the future state of the landfill system. Finally, due to the high uncertainty associated with landfill data, a tool for handling input data uncertainty is incorporated in the model's structure. It is concluded that the model can be used as a reasonable tool for modelling landfill processes and that further work should be undertaken to assess the model's performance.  相似文献

The characteristics of municipal solid waste (MSW) play a key role in many aspects of waste disposal facilities and landfills. Because most of a landfill is made up of MSW, the overall stability of the landfill slopes are governed by the strength parameters and physical properties of the MSW. These parameters are also important in interactions involving the waste body and the landfill structures: cover liner, leachate and gas collection systems. On the other hand, the composition of the waste, which affects the geotechnical behavior of the MSW, is dependent on a variety of factors such as climate, disposal technology, the culture and habits of the local community. It is therefore essential that the design and stability evaluations of landfills in each region be performed based on the local conditions and the geotechnical characteristic of the MSW. The Bandeirantes Landfill, BL, in São Paulo and the Metropolitan Center Landfill, MCL, in Salvador, are among the biggest landfills in Brazil. These two disposal facilities have been used for the development of research involving waste mechanics in recent years. Considerable work has been made in the laboratory and in the field to evaluate parameters such as water and organic contents, composition, permeability, and shear strength. This paper shows and analyzes the results of tests performed on these two landfills. The authors believe that these results could be a good reference for certain aspects and geotechnical properties of MSW materials in countries with similar conditions.  相似文献

Many different instruments exist which can be used in environmental policy. No one instrument is superior to all others in all situations. The instrument used in a specific situation depends on the goals to be achieved and on the specific environmental problem (for example, the number of polluters, monitoring problems, etc.). To manage more effectively present environmental issues it may be necessary to combine the use of traditional economic instruments with new economic mechanisms. An example is shown how such a new economic mechanism, a combination of the “utilitarian desires” rule and a tax rule, could assist to locate a new waste disposal site.  相似文献

Interpenetrating polymer networks from agricultural products such as glycerol modified castor oil polyurethanes and cardanol based dyes have not been extensively studied so far. Such polymers were synthesized using benzoyl peroxide as initiator and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as cross-linker. Characterizations of these polymers were performed by Fourier Transform infra red spectra and thermal analysis techniques such as thermogravimetric analysis, derivative thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis. The kinetic parameters such as activation energies and orders of reaction were estimated by using Freeman?CAnderson??s method. The effects of changes in polyurethane to dye monomer weight ratio and NCO/OH molar ratio of polyurethanes on the properties of such polymers were studied.  相似文献

Sustainable waste management system for effluents treatment sludge has been a pressing issue for pulp and paper sector. Recycling is always recommended in terms of environmental sustainability. Following an approach of waste valorisation, this work aims to demonstrate the technical viability of producing fiber-cement roof sheets incorporating cellulose primary sludge generated on paper and pulp mills.From the results obtained with preliminary studies it was possible to verify the possibility of producing fiber-cement sheets by replacing 25% of the conventional used virgin long fiber by primary effluent treatment cellulose sludge. This amount of incorporation was tested on an industrial scale. Environmental parameters related to water and waste, as well as tests for checking the quality of the final product was performed. These control parameters involved total solids in suspension, dissolved salts, chlorides, sulphates, COD, metals content. In the product, parameters like moisture, density and strength were controlled.The results showed that it is possible to replace the virgin long fibers pulp by primary sludge without impacts in final product characteristics and on the environment.This work ensures the elimination of significant waste amounts, which are nowadays sent to landfill, as well as reduces costs associated with the standard raw materials use in the fiber-cement industrial sector.  相似文献

针对近年来企业轻质油品铁路装车系统改造过程中需要注意的几个问题进行了危害性分析,并提出了整改方案:栈台改造时要确保罐车与栈台边缘的距离满足安全间距;确保鹤管和罐车的准确对位;装车流速的控制即要考虑铁路部门不超过3h的要求,也要满足安全流速的要求;装车泵宜选用变频技术;不同油品的鹤管必须分开设置;装车前罐车内的残油和鹤管管线中的残油应进行回收处理;密封盖的选型应考虑密封面的形式和装车过程中车辆的下沉等因素;油气回收设施与栈台的距离不应超过800mm,油气回收主管线的直径可根据实际装车泵最大流量进行核算。  相似文献

Germination tests on the Komatsuna (Brassica rapa var. peruviridis) seed using water extract from compost has often been performed in Japan to evaluate compost maturity; however, most of the germination tests have been carried out without using any rationally defined experimental criteria to determine germination and to explain the influence of cultivars. Here, we performed a series of germination tests to examine the applicability of the experimental criteria for germination and the influence of cultivars on germination rate. Germination rate varied according to the criteria introduced in this paper, and two criteria, "seed size (3)" and "5?mm (2)", were selected for testing. In addition, two types of inhibitory influence, stop and slowness, were observed and compared with the criteria. The logistic regression curve of Logit, a function of germination rate to logarithmic value of the dilution ratio of the water extract was parameterized to compare the effects of the cultivars on germination rate. The statistical analysis of the parameters showed that dilution ratio greatly influenced germination rate, and the cultivar itself also influenced the rate. Consequently, the specific experimental criteria for germination and determining the influence of cultivars were proven to be indispensable for evaluating compost maturity using the germination test.  相似文献

建立了硝酸加热消解后采用电感耦合等离子体发射光谱(ICP-OES)测定石化废水中重金属(As,Cd,Cr,Cu,Zn,Pb,Mn)的方法,优化了仪器工作参数,得到了线性回归方程,并对该方法进行了评价。优化后的仪器工作参数为射频功率1 150 W、雾化器流量0.70 L/min、辅助气流量0.50 L/min。各重金属元素回归方程的相关系数均在0.999 9以上,检出限为0.000 18~0.007 00 mg/L,相对标准偏差为0.1%~2.0%,加标回收率为96.3%~102.2%。该方法具有线性关系好、检出限低、精密度和准确度高、分析速度快等优点。  相似文献

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) such as Fenton, electro-Fenton and photo-Fenton have been applied effectively to remove refractory organics from landfill leachate. The Fenton reaction is based on the addition of hydrogen peroxide to the wastewater or leachate in the presence of ferrous salt as a catalyst. The use of this technique has proved to be one of the best compromises for landfill leachate treatment because of its environmental and economical advantages. Fenton process has been used successfully to mineralize wide range of organic constituents present in landfill leachate particularly those recalcitrant to biological degradation. The present study reviews the use of Fenton and related processes in terms of their increased application to landfill leachate. The effects of various operating parameters and their optimum ranges for maximum COD and color removal are reviewed with the conclusion that the Fenton and related processes are effective and competitive with other technologies for degradation of both raw and pre-treated landfill leachate.  相似文献

There are no known methods which will effectively separate compounds consisting of plastic fibers and latex binders, or plastics coated with textiles. To separate the fibers and the plastic carrier from the other materials, high-pressure water jets have been used. Based on this practice, a method was developed to treat waste carpets and automotive interior materials with water jets in order to recycle their plastic components. Experiments were performed to investigate the modes of destruction as well as the influence of process parameters. Based on these investigations, a pilot device for the treatment of waste carpets (sheets or chips) was designed and installed. It was shown that the proposed method works with a high degree of cleanliness and selectivity. A general process scheme was developed in order to apply the method to recycling processes.  相似文献

In the analysis and design of municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills, there are many uncertainties associated with the properties of MSW during and after MSW placement. Several studies are performed involving different laboratory and field tests to understand the complex behavior and properties of MSW, and based on these studies, different models are proposed for the analysis of time dependent settlement response of MSW. For the analysis of MSW settlement, it is very important to account for the variability of model parameters that reflect different processes such as primary compression under loading, mechanical creep and biodegradation. In this paper, regression equations based on response surface method (RSM) are used to represent the complex behavior of MSW using a newly developed constitutive model. An approach to assess landfill capacities and develop landfill closure plans based on prediction of landfill settlements is proposed. The variability associated with model parameters relating to primary compression, mechanical creep and biodegradation are used to examine their influence on MSW settlement using reliability analysis framework and influence of various parameters on the settlement of MSW are estimated through sensitivity analysis.  相似文献

Quasi‐passive in situ remediation technologies, such as the use of permeable reactive barriers to treat contaminated groundwater or applications of granular activated carbon to treat polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB)‐contaminated, near‐surface sediments, are proven or promising technologies that may be limited in application due to the traditional construction techniques normally used for placement in the environment. High‐pressure waterjets have traditionally been used to excavate material during mining operations or to cut rock or other durable material. Waterjets have the potential to place amendments in the subsurface at depths greater than those that can be obtained using traditional construction techniques. Likewise, waterjets may have less negative impact on near‐surface utilities and/or sensitive ecological systems. Laboratory experiments were performed to characterize the placement of two solid amendments in a simulated saturated aquifer. A second set of experiments was performed to characterize the effectiveness of waterjets for placing a third amendment in simulated intertidal sediments. The laboratory work focused on characterizing the nature of the waterjet penetration of the aquifer matrix and the saturated sediments, as well as the corresponding waterjet parameters of pressure, nozzle size, and injection time. The laboratory results suggest that field trials may be appropriate for future investigations. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

Xenobiotic compounds are widely used in several industries; hence they frequently appear in industrial wastewaters. It is a well-known fact that even the discharge of conventionally treated wastewater may have adverse effects on the receiving water environment. Turkey, a developing EU applicant country, has many industrial sectors producing large amounts of xenobiotic-containing wastewaters. The problem is only enlarged by the lack of monitoring of these substances due to the deficiencies associated with their analysis and detection. Thus, studies in Turkey are based on the use of some collective parameters as a substitute for the xenobiotic itself. Biological, physicochemical, and integrated treatment technologies have been investigated for the removal and/or minimization of the possible adverse effects of xenobiotics in industrial wastewaters. In this respect, this paper provides an overview of the studies conducted on xenobiotic-containing wastewaters from specific industries in Turkey. Although the studies add invaluable information to the scientific background on the subject, new research on the exact biochemical mechanisms of xenobiotic biodegradation will further extend our understanding for improving treatment.  相似文献

In-situ biological solid-phase (or land) treatment was cost-effectively used to remediate 1,500 cubic yards (1,100 m3) of contaminated soil within three months of field operation following spillage of an estimated 12,000 gallons (45,000 L) of vinyl acetate from a railroad tank car onto surface soil. The vinyl acetate rapidly hydrolyzed to acetate and acetaldehyde with concentrations ranging up to 22,000 and 3,000 mg/kg, respectively. Ethanol, a metabolic intermediate, was found to accumulate in soil to concentrations as high as 280 mg/kg. The estimate for excavation, transportation, and disposal of the contaminated soil as a special waste, and for backfilling of the excavated area, was $850,000. The cost for biological remediation of the contaminated soil was $400,000, which was less than half the cost of excavation. In-situ biological treatments have been used to readily remove contaminants, such as acrylonitrile, styrene, butylcellosolve, ethylacrylate, and n-butylacrylate, at other sites involving railroad incidents.  相似文献

The behavior of silicone elastomers in landfills has not been well studied. Their impact on the environment is not known and, consequently, it has not been possible to establish robust Life Cycle Assessments of these materials. In the first part of this study, a methodology for assessing silicone degradation pathways is described. The chemical and biological parameters were considered separately. Firstly, parameters such as pH, redox potential and cation concentration were monitored and then degradation in aerobic and anaerobic conditions was investigated. Any impacts on microbial diversity were also taken into account, using bio-molecular tools. In the second part, a case study on the degradation of Room Temperature Vulcanizable silicone elastomers was performed to validate this methodology. The results indicate that condensation catalysts play a key role at their end-of-life, in both chemical and biological degradation. Moreover, these compounds have a significant effect on microbial communities (similarities with blank samples <5?%). As a consequence, the choice of catalyst should be carefully considered to assess any environmental impacts.  相似文献
