The toxic form of methylmercury is of concern in terms of its neurotoxicity, genotoxicity and reproductive toxicity. Extensive research has been carried out on the effects of exposure to high levels of this toxic compound, but this is not true for research on exposure to lower levels. The harmful effects of methylmercury are a cause for concern irrespective of the exposure levels. The problem becomes more serious because of biomagnifications of methylmercury. Disorders may develop during neonatal stage and then develop further during the lifetime. The common effects which can be seen are retarded brain development and permanent disorders like cerebral palsy. This can also cause neurogenerative disorders like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Research on animals has also shown toxicity. Inorganic Hg was found to be present in brains of neonatal rats, in monkeys prenatal exposure to MeHg resulted in a reduced number of births, and birds laid a lesser number of eggs and the infant mortality rate was higher. 相似文献

The industrial waste effluents from two industries of Durgapur have been traced along the course of Tamla Nalah at selected sites up to its confluence with the Damodar river and downstream. There are evidences of contamination of the river with toxic pollutants—ammonia, phenol, cyanide, sulphide, and trace mercury from Tamla Nalah. The upstream river water (Durgapur barrage), which is believed to be fairly pure, is actually not much better than the downstream river water. Monitoring data for about a year are presented and discussed. 相似文献

This paper contributes to an enhanced understanding of present climatic conditions, observed climate trends and regional climate vulnerability of the Bhutan Himalayas. Bhutan’s complex, often high-altitude terrain and the severe impact of the Indian summer monsoon leads to a strong exposure of the countries’ key economic sectors (agriculture, forestry, hydropower generation and tourism) to climatic changes. Climate change also threatens Bhutan’s vast biodiversity and increases the likelihood of natural hazards (e.g. glacier lake outburst floods, flash floods, droughts and forest fires). A better understanding of Bhutan’s climate and its variability, as well as observed and possible climate impacts, will help in improving the handling of regional social, economic and ecologic challenges not limited to the Himalayas. Only a few climatological studies exist for the eastern Himalayas. They mainly focus on adaptation to immediate threats by glacier lake outbursts. In contrast, this paper (1) investigates the average spatial and inner-annual diversity of the air temperature regime of Bhutan, based on local meteorological observations, (2) discusses past temperature variability, based on global datasets, and (3) relates effects of observed warming to water availability, hydropower development, natural hazards, forests, biodiversity, agriculture, human health and tourism in the Bhutan Himalayas. Results indicate a large spatial and temporal temperature variability within Bhutan and considerably increasing temperatures especially over recent decades. Implications of regional climatic changes on various socio-economic sectors and possible adaptation efforts are discussed. 相似文献

The determination of 210Po and 210Pb was performed in marine organisms from the seashore to abyssal depths, encompassing a plethora of species from the microscopic plankton to the sperm whale. Concentrations of those radionuclides ranged from low values of about 5 × 10−1 Bq kg−1 (wet wt.) in jellyfish, to very high values of about of 3 × 104 Bq kg−1 (wet wt.) in the gut walls of sardines, with a common pattern of 210Po > 210Pb.These radionuclides are primarily absorbed from water and concentrated by phyto- and microzooplankton, and then are transferred to the next trophic level along marine food chains. Investigation in epipelagic, mesopelagic, bathypelagic and abyssobenthic organisms revealed that 210Po is transferred in the marine food webs with transfer factors ranging from 0.1 to 0.7, and numerically similar to those of the energy transfer in the marine food chains. As 210Po preferentially binds to amino acids and proteins, its transfer in food chains likely traces protein transfer and, thus, 210Po transfer factors are similar to ecotrophic coefficients. 210Pb is transferred less efficiently in marine food chains and this contributes to increased 210Po:210Pb activity ratios in some trophic levels. 相似文献

The paper analyzes the influence of lead toxicity by anaerobic granule sludge inhibition and recovering experiments. The result shows that there are different inhibition types at different lead contents. Higher lead content leads to more inhibition granular sludge, and at the same time, the time of gas recovery is different. Lower lead content per microorganism results in sooner sludge recovery. Surficial sediments and mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) from the Istanbul Strait and Marmara Sea were analysed for sixteen parent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) contents by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) employing isotope dilution technique. Microalgae toxicity testing was applied to sediment elutriates and biological responses in terms of filtration rate and lysosomal stability were measured in mussels. Total PAH concentrations ranged from 2.1 to 3152 ng g? 1 dry wt in sediments and from 43–601 ng g? 1 wet weight in mussels. Molecular indices of phenanthrene/ anthracene, fluoranthene/pyrene and benzo(a)anthracene/chrysene were used to differentiate between pyrolytic and petroleum origin. Results showed that most of the contamination originates from high temperature pyrolytic inputs with some slight contribution of petrogenic PAH. PAH in sediments were frequently lower than the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)–ERM (Effects Range Medium) index. Results of sediment elutriate toxicity testing and biomarkers indicate that the cause of negative effects in sediments may result from different classes of pollutants and does not only relate with PAH contamination. Mussels from most of the stations showed both reduced lysosomal membrane stability and filtration rate indicating disturbed health although the two biomarker results did not always complement each other. The effect studies showed that the pollutants in the strait ecosystem have more pronounced effects in the middle parts than those at the Black Sea entrance. 相似文献

Glutaraldehyde (GA), an aliphatic dialdehyde disinfectant, and surfactants, one of the major components of detergents, are widely used in hospitals in order to eliminate pathogenic organisms causing nosocomial infectious diseases. After their use, disinfectants and surfactants reach the wastewater network together. The discharge of chemical compounds from hospital activities into wastewater is also a well-known problem, causing pollution of water resources and constituting an ecological risk for aquatic organisms. In this study, the chemistry and toxicology of GA and surfactant mixtures were reviewed in order to estimate their fate in aquatic ecosystems. Furthermore, their joint effects on aquatic organisms were experimentally assessed in the laboratory. A simple model of the additive joint action of toxicants was used to determine combined acute toxicity effects on the bacteria luminescence and Daphnia mobility of three mixtures containing GA at 1.5 x EC50 24 h [in mg/L] on Daphnia and anionic, cationic and nonionic surfactants at twice their critical micellar concentration (CMC). The mixture of GA and a cationic surfactant gave an EC50 30 min on Vibrio fischeri of 0.158%, with a concentration of 0.04 mg GA/L and 1.04 mg CTAB/L, which provided an additive action. The interaction between GA and an anionic surfactant on V. fischeri produced an antagonistic joint action with an EC50 30 min of 3.95%, containing 1.06 mg GA/L and 33.2 mg SDS/L. A synergistic action with an EC50 30 min of 8.4% on V. fischeri was observed for the mixture containing GA and a nonionic surfactant. Antagonistic interactions were observed for the joint action between GA and the surfactants studied on Daphnia. The mixture of GA and CTAB was more toxic (EC50 24 h=0.02%) than the two other mixtures (EC50 24 h GA+SDS=6%; EC50 24 h GA+TX 100=10%). This study provides new data on the toxicity of certain hospital pollutants entering the aquatic environment and detected in surface and groundwaters. It is necessary to study the joint effects of GA and surfactant mixtures following chronic and sublethal standard bioassays in order to estimate the contribution of the additive joint action models in assessing the environmental risk of hospital wastewater (HW). 相似文献

In this study, organic extracts of total suspended particles (TSP) and the particulate matter (PM) with the size below 2.5 microm (PM(2.5)) combined with organic extracts of the gas phase (GP) collected at two urban and two background localities were analyzed with a bacterial genotoxicity test, SOS chromotest, and an in vitro test for the dioxin toxicity determination, using a modified cell-line of rat hepatoma H4IIE.luc. In addition, the samples of TSP and GP were analyzed for PAHs contents. The PAHs concentrations and both of the toxic activities at the urban localities were much higher than ones at the background localities. Predominantly, traffic was a source of the urban air pollution there which was also confirmed by the evaluation of portions of certain PAHs (BaP/BPE, PYR/BaP) at the localities. On the other hand, the background localities were apparently affected by a long-distance transport of the pollutants from urban and industrial centers. The results of the bioassays indicated potential health risks for the population exposed to the organic air pollutants, especially at the urban localities. Based on the collected samples, distribution of the organic pollutants with the toxic effects in the air was evaluated. The significant portion of the direct genotoxins was bound to the particles larger than 2.5 microm. On the contrary, the indirect genotoxins were bound predominantly to the particles with the size below 2.5 microm. However, in the urban air they may be also bound to the larger particles, as well. While the direct genotoxicity may be related with the presence of PAH-derivatives as well as some polar organic pollutants, the indirect genotoxicity is related with the detected carcinogenic PAHs. But besides the above specified pollutants it is also necessary to consider the presence of other toxic components of the complex organic air pollution mixture that may also show potential health risks. This study demonstrates application of the combination of the screening bioassays for the evaluation of organic air pollution and identification of its health risks. 相似文献

Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) are ubiquitous industrial chemicals, and many of them are produced in large volumes. Due to this fact, several BFRs are found in quantifiable levels in wildlife, as well as in humans. However, we are still lacking information on the effects of BFR in wildlife and, especially, in man. This review summarises the biological effects of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) and derivates, hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) and polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs), however excluding other aspects such as environmental levels. These BFR groups were selected because of a large volume production (PBDEs, TBBPA and derivates), and availability of some toxicity data in spite of much lower production volumes (HBCD and PBBs). In addition, the increase in levels of PBDEs in human (breast milk) and wildlife samples during later time made it especially interesting to include this BFR group. PBDES: The commercial PBDE products predominantly consist of so-called penta-, octa- and decabromodiphenyl ether products. Each product consists of a rather narrow range of congeners and is named after the dominating congener as regards the bromination pattern. Generally, the PentaBDEs seem to cause adverse effects at the comparably lowest dose, whereas much higher doses were needed for effects of the DecaBDEs. The critical effects of PentaBDEs are those on neurobehavioural development (from 0.6 mg/kg body weight) and, at somewhat higher dose, thyroid hormone levels in rats and mice, of OctaBDEs on fetal toxicity/teratogenicity in rats and rabbits (from 2 mg/kg body weight), and of DecaBDEs on thyroid, liver and kidney morphology in adult animals (from 80 mg/kg body weight). Carcinogenicity studies, only performed for DecaBDEs, show some effects at very high levels, and IARC (1990) evaluates DecaBDEs not classifiable as to its carcinogenicity to humans. TBBPA: The toxicity of TBBPA in the experimental in vivo studies is suggested to be low. In most reported studies, only doses in g/kg body weight were effective, but at least one study suggested renal effects at around 250 mg/kg body weight. Although difficult to include and interpret in a quantitative risk assessment, the in vitro effects on immunological and thyroid hormones, as well as binding to erythrocytes should be noted. Before a solid standpoint could be reached on TBBPA toxicity additional studies must be performed. This statement is even more valid regarding the TBBPA derivates, where there is an almost complete lack of toxicity data. HBCD: Also in the case of HBCD, relevant toxicity studies are lacking. Based on the present animal studies, a critical effect is seen in the liver and on thyroid hormones (LOAEL 100 mg/kg body weight/day). However, in a recent short paper behavioural effects in mice pups were observed already at 0.9 mg/kg body weight, and behavioural effects may be a sensitive endpoint for HBCD, as well as for other BFRs. PBBS: Due to the Michigan accident in 1973-1974, many toxicity studies on PBBs are available. The critical experimental effects are those on reproduction and carcinogenicity, and a NOAEL of 0.15 mg/kg body weight/day could be suggested based on the cancer effects. In man no unequivocal effects have been observed, although in some studies neurological and musculoskeletal symptoms were suggested. Based on the carcinogenic effects in animals, a human TDI of 0.15 microg/kg body weight has been presented.To conclude, the toxicity data are almost entirely based on experimental models. There are differences among the BFR groups, as well as within these groups, both regarding type of toxic effect and at what dose it appears. As BFRs will continue to appear both in industrial applications and, even if the production has ceased, in our environment, there is a continued need for effects studies on BFRs. 相似文献

Uranium (U) internal distribution and involved effects in the bivalve Corbicula fluminea have been studied after direct chronic exposure (90 d, 10 μg.L-1). U distribution was assessed at the subcellular level (Metal Rich Granules -MRG-, pellets and cytosol fractions) in two main organs of the bivalve (gills and visceral mass). Micro-localisation was investigated by TEM-EDX analysis in the gills epithelium. DNA damage in gill and hemolymph samples was measured by the Comet assay. The 90-d exposure period led to a significant increase of U concentration in gills over time (×5) and a large U quantity in subcellular granules in gills. Finally, a significant increase (×2) in DNA damage was noted in exposed gills and haemocytes. This study shows that the accumulation levels and consequently the potential toxicity cannot be successfully predicted only on the basis of concentration in water or in tissues and subcellular fractions after chronic exposure. 相似文献

Converting Toxic Equivalents (TEQ) of dioxins and dioxin-like compounds in fish from one Toxic Equivalency Factor (TEF) scheme to another 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Toxic Equivalency Factors (TEFs) are an essential part of the Toxic Equivalent (TEQ) concept and have evolved for dioxins/dioxin-like compounds over the last two and half decades. Therefore, it is difficult to compare past and current TEQs that are reported using different TEFs without explicitly mentioning underlying congener concentrations. Using what likely is the largest known dioxin/furan (PCDD/F) and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyl (dl-PCB or DLP) fish database, here we present regression models that can facilitate conversion of a fish TEQ from an old to a newer TEF scheme. The results show that the mammalian PCDD/F-TEQ based on the latest TEF(WHO-05) is about 7.5% lower than that based on TEF(WHO-98). The mammalian DLP-TEQ(WHO-05) is on average 25-26% lower than almost identical DLP-TEQ(WHO-94) and DLP-TEQ(WHO-98). Total-TEQ(WHO-05) is on average 22% lower than Total-TEQ(WHO-98). According to the current toxicological standards for dioxins/furans, all previous major TEF schemes except TEF(Germany-85) and TEF(USEPA-87) were conservative (i.e., higher) in estimating TEQs. The major (> 75%) contribution to PCDD/F-TEQ(WHO-05) is from 2,3,7,8-TCDD (33%), 1,2,3,7,8-PCDD (26%), 2,3,7,8-TCDF (10%), and 2,3,4,7,8-PCDF (9%). The DLP-TEQ(WHO-05) is dominated by PCB-126 which on average contributes about 88%. The DLP-TEQ generally contribute > 70% of Total-TEQ. When reporting TEQs, we recommend that the underlying congener specific concentrations are presented, TEF scheme used is clearly stated, names of compounds included are explicitly expressed, and TEQs are identified accordingly (e.g., DLP-TEQ, PCDD/F-TEQ, Total-TEQ). 相似文献

In the past decade, the number of organic chemical contaminants identified in oil refinery wastewaters has risen from less than 20 to over 300. This increase in knowledge was made possible by advances in gas chromatography-mass spectrometry instrumentation and new techniques to maximize resolution of capillary chromatography. The types of compounds identified in refinery wastewaters are similar to those identified in crude oils; i.e., aliphatic, aromatic, alkyl aromatic, polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, and some hydrocarbons containing nitrogen, sulfur, and oxygen. The contaminants in oil refinery wastewaters acutely lethal to aquatic organisms can be removed by biological treatment systems. However, biological treatment systems may not be capable of removing all deleterious contaminants. Long-term fathead minnow bioassays of biologically treated refinery wastewaters resulted in 10%–50% mortality after 14–16 days of exposure. The lethal effects were eliminated by sequential treatment with dual media filtration-activated carbon adsorption. 相似文献

The ecotoxicological effects of oil spill from the grounded vessel MV River Princess on the intertidal benthic organisms of Sinquerim-Candolim beach at Goa were investigated. An intertidal expanse of 1 km on either side of the grounded vessel was selected to evaluate the concentration of total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) in the sediment and its effects on the composition, abundance and diversity of micro-, meio- and macrobenthos. TPH in the intertidal sediment ranged from 7.8 to 89 microg g(-1) (mean 35.44+/-26.35 SD). Microbenthos comprised of microalgae, protozoans and juvenile forms of meiobenthos. Apart from juvenile nematodes, which were abundant, Coscinodiscus spp., Navicula spp., and Nitzschia spp. representing microalgae were also observed in microbenthic samples. Meiobenthos was represented by 13 taxa and their total density ranged between 92 and 1057 nos. 10 cm(-2). Maximum meiobenthic abundance of 1057 nos. 10 cm(-2) was observed at Sinquerim. Nematodes were the dominant meiobenthic taxa followed by turbellarians and harpacticoid copepods. The macrobenthos was numerically dominated by polychaetes, followed by crustaceans whereas bivalve molluscs were less represented. There was substantial increase in the petroleum concentration in the beach sediment compared to the previously reported values and highest TPH (89 microg g(-1) sediment) values were in the vicinity of the grounded vessel. The polychaete/amphipod ratio and cumulative and partial dominance abundance-biomass curves showed significant negative impact of TPH on macrofauna. The benthic community structure also showed measurable changes, as there was significant decrease (60%) in the number of species. Given that the microalgal counts were low in sediment, it is assumed that the intertidal meiofauna was possibly using oil-degrading bacteria as alternate food source. In conclusion, the results reported here suggest that the grounded ore carrier is not only detrimental to the beach community, that may take longer time for recovery, but also affects the beach morphology which may have long-term impact on local fishery. 相似文献

Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) is often used for disinfecting hospital wastewater in order to prevent the spread of pathogenic microorganisms, causal agents of nosocomial infectious diseases. Chlorine disinfectants in wastewater react with organic matters, giving rise to organic chlorine compounds such as AOX (halogenated organic compounds adsorbable on activated carbon), which are toxic for aquatic organisms and are persistent environmental contaminants. The aim of this study was to evaluate the toxicity on aquatic organisms of hospital wastewater from services using NaOCl in pre-chlorination. Wastewater samples from the infectious and tropical diseases department of a hospital of a large city in southeast of France were collected. Three samples per day were collected in the connecting well department at 9 a.m., 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. during 8 days from 13 March to 22 March 2001, and a mixture was made at 6 p.m. with the three samples in order to obtain a representative sample for the day. The toxicity test comprised the 24-h EC50 on Daphnia magna and a bioluminescence assay using Vibrio fischeri photobacteria. Fecal coliforms and physicochemical analyses such as total organic carbon (TOC), chloride, AOX, total suspended solids (TSS) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) were carried out. Wastewater samples highlighted considerable acute toxicity on D. magna and V. fischeri photobacteria. However, low most probable numbers (MPN), ranging from <3 to 2400 for 100 ml, were detected for fecal coliforms. Statistical analysis, with a confidence interval of 95%, gave a strong linear regression assessed with r=0.98 between AOX concentrations and EC50 (TU) on daphnia. The identification of an ideal concentration of NaOCl in disinfecting hospital wastewater, i.e. its non-observed effect concentration (NOEC) on algae and D. magna, seems to be a research issue that could facilitate the control of AOX toxicity effects on aquatic organisms. Therefore, it would be necessary to monitor the biocide properties of NaOCl on fecal coliforms at various doses and its toxicity effects on aquatic organisms. 相似文献

The effects of 17beta-estradiol (E(2)) on fish became a matter of concern, since significant levels of this hormone were detected in the aquatic environment released mainly by domestic sewage treatment plants. In this perspective, the current study was focused on E(2) effects upon biotransformation, stress and genotoxic responses of juvenile Dicentrarchus labrax L. (sea bass). Fish were exposed to E(2) during 10 days in two different ways: water diluted (200 ng/L or 2,000 ng/L) and i.p. injected (0.5 mg/kg or 5 mg/kg). A battery of biological responses was evaluated: liver ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) and alanine transaminase (ALT) activities, liver somatic index (LSI), plasma cortisol, glucose and lactate concentrations, as well as erythrocytic nuclear abnormalities (ENA). All the exposure conditions induced endocrine disruption, measured as plasma cortisol decrease, and genotoxicity, measured as ENA increase. Thus, no differences were detected either between different exposure routes or tested concentrations. Concerning liver EROD and ALT activities, as well as plasma glucose and lactate concentrations no differences were found between treated and control groups. LSI was the only parameter to respond differently in the two exposure routes, as only E(2) water diluted induced a significant increase in this hepatic indicator. 相似文献

The levels of the heavy elements cadmium, copper, cobalt, iron, manganese, nickel, lead, and zinc in the major streams and man-made lakes in and around Ibadan City were determined at roughly two monthly intervals between August 1977 and February 1979. They were found to be in the ppb and sub-ppb level except for iron and manganese which were in the ppm range. To assess the quality of these waters with respect to heavy metal contamination, a comparison is made between our results, world averages for both freshwater and seawater, and international water quality standards for drinking water. All elements, except iron manganese, were well within the safety limits. The low level of industrialization in Ibadan has kept its streams and lakes relatively free from heavy metal contamination. 相似文献

中国城市群的兴起催生经济集聚,化石能源消耗增多引发碳排放形势愈加严峻,探索经济集聚对碳排放强度的影响及传导机制至关重要。本文以2004-2016年京津冀、长江三角洲、粤港澳大湾区、成渝城市群的61个城市面板数据为研究样本,探索经济集聚与碳排放强度的关系及影响机制,创新性地使用抗日战争时期各城市是否有铁路通过、2003年各城市是否有机场、各城市历年的国家级经济技术开发区数量作为工具变量解决内生性问题,构建中介效应模型分别检验环境规制和城镇化水平对经济集聚影响碳排放强度的传导机制,并分析经济密度异质性下经济集聚对碳排放强度的不同作用路径。结果表明:①经济集聚与碳排放强度之间呈显著的负向关系,现阶段城市经济集聚水平的提高有利于降低碳排放强度;②相对于低经济密度城市,高经济密度城市经济集聚的降碳效果更为明显;③经济集聚不仅直接对碳排放强度产生影响,还通过环境规制与城镇化水平两条路径间接对碳排放强度产生作用,中介效应显著;④低经济密度城市经济集聚对碳排放强度的间接影响主要是通过城镇化水平来传导,而高经济密度城市经济集聚对碳排放强度的间接影响可以靠环境规制和城镇化水平两条路径来实现。据此本文认为,政府应推动城市群经济以促进区域融合发展,实现企业联动合作以提高经济集聚水平。针对经济密度不同的城市治理手段应有所侧重,高经济密度城市应以增强环境规制力度为主要碳减排手段,而低经济密度城市则应通过提高经济集聚水平,改善城市建设水平并最终达到碳减排的目标。 相似文献

Tourism is well established in the Antarctic. Its impact is at present limited; the number of tourists is small and unlikely to increase much in the near future. Most tourists come by sea. There are two types of cruise: natural history cruises, mostly in small vessels, and more traditional entertainment cruises in larger passenger ships. Small numbers of private expeditions, mostly in yachts, visit the Antarctic. Official guests of the direction or management of research stations may arrive by supply ship or by air. Some tours arrive by plane and stay only a short while. Tourism is unlikely to increase much in the near future because of its high cost, the risk of passenger dissatisfaction on account of bad weather, and the difficult financial situation of some countries. Impacts arising from tourist activities are discussed. At research stations, the impact is on the life and work at the station, but in the field there may be considerable impact on wildlife. The best answer lies in control and interpretation, particularly through tour guides. A possible problem arises with ships' crews, who may not have been as carefully briefed as the passengers. Tourism generates in visitors a lasting interest in the Antarctic, which strengthens public opinion towards conservation. 相似文献
